It was okay. I had ham steak and eggs. The steak was advertised as "Big", but it was pretty thin. One thing I did like was the sourdough toast. Nice and tangy! I like that.

One of the worst diner experiences I've ever had... and from many visits to crappy greasy spoons over the years, that's sayin' somethin'. I didn't know you could screw up diner food so bad but here's how they did it: egg substitute omelets, a chicken breast smothered in dried dill and charbroiled to taste like Sterno. I ordered a side salad but the waitress mistakenly substituted the salad for the fries. When I asked for the fries I explained that I wanted to *add* the salad, not replace the fries. Then she brought me a huge platter of fries and charged me for both the fries and the salad so I basically didn't get either one in the charge for my sandwich that was supposed to include fries. And $6 for a malt? Ridiculous! I won't be back.

Came for breakfast and was once again disappointed. I ordered smoked Gouda grits and the eggs Benedict and a vanilla shake. The grits were horrible - no cheese flavor, molded into what looked like a scoop of ice cream, barely warm and dry. The eggs were poached too hard and there was an excess of ham. Even my shake was more like a cup of ice cream than a shake. I will be hard pressed to try this again.

We had lunch here since we were told it was good. It looks like the 50s style Denny's in our home town. First we had to wait 20 minutes which gave me promise it was good, but this place has no wifi. This was a concern for me since I needed to do some work. We were seated in a strange table that had a booth seat on one side and chairs on the other, and located next to the restroom. The menu has a wide selection of food and decided to get blueberry pancakes. Our food took some time to arrive. My pancakes was not very good and did not go very well with me. I rather gone to Denny's than this place. They also has 80s music playing which was also kind of odd. Going to return to eat only fish in Alaska.

This is the place you would find in most American cities. It is styled as place from the past were Elvis Presley was around and you will hear the music from that period plus you will see a lot of decorations pointing to that era. It is different but not much more. The food is not expensive and not cheap either. It is very average tasting with very average menu too. Sort like Norms or Denny's chains wit the same style presented by waitress asking us repeatedly if we want dessert or a drink and we did not. If you are looking for the place just to eat American food it is Ok to go but we were not exited but liked the music from the sixties.

A nice local diner and regular breakfast place for my co-workers. the portions are big for the price you pay and yummy if you don't think about the calories content. My co-workers had the spinach omelete which I thought was awesome. chicken fried steak was also yum. I had the reindeer sausage and eggs, just enough salt and grease to get me through a work day flying. nice comfort food.

Have only eaten here a handful if times but never never been disappointed. Everything that I've ever had was excellent. Just when you think all pancakes are the same, city dinner nails it with their oh so fluffy and sweet pancakes, perfect!

Fast and friendly with traditional diner fare! We loved it! Gravy was thick, biscuits fresh, and eggs exactly as ordered. They actually do over easy over easy!

I have no idea why this place has such a bad rating. I have been here twice and am looking forward to going back! The service has always been great and same as the food! It is decently priced and has a wonderful atmosphere of the 50's.

The killer chili is pretty killer. My husband loves their 10-80 burger. (i believe that's what it's called.) The waitresses are a hit and miss on attentiveness especially when they get really busy. They get usually really busy during the lunch and dinners so be willing to wait 45mins sometimes. One thing I thought was pretty cool is that when you order a pop, they'll bring over a small pitcher for yourself to refill on your own. Make sense because of the wait on the food and how busy they get.

The only thing I have eaten at City Diner is one thing, (well I don't count a side salad and iced tea.) Their Thai Wings and they are amazing. They are crisp breading, almost tempura, spiced just right and it just works. They we're so good, and I was being treated by client reps I just had to order a separate To Go of these wings to take to my wife's office for her lunch. Wife agrees, they are excellent. She has been telling me you need to learn to make those wings. I have made 1 attempt at those Thai wings at home since, but no comparison. Still looking for the Thai magic to those wings. We endorse those wings !!!

I wish I could say I love City Diner, but I can't. The place seems totally fun--- oldies style decor, cool music, little personal soda pitchers--- but the food is just BLAH. I came here this past Thursday for dinner. I had the mushroom and swiss burger with fries. The fries are the shiz, but the burger was so dry and flavorless. Damn! I had to slather that puppy with mayo, mustard, and ketchup just to get some moisture and flavors in there. My mom had onion rings with her sandwich, but they were served cold and soggy. The other past experiences have also been nothing to write home about. The service is also very slow, and they seem to have a high turnover rate. I'll probably come back just because my Mom digs the place, but it will be against my will. Despite the flavorless food and slow service, my family and I usually have a really fun time eating here.

This is a good place. They have decent diner food (not too greasy) and better than average service. The sliders remind me of white castle, my friend loves the meatloaf.

Came here on Saturday morning and got a table outside. A gust of wind blew our umbrella away into the street and a server had to chase it down. Our server sucked big time. I had to ask for water, and then remind her, and she never came back to refill my coffee. I ordered 2x2x2 which is 2 strips of bacon or sausage, 2 eggs, and 2 pancakes. Our food was cold, so we had enough and walked out. Won't come again. I have come here 3 other times with poor results, so it wasn't a rash decision to leave.

Solid food, especially their breakfast dishes. This place even sells beer and wine. Coffee isn't bad, I don't know what the other person is talking about. Retro decor is cool, and its location is really good. The waitresses are friendly, and the food comes out in no more than 10 minutes' time. Only thing this place is missing is Wifi!

As always I enjoyed the food my server was good (Ricky) though one server and the manager stood in front of the service window running their mouth for 10 minutes while other servers worked.

I went to City Diner with a friend and my 11 month daughter at noon. We were sat fairly quickly. Service was great, but the food was ok . I ordered the Monte Cristo sandwich. It had French toast bread and a jam, which made it too sweet instead of savory. Other items looked and smelled great. I will definitely be back but I will order something different. Cute decor!

