I knew I was going to get something to eat in Spokane... The question was where... 3 places came into mind, The Steer In, Zips or The Onion. The first two being greasy spoon burger joints that I could take with me and continue driving. For both memory sake and the fact that I wanted to get out of the car, have a beer and relax for a bit, I decided to go to The Onion... I can't believe the place is still there, honestly. I went to this place 20 some years ago when there was only one location. Reminds me of a Red Robin type place that is local to Spokane. Had a Black N Bleu burger with onion rings, even though it came with fries or cabbage slaw I decided to skip out on those... With the burger, you have a choice of quarter lb or half lb. Onion rings were mmmm, mmmm good. Burger was decent. Sat at the bar and the service was decent. If wanting for a place to stop by and get out of the car for a decent meal before heading up Hwy 395 or Hwy 2, this would be one place I'd suggest would be a possibility.

The service was pretty good and there were a lot of TV's to watch all the bowl games on. The award winning Philly cheesesteak was just OK. I was a little surprised that it had won a best of award. The pea salad was very refreshing though and a nice choice for a side. Otherwise, I'd go back.

The Prosciutto Olive pizza with the balsamic reduction drizzled was very good and will bring me back.

It's like Red Robin with a little more flare. I ordered the Black Jack burger.. sautéed onions & mushrooms with black pepper sauce and jack cheese. And just like the familiar RR, all burgers come with bottomless steak fries. The Onion does have a one-up on the Dirty Bird tho. If you don't feel like fishing around the mushy steak fries for the few crunchy ones in the mix, you can sub for the super crunchy homemade potato chips instead! Yes I am that excited about these chips, they're pretty awesome. You can also get fresh cabbage slaw instead... I've never tried the slaw so I can't vote yay or nay. Now of course a restaurant called The Onion has onion rings. And yepp, they're freakin phenomenal. Beer battered, they come out with a homemade tartar sauce and are ginormous - each n every one of em are the size of a burger patty. If you eat here, you have to order the rings. You'll be sad if you don't and the table next to you does.

I agree with the previous poster who said it was like Red Robin. I would say the service is much better than Red Robin, but the atmosphere is a little below Red Robin (could probably use a little remodel). We had a Chicken Ceasar Wrap (YUM) and a Club Sandwich (YUM). The fries were very good and the adult beverages were quite strong. Parking is easy. It appears they have a Play Zone for kids- AWESOME. If I had kids, I would really appreciate this. Another really cool thing is that they have plenty of seats for people who are waiting for a table. Give this place a try! You wont be disappointed.

This place is nice enough. I mean its not run-down or anything. The staff were friendly. The food was just really bland. I had the fish and chips and the fish had no flavor. It was disappointing. While it wasn't a horrible experience, I can't really say anything stood out to make me want to return.

As Yogi Berra said "This is like deja vu all over again." Some things never seem to change - and the Onion is one of them. It had been some time since I visited the Onion, and I thought it was an appropriate place to meet a childhood friend that was visiting here in Spokane. Because it is on the north side of town, I just never seem to visit it any more. I remembered it with both fond and disquieting memories (not the Onion's fault) from many years ago - and was surprised that it is still the same - casual and comfortable, with slightly above average food. The service is great with perky greeters and cheerful servers. The food is typical bar food, reminiscent of the Red Robin, or TGIF, but, as mentioned in other reviews, locally owned. We sat in the bar, and after drinking to old times and friends, ordered from a lengthy menu. The food at our table included a French Dip sandwich, Fish and Chips, a spicy thai salad, and a stuffed baked potato. All the food was good, and the portions large. Matt, the bartender, served us, and was very helpful, and accommodating. He was very attentive, but not intrusive - just right. All in all, it was a great evening - and I would recommend the Onion if one would like a casual dining experience with good service.

Good food, nice atmosphere, and service with a smile. A nice place to meet friends or take a family to eat. I ate the BigO Burger and it was hot, tasty, and served medium (as ordered) in a reasonable amount of time. Cole slaw was sort of bland, but decent. Raspberry Lemonade was great. The New York Cheesecake is good, but uneventful.

Great food with a variety for everyone. It has areas that are a bit noisy which is great for families with kids, but it also has tucked away spots that are nice for quieter meals. Try the bacon chicken pizza!

My husband grew up in Spokane, so he always wants to come here when we visit. As a vegetarian, a burger place is not my idea of fun, but I can always make due. I tried the Thai Chicken Wrap--without chicken--and I thought it was excellent. Spicy and tasty. My husband was happy with his burger and both our kids enjoyed their food and dessert. It was fun to watch all the cool vintage cars "cruising" on Riverside. Not sure if this is an every Friday occurrence or if there was a special event but it added to the charm.

