We were hungry and some distance from the Twin cities so stopped here. the usual disgusting Wisconsin restaurant. Salad is a hunk of lettuce with some horrible dressings brought to the table. the prime rib was served swimming in some liquid as is the norm in Wisconsin with no place to dump the crap out. Wish McDonalds was in these rural areas.A good idea is to pack a lunch when visiting Wisconsin even though Door county has some passable food(due to the number of Chicago people who visit no doubt)

Wonderful! Delicious food and terrific service! We celebrated an early Thanksgiving in the Northwoods over Columbus Day Weekend and indulged in a fantastic dinner at The White Stag. It has been a family favorite for 30+ years. On this particular visit we had (1) 7 year-old, (2) 2 year-olds, and (7) adults in our party. Since we were eating out with a few youngsters, we arrived right at 5pm and were immediately seated in one of the front dining rooms (which they were kind enough to dedicate solely to our large group.) Three adults ordered the haddock, two adults chose the pork chops (the house special), and two had the en brochette, with a couple orders of mushrooms and onions shared between the table. All entrées were terrific- everyone cleaned their plates! We also appreciated that they allowed us to share our meals with the kids, so they could sample the different dishes without needing to order them a big meal. Between the wedge salad, baked potato, and fresh bread, our large group left full and happy. As one of our family members noted, "Now this is the authentic Northwoods dining experience!" Will we be back? Definitely!

This was my grandfather's favorite restaurant in the 1960s and I don't think anything has changed since then. It makes the big Chicago chain steak restaurants pale in comparison. This is the real thing. The menu is on one page. The wedge iceberg lettuce salad is amazing; the lettuce is perfect; cool, crisp, and fresh. The three dressings are out of this world and can be mixed and matched to create your own. The meat is always top notch quality, but when the restaurant is really humming you should make sure you get it done the way you like it. Managing the dozens and dozens of steaks being grilled at the same time can mean that things have usually run on the more done side of your order. Such a paired down, simple menu and simple ingredients are done to perfection.

After reading reviews this was a must stop. I should have paid more attention to the critics. We all ordered New York Strip steak @ $25.00. Not a typical strip steak as they had bone in. My first bite was a large piece of gristle I needed to spit into my napkin. Not very tender, flavor ok. Also had mushrooms that were just ok. Special cottage cheese puree for baked potatoes, I would have preferred sour cream. Rolls were good, but I didn't go for the rolls. Sat at bar for after dinner cocktail and was served by the unfriendliest bartender we have ever come across. Isn't that a bartending prerequisite? Won't be back.

White Stag Inn is a old school traditional Wisconsin Supper Club. They serve a short menu famous for steak and potatoes. The Pork Chops were delicious and I would say as good as their finest steak. The salads are quartered heads of iceberg lettuce served in bowls of wedges. The dressings were homemade and Russian, French and a Garlic. My favorite was the French however I had hoped the Russian was better, it seemed to lack the creamy and zesty sweet I was looking for. Potatoes get served with a cottage cheese and chive spread that was excellent. Next time I'm going to have the Porterhouse.

Best grilled shrimp in world! Been going here for decades. Wonderful family owned supper club. I remember the infamous waitress Sally and when waitresses had to recite the menu to guests. Great memories.

I only recently learned what a "supper club" is. And I guess I am not alone. Either way, according to my lovely wife, who has been frequenting the Eagle River area for close to 1 trillion years (one of those summer campers), this is a go to for a nicer dinner. And I see why. Went a bit early and got a drink at the bar. I overhead the bartender speaking trash on the Cubs. Alas, it was on the day they got no hit by Cole Hamels...I digress. Got some Spotted Cow. $4? Seems like a good price, I think? Who knows, since I can't get that delicious beer in Chicago. Obviously went with the rib eye, medium rare. Felt it was not cooked consistently, so some areas more flavorful than others. Potato on side is perfect, along with the chives and cottage cheese I believe. And butter. Probably needs a little more butter, but that is always on the table, just for you, don't worry. Am I the only one who is not a huge fan of wedge salads? Seems like a lot of work to then jus put cheese and dressing on. Although I will say the homemade dressings were a nice touch. Combine all three. Seems crazy, I know, BUT JUST DO IT. Service was great, quick. Fun crowd. And if you go to camp nearby/have connections with any, you will surely see someone you know.

