the food was great. I had mahi mahi and it was fabulous. The rice was plain but the fish made up for it. This restaurant is very pricey, so be prepared.

My wife and I happened to be in Milwaukee last week. Called RLI on the spur of the moment to see what was on the chalkboard menu. Mike the head chef answered the phone. We talked about what was on the menu and when he said that the season's first soft shell crabs were available that closed the deal. I asked Mike how he was preparing them, he told me and then quickly added: "of course you can have them prepared any way you like." Another absolutely first rate experience. The mussels were fresh and meaty, the soft shell were outstanding. The owner Jim Marks stopped by the say "hi." One appetizer, 2 entrees, 1 bottle of wine, 2 desserts, and coffee; $110. Worth every penny.

The building is pretty and the interior is warm and inviting. The hostess greeted us as if we were VIPs. We sat at the bar and ordered our cocktails which were made to perfection. They serve crackers at the bar that are so tasty, I had to stop myself so I didn't get full on them before dinner. The bartender recommended the calamari as an appetizer and it was amazing. So delicious with the parmesan crust. My husband ordered the fish special which was halibut and he said it was amazing. I ordered the black & blue filet which was cooked to perfection. Everything was deliclous, even the vegetables were tossed in a garlic butter and served warm, as if they were just sauteed, not sitting around in a steamer. For dessert we split a creme brulee that had just the right touch of vanilla. It was as wonderful as the dinner. Whenever we are on the north side we go here, it's the best place for seafood ever and the prices are in line with any other high quality restaurant. The staff was friendly, attentive and paid attention to detail. It is everything you can ask for at a quality establishment.

The River Lane Inn is a nice place for dinner, but it's really dark inside. Dark carpet, dark wood interior, dark exterior. The restaurant is very old looking, like an old barn. I wouldn't expect fine dining from here. Since the restaurant is sat further back from the main road, it's easy to miss. The service was lovely. Our server was very polite, out water was never empty, and our food was exactly right the first time. And now the food... The bread was the best! The rolls had something like caraway in them, and that makes me really happy. We both had the tender petite filet, and both our steaks were cooked perfectly. The steaks came with Yukon gold potatoes, which were perfectly cooked through and seasoned very lightly. Overall, the River Lane Inn was very quaint and I would go back.

Had dinner here on a Saturday night and could not be more complimentary. Calamari Parmesan is spectacular, crab cakes just as good and halibut cheeks appetizers all were heavenly. 3 or 4 of us had the Sanddabs, as did I, and these were great, more adequately described as extremely good. I'd eat this entree again tonight if I could. Grouper special was as good as Gulf Coast experiences, Sea Scallops were equally as good. Walleye was also excellent. Many compliments about the desserts as well. The great cook of the family, and high critic, thought all was exceptional. If you love seafood and know the difference between "The Red chain" fast food seafood, and fine dining preparation, you will love this restaurant. Can not wait to eat here again!l

This restaurant has been open for over 30 years. My family and I have been there many times..it never disappoints. last night our table of 6 enjoyed 3 appetizer orders of the cajun cheeks,,, our guests from SFO had never seen these on any menu. The perch fish fry with terriffic cold slaw is outstanding....it is always a pleasure to dine at the River Lane Inn

The food was decent at best. Certainly not good enough to be worth the price. I would return based on the food alone. The problem started the moment we walked in, when the host, who I assume was the owner, sat us and then whispered in my ear: "It is no hat night tonight." I saw no sign posted indicating that I could not wear a hat, and my hat was a designer hat that went with my outfit, not that it should matter, but it was a real turn off for him to do this. Frankly the rest of the meal was insignificant as far as whether or not we would return, but I have tried to be honest here. The food is a 5/10, value is a 3/10, overall experience was a 0/10 I would not recommend this establishment to anyone based on this one bad experience. If you want people to dress a certain way in your establishment, you post a sign so they are aware before they walk in and get surprised. I wear the same outfit in my Country Club's dining room all of the time, which does have a posted dress code, so this really caught me off guard.

The River Lane Inn has an excellent Cajun rub steak. They still have the chalkboard; however, it only has specials on it. This is more of a seafood restaurant and my parents say it is superb. Perhaps you seafooders would rate it five stars.