Salad was completely full of water at bottom of bowl. Thanks forgot not making me payment for that gem. Fish any chips... Fish was over cooked and fries were undercooked. Wait staff is a little slow and needs to pay attention to customers better.

Excellent Breakfast food, reasonable prices. So far I have not been able to find a better omelet for the price in Anchorage.

An edible, but nothing special breakfast. I didn't expect much more by the looks of the outside-- it's really tacky. I also don't get the other view about the bad coffee. The coffee tastes like restaurant, Folgers variety. Nothing special, but not terrible. If you're an out of towner like me, go to Gwennie's instead. Yes, you'll get the tacky decor-- but a better breakfast overall.

My dad and I went here today for lunch. We've gone in the past and it was ok, but everything about the food is just unappealing now. Fries and sandwich were COLD (seemed like the bacon had been sitting out for a long time). I ordered the BLTA (bacon, lettuce, tomato, avocado) sandwich. Yeah, they forgot the avocado. Seriously, how do you forget one of the ingredients of the title?? LOL The waitress did bring me avocado, but it was brown. Not appealing at all. Ordered a side of ranch for the fries. I don't know what it was, but it wasn't ranch. No flavor. Oh, and it looked like some grease had been dripped on top. Nice. My dad ordered a club sandwich. Again, the fries were cold. And, this isn't what a club sandwich is supposed to be. It's some turkey, bacon, lettuce on bread. No middle slices of bread, etc...Might as well just call it a turkey sandwich. The whole menu is completely unappealing. Nothing else I'd want to order. I don't know if Chef Al sold this place, or what, but it's disgusting and overpriced. Don't waste your time or money.

We had a great, late lunch/early dinner here. We were a party of 6, and the hostess seated us at a comfortable booth/table combo. Two people in our party were not happy; they felt crowded and wanted to push two nearby tables together to make one large table. The hostess was great and took care of this for us immediately. Our server was patient beyond belief. My husband and I had spent the last 2 days catering to and coddling his parents and aunt and uncle. We were both tired and rapidly losing patience, but our server was great - she was willing to explain practically every dish on the VERY extensive menu, and she did so with grace and good humor. We ordered, and when our food arrived, everyone was very happy - well almost everyone. Somehow my father in law thought he had ordered a Cobb Sandwich not a Cobb Salad..... Our server was terrific, our food was great, and just yummy!

Good locally owned diner in Anchorage. Upscale, gastro fare, as well as down & dirty, stick to your ribs grub. Great for breakfast, as well as late night noshes. However, always seems a little chilly temp-wise inside, bsummer and winter, not causing one to want to linger.

Average food, decent service but I come to eat, not for a concert. I prefer no extra noise piped in but don't mind a sound track if it's in the background. City Diner's music is TOO LOUD!

When City Diner opened three years ago, the food was fresh and tasty. I went there often and they provided Anchorage another good dining option. But, the past 2-3 times I've eaten at City Diner, I leave thinking maybe it will get better and back to the yummy, comfortable traditional diner fare it once had. Today, I ordered an open-faced meatloaf sandwich with mashed potatoes. The meatloaf was warmish and even with the hot gravy, it was a little on the stale side, like it had been frozen and then thawed. But, the mashed potatoes were terrible. I've never had sticky mashed potatoes before. They were over-salted and almost cold. They could have presented instant mashed potatoes from freeze-dried potato flakes that were tastier and fluffier. It's just sad that a once pretty great restaurant is no longer. Maybe they'll get it back together. Our server mentioned the kitchen manager who'd been with City Diner since opening left and they've got a new one. Clearly, new isn't better or even the same. I hope City Diner can recover. It's going to be awhile until I think about going back.

Wasn't impressed... Won't go back! I ordered a burger and a cup of corn chowder. Chowder was ok. Nothing to write home about. The burger was HORRIBLE!! Tasteless meat & incredibly dry. I HATE ketchup on anything but potatoes, and this burger was so dry I had to dip my burger in the ketchup. My hubby ordered the club and his bread was so hard & crusty he could barely stomach finishing it (fresh bread is what he does for a living). The only reason this is getting a 2 star instead of 1, is because the service was outstanding. Friendly and attentive. So in short, if you go to a restaurant for good food, skip this place.

This place is close, so we end up here more frequently than I'd like. The food is never anything more than adequate. The service is typically fair to bad- on our most recent trip, a waiter took my empty glass of water, filled it back up, and then gave it to a lady at the table next to ours. Luckily she informed him that she already had water and sent it back.

Very disappointed in the food. First order was a chicken sandwich w/ fries and the chicken was dry, hard and burned on one side. It was like it was recooked. Second order was Chicken Pot pie. The dough topping looked pretty, but you could not cut it even with a knife. It was like tearing with a consistency of a thick wet newspaper, and the taste was about same..... No flavor in the Pot pie filling whatsoever. In all fairness, the chicken curry soup tasted the best with good flavor. Way overpriced for what you get...

I've been here twice and gotten the same thing both times [Diner Dip - what can I say, I'm a sucker for delicious French dip type sandwiches]. The second time I got it some of the meat on it was borderline cold. Not okay. The service was spotty as well. The teenage girl working the front counter looked as though we were inconveniencing her reading schedule simply by arriving. We asked for a booth and despite the many open booths looked at us like we had multiple heads. The decor is adorable, though. I guess I should update this when I order something different.