The White Stag has been a family tradition for almost 60 years and it always delivers an incredible dining experience. Our party of eight was seated immediately on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend and the service all night was fantastic. Almost every steak on the menu was ordered by at least one of us. Three of the kids and Grandma had the En Brochette and it was plenty for each. The rest of us chose from Porterhouse, sirloin and filet mignon. Several of us had a lot to take home because the wedge salads, rolls and potatoes were so filling! We suggest taking home a piece of the White Stag and buy a quart jar of the Russian Cream salad dressing to go. Here is hoping many discover the White Stag during the Summer of 2015. Service was not the best as they were short staffed. I ordered swordfish and said specifically to the waitress to not over cook it because it comes out to dry. Of course it was overcooked and dry. So I reordered the haddock and it came out under cooked. I didn't want to send it back because my family (who eats here often) said the cook has a bit of an attitude so I didn't want to tick him off even more. The salad and potato was good but it's hard to mess that up. Since its a steakhouse I guess I should have had steak.

I have driven by the Stag many times but have never tried it. Would have to say that for the price, the food quality was spot on! Came out hot & fresh. Very rich entrees, nice atmosphere & pleasant customer service. Not the greatest for small kids but my teenager enjoyed it. A must try in the northwoods!

Just a darn good old-fashioned steak house! But the two gaint smoked smoked pork chops is my favorite, with real cherry sauce! Really not a place for kids#!

Went there for a special dinner. We were served by a server who just started and there was nobody over seeing him. At these prices I expect a seasoned waiter. Not someone who doesn't know what they're doing He didn't know anything about the wine options. He said "well I'm only 18 years old and I don't know anything about wine". I finally had to go to the bar to ask about their available bottles of wine and the manager assisted me. Thank goodness. We ordered fillets and they were very good and done according to our wishes. I had requested blue cheese on my steak and the waiter did not give it to me. When I brought it to his attention he said that he could get it for me; it's in the refrigerator. I said I did not want cold blue cheese, I wanted it melted on the steak and he said "oh I've never had anybody request that before so I didn't know how to put that order through." All in all we had a good dinner however the service left a lot to be desired. If you go be sure to ask for a seasoned waiter. Not someone who's just learning how to serve. It ruins the dinner. When I brought this up to the manager he said "he's new and he's a work in progress." if that's the case then I don't expect to pay the same price as for someone who knows how to serve.

We love the White Stag and have been coming here on our annual pilgrimage for about 20 years. Steaks are consistently excellent and we love the excessive supply of jus served with the steaks. Ambiance is wonderful. Might it be nice if there was more variety to the menu? Sure, but this place does a few things and does them really, really well. We'll continue to return and look forward to it every time.

  • Mark M.

They are very uncompromising with their 10 item menu. Steaks were good and well cooked, but expect no veggies and iceberg lettuce with naught but 3 choices of forgettable salad dressings to go with your meal. The service was abysmal, which seems at odds with the cost of the boring dishes. Leave your kids at home.

