Wow that is one strong margarita. Good and strong. The tamalies were super moist and excellent. I had the spicy salmon the fish was cooked perfectly and left to soak up the spicy concoction of peppers and onions, tomatoes and such layered on top. The fresh avacados on the side were a welcome sight. The service was attentive and warm and bustling and If authentic doesn't offend anyone I will add that to. As always this was the recommendation of the server (minus the tamalies). It was a welcome change to have the option of corn tortillas! Fried ice cream was ok. A bit pricey for me but I ordered way more than I could eat.

Stuck in the culinary wasteland that is the Milwaukee suburbs, I went here with the girlfriend because we were starving and what a mistake, this has to be some of the worst food we've ever eaten. Everything on our plates looked and tasted like it came from a can, and was WAY overpriced. Bland, flavorless salsa. Enchiladas filled with overcooked, grey spinach from a can, covered in velveeta cheese sauce from a can that formed a "film" on top. Gross. "Chile verde" was a joke... this dish is supposed to be made with slow-cooked pork shoulder, and when you have it made by someone who knows what they're doing, the meat is fork-tender in a flavorful tomatillo sauce. But not at La Chimenea, here they plopped some dry, overcooked chunks of cardboard-flavored dogfood on a plate and dumped a jar of what was obviously store-bought salsa verde on top, like that cheap crap that comes from the can in the Mexican section of the cheap grocery store. Sad. Wouldn't even pass as horse food. Whoever is in charge of this kitchen should probably pursue a different career path. The worst part was it was really expensive, entrees were between $10-$13 for some microwaved food dumped out of a can. Everything was really bland, and the prominent use of canned products meant you could really taste the sodium. We didn't even finish half of this crappy food, and felt pretty disgusting afterwards. Even as far as Americanized Mexican food goes, this place is the bottom of the barrel. We were totally pissed off, this place ruined our evening. Service was good, but I don't undesrtand how anyone in good conscience can serve this sad, pathetic excuse for Mexican cooking. We would have been better off going to Taco Bell or Chili's or some crap like that, I'm not joking, those would have been worlds better. Seriously, if this is good to you then your standards are pretty fucking low. Eating here made me want to spray vomit all over.

Food was decent. Service and environment were good. Chips were stale. Queso and salsa were excellent. I would recommend!

I've been here a couple dozen times and it is pretty decent mexican food, have always had prompt and great service. The menu is large and has the typical mexican offerings as well as a few other less known items, the Tacos al Pasteur is excellent as well as the mole dishes offer some excellent spice. All in all an excellent place for mexican for a more rural area without having to go all the way into Milwaukee.

I have been here twice. Food was a bit bland. Service was pretty slow and the waiter was not very polite the second trip. They only had house frozen margaritas... I could not get anything good (patron, cuervo) frozen... I would pass on this one.

One of the better Mexican places on this side of town!

We went last night on a groupon with another couple that also had a groupon. It was a 45 min wait, which didn't bother us as we had time to visit with our friends. We got sodas at the bar and waited outside. The overall atmosphere was average. The place was packed so when we sat down we advised our server that we both had a groupon and to please put on orders on separate checks. She told us she couldn't do two checks and we could only use one groupon and would have to sit at separate tables. We are not new to using these coupons and have never had a business force us to split tables especially if we were doing separate checks. We ended up sitting next to our friends but we had a big concrete pillar between us so my husband could only visit with her husband and I could only visit with my girlfriend. I couldn't understand the sense behind that...taking a needed table away, splitting up a date, making the server run around more, and we spent the same whether we sat together or not. The food was ok...I am from Texas so I know what good Mexican is supposed to taste like...this was good for area. We got fajitas, can't screw those up to much. When we got our bill our waitress had charged us again for the sodas we had bought at the bar. We figured just oversight and pointed out to her. She said the bar was separate and that it was policy to charge twice. I told her that was ridiculous and we wouldn't be coming back. She said OK. My husband said he would talk to manager and either get removed or she just wouldn't get tipped. The manager was quick to correct and reimbursed the over charge and apologized. Hindsight we should have talked to him about table. Overall food was fine, service awful...probably wont ever go back. Too many other good places to go with average food. Service is a huge deal for me. I have kids at home and when I get a chance to go out I expect to be treated well.

