It truly kills me to do this after four such wonderful food experiences at Toast but my last trip proved to be too disastrous. Food wise Toast has been great and each time I brought someone here they loved it. The wait staff though they we not always on top of it were pleasant. I brought 4 people with me on Saturday, two newbies and 2 that I had dined with before. What transpired from the moment we sat down to the time we left was nothing short of embarrassing after all my toting of this place. First was the male server that came to take our drink order. They changed their craft drink offerings a few weeks ago but apparently have not "f-ing printed the new ones" as our server put it. Not exactly the kind of view /attitude that a server should be sharing with customers. We asked for a minute to make different drink selections. A few minutes later a different server came by to ask for our drink order. She told us the previous server had been cut for the night, okay fine. After we placed our drink orders with her however the first guy came back and said "did you hear the bad news I'm not your server anymore?" and then walked away. I did not find this necessary at all. When our server did come back to take our order she was not writing it down. Okay, I though as some people can/do memorize orders. Well half way through our party she then pulled out an order pad to start writing. This resulted in those of us that had already ordered having to repeat it again for her. The appetizers we placed were the Ahi Tuna, Perogie Nachos and the Cheetos Fried Veggies. The veggies, which I've loved in the past were lackluster this time. Overcooked and far less pieces or variety of vegetables from what I was used to. The tuna was okay, though the way it is described on the menu made me think it would be tuna on pieces of flatbread. What we got was slices of tuna and rolls of flat bread next to it. The Perogie Nachos were tasty though and the groups favorite of the three. The main entrees were the biggest problem of the night. Not just for one person in our party but all 5 of us which is just not normal. I ordered the fish & chips which our server said was a go-to draw for a lot of customers. It was super greasy and lacked flavor. Two of our party got the Rib Gouda Mac and were not happy with the less than cheesy mac. (I've had and loved the Crab Mac on a previous visit so I was shocked to see this mac was not the same.) The garlic-ranch turkey burger was not as impressive as expected but the big kick was the salmon my friend Jodi ordered. The kale and quinoa it was served on was very very salty and inedible, it had to be redone. We were also missing an order of their sweet potato tots that prompted a "oh yes that was ordered" from our server almost as if we'd accused her of not placing it when we really just wanted her to check on it. We were so deflated by the time the meal was done that we skipped dessert. I have to wonder if it was just an off night for the kitchen. All my previous meals here have been at lunch time. As great as my past experiences have been I can't justify leaving the 5 start review in place after this visit. I truly hope that the owners/manager of Toast will work with their staff and kitchen.

From the appetizer, to the entree, to the dessert, this place DID NOT cease to amaze!! The service was wonderful and even through the hour wait, the hostess was very attentive to the waiting patrons. I would definitely recommend this place for a nice night out!

Update. 2/15/14 The first time I visited Toast I was so thrilled. I wrote a 5 star review and raved about this place to my friends and family, so much so, that during a girl's weekend to Richmond we planned our entire dining schedule around going to this place that I love so much. Sadly, I will never recommend Toast to another person again. I was mortified at the service and the quality of food we received. Starting by five of us being put at a table for four, we made it work, but it certainly wasn't comfortable. We wouldn't have minded waiting for a table, but we were never offered another option. We were approached by a male server who wanted to take our drink order, one of us asked for a drink on the beverage menu and the response she was given was "we don't have that anymore, they changed the drink menu like 3 weeks ago but they haven't f'ing printed the new ones, so annoying" - uh, wow. Obviously he was joking and felt comfortable with us, but still, wow! A few more minutes went by and Angel, another server came by to get our drink orders. She took them and off she went. Shortly after that the same young man came over and said "did you hear the bad news, I'm not your server anymore, sucks to be you" and walked away. Angel came back to take our order. As we were ordering she was not writing anything down. After she got thru the first three people she took out her pad and started writing the remaining orders. She had forgotten the other orders by this point and asked again what we would like. We ordered three appetizers, the tuna, the perogie nachos and the cheeto crusted veggies (which I loved in my pervious visit), the tuna was ok, the nachos were amazing, and the veggies consisted of three pieces of zucchini, a carrot and two HUGE chunks of broccoli that were overly fried. Seriously, they couldn't have put a knife through that broccoli and made it bite sized? Our water bottle sat empty, even after we put it at the end of the table as a hint. Finally we just asked another server walking by to refill it. When dinner arrived - the two people who had ordered the Ribs and Mac were sorely disappointed at the very dry noodles that didn't have any cheese on them at all. I ordered the salmon with kale and quinoa. After the first bite I knew something was wrong. It tasted like an entire container of Morton's salt had been mixed in with my dinner. I thought it might have been me but all of my friends tasted it and agreed that my dinner was inedible. We flagged down our server who took it back to the kitchen and had them taste it too. She came back to tell me the batch of quinoa/kale made that day was done incorrectly and asked if it was okay if they substituted it with something else. 25 minutes later (after everyone was finished) the manager brought out my plate and said they would be taking 1/2 of the cost off our bill. Silly me, I thought maybe they should have removed the whole thing. Also, when the food was brought out originally we were missing an order of sweet potato tots, the response we got "oh yeah, they were ordered", well yes, we know that, we ordered them; they are not however on our table. She brought them out a moment later but honestly we wish we had never ordered them. They were undercooked and soggy, over half of them were left uneaten. The entire meal was disappointing and the staff didn't really seem to care. I don't know if it was the difference in the lunch and dinner service or what? Lunch here was really great; dinner was a total waste of time. We were looking forward to ordering dessert but honestly when it came time to order it, the five of us were totally over the experience and just wanted out of there. We should have just gone to the Mill on MacArthur.

Have been twice now. The first time was with a group of 4, the second time with a group of 9. Both times the food has been ok and both times food was delivered warm, not hot. Service my first time was decent but it was also around 4pm so it wasn't busy, second time was around 6pm and service was horrible and they seemed to be having a average to busy night. Who brings appetizers, salads and entrees all at the same time?!? Is it kitchen fault for sending it all at once or servers fault for not asking for salads and apps to get sent out. Either way, the management is no where to be found took keep an eye on these things. The Cuban Reuben is the only item I've enjoyed so far. The gouda Mac n cheese is bland, burgers decent, tomato bisque taste like baby food with cheese broiled on top. I may return, but will not go unless its a small group and if there's issues again, I'll gladly give up my seat to the pretentious hipsters who roam the RVA.

The hubby & I were looking for something new & different for dinner last night. Yelp! directed us to TOAST...& we're so glad they did! I loved the atmosphere & we were seated pretty quickly for a busy Friday night, especially in a college area. The beer selection was excellent, not having the "too many to choose from" menu was great! We had sausage white cheddar corn dogs with stone ground honey mustard dip for our app, hubby had the meatloaf with fresh veggies & mashed potatoes, & I had the Cuban Ruben (club style sandwich, half Cuban & half Ruben) with steak fries...all of which were sooo good! Can't wait to go back & try more of the menu!

I've been going to Toast since my senior year in college at UofR when they opened. It is a great addition to the neighborhood as it is consistently on point and creative for the West End. I'm a huge fan of their appetizers, salads and sandwiches. Their entrees have never wowed, but the Thai Chicken Salad, Bacon Gouda Sliders and truffle fries are enough to earn Toast 5 stars. I have never had bad service in all my times there. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a fun spot in the West End.

I LOVE TOAST! I have been a total of maybe 4 times. Once when we lived in Va Beach and were visiting, and 3 times while living here in Richmond. Best believe that even when we move back to Va Beach in a few weeks, when we come back to visit Richmond, TOAST will be one of the places we choose to dine at again. The food is delicious! During our most recent visit, last week, my boyfriend, his best friend and fiancee ate here for dinner. I had the Sunday special - amazing. Grilled Chicken on a bed of crispy hash browns with country gravy! Perfection, seriously. We also had Cheetos coated veggies and fried pickles for our appetizers. I have also had the following at Toast - Brioche French Toast (yummy), and my most favorite thing I've had here so far is the Monterrey Benedict (only available during brunch. It's an english muffin topped with turkey, fresh lump crab, avocado, poached egg, cilantro, and hollandaise. Deelish! I wish they served brunch all the time! :) Definitely one of my favorite spots to eat at in Richmond. Eat here, you won't regret it.

Went for midday brunch and restaurant was very busy with a 30 minute wait. Once seated service was great. We had a chance to look at the menu so we ordered right away. Coffee was never empty Food was moderately priced and I think perfectly sized. I tried the chicken and the egg and was worried it would be too big and heavy but it was not. The biscuit is crispy and not like your typical biscuit, the chicken breast was cooked well and sunny side up was perfect. The gravy was kind of lost in the mix and I wish there was a little more of it. The hash browns were seasoned well and I agree the ketchup is good with a sweet cinnamon taste (I'm not usually a ketchup fan). Friend had the mexi-burger and he really liked it. Fries were a little lukewarm though. We both cleaned up our plates. Would love to come back to try more although it is a little out the way for city dwellers.

Go here when you have time to relax over your meal. You want to savor everything served to you. Crisp fried pickle chips and jalapenos, Pierogi nachos full of fantastic flavors, slightly sweet polenta corn dogs, crab mac n' chz chock full of crab meat, Louisiana "Lobster" roll is die for, crisp, fresh Thai wrap... I could go on and on, they're all great. Most notable is the quality and freshness of ingredients, the clever use of texture, and play on sweet vs. heat. Service is friendly and reasonably paced. Bar is well stocked and boasts a good variety of happy hour specials. Place is usually packed at the expected times. Save room for dessert--it's always changing, but always delicious!

Toast is one of my favorite breakfast spots in Richmond. Unlike what the name says, they serve more than just toast. They also serve a lunch and dinner, but that is not the main meal. When it comes to breakfast at toast, they have a variety of options. They serve a wonderful french toast with a homemade whipped topping, and wonderful bacon and eggs. Personally, I recommend french toast and bacon, and it is what I almost always get when I come for breakfast. The dinners at toast are not as good, but the deserts are delicious. I had a burger, but it was not very satisfying. Also, I had the Tiramisu, which was one of the best Tiramisus that I ever had. I recommend this place over many other breakfest spots. It is not the fastest, but it is delicious.

Great little restaurant and bar. They have neat food options. Brussels sprouts are good, as are the veggies and side dishes. I've been plenty of times and always had different but great food. Nice for after dinner drink, lunch, dinner or date night.

I heard good things about this place but my experience wasnt that good. I went on a weekend during lunchtime at which they only serve brunch. The hostess and waitress were nice and the noise for being brunch time was tolerable. What disappointed me was that my food came with cheese on it when I asked for no cheese and the food was Luke warm and almost on the edge of being cold....side note, if your food is late and cold it's the servers fault, if the food is late and hot, it's the kitchens fault....Besides my food being at a bad temperature, it did have a good flavor. Even though my experience was not that good, the menu is appealing enough to give this place one more chance.

Toast lies at the intersection between good prices and great food that every restaurant should strive for. My husband, man candy and I came in for a west coast breakfast (ie 1230pm) on a Saturday and were immediately seated... Near a baby shower. Thankfully there hostess was happy to move us away from the large group and although it took three tries to find a table that would afford us some peace and quiet after a very long two days, we were happy where we ended up. I don't give five stars unless a place is seriously the best it can be. Five star places are rare and you're lucky to find them. Toast is actually pretty damn close all things considered. Their service and location leaves a little to be desired but their food is delicious, filling, and cheap. I had the green eggs and ham. Pesto hollandaise over thinly sliced ham and eggs with hash browns clearly made with all the delicious stuff on the flat top... Delicious. And toast, of course. Man candy had the chicken and biscuits. Oddly, none of the eponymous toast came with it. His chicken was a bit on the small side but delicious and crispy. Biscuits made me wonder if they are made from scratch in house or frozen. All in all 24 bucks for two big breakfasts and coffee is a great deal where we come from. Great job, toast. We wish you weren't 2500 miles from our house.

First visit was yesterday. Joined my sister in law for breakfast and she raved about this place based on a previous visit. I was pleased at first by the quick seating and attentive service. However, that changed quickly... I asked our server for a menu item and asked if onion and tomato could be added to it. At which point she stated "I dont think so". I gave her an alternate item and said "if they are not willing to add the items then you can put this in instead". Not sure if she ever asked, but she came back and stated "the kitchen said they could not do that, so you are getting the other item"... Seriously!!! I asked for onion and tomato from a restuarant that makes everything "fresh"... VERY disappointed!

So, my experience here was absolutely amazing. I went here to celebrate a friend getting a new job and I fell in love. This place is a little gem, tucked away in a shopping center and I want to go back immediately! The atmosphere is that of an upper-middle class bar with a nice local feel. The server we had was nice and personable and quite knowledgeable about the menu. We ordered the Pierogi Nachos but got the seafood ones instead. As we ate it, we realized that it wasn't ours... the waiter came back and we told him and he laughed, apologized, and brought us out the one we ordered. Even though we did finish the first plate, he didn't charge us for it - I thought that was lovely; some places would charge you for both even though it was the cook's mistake so knowing that they didn't do this makes this place on the top of my list of places to go back to. I also ordered the ahi tuna and Caesar salad. The tuna was perfectly seared on the outside and a perfect raw on the inside. And the plating was beautiful! The salad was quite tasty and the interesting part was that they grilled the actual lettuce. I've done this before at home, but not too many places that I've been to do this as well. The dressing was good and there wasn't an overabundance of it which I was quite thankful for. I'm coming back for brunch - I've heard it's pretty awesome. :)

Love this fresh atmosphere with its earthy colors and decor. Located in an outdoors shopping center, the open space with booths and purse hooks were perfect for a birthday brunch. Everything (and I mean everything) looked amazing on the menu. Add on the winning service and awesome food-to-price ratio, we've got a definite addition to the "must revisit" list. Recs: 1. Shrimp and Crab Nachos ($13): a piled medium plate of 5+ shrimp and shredded crab along with avocado and cheese atop freshly made tortilla chips. Delish to the max and great to share amongst 3-4 diners. 2. Veggie Bennie ($10): a somewhat interesting mix of herbs burger with a poached egg plus hollandaise. A bit bitter, but satisfactory. 3. The Chicken and the Egg ($10): a Southern food delight of well-fried chicken smothered in gravy plus hashbrowns. Fairly delicious though the housemade ketchup was a bit too sweet for this hearty dish. 4. Grapefruit juice: not as sweet as expected 5. Pineapple juice: refreshing with just enough of sweetness Overall, highly recommended for a brunch visit with friends or family. Kids eat free on Saturdays.

I am NOT generally a fan of strip-mall dining, but Toast is pretty great. We were greeted and seated immediately (without a reservation). Our server took care of our order immediately and timed service perfectly. The food came out quickly (even though the entire restaurant was full), and my Cuban Reuben with sweet potato tots was on point. My friend said her Thai salad was great, too. Not too hot, either, which she was afraid of since it has wasabi in it. I liked that the menu was big enough, but not too big. Outside of the Cuban Reuben, there were two other dishes on there that I could've easily gone for. The variety is also good. Someone planned the menu very well. The decor is nice, too. Toast would fit in perfectly in the Fan.