My family. my boyfriend and myself were looking for a quick place to eat dinner while in Anchorage for vacation. The price here is outrageous but then again, everything is compared to Kansas so I wont hold that against them. I ordered the Biscuits and Gravy with a side of diner brows. Would be amazing if it had some sausage in it. Is that a Kansas thing only?? However, the biscuits were dense and flakey, perfectly easy to eat. The diner browns were crazy good and worth the $4. When you order drinks, you will get a normal cup and the a small pitcher (if you order soda this is what you get at least) I love that idea! Their beer is fairly reasonable... $3.50 for a glass. The waiter was nice and helpful. However, he was high school/college age (my age) and made me very uncomfortable. I hate when waiters or waitresses single out one person and don't ever look away from them when taking orders. This is was our waiter did and it was on me. Overall a nice little place to eat and very quick

This place deserves the poor reviews here on Yelp. It's average at best and nothing more. I do not recommend it. I went to City Diner for the first and hopefully last time today and was not impressed. The interior of the restaurant is okay but nothing more. The windows facing Minnesota and the mountains are huge which is nice although there's not much to look at except for cars passing by. CD does have some super comfy booths which is nice for a change. There were a few things during our visit that were glaringly poor. First, in a city that has so much great coffee, especially Kaladi Bros, these guys use a brand called Steam Dot that tastes awful. Maybe this is designer Sanka or Maxwell House, but I don't get it. You can also buy bags of their coffee at the front counter if you want to torture your taste buds at home as well. Second, as I walked by the kitchen I noticed their bags of Wonder Bread. Really? If you're giving me Wonder Bread then I want to pay the appropriate prices for my meal. Yes, I understand that the Wonder Bread factory is close by but two slices of Wonder Bread toast for $1.95 is a rip off. Third, they cook tons of bacon early and then leave it under heat lamps on the counter all day. Yum! And lastly, their Diner potatoes have more pieces of dried up hardened potato skins in this concoction (a few potato pieces, green onion, grilled onion & tons of over cooked pieces of potato skin) than they do of actual potato pieces. The few pieces of actual potato that I did receive were far from good and a big disappointment. The service was adequate, the eggs were done fairly well and the french toast was average. I hope I never have to go here again. Snow City is way better than this place.

I've always liked the food here: good American dishes with a twist. We typically went for a great breakfast on weekends or a dinner salad or bowl of chili during the week. For a long time I avoided eating here though because the service was just sooooo slow. No matter how busy or slow they were, we needed a minimum of an hour to be seated, order, be served, and pay the check. Then two weeks ago we went in for a early dinner (a BLT and a burger) and were in and out in about 30 minutes. Not bad! As an added bonus, we discovered that their burgers are awesome!

Having been to City Diner about a dozen times since its opening, I have experienced just a few meals that were in the 3 star range but most were in the 2 star range. It's a shame because the location is great and Anchorage is in desperate need of a great comfort-food diner. Overall however, the Diner falls short... Service is spotty at best. A few times, I've noticed employees openly arguing in front of patrons (a definite no-no). Accuracy of to-go orders are spotty as well. A few food items are good but most do not match the price. Recommendations: The Carnegie Reuben Diner Dip O'rings Puddle Disappoinments: - Fish & Chips - $6 milkshake (Lucky Wishbone shake is better and cheaper) - Monte Cristo - No Bone Fried Chicken - Pies - worst item - very poor, tastes like a cheap store bought pie but for $5 a slice. - Burgers - the 1/2 pound of meat is overkill and served dry. 2nd worst menu item. - Chili cheese fries

This once great haven of comfort food has become a hall of complacency. Dinner tonight included a salad at room temperature, chili that wasn't warm enough to melt the shredded cheese on top - even after the cheese was stirred in - and veggies that were limp and cold on top of the bowl and barely warm on bottom. My hot beverage came in a dirty cup. The service was excellent which is usually the case unless you go during the lunch rush or weekend breakfast hours. Then prepare to wait a long time for your meal. When they're not slammed, the wait staff is knowledgeable and helpful and on-the-spot when asked for anything. Tonight our server checked on us several times and kept our drinks full throughout the meal. One of the staff, possibly the manager, was very warm and engaging. She visited with us on the way in and once we were done. Too bad the front of the house has to work so hard to cover for the laziness that seems evident in the kitchen.

Nicest staff. they got beer (hence the 2 stars) but C'mon!! Those cooks look like they are working the mess hall in a jail or basic training - i.e you'll eat whatever crap they are slinging and like it. The grilled chicken they served my son was a hockey puck dredged in a spice rub. We sat right in front of the pass so I could tell the line cooks could not give a shit about what they threw up there. The grits are a crime, the gravity of which I am unable to share effectively...

Went for lunch yesterday. They weren't seating people promptly. I was ignored for quite a while after seated. When the waitress finally came, she acted like she was doing me a favor to take my order. She didn't even know what the special was for the day. After I ordered it took over half an hour to get a burger. When I got it, the bun was cold. The waitress didn't even come back to the table to check on me, til she dropped off the bill. Don't think I'll go back again.

The decor is cool: it looks like a silver 50's diner. But the food is mediocre and expensive, service isn't great, and it's almost impossible to find anything healthy on the menu. Everything tastes like it was once frozen, or came from a can. Their salads are depressing. On the other hand, this is probably what diners actually served back in the 1950's. (At much, much lower prices.)

Awesome food, Great staff!!! Try the Rainster it is awesome. It's eggs benny on french toast with crispy diner potatoes Mmm Heaven!! Monte Cristo is great. Haven't ever had a burger here but the bf has and it's on point most of the time.

Saying the prefab food they serve here is average is giving this place the benefit of the doubt. The owners are some well known and respected "big name" chefs (for Anchorage anyway) and I am a regular at their other establishments... but I doubt they do any of the cooking or planning for this place. It's kind of like the popular authors who put out books with their names displayed prominently on the cover in large type with the actual writer's name in small letters discreetly placed at the bottom of the page. It's a little better than McD's...but not by much. I've given them a 2nd and 3rd chance to convince me otherwise but doubt I'll be back anytime soon.

I've been here only once, where I ate half of my cold, tasteless meal, and then proceeded to deposit it in the Porcelain Throne later that night. That's all that needs to be said about this place..

I've heard some complaints about City Diner, including from my mom who says it was their food that made her sick, but so far I like it and haven't had any problems. I got the fried chicken sandwich today and it was really good. Another time I had the boneless fried chicken (what can I say, I am a fan of boneless fried chicken dishes) with gravy and I liked that, too. I think their soft drink policy is a little exploitative but that's okay. I love the decor - although it's not /really/ true to diner decor - and the desserts are fun, too. I'm also a big sucker for diners in general. I suppose the only thing that keeps me from giving this place five stars is that the food doesn't make me go wow. And sometimes it's cold in there!