I should have known by the shiny new building that I would be entering a modern day Chi-Chi's. If it had not been for an improvised stop for lunch before a basketball tournament, we would have chosen another venue. Upon entering a nearly empty front dining and bar area--save for 2 men seated at a high-top--the host needed " two minutes to set up our table." It took far longer than that, and they only had to put together two tables. When we got to our table, they had it set with waters and two baskets of chips and salsa. That should have waited until we were seated. The server could have greeted us as he placed those items. The menu options were typical, but it was nice to have corn tortillas offered with our chicken fajitas. Those were acceptable, minus the slightly overdone and tough chicken breast pieces. The side of semi-refried beans and rice were literally tossed in front of us, and were bland, to say the most. My fellow diners chose a "tasteless" duo of beef burritos smothered in cheese; chicken chimichanga with a chicken enchilada, sides of rice and beans...smothered in cheese; seafood enchiladas with a side of rice and beans, all smothered in cheese. Do you see a pattern forming? Had it not been for the automatic gratuity for our group of 6, the tip amount would have been much less. Thank goodness the host does not receive a tip for his greeting ability, because he could not even look up from whatever he was viewing to bid us "Good day." I will remember that it is the least assuming visage that usually produces the most authentic and memorable food. No juzgar por las apariencias (Don't judge a book by its cover.).

Overall, "I'm a fan" of La Chimenea sums it up. The food overall is pretty good but can be hit-or-miss. I had some spinach enchiladas once that I found to be downright disappointing (the "tomatillo cheese sauce" was bland and looked and tasted just like melted Velveeta), but the Tacos Al Pastor and the steak-and-chorizo tacos are excellent!!! Dishes like chimichangas, tostadads, burritos are fine... they very effectively satisfy the craving for Mexican food and are relatively tasty, but at the same time, they are nothing to write home about. Service at La Chimenea is consistently good-- friendly and quick. Lunch specials are excellent. You can get a full entree w/ rice and beans and a big fountain drink or lemonade w/ a free refill for $7.50-- you really can't beat that, especially not for the quantity of food and lots of options (including those yummy pastor tacos!). The outdoor deck doesn't have much of a view, but it's still really nice and we definitely enjoy eating out there in the summer. There aren't too many good al-fresco dining options in Germantown, so that alone makes La Chimenea a gem. Margaritas are POTENT! They clearly are mass-produced using a mix, but you will certainly get a buzz! I recommend not ordering more than one unless you've got a designated driver. :) They also have some good happy hour drink specials daily in the bar. Check the local Coupon Clipper for coupons as they frequently advertise there.

Management doesn't care when patrons bring up issues about bad food or service. Went there earlier this month and the food was bland and tasted poor. Their new menu is horrible, and they increased their prices for the poor quality bland tasting food they serve, and they now charge extra for more chips. I wrote about the bad experience on their comment card and then wrote a letter to their manager, no response, and no acknowledgment. I didn't ask for anything, no free meal or credit on my charge card; however, any response that they even care about their product and service would have been nice. I don't see any reason to ever go back to this place. "Authentic Mexican" in Germantown, not so much.

Nice patio seating. Food is pretty good. One margarita is all you need!

This place used to be good, but gets worse with each visit. Service was OK, I am talking about the food. If you want Mexican food go somewhere else.

  • Jeremy G.

This is a bit more than I feel the restaurant deserves... But the food is for the most part consistent and fairly fast. The margaritas are always strong and they have a regular coupon offer in the clipper. Don't expect to be wowed with the most amazing Spanish/Mexican cuisine though.

  • S B.

This restaurant does not have authentic Mexican or probably anything made from scratch. I've ate here on several occasions because someone had a groupon or a coupon, but I know better now than to go back again. Twice my bill has been wrong and the waiters were not quick to fix the error.

