    Restaurant has zero atmosphere but the food is delicious and ridiculously inexpensive. Run by a really nice family. Not in a neighborhood where tourists normally go but it's well worth the trip. We especially liked the goat paper soup, beef stew, and the vegetables, collard greens and spinach. But be careful. The servings are big. One order of the veggies alone with rice is enough for a meal. The Somali rice is also very tasty. And try the spicy ginger beer.

    It seems odd to write my 400th Yelp review about a business that I know is closing in a few days, but this place represents what I love about Yelping and blogging. Start with a small, clean "hole in the wall" family-owned cafe with delicious, home made, authentic ethnic cuisine made using family recipes. Add an owner with a story about how he was selected via lottery 13 years ago by the Catholic Charities organization to be brough to the United States from Kenya to begin his pursuit of the American Dream. An owner who is grateful for every customer who walked in the door and even more grateful for every kind word he and his family have received from the people he has come form relationships with over the past 4 years. An owner who is trying to put a son through college and has a daughter who will be starting college soon, while he is also going to school for computer science. He has two young daughters that were born in the U.S. but living with their grandmother in Kenya to be immersed in the culture of their roots, and gain an appreciation of what they have when they come to the United States. He plans to bring them back this summer. This is a story I can listen to over and over and over again...the story about someone that had an opportunity to come to our amazing country for a real chance to give his family a better life. It gives me goosebumps. The Beef Sambusa was amazing! The ground beef was seasoned beyond my expectations. The texture of the pastry was soft. I suspect it was heated in the microwave, but it didn't matter because it was originally made from scratch. All of the food here is. The Sogal Style Goat Meal is really just goat meat and rice, but it was some of the most flavorful rice I've ever eaten, and the goat was extremely tender and also seasoned perfectly. It was goat, so some pieces had fat and bone, but that's to be expected. My dinner included a small cup of mixed greens with ranch dressing, a soda or water, and a banana for dessert - a banana - as if I was in someone's modest home. How cool is that? I wish I knew about Sogal 4 years ago. I learned of it last year and never made it in until last night, hours after I found out via Facebook that they would be closing this Saturday. I couldn't let them close without visiting, and I'm so glad I did. African Hut, Don Quijote, and other great restaurants providing unique dining experiences have closed their doors over the years. Unfortunately there haven't been any or enough suitable replacements. Blue Star Cafe remains as the only place to get Somali food, and I plan to visit soon.

    I'm so sad... All the great reviews I read, I wanted to love this place. I ordered the goat dinner & took it to my hotel to relax and enjoy. The lady working was very sweet & I got such a great vibe from her, I honestly thought this would be a place I would return to time & time again!! But after driving across town & bringing it back to enjoy in my hotel room, the VERY FIRST BITE was full of hair!!! It was stuck in my throat so bad that I actually threw up. All & all, I came across about a dozen hairs like the one in the attached image. I hope I have another opportunity to try Somalian food someday.

    This restaurant has some of the best food I've ever eaten. For staters, I highly recommend their Somalian tea. It is the best tea I've ever had. It tastes like a sweetened chai tea but with traditional African spices included as well. I ordered the beef steak with Somalian rice. The beef steak was tender and delicious, spiced so well with grilled onions and bell peppers on too. The rice was great too, and you get a healthy dessert as a side with most meals: a banana. The employees are extremely positive and kind. They deliver the food right to your table. The building does have a family-owned cafe vibe, but trust me the food makes it worth your trip. There are comfortable lounge seats, and I look forward to becoming a regular to drink the tea and work on my laptop all the time.

    If Milwaukee wants to be taken seriously, then commercial stretches like the near-side of MLK need to be built up and supported with our spending dollars. As luck would have it, Sogal Cafe makes that really easy! Right now, I basically am living off their hearty Mahanazi soup (coconut milk/tomato/bean/onion), which also comes with two pieces of polenta and a lemon wedge. If I'm really hungry I'll get a tuna samosa and maybe a Coke in a bottle. Plus, the chai lattes are like a dollar-something and the people who work here are really nice. Give it a shot!

    Intimate, low-key place with amazing flavors. I've gone twice for lunch and each time was delighted with my meal. I especially liked the goat. The rice is super flavorful. You also get a banana with your meal, which I generally take with me because the portions are so large.

    Quick, convenient, and very friendly staff. I've had the curry chicken stew and chicken wings and both are good! I've also tried the vanilla bean shake, which unfortunately was missing something, sweetness? Maybe that's how it's supposed to be though? The food is definitely more mild but overall good.

    Not to miss are the beef sambusa that have good heat. I would certainly recommend the Somali rice with goat meat! Some of the juices are from canned fruit, but most of the items on the menu are made in house. There is also a nice courtyard area to the side of the restaurant.

    I am all about trying new foods- especially ethnic cuisines I've never tried. This is categorized as ethiopian (which although delicious- ethiopian it is not) it is actually Somali food. In any case I stopped here for lunch and selected the beef stew with polenta. Holy cow they gave me a boatload of polenta (I ended up using 3/4 for another recipe for dinner that night)- the stew itself was amazing. I have never been a huge fan of it generally and this version had even fewer veggies (potatoes don't count) than an american stew- but the flavors were fabulous. It was bursting with spices and it had a bit of heat- the beef was tender (though I wish there was more beef) and I immediately searched google to find out how to make it myself. I look forward to trying more of their menu in the future.
