This is an excellent place to stop for a late night snack as you walk from bar to bar on Tower Avenue. I found the portion size of my gyro a bit too large even though I was intoxicated and felt as though I could eat everything in sight. I'm not sure I'd venture into this place for lunch or even dinner but that's primarily because I know it as a drunken food stop. The owner is actually from Greece!

Dried out pita bread (actually crunchy) and super strong onion. I like onions, but a gyro onion should be sweet and not so strong it burns your mouth. Over priced and poor quality. The onion wasn't even cleaned well. I had brown skin parts of the onion in my salad. The salad was super salty too. The olives were good though.

While the gyros were tasty, the kabobs were over cooked and had far too much lemon pepper on them. They were dry like the Gobi. Another thing to note is when I went last summer, they had a pretty enormous fly problem. Two or three fly traps were in the kitchen, and they were getting pretty full. I won't fault them for trying to handle it, but in such a small kitchen space, I would've liked to see the owner be more proactive than fly paper. The service I experienced from the workers there though, was very nice. They were polite, precise, and fast.

I am changing my tune on this place. I've been there twice more since my initial review. The menu has been modified they only offer gyros or kabob now. NO fries. :( (they were good) Both visits this summer have resulted in my eating a gyros and shortly thereafter becoming violently ill. I guess the filth and disarray of the place I found charming on visit one came back to bite me in the ass. Thats a pattern. I'm not a masochist. I'm done with this place!!!

Kostas ended up being the most interesting thing that happened on one of my many trips to the Twin Ports area. I found myself in town on a blustery spring night. I stayed in one of motels along US 2/53 in Superior, and after dropping off my bags I decided to grab something to eat. I drove down Belknap past UW-Superior but nothing caught my eye. I circled the blocks a few times downtown but I just wasn't in the mood for what I saw. I'd either been there before or wasn't interested. I turned up Tower Avenue and the picking got slim. I got stuck waiting for a train to cross for what seemed like an eternity, and as it passed I accelerated down the road, figuring on heading back toward the hotel and getting Subway for the nth time. As I drove I glimpsed a lit storefront in a dilapidated commercial building to my left. Gyros - why the hell not? I pulled a quick U-turn and parked along the unlit side street near a vacant lot and hurried inside. The interior of the place matched the state of the neighborhood. A small counter was immediately left of the door, with the fryers and meat cone behind. A row of old fast food boothes lined the other wall. The entire place had the yellow patina of grease and smoke. A lone tv sat on several boxes toward the back. There were three other people in the shop, all looking at me warily. The youngest, who looked about 16, got up from a booth and walked behind the counter and gave me a smile. I ordered a gyro fries and a soda from the cooler along the wall. I also asked for a copy of the receipt for my expense report, to which he gave me a quizzical look then wrote my order on a piece of paper. As he dropped the fries into the oil he apologized because there wasn't much soda selection - mostly Super Chill store-brand root beer. I grabbed a can and sat down at a booth facing a 40-something dude in a stocking cap and sweatpants. He looked at me for about thirty seconds, shrugged, then proceeded to continue with his conversation with the others, all the while picking stems and seeds out of a large bag of weed. I took off my jacket and went to the restroom. The single bathroom was predictably disgusting, but no worse than Parthenon's in Madison after bar time. The difference here is that Kostas is several miles from UW-Superior. When I returned another person had come in and was sitting with the other dude at the booth, and he was talking with the kid behind the corner. Apparently the kid had just been busted by the cops and as he brought out my gyro and fries he posited that his situation would be best resolved by staying with his public defender, because "those guys deal with these kinds of cases all the time." I ate my gyro and tried to appear as though I wasn't eavesdropping, staring at the small TV in the back. To be honest the gyro itself was pretty good, and the fries weren't too bad either. Yes, I did get indigestion later on but that happens everytime I have a gyro. I'd even return if I found myself craving a gyro in Superior, although the gyros at Nikos further down Tower are better. I'd put the gyros a bit below Parthenon's or Oakland Gyros but quite above what you normally get in a mall food court or restaurant. The only reason I give this place two stars is because I could never actually recommend that someone else go there, not unless I knew the person pretty well. It wasn't like I felt in danger at Kostas, because I grew up on the mean streets of Madison. I didn't even feel all that unwelcome because the situation was just so damn ridiculous. A place like this is kind of like a dive bar - you'd only go with people you trust not to freak out about it. I love Kostas because I got a helluva story and a not-too-bad gyro out of the deal. But I'd say stay away unless this is the kind of thing you're looking for.