Dinner for 4. I wanted to try their Toast Burger...It was fine. Not a top 10 but very good. My review is probably affected by our 40+ min wait. Service was certainly acceptable after we were seated. The bacon on my burger was terrific as was the meat. I can't say I'd ever wait even 20 mins to go back, however giving credit where credit is due, they were packed! I think part of the reason they are so busy is price....they are inexpensive for what you get. They still got my vote even tho I would have eaten just about anything after 40 mins. You'll enjoy the food. The other food ordered, crab cakes and esp the meat loaf. I was told it was excellent.

Beer, bourbon and cozy atmosphere in the middle of a strip mall. I would not thought this place would be what it is. Glad I had a friend to show me the way! Will definitely be back for a beer and some nibbles.

We went for brunch. I ordered a Bloody Mary. Not bad, I did almost order a vodka floater. Seemed like a lite poor. My meal was the Cleveland Bennie. A take on eggs benedict with a biscuit, bacon, poached eggs, and sausage gravy. The egg was cooked perfect and the biscuits were great, soaked up the yolk and gravy just right. That being said I could have used a little more gravy. For my 2.5 year old We ordered a kids egg meat and potato. Came with scrambled eggs sausage and hash browns. It was enough food for an adult. All of it was great too. He certainly had his fill. Overall pretty kid friendly. Waitress offered to put our sons order in early which was appreciated. One improvement is the wait staff general approach. They tended to tend to one immediate need at a time which is ok but I found myself wanting something but she ran off before I could get her attention. We had a fairly big group with 6 adults and 4 kids. But I still would have expected a little more time before leaving the table.

I loved the menu when I read it so I brought my husband for a date last night. We had a little wait but were seated by a cheerful hostess and served by a very nice waiter. We ordered cheeto crusted veggies as an appetizer, rockfish fetucini and watermelon tacos as entrees and paid a bill of around $40-not bad. My husband loved the rockfish. The fried veggies were awful. Swimming in oil, it appears that they were never drained coming out of the fryer, It was really fried zuccini as there were no other vegetables, but that was okay; the cooking oil that actually dripped off the fork and stood in a pool at the bottom of the serving dish let me know that someone cooking last night did not give a damn. I was eager to try the watermelon taco. There are not alot of vegetarian "wow" dishes in Richmond and I hoped this would be one. It was shockingly bad. There were rice and beans with the taco, which ended up being all I could eat but these were made carelessly, obviously canned beans and that fat-grained Uncle Ben's kind of rice that seems more of a gesture than food. But I was thankful for them nonetheless because the tacos were That Bad. You need watermelon with some flavor to handle grilling and these rectangles probably started off flavorless because when they were placed on whatever greasy grill was in use last night, they soaked the flavor right up. It was an unpleasant, oily smoky taste, no watermelon flavor. The watermelon was in a small limp flour tortilla, that tasted exactly like it tastes when you take a tortilla out of the bag before frying or baking it and taste it to see... raw and limp and flour-y, There was some lettuce, and tomato and avacado on the top of the watermelon that was okay. What a disapointment. I am going to try Toast one more time, because someone who makes a menu like that must care about food, and maybe this was one lousy or lazy cook. Maybe that cook will go back to Applebees and the person(s) who really cares about what they put on a plate will be at the stove. I hope so, I would love to eat a meal there worthy of desert because that honey mascarpone donut sounds like something I should check out.

Friendly, Fast service! We had a bit of a time crunch, but were seated and served quickly. Let's see what I can remember....TIlapia Tacos, Tasty. Vegetable Poutine, ok..I'm a bit of a dick when it comes to poutine. Fried Pickles (be careful, there are some fried jalapenos thrown in there. I ate the meatloaf. Pretty damn good, was served with some fresh veggies and mashed sweet potatoes. No time for drinks, had to rush back to work.

Trendy restaurant. The fiance and I tried it out for brunch. He got the chicken & egg - southern fried chicken biscuit with sausage gravy...HELEEERRRR...yes please. I really wanted that, but we decided to go splitsies and I got the bunchiladas. They were definitely good, but I just loved the chicken and egg sandwich. Hashbrowns were decent, but the homemade ketchup was a little too sweet. Service was OK. Will return for dinner/lunch.

Closer to 1.5 stars I hate to come back on Toast with a worse rating, but I returned here recently and had an awful experience. When the service causes your entire meal and evening to suffer, it should be called out. I came here with my mom and wife for dinner on a weeknight. Our waitress was rude, dismissive, absent, and generally terrible all night. When I asked if the beer menu was current, I was told it was, then she came back in five minutes to tell me what I ordered was no longer available. When I asked for another beer, she said she wasn't sure if that was available, either. I finally picked one that worked and she brought it back. Two of the three of us ordered drinks and the other just said that she would have to think about it. When the waitress came back with drinks after the above back and forth, she didn't bother asking the other what she wanted, but rather pushily asked if we were ready to order. From that point on she would bring glasses and set them on the table and walk off and offered no help or recommendations when asked (except for a "That is actually pretty good" when we quizzed her about a couple of the desserts). Here's the food, though I will acknowledge that these opinions could be affected by the horrible service. - App - we had the crab and shrimp nachos. The chips were very good, but the toppings were just okay. - Main dishes - my wife had the Sloppy Joseph based on some Yelpers' recommendations. It was just okay. The chorizo flavor did not come through. I had the rib mac and cheese. The rib meat was very tender and falling off the bone. This was the highlight. - Dessert - we shared the chocolate stout beer cake. It was extremely dense and chocolaty with a nice cream cheese icing. Very solid dessert, and "actually pretty good." With Estilo right down the shopping center, I don't see why I would ever come back to this place.

I think this might be one of my new favorite brunch spots. Rustic and warm decor. Friendly staff, decent prices. & delicious food! I got The Chicken & The Egg. It's fried chicken on a biscuit topped with an egg and gravy sauce. The chicken was crispy and the gravy sauce was to die for! It was such a great combination along with hash browns on the side. My friend had the French toast and it was a bit too sweet. Overall, I would definitely come back.

The food is good but not great. I would go back there except they were not at all welcoming when we went for a return visit for lunch with our toddler. We were informed that there are only 2 tables where they are willing to put a toddler, and they were occupied by groups without children. They informed us the wait would be 40 minutes and suggested we wait outside. They would not let us sit at another table. II am not someone who thinks children have to be welcome at every restaurant but this was lunch at a restaurant in the west end. Needless to say, the food was not good enough to outweigh this experience.

Wanted to love this place since it's close by in an area where more restaurants would be welcome. Was sadly disappointed especially after all the rave reviews. Food was under seasoned and overcooked. Friend had the Mac & cheese short rib that was probably the best dish on the table. Service can sometimes win me over, but it was fairly lackluster as well. Super cute interior and menu looks like it would be good, but for the price (ex- overcooked rockfish @ $21) there are better options out there. I will likely give it another try to see if it was just an off night, or head to the bar which is a cute space.

Strawberry basil mojito and veggie corn dogs? Yes, please! Those were the two standouts from my first visit to Toast months ago (I can't promise they currently offer the cocktail, but if so, then do it). My visit Saturday evening prompted me to finally pen the review I've been meaning to write! As a pescatarian who loves fake meat, there was no way I was passing up those veggie corn dogs. Plus, I've eaten them multiple times and loved them each go 'round so they're kind of a no-brainer for me at this point. They're served with two sauces - a housemade ketchup and a bbq aioli - and although they don't even need sauce in my opinion, the aioli is completely drool-worthy. I always share them with at least one dining companion, since I need to save room for my meal, too. They do come in a meat version for all you carnivores out there, so give them a go! The menu is pretty darn extensive, so you might have a tough time deciding what to order. Don't be overwhelmed, there's not really a bad choice on there. On Saturday I actually decided to forgo the menu completely and opt for a special: blackened watermelon tacos topped with toasted coconut. Served with pico de gallo, avocado, cotija cheese, and sides of beans and rice, this was insanely inventive. And absolutely, 100% worth ordering. I might, in fact, try to recreate this one at home. As a total watermelon junkie, I can't believe I've never thought to blacken the fruit! Well, I suppose I can believe it, since most minds wouldn't think to be that creative... but I'm thrilled to add another way to eat watermelon to my taste preferences. I actually ordered it without the cheese, but I have no doubt that it would only add another positive flavor fusion to the mix. Oh, and who doesn't love wine on tap?? One of my favorite elements of Toast. That, and the amazing attention to detail and yummy cuisine.

This was my first time here. I had the meat lovers omelette and it was excellent. I sat at the bar and the service was friendly and reliable. I recommend this place if you're looking for a great brunch place. It's a little loud due to the popularity and good food but it's worth it.

I came to Toast for lunch since I was working only a few blocks away. The restaurant was fairly busy for lunch, and I was seated at the final remaining table (although the bartender tried really hard to get me to sit at the bar ;) ). My server was friendly overall, although he did kind of disappear during the middle of my meal (I think he was busy since he was managing so many tables). The restaurant is very tavern-like in my opinion with the dark wood, but it is still fairly bright due to the large windows upfront. As for the food, I ordered the pot roast poutine. The poutine was tasty, although way too salty for me. I really didn't think the fries needed to be salted given all the gravy. I also had a cup of the fish chowder, which was overcooked (the dairy protein had coagulated and separated from the liquids, which usually indicates over-boiling). I ordered the nutella cheesecake for dessert, which wasn't that nutella-tasting, since there was only chocolate drizzled on top, and MAYBE some nutella incorporated into the crust. Overall, I had a good lunch. I was slightly disappointed though since it did not quite meet my expectations; I would love to come back and try their brunch.

I've been back here something like seven or eight times [which essentially never happens because I Try to go new places in Richmond since we have so many] sometimes for meals, sometimes for dessert and a drink, once actually to both celebrate my birthday and watch the World Cup final which was grand. The food is unfailingly delicious, both for dinner or lunch and for brunch, the service is friendly, the pricing remains reasonable [which is not to say I'm not capable of overspending, I assure you] and I still love the vibe, which reminds me of another favorite gastropub out of town.

10000000 times yes! The salmon-dill burger with sweet potato tots was positively divine, and I got a veggie quiche to go. This place was everything I had hoped it would be, and I can't wait to come back and try the Rachel or the omelettes or the salads or the fish and chips or any other manner of amazing sounding food on their menu! Go here! Go here, now.

Great first experience at Toast. I'm a big meatloaf fan so I was excited to see they offer it two ways (sandwich or plate). I went with the sandwich. It showed up with a sizeable piece of meatloaf with great flavor and a nice crispy crust to it. It came on toasted brioche, homemade ketchup, cheese and fried onions. Every bite was perfect. I opted up for the Parmesan truffle fries (you should too). They come with shaved Parmesan petals, so you definitely know it's there. The person serving me at the bar even went back into the kitchen to bring me a cup of their aoli to dip my fries in. It didn't come with my meal (so he definitely went out of his way) and his recommendation was dead on. Really nice when places like this make the extra effort. Will definitely be back to try more of their excellent beer list.

Stopped at Toast for lunch on a Saturday. Hosts were fantastic and personable and the wait was about 15 minutes in the middle of the day. Good beer selection with a good bit of local brews. The shrimp and crab nachos was certainly not a pretty dish but was delicious with a serious pile of lump crab meat and chunks of shrimp. My wife had a decent salad and I ordered the sundries tomato and spinach burger on brioche. A very average veggie burger with great sweet potato tots. I think it's a bit overpriced for average dishes, but the right price for the nachos. I'll give them a try again because they have a few items I'd like to try. My waitress was no good but the hostess more than made up for her terrible service.

This used to be City Limit and is now just a pricier version. This is located right next to U of R and seems a little on the fancy side to attract college students. Food and service were fine, but not something I'm dying to go back to.

A great restaurant and terrific atmosphere. Service is excellent and food superb. A gem tucked away in the Village shopping center. Only one request: a few other options for those who don't want to eat meat. Salads are fine but perhaps a tofu option for the protein in salads, wraps and such.

Hubby had the hash and I had the biscuits and gravy. The hash was perfect. I wish I had a little more gravy but the biscuits were tender and wonderful. The best part of the meal were the donuts. Service was good but the waitress almost talked us out of the doughnuts. She asked if we still wanted them even though they would take extra time. They're worth the wait.

This place is amazing. I have been to this place like 50 times, given how close to the UR campus it is. The food here never disappoints. Their ketchup is specially made in house and it was amazing. There's a ridiculous wait during weekends though.

I love this restaurant.. I've been there twice and will definitely go back.. Both times I got the salmon and it was so so delicious and fresh.. The shrimp and crab nachos were different but very tasty.. It's a must try.

I've been to toast a few times and never have I experienced bad service like this. First of all the order was a burger and a panini, which should be relatively quick to make. We waited 50 minutes until we asked the waiter what was taking so long and she said that it should be out within a few minutes. Then we waited another 15 minutes before we asked the waiter for our check. The waiter told us to wait for the manager to pick up the tab. Instead the manager insisted we wait but I refused. So we went back and forth until we finally agreed upon doing a take out order. When the manager came back with our take out food she asked if we pay for the 1 drink we ordered. Really? so now we are waiting for the check to come back. Thankfully the waiter came back saying we were not going to be charged. in conclusion, this place sucks at service. Manager was terrible and never apologized or explained what took so long. The food wasn't good. Burger wasn't cooked the way I wanted and panini was half way toasted. Not coming back nor will my friends after I tell them my bad experience.

I went back for my second time and it was amazing . I ordered the Estilo's Chifrijo which was excellent altho they put too many black beans in it. Even with there being a bit too many beans, it still had some amazing flavors going on. That particular dish is not a lot of food so if you are really hungry then either get an appetizer first or get something like the Cuban Reuben which is much more food . I wish I had seen the dinner special menu first. There were a few things on there I would rather tried but I'm still happy with what I ordered . We had nanner pudding and the mandarin orange cake which we both shared , both were very good . They are not the most decadent desserts but they are nice quality and taste good . This has become my favorite place to eat in the West End and I will continue to go back at least once a month .

Everything we ordered was absolutely delicious. We started with the pimento cheese wontons. I had the steak and frites and my husband had the ribs with Mac and cheese. We split the chocolate cake with orange buttercream. Awesome meal from start to finish and we will definitely be going back. Also, good ambiance and music.

Atmosphere was very nice, but I have to say I was a little disappointed in the food. Ordered a blackened shrimp and mango salad. Presentation was good, it really looked delicious. It was pretty bland though and some of the shrimp were not cooked through. Dressing was not great and pretty watery. Friend ordered a sloppy Joseph, lamb and chorizo sloppy joe type sandwich, and she did not care for it at all. Service was initially good but once we received our food the server did not come by to check on us and see if we needed anything or how our meal was. Salad dressing had spilled all over the table and it remained there throughout the meal. It wasn't that busy. Also be aware that it is the same menu for lunch as it is for dinner. Kind of strange. Probably would not eat here again as I can get a better salad elsewhere for the money.