A recent visit to City Dinner. Hostess kinda stared at me blankly for a few minutes before even asking me if I needed a seat... Yes I was waiting for the rest of my party to show up but it would be great to feel welcome. City dinner looks good, nice decor, but I have noticed a definite lack of zing that they used to have. I dislike the way the menu is laid out with the city lingo. Radio? City Juice? Do I care?.. naw.. I prefer simpler menus. I wasn't super hungry, I just wanted some sliders, and they wanted a veggie burger. Soo.. a short while later we get some food. :) My sliders were kinda blah, the burger was underseasoned, and tasted more like sweet onions than beef. Additionally the waiter or kitchen made the mistake of serving a regular burger instead of a veggie burger.. I always feel sorry for the person that gets the mistake, as I gnaw my sliders with a serving of guilt as they wait for a redo. I have had great food before at City.. The pot roast was memorable, but I did not have it this visit. This time was kinda ok.. nothing really say that city was all that.

Hmmm... well this is my first review so the place was a nice food was not what I expected my mini burgers were raw not cooked and my little girls fish and chips were raw as well. My wife had the chicken and tht was overly seasoned with parsley.. I mean come on guys I read somewhere there was a rated chief tht wrks here guess he off that night.. my over all experience was not good and will not try it again.. One guy said it was a tiny step up from McDonald's and I think he was right a over priced McDonald's

Thick and rich comfort food wrapped in kitschy 50s decor. Service is slow, sandwiches are big. Some things were average, some were good and one was fucking stellar: Blue cheese chips! Freshly fried, dark and crunchy potato chips, topped with a generous portion of warm blue cheese sauce, with scallions and crumbled bacon on top. There are few better decadences to be found. I'd go back just for them.

Brought the kids here for the first time on the way to a show at Sullivan Arena. I knew reviews on Yelp were mixed and mainly bad but a friend recommended the burgers and sandwiches, so I went with an open mind. This is what I noticed: Retro decor was cool but the black and white tile/linoleum floor was filthy. I had real tile like that (the honeycomb type) in my old Detroit turn of the century apartment and I could have told them it's impossible to clean. Yuk. Trade it out for carpet. Watching the waitresses sweep up the crap on the floor wasn't a good experience either. The bathrooms were dirty too - paper towel all over the place, overflowing from the garbage bin. In contrast to the retro-Diner theme were the waiters and waitresses. They were dressed like chefs - chefs from Simon and Seaforts. So they are all upscale and they talk to you like you are ordering from Simon's (reserved and not overly friendly) but it's DINER food. Totally inconsistent. They need to have them be like Flo on Mel's Diner. Or at least stop them from acting all upscale and let them dress like a "normal" server. The Ruben sandwich I ordered was the best I have ever had. It was made the way I would make it. Lots of corned beef, the right amount of cheese and sauerkraut and grilled perfectly. I think by reading the reviews, everyone that goes there loves the Rubens. The onion rings were the standard, frozen breaded kind. That was sad. The kids ordered burgers that were too big for them to finish but there were no complaints. Everyone liked their fries. The youngest got a deep fried chicken breast that was sliced into fingers and he loved that. What he really loved was the small pitcher of diet Pepsi that came with his drink. He loved being able to pour it himself (parental intervention required unless you want your kid to drink about 36 ounces of pop). The rest of us ordered chocolate malts and they were wonderful. Lots of malt flavor. All in all too much to eat. Decent value, can't complain about the actual service. It just seems to me the owners need to clean up the floor and make things "internally consistent" with their theme.

Several friends have gotten food poisoning here. I am disappointed because they seem to use consistently low-quality ingredients. I wish they incorporated more fresh foods. I ordered a spinach and mushroom omelet--the spinach was clearly frozen, and the mushrooms were canned. Very disappointing. On the plus side, the ambiance is fun and the location is good.

The hostess was great, the server friendly, but let me tell you, STAY AWAY from the monte cristo, ick...that was a pathetic excuse for a sandwich. I understand that Americans are all health conscious and what not now, but jeez lousie, seriously. A monte cristo is a battered and deep fried sandwich, if I wanted healthy, I'd have ordered a salad. If they're concerned about people's health then they shouldn't serve french fries! Anyway, yuck, my first and only experience, but I will consider trying it again just because all of the workers were so nice. My boyfriend had a burger, he didn't complain, but he rarely complains, seriously, he's with me after-all, he must be easy to please, hah.

I was looking for a place to have lunch and decided to try City Diner. Sat at the counter; the service was prompt and friendly, and the grilled cheese sandwich and fries were more than enough. A pleasant stop on my first afternoon in Anchorage, 3/3/2011. Would stop in again.

Pretty good food for a diner. Wasn't the typical diner menu I expected. Good milkshakes. Clean restaurant, nice waitress. You get a lot of food, but the prices are a bit high for a diner.

I'm from the East and was very excited to have a real diner in Anchorage. The service can be very good to very bad- I never know what it will be like. I get the feeling that there is a lot of turnover with the staff; I don't feel I ever recognize anybody. Most of the time I get the Liver-n-Onions. It gripes me I have to tell them *no bacon*. In the East calves' liver is with onions and chicken livers are served with bacon- period. This place messes things up trying to reinvent what they think East food is like. Oh, and the coffee is horrid. they have nice beers, though, so I get a brew with my liver. Hey, sometimes a new tradition is good :).

The first time I came here was to satisfy my craving for a Monte Cristo. I was a repeat Monte Cristo customer until I finally branched out to try the "Flat Foot" aka fried bologna sandwich... YUM!

Tons of food for a great price! Wait staff was very friendly, great local coffee and reindeer sausage. Fluffy eggs, and great 50's atmosphere! The only downfall, if you want to call it that, is that the plates are almost too big! I took home some dinner too...

