Ok so lets start by saying the owner, at least I think its the owner, isn't exactly the best greeter and not personable at all! I have been in multiple times, sometimes multiple days in a row and the owner still didn't remember be or if he did he chose not to acknowledge that I had been in multiple times! But you know I can get past that because the food is really good!! I have had many of the rolls here and I must say they have all been pretty good. This particular time I went (the pictures I posted) I had gone with the mars roll and ram y un soup. The one thing I like about Flying Fish is how tight the rolls are and how fresh the fish is. I would say I am an avid sushi eater, from making my own to trying multiple different sushi places. I have had many rolls that the roll does no stay together and by the time you are done with your roll, you have half the rice in your shoyu tray! So its nice to have a place that can keep their roll together. Nothing is ever going to compare to fresh ahi caught and fileted right there on the spot but I would say this place is as close to fresh as possible. Mars roll has tuna on it and am a big fan! I have also tried the white Christmas roll, which features white tuna; must say I am a big fan. In fact I usually get that roll every time I go in. Finally, for all you ramen lovers out there, the ram y un soup is really good! Growing up on the Hawaiian dish saimen, this spicy ramen hits home. It includes chicken, pork, steak, and veggies in the soup. The added the ingredients, instead of just ramen and broth, takes this dish over the top. I do not know if they use their own broth but in my opinion the broth is what makes a soup and theirs is amazing! it has a perfect spice to it! So besides the pushy owner and him not remembering anyone that comes in, the food is amazing! Definitely well worth your money! Highly recommended!

    1. Expensive. For the same price you can get something better at other place. 2. Unprofessional customer service. The Korean man works there (whom I think is also the owner) is not very good what he does. 3. Sushi and appetizer are delicious. If you come here to only have chicken teriyaki, yakisoba, or general menu where every teriyaki restaurant has, I don't recommend this place. But you gotta try out their sushi and appetizer and small entries.

My husband and I battled the rain and decided to do a mini celebration on the day he proposed to me (we are so gushy). Anywho, after being turned away from my favorite spot (he had no rice ready) we drove all the way to Tacoma for sushi. Well well, we could have went to H-Mart and went back home and made our own. i ordered the spicy tuna handr oll. My husband got the salmon hand roll and we shared the veggie tempura, Vegas roll and the Ruby roll. All looked good on paper but not so much in the mouth. My husband was already not happy because he asked for a side of eel sauce and the owner said no that is not how you eat it and we put it on top of the roll. I knew at that moment, my husband was not going to really like much. The hand rolls were tasty but the sushi rolls were just ok. I am not a fan of eel sauce so the Vegas Roll was way too sweet. The ruby roll just didn't do it for me either. The tempura was decent but not enough to make me go back. The owner is a little pushy and I can see where after a while he is a little much. I mean how can you tell us that we should hurry up and eat our hand roll before our sushi roll? Isn't that our business? Oh and he charged us an extra $1 for my husband's eel sauce. Tsk tsk.

I went to Flying Fish for the first time yesterday with a friend. The woman who served us was very kind and friendly. The sushi was also delicious! I suggest the Volcano roll and the Tacoma roll!

How can u tell me how 2 eat sushi or wat order I should eat it as a customer, when ur sushi isn't even traditional 2 begin with? I wanted a side of unagi (eel) sauce n the owner who took our order said, "No, No, No, this is on top of sushi, ur roll that will come".. yes, I know it is on top, but I want a side as well! Sushi 101: real sushi is simple w/out all these sauces as mentioned by Real Japanese Sushi Chef Kazu of Sushi Kuine over in Kent (I cite him as source). As he mentioned by flipping thru a fancy sushi picture calendar that was full of sauced-out non-traditional rolls, he said, "u c all these sauces on top of sushi, all these avocados, imitation crab.. all these r Korean style!" I bust out laughing each time I think about it! Simply, real sushi is enjoyed by simply rubbing in wasabi in2 ur sushi n having a slice of fresh fish on top of it. Just simple. Plain simple. But when I want non-traditional, I can too, but don't tell me how 2 eat it b/c it is already non-traditional 2 start out with! So, getting in2 the review.. my wife n I shared a large hot sake, veggie tempura, Vegas Roll, Ruby Roll n we each had a hand roll (I had the salmon n she had a spicy tuna one) b4 the rolls came, the owner was like, "u have 2 eat all the appetizers b4 the rolls come!" oooooooooooookkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk............!!!!!!!! The hot sake was good, warmed up the soul, was 1 of the few bright spots. The veggie tempura was horrible; I did not like how it tasted; it tasted 2 fried n not enough lightness as real tempura is n the pieces of vegetables were dry n just a small cup of tempura dip came w/ it.. lo good (no good, Chinese accent). The hand roll was the best thing that came, fresh n simple goodness n yes, I dipped in unagi sauce.. come get me!.. the Vegas roll didn't have much in it, just str8 sauce, a little imitation crab, can't even taste any meat or filling; meh!.. the Ruby Roll was decent, but if the fish wasn't so chewy, it would have been good. It would have been a "2", but the owner is pretty entertaining, so I give them a "3"! positives that I took out of this place r: (1) the hand rolls, (2) hot sake, (3) owner n (4) the piece of cookies n cream kiss

This is our go to sushi place. I think the food is great and I cannot complain about the prices. My only problem is that service can be poor if it is very busy. The owner is usually running the whole show, so it can be hectic and a long wait if crowded. My husband and I usually pick up our food or dine in when it isn't busy.