Moving from the downtown area, our family has felt the loss of great fare in the North Shore area. There are certainly some good options but we hadn't had our socks knocked off by anything...until River Lane Inn. This gem has been here for awhile. I heard of it from my grandparents that routinely had a date night there monthly, my grandmother always getting the Sand Dabs. We've had a variety of great food at RLI and have been most impressed with the atmosphere, service and great selection overall. As avid seafood lovers, there are incredibly options to consider with great specials every time we've frequented the restaurant. RLI quickly has become our "go to" place whenever we want a nice night out with great food and amazing service. The bill can add up but while you may spend an extra $25-$50 here vs. somewhere average, it's twice or more in terms of the experience so I feel we come out ahead each time! If you love wine, they have a great list! I always get wine and my husband gets a Brandy Old Fashioned or Manhattan, which they make VERY WELL. A great dining experience without being pretentious.

I had an excellent evening at the River Lane Inn. First of all, as a woman dining alone, I was treated better than I have been treated at any other restaurant I've visited in the US. The hostess was gracious and accommodating. The waitress handed me the chalkboard of specials and hurried off to get my cocktail, which was excellent! I selected one of the specials, but she came back quickly to tell me someone had just ordered the last one. So I asked her for recommendations. We settled on the Walleye. The entire meal was excellent! I finished with the most beautiful cappuccino I have ever been served. I have traveled all over the world and eaten at some really top notch restaurants - River Lane Inn was a treat. The price for the food is a great value. Everyone was friendly and the atmosphere was welcoming. Highly recommend that you check it out!

Very simple. Great fish and cheap owners. My biggest pet peeve is to charge a huge price for a glass of cola that costs them 10 cents and then NO REFILLS!!! Are you kidding me? You already charge too much for the fish and then can't pry open your wallet for another 10 cents worth of soda? Please! Hey River Lane Inn - wake up! You're not the only place for fresh seafood anymore! I would rather go to Devon's where I feel welcome instead of a cog in your greedy money machine!!

Pretty great food, but the prices are out of line. For dinner, there isn't an item on the menu under $20 and it just doesn't seem right. I think my rainbow trout was like $25. The fish fry is also very expensive, and they don't offer a choice, it only comes with french fries. I mean the quality is there, but the prices are not in sync. The calamari is very unique and delicious, so any sea food fan should come here at least once. The crowd's a bit older, so expect even a packed dining room to be somewhat subdued. I like to swear loudly and order shots in situations like that.

River Lane Inn get's a "BEST OF" award in my book for their Calimari Paremesan appetizer. Calimari pounded flat into a pancake shape, parmesan breaded, pan fired and served with a slightly thick lemony cream sauce. This is one of the great appetizers served in Milwaukee and must be ordered if you visit the River Lane Inn. In addition, the Sand Dabs and Cod Cheeks are some of the best seafood entrees served in Milwaukee. The interior is slightly dated - which makes for a great feel in the bar but not so much in the dining room (decor in the dining rooms is the only reason I did not give this place a 5 star rating). If you are looking an excellent seafood restaurant you can always rely on the River Lane.

Local places always are preferred, but I think Midwesterners have less taste buds than Coasters. As a Great Lake fish restaurant, I expected some great options, but the menu disappointed with Halibut, Shrimp and Trout. Nice local beers are always great in Milwaukee. I ordered the Walleye and it was pretty bland and overcooked. I am always surprised when I get great fresh spinach - so simple and so good, but a touch of garlic would have added the zest I prefer. The tomato sauce accompaniment was of spaghetti sauce variety. Most disappointing was rice scooped out of some big unseen bucket with no taste. Something of red color made it more attractive (I think). Service was good.

Menu items are a little pricey but not horrible. This is more of a place you go for a special night out instead of as a usual dining spot. I had their Parmesan calamari which was delicious and I usually don't eat calamari. I had one of their seafood specials which was also delicious. Their menu isn't extensive but they all seem to be quality entrees.

Primarily older and retired patrons. Pro: A very good place for a private business meal. Pricey selections. The filet was as good as, if not better, than Mr. B's. Con: Can be hard to find if you're not familiar with the area. Service can be hit or miss. My waitress was extremely slow. I waited 10 minutes after being seated just to get a menu while the next table was constantly being attended by 2 waitresses.

I have been going here for years, and admit I am biased - it is one of if not my favorite restaraunt in the area. Consistency is very high. Food quality is superb. for me a couple of items stand out. I routinely order the Calamari (steak, not rings) on the app menu as an entree, and they always accomodate. Also, I am an afficiando of Bread Pudding - and theirs with the whiskey sauce is to die for. In my mind, if you like seafood, perepared creatively, you cannot go wrong!

The waitress was outstanding. She had a great personality and guided us to make good choices on the menu. I had the blackened blackfish and it was really good. I'd definitely go again!