I really enjoyed my first experience at Toast, and especially appreciated all of their gluten free offerings! The crab cakes were fantastic and practically 100% crab. The Cheetos-fried vegetables were really fun, too. I'll definitely be back again.

After leaving NOVA in the dust for a girls weekend, we made plans to go to Toast - one of Jodi C. & Leah S.'s favorite spots in Richmond. We heard nothing but great things about this place & were all very excited to give it a try. As a group we agreed that arriving after the dinner rush would probably be a good idea, so around 9pm we walked into Toast. My first impression was of the dang drapery hanging at the doorway. Completely unnecessary and causes the host stand area to feel very cramped. Once inside though, the place looks so lovely in the evening - dimly lit and cozy. Our group of 5 was seated in a booth meant for 4. Not very comfortable, but we made it work. If we had been given the option, we probably would have agreed to wait for a bigger table. Unfortunately, that proposal was never made. As some of my friends have already mentioned, the first server to take our initial drink orders made some jokes about the drinks we wanted not being available anymore & Toast not yet switching over to their new drink menu for some "f'ing" reason. I appreciate that he felt comfortable with us and his jokes did not bother me personally. However, I think it wasn't appropriate and obviously could easily offend customers. By the end of our meal and overall experience, it just ended up being another notch in the "not so great" column for Toast. (Note: Craig H., don't waste your time sending me a message as you did with the others in our group. Most of us in the group are Yelp Elites so we know the weight of our words - true accounts of our many dining experiences. Maybe in the future you will remember YOUR WORDS and provide more professional service.) A new server, Angel, came over after a few minutes, re-taking our drink orders since our previous server got "cut" for the evening. She did so with ease and left us to contemplate food orders. When she returned, she started mentally taking our orders. Halfway through, she decided she need to write it all down - causing the first few people to recount what they wanted. Annoying, but not an end-all. After all the entrees were delivered someone in our group pointed out that they were missing an order of sweet potato tots that they requested with their meal. Our servers response: "Yes, it was ordered," and walked off. Well, YES, we know it was ordered... and it should have been delivered. You know, before asking "is there anything else I can get you"! After initially sampling our dishes, it was pointed out that one of the entrees was so salty it was impossible to eat. Angel replied "Well when one chef puts seasoning in, sometimes the other chef doesn't realize it..." Blah, blah blah. It simply does not matter the excuse - it just needs to be fixed. Honestly, even though only one dish was sent back to the kitchen, none of us were happy with our meal. My food selections Appetizer: Pierogi Nachos - "crispy bbq bacon, pork belly over hand cut potato chips, cheddar-jack, grilled cabbage, sour cream". I actually enjoyed this dish and would order it again, IF I ever give Toast another chance. Not sure why this its called "pierogi" nachos though? Entree: Rib Gouda Mac - "bbq baby back ribs over smoked gouda mac 'n cheese, crispy fried onions". Ribs were decent but meat was a bit overcooked. The mac 'n cheese was dismal - lots of mac and very little cheese. In fact, after only eating half of mine of my entree, I gave up. In fact, I spent the rest of the night feeling sick and trying not to throw up. As for dessert, I never heard an offer for it. But it didn't matter anyway because no one in our party wanted to be there any longer or endure anymore food/service mishaps. We were just ready to get the hell out of there. What a wasted evening!

I love this place. It so close to home, I can not believe I didn't discover it sooner! Been here with family and friends at least 4 times for dinner and brunch once. No disappointments yet! Our favorites are their burgers and the truffle fries. The Frito pie is great. Their crab cakes, salads, the Sloppy Joseph...all good. Brunch is awesome. We love that they have wine on tap and a decent happy hour. The atmosphere is really nice too, very cool and cozy! The biggest downside is that they have limited seating and can get very busy. So your wait can be long sometimes. If you want to make reservations you have to do it more than 24 hours in advance. The lesser downside is consistency. Sometimes its better than others, but it has never been bad. My absolute favorite thing is the truffle fries and it is slightly disappointing when they come out half soggy. But they are still delicious and I always eat them until I'm about to pop, soggy or not.

So y'all know my obsession with fried pickles, right? And then there's the chips vs. spears where chips always win for me? Well, at Toast they have fried pickle chips AND jalapenos. Can you say, you had me fried? I have only been here for lunch and only had salads, so take that as you will. I HAVE had the pickles every time. The last time I was there I had a salmon salad special with pomegranate seeds that was amazing. In the past I have had both the Salmon Kale and the Thai Salad (where I substituted the ahi tuna). The are all HUGE so you won't go hungry with one of these. I will say that the burgers and specialty sandwiches seem to have too much bread. Each time my friends have ordered them they've left the buns off because the it overwhelmed the other ingredients. Also, avoid the cheetos fried veggies. They are plain weird. Not enough cheeto and the breading falls right off. Instead, double down on those fried pickles!

Food and service ok but not outstanding. I would say the atmosphere is a 4 - really cool; wait staff was a 3 or 4 - nothing done to go over and beyond but friendly and nice; and the food was a 3. I did notice when I walked in that our group of 35-45 year olds were probably the youngest people there at lunchtime. There was one table with college age students. Found that vibe interesting. The entrance at the hostess stand has a black velvet curtain that really doesn't make sense. I thought it might be hiding a really upscale decor but it wasn't. Decor is rustic/cool and funky/cute. Loved it. The food was just ok for me and same with the service. Granted, I am difficult - I'm allergic to shellfish, pine nuts/pesto, and moldy cheeses (blue, goat, feta, gouda ) so literally that counted out about 80% of the menu for me. I'm used to that, but I'm also used to having more choices on a menu at any restaurant. I get that it's a cool hip gastro pub, but not everything has to be made with completely unique and unusual types of ingredients. Seriously, not everything has to have blue cheese on it. I finally decided on the mozzarella caprese panini, which was good - toasted, warm and yummy with a side of greens for $8. Seemed like very little food for $8 but at that point, I was ready to eat my paper napkin. Service was fine except that it took about 35-40 minutes from ordering until we got our food. Appetizers were out and the group I was with loved them, but of course, I was allergic and couldn't try them, so I drank 3 iced teas to fill my belly while I waited. It was really busy at lunchtime. I'd avoid it during prime time and go at 11:30 or 1:30 next time. I may go again but honestly, since the items I can eat on the menu are so limited, I may not return and instead go to a restaurant that doesn't have goat/blue/gouda cheese on every single item on the menu.

I can't believe I've never reviewed Toast until now. I mostly frequent Toast for brunch... Something about the dark wood and low lighting is just perfect on a Sunday after a long Saturday night. The bartender whips up a flavor-filled Bloody Mary with just the right amount of kick. Like it extra-spicy? They'll throw in a shot or two of sriracha. Everything on their brunch menu sounds so delicious, I always have a hard time choosing what I want. The most recent visit I had the green eggs and hash. I waffled for a bit, because I really love traditional hollandaise, and I was scared the pesto would overshadow the hollandaise flavor. I was wrong. The warm, salty thinly sliced Smithfield ham sits on top of a bed of hot, crispy hash browns. That gets topped with two PERFECTLY (and I do mean perfectly.... whoever is doing it is getting it RIGHT) poached eggs and covered with pesto hollandaise. It was to die for, and I cleared the plate pretty quickly. Another favorite is The Chicken and the Egg. Southern Fried Chicken Biscuit, topped with sausage gravy and a sunny-side up egg. Hate to say it, but this is the perfect hangover cure. I've also had the traditional eggs benedict which is just as tasty, but now I opt for the more fun (less "safe"?) offerings on their menu. I've also stopped in for drinks and appetizers... I love their seafood nachos, and the Toast burger is also very tasty! On top of all that, the service is great, the staff is friendly. Toast is a win!

Today was the first time trying Toast. As we walked in the friendly host greeted us and sat us right away. The vibe in this place is very nice and relaxed. I loved the decor. Our server I believe his name was mike (sorry bad with names) was quick and attentive. Our drinks were always refilled and he always checked to see if we were doing ok. I ordered the lobster roll with a side of Parmesan fries. It was pretty good, the "lobster" is actually crawfish, but they did write that in the menu. There was plenty of meat in both rolls and the fries were plentiful also. There was also a side of ketchup that was really good and different than most places. It had a sweet BBQ flavor to it. But it was amazing. My friend ordered the southern pub club? Not sure of the exact name but it had fried catfish, pork belly and a spicy sauce on it. He got the side of sweet potato tots and it came out nice and crisp! Overall everything was great. I can't wait to come back and try the BLW and the watermelon tacos. Those look amazing!

Found this gem while in town for business. Everything we ordered was exceptional. Couldn't believe how much REAL parmesan was on the fries. The tots are delicious (not too sweet), but my favorite was the ribs n mac. Extensive whiskey/bourbon list and servers and hostess who were extra fun and personable. Best dining experience I've had in a very long time...

This is my fiancé's and my go-to restaurant in Richmond. The food is excellent and they consistently have a good rotation of quality craft beers, both on draft and in bottles/cans. It's great both for breakfast or lunch/dinner and serves what is basically high-quality comfort food. We've never had a bad, or even so-so experience here. We've ordered the Polenta Corn Dogs three separate times. They always turn out great with a nice, crispy shell (never soggy) and great flavor. They come with two sauces to dip in, one of which I remember being tasty, the other not so much. At breakfast, we've had the Bacon Fritters twice and they're really good for the first two fritters, but I usually get tired of them after that. If you come here with three or more people, this would be a great appetizer to order, because they really are delicious for the first two or so (and they're sizable too), but after that they taste just a little too rich for me. The aioli they come with is excellent as well. The Pierogi Nachos are solid. Great flavor and a really unorthodox appetizer; some of the chips were a little on the chewy side when we had them, but the great taste of all the ingredients more than make up for it. As for mains, the Huevos Rancheros are phenomenal, and probably the best item on the menu. I've had them both with and without chorizo (this and a few other experiences convinced I'm just not really a fan of chorizo's spices, but the HR w/ chorizo was good nonetheless, so if you like chorizo, you'll probably love this). All the flavors go together really well and just make it a great meal. I've also had the Brunchiladas which are similarly great, and the traditional eggs benedict which is basically the same thing as you'd get at any quality breakfast restaurant. For lunch/dinner, I really enjoyed the Poutine, though I think when I had it, the menu was different and it wasn't served with slow-roasted vegetables (I could just be remembering incorrectly). I've had the Rib Gouda Mac which I would recommend to others, but wasn't really my style. The ribs are good quality, fall-off-the-bone tender with a sweet barbecue sauce; the mac and cheese is nice and creamy and I'm a big fan of gouda which works well here. On the whole though, I just didn't like the two together, which is more of a personal thing, I think it'd be a good entree for others though and if you like these two, Toast does them well. The Beer Battered Fish & Chips were also really high quality and came out perfect, nice and crispy outside, soft and tasty inside. I've never ordered any of the fried items on their menu and have them arrive soggy or over-cooked, Toast is definitely consistently good with these. Overall, an awesome restaurant that's steadily grown in popularity. We used to be able to walk in anytime, but now I'd recommend making a reservation if you're headed there in the evening as it's really gotten popular lately.

Wow, so disappointed in this place. I had been wanting to try this place for a long time from what what I had read and heard. The food was very bland. I'll go as far as comparing it to your run of the mill chain restaurant. I ordered the ribs and they reminded me of the ones Golden Corral serves. Yes, those. Definitely could tell they have been sitting around for a while and just heated. The bbq sauce was thrown on top before serving. They were not cooked with the sauce so I basically got bbq sauce out of the bottle. The nachos seemed to have been prepared and heated in a microwave when the cheese melts but immediately becomes hard and tasteless. We were a group of 6 and everybody just about said the same. We were there for a very late lunch so it wasn't like the place was busy. Needless to say I won't be going back. Such a shame cause it looks like a cool place.

This is definitely my new favorite place. This time I was able to convince DH to come. He is always wary of places he thinks will be over-run with hipster types. He has decided this is his new favorite place too. The food, the service and atmosphere all make for a wonderful dining experience. On this visit, I had the Rockfish special. The fish was perfectly prepared. But what made this dish stand out was the black bean cake accompanying it. It was an unusual and fantastic combination that included coconut and spicy heat. DH had the Chef's Cut Steak Frites, which comes served over a caprese salad, which he loved. DH did remark about the lighting. He told me not to lean in too far as the overhead booth lighting was not flattering (remember the Seinfeld episode about the "Two Faced" Girlfriend - youtube.com/watch?v=TFeU… ?). But with food this good, who cares?

After checking Yelp, went back for brunch this past weekend. Better service, food is still not good. Hard, dry, thick, cracker-like biscuits with way too little gravy - try this, Pillsbury Grands and canned gravy, it would be so much better. I did let the waitress know and she was going to check with the kitchen. Also, don't put Tumeric in the black beans on the Juevos Rancheros, it's so off-putting, try it, I think you'll agree - I don't get the tumeric in Mexican at all, it's all you can taste. Water in teeny-tiny glasses and coffee were good.

Fried pickles. I've always been fascinated by these, have ordered them whenever I've seen 'em, and ... have always been disappointed. State fairs? Soggy, salty mess. Various diners across the south? Hideous. These guys have a fried pickle & jalapeño appetizer that's OUTSTANDING. Served with a sriracha aioli. Perfectly fried-to-order pickle chips that hold their light crusting, rubbing up against jalapeño slices in a tight little basket of awesome. With sauce.

so my wife and went here for the first time today to have some brunch. Great atmosphere, fantastic service, awesome food, and really not that expensive for the quality of what we ordered. I can promise that we will be coming back for brunch (they make the Bloody Marys pretty spicy!) and support a business that reminds us of our favorite places in Austin where we met.

I was excited to try Toast after reading all of the rave reviews and salivating over their menu. Unfortunately this was one of those cases where the menu sounded better than what was delivered. My husband and I went for brunch and managed to be seated right away. We ordered the bacon fritters which arrived within seconds of placing our order. I think I would have enjoyed these more had they been freshly prepared. But they had obviously been sitting under a warmer for awhile and were just unpleasantly chewy and greasy. Plus because the fritters came out so fast it made the subsequent wait for our entrees seem even longer. For entrees we ordered The Chicken and The Egg (fried chicken on a biscuit with sausage gravy and a fried egg over hashbrowns) and the Brunchiladas. The fried chicken was dry and hard to bite through. The biscuit disappeared into the gravy. The Brunchiladas were okay - they could have been better seasoned and offered more texture. I understand that scrambled eggs and beans covered in cheese sauce and guacamole is all soft in texture but even the hashbrowns on the side were mushy. I liked the atmosphere, service was pretty good. Several of the lunch items also sounded good so I may return for lunch to give Toast another try.

We got the Mozzarella Panini Caprese & the special which was call the Best Burger in the world. They were both good but the best was the Sweet potato tater tots with SWEET SRIRACHA AIOLI. AMAZEBALLS! I could seriously drink the stuff!