  • Lucy J.

Really good sushi and lo-and-behold I just found out they've had ramen on their menu the whole time and I've missed it. Not anymore! Teriyaki is pretty good too, not really better than anywhere else, but they have a salmon option which most places don't. They also serve beer and wine. My kids love this place- they especially like the California rolls and the chicken teriyaki. One order will feed two of them with leftovers.

  • Arlynn M.

I had a great lunch here today, staff was friendly and the service was prompt. I ate the California Roll and White Christmas Roll, both fresh and tasty. One problem..... The hallway to the bathroom, the curtain that covered the door, the bathroom door (inside and out) handle area looked like it had not been cleaned since they moved in. Gross!

So I was in the tacoma area and one of my employees told me try this place out for a quick lunch. I got the chicken yakisoba and it was awesome. Nice huge portion with fresh vegtables and not to mention mushrooms. It was cooked perfect and the yakisoba sauce was perfect. The decor inside was perfect and they even had a little room where you take off your shoes and do hotpot. Will be back!

I live around the corner from this little Gem, doesn't look like much but the food is some of the best sushi and Japanese cooking you'll find in the Area. I always suggest this place to friends who want fresh traditional Sushi Rolls. I agree the owner is a little rude abrasive if you eat in, not a teddy bear but even so the food merits a clear 5 stars. Spicy Tuna and Rainbow Roll is delicious, if you don't like raw fish try the 911 Roll.

  • Markiss C.

Love everything about the place but the owners pushy attitude. I don't say much but enough is enough. I would easily give this place a 5 if it wasn't for him. Not a very kid friendly or human friendly atmosphere. Your best bet is to just call orders in as there's a capacity for roughly ONE!

  • David E.

Great Sushi the Bento Box gives the most bang for your buck. So much food it will take you two days to eat it all.

Waitress is very rude and mean. She's very dirty didn't want to eat my food when I received it.

Been coming to Tacoma on business for the last eight years and finally stopped in. I am so glad I did, the chicken teriyaki is amazing. Came back for round two and did not disappoint! Service could be improved though

This place is incredible. Excellent sushi beautifully presented. The service was prompt and delightful. The price was definitely a value find!!

First time here and I was pleasantly surprised. The atmosphere is clean and warm, albeit small. Service was quick and the food delicious. Prices were very reasonable. I'll definitely be back! Happy I found this place.

Terrible Service. Went to this restaurant with my mom, and seven year old daughter. After waiting 15 minutes to order, we were asked to take our order to go (which wasn't our intention), because we only ordered a 14.99 bento box. He told us we were taking up too much space at the table of 4, because he could potentially make more money by seating people that were not sharing.

Inconsistent food. Spicy chicken is never the same and the sweet and sour chicken is not very saucy. Only one around open on Sundays, though.

One of the best little lunch spots around the area! They make very delicious dishes, I've tried a few different ones to make sure and I was never disappointed. The yakisoba noodles are so fresh and they mix it with a very good sauce. I love the sushi although it is a little pricy in my opinion, but definitely worth it. My favorite was the Korean ribs with rice. Very tasty. The only bad thing I have to say about this place is it is very small. I would love to take some friends out, but there is not very much room to sit - the tables are little and crowded. This is definitely a place I love to order food to go though so I've figured my way around that issue. Definitely recommend for anyone in the area looking for great food.

  • Lindsey H.

I come here often, and i love it Everytime!! Tastes so fresh and i love the extra sauce on the sushi. More on the expensive side, but oh so worth it. Very small inside, not much seating but never was busy when I've gone except one time but i think it was a holiday and the wait was over an hour!! Its very quaint, and the owners (i assume because they are always there) are super nice and are fast!

  • FranklyHonest H.

Definitely ate like a pig here! 4 of us stuffed our faces with sushi, sushi, and more sushi! We came on a Saturday mid-afternoon, place was busy but we got a table right away next to the window. Sunshine was great, facility spotless. Our order was huge (we were starving!) and it came super fast! Not one bite was left. The waitress was friendly. We also enjoyed using the silver chopsticks vs the usual wood-type....well....I was too hungry to manipulate chopsticks! So I forego the chopsticks and used my fork! As picky eaters go, this place really hit the spot. I took pictures of our plates, but for some reason not able to load onto Yelp.

  • Jamie S.

Ate here on many occasions for the great deal on teriyaki chicken. male waiter is very rude and I've witnessed him rude to others on more than one occasion. I don't think he is the owner as other reviews mention. they seem to cater to the take outs first. I always like to have a knife with my meal. last time I was there he told me to order my portions in smaller pieces so he didn't have to give me a knife! that was the last straw and I won't go back. too many other places in town and rude servers don't cut it in my book.