Wow. Recommended by a friend, Cheryl, my sister, niece and I enjoyed a lovely pre-birthday dinner. Everything we had was above average. The cajun scallops were devine. And we had to have the cajun halibut cheeks- a first for them and a trip down memory lane for me. We topped the meal off with raspberry sorbet and couldn't keep our spoons out of the dish- delish!

It is hard enough trying to find a great restaurant in the northern suburbs for dinner that isn't pizza or bar food. River Lane Inn was a great surprise because of all the restaurants in this area, who knew I would find one that would have really fresh local fish dishes...in Brown Deer? Really? Dining atmosphere is older, supper club. The building has some age to it, (as do some of the patrons....zing)....but really, the appeal of this place is that it is lightyears away from being pretentious or snooty...which is great. I would argue that despite the fact that you would rule out that this restaurant as an "affordable" place, you couldn't argue with the quality of the food...which is what most of the yelpers can agree is great. If this place was transplanted on the Lake Michigan shoreline, your money would have spent even more money for the view. Portion size of the fish was better than expected. My fiance's Rainbow Trout was butterflied and took up the entire plate. Lightly seasoned and moist. My panko crusted walleye size wise looked like a NY Strip steak. The fish was delicate with a light flake and went well with the tomato sauce. I would have opted for a little more brown crust, but the quality of the fish was what I was very pleased with. Dessert was a vanilla cheesecake made in house with a chocolate ganache topping (unique surprise). Wow. Save room if you can. Bill came out to be about $90.00 before tip for 3 glasses of wine, two main courses (with small salad starter) and dessert. I would struggle recommending this place to those that want to take someone for a "special occasion" because of the ambiance, but if you wanted to do a sit-down weekend dinner out and you live in this area and don't want to drive all the way downtown, then this is a good option for you. Foodies would appreciate it.

I've lived in Milwaukee my entire life, and I've never been to the River Lane Inn. I worked across the street from the River Lane Inn for 2 years and I never made it in. Well, a late work night tonight provided the right opportunity. The place was busy. It was boiled lobster night! Next to the menu on my table was a small chalk board, about the size of an etch-a-sketch. It listed the specials of the day, apps and entrees. I decided to order off the menu after a recommendation from my server. I started out with the crab cakes for my appetizer. I've heard that the River Lane Inn is one of the best restaurants in Milwaukee, if not the best, for seafood. It was definitely what they were known for. My crab cakes were smaller than I've had at most restaurants but there were three of them instead of the two larger cakes that are more common. I thought they were perfectly cooked. They weren't greasy at all and the color was very attractive, i.e. no signs of over-cooking. However, I was expecting more crab or at least larger pieces of crab. They tasted pretty good, but they weren't the best I've had in Milwaukee, and I was expecting them to be just that. My entree was terrific! Per my server's recommendation, I ordered the Cajun Sea Scallops with potato and Andouille sausage hash. The scallops were blackened and cooked perfectly, very delicious. The Andouille sausage and the sauce added some heat to the dish. This was more in line with what I expected from the River Lane Inn based on what I've heard over the years. The service was great. The atmosphere was comfortable, not too loud and not too quiet. Most guests were dressed casual, but the restaurant still had the upscale feel to it. In fact it was like an upscale supper club. I enjoyed my first visit to the River Lane Inn. I would certainly go back and I recommend that you visit them as well.

Calamari Parmesan is to die for. Six stars, seven stars...... In all my travels around the world, I have never heard of or had "pounded" Calamari. They actually pound it into a steak or slab, then pour melted Parmesan on it, just thinking about it is bringing tears to my eyes....... Take a look at the pics on Yelp. I have been three times over the past 10 years, I go to Milwaukee on business and make the pilgrimage to River Lane Inn. I would have been a fourth time, but they do NOT SERVE lunch :-(. The client I took there raved about the Cajun Scallops and the wine list. I am not a wine guy, but he knows his stuff. The Scallops were very large. The staff was perfect and the manager came over to ask how the meal was, when I told her that this was my third visit over 10 years, she was pretty happy, told me the history and was genuinely interested in feed back.

This place is amazing! The staff are extremely friendly. Love love the calamari and escargot. Best appetizers ever! Not those usual loopy fried calamari you'd expect, it's a whole piece and tastes AMAZING! The escargots are something else too! And my favorite entree is the jambalaya, don't forget to add shrimps too!