Really great food, and great drinks, too! I tried the bloody mary (which was delicious), and a peppery cocktail (forget the name) which was also really good! I ordered the french toast which was good, but the portion was small, and it would have been nice if it can with a side of fruit or something. The fries with truffle oil are amazing, and the ketchup is some of the best I've ever had (it looks homemade). Sweet potato tots are also good! We had a group of 9, and I think everyone enjoyed their meal-- that's pretty hard to do! I can't wait to come back and try something new!

Toast offers savory food, an accessible and non-pretentious location, a fun and variegated menu, quirky cocktails, and much more. My sister ordered the fried chicken Reuben and I ordered the cumin rockfish over a salad with a honey vinaigrette. We split Parmesan truffle fries between us and ordered the donuts with mascarpone dip for dessert. The menu here reminds me of Founding Farmers in the D.C. area. I'm already planning my return trip.

Whether we have a casual dinner with company; or want a cozy meal and drinks, this is a local favorite and our absolute go to place for dinner. The environment is warm, the staff is knowledgable, and the food is the perfect combination of home-cooked comfort crossed with creative nuance. Seasonal specials also consistently represent this establishment's commitment to unpretentious culinary innovation.

If I could, I would rate this place more like 3.5 stars. I came here for Sunday brunch with a friend. The place is situated in a small strip mall. There was plenty of available parking in the parking lot, so we didn't have to fight brunch parking lot traffic. We arrived at the restaurant around 11:45AM and were told that the wait would be about 35 minutes. We actually only had to wait about 20 minutes for a table, luckily. As we were starving, we had already taken a look at the menu while we were waiting so we could immediately order our dishes. The interior is more of a rustic one (picture drink menus place inside hanging metal pails). Our server was nice and readily available to serve us/fulfill our requests. The place is quite busy, but the noise volume isn't crazy loud where you can't hear one another. Most of the available dining areas are booths, and there is a smaller dining area that is more closed off for small parties (there was a baby shower going on next to us in that lil area). My friend and I opted to split the shrimp and crab nachos for an appetizer ($13). I was able to spot the shrimp easily, but where the crab was was still a bit of a mystery to me. I think I may have had some? The appetizer was overall decent and interesting for what was in it, but I'm not too sure if it was really worth the price and the amount of seafood that should have been included. I ordered the banana and chocolate chip pancakes for $9 + additional $2 for the Surry sausage. I was excited about Surry sausage because I thought it was a special kind of sausage...nope. Just tasted like normal sausage I could have gotten at IHOP. My pancakes were great though; I was well sated eating them as a standalone meal. My friend had the Green eggs and hash, and she let me sample some of it. The poached egg was great and cooked well. The portions for that dish was appropriate for a normal-sized stomach. We didn't have room in our stomachs to grab dessert, so we opted out. Our waiter was impressed that we both ate the entire appetizer and each of our meals though (us Asian girls have deceptively large stomachs, ha...credit our grandmothers and mothers' cooking for that). Overall this place would make a nice place to eat brunch. They have more interesting brunch items on their menu and not the standard Eggs Benedict or something. Is it the best brunch place I've been to? Nah. But I don't regret coming here, and I would recommend this to anyone who wants to try a new brunch place.

So far our favorite place in RVA! We've been a handful of times since moving here just a few months ago. There are so many things on the menu I want to try, but I keep getting the meatloaf. It is probably the best meatloaf I've ever had. Delicious and it's a big portion so there's always leftovers for lunch the next day. We also tried the corndogs which are amazing. Some people think corndogs are weird but I have always loved them, and Toast found a way to make classy corndogs. Yes please! Give us a week or two and we'll be back and I will try to venture away from the meatloaf.

Was looking for something healthy for a late lunch. I loved the pickled beet and salmon salad. The salmon was fresh, moist and a good size. The salad was all veggies no lettuce. A bowl of good wholesomeness. Hubby had turkey sandwich and liked.

Fantastic anniversary dinner! They were renovating while we were there so, it was a little uncomfortable but, the food was great.

Went here for dinner with a friend. The entrance is walled off with a curtain, i guess to give patrons some privacy? I think it's to provide more of an intimate/romantic ambience, which made it a bad idea to go here with my friend, who is a dude. But we made it too far out here, and decided to just go with it. i was trying to stay healthy so got the salmon salad, and he got the bison burger. In honesty, the salmon salad was good, but was something I could make. and i've also had better salmon, it was a little on the dry side. The bison burger was definitely better. I was glad i tried that, because it made the awkward night worth it. we also got the truffle fries, which looked good, but was pretty standard as well.

Why Jesus why? Why did I go to Toast again? I went for a late dinner on a Saturday night. When we walked in we were suddenly surrounded by uptight douche bags who were letting all of the stress of the week float away. Amen for beer, right guys? Once someone noticed that we were not part of the loud-obnoxious-a hole party we were seated quickly. Unfortunately we were seated in a booth next to the bar. The only thing that separated us from the bar and the most annoying bar people ever was a half wall that the khaki pants crew kept leaning on and resting their drinks on. A few times I looked up to see the bar patrons watching us eat. This place is for 9-5 401Kers who have a proper nest egg, don't know what good art is and watch lame tv. This place isn't for me, I don't love Raymond and I don't like Toast. The service was fine, the food was not. I feel like an idiot for trying toast again.

Had lunch here again this week and it was great as always. Sat at the bar, bartender took my order promptly. I took her recommendation and was happy with the outcome. Reading some of the recent reviews it looks like things may have been a bit off for a few weeks because some of these reviews aren't anything like what I've ever experienced there. Wonderful food, great drinks and very kid friendly. That's a tough combo in Richmond. Will be back this week.

The ribs and mac-n- cheese are so good! (With a side of BBQ sauce). And their fries and homemade ketchup are pretty addicting. Everything I've tried so far has not disappointed. It's definitely one of my favorite American restaurants in Richmond.

Came here for lunch with a colleague. Liked the atmosphere! Tried the Hush Puppies with their BBQ Aioli (Great) and had the Cuban Reuben with Sweet Tater Tots (Great presentation, great sandwich!!) I wish I lived closer!!

Great selection of beers tap, bottle, and can. Fine selection of whiskey and bourbon. It is a good place to meet friends for drinks and dinner. Burgers are always a good call. Nice TV's to watch the games. Meeting new people every time I go in for Happy Hour. Could have a better music selection to fit the crowds taste, not the staff.

I love the atmosphere of this restaurant! I wish the service and food was a better fit (not everything on the menu is executed well). This review touches on the last 5 times I've eaten there. I ordered the sirloin pot roast (named some else now) - not good. Incorrect cut of meat for slow roasting (sirloin). It was chewy and dry. The cheese curds and other veggies did not add much to the dish. Their Cuban Ruben is a treat. The sandwich is rich but each component compliments each other. The fried pickles are crispy and the bite of the jalapeños is delicious. Overall the food is good but could be elevated a bit more. The service has slowly gotten better- but not great. Our servers have been aloof, awkward to interact with or not trained properly it seems. Sometimes I've waited a while to even have someone greet us once we sit down. About half of the time we the there are tables available but we wait over 20 minutes to be seated. Overall things have slowly improved and I'm excited to see the progression. I would recommend this restaurant for the ambiance and atmosphere.

The booths are dark and uncomfortable, but the food is good and the ambiance is fun. Ordered salmon both times (salad one time and with rice the second) and was extremely pleased. Service was quick and friendly. Great neighborhood stop. Yum!

Kicking myself for not coming here sooner! You should kick yourself too if you keep waiting. We started with the Shrimp & Crab Nachos, I ordered the Cali Sandwich, my wife ordered the Toast Club and we ended the meal with the Doughnuts with Mascarpone. The Shrimp & Crab Nachos was very different than what I had imagine Nachos to be. It wasn't a greasy and sloppy mess of fattening goodness. Instead it had a very fresh taste with really good ingredients. First, they use real crab meat which is a bonus. I loved the slaw that was tucked underneath the guacamole. Overall a very solid appetizer. The Cali sandwich was one of the best vegetarian sandwiches I have ever had. It was tasty, fresh and very filling. All major things I look for in a vegetarian sandwich. The really kicker in this sandwich is the chive cream cheese that is smeared on the inside of a wonderfully toasted baguette. Other ingredients included cucumber, guacamole and some greens. I am HUGE fan of their fries and homemade ketchup! My wife's Toast Club sandwich was the pure AMAZING! Its fried lake trout, topped with some of the softest/juiciest pork served inside a brioche bun. They provide three house-made sauces: tatar, ketchup and BBQ. Their BBQ sauce is awesome! I had one bite and swore to myself that I should not of done that. I was filled with envy until I ate another bite of my sandwich. If they have the Toast Club on the menu its a MUST order. Desert: Doughnuts served with Mascarpone. Wow! The server brings to the table a plate filled with brown sugar and a white bag. Inside the bag the server shakes up the doughnuts and then rolls them out of the bag onto the brown sugar. These amazing little things were steaming, crispy and very doughy! It was an awesome desert. Either way we cut it this place is a must for us to return. In fact we already are trying to introduce this place to our friends THIS WEEK! Don't wait! Come check it out.

I originally came here because I have a gluten and dairy allergy and heard they had a fantastic gluten free menu. My first visit was with my husband and 12 month old daughter. The hostesses have always been rude and unhelpful. They act as though your presence is an inconvenience. They made a big deal about getting a high chair for us, almost as if they hoped we would leave if they made it difficult enough. Once you make it past them though, you are golden. Our server was extremely helpful and made sure we had fries for the baby within 3 minutes. The Toast burger on the gluten free bun was absolute heaven. The bun was incredible which is rare when dealing with gluten free bread. The dessert, a gluten and dairy free german chocolate cake has had me coming back almost weekly. It is amazing and so rare for a restaurant to offer a delicious dessert, free of gluten and dairy. One visit stood out in my mind as especially fantastic. Once again, the hostess was grouchy and irritating to deal with. When we got our server, I was in love. She was fast, friendly, never had us wanting for anything. She gave great menu suggestions and when she found out about my allergy she made sure I had the full gluten free menu. When I ordered the cake and showed surprise that the whipped cream was dairy free, she brought the can over and gave me extra. I wish I could remember her name but I can't. I know she had tattoos across her chest but the name escapes me. I'll find out tonight since I'll be heading over soon for my weekend slice of cake:)

Great food, but I can't say the same for the hosts. On more than one occasion hosts have rushed my party out after our meal was finished, an odd policy for a gastro pub. Typically I make a reservation, but on walk-in trips, hosts act as if seating a small party is an enormous favor. The servers are pleasant however I typically wait 10-20 minutes after requesting a tab; perhaps they are short on POS machines. Hopefully they can work out their front of house issues as it's really a great place otherwise.

Food was Awesome, atmosphere was great and service wasn't bad at all. James didn't hover over the table and allowed for us to have a subtle conversation all the while being attentive to our water. Would definitely recommend and will be back. Also have intentions to look into their sister restaurants as well.

I've been looking forward to trying out Toast since it's near my work and I love that it's a "Fan-ish" restaurant located in a random shopping center. Went here for lunch; sadly, I wasn't particularly impressed. Ordered the grilled fish reuben which was tasty but they put way too much dressing which resulted in soggy bread. I got the sweet potato tots as a side and they were good except I didn't like the sauce served with it (it might be their creole tartar sauce?). Service was great and the decor is nice; lots of booths and plenty of seating at the bar. I heard good things about brunch at Toast so I'll give that a try the next time I visit.

I've been to this place several times and every time it's been amazing. Tonight however the service and food was terrible. Although our server was polite a first, she forgot our drink orders and didn't acknowledge that they were forgotten even after we said they were. Then when the food came, there was a burnt aroma. We noticed it slightly at first questioning where it came from.... One bite of the mac and cheese and it was VERY clear where the burnt smell was coming from. It was so burnt and inedible that I couldn't swallow it. It made the rest of the food taste like it had rolled around in burnt coals. We then waited 10 minutes for our server to return so that we could tell her that the food was awful and our drinks had never appeared. She then went to discuss this with the chef for 10 more minutes (or maybe just stand in the corner, honestly I don't know). When she did finally come back she informed us that since they were "busy" the cheese sauce got burnt and no one knew.... Don't know how that was possible considering we could smell it as soon as it hit the table. To top it all off, our burnt food was not removed from the table until our late drinks arrived... But on the bright side I can wash down disappointment with a decent Pino. *The only reason I gave them 3 stars is because the other times I've been there it's been ok.

Ate here right after arriving to Richmond for the first time. Loved the atmosphere of the restaurant. Great selection of local brews. Food was amazing and very different than chain restaurants. The cheeto fried veggies and flatbread pizza appetizers were to die for!

One word: UNDERWHELMED!! 1) The host looks out of place; my friends & I thought he was a creeper hanging out by the bar. His attire did not match the employees at all which made him appear as a customer not employee. 2) The waiter informed us that many of the cocktails were new to the menu; I had the Tun Punch & there was no punch at all (taste more like a flat soda). 3) The food was very disappointing....lets start with the fried pickles/jalapeño; taste awful we left behind a full basket...the sweet potato tots taste bland and oven fried, and the steak frites were a miss. I only went because Mint kitchens closes at 10pm & our movie got out late. Overall I will not be going back.

Went for a business lunch once, food was pretty good and so was the service. Only reason I wouldnt give it 5 stars is because it's really tiny ... I suppose it would be a nice date spot though

Great brunch today at Toast. The place was rocking...they do a great business. Husband and I shared an order of the donuts and they were great. Didn't care much for the marscapone spread...would be better if it were whipped. But the donuts were delightful. Then I had the corned beef hash and eggs, and hubby got the chefs bowl, which had a biscuit at the bottom. Scrambled eggs, cajun gravy, bacon, chorizo and tomatoes with hash browns. Really tasty. Would definitely eat here again, although don't know if I would wait a long time for a table. We got lucky and were seated right away, but we saw others waiting a long time.

Hmmmm I'm not sure where to begin. I guess I'll cut straight to the chase. The service was TERRIBLE! I felt like our waitress hated us. I've worked in the food service industry for many, many years, so I can give a girl break if she's super busy or even having a bad day. But this was bad beyond forgiveness. We walked in on a busy Saturday night at 7, and were told it would be about 15 minutes. So we waited at the bar. The atmosphere was very cozy, upscale, and casual. From looking at the specials on the chalkboard we were getting very excited for dinner. From coffee rubbed ribs over gouda mac and cheese to pot roast poutine, everything sounded amazing. The bartender wasn't that great, though. And when it was time for us to be seated at our table it took us a while just to flag her down to let her know we needed our check. Once we were sat, the waitress asked if we wanted anything to drink. Since I'm preggo, I asked for just water. She glared at me as if I had just told her she's ugly. My husband had a glass of wine. A considerable amount of time passed before she asked for our order. We wanted to start with a salad to share, but she walked away before we could tell her our dinner order. Once the salad arrived, it was the wrong one. We almost didn't want to tell her for fear that she'd spit in our food. My dear sweet husband was SO apologetic when he told her it was the wrong one (as if it were our fault?). She was disgusted to hear this and took the salad away. Keep in mind we still haven't ordered our dinner yet. Another server brought out the right salad. Once we finished the salad (which was decent, not great), we were about ready for our dinners to come...oh wait...we still haven't ordered. About 5 minutes later, we had to flag our delightful waitress down to get her to take our orders. She didn't write anything down, so she had to come back and ask us again since she forgot (this was after 10 minutes or so). Finally, we got our food. It was after 9pm. 2 hours since we walked in. The food was ok, but then again, I think the atmosphere and restaurant experience often times influences the taste of food. It may have tasted much better if we felt comfortable, like our waitress was glad we were there, rather than scared of her! Our wonderful waitress checked on us once during our dinner, and when we finally flagged her down again for our check, she brought the bill which had TWO salads on it (the first wrong one, and the second right one). My husband said he'd just pay for it, because he didn't want to deal with sweet waitress anymore. I refused and told her about the issue. As you can imagine, she was delighted to hear this news. My husband (again, dear sweet, generous person that he is) still left a 20 percent tip, but made me promise to write a review about it. When we finally left, we were a little bit in shock, but had some good laughs about the level of disrespect we were treated with.