  • Corinne M.

Oh Flying fish, how have I never been there? I really liked this place a lot. Very, very friendly staff, there was a bit of a communication barrier though. To start with, their salad dressing is really good. I don't know what it was, but I could eat their salad all day long. Their teriyaki was really good, and the portions were awesome! We had an avocado bomb, and it was really good as well. We also had a few sushi rolls, and they were really fun, we all loved them, but the price was a little high. I personally don't care about the price, I loved it, so I'll be back, but as for telling a friend about it, I'm not sure many of my friends would pay that much for sushi, it's also really small, so planning a large group would be hard. They really should have happy hour, and maybe they could serve smaller rolls at a lesser price. I don't know why they have beer signs in their restaurant, but they don't serve beer. and I can tell that it confused a customer that was there. Overall, I was satisfied, and happy, so I will be back. Yum!

I would have gave a 3 but will explain why I give this a 2 star rating. My girlfriend and I went here Friday, January 19th a quarter to 4. We were the only ones in the place and were told to pick our seats. A few minutes go by and another lady comes in to order her food to go. Guess who's order was taken first? That's right, not mine! The lady took forever to order which only ticked me off even more (she had no idea what bulging I and kimchi was but insisted on ordering it). In other words, the service here made a horrible first impression. The prices here should also have brought better quality sushi. This definitely doesn't rare up there with Fujiya, Gari of sushi or mandolin sushi and steak! It's a shame because I live closer to this place for the time being. If you like good sushi, go elsewhere.

Disappointed in the food and service here. I ordered a bento box special and the california roll smelled rotten and I had to spit it out. I completely lost my appetite after that! Yuck! I complained to the waiter and she apologized and said it was probably bad rice. Whatever the reason, it smelled gross and it made me want to barf. I was ready to leave at that point. Instead of taking some $$ off the bill, the sushi cook made me another order which I told them I did not want to eat. Anyway, I would steer clear of here and go elsewhere because you have other options.

We recently discovered this to be a great take out spot. I probably won't ever eat at the restaurant, but it appears they do take out frequently. The California rolls are incredibly fresh and delicious and reasonably priced at $4.95 for 8 pieces. The chicken teriyaki was solid - nothing special but what I expect when it takes less than 10 minutes to prepare. I also recently tried the Kung Pao Chicken, which was very flavorful, wasn't breaded, so it tasted light and fresh. Overall, this is one of the best take out spots around, and we frequent many similar places.

Had a wonderful dinner here last night! We ordered up a plate of the Alaskan Rolls sushi, and another sushi with just cucumber (I don't remember the name), along with a plate of Mongolian beef. It was all VERY yummy! The portion size of the beef was small - but we're both eating light these days, so that was fine. Just know it's not your typical Asian restaurant where you're sure to have leftovers. The sushi was fabulous! I'm not a big sushi fan, but the Alaskan rolls were just spot on and were perfect. The Mongolian beef also had wonderful flavor and between the two of us we ate the whole thing (think portion size like a "Lean Cuisine" sort of thing) Also note: the place is TINY! You may not be able to get a table, as there are so few and it's such a popular place. It was PACKED on a Sunday night - a line all the way to the door. Fortunately we were able to get a table to eat it. Service was just so-so. You order at the counter and the wait was LONG. But each sushi dish is made WHEN ORDERED (you can see the sushi chef making them) so that's why it's slow. Don't expect "fast food" Totally "Yay! I'm a fan" 4 starts - we'll definitely be back Dave

Had their Yummy Roll and Crunch Roll. Would say that price could be slightly cheaper. The lady who was working didn't understand certain accommodations we needed. But overall, will visit here again!

  • Kathryn S.

Finally checked it out after hearing good things. I was not satisfied, service was very slow (we called and ordered to go and had to wait when we got there). The food was greasy and just not what we wanted. Won't be going back.

We ordered a veggie sushi roll for my son who is vegetarian. It looked as if it had fish in it, so I pulled it out and ate what was surely fish. I went back to the restaurant with the roll to get something that my son would eat. I was told that the roll was all vegetarian, and they had no plans to make the order correctly so I left never to return. Being in the customer service business myself, I was in awe that they would treat any customer in this manner.

Strongly recommend their chirashi (sashimi rice plate) for those sashimi lovers. I posted a picture earlier too, it has a beautiful presentation and a good amount of fresh sashimi for the price. Their deluxe bento combo is pretty good too if you want a combination of sushi, teriyaki, and tempura. There is so much food on the deluxe bento combo, you can eat it for 2 meals or share it with a friend. The restaurant also offer good quality green tea at no charge. The place is not very big but is nice and cute.