This restaurant is so quaint looking. Even on the inside it is was inviting. We were seated immediately and drink orders taken. There were lots of specials to choose from. The menu isn't too big. But, they will accommodate you with exchanging the sides with others that are not listed with that particular item on the list. I ordered the steak and it came with a side of potatoes. I noticed on the menu that one of the sides with other dishes was a "Wild Mushroom Risotto" which sounded amazing. I asked if I could have the Risotto instead of the potatoes and was told "no problem". The server also offered one of my fellow diners to cook her favorite fish in a different style and a different sauce than what was on the menu. I was so surprised and impressed on how customer centric they are. Just an FYI this is mainly a seafood restaurant. But they did have steaks too. Since I am not a lover of seafood unless it is Sushi I ordered the steak and Risotto. Both items were really good. The Steak had a perfect char and rare in the middle, it was so tender. I also had the Risotto which was delectable. I tried so hard to finish it because it was so good but I had to stop because if I ate anymore I would have exploded. My co-worker had the San Dabs, and while Wisconsin is in the Midwest, Sand Dabs are a fish from the Pacific. I hesitantly took a bite of it and it was spectacular. Very light and flaky. Now I know here at home on the Pacific I can order the San Dabs. Impressive service!! Delicious food. Definitely Recommended.

Dined with a group of out of town business guests on a Thursday night. Was lucky enough to get a table for eight with only an hour's notice. Food and service were top-notch. The folks in our party were from around the globe - Brazil, China, Belgium, Mexico - all were pleased with the entrees. I had the Halibut from the special board and enjoyed every bite. Being a last minute restaurant choice made because of it's close proximity to the hotel, my expectations were far exceeded. What a nice surprise. I'd give five stars but getting to the restaurant was a bit dicey due to road construction, and they were out of the lobster entree on the special board (at 6:00?).

Welcome to the 70s! When I stepped in the front door, I was transported back in time to 1975. The brown wood chairs that were a staple of bars since the 50s, the purple wall color, the plasticky tablecloths. Service, however, was consistently friendly, and efficient. Our fish dishes were well prepared, but basic and uninspired, with side dishes that consisted of plain steamed veggies. This restaurant would have been considered one of the best in the city back on the 70s, when expectations were low, and American cuisine consisted of meat and potatoes. However, the food world has moved on and I, for one, do not really want to revisit those days. If I lived in the neighborhood, and craved correctly cooked fish and a grocery store wine list, I might frequent sometime. But I don't, and I also can't in all fairness give it more than 3 stars when compared to it's peer group of over $50pp eateries. Walkers Point contains 7 restaurants that cost the same and are better in almost every way.

This is such a wonderful hidden establishment out in Brown Deer. Luckily, I was recently stationed at the nearby Marriott... I seated myself at the bar and was immediately greeted with a food menu and a specials menu. Everything sounded mouthwatering and delicious (scallops in brown butter?!). The gentleman at the bar was amazing and provided several recommendations until I finally settled a glass of riesling, the parmesan calamari and the cajun halibut cheeks. - Riesling: I'm no wine connoisseur, but the wine was delicate and sweet. A great riesling. - Parmesan Calamari: The calamari itself was pounded and cooked perfectly. It was chewy without being rubbery. The parmesan coating proved to be a little heavy for me, but it was still delicious. - Side Salad: Okay, so this wasn't really something that I ordered, but I have to rave about the house made Mango Lime Vinaigrette. It was phenomenal! - Cajun Halibut Cheeks: The halibut cheeks were perfectly flaky and the seasoning was great with a great kick. The service was warm and attentive. I will definitely be back!

I was delighted River Lane adapted the seared ahi tuna appetizer to an entree sized portion for my dinner. It was delicious! My family had dinner here last night and we were all reminded of how enjoyable River Lane still is for dinner. The service was professional, attentive but unintrusive. And there was something crave-worthy for everyone from my grandma to me. The atmosphere seems a bit dated, so don't be surprised by a plastic menu. However the food quality and wine list more than compensate for a supper club vibe.

The seafood is flown in fresh daily. Pounded calamari and parmesan is literally my favorite anywhere. Rare Ahi tuna with lemon Beurre Blanc was our second appetizer. Fabulous! He had the black angus tenderloin filet topped with bleu cheese. I enjoyed sea scallops with cajun cream sauce and spinach. The service is impecable. I enjoy that you can come here dressed up before a show or casual just to enjoy a delicous meal.