This place is awful. I have been coerced by family members to eat here once per year for nearly three decades, and the only thing consistent is hugely overpriced inconsistent food. The menu has not changed in decades. At last week's annual visit, I ordered a $10 hamburger (called a "ground sirloin sandwich" to justify the high price), and ordered it medium. I got a burger burned on the outside but stone cold red inside. Waitress didn't come back until long after the meal was over. No fries were available, only a baked potato, which just does not make it with a burger. You would think that for ten bucks that they could provide some lettuce, tomato, and a slice of onion for that burger, but, alas, that was not to be. Over the years, I've had the filet mignon, chicken ("Dave's way" with enough garlic to choke an elk), pork chops, and the sometimes grizzly beef chunks called "en broche". Although I have had an average meal on a good day, consistency isn't their strong suit. And frankly, a quarter of a head of lettuce does not a salad make. Their baked potatoes are, well, common baked potatoes, usually served with literally a half a pound of butter. Yes, the 'topping' is a unique blend of cottage cheese and sour cream, but not even close to justifying the cost of these meals. Let's consider the ambiance of this place - surly staff and the incessant paging to the wait staff over the speaker to pick up their orders. There are enough stuffed fish and deer heads to satisfy any budding taxidermist, but when eating under a dead deer's nose, it is hard to get past the creepy factor. The walls have copies of 18th century artwork in heavy frames that just scream "old". And walking into the place, you are first greeted with a sign that mobile phones must be turned off before entering. That is funny on a couple of levels - good luck getting any 3g or 4g way out here, and the clientele isn't exactly of the generation that would be skyping their friends on their smart phones. Maybe this was considered good back a few decades ago, but with the high prices and a stale menu, there is nothing here to recommend. They don't even have a kid's menu! Sure, they have a white-painted buck out front, but that alone isn't enough to make this a good place to eat. Don't waste your time or money on this 1950s relec. Eat elsewhere. . . anywhere.

We went to the White Stag Inn for our 22nd wedding anniversary. I look forward to the icy wedge of lettuce with the Russian dressing and blue cheese crumbles. I also got my personal favorite the smoked pork chop, which was delicious. One glitch at the time we went which was early was that they had forgotten to cook the baked potatoes, so they were not available during our meal. The service was quick and very good. I will continue to return to the White Stag Inn as it is always good food and service.

Place is amazing. A true Wisconsin staple. Homemade salad dressings are out of this world. Steaks, shrimp, pork chops, baked potatoes, can't go wrong.

Old fashioned supper club from days gone by..... It's been in the same family for nearly 60 years. This is the ideal place to go if your looking for that big steak and potato dinner. Steaks are prepared on an indoor charcoal grill in the restaurant; No food fryer in the entire restaurant. Excellent quality meat. Prices were reasonable for a big steak A very nice nostalgic and expansive bar. Looks like a scene out of a 1950's movie. Alcohol drinks appropriate priced. Brady old-fashion made by one of the owners (female sister) was only mediocre, which is about the only negative thing I can say about the place. All in all, an excellent value for a steak dinner. Try it. It's worth the drive!

As part of our tour of Wisconsin Supper Clubs we had dinner at the White Stag this evening. We arrived at 5:00 and were seated and served immediately. When we left it was very busy as it tends to be on Saturdays in the summer. My wife and I both had steaks. She had filet mignon and I had the skewered steaks. Both were cooked perfectly. Cooking them over charcoal gives them a delicious carmelized crust. We both accepted the offered au jus, and it was delish. We are also fans of the wedge salads with three home made dressings. The menu at the White Stag is small. They do a few things very well with a lot of tradition. I love this place. Complaining about wait times in a Northwoods restaurant over 4th of July is like complaining about the church being too small at Christmas mass.

When an establishment has a huge menu I tend to think they they really aren't doing anything particularly we'll. The menu at the White Stag is short and simple. The salad and sides (while great) are minimalist. It's all about the steak and chops here. And it has always been done to absolute perfection. Every time we vacation in Rhinelander we make it a point to dine here and we have never been disappointed. A gem in the north woods.

It seems to me that reviews for most restaurants are either love it or hate it. Well, I guess I am guilty. At the White Stag I love it. Every time I am fortunately enough to be in the big woods I stop by the White Stag at least once. The people are friendly to me, the drinks are big, and the steaks and salad are, in my view, among the best in the USA. Next week I will be there again and really looking forward to another great dinner or two with my friends.

Big Fish in a Small Pond would be a more appropriate name. We had a table of four, each ordered a filet mignon - one was over cooked and another sinewy, so I guess 50% success is good enough. Waitress who never introduced herself was a cool stiff breeze every time she felt like waiting our table. Pleasantries were not her strength. And the owner is a prick. He will watch you pay for a $250 tab, preach about restaurant rules, then wish you good luck on the road. No wonder we were one of four tables at 8pm surrounded by 30 empty tables and glazed over staff. This place would be bankrupt in any other town.