I'm a quarter Japanese and really picky about my sushi rice. The sushi chef here is skilled. It's the best sushi I've had in Tacoma, so far. My visit was insane though. The owner ignores customers eating in the restaurant to take care of take out orders. It took him give minutes to greet us and seat us even though we were standing right in front of him. I took note of people sitting who didn't even have drinks and looked pretty pissed off and opted to sit at the sushi bar, since traditionally, you sit at the bar and order from the chef. Best idea I had. Rather than wait for this man to get to me, I found a sushi slip and my daughter and I ordered the sushi we desired and handed it to the sushi chef. The table behind us still didn't have their drinks. We got our first sushi roll, the table behind us still didn't have their drinks and we didn't have ours, either. The owner was still taking care of take outs. I spied a cooler with drinks so I sent my daughter over to grab us a couple of sodas. The owner eventually got to his tables but he never did check on us once. We ate delicious well-prepared sushi and as I stood in line behind take out customers to pay, the table was just getting their food. I paid for my meal but I didn't leave the tip in the tip jar, I put it on the sushi bar. The sushi chef is the real hero in this place.

This is one of my favorite places for sushi. I have a few rolls in mind that I get every time I eat here. Mars roll, White Christmas Roll, and Boss Roll are a few to name. The draw backs... I've waited in excess of an hour for my meal at times. The owner really needs to spend some $$$ on additional help and maybe even a bigger venue.

    (3)
  • Chris R.

We went here because it was supposed to be the best sushi in Tacoma. The rolls were pretty good (3-4 stars) but the service and dining experience left a lot to be desired. The sushi bar seats 4, and there are maybe 5 or 6 tables in the entire restaurant. The bulk of their business was from people calling in orders and taking sushi to go. In that regard, I'm sure this place is pretty swell. However, I will probably not be back for a Friday-night-out-on-the-town sushi experience.

  • Cherise A.

Great food, bad service. We didn't know whether to come in and sit or wait in line to order. We were next in line, after waiting 10-15 minutes, and were told to sit down. We then had to wait twenty more minutes while he continued to help people coming in the door get their food. During this time, four people came in and left because of the lack of service or their perception of the guy at the front being "rude". If the service was better it would have 5 stars.

No better place in tacoma for Sushi, or Terriyaki The staff/ Owner is amazing

Good was great but the service person was pretty cranky. I will definitely try it again. Everyone has bad days.

So here are the realities of this place: it's in a strip mall, it feels a little like a take out place (clearly they're doing a lot of take out business), the decor is rough and lighting is terrible but it you are able to go in with those expectations the food is quite good for the price, extensive menu, good hot sake, and our order came very quick. As others have mentioned, it is clearly run mainly by one older gentleman (who we found to be very friendly) and one sushi chef, so when things are busy, they get a little nervous and i could imagine, a bit curt -but this did not bother us. Overall if you want a casual place, easy in-and-out and good reasonably priced sushi, it's great. But not a sexy date night place where you want to hang out and have one more drink. My biggest criticism is that it smells a lot like Subway (which is next door) and doesn't exactly allure you into the restaurant- but so it goes.

  • Kimberlee S.

The best sushi in Tacoma! I love this place and you will too if you love fresh, artistic mouth watering sushi! You won't be disappointed! It's great for take out too!

    (5)
  • Chris J.

Really good sushi, good yakisoba, very good tea, horrible service from the owner. No water, no refills on our tea, after taking our order he brought out the tea, and we waited 20 minutes for the sushi. Waiter/owner never checked if we needed anything else, just ignored us. My opinion, go for the food not the service.

    (3)
  • Zane M.

Great food. The guy working the front is great too. Funny and nice. It's a small place, so not ideal for a big party.

  • Misty A.

I'm pretty picky about teriyaki and this place was amazing! We went in around 1:30pm on a Monday, so the place wasn't crowded. The seating area is very small, so don't go with a large group. The portions were perfect, which was great because I split an order of chicken teriyaki with my son. The two other people I was with bought 3 sushi rolls to share. They both really liked each roll. Everything came out fast and fresh. The prices were what you would expect for that type of place.

    (4)
  • Katherine T.

Food: unique choices, good, and reasonably priced (minus gross teriyaki sauce in bento box) Service: the worst, a one man show who barely talks, is gruff, doesn't check on you/refill water/drinks. We waited 10 minutes for the server to come to us after we finished our food so we could pay the bill and eventually just gave up and paid at the register.

  • Jay S.

I really wanna like you, Flying Fish, but every time I go in...you do something weird and I run away again. In what "Japanese" restaurant (or Asian restaurant, for that matter) do you go in and say, "Tea please?", and they bring you Brisk iced tea? I'm laughing and horrified. I couldn't send it back. It was just embarrassing. Negihama is not hamachi with Korean chili paste. Dried out chicken teriyaki. A tatami room that looks like it could convert to a hot tub with the push of a button. I don't mean that in a good way. $30 for an extremmmmmely mediocre lunch for 2? No thanks.

This is my favorite sushi restaurant by far here in Washington. The first thing i did when we moved to the NW was to find the best sushi restaurant in town. Came across this place here in yelp and i'm glad we gave this place a try. My family and i go here at least once a month when the husband and i need a sushi fix. The Ramyun is awesome too! Service is great and fast. If you want great sushi come here. We've tried other sushi restaurants in the area and still we come back to Flying Fish.