So glad they brought back the old Cesar Dressing - my family stopped going after awhile because the quality of the food changed, they have now brought back old favorites and my Cesar dressing! Also have a great steak appetizer - very worth the $!

I have been to the Onion several times, and I am never blown away by anything in particular, the prices are on the higher end considering what you are getting and it reminds me of every other chain restaurant in town. Nothing special, but I will say the huckleberry margarita's are delicious.

Dinner here tonight with daughter & wife. Dinner consisted of two burgers w Fries, pulled pork sandwich glass of beer, wine, lemonade. Tab was~$60 before tip. Never asked how we'd like our burgers. Both came cooked beyond done,-really dried out. Pulled pork no better. No BBQ sauce offered either. For a place that specializes in Burgers this is inexcusable. Red Robin beats these guys by a country mile. Burger King is better.

The French onion soup is awesome. Great bar selection. Pricy tho.Waiter service was amazing. Even though they don't have chili cheese fries they offered to run to the store and they where SERIOUS TOO. Gotta love that level of service.

Like the gentleman who reviewed The Onion on 12/30/12, we had an awful experience and will not be back. We went out for a birthday celebration with our grandmother and two small children. Upon entering we inquired about the wait and were told it would a few minutes, 20 minutes later and two other families who entered after us being seated, we went up to see why we were not yet seated. Three different people had been doing the seating and we had been skipped over due to the lack of organization. We should have left then, but had a hungry kid. The waitress took our drink and app order, brought our drinks then we did not see her for another 40 minutes. The restaurant was not busy. We finally flagged her down to see what happened to our appetizer order. She went to check and came back saying she had forgotten to drop that part of the order. At this point grandma was ready to leave, our little boy had watched a full episode of his favorite cartoon and was starving and we were all annoyed. The waitress assured us that the main order would be right out. The food came out after we had been sitting close to an hour, no apology for the wait with seating, the lack of appetizer or the long wait for food and the food itself, cold and disgusting. Complete disregard for quality at all levels.

The Onion is never a disappointment. The food isn't haute cuisine but the food is always great and the service is extraordinary. Premium burgers and fantastic sides are the stars of this menu.

Really fun atmosphere! The wooden bar is marvelous. The onion rings are huge and delicious. The burgers are just standard fare. The diet meal was bland and flavorless. The Thai wrap was big and bursting with flavor. All in all a fun place for a night out. The food is just the standard bar fare.

Excellent Onion Rings, and as it was mentioned before, they truly are as big as donuts! lol I enjoyed the Oriental Salad and nibbled on my husband's burger and onion rings. Everything tasted fresh and delicious, my huckleberry lemonade was perfect too. It helped that our server was friendly and efficient too.

The Onion was more than disappointing! Two stars is being nice. I have been here before so I wasn't expecting the world... I knew what the ambience was (similiar to The Ram/ Red Robin type place) so I wasn't turned off by that... however the food was TERRIBLE. We were a party of 8 and NO one was remotely impressed with their meal, and we all ordered different things! The fish and chips were $15.99 and dry and few, came with more fries than anything (in Seattle you can get amazingly better fish and chips for $8). Also my niece ordered the fettuccini and it was just noodles with TONS of garlic butter... no flavor just a sickening buttery dish that any 12 year old could concoct. Even my other nieces kids grilled cheese sandwich was made with extremely dry bread...and the chicken fried steak which when ordered our waiter said was "one of the best things on the menu" was dry and tasteless... just overall food quality was amazingly LOW and reminded me of food you get in a school cafeteria... I honestly would say don't waste your money ever eating here when you get a better meal anywhere else (even fast food would be tastier, and I am not a fast food fan)... Cons: Food is bland, dry and overall disappointing also overpriced for the quality. Pros: Service wasn't bad, and they sat us right away even on a weekend with 8 people (which should have been my first sign! Lol)

In town visiting family, The Onion was a planned event! No one makes onion rings like these fine folks! I had my onion rings and a cold beer....excellent as always. My son had a burger and was very pleased. The prices are a bit high, but the service was superb! Thanks for the yummy visit.

The manager was a bit nervous as he witnessed 19 of us descend upon his restaurant. He implied he could not accommodate our party at all that night, even if we broke up into smaller groups. Hm. Not what I would say was best business practices. He could have said, "Let me see what I can do for you all." The waiter was fairly nice. I ordered the Hawaiian Chicken Burger. I don't think I've ever had a drier piece of meat unless I tried on purpose to overcook a piece of meat (but why?). The "dry tack" was tolerable with the pineapple slices and cheese. No wait. That's not correct. Everything on this burger was DRY TO THE BONE. the pineapple slices were old and dry, and the cheese wasn't gooey, but had coagulated into a hardened piece of le fromage. The only thing that wasn't dry was my side salad. But then again, why would a salad be dry? Anyway, you can make up your own mind. This was my second day visiting Spokane and had been disappointed with the couple of restaurants I experienced thus far.