I really want to like this place after all the hype I have heard about it. But, I have been there for breakfast and lunch and neither have lived up to taste expectations. It's cheap, but not good cheap.

It's a diner, all right. They have the burgers, sandwiches, and Alaska seafood you expect alongside a few "classics" like liver and onions and a hot bologna sandwich. Sometimes they don't seem to use enough salt (at a restaurant? weird), but texture and presentation are solid. Although the menu does use a decent amount of weird retro slang, it's been toned down a bit since the place first opened. Breakfast is similarly comforting. The corned-beef hash is excellent, and if you ask your stomach nicely you might be able to convince it to let you order the "rainster", the terrifying synthesis of eggs benedict and French toast. Don't come here for "the classics reinvented", just come here for the classics done well. And the chrome, don't forget about the chrome.

Good comfort food at decent prices, especially for Anchorage. One of the better diners I've been with pretty fresh ingredients. Much better than IHOP or Denny's. Serve was a tad on the slow side, but not enough for me to really notice. I've eaten here twice so far, and quality was consistent. We'll probably go back before we leave Anchorage for the lower 48 in a few months.

Comfort food at it's best. This recently built 50's throw back style diner is just the thing if you are in need of some old fashioned comfort food. They have delicious burgers, shakes, meatloaf, onion rings, deli style sandwiches and did I mention malted shakes? Yummy. My work buddies and I eat here about once a month for lunch and they have never disappointed us.

If I could, I wouldn't have even given it a star! I went for breakfast on a Saturday and had the worst server and the worst breakfast. The server took forever to get to us, never checked back with us after she had given our food, and even screwed up our bill by charging us a kids meal when there was no kids meal. She herself stated, "Boy, you two had pretty bad service." The FOOD: I ordered the Rainster since I am a big fan of Eggs Benedict type meals. I was iffy about it being over french toast so I had it on the side...The french toast was the worst! It was dry, not flavorful, no matter how much syrup I poured over it, it still tasted bad. The hollandaise sauce was very runny, no flavor. I don't know what the hype of this diner. GROSS. My company had chicken friend steak. Mediocre.

I've eaten at the City Diner twice and was satisfied both times. Most recently, I had a very standard breakfast: eggs, potatoes, bacon, coffee. The portions were huge and my eggs were done just as I had requested: over medium. My dining partner had a Monte Cristo and a malted. Both were very good. We agree that we would eat there again.

I used to like this diner, they had a real home-cooked comfort food thing going on. Then I guess they got new management and tried to change things up.. And the food suffered. For example the grits used to be great then they changed the portion size and added a bunch of weird seasoning. Some things are better left simple! The other thing was that maybe it was a bad night for them? But the waiter asked us our order no less than 3 times and our food took a really long time. This was when there was only my table and about two others eating at the time.

City Diner is a solid 3 star place. The decor is nice, retro, clean. Very good. The menu is cute and fun. The food is good. One time my husband ordered the Route 66, comes with onion rings on the burger. His burger came out without onion rings. When he told the waitress she said back "we're out of onion rings". If he had know that he would have ordered something else. To make it up to him she brought hima peice of pineapple upsidedown cake. That was nice of her, but she should have told them they were out of onion rings. Another time I found a piece of plastic wrapper in my eggs benny. Maybe part of the ham wrapper, I don't know. But I just expect a little more from this place. The last time we went we used our Groupon. The waiter was very nice about it. Served us very well and had a good meal. I will go back. And yes they have outdoor seating, but it's right next to a very busy road. I wouldn't want to sit there.

Anya restaurant whose kitchen cannot keep up with the amount of customers it seats shouldn't be in business. At breakfast today we waited almost 1 hour for eggs and bacon. Which we very ordinary. It was overpriced and bland. I would never return.

If it was left up to me, I probably would never have chosen this place to have lunch.. but since it was a free meal, I went. We were seated by noon and I swore we waited for at least 20 minutes to get the waitress' attention to place our lunch orders. The food took some painstakingly long time to get to us... I was starving by the time the food arrived and chugged down corn chowder and the halibut fisn n chips. When I was done, I felt like a giant grease ball and really sick. By the time we paid, it was two hours later.... I would never go back there again even if it's free!!!

Great local restaurant. Hand made milkshake was great. My French Dip sandwich as super. The Corn Chowder was some of the best I have had! The service was attentive and timely.

the menu is packed with the kind of food that'll put you to sleep... food coma status... i had the carnegie(pastrami and swiss on rye) and the chopped steak with mushroom and peppers sandwich... both served with their homemade corn chowder, which by the way is pretty fuckin good... something great about this place: when you order a drink they give your own personal pitcher of it... aint that some shit? i love it... why'd they only get four stars as opposed to five? cuz it took em a while to take our order... otherwise... their shit is top notch...

They have breakfast and brunch menus- right into lunch and dinner. Service is always quick and pleasant. Only 1x in fully a dozen times here have I been close to what I would consider dis satisfied . But as a rule the food is great, wait staff is excellent and atmosphere keeps me coming back

Every city has *that* diner that's like a security blanket you can fall back on when being indecisive on where you want to eat. For me, this is that diner. Everything is comfortable. It's not too loud, it's not too expensive, it's not too anything. Just a solid place to hang out and eat good food. The menu reads like a standard diner menu, but the food is a step up from the standard diner offerings. The service I've gotten has always been friendly and patient as we sift through the menu (remember, we come here when we're being indecisive. I don't know why, it just happens that way) and of course the milkshakes make me very happy. If I had one wish, it might be that City Diner was open 24 hours a day. Not totally committed on the use of my one wish, but I would absolutely consider it.

I love the 50's era and so when we went past this place I totally spazzed and we had dinner there. I didn't expect any of the stuff we experienced though. I thought it was going to be a normal walk-in, sit-where-you-want place full and noisy. In truth it's a fancy restaurant where they seat you and you get to enjoy your meal with great ambience. The music is great, I love the oldies, and their food is epic! Kind of pricey but worth it since it seems you can be full for a whole week after your meal. The food is delicious. City Diner is worth a visit!