I arrived 10 min before they were scheduled to closed. I stood there for almost five minutes before the only apparent server acknowledged my presence and seated me. I had only a minute to review the menu before feeling pressured into ordering. I made a safe choice without time to review the menu and ordered edamame, miso soup, and and a chirashi bowl. Unfortunately, everything was a disappointment. The edamame had a soapy after taste and the chirashi sashimi was slightly frozen and the rice was over cooked and simply flavored with over the counter nori seasoning. I read great reviews but this place did not live up to my expectations AT ALL. Poor service and poor food quality. I will not return.

Kind of a random spot for a Sushi joint being located right next to a gas station and a Safeway but hey, the Sushi is legit! The restaurant is ran by (I beleive) two Korean guys (one sushi chef & one waiter/server). They have a big variety of different specialty rolls and the prices are reasonable. The only down side to this establishment is that they are very limited when it comes to space so I wouldn't take a big party here. Other then that, this is my new sushi go to place.

Driving through town, found flying fish and it didn't disappoint. All 3 of us enjoyed our roles and would definitely go back if we are in the neighborhood again. They need to invest in a bell or some way of alerting them when customers enter however. Waited a bit awkwardly when we entered and watched one worker sit, apparently on break, while another patron entered and also stood awkwardly waiting. Other than that, quality is top-notch.

Delish! The sushi was good and I also got some ban chan and a tofu stew. The teriyaki sauce was very good and we were told its made in house. We really enjoyed this meal.

We always get exactly what we wanted from Lee - at Flying Fish on Pearl Street. We usually go for a bento special with sushi and a teryaki order to suit both of us. We are never disappointed. Flying Fish is our definition of fast food. Close and delicious!

I really wish I would have found this place sooner. This is my new favorite sushi joint. Definitely the best is N. Tacoma. I've been here a couple of times for lunch and dinner. Only once was the restaurant full, but there was one table open (there aren't many tables). The service was excellent (very friendly), the food (both sushi and teriyaki) was great, and the prices are fair. It's not cheap (but not really expensive), but it's quality sushi. I hope to find a place like this where I moved.

Three stars for the food. The service though........SSSLLLLLOOOOW! And we were the only people in there! It took over 10 minutes just to get waters and seemed as if the waitress had lead in her shoes. Not good. The sushi however was very good and artfully presented. Portions were decent and everything was very fresh. I think if I were to ever return it would be for take-out only. Although I do think there are better choices around town.

Great sushi! Incredibly bad service! Server/guy Took my order to another customer realize his mistake took it back to the kitchen then gave it to me! The customer who eat on it even said he was sorry! The server did not say a thing I was with my children & did not want to make a scene! The kids were hungry so I just stayed there, I even ask for a small plate & was ignored. Will not ever come back to this place ever again!

Currently (Winter of 2012-2013) Flying Fish Sushi does not have an alcohol license but their menus still have beer and sake available. Not a big deal but they need to put up a sign to avoid the whole explanation bit that wastes everyone's time. I didn't order any sushi and I don't think I'll be going back to do so, either. "Meh" is about right.

  • Alexis G.

We received very, very poor service here. In addition to having to wait in line behind people picking up to-go orders (he didn't want us to sit down yet apparently), the owner left our table in the middle of taking our orders to answer the phone. There were four of us, and after waiting 25 minutes, we only got half our food, and parts of our order showed up another half an hour after that. We never got everything we ordered. The owner attempted to apologize for the slow service by bringing two of us miso soup, but overall if was a terrible experience. The food was decent, even good sashimi, but definitely not a worthwhile sit-down experience. If you eat here, CALL AHEAD!

There sushi is delicious but not full menu available on Sundays. Specialty rolls have too much sauce for me. Service is just so-so, not prompt. I've been in four times and there has been what appears to regulars coming in the door continuously for take out. I'll be back more because it's convenient not because I crave it.

This is consistently the WORST chicken teriyaki I've ever tasted, its made me and my boyfriend sick both times we've eaten there, and the visits were four years apart. He actually threw up right outside the restaurant tonight. I am sick in bed as I write this, I have a very strong stomach. I've had the sushi from this place and its great, I don't know what it is they do with that salad dressing and teriyaki sauce, but its horrible. Do not order this here.

I'd read some reviews, cool name, thought I'd try this place out. We went there and were dissapointed in the quality of the sushi. The rice wasn't very flavorful, the rolls fell apart on the plate and some of the fish quality/age was pretty low. Some of the rolls we had looked and tasted like someone inexperienced made them. I saw some nice looking Teriyaki go out to other people. Service was slow and they were not very busy. I love sushi and eat it a lot and I don't think I'd go back to this place again.

Great sushi! Good selection of rolls, lots of food for the money. The place is really small and the service is a bit spotty, which is why it doesn't get 5 stars. But we'll be back!

the sushi was good, the service ok but the entire thing was not worth five stars. Actually if I could have figured out how to give 3 1/2 that's what I would have done. Went with a friend and we each ordered a roll and I asked for scallops and she asked for tuna sushi. When the order came, the tuna had turned into flying fish roe which neither of us wanted. the server was a bit confused but we finally got it straightened out and when our tuna came, it had sitting next to us a piece of spicy tuna sushi which was really good. the server was nice but a bit frazzled since every table was full and she was the only one. Thought Osaka had better sushi but terrible service. Isn't there some place that has both?