This is best in the pack that the national chain Applecrap's trawls the bottom of. The Onion is a great local place, a step above similar places. The staff makes the place, just good people. The food is honest, well priced - your not overpaying for what your getting. The beer taps are rotated well, no flat beer. Overall its a great place. Know what your getting, most importantly, know your not overpaying for microwaved food that predominates this restaurant segment. Trust me, your going to be putting better ingredients into your body at The Onion than Applecrap's, Red Robin or the rest of the national chains.

The Onion was great. We only had to wait about 5 minutes before getting a table. The table was pretty large for 3 people, and I liked that! I started off with a nice 25oz brew which was actually brewed in Spokane. Next it was time to decide what to order. I ended up getting a burger with cheese, and a large onion ring on it. Loved the fact that you can choose what type of bun! Our cute server also was nice enough to ask if we'd like any sauces with our meals. I opted for both their tartar and ranch, you know, to see how they faired against other places. Overall great. Not sure what else I can say.

Deep Fried Oreos. Disgustingly delicious? Oh yes. The burgers, onion rings, and drinks are all great as well. It was a fun spot to hit up with friends for appetizers or a full meal. Their reader board quips always made me smile for some reason. It's a great joint to hit up with family or friends.

Very much like a TGI Fridays or Ruby Tuesdays with a locally owned twist. The food is what you would expect at the usual prices but fresher than the usual in my opinion. Best to place to go on the menu would be the burgers, it's pretty hard to miss with any of them. The bar and pool room have plenty of TVs and if it's a "big game" (read: Zags), you can usually convince the bar staff to turn down the godawful canned music and turn up the game. What really sets this place above the others are the bartenders, they are fast, pour a good drink, and know when you want to chat or just shut-the-hell-up. My only real gripe is the way the beer prices have crept by nickles and dimes to a price that is getting hard to justify, AND THEY CHARGE SALES TAX ON TOP OF THAT!!! Full disclosure- when I am in Spokane you can usually find me sitting at table 105 in the bar with the usual suspects. Yes, I agree, it a sad pathetic statement about oneself when you know the table number you are barflying (is that a word?).

Nice service in the bar. The onion ring appetizer was big and ok. My burger was a 2-1/2 star as the menu said "world class burgers" but didn't live up to that. My wife said her stuffed baked potato was good. I would go again to get full but the food didn't blow me away. Good beer selection.

you'd think by the name that they'd make a decent french onion soup...worst ever. thick hard cheese with a layer of oil and way overly salted. never again.

  • Jeff O.

The food is not good. If you're looking for food in this category then drive a little further up north and hit Red Robin. The food and experience is ok, The Onion saw it's best days in the mid 90's and hasn't done much to change since. If you go expect: crazy bday song, cheese sticks, lots of balloons for the kids up front and several sides of your favorite sauces (tarter, ranch, bbq...).

  • Melissa G.

We love the Onion! We usually go tot he downtown location and are never disappointed. It can get pretty crowded but the waits are never too long. I love their onion rings to start, which is their specialty. The are huge and come with the best tartar sauce! The chips and salsa are great as well, and are endless. I always usually order the Backyard Burger, which is a bacon BBQ cheesburger. I think it's the best burger in town. Their fries are also great (and also bottomless!) and make sure you ask for tartar sauce for the fries. The Oriental Salad is also really good if you're looking for something lighter. They have a nice bar area as well. The service is always really good and everything is affordable. I love this place!

  • Jeff J.

Large onion rings, though not terribly flavorful. Atmosphere along the lines of Red Robin or TGIF. While I'm always supportive of local buisness over chains, I'd rather go to Dick's for a burger.

  • Mark H.

I've been to the onion many times and it never disapoints. Decent menus options: burgers, salads, soups, sandwiches,a few pasta offerings and basic seafood items like salmon and fish n chips. Obviously anything with onions is a good choice and they have especially good onion rings. Nothing really wrong with the place it just doesn't wow me enough for the price to get a higher rating. Place could use a new decorator, a bit busy with the Harley and all the stuff on the walls

  • Lamar J.

This place, as mentioned previously, is in the same vein as Chile's and Applebee's. I've kind of gotten my fill of these types of places but I was outvoted by my friends who said it looked interesting. It was actually pretty nice on the inside and was pretty much what I expected. Unfortunately that's the bad part. The food was serviceable and had the standard fare for this type of restaurant. I guess I shouldn't really complain because it's not really trying to be something it's not. I guess it's just not my type of place.

  • Sara A.