    (1)
  • Tomas G.

People who think this is authentic have never had Mexican food. This place is essentially a sit down Taco Bell. Nothing is made by hand or from scratch or even utilizes the right techniques. Everytime I come here I'm disappointed because I want to like it, the place is always packed and then I look down at my food and realize why I hate this place. The service and drinks are always fine, always a bit of a wait but the food is terrible- people who eat here dont blend other cultures or arent probably even open minded enough to truly try it. I doubt the owners are even Mexican.

  • Matt H.

Nothing special, food is decent. Came here with the girlfriend because we had a coupon from an entertainment book or something. Once seated I noticed that either the chairs were too high or the table was too low. It was kinda weird and bothered me. The table was small in a "kids table for Christmas dinner at Grandma's" type way. I don't know, the setup wasn't working for me, maybe I'm just weird. The food was adequate, wasn't bad. The meat was cooked well so that was a plus. I just feel like there's better options out there. Su Casa in Menomonee Falls is a bit better in my opinion. Flip of the coin if you want to try La Chimenea though.

I live in San Diego, so it's my hobby to know good Mexican food. The way you tell first is by the rice and beans, very good. I ordered the fajitas and found everything authentic and tasty. Nice artwork and overall atmosphere. A little slow on the service but I can overlook then need to feel important. I would definitely return if I am in the area again. I also ordered a Margarita and could actually tell that it had tequila in it. Most places make it weak, but this is one of the best margaritas I have had. Muchas Gracias Para todo! Oh and by the way, if you don't know Mexican food, don't bother commenting about it, Loco gringos! Lol

    (5)
  • Jen H.

Rude bartender. Came in alone for quick takeout and to use balance of expired Groupon. Was greeted with attitude after a long day - nothing a (is there even alcohol in here?) drink couldn't fix. And when I went to use my Groupon balance, I had to wait to have bill adjusted because they wouldn't give me happy hour price on my "cocktail." All fine, til I bit into my greasy, mushy, super salty chicken burrito. Wouldn't go back. Do not recommend. :-/

  • Jack R.

The service is really good. Fast, friendly, and very enjoyable. The drinks are very good if you like very strong margaritas. The food is sub par. I don't like Mexican food for the most part, so the comments about the Mexican food are from my wife, who does. The rice tasted like it was made in bulk in the morning and by dinner it tasted stale. The tacos were ok, but definitely better at other Mexican places. I had the fish fry. I don't expect fish fries and hamburgers to be amazing at a Mexican place, but this was exceptionally bad. The first piece was really good and I was pleasantly surprised. The rest tasted old and fishy and the fries were underdone. The chips they serve are not salted and not fresh. Over all. Not worth it. The only thing that made the experience pleasant was the staff.

  • Bail T.

Wow, what happened?!? Haven't been here in a few years, and I have to say that this seemed like a completely different restaurant then it was back then. The food was terrible. The chips and taco shells tasted stale, the food had no flavor....just can't believe this is the same place that used to be so good. It's too bad.

    (1)
  • Michael S.

The service was very good. Friendly, attentive and fast. Food was just average. It had that fast food kind of quality. I would probably go back again if I was in the area.

  • Mark P.

Mmmm, Fajita's!!! The only way they can improve is by serving them with fresh tortillas made in-house. Best fajita's I've had up here in the North. They are average compared to what I get in Texas or California. I've had everything from Tacos, Chimichanga's, Enchilada's & Tamale's. All are good. But, I prefer the fajita's with Margarita's. I limit myself to 1 pitcher of Margarita's per visit, they kick my ass! The Chips and Salsa are nothing special and not unlimited. I do recommend getting a side of their homemade guacamole. Great place to visit during the warmer months, the outside deck is beautiful. Service is always fast & friendly. The restaurant gets pretty busy during peak hours. So, expect a wait if you arrive around lunch or dinner. The dining rooms & bar always look clean & organized, I haven't been able to check out the kitchen. It seems to be well hidden.