We've frequented Flying Fish almost weekly for the past year. Their service is great, they remember regulars and the food is amazing. With a sushi chef in the house, the sushi is always fresh and delicious. Moving away and will definitely miss this place!

I ate at the Flying Fish while on a trip to the Olympia, Washington area. I was reluctant to try a sushi resturant in a place unfamiliar but we took a chance. I was extremely impressed with the Sushi chef and his skills. My favorite sushi is Super White Tuna and the Flying Fish had a roll I believe called the White Mountain roll that was topped with Super White Tuna...it had a great texture and taste. It was perfect. I wish this place was in DFW, if so it would be a regular stop for me.

So I'm sorta new to reviewing for Yelp so here goes. I stopped by about three weeks ago because my wife, 6 mo. old daughter and I just moved to the Ruston area. We moved from Milton which is near what thought to be the best teriyaki joint ever in Sapporo Fife. Right from the moment I walked in the door I knew Flying Fish might dethrone the king! The owner (seemed to be the owner?) was really friendly and played with my daughter after smiling and tickling her. He was such a nice guy then was really nice when I just ordered a teriyaki dinner and tuna roll to go. (my way of seeing if the place is any good!) After some polite conversation, i got my food and drove about 10 min home. Then the fun happened. The chicken didn't taste rubbery or burnt, or even like it had been sitting all day. It was hot, juicy and as the husband of a chef, dare I say it tasted like it was brined? In any event, it was a tasty treat. Coupled with a teriyaki sauce that didn't scream salty or sweet or syrupy, it was a great combo. The tuna roll, despite having sat for a few moments, still had some nori snap to it and was actually cuts of tuna, not the tuna smoosh so many places use. The salad was good and the dressing was on the side, not drenching every leaf in mayonaise-y sesame ickyness. Matter of fact, I loved the dressing! tasted very fresh and hand crafted to actually taste like something, not just Miracle Whip and sesame oil. We went on Friday as a family and tried the deluxe bento, Tuna Poke Roll, Tamago and another round of regular teriyaki. Everything was just awesome, the flavors were great, the tempura was crunchy and hot, the teriyaki salmon had caper on it! CAPERS! it was a great addition and a nice surprise. All the sushi was fresh, wonderful and tasted like fresh fish should. My wife and I returned on a very busy Friday a week later and had to wait about 15 minutes to get a seat. It was worth it. The owner was nice to us again and remember my daughter and tickled her feet to make her 'dance' as he called it the week before. We had the sashimi bowl and Koren sashimi bowl with spicy sauce as well as the best thing known to man, the Avocado Bomb. The avocado bomb is spicy crab, tuna and tempura shrimp in a big blob like ball covered in super fresh avocado and drizzled with eel sauce and chili mayo. WOW...... hot, cold, spicy, crunchy....it was amazing. All in all I see this place for what it is. The service is a little slow, but its the owner working the floor. The prices are a tad higher but the quality is outta the ball park! I'll spend my money here any day of the week and be VERY happy to do so!

This place is small and fun :) The service was great! Now you must know that I am not a big sushi fan but I did love the sushi here. My girlfriend Loves sushi and she loved the food here. The place was fun and very clean! I really enjoyed the Flying Fish!

Unlike these other reviews, I was really unsatisfied with the service. We ordered an array of different rolls, sushi, and terriyaki and everything came out at different times. This wasn't a problem only that when the first plate of sushi came out, I asked for extra wasabi and he blew me off. Then when he came over to bring the next dish and saw that we were out of wasabi, I politely asked again and FINALLY, more wasabi!!! We ordered some really good sake but I also wanted water so when he originally took our drink order, I asked for both. Not until the dinner was almost over and asking three times (rejected all three) did my friend have to ask for water. FINALLY, some damn water!!! Fortunately, the rolls and sushi were phenomenal. The fish was super fresh. Some of the rolls were a bit too sweet with the dressing that was added but everything was really good. I'm not even a terriyaki fan and thought it wasn't bad. Sake good too!