I have gone to The Onion about 3 times and have concluded that they are just ok. I enjoy the French Onion soup..it is delicious. The Navy Bean soup is good too. However, everything else is just ok..including the service. One time the server mess up my order and on another occasion I had to wait extremely long for refills. All in all, if you want good soup, it is a great place to go.

    (3)
  • Jenna B.

This place has great onions rings, if you love the large, greasy, crispy kind. The have the typical bar food-chicken strips, calamari, burgers, fish and chips, etc. I had the onion rings, of course (how can you go to The Onion and not have them??!) and I had a buffalo chicken burger. Both were great, not the best. If you like bar food, which I got to admit, I need it sometimes, then this is the place for you!

  • Debbi C.

Onion rings that are the size of donuts!!!! I could make a meal just out of the onion rings. OMG...yum!!!! The burgers are excellent and the mini-desserts are a great idea for the little 'dessert compartment' we all have in our tummy :) Service is great. Atmosphere is festive, but not overly noisy. Fine for well-behaved kids too.

  • Nick B.

The Onion is consistent and pretty good. Best parts are the burgers, onion rings (heck, the fried food in general), and sandwiches -- I especially like the french dip. Portions are large. Service is generally nice and pretty quick. I first went there as a kid, and thought it was great fun. Nothing has really changed my mind since.

Oh My Golly! The ONion is da' Bomb! Okay..now you can take me seriously. Last weekend while visiting my cousin in Spokane we decided to eat at The Onion. Myself, I'm from the south of Washington and I'm not too familiar with Spokane, only having been there a handful of times. So back to last weekend.... Roadtrippin' with Grams and Gramps to Spokane to visit my cousin who is currently attending Gonzaga. Gram says, where do you wanna eat? Cous says the ONion! My favorite place! So we hop in Gramps' pimpin truck and head to this location of the ONion. We get in there and the place is booming! There are peeps all over and so we get one of those things that beeps when your table is ready and hang out for a bit-but a very reasonable time considering the crowd. We get to our booth and we are immediately greeted by a kind young stallion ready to take our drink orders. We order; first comes Grampa's chowder, he quickly devours and make a posotive comment. Next comes Cousins Edamame-The entire devours, again greatly enjoyed. Next come our meal at a very promp and quick time. I ordered the Bleu Cheese Burger-incredible if I say so myself. Not only was the Burger GREAT but the best part was the ONion Rings!! I tried one and was in instant HEAVEN!! Im talkin' PARADISE! All the other meals were so great too!! The waiter was kind and helpful making sure our cups were never empty. Grandma even told him he looked like Russel Crow (True Dat) and he suddenly picked up an Australian accent. NExt came the fried oreos, to die for!! As you can see from this long entry that the whole experience was great with a wonderful, light environment. I would gladly support the ONion any time!

Ah, The Onion. Whenever I had friends or family visiting me while I was in college, we'd come here for tasty food and good drinks. As others have said, very much like Red Robin and other chain burger restaurants, but not as annoying. Loved the hula burger...miss the onion rings.

    (5)
  • Chanthi L.

t's a heart attack waiting to happen. Everyone talked up the onion rings and we had that as our app. Yuck! They were so greasy and sat unfinished on our table. The rest of the meal didn't fare much better. I'm not impressed. Moving on . . .

Really great burgers, and really great fries. The Onion has a nice atmosphere, they're usually busy but not busy where you have to wait to sit down. I highly recommend The Onion to those who love a nice burger.

  • Jay L.

Great burgers, not quite as good as Red Robin but that is hard to top IMO. But Red Robin is too much like those Carl's Jr. commercials with the cheesy birthday songs and "Flare". I like the more laid back atmosphere at the Onion. I had one bad experience there but I mostly blame the crappy waitress so I gave it 4 stars.

  • Morgan W.

Love, love, love this place! Great food, you must get their dessert trio! What's even better is they use local, fresh ingredients and make most stuff from scratch, that's rare these days!

  • Arlene R.

We've been here 3 times and have liked it every time! I got a burger the 1st time, and it was juicy and delicious! My husband's mac and cheese was full of oozy, melty, cheesy scrumptiousness! The 2nd time, my hubs had a burger without the bun (we were doing the Ketogenic Diet)...still every bit as delicious, and I had the Cobb salad--yum! The last time we were there, we had bunless burgers and side salads--wonderful again. Waitstaff is courteous and accomodating.

