The Cliff House Restaurant is a gem almost at the top of Mount Mansfield. For someone to claim the view is OK, it must have been on a foggy day. When we were there, you could see over 200 miles past the snow capped Presidentials in New Hampshire, with Mt Washington's peak clearly visible. The restaurant is a few steps from the Gondola offloading at Stowe, easily accessible. The Maitre D' sat us on a window seat with spectacular views. If you get there early, the restaurant provides for soft moccassins so customers can shed their ski boots and eat in total comfort. For lunch, both seafood and meat entrees were cooked to our satisfaction. Wine selection was excellent. The only warning is that if you're going there for a budget meal, go somewhere else. You're paying for the view. The other thing to consider is that if you're skiing, either Perry Merrill or Cliffside runs are on the challenging side, and these are the easiest runs from the Gondola. Tackling these on a bloated stomach can be troublesome.... ;-) We were very satisfied. And will return

A beautiful view, the Ride and Dine special was a FABULOUS deal! David seemed more interested in schmoozing a pair of customers rather than helping turn over a table for diners waiting in the reception area. Scott was an awesome and attentive waiter, took care of us well even though his gratuity was included in the special.

Why don't more restaurants serve fondue at lunch? I love this place as it's a very adult place for skiers, unlike the usual cafeteria options where they huddle you together with plastic plates and cups and overpriced beer. This one has nice silverware, real glass ware and tablecloths. Sure it's pricey, but did I mention that you are not eating in a cafeteria? The setting is spectacular. The menu is inventive, but I have to say we've eaten here three times and had fondue twice so what do I know about the rest of the menu? I know people freak about about cheese, but seriously this is excellent ski fuel. A glass of red wine and you will have a great afternoon on the slopes. Our server, Meghan, was a delight. Every time we've been here it's been great service. Just discovered the slippers on this visit and it is so nice to slip off the ski boots midday. Well worth the splurge.

We were here in the summer and had the place almost all to ourselves (at least until a Japanese tour group arrived). Great view from the deck, there are not a lot of options once you get off the gondola as there is very little hiking that's not steep uphill/downhill in one order or another. Best to chill at the Cliff House with a cheese fondue and a local brew. Our server did his level best to protect the sterno underneath the fondue from the steady breezes, resorting to all sorts of structures built with menus. Alas, it was a lost battle, but we still very much enjoyed our meal as well as the view.

The food was the best I had in Stowe. The view was lovely, and the atmosphere was peaceful. Our waitress was very friendly and made our lunch very enjoyable. I would love to return here the next time I visit Stowe.

Views unlike any other I have seen before. The gondola ride to the top of the mountain is very smooth and so fun! You can see the beauty of The Long trail without having to complete it! The cheese platter is nothing short of delicious with artisan cheeses and fruits. Definitely will be back for a full meal.

I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the Cliff House. Usually, these places are a tourist trap and a money suck, because when you're at the top of a mountain and it's freezing and windy outdoors, you're going to pay $20 for re-heated chicken nuggets and you're going to like it. Well, thank God the Cliff House isn't that. It's a classy restaurant at the top of the Stowe gondola, providing amazing views in a rustic-chic setting. We were a large party and lucked out in getting a table on the front porch so we could gape at the changing foliage and sunshine. The prices were a little high, and I was -again- suspicious that we were getting taken for a ride, and would pay $25-$30 for miniscule entrees dressed up with fancy names. Again, I was happily proved wrong with the generous portion sizes and the high quality of the menu items. I wasn't so hungry so I had a bowl of the butternut squash bisque, which was amazingly creamy without being overly sweet, and I shared the Vermont cheese board. The cheese portions were pretty meager, but it was a unique variety which I appreciated. The service, though a little sparse at times because of the big crowd, was always responsive and friendly. Just because we were a big group, our server never tried to up-sell us on anything just to get a bigger tip. We felt comfortable enjoying our lunch and then sipping our tea and coffee, and never felt rushed to give up our table. I could totally understand how people could have a wedding reception here! Though coming up the gondola could be a bit tricky.

On the phone they told us they served lunch until 4pm. I made the trek up the mountain, parked, got the gondola up, arrived at the doors at 2:40 and... they were closed! The sign at the door said lunch was from 11 - 3pm. But apparently they're open from 11 to sometime before 2:40. Left hungry and bummed.

I give Cliff House a lower rating for the service. We sat at the bar waiting for a table while three tables sat empty, just waiting to be cleaned. We were seated about 15 minutes later and ordered right away. Good thing, because who knows how long we would have waited to order. Our waitress poured us some water and ran out leaving me with just half a glass... She never came back to top me off or fill our glasses again. In fact, she never came back at all. Someone from the kitchen brought us our food. As for the food, it was spectacular. We ordered the bread sampler for an appetizer. Bread was still warm and the butter was fresh. I had the grass fed burger and it was cooked perfectly. My girlfriend had the Monte Cristo and said it tasted great and was full of flavor. If we'd had a more attentive waitress, I would have given a higher rating. If you're just looking for a quick, but delicious bite on top of the mountain without any service, Cliff House is your place. If you're looking to get your money's worth of service, ski to the bottom of the mountain and treat yourself to the cafeteria in the lodge. You'll only have yourself to blame for slow service!