This is my second teriyaki joint I'm trying out in Tacoma in my personal quest to finding the "perfect" teriyaki place. I've eaten teriyaki so many times on the Ave when I was a student at University of Washington that I developed my own criteria for trying out new teriyaki restaurants and whether I'll be coming back or not. 1. How good is the chicken teriyaki? The most common dish in any teriyaki restaurant. If they can't make this most basic dish right, you can guess how good the rest of the menu will taste. 2. Price I like cheap. Prices are compared with the price range in the teriyaki restaurants on the Ave as they're the cheapest. 3. How good is the tempura? It's my favorite teriyaki dish. If they don't make it good, I'm not coming back. Walking inside, I can see the place was pretty clean overall. Like most teriyaki places, this one is also Korean-owned which is not a bad thing. At the time, they were playing 98.9 smooth jazz radio. This restaurant was originally called Ichi Teriyaki, but I believe they changed ownership about 2 times since 2004/2005. I ordered the chicken teriyaki with tempura, a favorite dish of mine. I really like the salad served with the chicken teriyaki and tempura dish which had just enough dressing and was slightly thicker and sweeter than other ones I had. I also give them props for serving the dish with 2 decent scoops of rice unlike at Wok & Teryaki where they only give you one measly scoop. The tempura was slightly crunchy (the way it was meant to be) and had a pretty decent taste and texture, but the really thick sweet potato tempura may not have been entirely cooked so it was hard to chew. This pretty common for most teriyaki places to have this problem as well. The tempura sauce could have been better as it was slightly sour, so I'm thinking they may have used a little bit too much vinegar and it could definitely use an improvement. The chicken teriyaki had decent flavor but was more on the dry side than moist, very similar to the previous teriyaki place I went to but at least it wasn't burnt. Overall, it was an "okay" teriyaki place for chicken and tempura. It is better than the last one, but it's certainly not the best I've been to. Some of the reviews say Flying Fish has really good sushi which I haven't tried the sushi yet, but I do plan to come back and try it out and then update this review. Conclusion: Compared Wok & Teriyaki ( yelp.com/biz/wok-and-ter… ), Flying Fish is better for their food overall, but the hunt continues for the best teriyaki in Tacoma.

Came here with my daughter and girlfriend on 4/7/13. We were hungry and looking for sushi and this place had okay reviews and was open on a Sunday so we stopped in. There was one table of people when we arrived and no one else. About ten minutes later the place was packed. The place is very very small maybe and this is pushing it 6 tables? The sushi was very good they even make the rice correctly by seasoning it and there is a very good rice to fish and veggie ratio not completely bathed in rice like Trappers Sushi. I had two California rolls and the shrimp tempura, my daughter had the sweet and sour chicken and a cali roll, and my girl had the Bento box. The box was good but the teriyaki sauce was very very rich and really thick not my favorite. The sweet and sour chicken was pretty good too. My kid ate the entire plate minus the few pieces I stole from her! That should also tell you that you don't get a huge portion of food on your plate. The service was a one man show not very concerned with what the customer wanted he took FOREVER to get back to our table for more drinks and then brought us our bill and I wasn't done ordering and then seemed a bit pissy that I wanted another roll but got it anyways. It was his fault for never checking on us though. Overall we will back not for the service but at least for the rolls! Also the "Sushi bar" has a total of four seats so be prepared for that. Not a good place if there are more than 4 people in your party.

A great place for Teriyaki in Tacoma. Yummy sauce, the sauce is similar to "chopstick teriyaki" south of Renton. I was surprised when I ordered "spicy teriyaki chicken" that it had veggies in it, but it did not disappoint. Solid place.

Friday night, and I've fought my way through brutal Seattle-area traffic to visit a dear friend, in town for a conference. The man loves good sushi like I do; I forwarded him the Yelp reviews for Flying Fish, and he agreed that it sounded lovely. So we show up; the restaurant is tucked into a strip mall (like just about everything else in Tacoma). Inside, the proprietor greets us, and tells us the sushi bar is closed for the evening, indicating with his hands that we should seat ourselves at a table. There is one other couple in the place, sitting in a corner table. It dawns on us what he means: No Sushi. On a Friday night. What the...? Perhaps the sushi chef had an unsightly or unsanitary condition...? We left. Maybe, if I'm trapped in Seattle traffic, and end up waiting it out in that particular strip mall, I'll give Flying Fish another shot.

I stopped in for some chicken teriyaki takeout. The teriyaki was pretty good, not charred like most. I was impressed by the prompt, courteous service. While waiting for my takeout, I watched the sushi chef, it looked really good and fresh. I can not wait to come back for some sushi, soon.

Best sushi in Tacoma? Me thinks so! I think it's safe to say that Tacoma is seriously lacking when it comes to quality sushi; so when I came across Flying Fish Sushi Bar & Grill, I was more than ecstatic. I kid you not, when I popped that first piece of fish in my mouth, tears of joy filled my eyes. So Good! I have frequented the sushi bar for lunch and dinner over the past couple of months and I have yet to be disappointed. The staff is very friendly and welcoming while providing efficient, outstanding service. The food is consistently fresh, skillfully presented, and when you order to go, it comes beautifully packaged in glossy black boxes instead of the Styrofoam that everyone else uses. A minor detail, sure, but it's the small things in life that count. Slowly but surely, I have been making my way down their menu, trying a little bit of everything. So far, my favorites have been the Rainbow Roll (crab, cucumber, avocado, 5 kinds of fish on top) and the Crunch Roll (shrimp tempura, crab, avocado, cucumber, with sauce and tempura shavings sprinkled on top). Also good: Monkey Brains! For the true avocado lover. Not as gross as it sounds, I promise. With over 40 rolls to choose from, a wide selection of fresh fish for those sashimi cravings, and the usual teriyaki specials, there is something here for everyone. Located between a series of small businesses in the Westgate shopping center, Flying Fish remains a hidden gem for the few of us lucky enough to have discovered it.