First off let me just say Stacie our server from last night 5-12-15 was amazing from San Francisco to spokane last night we got the best service I had ever experienced from a restaurant. She was friendly, patient, and our food was hot our drinks were never empty and she was right there if we needed anything. The hostess was friendly and extremely efficient (sorry I for got her name :/) all and all they made this one of the best stops on our honeymoon. Now the food. The Onion is on point I would have easily payed $25+ for that burger there BBQ pulled pork was so tender it was like a meat sauce for the beef pattie. The bacon rounded out the barnyard trifecta perfectly the onion straws gave it a crunch that completely changed the dynamic. Not to mention the chilli mayonnaise that brought the heat but not overpowering. Then to top it off we got the deep fried oreos for desert. And they were the best fried oreos I have ever had (and I'm a fat guy who loves food) I highly recommend this place. Oh and just an f.y.i I didn't believe my wife when she told me but here in Spokane they ask you if you want tartar sauce everywhere lol

In town for Hoopfest. This place was much nicer inside than one would expect. The tap house side: Area 51 is well done. Edison bulb chandeliers and industrial touches. The food was good, hearty bar food. Particularly the 1/2 Sicilian flatbread and 1/2 salad was filling and worth the order. The steak sandwich comes with a pepper gravy that is deeeelish. If we are ever on this side of Spokane ever again, we will likely stop by for drinks and apps with friends.

A friend and I were looking for a restaurant that stayed open late with a relaxing atmosphere, good food, and good drinks. Knowing that The Onion's "Area 51 Taphouse" bar area is open until midnight on the weekends, we I decided to try it out. The atmosphere is cozy yet spacious, the staff is abundant and attentive and all in great spirits. In fact, we saw many employees hanging out after their shifts were over, that's a true testament to what a nice place it is to relax while having a drink and some good food. Our server was awesome, funny, and very good at his job - as was every other person working. Our food was delicious (as it always is at The Onion), you can order from the full menu in the bar area, even if the restaurant area is closed (I believe the restaurant closes at 10, and the bar area stays open 'til 12 on the weekends). The food came fast, our orders were correct (even with multiple substitutions/changes) and we were never left with an empty glass. I ordered the pulled pork tacos, which were super yummy, and a side of onion rings (which are the best in town!) - my friend ordered the appetizer nachos, which was a gigantic portion and very delicious! We stayed until nearly closing time, long after finishing our meal, just because the atmosphere was so nice, and the people working so friendly. We will definitely be returning!

Nice place up on Division. Been here twice now. We made a huge mistake and tried the signature fried onion rings . They are terrible!! I mean really bad! I am sorry but these are not even close to good fried onion rings. We honestly could not even finish them. Chewy, bad batter, over cooked, pricey, hard to even swallow, etc. I would Avoid! Now to the Burgers! Great. Really enjoyed them and also had a very good club sandwich to boot! Flatbread , yummy! I really like the upgraded Area 51 bar! Decent place to watch game with great beer selections. Prices bit high, bit decent. Cozy in the bar! Our service was slow both times but nice guys, just not enough help on the nights we went! Will go back to watch a game or two here for sure!

Servers name: Emily Atmosphere: Casual Price: Decent ($11-$35) Service: Welcoming, Polite and Respectful Parking: Huge free parking lot. Okay. So, The Onion was the 2nd restaurant i visited moving to Spokane for the first time in 2013. I actually really like this place and the vibe in it. Here are some thoughts: Lets start with the outside: Driving up/down Division - you will notice a large LED sign. The Onion are always posting updates and specials on their sign outside. It's hard to miss with that big Onion logo on top of the sign. Then there is the parking lot - I am pretty sure you won't have a problem with finding parking here. Walking in: There are 2 sets of doors when entering. In between the doors is a 7ft spoace (Don't quote me on that) - to the right of the space are weekly specials for the bar. If that's your taste that take a pic to keep it stored in your phone. Now, pass the second door - you will be greeted. here ts the cool thing about the waiting area - to the left of the greeters is a play area for kids - what? yes. It is pretty cool. Well to the left of that is the ...well...washrooms. Hey! The washrooms are kept clean and there is even a couch/bench in the washroom. Not sure what you would use it for but maybe the stats said it was needed. Getting served: The are sections for booths and tables. The servers are polite and the service with food is great. I absolutely love their chesse sticks. It's so fresh and thicker than ones I find at, well...Dennys or IHOP. Main Dishes: I love their burgers but my favorite sandwich is the "Philly Cheese Steak". Oh - I can taste it right now just thinking about it. Deserts: We had creme brulee and the service size was generous. I haven't had a dish that sweet and rich in for...honestly - 2 days. But their specialty is "DEEP FRIED OREOS" - yes that sounds weird and yet interesting. i love it...but it's a taste to get used to. Overall impression: Good time - reminds me of other fun places like Bubba Gumps. Hope you enjoy your time here. I do and so does the friends I bring here.

Stopped in today while waiting for car repairs to be completed. The dining room was closed since it was still pretty early in the day so we went to the bar area. The menu has some good selections. The pulled pork looked great. Great for burgers and their fries were awesome! The staff was very nice and accommodating. Would recommend and look forward to our next visit.