The Cliff House Restaurant at the Stowe Mountain Resort is an amazing all-in-one wedding venue. You park at the base and ride the gondola up to the top of the mountain-- how cool is that? It's about a 25 minute gondola ride over a ski trail and waterfall. Then your ceremony is out on a terrace overlooking the valley with mountains above you-- and it faces west which means spectacular sunset. Then you can pose for pictures under the gondola or out on the terrace surrounded by all that gorgeous Vermont-ness. Afterward you and your guests are seated at gleaming wooden tables for some pretty darn good food. I'd knock off half a star if I could because although the website says that it seats 100, it doesn't mention that in order to do so and also have dancing, you have to clear a few tables off the dance floor. So when dinner is over 20-30 guests lose their seats. But then you dance all night and the moon rises over the same terrace you were married on. It's pretty darn rad, especially if you're a ski bum. Even if you did get dressed in the inelegant 'warming room.'

It's not often you get an outstanding view atop a mountain, fine dining service and very, very good food, while still wearing your ski boots but Cliff House brings it all and delivers! Step off the gondola, without even touching the snow, and step into the dining room where the view is amazing and the food is almost as good (the view is that amazing). We had lunch there this week. My wife had the curry pumpkin soup which was very well made and I had a terrific, smoked trout salad that made for an excellent light lunch. While we didn't partake of the bar, I did look over the wine list and to their credit, it is a better list than most of the good restaurants down in town. If you are in Stowe and have a ski pass, don't pass on lunch at The Cliff House!

July 2010. Had Lunch for two adults and two children and the food was sublime. The service was excellent, and I had the greatest white wine ever (unfortunately forgot to note the name, but it was a very buttery California Chardonnay). I loved that everything was cooked in a very healthy manner, even the pizza for the children was high-class, served with carrots, and a home made lemonade (no corn syrup). The view, of course, is unrivaled. I'm definitely going back.

Today I want and visit Stowe for the 1st time so I was alittle excited because I hear such great things about the sking resort. We took the cable car all the way up to the top of the mountain and the view was ok. The restuarant was the only one up there plus the menu look decent so we took our chances. The food was sub-par and they keep saying it the best thing they have in the house was the grass feed vermont beef so we did order a plate of that and also the 2 bake cheese souffle w/cranberry & pear salad. The food came out pretty commericalize and the beef was way overcook when I told them I want it medium rare. The cheese souffle was very bland but it look better then it tasted. The worst part of the experience was the service. They didn't know anything when i asked them a simple if I can let the kitchen know that I wanted medium rare. The guy look blank and couldn't say anything. Our waiter Sean was very unfriendly and useless until the bill came and all the sudden he asked us if we need anything else. The bottom line is this is one of the worst service I ever had and please proof me wrong but I doubt this place can LOL I rather eat at McDonald hehe

Made it to one of the tasting dinners at Cliff House. Definitely felt like it was a once in a lifetime opportunity. The food was good - not the best tasting menu I've ever had, but good overall. The wine pairings were also good. Again, just good. I wouldn't say the pairing blew my mind with how the flavors complemented the tasting menu - but all were drank. The best part was the view from the top and then riding the gondola down after dinner. It was like floating in the middle of a pitch black landscape with stars overhead. The gondola is included in the price of dinner so for some it can be a multiple bucket list evening!

Not the place to visit in rhe middle of the day. I've been to a gazillion resorts and never had to deal with such slow service and extra, extra high prices. Granted, i know that ski lodge food prices can be a lillttle high and i gladly pay it so i down have to brownbag lunch. But $18 burger, $4 bread(not hot, not fresh) basket and a $13 clam chowder is insane and it took literally twenty five minutes for food to come out! Grrrrr!

The view on the mountain is reason enough to eat here. And you will get away from the cafeteria crowds. The fondue and sandwiches were ok but the best thing we ate was their buffalo spring rolls. Sounds weird but soooooo worth the calories. I wish I could have gone back for just that.