Only been for lunch but the food is scrumptious! Usually a small wait but seats at the bar available and have sat there and had a great service. Sweet potato tots are amazing!!! Have great variety of beer and wine on tap and specialty drinks. Love the decor and ambiance!

Went for brunch. The food was really good, but nothing that blows you away. I had the brunchaladas (eggs, bacon, cheese, in a corn tortilla) which were really good, but if you put enough cheese sauce on it, I'll probably eat just about anything. The portions were reasonable, but could be seen as little small vs other brunch spots in a similar price point.

Came here for brunch and was really disappointed in how sub par everything was. My friend and I had biscuits and gravy, the biscuit was fine but the gravy was boring and lacking much flavor. And their potatoes are so lack luster. My boyfriend had an omelet that was not special and not much different than an IHOP omelet. We shared the fritters, which were not bad, probably the best thing we had that morning. They're interesting with their sweet and savory dipping options, and over all tasty, but you can't have just those for brunch. This spot has a lot of potential, but is just falling a little short of what it could be. It's a good location and have a nice vibe, but if the food isn't any good then what's the point? I still want to try their sandwiches (I've heard good things) so I'll eventually give them another shot. Crossing my fingers things can turn around.

Bookmarked for months and finally was able to go. Toast is located in a strip mall but when you walk in you would never guess it. The inside is beautiful! I love the ambiance. It is oddly romantic for a gastropub. I am a veganator so I appreciated the fact that they have veggie polenta corn dogs. Haven't had a corn dog in years and this totally hit the spot. The batter was crispy and the BBQ aioli was tdf! My friends did not like the consistency of the veggie dog but I've been eating meatless meat for years so it rocked for me. Pretty good wine selection. I had a Cali Pinot noir and it was as smooth as silk. I ordered the battered fish and chips. I don't know about you but I find it pretty hard to mess up fish and chips. Flakey fish deep fried in beer batter what's not to like. Well this order did not knock my socks off. The fish was mushy not flakey and the batter was under seasoned. The hand cut fries on the other hand were stupidly good. Man, if I could eat them everyday I would!! Homemade ketchup was too sweet for me but man that aioli was awesome with the fires too!! My friend ordered a mahi mahi salad. She said the fish was great but they literally put a stock of romaine lettuce spine and all on her plate as the greens. Kinda weird if you ask me. I am on the fence on giving 4 stars but the under seasoned fish and the branch of salad tilts me towards 3. I will go back and order something else and hopefully update my review. Danni our server was sweet as pie and had the cutest necklace... Just thought I'd throw that in. Farewell toast and see you again soon.....

We had been here in the past when it was "City Limit", so entering the restaurant brought back a lot of fun/hazy memories from college. The look of the restaurant is similar, the old booths appear to stil be there & the layout was the same. The restaurant was somewhat busy at 6pm on a Friday evening but we were seated right away. The service was great & there was a happy hour going on until 7pm so we got good drink specials on my wine & my husbands mixed drink. The restaurant had a lot of couples & families with older children but was also kid friendly for us, we brought our 1 year old & they gave her crayons & something to color. The food was really good. I ordered the crawfish "lousiana lobster roll" with a side of parmesan truffle fries. It was delicious! I would definitely recommend this place for an affordable, unique dining experience. We will definitely be back to try their brunch on the weekend!

Let me start by saying we went to Toast for the first time for brunch about a month ago, and it was nothing short of fabulous. That being said, and being super stoked about going again, I can't express the level of disappointment in my experience this morning. I ordered the vegetarian quiche both times. The first time the slice was thick and had this amazing balsamic reduction drizzled on it and the plate. This time, it was no thicker than a slice of thin crust pizza, it would have been generous to say that one egg was used to make up this slice, no glaze. I have had frittatas that were much thicker, sad. My boyfriend was amazed with his hash brown meal order the first time, but elected for the breakfast bowl special this morning, also a disappointment. Finally, my friend ordered a side of fruit and it was one small slice of watermelon, this is unacceptable. Needless to say I sent my quiche back, and got the French Toast which was actually good. I have been whole heartedly recommending this restaurant over the past month, I no longer will. The consistency between visits is stark. Disappointing. There are many places in Richmond to get a wonderful, consistent brunch. This shouldn't be your first option, or even your tenth.

SIGH. Was seated promptly on a busy Tuesday night for dinner. I ordered the Pumpkin Quinoa burger. Brandi loves pumpkin. Brandi loves quinoa. Brandi loves burgers. So what's not to like?? Wellllllll... I guess I didn't read the description well enough. The burger itself was 90% black beans. And the only trace of pumpkin to be found was in the spread. So I didn't taste any pumpkin until I hit the middle of my burger, where there was a glob of it. And I think my sodium levels rose tenfold, I have never had such a salty vegetarian burger in my life. It was like unnecessary salt, too. Fellow yelper Timmy T.,aka my new best friend, ordered some sort of catfish sandwich and the catfish was so ginormous that the bun really served no purpose. He said it was bland, so I'm not so sure if he enjoyed it. I got parmesan truffle fries for my side (an extra $1.50). They were good, but not phenomenal. They had like 3 hunks of parmesan on them and I could barely taste the cheese aspect of the fry. This seemed to be the consensus for most of the food (ie not being able to taste a key ingredient). The sauce they came with though, was very very tasty. I think I could've eaten that with my fingers. Was it some sort of house-made ketchup concoction? I don't know but it was good. Our waitress was a little awkward but friendly nonetheless, but was incredibly slow. There are a few dishes that I wouldn't mind trying, but I don't think I will go out of my way to return.

I was excited to try this new restaurant a few Friday nights ago. The atmosphere was nice and cozy- not too much different from City Limit, but enough of a change to make it feel like a new restaurant. I was pleasantly surprised by the menu options and pricing. I had to ask the server for suggestions because I was torn between 3-4 selections. I ended up ordering the Pickles and Caps App, and the Toast's take on the Sloppy Joe. The Pickles and Caps were great- these were fresh cut jalapenos- not the frozen stuff- HOWEVER about half of the bowl was hard, fried nuggets of nothing, which was very a huge letdown. The sloppy joe was VERY good, but its nothing like a sloppy joe you are used to- had more of a middle eastern flavor to it. They make their own ketchup, which is ok, but you really shouldnt try to mess with traditional Heinz... I like the effort, but ketchup is the one battle you are going to lose. Heinz has the market! Overall the experience was great, and I am looking forward to trying it again. EDIT: I returned since the first time and tried the Pickle and Cap appetizer again. This time there were no dried, hard pieces!

An absolutely amazing place. Even with the Auburn/Alabama game on TV, the bar was only filled at the seats. They have done a great job appealing to multiple classes of people with a fantastic menu, extensive beer selection, and top of the line craft brew list (including local fare). My girlfriend had the crab macaroni and cheese. Its crab, mac, and cheese...need I say more? I had the bourbon BBQ glazed mahi mahi over grilled asparagus. It's going to be tough to beat the experience we had here.

It's always something... Half of the entree is cold... Or something is overcooked. It's just always something. Latest example: the menu says "Chicken & Dumplings" and it's lukewarm thin broth with over sized croutons - yet my taste buds (and stomach, on a cold wintry day) ached for a nice, thick creamy "real" Chicken and Dumplings. "Creative license by the chef" the server said. "Disappointed" the customer said. It's just always something. It's around the corner and it's convenient, but maybe I just keep hoping that Toast will turn the corner and knock out some really good food... But then again...

I've driven by this place several times but never went there because I tend to have a low opinion of restaurants located in strip malls. Stupid, I know. This place looks awesome on the inside with all the dark wood... I felt like I was in the Fan once I got through the door. I wasn't that hungry unfortunately so I just had the Caprese salad with crostini, which was very good. The menu looked awesome though - lots of comfort-type food like crab mac & cheese, pot roast, etc. I will definitely return when I have more of an appetite.

Was brought here while on vacation this past week visiting friends....they know I like food and places that are unique to the area....this was exactly that....top notch offerings....we split the sausage & white cheese corn dogs and the special app. Of Chicharron Nachos....both were great but the entries were the main attraction...the Meatloaf was delicious and bbq ribs over Gouda Mac n cheese was on point...the sweet potato tots were amazing also....didn't have room for dessert but couldn't pick between 3 items on the menu anyhow....will def be back when I return for another visit

Had an amazing first experience at Toast on Friday night! But I think that was because A) it wasn't busy at all (even though it was a Friday night? Maybe because of the neighborhood?) and B) I ordered a burger, something that's hard to mess up. My meal was fantastic. The burger was perfectly cooked, flavorful, and juicy. I loved the fries! Hand-cut and the perfect amount of greasy and crispy. Much better than Burger Bach (thought I would never utter those words!). The burger itself came with smoked Applewood bacon and crispy onions on a bed of greens and a brioche bun and homemade ketchup on the side. This is how to do it! Very reasonably priced as well. Everything tasted fresh. I was in heaven. From reading other people's reviews, there must be some issues with the service, but luckily, our server was very attentive the other night! Also, it seems like the food is a hit or miss. The menu IS extensive, so I would recommend looking online beforehand. Excited to try the crab nachos next time.

Toast is great. I met a friend for dinner and I had been wanting to go for a while so I suggested it for dinner! It was also helped that it's right near Shyndigz ;). I absolutely loved the cider that we had. I wish I could think of the name! It tasted just like apple juice. If anyone thinks of the name please shoot me a message and let me know! Anywho, I had the burger and fries and my friend had the crab mac & cheese. My burger was just OK. I love that it had the crispy onions and the reason why it was just OK and not fabulous is totally my fault. I ordered medium well when I usually like my meat cooked medium so like I said, that was totally my bad. However, my friend's crab mac & cheese was delish! I might get that next time :) Overall I had a great time at Toast and I loved the dinner lighting. Nice touch! I appreciate the little details.

After hearing rave reviews of this restaurant and hearing of their wine on tap, I knew I had to try it out. Three whites and three reds on tap. Sounds pretty amazing to me. They have various happy hour specials with a good post-work atmosphere. I tried the cabernet on tap, which was actually really good for a $4 glass of wine. Their food presentation is impressive and their staff is friendly.

This place has replaced most suggestions for where to eat with a group of friends. We're ALWAYS pleased, the drink selection is GREAT, and the service is always spot on. The few hiccups we had were small and resolved quickly and we only had 1 bad experience but it was due to some sort of frat invasion and the restaurant was swamped with standing room only at a typically quiet time. Do not hesitate to go here, their specials rotate regularly and they post them on their facebook page. More than once I have gotten them and my favorite thus far remains to be the seared tuna nachos which truly blew my mind.

Leave the carb counting at the door.... The food here is great, don't get me wrong. It has dev potential as a happy hour local with a strong app menu. A must is the sweet potato tots. The carb heavy foods are amazeballs. Mac n cheese with ribs was spot on. The Rachel sandwich was average to meh... and if you really want truffle fries, this is never going to make best in the city (see Postbellum for that)... This is also not someplace for a quite meal, it gets loud. That said, they do have a large table for a group in the back and the service was great! Will return!

Visited Toast with my wife for brunch today. Have been in for their unique beer selection before but not to eat. There was a short wait so we enjoyed spicy bloody marys at the bar with the very personable Al. We were seated in a cozy both for two and greeted by our very attentive waitress Amy. At this point the place was buzzing but not to loud. There was an eclectic mix of young people, families and church goers in the surrounding booths. Our food arrived in a reasonable amount of time. My wife enjoyed the crispy and flavorful huevos rancheros while I devoured my new favorite breakfast item, green eegs and hash. The eggs on each dish were poached perfectly and the pesto sauce on the green eggs was delicious! Our overall experience at Toast was wonderful. We will definitely be back!

I am in Richmond for work and thought I'd check the place out given the reviews. The bartender, Eric, was very friendly and enthusiastic. The atmosphere was nice, a little dark for my liking, but still nice. The food was pretty good. I don't think it was anything spectacular, but it wasn't bad by any means. It could have been what I ordered too. Regardless, the place has great customer service, good food, and a nice atmosphere. I would recommend trying it.

Excellent dining experience in an unassuming strip mall. Toast has a relaxed atmosphere. However, on Saturday night the noise was so loud that I had to speak in a raised voice just to be heard. I had the Beer Battered Fish & Chips. The batter on the fish was light and crispy with tender fish that flaked apart. I definitely enjoyed the fries and honorable mention the house catchup .... it's simply delicious and stimulates the taste buds! Also the tarter sauce you will gobble it up. You can also wet-your-whistle with a huge selection of beer. If you like the taste of Guinness style beer I recommend "Back In Black." The Crab Mac N Cheese ..... it's OK .... lack of flavor and could have used more crab in my opinion. Accompanied by a fresh spring salad, was simple and healthy. The server was professional and pleasant but not overly personable. In spite of that I would definitely recommend and will be going back there again.

Mmm! Toast! I love their brunch and can't wait to try their dinner. Bloody marys here are good, if you're a fan and picky like me. They have so many gourmet options for brunch/lunch with things like huevos rancheros, brunchiladas (my favorite!) and crab benedict. Everything I've had is delicious...even their ketchup is good!!! Will definitely be back!

I really enjoy this establishment. My first visit was back in January for a Richmond Social Media event. It was crowded in the bar area, but there was still something very comfortable about it. I make it a point to go for happy hours because I love the wine on tap and they also have an eclectic beer on tap list that never disappoints (I LOVE IPA'S). The corndog appetizer is divine and the homemade ketchup is not to be missed. If eating a full meal or brunch I tend to go with the daily aspecials and am always satisfied, usually surprised as well (Grilled Watermelon BLT???? - DELICIOUS). The atmosphere is conducive to stopping by for a late cocktail as well -- I have been there as late as 11pm on a weekday and not felt rushed. PS --- Dominic is an RVA-Bartender-extraordinaire !!! also, they do have wifi (it says no above) and check the "tips" section for the password thanks to Chad W.