If I could draw a picture in your mind of a charming, warm place that oozes top service and backed with the best seafood in the area I would have to say River Lane Inn is THE restaurant. I have dined here a dozen times and have never been disappointed. First, it's expensive. One can typically drop an easy $150-$200 for two considering wine, apps, entrees, and dessert. I'm not complaining at all here because you'll find quality here. Their pounded calamari coated in warm, gooey parmesan is un-honking-believable. I mean I could eat ten pounds of this stuff and not get enough. My favorite entree to-date is the perfectly cooked salmon on a hot cedar plank board with horseradish sauce, garlic mashed potatoes, corn, asparagus, and broccoli. I have never had salmon cooked to the point of it melting in my mouth. I just couldn't get enough. I wrapped up the night with creme brûlée and a cappuccino. Service was incredible (as always) and the hostess really goes out of the way to make you feel special. Thanks, Jim, for running a super awesome restaurant where you are literally transported through all five senses.

Came here with my wife and aunt. We all enjoyed our entrees. The scallops with andouille sausages were rich and quite tasty. The Jambalaya was also quite tasty according to everyone. Their Parmesan calamari steak appetizer was unique and flavorful. My wife and aunt said the shrimp pasta dish was good.... I found it a bit lacking in flavor....but they outvote me. The only thing I would recommend is for them to put as much effort into their salads as the other menu items. Overall, very good.

I've been to the River Lane Inn a few times now, and it is certainly a Brown Deer gem. In fact, I'd argue it's a gem for the greater Milwaukee area. My friend and I were going to head out for a fish fry, her treat as a belated birthday gift (holla!) and she suggested River Lane Inn. Well okay there, Fancy Pants. If you insist! This place is really about the fish and seafood, and so that is precisely what we did. I had the potato crusted haddock, which was quite nice in a briny caper sauce, and came with steamed vegetables and cole slaw. My friend had the cajun Halibut cheeks which I had once before, and they were delicious as well. The ambiance was nice, as always, the crowd a little older and a little supper clubby but in a northshore way, and we had a really nice evening that was upscale without being pretentious. If you are looking to try a place that is on the nicer side and you like fish/seafood options, this is definitely worth a visit.

Cajun halibut cheeks- 10/10 Raw oysters- 10/10 Seared scallops w/ tomato butter- 10/10 Wine list- 10/10 Beers- 7/10 (just due to lack of variety. What they do have is a 10.) Service- 10/10 Menu overall- 9/10 This little place can cook their ass off. The atmosphere is cozy and the attitude is warm. I found them to be very knowledgable of their craft and generous with their hospitality. As a traveler this is what I look for on the road.

River Lane Inn is a long-established gem that locals love. If you're not from around here (or are too young to know the score) you'd probably never run across it. It's not a chic new place that Yelpers name-drop to impress. You're not going to gush about a Beard Award winning chef in the kitchen. It's closer to a city-bound version of a Wisconsin supper club. Anyways, you can see this old place used to be tucked away in a quaint lane, though now strip malls have sprouted up around it like weeds. I made it here on a slow weekday and have nothing but compliments. The rolls and appetizers were great, the halibut and trout were impeccable, and nothing felt skimped. For a restaurant of this caliber I sensed that the waitstaff was younger than I'd expect, they were utterly professional. My sole gripe is one that I could say about every old establishment in the state: the salad was a joke. It's like restaurateurs are not aware of leafy greens other than iceberg lettuce, or of vegetables beyond the grape tomato. But it's a quibble that I've come to expect here. I'm coming back for my next family celebration. River Lane Inn is a sincere, classy old joint with character and great food.

3.5 stars really. I can't quite make up my mind about this place. I was craving some seafood on a Saturday and came across this place which is relatively close to where I live so it was a natural choice. I took a look at the menu and they seemed to really have some interesting options and I was even more excited. We were seated immediately around 7:30 on a Saturday and I immediately noticed that we were the youngest couple in the place. I think their usual clientele is retired or pretty close to retired. The service was on point. Our waitress brought our drinks out right away and was there when we needed her, absent when we didn't. They had probably 10 specials which I like to see with seafood places. We ordered the calamari first because it was highly recommended by other yelpers and they were right on. It's not your usual pieces of calamari, rather one huge piece of calamari that's been breaded and fried. It cuts like butter and perfect with just a hint of lemon on top. On to the entrees - I got the salmon with horseradish sauce. The salmon was done pretty close to perfect. The horseradish sauce had almost no horseradish flavor. My real problem is with the sides. They were so uninspired. My entree came with a glob of garlic mashed potatoes and some precut steamed vegetables with no seasoning. My husband had grouper that was very good but also accompanied by a scoop of unseasoned rice and veg. I'm just confused I guess. There is clearly a lot of thought put into the protein - but the sides are just an afterthought. Now - if this was a more moderate restaurant, I wouldn't really care as much. But our bill was almost $90 pre tip for an appetizer, two entrees, dessert and two cheap drinks. I expect more when I get in that price range I guess. Not sure if I'll be back...