Tried this place for breakfast. Our server was Cindy, and she was super nice and made things right at our table. I ordered a short stack of pancakes but added chocolate chips and bananas to it. The cakes were delicious. My partner got the 2x2x2 and he said it was good. He liked the French toast so much, he requested a short stack to go with it. Both of our meals came out hot, fresh, and delicious. I will definitely be coming back to this place. I would like to try them for lunch.m one day. Next time.

Updating my review. After what happened last time I decided I will give it another try. I had the grilled chicken sandwich and it was really good! The wait for my grilled chicken wasn't too long or too short. It gave me time to look over the place. I noticed the staff was friendly and focused. Food came out at a good pace and the staff was hustling. Couple of small things did bother me but did not sway me from eating my grilled chicken. As mentioned the wait wasn't to bad after ordering but once food was delivered it was hard to get my server over to refill my drink and get my check. Not really too big a deal but I had to get back to work. While I wasn't overly impressed I did like my food. I'll be coming back for sure!

The food was actually OK- would have maybe been 3 stars buuuuut.... Fries were faux Mc D type fries (deliciously bad) the salad was not terrible, the Reuben was not the best; the sauerkraut was tasteless and there was not nearly thick enough slabs of corned beef. The chili was OK- def get the onions on the side, they were raw and totally overpowered the watery chili. THE SERVICE WAS TERRIBLE. Our waitress who will not be named, was so unhappy and inconvenienced by patrons she had to wait on, I even apologized for asking a question! I will never come back because of the service. Also, please note that 2.00 milkshake Fridays are only for the "small" milkshakes (12oz) not the regular. This detail is not specified freely. I will revisit if someone asks to go to Village Inn (I will then suggest here) but not on my own volition.

We each had a great dinner tonight. She had the cheese steak sandwich I had the Ruben sandwich. Service was polite and kept checking back to make sure we were good. This is our second time eating here while vacationing here in Alaska. Glad we found that his place. We also enjoyed the meatloaf and pot roast dinner two weeks ago. Prices are reasonable for the meals. Try this place if you can.

Went here for breakfast. It has a classy 50's diner theme with 50's music to boot. Funny thing is though the menu items don't totally look like 50's diner options and the menu itself is printed in a black hard bound book that seems to go beyond what you'd expect at a 50's diner. Also, I had Eggs Benedict Florentine; probably not a top item for a 50's diner. Someone obviously decided that they would go with a higher-end theme to class the place up, but I think that might confuse some folks that want a traditional diner experience. I think the diner exterior and interior as-is was great. I would have been happy with a simple plastic or paper diner menu with basic items. The prices were a little higher than I would expect, so maybe the fancier items were helping to justify the higher prices. In any case, the service and waiter were great. My Eggs Benedict was really, really good and done perfectly. However, the grits I ordered (yes, I'm one of the few that likes grits and knows what they should look and taste like) came out dry, lumpy, and cold. I told the waiter and he immediately gave me a big plate of potatoes instead. I loved the way he handled that. Turned a negative to a plus.

There were only a few people there at 6PM, should have been a sign. The service was bad, Shannon was her name. My burger came with a bowl of soup on the same plate, she spilled the soup on the burger while setting it down on the table. Soggy burger. She forgot our appetizer, insisted we get it anyway, brought it after we returned the meal. The jalapino fritters were good, must have been prepped off site. The fries tasted like an open container from the freezer. The meat was tough in the burger like a microwave was used. We ate a few bites of each of two meals and returned both, Shannon the waitress asked if there was a problem and we told her there was. She smiled, took our plates and brought the bill, for the full meal. We will never go back, i called and complained to the manager who suggested we come back and give them a second chance. I think not. Save your money, it was Dennys food at Simons prices.

We came here for an early breakfast before ice fishing one day and our waitress was really grumpy and made it seem as if we were an inconvenience to her... Maybe it's their thing, but the mediocre food does not allow for that attitude. My husband got the Denver scramble and I got the huevos rancheros... There are much better places in anchorage for breakfast, lunch or dinner than this place. Trust me, it's not a fun environment, just attitude, low quality food and a long wait time to get your food.

We were sat down right away, they were out of items on the menu. Service was friendly and she apologized a lot. She should have written down the orders then she wouldn't of had to apologize so much. Food was okay. I'll try again in a few months.

Welll, they do offer a 10% senior discount... But if the food is meh, not an enticement. Had the advertised as medium liver and onion, basic diner food... What could go wrong? Liver dry and mealy, bacon not sauteed with the onion, just dropped on top, mashed potato soupy ..... And sour??? Inedible. The gravy, a bisto style sauce from a packet. The good? Steamed kale and dinner roll. Id eaten breakfast here before with similar execution, just not good.

The food was ok for my whole party except me. I had the pot roast and it had large chunks of fat in it. The rest of the food was middle of the road and the servers were fairly nice but slow.

I have been here a few times since they opened. I've always enjoyed the ambience here. Such a big upgrade over any of the past businesses that have occupied this property. The food is good and service is normally good. I would recommend giving the City Diner a visit if you have not been here yet

Whenever a friend and I want to go to lunch and we're having a difficult time deciding on a restaurant one of us usually will say, "How about City Diner?" We always respond enthusiastically and off we go. My favorite are the Rosie's Sliders - 6 mini cheeseburgers that hit the spot a few times over. The breakfast sliders are also delicious. On my last visit I had the Monte Cristo Sandwich and enjoyed it very much. The service is always excellent and the atmosphere is pleasant. High recommended!

I came here one Saturday morning with my brother for breakfast. Unlike many other breakfast places around town, City Diner wasn't crowded and we were seated immediately. They have great milkshakes here, which my brother ordered for breakfast (we laugh in the face of conventional breakfast beverages). We both ordered the breakfast combo with eggs, bacon and french toast. For $8 you really can't beat it. The food was good, the service was solid and the price was right.