This place is awesome! From the art on the walls to the food to the A++ service, I thoroughly enjoyed my lunch here. First off, the decor is pretty hipster, right down to the lower case font the restaurant name is written in. The music is chock full of the indie type, from Coconut Records to Tegan & Sara to Modest Mouse. A cute touch I liked was that the drink menu and your bill are presented on mini clipboards. I got the caprese panini because I was in the mood for a grilled cheese with tomatoes, and it was exactly what I wanted. The balsamic also gave it a great flavor. My boy was feeling adventurous and ended up getting the BLW, a BLT twist with watermelon instead of tomato! It sounded crazy to me (watermelon and bacon on a sandwich?!) but the juicy, watery melon fit right in the spot of a juicy, watery tomato. I had one bite without tasting the accompanying bleu cheese and one with, and I have to say I preferred it without. Both bites were delicious but the bleu cheese was another strong flavor that didn't seem necessary. The bacon really grounded the watermelon and stopped the sandwich from becoming too sweet. Speaking of sweet, once I saw that the donuts with mascarpone were only $5, I had to try them. It didn't feel like we were waiting that long, but our server came by to tell us that the first donut batch burned so she told the kitchen to try again. When she brought us the donuts, she said they were on the house since we had to wait "so long." Score! The donuts themselves were so yummy, with a healthy sprinkling of cinnamon sugar -- slightly crisp on the outside, soft and fluffy on the inside. The mascarpone was a good complement but I found myself wishing for the sourness of cream cheese. Probably just a personal preference. Our server was super sweet and cheerful, but not annoying at all. Just a cool cat really. I checked out their beer list and they've got Devil's Backbone Vienna Lager on tap (win!) and Yuengling bottles for $3.50 (double win!) so I will definitely be back.

I have seen the restaurant many times and we finally stopped in. I probably should not have waited for so long. The place was really great- diverse menu, lots if vegetarian options and original flavors and dishes. We had sweet potato tater tots, veggie lasagna and black bean veggie burger. Great prices and fast service. Look forward to trying more menu items.

Absolutely loved my first trip to toast the menu is awesome and has tons of items I would go back for. The beer selection is ok I went with just a domestic beer to save some money but may branch out next time. If you love good food and can get over the hipster feel/clientele then toast is your place.

Verdict Will definitely go back for the sweet potatoes totes and to try other dishes. Overall experience Nice twist to the tradition brunch menu, comfortable settings, surprisingly easy parking in a busy plaza, and friendly service. Food The egg benedict is absolutely delicious. Perhaps the best I've had thus far... but somehow I feel like something is still missing. I LOVE LOVE the sweet potatoes totes. Bitesize of sweet deliciousness. Mimosa is not good though. Service My waitress was very nice. She stopped by often to ensure everything is ok. We were in a hurry and the food arrives fast, delicious upon a smiling face. Settings Setting are surrounded with booths. It fits 4 people comfortablely, but if you have a large crowd you'll have to split. :-( Location & Parking Surprisingly easy parking in a busy plaza Price Reasonable price.

Today's lunch was definitely underwhelming. I ordered the gouda burger sliders to go. The fries were cold, the lettuce was wilted, the bun was cold, and the burgers were nearly burnt. A far cry from my 1st experience here. I was really hoping for the same wow factor the crab mac and cheese offered but I was quite disappointed. For what its worth, the staff was nice but I don't think I will be returning for lunch.

You had me at homemade ketcuhp, Toast! Stopped in before heading back to Williamsburg after a late meeting in Richmond, managed to get good seats at the bar, beating in the crowd coming in from a UR basketball game. Decent beer selection, menu is a little weird to read, fortunately, our bartender was more than willing to go through what they had in the "rotating" tap categories and she ended up making some great recommendations. The food was really excellent. My wife had the Sloppy Joseph, a lamb and chorizo, sloppy joe seasoned with Indian spices, along with great house cut fries and the aforementioned homemade Ketchup. Whatever I ordered, they were out of, but the ruben sandwich that I got instead was so good, I forgot what I had initially ordered. The sweet potato tots were also very tasty!

Wow this place is great order the sliders you will never be disappointed, we sat at the bar and the staff was amazing. All of the drinks are the great standards plus some really great originals. My husband and I have been back several times we are never disappointed, we have never had a bad meal. Check out their happy hour, the staff is wonderful

I've had lunch here twice, and dinner here once. Breakfast/brunch is next on my list, because I can't get enough of this place. I love their menu items, and their specials are always really great too. The food is fresh, it tastes delicious, and the flavor and texture combinations are wonderful. Go for the sweet potato tots, and get the tomato soup! I can't limit it to these two things, their menu is tops. Even when on a restricted protein and vegetable "meal plan", you can find items here. The presentation is also spectacular- you can tell they take pride in what they do.

Toast is one of my favorite places in Richmond. While I've dined there frequently for lunch, dinner & happy hour, I tried their brunch for the first time this weekend. The restaurant has a great vibe with lots of weathered wood in their decor for a very natural look. The lights are typically low and I enjoy that it's a trendier restaurant but in the convenience of the near West End with great parking. As always, we were greeted upon entering the restaurant, promptly seated and served drinks. Their brunch menu has many traditional dishes with a twist. I got the huevos rancheros and they were phenomenal. Just enough food to be content without being full. One thing you must try if you're ever there is the sweet potato tater tots!

Toast is one of my favorite restaurants in Richmond! The food and service are always great. I have been multiple times for brunch, lunch, and dinner. There is sometimes a little bit of a wait on the weekends, but its never too long, and we just cozy up to the bar and enjoy some wine on tap while we wait. Both the food and drink menu are very diverse. We always recommend that people try this awesome restaurant!

I have been using Burger Bach as my go to burger place for the past year or so until I went to have lunch at Toast. I am gluten free and for many of us that are getting a good burger is a bit of a task. Last week I ventured out to the near west-end to check Toast out. I was thoroughly impressed. I don't think I put the burger down once! They have great buns from 3 fellas bakery and the toppings were incredible as is the house-made secret ketchup. Definitely going to be making regular appearances at this place.

This place might have my holy grail huevos rancheros. Seriously, it was perfect and delicious without being over-filling. I've also had the bruncheladas and while they weren't my favorite, they were very good. The mexi-burger is insanely flavorful, but sadly mine was a tad dry. I tasted the pot roast poutine and that was awesome. Where has that been all my life?! The atmosphere is awesome so I really hope everyone keeps going here so it stays. Anyways, try this place ASAP. Things I didn't care for? Didn't like the hashbrowns because they tasted undercooked. Anyways, still a must try place!

My only complaint about this awesome little neighborhood joint is that it is too popular! On a recent trip I was amazed by how packed it was on a weekday evening - but we were able to snag one of the last available tables. Ordered the fries (with yummy homemade ketchup) for an app and I had the salmon and beet salad for my entree. The salmon was cooked perfectly - crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside - and wonderfully seasoned! The dressing and the toppings on the salad were so good I tried to recreate it at home the next week. If you are in the area go. If you aren't - take a trip out to this end of town and give it a try! Would be a great place for a casual family get-together!

I don't know, I just don't know. You know when a place is so popular that you get the impression that it's like a rolling boulder that could serve cold cereal and people would still come? That's the vibe I got at Toast, a new "gastropub" in the Village Shopping Center, a strip mall still looking for its proper niche, although I've not seen it so crowded in quite a while. This is a fan-type restaurant in the far west end, and the low lights and dark-amber tones give it a boost of trendiness and heighten its already surging popularity. Yes, Toast is popular, and the clientele is the type that doesn't care that you've been waiting a half hour or more for a table, they're there to hang out and be seen in the most popular restaurant in town, by others eating in the most popular restaurant in town. Oh well, at least the bar list of beers and wines is very impressive, with an emphasis on Virginia microbrews and plenty of red and white wine choices to fit every budget and palate. To the food, a nice selection of appetizers that were different to say the least. On a tip, we tried their signature polenta corndogs, nicely battered and served with their house homemade ketchup and bbq aioli (more like a mustard). Good, but still a corndog. The entrees we got were better, and on the quality of the beef in the toast burger was clearly high quality and the mexi burger, a mix of beef and chorizo with excellent toppings, was good but the brioche bun couldn't handle the wet ones. The fries were handcut and quite good. I paid extra to have the parmesan and truffle fries, but the regular fries were good enough as I found myself going back to the regular ones. My wife got a scallop special she deemed "adequate" but it did not thrill by any means. Given the portions for the other entrees we saw, it seemed pretty small for the $18 dollars spent. The dessert we tried were the homemade donuts with mascarpone dipping cream. Probably not something you want after a corndog and burger, but to each his own. I would say that an additional visit would be needed to really grasp what Toast is all about, but overall, we had fun, more with the drinks and desserts than the main courses, but more remains to be seen and eaten. Just remember to pack your patience and your appetite for adventure as you'll probably be eating something you didn't expect. More than likely you'll like it, but so far, I'm not sure it's worth the hype.

I went to Toast a few months ago with a friend when I had just flown into town and needed a beer. We both had different beers from Bell's, and they were $4 each. Pretty good price for craft brew, but that might just be Richmond. Wanted a snack and ended up with $9 pierogi nachos. I remember them being pretty damn good, but I'm an idiot for not writing a review the next day when it was fresh in my mind. Overall, cool spot to get exposed to.

Just the facts: - My coffee mug was empty more than it was full. - Our brunch meals arrived lukewarm at best. - My wife's chorizo sausage huevos ranchero had no chorizo. - My Monterrey Bennie was ok, the huevos rancheros were fairly "bleh" Maybe this place is popular with the locals that live near by? I am baffled by the 4 star rating. Back to The Magpie for our Sunday brunch it is.

After reading so many positive reviews our party of 6 was looking forward to dinner. The fish and chips was returned because of tasting mushy and for being "the fish of the day" it was not fresh! The salad with rock fish was a disappointment. Again, the fish was not fresh, smelled too fishy and clearly was not rock! I had the salmon over rice and it was prepared OK but unremarkable and salty. The hamburger and fries was the only dish that earned 3 stars! Although, the service was good and manager gracious with retuned food, we will not return. We later ended up at Joe's (in the Fan) and enjoyed comfort food!

Dinner time ambiance is awesome. Very lively. Carribean Black Bean Burger - delicious! Drinks here are to die for! Curried Indian pakoras were delicious so we ordered a second serving and they came out burnt :( So, I have to take away half a star. Veggie corn dog.... No taste at all so need to take away another half star. Overall I will be coming back.

Excellent wine, liquor and beer selection. My only turndown was their focus on whisky and rye. I understand a restaurant focusing on a liquor, but there was no real theme to accommodate the focus on whisky and rye. With their name and logo, it seems like it would be champagne or beer based. The food was good and I loved the lobster roll and the shrimp and crab nachos. Definitely a diamond in the rough, and worth a taste.

I recently stopped by Toast for brunch. I live in DC where restaurants boast about what are actually mediocre brunches. Unreliable fare and disappointing experiences keep my brunch expectations low. Toast far exceeded my expectations, delivered fantastic fare, and restored my waning faith in a positive brunch experience. Creative Menu I arrived at around 11:30, got a seat, and ordered a coffee, which arrived quickly and remained full throughout my meal. I commenced to pore over the extensive and creative menu. With so many options that appear so good, it took me a while to decide to go with The Chicken & The Egg. Impressive Decor & Environment As I waited for my order, I took in Toast's casual, hip environment. I appreciate the exposed ceilings, the beautiful booths that account for at least 75% of its seating, the lighting fixtures, and the decor, particularly the use of doors as decorative pieces. Though I didn't spend any time there, the well-stocked bar was long, clean, crisp, and in incredible condition. The Chicken & The Egg: "Absolutely Incredible" Then, my doubling-down on chicken products paid off. The structural foundation of the dish is a homemade biscuit with tasty and tastefully-applied sausage gravy. Atop the biscuit and gravy was a well fried, crispy piece of chicken which an over-easy egg crowned. Absolutely incredible. Ketchup -- Do It One element stood out. The hash browns were good, but they were made all the better with homemade ketchup. Under whatever circumstance you find yourself at Toast, make sure you order something that can be served with ketchup. I strongly encourage any Richmonder or out-of-towner in Richmond to check out Toast.

My husband & I were really disappointed. We had read some good reviews about this place but it came up really short. We started out with Shrimp & Crab nachos which came out with cold crab & unmelted cheese. My husbands meatloaf came with veggies so hard & undercooked you could not even stab them with a fork. I ordered a burger, which had a huge hamburger patty but was very pink in the middle and I had ordered it well done. We got the french fries with parmasean and truffle oil for an additional charge but I couldnt really tell the difference between these and the normal french fries. I think there are a lot of really great ideas on the menu but they are very poorly executed. The only plus was the interesting bar menu with some exotic beer choices.

Love the feel of this place... They are clearly "different" than other places in the area. They bring you this glass bottle of water with little shotglass size glasses.... it reminded me of Miami...however, The food was awesome. I had the shrimp and crab nachos appetizer..They were finger licking good... And they had a special that i chose.. Called "Far East Poutine". It was sweet chili and ginger marinated sirloin tips over top of sweet potato fries and broccoli. I was a little leery at the idea of the fries being soggy but the sauce was so yummy I barely noticed! I was there during happy hour so... I had to order a couple drinks. My bf who is a beer lover was a little disapointed at the size of the beer glass..he said it was too small, in fact he said it was too close to the size of the water glass. I ordered a margarita,it tasted too salty.. i didnt like it, but the waitress recommended I try a drink the bartender created called " hey jealousy" it had bluecoat gin, st. Germaine liquer, , lemon, hibiscus blossom and sparkling white wine. It was everything the margarita was not. Yummy :). Oh my goodness the star of this meal was the throwback to my childood banana pudding with vanilla wafers... I almost licked the bowl! Service was great.. Our server was very friendly and knew the menu well, that always helps. My only complaint was the bathroom.... It was filthy. The toilet was disgusting, the stall door had no lock so I had to reach and struggle to hold it open... Ugg.. It was too much...

Me, my wife, and kids came to Toast over the weekend. The food was really delicous and great service. The sweet potato mash is some of the best mash I've ever had. We also really enjoyed the fries and tots and they were willing to do a special request for my daughter (BLT). I definitely plan to come back to try the ribs over mac n' cheese. My only recommendation would be to get rid of the curtain at the front as it caused a bit of confusion coming in, especially at 7 on a Saturday.

Great selection of draft beer and great service sitting at the bar. She crab soup was outstanding. I had a lunch special.. ribeye served on a bed of mac and cheese. The meat was medium-well. I asked for medium. A little whoops there, but it was still tender and good. The bed of mac and cheese? Yikes. I was so cold the cheese had gone back to grainy. Despite this, I will go back since it's in my neighborhood and I really, really want to like this place.