After a short wait (long enough to check in on Yelp), I was seated promptly near a motorcycle, which I planned to ride after my meal. I did look into Area 51, but it was too mysterious for me. With several potential options on the extensive menu, the waitress had to come back to give me enough time to decide. I don't usually order mac and cheese, too many Kraft dinners while I was in college, but their Epicurean mac and cheese made with Brie cheese sounded yummy. Tempting, but not. Fall Harvest Salad from the "fresh menu" in January? Skeptical, but the baby kale, which I'm sure I read somewhere is healthy, sold me. After the waitress described the two sizes, I opted for the full size, which if shared or if starving is perfect. Apparently, I was starving because I didn't share. Fall Harvest Salad also featured crumbled bleu cheese, candied cranberries and apples (I think the apples were described as apple compote). Whatev. It was delicious. No room left for dessert, and I'll have to save that ride on the motorcycle for the next time I'm here.

Omg the sandwich and pea salad I got from here were soo yummy. The only thing I would complain about was the slow service :( The waitress was super sweet & friendly but my food took like 30 minutes to get to my table and there was only two other people in the whole place(it was like 11am)... other than that though, I'd definitely try this place again. The decor was super nice and like I said I enjoyed my food very much. I'd recommend this place for lunch because I can't comment on the dinner as I haven't tried it yet. I had a turkey bacon sandwich on rye. Yum Yum!

Had an Incredible time! The North Division location is notability, but specifically different. There is a wonderful & familiar energy, and the food is incredible. I had a "State of the Onion," burger, which was amazing. They also have a promotion for their awards-winning onion rings, which we got. SO. MUCH. TASTY.

Haven't been here for some time now since we moved to the valley. Sure not like it use to be that's for sure. When most of the tables are empty during dinner rush on a weekend, this should tell you something. Onion rings were to die for, service was quick and friendly. One beer two ice tea's 6 onion rings 2-six layer dips 1 hamburger and a bill for $68.50 plus a 10.00 tip holy crop a 80 dollar night for the 3 of us. Won't take long for this place go under with prices like that. You can sheer a sheep many times but skin it only once.

Great experience from beginning to end! Dana was our server and he was great! He was attentive, we never went empty on our drinks, and everything was timed perfectly. There isn't anything more I could've asked for. We typically sit in the bar when we go out, but it was under construction. Despite the construction, the restaurant was still very clean and didn't skip a beat! Looking forward to the new Area 51 Taphouse they are building in their restaurant. 51 taps and 50 bottled beer. So many choices.... Can't wait!

I really enjoy the new Area 51 Tap House. Great food and a palatable selection of drinks to choose from. The evening staff are very helpful and welcoming; I appreciate their positive demeanors. Taylor is laid back and treats you like a bro. Elena is a sweetheart with a great smile. Drue and Brittany make a extraordinary team. Cody keeps it real and has customer service skills that are worth visiting for. There are multiple places to sit in the warm and understated atmosphere. The place displays a clean, modern, yet rustic interior. The music is always pretty neutral and enjoyable. The Cougar Gold Sliders are the best sliders I've had. Mind you, I am not yet a world traveler. But they were no doubt notable in the food log of my life. The fries were pretty fantastic and the little crispy buggers were bottomless when with one of their finely crafted burgers. I'd recommend giving the place a few tries.

Great happy hour from 3-6pm - appetizers are more than filling and a great selection of brews on tap!

You know you become complacent sometimes going to a place over and over and over but honestly this time it's been the best. With the revamped atmosphere and lots of beers on tap topped off with great service you're bound to find something that fits your pallet. So go in kickback watch sports have a beer (51 on tap) and get a great meal. Make sure Cody is there!

Another great hamburger joint! We decided to grab a quick bite before heading out of Spokane and this establishment was close. The Onion has been a Spokane staple for many years and they now have two places to choose from. Downtown or north Division. As we were way up north, we chose to eat here. The restaurant has quite a lot of space and when we arrived, we were seated within a few seconds. This was probably because it was after 7 p.m. and the six o'clock crowd was just leaving. The food menu is pretty standard but the beer menu is quite outstanding with 51 different beers available, many of them on tap and many also from local breweries. For under $20 you can have a hamburger, bottomless fries and a large beer. There are a number of interesting hamburgers you can enjoy as well as the option of a quarter or half pound burger. The place is kid friendly although probably less so as the night progresses. The service was good and the waitress checked back frequently. Overall, a very pleasant meal. P.S. Check out the Harley before you leave!

The bottom line: It's expensive, and you don't get much for the price. If the portions were larger and the prices a little more reasonable, this could easily be a 4 or 5 star because I had the Smoked Salmon Fettuccine and it was super delicious. They also have a great beer selection, and a big menu with a variety of items.