This place was a gluten-free dream. Pretty much everything on the menu is gluten free! The only salad is a wedge of iceberg lettuce, one per person brought to the table in a heap and plopped into your individual salad bowls by the waitress. She also brings three little tureens of salad dressing, made right in the restaurant, all three are gluten free. I liked the garlic one the most. Then you order a meat item from a short list that includes filet mignon and pork chops, the meat is thrown on a grill by the chef, and delivered to you with a baked potato. They don't even use sour cream on the potatoes (which sometimes can have hidden gluten in it). Rather, they serve a delicious blend of cottage cheese and herbs. I was in heaven. Would definitely come here again.

The greeter/bartender was incredibly rude as usual. We have tried this spot repeatedly and have always been treated horribly by the bartender. The funny part is that we have encountered 3 different bartenders...they must strive for rudeness. The atmosphere leaves much to be desired. Not a friendly experience but good food. Steaks are solid, as are the prawns and homemade salad dressings but swordfish was very fishy.

Fantastic steak cooked on REAL charcoal right in front of you. A big hunk of iceberg lettuce with a lazy Susan full of homemade dressings. Love the north woods atmosphere sort of old supper club type feel with a really neat old bar. One of our favorite stops on the way up to our cabin.

My first White Stag experience was in the late 1950's while fishing in the area with my Dad and friends. We were told that the then chef / owner had worked for the George Diamond steak house in Chicago and that the menu was pretty much 100% comparable, which was exactly true. The steaks that night were wonderful and they still are, it's a simple Northwoods restaurant that happens to serve some exceptional food, just as they have for so many years. Incidentally, we've never had anything but friendly service!

  • John C.

Good steak but that's all. Hostess rude, bartender rude, service slow, salad lame. Our server was great but she was overloaded and received little assistance from the bus boy's. We have been going to this restaurant for 30 years but will not return. Too bad it no longer lives up to our past experiences. Do yourself a favor and eat anywhere else unless you like being treated as if you are doing them a favor by waiting to be seated, greeted and served a easily duplicated meal.

  • Chris B.

They begin seating at 5. Can sit at bar if you come earlier. Bartender and waitstaff not very friendly most of the time. The food is what it is and they do it very well: old school cocktails. A wedge of iceberg lettuce with three homemade dressings you can mix and match. Rolls (frozen and reheated, and if you want more they charge you) ok. Char broiled steaks and seafood pricy but great. Shrimp are fantastic. Not for young families as there is no kids menu. I guess they could split an entree, but it's not cheap. Quintessential Northwoods supper club. Great cocktails. Worth going back each time for the food!!

I've driven past this place a gazillion times during the day while traveling north from Rhinelander. At the behest of some friends of ours my wife and I met here for dinner and drinks. Your steak is cooked right out in the dining room on a huge charcoal fired grill. Kind of cool. The "salad" was nothing more than a head of iceberg lettuce that had been quartered and served with their own made in house dressings. Pretty lame. None of the 3 dressing choices, french, russian, and I don't remember, were noteworthy. My ribeye was done as ordered, medium rare. That in itself can be accomplishment of note at some of the places I've been. However not worth the big city $$$ charged. Service was slow but friendly. Drinks were on the pricey side. All in all, nothing special.

  • Patrick H.

Good solid place. Friendly service and nice steakhouse/lodge decor. The salads could use a little more than just lettuce but the dressings are great. I ordered a fillet mignon and my friend ordered the haddock. I got to try both and have to give a nod to the steak. Next time I'd order it without all the extra juice they pour over it. The wine selection could be a little better. If they featured some higher end wines they'd probably make some more money than they do currently. All in all, a nice place for a hearty meal.