Friends and I went to Toast yesterday for lunch; we all work at the university nearby, none of us had been and we wanted to check it out. We arrived at noon and the place was pretty empty. Had good service, but the food was pretty mediocre, at best. The place looks great (much improved from City Limit and even way back when it used to be Potter's Pub). I ordered the turkey/avocado sandwich and it was pretty basic - nothing special here. French fries are my weakness and I was excited when I saw hand-cut fries. Again, pretty mediocre and everyone's fries came out luke warm. Two friends had the turkey burger, both said that it was pretty bland with little to no flavor. I (along with my fellow diners) was also not a fan of the "homemade ketchup" either - it has a distinct cinnamon flavor to it, which I did not find to be tasty at all. One more pet peeve that the folks at Toast do: fake Diet Coke (read: generic, off-label but still call it Diet Coke). I hate when restaurants cut corners on the little things... Overall verdict: probably won't go back to eat, which is disappointing because I always am on the lookout for a good place near work. I would go back and drink there - seems like a good atmosphere for after-work happy hour.

Had dinner with my daughter last night . Amanda was a great server. Sweet potato tots were good. ( Don't know why they stick with that sauce- it just didn't complement the Tots). Gouda / ribs mac cheese was good but rib meat was dry and obviously had been cooked for a while. Slider appetizer was very good but was not prepared medium as my daughter requested. Honey Mascarpone donuts for dessert :(. As donut HOLES were dry and not good and mascarpone ( I guess) served on the side was hard as if just taken from the fridge. Don't know where the honey figured in and certainly could not apply the side of mascarpone/honey to the donut HOLES. Wanted to love it but it appears the kitchen just assumes you will accept whatever they send to the table. Did not make a scene but did not inspire me to want to return. I expected more given the RTD review of 4 stars. I would give it 2 at most . Had a very pleasant birthday dinner with my daughter but did not live up to expectations. Sorry. ;-(!!!!!!! C. Hutcheson

I've been here several times, and I can't say enough about how great everything is. The staff and owners are attentive and friendly. They have a great selection of craft beers -- nice to have the usual suspects as well as some interesting choices that you don't see everywhere. Everything on the menu (and the specials!) has been wonderful. Good food without being crazy expensive or pretentious. Great soups!

Thought Toast was a very good place to have dinner in the West End. Started out with Shrimp & Crab Nachos - definitely recommend it. Dinner has the Grilled Avocado and Corn Chip salad and that was also very good. Will definitely be going back. Awesome selection of craft beers on draft as well.

Toasts dark wooden finishes, vintage light bulbs, and burled wooden tables reminisce of Fan or Church Hill restaurant stylings. It isn't until you peer out the front windows that you're gazing into the parking lot of the Village Shopping Center. On my first visit to Toast, I made it in time for happy hour and I was pleased to find you didn't have to sit at the bar for happy hour specials (unlike other places). I was delighted to order a house pinot noir for $4. Later, after doing a little research, I discovered this is was not just any wine, Toast has their vino on tap. Yes, on tap. Richmond's first restaurant to have this, one of those hip newfangled "We did this before you did" thing that makes Toast stand out. As I sipped my wine, I couldn't tell but it's pretty darn cool. My girlfriend and I started with the polenta corn dogs ($7), we hoped they'd be more of a mini corn dog so we were surprised when two big corndogs (stick and all) arrived at our table. They were ho-hum, I thought the polenta would be thicker with prominent texture but it was remindful of a normal corndog. Not a disappointment but not a star. I did enjoy the three dipping sauces it was served with- a sweet homemade ketchup, spicy mustard, and a tangy delicious bbq. For my main plate, I chose the vegetarian lasagna ($11) with squash, zucchini, eggplant, and ricotta topped with marinara. Unfortunately, it wasn't a hit either. The bowl it was served in had too much over-baked crust around so I had to work my spoon around the sides to get a bite. This meal wasn't wonderful but I wasn't ready to close the door on Toast just yet. Later that week, I suggested to another couple that we should all have dinner there. Second round, we went on a Friday night. The mood was certainly alive and opposite of the quietness I experienced that Wednesday evening. I chose the Hanover tomato sandwich ($9) with a side of mixed greens. This sandwich was a winner- the warm thick tomato slices, creamy goat cheese, and fresh brioche bun was perfection. The sandwich redeemed the bland experience I had before. The side of mixed greens however, was...mixed greens. Nothing else- no cucumbers, tomatoes, or anything you'd find common. Besides the ranch dressing- I was a little bored. My dining companions were a little underwhelmed with their meals portion size. My lady chose a quinoa veggie burger and fries- the few bites I took, it was pretty good. The hit was dessert- mini donuts served with Honey Mascarpone cream. The donuts are served warm in a bag, our waitress even gave the bag a little shake to make sure they were coated with the sugar and cinnamon. They were incredible and plentiful. I'll revisit Toast again soon. It's close to home and I look forward to discover more menu offerings- even though I'm jonesing for the tomato sandwich and donuts.

Toast has a comfortable atmosphere with dim lighting that makes you feel cozy inside. The booths and tables are all hardwood finished and coated. They look great and are surprisingly comfortable; it's a nice change from the usual. I don't know if our drink orders were lost or the server was overbooked with tables, but it took us a little while to get our first round of drinks. I'm not one for wine and I don't do liquor out to eat, but I will say that the beer menu was extensive with drafts, bottles, and cans available, half of which seemed to come from in-state and several from local breweries in town. That scored major points in my book. The two sided menus were really cool; the papers were rubber-banded on the front and back of a wooden slab; very simple, and very happy with that. On the menu were some unique choices (a delicious meatloaf, mac and cheese with crab, some unique sandwiches) but the specials really sold us. We ended up ordering four appetizers: a cup of chicken chili with chips to dip, a caprese salad with crostini, a cup of she-crab soup and a grilled Caesar salad, all of which were delicious and flavorful. The she-crab soup could have had a lot more crab. As for entrees, we ordered the fried pork chop special, topped with a bourbon barbecue sauce and served with sweet potato tater tots and grilled veggies. The pork chops were breaded and fried to perfection. The tots were served with a delicious remoulade that had a hint of cinnamon. My girlfriend had a tilapia dish served with pesto and goat cheese on top and over rice and sauteed arugula. Spiced to perfection, but still able to taste the fish. After our meal we ordered a cup of decaf, but were brought a cup a soup mistakenly, and when the coffee was finally brought out, was watered down and flavorless, but I suppose not many others are drinking coffee at 9pm. Overall, the experience was great. It's a great place, the menus are great, the specials are incredible, and the service was alright. It was a little slow, but the place just opened so there are still kinks to work out. I look forward to going back and experiencing it again, I'm sure the daily specials will be stellar!

I usually haven't had a lot of success in restaurants in strip malls, but this was great! A local place near UR, it was pretty busy at 9:45p.m. on a Friday night. But not so crowded that it was uncomfortable. We had drinks and dessert, and others at our table ordered the sweet potato tater tots as well. Tater tots were great, and the chocolate almond tiramisu was delicious! Varied and well-priced drink menu, and the service was great too. Will definitely give it a try for other meals besides dessert.

You take the good, you take the bad, you take them both and there you have dinner at Toast. Its a new "gastropub" in what used to be City Limit and I'm guessing that "gastropub" basically means that you have pub grub kicked up a notch with some slightly more interesting twists (see apple slaw on the Rachel). The good - fun menu good variety of wines, beers and cocktails the atmosphere (funky and retro) they still have sweet potato tots - double yum! The bad - the service (slow and inattentive) the sloppy Joseph (way over spiced) the beer list (show me the prices, please) no happy hour specials - or at least none that we were made aware of So, look at that, the good and bad balance out which would indicate a 2.5 star review but I will give them the benefit of the doubt as a new restaurant and round up.

Sad. We have liked this spot in the past. Tonight was not good. The shrimp and crab nachos were good. My fish and chips was awful. The batter did not stick to the fish. The fries were soggy and I was amazed that they were served like this. My husband ordered the burger. The waitress dropped the side container of sauce on him. She did not really care too much about his dirty shirt and did not offer to comp a dessert or anything. Who drops a whole container on a customer? The desserts were okay. Just nothing to make me return and too many good restaurants that offer consistent quality food with servers who care. Disappointing that this restaurant has gone downhill like this.

Good place to go for a relaxing lunch or dinner. Our party tried the ribs with smoked Gouda Mac and cheese which was simply delicious....the fish and chips cooked just right and very tasty...and the beer can chicken over regular Mac and cheese. The rub on the chicken skin is very spicy but the underlying chicken was juicy and tasty. The ribs were meaty, tender and served hot with an excellent sauce and on top of the Gouda Mac and cheese was a great dinner plate. We noticed other plates coming out of the kitchen and decided we will return to try some other entrees as they all looked good. Our waitress was right on top of things and was there when we needed her and not hovering when we didn't. All in all this is a place worth the visit and a bit of looking to find it at the end of the shopping center!

Wine on tap :-). Nice atmosphere, good food. Meatloaf and Parmesan truffle fries....yummy! Homemade ketchup was delicious too.

Ok, I came here looking for a great burger, and that is what I got. I ordered the Toast Burger with hand cut fries. The burger was cooked just like I ordered and and seasoned perfectly. The brioche roll was good an held up. the fries were very tasty, but a little in the soggy side. I liked the homemade ketchup and BBQ sauce, although they are unique tasting. I sat at the bar for faster service and not only was it fast but the server was excellent, attentive, and friendly. The place us far from cheap but not to overly priced, in my option, for the quality of food. I plan to take the family back.

I wanted this place to be awesome, I really did. I have always had visions of a great neighborhood spot popping up in the Village Shopping Center so I was very excited when I heard about Toast. However, I was a little disappointed with my initial experience. Service was not great, which surprised me considering we went during their inaugural week. I would expect everyone to be going above and beyond but instead our server was indifferent and inattentive. Lame. The food was just okay. We had the turkey burger and the mexi burger and both were meh. The turkey burger was overcooked although the apple slaw was really tasty. We also tried the fried pickles and jalepenos which we really liked - they have a nice batter that isn't too heavy. We also had the parmesan truffle fries, which were good but nothing to write home about. I will say that the atmosphere is neat and I'm loving the idea of wine on tap. I tried the Cabernet and it was good. Glasses are $6 but $4 during happy hour. Score! Overall, I will definitely give this place a second chance but I'm not jumping the gun to go back. But please, Toast, give me a place to LOVE in this shopping center!

Some of the best food I've ever had in Richmond. Southern Pub Club and sweet potato tots were incredible!!!

I go to toast every time I'm in Richmond. I went the first time because I've known the owners for years, but subsequently I've gone because I wanted to. I love the atmosphere which to me feels really inviting and comfortable. Something about light wood and soft lighting just makes me feel at ease. The drink selection is great (ok in terms of liquor I only looked at the bourbon, but it was indeed great!). I've sampled a few of the craft cocktails which were also very good. But in terms of adult beverages, can I just say: wine on tap. from a keg. WINE. ON TAP. I was sold. But if you need more than that: the food is a little bit inventive without being overly pretentious. You've probably never had a watermelon BLT but you can pronounce and recognize all the ingredients. They're simple but put together in sometimes surprising ways. And taste good too! One of the best things (did I mention the wine on tap yet?) is that the staff was very nice and friendly even BEFORE they realized I knew their bosses. And now I wish I was in Richmond so I could go to toast RIGHT NOW.

Toast is A-OK in my book. It has a cool and comfortable atmosphere. Service wasn't bad but it wasn't great either. It did take a while to get drink refills. They have a good drink selection with some cool beers and wines to choose from. I had the Devils Backbone Vienna Lager which was awesome. I got the Sloppy Joseph with tots. The tots were really good and came with this special sauce. But the sandwich was just not doing it for me. It was ok. They did a much better job with the appetizers. The fried pickles and jalepenos were really really good and the guacamole with chips was really good as well. Although one could argue it's hard to mess up either one of those dishes. It is a lot better than the previous restaurant that was in this spot and I will definitely be back to try something else.

This place has an awesome reputation and after visiting for the first time, I can see why! I visited on a packed Monday night with a small group of friends, and we had a great time! The only downside is that you will have a hard time deciding what to order! They have an awesome drink menu - went with an old-fashion. Our server recommended a seasonal special- The BLW (Bacon, Lettuce, Watermelon). I was super intrigued, so I ordered it, and I can't explain it, but somehow it works. The watermelon was grilled and coated with a little bit of balsamic and goat cheese. The whole thing was huge and I ended up taking half of it home. I highly recommend ordering it if its still on the menu!

The bacon nachos were great, I didnt want them to end. I also ordered the drink "Hey Jealousy". This drink had a habiscus flower in the bottom. I never would of thought you could eat a habiscus flower but I did! When I scooped it out of my drink it looked like a baby octapus, but when I ate it- it tasted like a fruit rollup! Needless to say my date was very jealous hence the name of the drink!

Wow wow wow wow! I was driving through Richmond and stopped here on a whim. When pulling into the strip mall I didn't have high hopes as it was in a strip mall but I was Absolutely impressed! Delicious food, creative menu, excellent environment. If I could rate it higher than 5 stars I would. Go there, you won't be disappointed!

After a long week at work, all i wanted to do was kick back and a few drinks. We decided to his this place since I've heard great things and because nothing makes me happier than a happy hour. We walked in at 5:45 and were seated at the last available table (SCORE!). We started with some brews and the Scallop and Pork Belly app. Super delish with tart ripe mango and cliantro sauce, but they tried to pass of a half scallop as a whole (i'm sorry but for $12 and 3 scallops I want a whole one) we complained and the brought out a whole one right away. For entrees I got the crab mac and cheese and my partner in gluttony ordered the pepere's pork pie. Nothing screams out happiness to me more than seafood and mac and cheese and i was one happy girl. His pork pie tasted like Christmas. I decided to switch from beer to elixirs and ended up with the cranberry "daiquiri". great drink and I had to fight to keep his hands off. I think I might have found my happy place.

I have tried Toast on two separate occasions, my latest experience especially driving my desire not to come back. Two Issues: 1. THE CRAB MAC N CHEESE Sounds delectable on paper - it was anything but in actuality. It was so salty and fishy I could hardly muster up eating a few bites of it. My two friends eating with me found it extremely salty as well. 2. Service Our waitress was extremely nice, but wasn't very cognizant of the fact that it was work lunch hour. We asked for our check well in advance (12:35-40), but did not receive it until 5 min. before 1. Typically, I would give a place another shot after these small instances, but I wasn't wowed by my Louisiana Lobster Roll the first time, and the atmosphere is kind of dark and loud anyway. There are too many great places nearby to waste your time here.

I'm a fan of this place because of proximity and great drink specials. I've gone for brunch, which has a good selection of dishes and a killer blood orange mimosa. I highly recommend the huevos rancheros. For typical dinner fare, I do enjoy the veggie lasagna and polenta corn dogs. Great selection of drinks though I still go for ciders more than anything else and a reasonable price point. Highly recommend if you need a place in the U of R area.