Food is good, a little spendy for what it is, but good. The servers and other staff in the restaurant are all sooo nice! We didn't wait or want for anything. Top notch service!

I loved this place. The selection of food is great. The other two people I was with did not like the place though. I would definitely eat here again.

I use to really like this place because offered good food for a decent price. Then over the last couple years I noticed the portion size dropping off and the price increasing. The food was still really good, but I always left hungry. This last visit was just ridiculous. I stopped by for lunch with a friend. The price was absurdly high, the serving size left me hungry, which was fine because the quality wasn't there either. Just an utter disappointment.

This place was pretty good. Super family friendly! They messed up my drink (but admitted to it) and didn't charge me, the onion soup is pretty salty so beware! Still oh so yummy! I had a burger, it was delish! I sent my In laws there last nights and they said it was packed and the service was great, but that the soup was salty (again, beware), I warned ya! :) it's pretty clean, I'm all about the cleanliness of placed especially with a baby. It was a little dark though down below in the room in the front, but pretty private if your looking for that. We will go again for sure!

I used to love The Onion (like 2-3 times a week while my daughter danced), and still love the fries and pepper sauce, but the portions have shrunk, the Northside location is in a never ending remodel with no beer selection. I think i will probably give it another chance when/if the remodel is complete but the last several times have been very disappointing.

As others have astutely pointed out, The Onion is a lot like Red Robin. And my family loves Red Robin! What's not to love? It's consistently good, the menu is predictable, and the burgers and onion rings are wonderful. 'Nuff said! One more detail needs mentioning: the deep fried Oreo is the most decadently delicious thing I've ever had in my life! We've been both to this location and the downtown site. Both are equally good.

We came on a busy Saturday night. The host said it was a 20 minute wait. We waited 30 minutes and then decided to move to the bar. They said That the wait was an additional 10 minutes. No big deal the bar offers the full menu. We sat down and ordered. I had the onion rings and the jalapeño bacon burger. Our server Carly was super sweet and very attentive, even though her section was super busy! We received out food rather quickly for how busy the restaurant was. Burger was good. Nothing out of this world. Their tartar sauce was delicious!!! And the the onion rings too! They did bring my grandmother a brownie ice cream cake for her birthday with a candle and that was super sweet and delicious. I would come here again. But like I said nothing out of this world. My grandmother did say that the monte cristo was "The most delicious sandwich I HAVE EVER HAD"

This place is fantastic. Amazing staff. Went above and beyond and provided the best dining experience yet in Spokane after 1 year. Go and see Jon, he's great!

Maybe because I haven't been here in almost 20 years during my bar hoping days but I seem to remember it being a lot better. Burger was dry and service was pretty slow. Friendly enough but took a long time to get serviced and even longer waiting on the second order of fries. I don't think it was the servers fault but who knows. By the time they came I really didn't want them anymore. The guy refilling drinks was good and I never had an empty glass. This place would have blown the doors off red robin, but now not so much.

I was very disappointed in this visit. My wife and I went together for lunch and we both ordered off of the specials menu. The sandwich I received was supposed to be a club melt sandwich. Apparently the chef either soaked it in pickle juice or spilled pickle juice on it because the sandwich was soggy and all you could taste was dill pickle juice. My wife ordered the burger but was on the special menu. It came with enough onions to start an onion farm and almost no meat. Our waitress was nice but she was very soft-spoken and difficult to communicate with. I also noticed since the last time I have been there they have removed all of the condiments from the tables. I had to ask for ketchup and mustard and then I was given a half a teaspoon of each in a plastic cup forced to ask for more. I guess they've gone through some menu and operational changes since the last time I was there. This place used to be great with great food. It has sadly turned for the worse in a big, big way.

I have good memories of eating at The Onion back in the early 1980's, before Red Robin was a thing. I remember the old back bar at the downtown location, the giant onion rings and French Onion soup, and the loaded potato skins. I was in town with my family this weekend and we happened to drive past the newer location on North Division. We had missed lunch and were kind of starving, so I was excited to share one of my childhood favorites with my family. The North Division location didn't have the unique atmosphere of the original, and it felt a little dark and dated. The hostess was very friendly, however, and we were seated immediately. Our server had us set up with water and drinks within minutes. We were hungry and ordered mozzarella sticks to start. They were just okay. I'm not sure why I didn't go with onion rings or potato skins, like I loved as a kid. We ordered a couple of different burgers, a Reuben sandwich, and the baked spaghetti. Our burgers were huge and delicious. My wife loved her Reuben, and the baked spaghetti was a hit with my youngest. We took advantage of the unlimited fries, and were so full we weren't able to try the fried Oreos. We all left satisfied, for sure. I'd say three stars for ambiance, and a solid 3.5 stars for the food, but the very good service pushed it up to four stars for our visit.

