I've had better Mexican food, but I've also had worse. The real winner at Rio is the price. Nothing more affordable in Charleston that will fill you up so much at the same time. Also, they make their margaritas with grain alcohol (meaning they are strong enough to tranquilize a horse. Beware) I didn't see anyone else mention it, so I will: they have really good deserts here! Flan, icecream chimicangas

This place is across the street from the mall down a walkway, so you won't be able to see it from the street. This was my first time here & I wasn't expecting much. I ordered the shrimp tacos just because I've never had bad shrimp tacos & I wanted to give this place an easy lay in for their first impression. They missed. Not an airball, but it doesn't look like they've played basketball before & they own the court. I digress in my metaphor Started with chips and bland salsa (like red dye + water). Then the entre came out quick. Too quick. Like right after my beer. The shrimp & rice weren't seasoned, just...heated? There were grilled bell peppers, onions, & tomatoes spread amongst the 3 shrimp tacos, but they didn't do anything for my tongue. I was impressed with their ability to take any flavor out of any ingredient they used, I don't know how they did it. The highlight of the meal was my dos equis. Total: $15+. Next time I'll just make the trip out to South Charleston if I want Mexican. Or Qdoba, it's across the street & even that tastes more authentic than this place. +1 star for the nice-ish staff

The food is good and they are usually quick which is nice for the 30 minutes I get for lunch. I just really hate the prices; everything is very expensive. Like I said, the food is good but not at those prices. The paintings on the walls are pretty weird but I'm not Mexican so maybe they make sense. All of the servers are courteous and friendly. If you don't mind paying high prices for decent but not great Mexican food then give them a try.

Welcome to the West Virginia version of watered down Mexican cuisine. The service is great, prices are cheap, it's in a good location for a downtown lunch, but as with all Mexican restaurants in the area it really misses the boat with bland food with essentially the same ingredients on each dish; pico from tomatoes that aren't really ripe, huge lump of sour cream and what they call guacamole, a tortilla, some cheese and an under seasoned meat. The food here really doesn't represent true Mexican cuisine at all, but if you want bland, quick, cheap and good service go here.

Had a decent meal here, though I don't really like the cheese that they use in the dishes it's kind of a runny and not as good as some other Mexican places. The guacamole is very cheap and pretty decent tasting. The best thing I had was the cheese dip with chorizo. I didn't see it on the menu so I just asked for it because most Mexican places have that. The sauce bottles on the table are el yucateco I can't stand that sauce, luckily she also had some Valentino in the back. The server was very nice and cute. My dining companion had a steak and he said it was very tough. This location is in a very weird spot that you can't see from the street it's down a little sidewalk in the middle of a block. It's right across the entrance from the mall where chilis is.

Very good food and service. Tried the fajitas and they were reasonably priced and tasty. This may become my go-to Mexican restaurant in Charleston.

We had an earlyish Saturday dinner here while traveling through on the highway. Not the easiest to find. We had to drive around the block once with our GPS to find the restaurant and one more time to find good parking. I had the Burrito Shrimp and it was good. Plenty of shrimp, but lots of good veggies as well. Beans and guac were good too, but rice was kind of plain. Husband had some kind of chicken burrito that he said was good. Our 3 year old had a cheese quesadilla that was about the middle of the pack as far as quesadillas go at restaurants. The staff was attentive and our 3 year old got a kick out of flirting with one of the guys working. Nice to have some fun after an 8 hour drive! If I find myself in the area again at mealtime I would probably eat here instead of the chains restaurants in the mall across the street. Worth a try. A little dingy, but good food.

I have to admit I was surprised how delicious the food was. The servers are polite and stay on top of things. I think the prices are very reasonable and the servings are large. Check out Rio Grande you will not be disappointed!

My bf and I come here every time we're in town, great service, fast and friendly, really good, strong margaritas at reasonable prices, Tuesday night lime margaritas are only $1.99! They have your typical mexican fare, done well, and tastes fresh, but they also have really interesting dishes, my fav is the carne asada burito, steak, and veggies grilled to perfection, burito is served topped with cheese and salsa verde, comes with rice, beans, and pico, sooo good!

