In Waukesha, if you want to eat Mexican, there are several choices. The one I liked best was Taqueria Jalisco #3, but it moved uptown to a railroad station, and got yuppified. So now for "real Mexican" as opposed to Taco John's or other, there is Cafe el Sol de Mexico. It's across from the Post Office and the YMCA. The waitstaff is all Hispanic, as is some of the clientele. AFAIK, the Mexican offerings on the menu are "the real deal." They also offer a few "American" choices. You get the usual (in a Mex. restauant) basket of tortilla chips, and salsa when you sit down. Both were renewed at our request, after we'd eaten up the first batch. We finished the second batch during our meal. Waitstaff is used to explaining unfamiliar items on the menu. The food is not too spicy for Norteamericanos. One thing I like abt. this place is that you can have beef tongue (la lengua) as an ingredient instead of beef, chicken, or pork, if you ask for it, even if it isn't offered as a choice. I had a burrito suiza, as usual--huge burrito covered with Swiss (??) cheese. It is a meal in itself, although you can have it with a plate of rice and refried beans if you want. All "the usual" Mexican offerings are on the menu--haven't tried but a fraction of what's offered, but would be greatly surprised if it weren't all up to the same standard, which is high. Have eaten lunch there several times, and have never been disappointed.

This is easily my favorite Mexican restaurant, and perhaps my favorite restaurant in general. Their Enchiladas Suizas De Pollo (first item on the menu) is a near religious experience; especially if you add their chile de arbol hot sauce (I think that's what it is) which you may need to ask them for. Their tacos are also amazing. Corn tortillas are authentically doubled up, and the flour tortillas have great texture. The fajitas and chimichangas are also top notch. I've never left disappointed and I try to eat there at least once a week. In fact, usually when I'm done eating, I want to hug the cook. It's SO GOOD.

Love their chips and salsa, tostadas and buriitos. Their rice and beans are my absolute favorite!! Perfect for those late nights since it is close to home. Menu has a huge variety of choices; you'll need to go back again and again to try everything.

Perfectly located next to the YMCA. I follow the plan on Tuesdays of working out for 1hr until I feel like I'm going to pass out and then order the all you can eat tacos and eat until I'm going to throw up. Great local spot, not fancy, classical cantina where more Fantas than Margaritas are served.

I've been here for late night stops and once for breakfast. It's a little dive with great cilantro, onion tacos (my favorite) . It's very reasonably priced and open late when everything else is closed. The staff is friendly and accommodating. I've also had chili rellenos and thought it was great. The breakfast was both mexican and american and large portions. I have enjoyed the food every time. It's one of my favorites in waukesha late night! Take out is nice too.

I ate there for the first time tonight. I got there a little after 9pm and ordered the Caldo de Camaron ( shrimp soup ) and 2 crunchy beef tacos just to try a couple different things. I had to add a little salt to the soup but other than that, the flavor was great! And the crunchy beef tacos.... AMAZING! Definitely going back and it's super close to where I live

Not your run of the mill Mexican. The al pastor was very tender and had the right amount of spice. Beans and rice were standards. Had good service even though it was someone being trained. Combination plate was way too go.

The atmosphere was very typical, and a little bit scattered. The service wasn't that great as we didn't get checked up on despite the fact the place was near empty. There food portions were fine, but the 8-10$ for a meal still wasn't worth it.

Thought it was just okay. Had the taco dinner and felt everything could use more flavor, including their salsa, which was quite bland. When I asked if they could add cheese to my tacos, the waiter said sure, without telling me there would be an extra charge. When the bill came, there it was... $1.95! Doubtful I will return.

They ran out of salsa which is odd for. Mexican Restaurant. When we asked for some hot sauce or jalapeños they fried a jalapeño which cost $2.00. No problem. The guacamole Mexicano was their regular guacamole with onions on it. We added salt. The burrito California needed salt or something. My second margarita was brought back in the same glass with the same lime ( already squeezed) and no refresh of salt on the rim. Really nice waitress who tried her best. We won't be back but the other reviewers seemed happy. ???

During the winter, we go here for lunch at least once a week (and sometimes 2-3 times). The service is fast!! We get our meals in plenty of time to eat at a regular pace and still get back to work on time. The prices are good for the amount of food you receive and the food is excellent. Best salsa: fresh and generously supplied; they do not charge for refills like some other restaurants. The tortilla chips are not the greatest, but they are edible and usually fresh. I always order the chili relleno with a chicken taco, rice, & beans. Very seldom am I dissatisfied (tho with as often as we go, there's bound to be an off day once in a while). I cannot say enough good things about the service: fast, friendly, courteous. If you get a chance, definitely try this place out, especially at lunch. And if I lived in Waukesha, I'd definitely be there for dinner and late night too.

Best Mexican food in Waukesha County, definitely one of the best in Wisconsin! Great food, Great pricing, fair drink prices. I went there for the first time by chance tonight, and it was amazing. Felix was our server, he was very nice and helpful! I'll be back here soon! (Try the tacos al pastor! They make their own refried beans and they are the best I've ever had)

This is one of my two favorite places to go for Mexican in Waukesha. I love coming for Taco Tuesdays - $1 tacos. You cannot go wrong with their chicken tacos!

Great restaurant. I ordered off of the lunch special menu. It was more than enough food at a great price. The Al Pastor meat was FANTASTIC!

There were "iffy" elements throughout the meal that canceled out the good things. The chicken tacos had the most delicious, stewed and pulled chicken. But the corn tortillas were brittle and they tasted old. I ditched the tortillas and just enjoyed the filling. The beans and rice looked delicious, but the rice was dry (I think old and reheated), not very tasty and the beans had no flavor. The chips and salsa were great and the salsa tasted very fresh. The queso fundido is a congealed mess, it's not chile con queso, so beware. The dining room was cute and had a taqueria feel. I think I would have enjoyed it more, if I had been looking for a late night, post bar crawl, tacos and margaritas type of night.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