I have never seen sushi presented so beautifully. It was only surpassed by the taste. We had 4 rolls and I vote for the Crunch Roll. Spectacular! The service is wonderful too. They treat you like famiy, well one that loves you anyway!

Just at here for the first time this weekend even though I live less than a block away. The food was pretty darn good but a little expensive for the amount we got. After we had ordered the man at the front desk asked if we were vegetarians and when we said yes he said there were several vegetarian dishes that weren't on the menu that they could prepare. The food quality was excellent and we will definitely be going back. We got takeout but were given edamame appetizers for free while we waited. The service was excellent as well.

Wow - I just had a sashimi plate there, $20 for 12 pcs and my first thought was - that's a little on the "spendy" side - but wow, it was AMAZINGLY exquisitely fresh fish. MMMMM..... Well worth what I paid. And their miso soup is the best. This place has consistently the freshest and most delectable fish I have ever had, probably in all of WA State. Not sure if they flash-freeze it or what they do, but - A++++++, Flying Fish. (And I am very picky about fish freshness when eating sushi.)

We ate here based on other users reviews and let me say, they were right. The food was delicious! We ordered three rolls (Seattle, Kyle, and Flying Fish), and each was so packed flavor that we did not even want to use our soy sauce dip. The waiter (owner?) Lee was awesome with our 4 year old son. Super service, super food, super prices. We will drive from our home in Renton to eat here again for sure!

Sushi is excellent, prices are what you would expect to pay, and the chef is lovely. The place is tiny and the sushi bar is tiny but for me that's just perfect. I find many sushi bars have their own eccentricity and this place is no exception, it just adds to the charm. I will definitely be going back and I wish I lived closer, I would be in every week!

The worst teriyaki in Tacoma the portions are small and prices are large don't go there and waste your money.

Cozy teriyaki joint with a highly competent sushi chef. Rolls are prepared with care and expertise, and my eel hand roll was prepared last, so the nori would still be crunchy when it hit my hand. I don't know about you, but I really prefer cleanly biting through the nori rather than squishing and pulling in an undignified manner. Yes, I realize this is coming from the same person who will attempt to put an entire piece of sushi that is roughly the size of an English muffin in her mouth, but there you go.

The sushi here was excellent and I have been around the block when it comes to sushi. The prices were decent in my opinion considering how extravagant the rolls can get. Quaint atmosphere too. While we were having dinner there were at least 5 take out orders so the word is spreading :)

I must say that this is a little gem hidden in the westgate area of Tacoma. The service is amazing , the sushi is the best in Tacoma so far in my opinion, and the rolls are filling and tasty. instead of fortune cookies with your bill, you get a small bite sized snickers treat =)

I've been here a few times this past year. The owner is extremely friendly and the price is fair. I usually get the heh-dot-babp = sushi salad and rice bowl. Its a must have for sushi lovers!!

Perhaps the worst service we have ever received in a restaurant. We had to get our own menus, napkins, and extra silverware. We asked for water five times and didn't receive it until we were half way through our meal, by that time we had already gotten water bottles out of our car. The food came out slowly and bit by bit. It was painful to say the least. The food was just so so, and pretty expensive in comparison to other restaurants with superior quality and service. Maybe it was just an off night for them, but we won't be going back.

I have to say that our last visit here was not nearly as good. The quality of sushi had gone down and the service was horrible. In fact, our last couple visits have not been great. Too bad!

This is by far the best sushi place in Tacoma, and I've tried most all of them. Friendly wait staff, but can get busy during the day, and usually there is only one waitress. My favorite roll is the House Roll which is one of their specialty rolls. Every singly roll I have tried there is amazing. Flavors mix together wonderfully. Another diamond in the rough at this place is their gyoza. Its cheap (3.50), you get 7 of them, and they are fresh and crispy on the outside, and so flavorful in the inside. I have also tried the spicy chicken teriyaki, which I thought was great, but I mainly come here for the sushi. You will not be disappointed!!!

Sweet little place, nice service. The best thing was my hamachi sushi--generous and tasty. Had tonkatsu donburi; the tonkatsu was delicious, and the egg-vegetable layer was good, but by the rice level it got boooooring. Tasty tea. They have a cute little faux-tatami room.

FRACKING HORRIBLE My Japanese wife and I had the misfortune to order dinner here a couple of weeks ago. The sushi was disgusting, you'd be better off with grocery store sushi. Just for good measure, there was no hand soap in the men's bathroom. STAY AWAY.

We came here in an attempt to aid my boyfriend's never-ending search for "the second best" teriyaki in town, something closer to home than Little Tokyo on 72nd. We found it: the 2nd best teriyaki in town! I ordered sushi: a specialty roll and the salmon skin hand roll. Can I just say that not only was the service lovely, but the hand roll was beautifully presented and tasted delicious. The sushi chef put a lot of time and touches into it and the specialty roll and it definitely showed. I was very impressed and will definitely be going back to this nice little joint in the North End.

The quality of the sushi was decent, although it is a bit pricey for what one would get. The service could be improved, but it wasn't bad enough to upset me. If I lived close by, I'd visit this restaurant for a casual meal during a week night ... but not worth waiting to be seated though.