I was forced to go there twice in one month due to my families previous affection for it both times it was disgusting and very over priced. I spent 20 dollars for a small flatbread pizza and a soda. The waiter was trying his best but almost everyone of our parties orders were wrong. The entire lunch took about 2 hours form beginning to end and sorting out the problems with the check took about a half hour by itself. This is defiantly a restaurant whose best days are behind them.

The best service we have had since coming to Spokane was here today by Sarah. She was on top of everything even though we were the last customers in the restaurant section of the place I did not feel rushed. Great experience we will defiantly be back.

Great food and great service. The portions are very filling that none of us were able to finish (though we did get the macho nacho appetizer as well) and the price is reasonable at around 10-15$ per entree. Kayla was our server and she was very friendly and the service fast.

God awful. Dirty, lousy service, and sandwich bread was moldy! The manager comped the moldy sandwich since we didn't want a replacement. Blamed the bread delivery guy instead of his own cook. Really?? Stay away and enjoy any place else. You were warned!

This was my introduction to Spokane! When I was looking for a place to first eat, someone recommended this place and I wasn't disappointed. Pretty standard american food, big salads and lots of beers on tap! Not the most spectacular meal you'll ever have but they do everything right and there's a lot to be said about that. Overall, a good downtown location with great atmosphere.

Prices have gone up a bit, but still fair. Love the atmosphere and always consistent good service and food. We go here often and never had a bad experience. That says a lot about their service and food quality.

I have been going to The Onion since 1991 when I moved to Spokane. What a great place to hang out with friends and eat! I've actually spent several hours there with friends, often closing it out, and never felt pressured to leave or even purchase more food or drinks. I moved from Spokane in 2003, but still make it a point to go there every visit and the servers actually remember me! It's amazing and must eat/drink place when in Spokane!

It was a very disappointing experience. It started out nice. The waitress was busy so the manager came over and took our drinks orders so we wouldn't be waiting for drinks. Once the waitress came over she was very pleasant and took our dinner and cheese appetizer order. It went downhill after that. The girl who brought our appetizer over dumped half of the crackers on the floor. The cheese dip was very runny. Taste was OK, but it took us asking 2 different gals to bring the rest of our crackers so that we could finish up the cheese dip. The crackers arrived at the same time as our dinner order. So we really didn't get to enjoy the cheese dip appetizer. My son's quesadilla was bland and cold. I ordered the Rhonda special which was a teriyaki chicken plate. The sauce came on the side? That was odd. I went to pour it over my chicken and rice and noticed that it was PURE soy sauce. Not teriyaki sauce as ADVERTIZED? WTH? I asked our server who told me that they ran out of teriyaki sauce in the kitchen. So instead of asking me earlier if I wanted to order something else they were going to try and pass soy sauce off for teriyaki sauce. Then it got better. Another waitress decided to take it upon herself to bring out another "sauce" that was "like teriyaki" she told me. I think this was some sort of fish sauce. At this point I got pissed and told them if they had told me that they had run out of teriyaki sauce I would have been happy to order something else. Instead they tried to fool the customer with some shenanigans. I was asked if I wanted to order something else at this point. Duh. They gave me the menu and 10 minutes later came back to inquire about what I wanted to order in place of my teriyaki chicken. 10 minutes? No rush here to try and make the customer happy for their screw up. At this point I order a burger. I wasn't very hungry anymore. My burger took about 20 more minutes to come out. I was able to watch the other 6 people in my party finish dinner. By the time the burger came out everyone else at my table was done eating. To top it off, the manager pointed out to my wife that they took my teriyaki chicken off the bill and replaced it with the burger. Nothing beyond an apology. Our entire meal was uncomfortable. My diner was a shambles. Not even a free desert or drink? Where I come from this does not happen. My dinner would have been free. My family will never visit the Onion again. ======================================= 01/16/2013 Update - I sent in my complaint via their web site to the general manager of The Onion about 2 weeks ago. Have not heard back from her. Not too impressed again.

Reviewed in August. A locally owned restaurant with very good burgers, sandwiches and salads. Much better quality than a chain ( actually, they have another one downtown, so I guess they're a chain too, just a shorter one). A great place to grab a bite but the downtown location has a little better atmosphere.

My first visit to The Onion - a quick lunch - so I'll make it a short review: Good tartar sauce. Great burger (Big O, it made a helluva first impression - I don't normally take pictures of my food, but I did today). so so fries. Service was friendly but kinda slow, albeit, it was peak lunch hour and pretty busy. The menu looked interesting enough - upscale American pub food, with fair prices. Decor is vintage pub cool - clean and looks like a nice place to hangout, am thinking it would make a good business lunch gathering for more casual meetings. Walking distance from Convention Center and IB Theater.