This used to be a really great restaurant when it first opened up maybe 10 years ago. Awesome, authentic tamales, moles, camarones a la Diabla, sopes, heck for that matter tortillas! Unfortunately it has now become like EVERY other restaurant in Washington and northern Waukesha counties. Industrialized, pre-packaged and prepared SYSCO crap!!! Obviously the mentality prevails in this area that more is better and never mind that it is pig slop as long as my plate is overflowing. Come on, seriously, you can't send an employee down to El Rey several times a week for fresh produce and authentic ingredients? The pico de gallo I had last night was made with whiteish, slightly pink tomatoes, serranos that had seen better days, and absolutely no cilantro. (Pretty sure made in industrialized vats by the almighty SYSCO!) The salsa that was served with the chips at the table would definitely benefit with the addition of salt, but it had a nice heat and overall flavor. I realize making tortillas and frijoles de olla takes a slight bit of an effort, but really, start with the basics of preparing your own food and not trying to shortcut everything thinking it is cheaper and your restaurant may have a chance. Really wish this restaurant had not succumbed to the idiotic local mentality that mounds of cheese make for an "authentic" experience. The stars are because I really enjoy the outdoor patio here and the margaritas aren't too shabby. Would really like to have some tasty and authentic antojitos with my cocktails though! And I will have to say the servers here are really awesome! Joel and Antonio in particular!

Love this restaurant!! Our favorite go-to for margaritas and food after work. Their strawberry margaritas are good (strong), and I love the enchiladas!! They also offer Groupons periodically online.

Good food, awesome lunch specials what more could you ask for. My favorite is # 29 chicken enchilada.

  • David S.

I would give it zero stars if I could. We walked in. We were greeted. Nobody came to take our order, despite A member of management coming over to say hello. Another Group came in, sat beside us, and was served right away. No one came so after a while we left without eating. Several years ago I was here and the food was good. The service is certainly lousy now. Furthermore, A Mexican restaurant without tamales?! Very bad.

This place is a pretty "standard" Mexican restaurant. It's close to my house so a eat here maybe once a year. Last night I ordered a house special. It was called the steak ranchero. I was served enough steak to fill one of the four tortillas the dish came with. Sad thing is it was really good. For $16.99 I expect way more. Very disappointed.

  • Berenice L.

The building is deceiving. We had a chile relleno and that was gross. They don't make them the way they should. They wrapped the pepper in a egg omelette basically. Changes the taste. Not what you expect. My spinach enchiladas were bad as well. They use frozen spinach and I could taste the freezer. Our waitress didn't smile even once. The rice and beans were good. That was about the only good thing. Oh and the bathrooms were dirty. Not impressed at all.

I come here about once year because my sister lives in the area and she likes the place. I on the other hand wouldn't jump on going here. But I got a Groupon. So thought It was a good chance to give another chance. Not horrible. I just hate it when a restaurant is not consistent to entrees. First time a came here i got their La Chimenea Salad. Basicly fajita mix on a bed of greens with chunks of mango and a mango dressing. Mighty tasty. But the last two time the filling has been bland and greens seem to come out of a bag. The Chips and Salsa is nothing special and not unlimited. But I would recommend getting a side of their homemade guacamole. This last time I got the Pealla. Some of the seafood and meats in it were over cooked and it needed something more. So I had to add some hot sauce for an extra pizazzs. Dislike it when you have to add something thats not to be in it because it didn't come out tasty great from the kitchen. But did come out piping hot. Tasted my sister's Chicken Mole. Tender chicken and flavorful mole. Service has always been attentive. Sometimes with two working your table making sure no drinks are empty and checking up. Hope your dices roll right each time thou.

  • Jenni P.

The margaritas are pretty good, although I've certainly had better. The quesadillas are out of this world - very cheesy (perfect for a WI girl like myself!) and the chicken was very moist. The prices are a little high here though, so that's another down side.

    (3)
  • Steve D.

Ordered 6 carry out dinners. Asked them to mark each one. They didn't. The food was barely warm and tasteless. Just a bunch of mush.