After a morning of runs and absurdly cold Stowe weather, nothing beats a nice, warm environment and meal at Cliff House. It's a nice little spot at the top of the Gondola where you can relax, enjoy some nice views of the resort and Mt. Mansfield, and enjoy a bite. My family and I come here at least once per year, and they've never failed to be consistent in their offerings. The staff's always nice, service pretty quick, and food/drink pretty good. French Onion Soup: bang. Delicious, hot, and really flavorful. Definitely go this route if you want some good soup to warm the soul. Meaty Mac and Cheese: also delicious. It's a classic Mac 'n Cheese recipe with an addition of bacon and Vermont ham. Crispy finish on top. Delicious offering, but you'll be pretty full. I usually get the soup and some chili (which is also very good), paired with a Scotch or Bourbon to warm me up before heading back out for the afternoon session. Cliff House is a little pricey, and if you don't get there early enough, you won't get a seat. Their reservation system (if you can call it that) is a bit odd to me - sometimes, they take them, sometimes they don't. We always end up just walking in rather early and enjoying a bit of an earlier lunch anyway, so it works out!

As other people have said, the food isn't mind blowing but eating at this altitude after a gondola ride is pretty amazing! The restaurant is smaller than I expected but has a pleasant ambience and room to store your ski equipment if needed. Note that the gondola without a lift ticket is $$ but it is quite memorable! This was a must-visit during a stay at Stowe due to the vegan/vegetarian options (hard to find in the resort). They had a nice tempeh, miso and kale dish with wild rice, but I think the menu changes. Being able to eat vegan in such a location is great!

Would give 0 stars if I could. Terrible service. Hostess asked me to carry high chair for baby into the restaurant with me. Never have I seen a guest being asked to do that. Wait staff were chatting away nearby but it took 15 mins after sitting for someone to come to table to ask if they could help. Overall very unfriendly

Amazing views, great food and service = Awesome Experience! Eating on top of a mountain is just awesome. You take a $25 gondola ride up that's about 10 minutes long. It definitely adds up if you have a large group, but the only other option is to walk. The restaurant is warm and cozy. It gets chilly outside even during summer months, but they bring you blankets and you can also sit inside and still take in the view. I've always been happy with the food and service there. Their sandwiches have never failed us, servers are always eager to help and friendly, nice wines.... no complaints. This is a must visit place if you're in the area.

The food is excellent and the service was very friendly. We had the fondue as an appetizer, and it was delicious (and filling). The monte cristo came with syrup and used French toast for bread, unique and tasty. Prices are a bit high, but the view is nice. If you're not skiing, you need to buy a one trip gondola ticket for each person a ($25 each).

The food is 4 star worthy but the atmosphere and location is what truly bumps this place up to 5 stars. You cant beat the view and location at the top of the gondola especially when it is snowing outside. The cheese fondue was a little thin but still very good. The french onion soup here is among the best as well. The sandwiches are also usually a safe bet. I got the crab stuffed trout and realized I really just do not like trout. The crab stuffing and sauce was very good however. Service was great as always and they have a great selection of bottled beer as they do not have beer on tap here. Very good wine selection from what I have seen as well.

Come up the gondola on a day you are not hard core skiing and treat yourself to a nice sit down lunch to rest your legs. The menu is filled with fresh, local fares. My husband and I both split the maple roasted butternut squash soup and the open-faced Misty Knoll turkey sandwich. Both of them were delicious and it was plenty. The bread for the sandwich was this brioche-type bread which added to the taste and there was some bits of sausage in the stuffing. I was worried it would be heavy but it was not and added to the taste. We added a side of fries to that, why not, we are skiing today! Enjoy with a nice local beer and it will probably be your last run down but all well worthwhile. There are other lighter fares such as salads or you could share a cheeseboard. Service was excellent. You may need a reservation during the holidays. We did not have one but sat at the bar where you can enjoy the open kitchen.

If the rest of lunch was as amazing as the sweet potato soup, it would have been 4-5 stars. But the chicks. Sandwich and the Grass fed beef burger were over cooked and over charred.

4.5 stars with an extra .5 star for the breathtaking view. I've been here 3 times now, and it's been amazing each and every time. First of all, it's at the top of the mountain so the views are fantastic. Then of course, there's the food. Now usually, when I think ski resort food, it's really just a nicer cafeteria with inflated prices. The Cliff House is a laid-back yet classy place with a lot to offer. So I have to admit that the first time I went, I hardly ate anything because I didn't have much of an appetite that day (a rare occurrence...) However, the other couple with whom we went absolutely raved about the duck confit. My husband had the rib special and his only complaint was that the sauce was a little sweet, but otherwise, very tender. The second time, I had the lobster mac and cheese which was wonderful, and my husband finally tried the duck confit, which lived up to the hype from our first visit. Then the next day, we had the cheese fondue for two - made with otter creek copper ale. It was the perfect consistency and so flavorful. It came with bread, pepperoni, potatoes and apples, and they keep giving you bread until you're done with the cheese. It's the perfect place for a break from skiing in the middle of the day. If you go on the weekend, be prepared for at least a 15-20 minute wait. On weekdays, however, you'll have no problem getting a table.