Must love older rock and roll as that is what they play here. I gave it 5 stars because they are what they are trying to be. This is not a fancy place you would have a dinner when you are trying to impress someone. This is a classic dinner that has great food at a great price and I just love the atmosphere. How many places do you know that has paper on the tables and cloth napkins? Everyone who works here is great and they SMILE when they look at you. Okay, maybe I smiled first but that is because this is a fun place with the old music, the paper on the tables, coins in the floor etc... Okay, the food... I had a burger. I know not a big deal and how hard is it to make a good burger anyway? Very hard because I've had some pretty sucky burgers in my life. I can't stand McDonalds burgers! They are an insult!! This place does it right. 1/2 pound burger with lots of FRESH onions, lettuce, and tomatoes. I also got a pitcher of pop and cole slaw with pineapple in it! How cool is that?? I even had a small dish of ice cream with a couple scoops and my bill just broke $15. Thats a deal even in the lower 48 so yes this is as good as it gets! Bring your best girlfriend here. I'm sure you will be rewarded latter.

It pains me to give this few stars. This place used to be one of my favorites in Anchorage. It had a fun atmosphere and the food was always good, reliable diner food. That sure seems to have changed while I was out of town. It looks like they've tried to 'fancy' the place up with cloth napkins (terrible for when you spill your milkshake, by the way) and a new menu, which was both ineffective and really kills the charm of this place that's supposed to be a casual, 50's theme diner. We were disappointed to see some of our favorites removed from the menu, such as the onion rings (too low-brow for their new image, I suppose), but more disheartening was the removal of the option of a veggie patty for your burger. This joint used to be one of the best in town for a vegetarian burger. Now it looks like Red Robin is the answer. I had the Ten 80, which I had often enjoyed in the past, and was left very underwhelmed. Cold, over-salted fries, and the beef patty was over cooked and of low quality. Luckily, the service was quick and effective, but it won't be enough to bring me back here again.

The food and service were so poor that I won't be back. In fact all four of the people I was with thought the food was bad enough to never go back. The service was abysmal. It didn't feel clean. Had so much potential to be fun and cool place.

Meh. I used to go here pretty often, haven't been impressed with the new menu at all. Stopped in for a burger and got sat in the pit. Our waiter took forever, took our order and left all the menus on the table. When my burger came it was cold and the patty was raw, bun was soggy. Totally lost my appetite. Really bummed about the open faced roast beef sandwich and onion rings being removed from the menu.

Well, first thing while walking in- the entry smells like wet dog! Nice atmosphere and decor. Cheerful, attentive staff. Little wait time for food. Pretty chilly temperature inside, wish it was a little warmer. Comfy booths. The place was clean. Loved the menu, it was making me drool. Good variety and fair prices. As an appetizer, we got the green chili artichoke fondue- the bread was good, but the fondue was iffy. In my opinion, it had a banana flavor, and there was a ton of oil! I sent it back. I ordered The Rooster sandwich (chicken salad with lettuce and tomato). The bread was fantastic, sandwich overall was decent, but I wouldn't order it again. The chicken salad needed more apple and it didn't have nuts :( very happy with the fresh produce on it and in my salad. Hubby had the open face chili burger with fries. Yummy fries, decent patty, but the chili was super blan and boring (despite being referred to as famous granny K's chili or whatever). He said it was "alright" but nothing special. I agree with the reviews. Could be great if the food was more flavorful and they made some minor changes.

We visited there for the first time. Service was fast at first then I could see what believed to be my food in the window for at least 15 minutes waiting on the rest of the items to be ready. Well it was my food and it was cold! Everything else was hot except my food. There was plastic in my daughters Mac and cheese so I decided to say something to my server who expressed to the kitchen very loudly that our fries were cold. After we got fresh fries she asked if they were better which they were then she dropped our check off she seemed upset with me. I felt uncomfortable after all this. I've worked in the restaurant business for over the past 8 years and the whole visit was so unprofessional and unpleasant. I would've dealt with everything in a whole different manner.

Everything was amazing! I had the chicken pot pie and truffle fries for an appetizer. Fresh real ingredients and whole white and dark chunks of chicken! Service was fantastic and we were in and out in less than an hour!!!! I will be back! :)

This is a hidden gem in Spenard /West Anchorage. Had a late lunch, seating was prompt and very professional. I had a turkey sandwich on fresh baked bread and on a scale of 1 to 10 that was a 9.9. The tastes was fresh and flavorful and ranks as one the best turkey sandwiches I've had. Homemade soup and a fresh salad topped off my delicious meal. I'm going to be eating at the City Diner more often, for sure. Best of all my meal even with extra salad was very affordable. City Diner one of the best kept secrets in West Anchorage.

I had to write another review for this place. I went back here to have dinner before taking off for my flight to Denver. Server was quick getting me refills was no problem. Wasn't much on the menu I find good. Thought I'd give the liver dish a try. Now I have ate liver dishes at different resurtants before but by far, mine was under cooked! Kindly asked to take it back and re-cook it but my server told me they can't do that. Then someone came, not sure if it was the manager or something but they didn't offer to re-cook or make me a new one. They just asked me to order something else. Honestly, I had not time for this nonsense. I had to hurry up for my flight. I got it taken off the check. Soda tasted flat to me as well. I'm not coming here again. Just bad service and bad food. Would of been nice if I got to talk to the chef and tell them how I would like it to be. Severing my liver with too much pink in it is gross!

Okay, updating food to 4-star after a second meal at CD with visiting relatives. Tried the BLTA (bread very good), corn chowder, buffalo wings, Caesar salad and Kobe burger. Everything we had was tasty, the pot roast was especially delicious. Wish it was served with real pot roast gravy instead of the overly-rich demi glacé, but the whole dish was well-seasoned . Mashed potatoes were good and the kale was so fresh & perfectly cooked. Service was solid. Nice job.