The White Stag Inn needs to add the slogan "Perfectly cooked steaks since the 1950's". I was in awe at how my brother's medium rare steak was actually cooked medium rare while my medium steak was perfectly medium. We even compared our steaks noting the difference. That's saying something. Often steakhouses can't cook medium rare any different than medium well. The Stag has serious skill behind the grill. It gets better... To start they drop off a trio of salad dressings. One non-creamy caesar, french, and a russian. All homemade. Bonus points. Our orders were placed and soon a basket of rolls appeared along side butter in those small envelope packages. Maybe it's me but I always picture miniature elves in a factory carefully assembling those little packages of butter. Singing, dancing, and enjoying their assembly line of buttery goodness. Anyway, another bowl filled with wedges of ice berg lettuce were brought out and we all dove in like Phil Dunphy of Modern Family. The steak. A 12 oz ribeye. I'm serious when I say this is one of the best steaks I've had. Frankly, I wouldn't be surprised if the only seasoning was salt and pepper. It's all a great steak needs. And grilled over charcoal by a man wearing a 1980's chef hat, it was simply divine. And it's topped off table side with a beef broth jus that added rich flavor. But the best part of dinner was the cottage cheese topping for the baked potato. Get this...a cottage cheese blend was used instead of sour cream as a healthier option. It even says it right on the menu! How ironic - a few rolls of white bread with butter, a monster steak marbled with fat, a few tablespoons of butter melting on top of my potato and a cottage cheese spread on top because, hey, it's healthier than sour cream, right? Loved every part of this place. It's not fancy, it's not modern, and most importantly, it's not Chicago. It's an old school steak house standing proud in the middle of Northwoods country.

This is as good as it gets, been going here since the bar old Chicago style had no opening, but they did cut a opening years back so the bartender of great age could get thru instead of swinging his hips over as done in the past! Now I would drive 5 hrs to have a steak done right here any time,Salads wow can you say fresh lettuce!Dressings home made and yes you can buy them to go I get a years worth each visit! The baked potatoes, hard to screw up yes most places micro wave YUCK !this place its baked and slathered in butter! sour cream a dab/dollop? to clog your arteries! Last but least the meat Best grade money can buy yes you don't buy this beef at the local market ! Its to die for enjoy! I have been here many times over the years with family and the service and food have always been top notch. The steaks are great, the potatoes are cooked perfectly and that smoked porkchop is to die for. This has been and I hope continues to be a terrific spot to chat, celebrate and stuff yourself silly.

Have been coming for years. Wedge lettuce/salad, haddock are outstanding, drinks are cheap. Service is on par for the price. Like any place up here, don't expect speedy meals on holidays (like a few reviewers complained about -- come on, really?). To give 1 star because of 1 slow experience after 30 years of good food/service isn't fair.

    (5)
  • Brett P.

The environment was great but the prices were ridiculous. The steak was equivalent to a $12 at a chain restaurant. The $7 salad and rolls consisted of a quartered head of ice berg lettuce and 3 choices of dressing... that's it. Next time, we'll spend our money someplace where it will go a little further.

It's hard to find a stand out restaurant in this area and surrounding towns, however, White Stag shocked us. We've had our share of "mediocre" food in Tomahawk, Rhinelander, and areas surrounding. This place is a gem. Their menu is very limited, however, everything on it is done with expertise and perfection. I recommend the smoked pork chops and the skewered steak. Both are worthy of the 5 star rating. The pork chops are served with a wonderful chutney, the steak is served with a knock your socks off au jus. The simplicity of the wedge salad and homemade dressings sit perfectly along side your entree. Order the coffee and you will get a pot of freshly made joe to fill your cup 'til your heart's content. And, if you are a drinker, try their Old Fashioned (mine done sour, with whiskey). One of the best (even better than the ones made at Al-Gen, and they do a great Old Fashioned!)

This was a wonderful dining experience. The north woods ambiance, the cocktails and the food was KILLER! We all got the En Brochette. Perfectly cooked. We also ordered mushrooms. One order feeds two or more. The potato topper was really tasty, as was the wedge salad and the homemade dressings they bring to the table.