Brunch, lunch or dinner.. All consistently good. Menu has a broad appeal without being overwhelming. The food is neither fancy nor sophisticated, but always a reliable tasty meal. I could eat the ketchup with a straw and be perfectly happy. Noise level can be a bit much if the bar area is full, but we're usually not there that late :-)

What a great experience! Dani was our waitress and she was great. She did an awesome job describing the specials and menu. Started with the crab and and shrimp nachos. Everyone and kids loved it! I had the King fish special tonight which was very tasty and fresh. Love the atmosphere in the place. Highly recommend it.

Maybe want to give this a five. It's really close. I was disappointed because at 9 o'clock on Sunday night they were out of the special I wanted (I think that was an unrealistic expectation on my part). The pork belly and bacon nachos are MARVELOUS! Get them. Sweet, salty, bacon-y, yummy. Not a big ole mess, but a well put together bunch of complimentary tastes. Served on homemade potato chips was perfect. Next we had the grilled avocado salad. Another winner! The combination of fresh tastes - the lemon vinaegrette, the smoky avocado, the crunch of the salad...really good. We finished with the mascarpone donuts - you guessed it - another great combination of flavors. The donuts were hot and freshly tossed in cinnamon sugar at our table. Our service was totally on point too. I will be back! Oh - on a Sunday night at 9 o'clock, they were still busy. Totally understandable.

This place has left such an impression that I have been compelled to write this review immediately after coming back from this place. We'll start with what this place did well. First of all, carrying Hardywood beer is always a plus. Signals that the bar is great. The Louisiana lobster roll was great. Full of flavor, and the addition of alfalfa sprouts gave it a distinctly pleasant taste. Oh, and the decor was definitely homey with nice booths. Okay, now for why we can say that I left this place with the feeling "I'm over this". First of all, let's talk about the apps. The shrimp and crab nachos were good, but the cheese was not melted, and the chips were definitely fried on site while being too oily. What probably happened was, the dish wasn't heated all the way as it should have and was left sitting at the hot line waiting for the app. Now to that other app, Seared Scallops and Crispy Pork Belly over Minty Greek Yogurt topped with Kiwi and Watermelon Salsa. The scallops were cooked perfectly expect there was no seasoning on it, but the pork belly definitely made up for it. it's just a shame that perfectly seared scallops were not seasoned, such a rookie mistake. Now the entrees. I already mentioned the Lobster Roll; so let's talk about the Rib Gouda Mac. As someone has mentioned earlier here, the ribs aren't just dry, they're beef jerky dry. It was so tough and unpleasant to chew on, that I basically had to pull the ribs off of the Gouda Mac plate and put it on another plate. A waitress came up to me asking how things were, and I told her that the ribs were dry, and she responded with "do you want more sauce for your ribs". Like what? How does sauce make dry ribs better again? Is she going to give me a steamer then and let it just soak and magically not be dry then? Well finally she took it back, and the manager came back with a new set of ribs and apologized. At first, the ribs were decent in the sense that it was moist but not tender at all. They probably use some pretty cheap meat, which I would expect form a $16 dish. After eating the ribs from the thin part to the thicker part, something became clear. The ribs were undercooked. The ribs that were turned back once were pink. Very disappointing. That was the last straw, and the ribs were forever sentenced to the small appetizer plate to be never touched again. On the bright side, the Gouda Mac was amazing. Very unique, and I would order it again, without the ribs. And finally to the last disaster of the night. The great Hardywood blonde was found to have a little winged swimmer enjoying all it's deliciousness at the end of the meal. To be honest. I can't necessarily blame them for the fly, because crap happens, but after the unseasoned seared scallops and the dry then partially raw ribs, I was just over it. I mentioned the fly to my waitress, and she just offered to replace the beer after all that has happened when I was getting the check, and I said no. No offer for a comp, which should have happened after the ribs, but none to be offered. The waitress with all of her innocence still came back with another beer right when I was getting up to leave. Maybe she should have offered to comp my check, but none to be seen until I was outside the restaurant stopped by a manager, who admittedly said that it was too late for a comp after I signed the credit card receipt. It's sad that this place was so highly recommended to me by my friend. Maybe he just ate the lobster roll, but everything was just a disaster and just makes me sick. Maybe I should just induce myself to vomit to avoid any kind of food poisoning from the undercooked ribs and/or fly in my beer. Definitely not worth $32. It would have been better to just gone to McDonalds and get a McRib sandwich and get some Easy Mac. On the other hand, the bar looked pretty nice, and there were a bunch of young adults drinking there with what seemed like a pretty decent selection.

I love toast. This place is fantastic! I've been here twice for brunch, and tried a few different things. "The Chicken and the Egg" (a fried chicken biscuit with sausage gravy and a poached egg) is phenomenal. They also make a really great Bloody Mary. I don't live in this part of town, but I go out of my way to come here.

I've been meaning to try Toast for awhile but never got a chance to. Overall, I was pretty happy with the experience and would go back. The restaurant was actually bigger than I imagined it would be. I'm used to the smaller hole in the wall places in the fan area of Rva so the open space was a welcome surprise. We arrived just before 7pm and we were just in time for happy hour. Decent happy hour but the local drafts weren't on special. Wine was relatively cheap though. After doing my research on yelp and seeing what recommendations others had, we decided to go with the burgers. I had the "My favorite" which was pretty awesome. Apparently the chef came up with the idea himself I think it was a blend of different meats, topped with bacon and a fried egg! I also tried the original as well which was pretty solid. The burgers are served on a brioche bun which I LOVE. I ordered the sweet potato tots which I actually thought were underwhelming. Too sweet for my taste. The sauces were a little off as well. I had a good dining experience and would recommend the burgers and there is a pretty good selection of drinks as well.

Worst waste of time and money ever. Waited 10 minutes simply to place a drink order. While the beer and wine selection was good...that was the only thing positive about my visit. Ordered polenta veggie corn dogs as appetizer...another 15 minute wait. I ordered the fish tacos. The rice served with them was mushy and bland. I couldnt eat the tacos because the fish had bones in them! When I inquired with the waitress she appologized and offered dessert as compensation. I declined reporting I was hungry and had not had dinner. When the bill came I was still charged for what I could not eat. The knife in my silverware had crust on it prior to my use...and she did not keep drinks full. Over all took over two hours to simply have dinner and appetizer. Ill never go back...bad service bad food

This is our fourth and last time going here. We came in for a Sunday lunch and sat at the bar. After 10 minutes we were finally noticed and given menus but no drink order was taken. After finally getting beers we ordered lunch. The food (turkey Reuben and meatloaf sandwich) was average at best served with cold fries. Two beers and an average lunch with lax service for $36 is all you need to know as to why we will not go back.

After seeing a rave review in the Richmond paper my husband and I decided to go to Toast for brunch. I had to give this a 2 star review because of the service not the food. We decided to sit at the bar instead of waiting for a table. Many of the people at the bar were waiting for a table. We waited a good 15 minutes before anyone came to take our orders including drinks. Up to that point we just sat there. We ordered our drinks, the donuts and our breakfast. We got our drinks fairly quick but never got our donuts. In my mind they should have come out fairly quick. After another 20 minutes plus we asked if our food would be out soon. The waiter/bartender asked what name it was in (really?) and came back and said we were the 3rd ticket. Interstingly about a minute later our food was in front of us. I told him that since we hadn't gotten our donuts we didn't want them. He looked at me like I had 2 heads. I said "I guess you forgot we ordered the donuts". He said "Yes, I forgot". He never said he was sorry and really had an attitude about it. He just didnt care. Our breakfasts were very good but the service was horrible. We will try it one more time. If the service is the same we will never go back, I will write another review and I will pass the word about the terrible service.

This place defies logic. When you first walk in you are greeted with wooden finishes and industrial styling. Then you are handed a wooden menu that steps the game up. The evening started with a parmesan truffle fries which stand out with the home made ketchup. The chicken chili had a fresh hearty taste that could use a little spice; but is far above most competition. The meal ended with a modern take on an old classic. The "Sloppy Joseph" features a mix of curried morroccan lamb and chorizo. Sweet and savory on a brioche bun. The unique food and stylish dining atmosphere make me leave this place a well-deserved five stars.

Toast is a pretty good gastropub. It has a decent selection of beer and cocktail drinks. The atmosphere is really relax and wouldn't mind going again with friends and just hang out. I had their turkey panini with their parmesean fries. They were tasty but nothing spectacular.

While the service was great and atmosphere warm, inviting, and unpretentious, I won't be returning... at least not for brunch. I am a HUGE eggs benedict fan, especially when crab meat is involved. So I was super excited to get the Monterrey Benedict... Until I ate it. Almost everything was cold. The muffin hadn't been warmed, the turkey was cold, avocado (small slices) was cold... The poached egg was warm, but that was it. Even the hollandaise was only meh. The most disappointing thing was the "lump crab meat." It was a measly sprinkle on top, as a garnish, and was shredded. It also tasted like cat food. Definitely not fresh. The meal is also served with asparagus (two, overcooked spears, also more of a garnish) and while tasty, overcooked hash browns (I don't prefer the brown crunchy stuff). I ate my meal, but only because I was starving and didn't want to wait for anything else (it wasn't inedible, just not very good). My boyfriend was also not overly thrilled with his banana chocolate chip pancakes and sausage. When I told the waitress what was wrong with the food, the manager came over and was attentive and very nice. It's too bad the food wasn't great because otherwise, it seems like a cool place. Maybe dinner will be better.

After one visit, my impression was overall very positive. Clean, contemporary atmosphere. Ambitious beer selection on tap. Excellent truffle fries with parmesan. The crab mac 'n cheese was a little light on the crab but good enough to get me back soon to try out their burger.

Great brunch! My husband and I stopped in for brunch. The staff was friendly and the service was quick. We got the bacon fritters to start, which were delicious! My husband got the brioche French toast with strawberries. He loved it! I got the Chicken and the Egg - fried chicken breast on a biscuit, topped with gravy and an egg sunny-side up. So much food and very tasty! We will definitely be back for brunch and hope to try dinner here soon!

Mmmm... Toast is such an easy place for me to go, and the food is almost always delicious. I have been there four times so far, and I have had only one dish that was not amazing. (I agree with an earlier poster that the Sloppy Joseph is not great). However, I have had several dishes that were delicious, and their drinks are strong as well. I also like their prices- good food at decent prices. Also- I do not like their menus (they are paper that is rubber-banded to a piece of wood). I just don't like their look. That is obviously a small detail that doesn't keep me from going back though!

Overall, good but not great. They do have an interested menu. Atmosphere is nice, comfortable tables and good service. I expected the food to be a little better, perhaps they try to get a little too fancy. We much preferred 'The Tavern' just down the road.

I wasn't expecting a whole lot from this strip mall American establishment but I walked away a big fan. The ambiance is nice, our service was really great, our server really knew the menu and anticipated our needs. We ordered guacamole and it was better than every local Mexican place I've tried. It was fresh, with the perfect proportion of onion, tomato, garlic and acidity. I was so impressed with the guac after the app, I decided to order a turkey avocado sandwich with the very same guacamole enhancing the deliciousness. Yummm. What really took my opinion of this place over the edge was the most delicious homemade ketchup accompanying our fries. A very simple thing, but something that shows this place really strives for the extra touches to make an impression. We asked our server what was in it and she asked to chef only to come back and say it was a secret family recipe and if he told us, he'd have to kill us. Toast is an all American establishment done right, with special notes that make it stand out over the rest. It is a welcome addition to the west end dining scene. Bravo.

Went to Toast today for brunch, based on a recommendation from a friend. This place was awesome. Very modern and pleasant interior/atmosphere. The service staff was great, but the food stole the show. We ordered bacon fritters for an appetizer. The fritters were excellent and it comes with two dipping sauces: maple syrup and a chive aioli. The syrup was not that great as there isnt enough maple/smokey flavor from the bacon in the fritter to warrant a syrup dip but the aioli is phenomenal. We then ordered the chicken biscuits and gravy, the french toast, and the monterrey eggs benedict. The french toast was out of this world. Super sweet but amazing with either the strawberries or the creme anglaise. The chicken biscuits and gravy tasted amazing as the sausage grease was used to flavor the chicken so its a plethora of flavors. The monterrey benedict were delicious because who doesnt love crab and avocado topping poached eggs and hollandaise sauce? I will definitely be going back and I want everyone to be sure to ask for Justin as their server. He is a great server and very personable.

Lovely atmosphere and delicious, freshly prepared food. Waitstaff was great, too. Had the turkey burger and it was juicy and perfectly seasoned. Went for the first time a couple of weeks ago. Not too bad - LOVED the change in aesthetics! Some of the old wait staff from "Shitty Limits" (mostly bartenders) need to go as their service before was way below par... you shouldn't have to sit at an uncrowded bar for more than 5-10 minutes to be greeted and without a smile ... but the food was good at a late hour and once the guys (not gals) behind the bar took notice, we were good to go. Replace the ladies with more attentive ones and you've got it made! You never know who the big tippers will be ... there's a reason we stopped going to and started calling it "Shitty Limits" ... it wasn't just the food, it was the service, as well. Will go back after a month or so to see if service has improved. I have high hopes for Toast!

The decor is nice and the waiter wants to be helpful, just seems a little inexperienced One of my friends in our group of five had her water delivered with a long black hair on it. My "panini" with pulled chicken, muenster, assorted greens and apricot-dijon sauce consisted of good bread, an unpleasant mix of light and dark meat that was clearly pulled off a rotisserie chicken in small shreds and had little taste, a single sliver of muenster, and three pieces of what appeared to be baby spinach. The apricot sauce was nowhere in sight. I did try the homemade ketchup and it was . . . interesting. The people that wanted ketchup on their fries asked for regular ketchup as the homemade stuff was very sweet, with a distinct taste of cinammon. The place is pretty and has some interesting menu items, but, right now, the execution just isn't there.

I love this restaurant.. I've been there twice and will definitely go back.. Both times I got the salmon and it was so so delicious and fresh.. The shrimp and crab nachos were different but very tasty.. It's a must try.

I may go again but honestly, since the items I can eat on the menu are so limited, I may not return and instead go to a restaurant that doesn't have goat/blue/gouda cheese on every single item on the menu.

so my wife and went here for the first time today to have some brunch. Great atmosphere, fantastic service, awesome food, and really not that expensive for the quality of what we ordered. I can promise that we will be coming back for brunch (they make the Bloody Marys pretty spicy!) and support a business that reminds us of our favorite places in Austin where we met.

Richmond doesn't get better than this. Amazing menu and specials, with a great beer list. Great for a romantic dinner, and lunch with the kids. If you haven't had the Parmesan truffle fries...you are missing out.

These guys are fantastic. The food. The booze. The company. Everything about this bar/restaurant is great. I am so happy I left DC for a weekend in Richmond.

I had the rockfish and it was done to perfection! We got crab cake appetizers and they were quite tasty. Service was great!

Sat at the bar my last two visits and had a wonderful experience. Delicious appetizers (pimento cheese wontons) and fell in love with "Punch Drunk Love" cocktail - try it!

With sauce.

This was my first time here. I had the meat lovers omelette and it was excellent. I sat at the bar and the service was friendly and reliable. I recommend this place if you're looking for a great brunch place. It's a little loud due to the popularity and good food but it's worth it.