A winning combination of good food, fast service, and affordability. This place is packed during the lunch hours, and it's easy to see why: most lunch dishes are around $5, and after I ordered I had my burrito in under 5 minutes. The food is good, too! As a Californian my expectations of West Virginian Mexican food were low, but a few details pleased me. The salsa, while mild, was not tomato sauce. The chicken burrito was of a generous size and very flavorful. The fifth star is absent because this is comfort Mexican food without focus on authenticity or high service, but they are outperforming other restaurants in this price range by far. P.S. I didn't get a chance to review the margaritas for work purposes, dangit!

Rio Grande is a nice restaurant kind of hidden in behind a strip mall in downtown Charleston. The food was authentic, the portion size massive - really great value for the price. I had the green salsa pork with beans, rice and extra salsa (which was fresh and actually spicy!). The atmosphere is okay - I suggest you sit in the booths at the front. They have some great Mexican beers. These guys are open on Sunday nights which was amazing - otherwise we would have had a lousy hungry evening. Charleston seemed to be a ghost town on the weekend.

Rio Rocks! Their food is fabulous and they get it to you within minutes of ordering. Menu items, including adult beverages, are reasonably priced. They do the chips and salsa (very tasty) thing as a free app, get some guac and queso to round this out - you won't regret it. Service is great! They're open every day of the week for lunch and dinner.

Rio Grande has some of the best Mexican food in Charleston, WV. My parents and I visit on a near weekly basis. The salsa is delicious and they offer all of the Mexican staples. If you want to visit Rio Grande, I recommend starting at Rio Grande approx. 1 hour-ish before the start of your movie for dinner. Enjoy a meal and have a few drinks. The margarita is yummy. Then, head on out to the movie theater (Park Place Cinemas is within walking distance) and enjoy the movie of your choice. Its an enjoyable and relaxing night out in Charleston.

Oh my goodness am I happy I finally found this place!! It's across the street from Chilli's in the mall, just past the sushi restaurant and travel agency. This place is way better than Cozumel which is really the only other Mexican restaurant I have found nearby to compare to. Rio has a huge menu with good prices, the food was ready super fast, the service was super friendly, and the most important part the food was delicious! I just had a standard burritos delux because I wanted to start off with something simple but now that I see how good they did with that I will definitely be branching out to other menu items. It's in kind of a sketchy looking space but totally worth the weird walk!

I was surprised at how good my meal was. My order of pork carnitas tacos came with three, large tacos filled with some of the most flavorful carnitas I've had (maybe they took a few cues from the pulled pork of local bbq restaurants?). The verde sauce that accompanied these tacos was a perfect tangy, mildly spicy addition that I continued to eat with tortilla chips after the tacos had already left me feeling gluttonous. The chips and salsa preceding the meal were tasty and (I believe) made in house. The large murals on the walls near the booth I sat in were a nice choice in decor - I don't think the place needed tv sets playing snowboarding highlights, but who am I kidding, I was too busy ravaging verde sauce covered carnitas to truly care who stuck their landing. A few negatives would be the flour tortillas (for shame), no draft beers, and a somewhat apathetic wait-staff, BUT the food was very good, plentiful (especially for the price) and came out extremely fast. Given my limited time in Charleston and my lack of mobility, I will be hard pressed to not go here again... tomorrow.

Best Mexican food in Charleston thus far! If you want it SPICY you must say you want it authentic Mexican or they will make it bland due to the number of people around Charleston who like bland food.

Great food. Super fast service. Chips and salsa came within a minute of placing my order. The food was in front of me less than 5 minutes later. Huge menu with most meals around $8 or less. Hidden away, but worth the search.

Pretty standard Mexican restaurant fare. Fun atmosphere, good service. However, relative to other similar places, I find the food at Rio Grande to be overly salty.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