I'm already having a nostalgic night, reliving old memories (see my Camp Ojibwa review I just did) so I might as well bring thoughts of White Stag out of deep storage. The Stag is an old school steakhouse, that probably is a dying breed in this country. The setup is pretty simple. Most of what they serve is steak, and it's definitely what you want (though I'd imagine that their local fish is good as well). The cuts are masterfully grilled and served after receiving your standard issue quarter head of lettuce, and rack of three dressings to choose from. Due to the size of the place and it being out of the middle of nowhere, they really do an amazing job with the food as word of mouth probably drives just about all new business there. But to those of us who know it, it's an institution. A rite of passage. And I hope it continues to stay the same and delight people as it has delighted me.

The best restaurant in the world. Once drove for 6 hours just to eat here. Would do it again. "8th Wonder of the World" would not be an exaggeration. It's impossibly hard not to order a steak here because they are ridiculously amazing. If you venture outside of a steak, the "pork chops" are like nothing I have ever experienced anywhere else in the world. You get two enormous chops of smoked ham on the bone with cherry sauce and it will blow your mind. I could eat my body weight in the potato topper. Quarters of iceberg lettuce even taste magical at the White Stag when covered in the delicious homemade salad dressings (which you can buy Mason jars of to take home if you ask.) This is a family run joint that's been here since the '50's and I've been in love with it since I was old enough to walk. It is unpretentious, it is in the North Woods, and I'm telling you - it blows the hell out of any snooty steak house you've ever tried.

I honestly cannot overemphasize how amazed I was by the White Stag Inn. Upon taking my first bite of the 12 oz Prime Rib, my only words were "holy shit." Amazing. But let me rewind. Upon being seated, we were served quartered heads of lettuce in nice wooden bowls with three dressing options (the Caesar was my choice, and was delicious). We ordered (the steak and the haddock), and soon we were in culinary heaven. The potatoes were delicious, and White Stag has a cottage cheese/chive combo instead of the normal fixings, which was delicious. But the centerpiece was the entrees. The haddock was amazing, the steak was superb (and cooked correctly! It's such a relief to find a place that knows what medium rare actually means!) and there's no question I'll be back soon. Phe-nom-e-nal.

Have been going there off and on since their father started the restaurant in the 50's. Food seemed a little better several years ago. The kids who run it now don't seem to be as engaging and friendly as the Father was. Seems a little over priced for the experience.

I am a HUGE steak lover. I've eaten steak at hundreds of restaurants, including that very "best" steak restaurants, and the best steaks I've ever had are at the White Stag. In full fairness and disclosure, I probably am a at least a little biased as I've been coming here each summer since I was a little girl, and "going to the Stag" has years of wonderful vacation memories associated with the experience, but I can say that despite the idea of the White stag getting my mouth watering in January, I've never once been disappointed by my actual meal, even after driving over an hour from our cottage to get there. I personally love the Ribeye, medium rare (and it's a real medium rare), with extra onions and mushrooms. I also love the iceberg lettuce salad with the three mixed dressings, and the baked potatoes with the cottage cheese-sour cream mixture are heavenly. I will say it is a restaurant with a few quirks - it's not exactly elegant (the decor is a bit odd with wood paneling, many antlers, and a lot of faux masters - kind of an ersatz German hunting lodge?), it's kinda of in the middle of nowhere, and the menu basically just focus on steask with a few other choices (though I've been told the chicken and shrimp are good although why anyone would try those when the staesk are so good I have no idea). But the food I would honestly put up against the best anywhere, and isn't that what you're going for anyway?

This is bar none my favorite restaurant. It's my favorite for sentimental reasons. This is the first restaurant I can remember going to as a little kid and really appreciating. If you order a steak here order the brochette. It's just chunks of sirloin on a skewer, but I have never tasted anything like it. I don't know what they do to it. People tell me that the brochette is so good because it is so much more tender and flavorful than the other cuts. It also happens to be one of the cheapest items on the menu. I have never bothered to order any of the other cuts. Other really good items on the menu are: The half chicken (Dave's Way), Haddock, Ecuadorian Shrimp, and the side dish grilled onions. I have to admit the salad dressing selection is slim. If you are a ranch fan try using the chive topping that they use for the baked potatoes. Hopefully you will be fortunate enough to dine here.