  • Marcia C.

The food is average, but the desire to keep customers is ABSENT. We first used a Groupon here and were told that it wasn't accepted for happy hour drinks so we paid cash for the happy hour drinks and then ordered food and were told that since we paid happy hour prices (in cash) for drinks that we couldn't use the Groupon for the food. Later we purchased Amazon Local coupons for this restaurant and were told that we couldn't use the coupon for drinks, even at the full price. We were required to order food too. We asked for a sopapilla to go ($3.99) but were told that those didn't qualify either so we ordered beans and rice ($1.99) to go and that was OK. Strange!! This place uses every excuse to avoid honoring Groupons or Amazon Local promotions. Don't go there!!! The average food isn't worth it, the patio is on the parking lot, and the friendliness is OUT the window!

I went here with two friends for lunch one crowded Friday afternoon, I took it as a good sign. One of the folks in our party had downloaded a coupon for our visit that day from an online coupon publisher. As we walked in we noticed that they weren't going to honor the coupon so we asked our server about it. When we brought it up, he became argumentative with us and downright rude to our group. Told us that the membership online coupon was horrible and they were really unhappy about being a vendor with them and if we wanted to complain about them not taking the coupon, we would need to call the company about the issue, not discuss with restaurant management. The fact of the matter is we would have been happy to just order off the menu and pay full price for our meals, but the treatment we received by the server as well as the host was ridiculous. We were hungry and ended up leaving without ordering and vowed NEVER to return. A bummer since all of us were hungry for some good Mexican fare. My review is based solely on the service we received, which was deplorable. I wish I could comment on the food quality, but we didn't stay long enough to eat there. Unless you are a glutton for punishment or enjoy poor service. AVOID.

It was a Tuesday night and decided to take my family out for a Mexican dinner after a long day at work. We arrived, 6 of us total with two children under 10 yrs old...So our waiter greeted us at our table, seemed pleasant but please people i find it so disgusting when a rather Large waiter that's bald, has sweat dripping down his head as he takes our order, not to mention when he's delivering the food to the table!! Food has NO flavor and is overpriced!! Server takes our drink order, (kids ordered a soda) and adults a margarita. Then our food order. Kids order off kids menu which includes a soda....We get the bill and he added the soda on 5 extra dollars. I mentioned to him that the kids food came with a soda. He replies "well i didn't know they were going to order from kids menu" HE NEVER ASKED instead he brought them each a soda bigger then there head!! DUH!! if they do that to all customers they make a ton of extra money...People never really check the bills...+ I can NEVER understand why restaurants feel they can add 20% tip on a check!! I think it should be up to the customer if they feel the server deserves a tip at all much less a 20% tip!! I will NEVER go back to that racket!!! YUCK!! keep driving and eat somewhere else...in fact much better off making tacos at home!!!

    (1)
  • Josh B.

It's a good place to start the night off with friends or grabbing a good lunch. Anything else feels overpriced. Hang in there for a large selection of margaritas if you can handle them.

  • Jim D.

I would love to say that this is a great place, but it really is not. The place is clean and I have found the servers to be friendly and quick but the food is downright poor. I honestly think I get better flavor and ingredients from Q'doba or Chipotle. They do a brisk business and it is a fun place to go, but do not go expecting flavorful or even freshly prepared food. I am hopeful that at some point the people who run this place will pay the same attention to fresh ingredients and good tasting freshly prepared food that they paid to the nice interior and good service. Just a note: We have never had trouble getting outdoor seating and we have sat out and just had drinks and appetizers.