For a diner, this place has really good food. I give it a three not because it's bad, but because the food is by no means exceptional. It's good old-fashioned comfort food, for the most part, though, which is why I thoroughly enjoyed it. If you're in the mood for comfort food, yummy shakes, and classic rock, come here.

This place is always here. Open all the time, Summer and Winter. It is a cool place that reminds me of a scene from an Alaska set movie. A few people I know have been down here and have really spoken highly of it. So I wanted to try it. I always seem to go to the same places all the time when I am here. First off ,it is such a cool building. Next the service is good. They are very nice. It had a really comfy feeling inside. Since it was raining and a comfortable chill out there,it felt nice and cozy inside. Tuna Melt, yes that was on the menu. I have not had one in a million years or maybe less. It was really good. Just very simple but very good. The bread was divine. I am not a fan of bread but, this was good. I wanted the Thai wings. The table next to me got that and I just might try that next time. They say the shakes here are great but, I did not get one. Just coffee which was nice and strong. Loved it! Parking is right there on the premise but, we walked down. Always a good thing to walk around town, when it is nice and cool out.

Used to love this place but after going there last week and experiencing the changes, I have to ask why? It's a diner and it used to remind me of the east coast now I have no clue why they made the changes and why they call themselves a diner. Pretty disappointed in changes.

It's been a bit so thought we'd give it a try again. Friendly and quick service....but...the food was awful! My husband ordered a chili burger and I ordered beer batter halibut. After a very long wait our order arrived. Hubby's fries were stone cold so he immediately told the waiter who brought new fries. While waiting for the fries, he discovered the burger was also cold....the waiter did get him another but it took a while. My halibut was edible, but just. The batter was soggy with oil and the halibut was soft and mushy. At least it was hot. That's more than I can say for the diner. We both kept our jackets on as it was very chilly. Used to enjoy this place, but it's not so great anymore. And what's with the weird butcher paper tablecloth?!

  • Tracy L.

I was VERY disappointed. This place used to be good and fun. A DINER! Now they have fancied everything like if you were going to a "cheap" bistro without the cheap. If you want to be a bistro be one... Other then that go back to being a diner. We ended up walking out. The only reason I gave it a star is because I had too. The waitress was super sweet though.

My favorite place to eat in Anchorage. Great coke product displays and a real diner experience. The elderly waitress did say the gravy was from frozen not home made. so I didn't eat it. Hope it was not so. My early review may not have been fair so I will eat there again. I would not serve your mother frozen gravy. Don't serve it to mine. Good help is not cheap and cheap help is not good.

Ok. They started slacking. Badly. The last three or four times we went here (I was trying VERY hard to give them ample chance to get me back), the Rueben was TERRIBLE. Hardly any meat, drippy and just bleh. The great sandwiches my husband frequented kept getting demoted to crummy half-portion sandwiches, too. Less cheese, less meat, cheaper meat... I don't recommend this place, and it breaks my heart to lose such an awesome Rueben option.

Saved money with the groupon but still felt ripped off! I love the 50's theme and idea behind this place, and was really excited to fall in love with the experience. Sodas with tiny pitchers were brought to our table very quickly. Our chocolate and strawberry milkshakes came out in five minutes, tasted decent, and the waitress made sure we had enough bowls to share if we wanted. Rosie's sliders were bland and tasted like a form of repackaged McDonalds, very disappointed. This particular Sunday the restaurant was near empty but we were still made to feel rushed by a random employee (repeat: was not our waitress) as she took the liberty of clearing our table while we were still at it. Left the tip on a tray and tried to get up when our waitress, otherwise very lovely, asks, with pen out (and pointed towards my hand for convenient access), "Oh, is this your first time here? Yeah we like when you fill these out." as she set the blank comment card from the departing tray back down onto the table. She was sure to hover a few more seconds to see that I had started writing something. Not likely to go back to explore more of the menu.

First of all I waited 15 minutes for the manager to put us on a list to be seated. once seated trying to keep an open mind I asked for an orange juice and the eggs benedict I waited 30 minutes for my orange juice and 40 minutes for my eggs benedict which the holindaise sause was broken very disappointed sent my food back and I will never come here again

I ordered breakfast, then 5 min later a party of 6 sat down next to me. Took forever to get the waitress to take our order. The other party's food came out long before mine did, even though I only ordered eggs, toast and bacon. Waitress was nice but old and a little oblivious. When the food finally did arrive, there was a long hair in the food and the bacon was really badly cooked (it was 1 piece of bacon and one partial strip, not 2 full strips). The waitress replaced the meal, then the manager came and said it would be free. If I wasn't starving and pregnant, I would have left. Won't be back! With all the reviews about hair in the food, could they use hair nets??

    (2)
  • Tamara D.

Not impressed. The food was expensive and mediocre. What really grossed me out though was the girl scooping ice cream with no hair net. Her hair was so long (and stringy/greasy) it kept on getting in her eyes and the ice cream. DO NOT GET ICE CREAM. I did not take another bite or sip of soda after I saw a guy cough into his hand and then restock the straws and pat the tops of all of them down into the straw holder. DO NOT DRINK THE SODAS. Never going back.

Very disappointed, clearly something went wrong with the makeover. I'm not sure if the place changed management or owners, but something is off. This is not the same menu or the same quality of food. I had the shepherds pie, and it was horrible. The presentation, taste, everything...potatoes were cubed and under cooked, not at all what I envisioned. The interior is starting to show its wear, the booth seat backs moved from the person sitting on the other side...seat cushions are now sagging when you sit in them...corners, edges, nooks and crannies are all dirty. Staff seemed cheerless, just not good. I'd also recommend they try to stagger customers seating locations as they sit people, it just feels weird to be crowded right behind or in front of someone in the line of booths, when there are lots of open tables.

Service & atmosphere always great. New menu, not so much. Would like to see the old all day breakfast menu come back.

This isn't a greasy spoon. The mussels were excellent and service top notch. Limited menu options by all quality here.