There aren't too many options in the Germantown area, especially for South of the border cuisine. When I arrived the place was packed with people waiting for a table, and the parking lot was full. Good signs #1 and #2. It took about 8 minutes to be greeted by a roaming hostess. The wait was estimated to be 20 minutes. I opted for the bar as I was dining alone. Upon securing a table, the bartender let me know, quite matter of factly, that she wouldn't have the time and that she was too busy to make it out to service my table. Uh oh...bad signs are now outweighing my initial impression. I went back to resign myself to the 20 minute wait. And it was perfectly timed. If it hadn't been pouring outside I would have left in a heartbeat. I was seated and my waiter was Joel. He was a champ and turned my negative experience around with his quick service and attentiveness. My food was as good as any run of the mill mexican joint. Nothing above average in any way. I think my dinner salad was the highlight of the meal...if thatvtells you anything. Salsa was good with a spicy bite. I guess when you have no options for great southwest, TexMex, or authentic Mexican cuisine, La Chimenea will do. I added a photo of three empty tables in the bar area. You know..the one where the bartender couldn't handle all the paying patrons.

Food here was decent enough and I like that they have some more upscale entrees rather than your typical mexican fare. Wait staff was not the friendliest and having to pay for chips and salsa does not seem right. Did not order drinks so not sure how the margis go. We sat on the patio and this was fine till it got dark out. The patio lighting could use some serious work. Why have this nice outdoor dining deck with next to no lights?

If you want real Mexican food go to 6th and National (Bring your gun ) This place has Mexican American food. Not many people can eat real Mexican food Way too HOT. The food is good here. Great drinks and a nice atmosphere.

After searching like crazy for a decent Mexican restaurant in Washington County, we found La Chimenea on Mequon Rd. in Germantown several years ago. First of all, it looks like a fairly new, attractive building and it always looks clean. The food itself is very decent. The portion sizes are fine. Also, the wait staff is very quick to bring your meals to your table! Plus, they have a fairly large private room for private parties and events like wedding receptions, retirement or graduation parties. One more thing: The salsa is tasty as well. I've tried La Chimenea many times and will continue to go there. UPDATE (7-31-2013): What happened?! Food tastes dried out and marginal now. I am now reluctant to go there. Not happy about this. Gave it two stars instead of my original four.

I like this place. Food is pretty good and they have a group deal that comes with a bunch of entrees, appetizers, and a pitcher of margaritas. The margaritas can be strong so be careful!

Been here a number of times over the past several years - not sure why I haven't written a review until now. Dined here with my wife several nights ago - restaurant was moderately busy. They have an outdoor patio where you can dine or drink Margarita's on, but we dined indoors due to the heat. Chips and salsa just like ever other Mex restaurant, but their salsa was fresh and spicy. The first basket of chips and salsa is free but the second basket of chips and salsa will cost you $2 (actually very smart from their perspective). Food is average Mexican fare but I have always had very good service. This evening were were promptly seated and ordered drinks which appeared quite quickly. What was remarkable was that our food was delivered to us in approximately 5 minutes after ordering - possibly the quickest food I have ever had (other than a fast food restaurant). We used one of the many coupons that La Chimenea has and saved $7 so overall I was quite pleased. Dinner for 2, drinks, and an 18% tip for $30! Food is 3 stars (average) but service is fast - 5 stars.

Pretty decent food for Germantown. La Chimenea was great with taking reservations for a busy Friday night before Christmas. We were seated promptly, and were treated very well by our waiter. The portions are huge, and the flavours were pretty good. Must haves include: Mole sauce - very strong chocolate flavor Chile Verde sauce - extremely tasty I would definitely go back. Overall, a very positive experience here.

Decent Mexican on this side of town (Germantown/Mequon). Outdoor deck is nice in warmer weather, but the view is the parking lot. Yes, the bar is mostly margarita machines but they stick 2 tequila bottles worth of booze in them. The "blue" one is the strongest of the bunch. From what I hear, it's because the locals requested stronger drinks. Gotta love Wisconsin!

  • Cyndi O.

La Chimnea has a beautiful patio however they do not let you sit there. We were treated so rudely when we went - were told we were the next in line for outdoor seating yet they sat 2 tables before us. We ordered drinks, appetizer and meals and when we were done they slapped the bill in front of us (no offer for additional cocktails or dessert). Once paid we were told we had to vacate the table. They will not let you sit out there just for cocktails either. I live in Germantown and have no desire to go back!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
