I ordered the sopes with carne asada and they were delicious. However I wish they would have had more of the red sauce on them and a bit of sour cream. They give you one complimentary basket of chips and salsa. The salsa is homemade but wasn't very flavorful. For me unlimited chips and salsa should be a given at a Mexican restaurant. Refried beans were also homemade but very watery and needed more salt. The Jamaica was good but a little more bitter than most restaurants serve which was fine with me but just a forewarning. Our waitress Donna was very kind and attentive. They brought out a coloring book and tub of crayons for our child which was much appreciated.

After a long day of travel & sightseeing, we went into LaCueva because it was right next to motel. Nicely appointed decor, a very helpful server (Donna), and good fajitas. Nice end to our day!

This place was great! I was apprehensive, being in Middle Utah and all, but I was very pleasantly surprised. For Torrey, this was dang good and for most of Utah it can certainly stand it's own. The word is that owner is on site and he does play an active role in the place, which shows that he cares and he does it well. He talks to every table and helps the staff out at every turn. The staff was capable, nice and did a great job. I had to go to the attached mini market to get my beer (not complaining and weird liquor laws be dammed! I got two bottle of import beer for $4.90! Take that 400% markup restaurants!) and walk it back over and the server opened it, brought me glasses and set me up. Couldn't have been happier. We ordered a combo plate for each of us and had the Chili Relleno and Gordita with rice and beans! It was wonderful! The relleno was HUGE! The Mole Chicken was delicious. Savory and sweet. Their Guacamole was fresh and homemade the salsa was flavorful and the extra hot she brought out was just that. Extra hot. The chips were also homemade. Nicely done too. We loved it all. I would go back. Wish they were in SLC.

We tried to eat here.... took forever to be seated... forever for a server to come to our table... meanwhile, other tables were getting their food, one plate at a time. No water, chips... nothing. Finally a guy (not the server) came over and asked about drinks. He said he could go buy us something from the convenience store and bring it to our table. So odd. How would he have any idea what to buy or bring? He disappeared, too. We finally just got up and left. I adore Mexican food but they were either severely understaffed or the regular staff were captured by aliens or something was amiss the night we were here. We ended up at the burger joint in town.

Every time we come to Capitol Reef we stop here. We crave it all the time until we come again! The cheese chile rellano is fantastic. We get it every time. Fresh chips and homemade salsas with different spice levels are delicious. We also love their barbacoa meat. The service is always great. Art is the man. He always takes great care of us and makes the entire dining experience so enjoyable. The atmosphere is cozy and inviting. One of the best black beans and rice sides I have ever had. Flan is homemade fresh and stupid good. My husband says every time he comes in he feels like a Mexican bandit :). In a nut shell, do yourself a favor and get in here for some food now.

Everything was great. Server Donna was awesome - went out of her way to take care of our big party. Food was wonderful - nothing left on the table. Would recommend to anyone traveling through Capitol Reef. Convenience store attached to the same building so you don't have to make two trips for items you need.

Had the asada burrito. Not bad at all. Passing through this small town and wasn't expecting much. Turned out being tasty

We were pleasantly surprise when we had a late dinner here. The staff was very nice, food was tasty and plentiful. I would recommend the burrito with shredded beef. The only negative i would give this place is that better lighting is needed in the evening to read the menu..

Really enjoyed this meal. The ingredients were all very fresh, and the salsa and the tortillas were both a little different from your average Mexican restaurant but much better. Our waitress was very polite and had a very good attitude but she did seen to be a bit green, and forgot to bring our chips until our food came. Having to buy your beer next door meant a better selection than your average Mexican restaurant but better prices. Overall, much better experience than your average Mexican place.

On the Torrey, Utah scale, it's a 5-star. Compared to other places around the country, I'd say a 3.5. The chips and salsa seemed fresh but weren't anything to jump up and down about. My diet soda had a little bit of a soapy taste to it, so I can't complain it wasn't clean... but I didn't send it back either. I got the chicken & cheese stuffed Chili Relleno. Wasn't a huge chili, and I couldnt tell if it was fresh, but it did the trick to fill my belly. I give it three stars but more towards a 3.5. I tried to go to Slacker's Burger Joint first but they were closed early for some reason. NOTE: ALCOHOL IS BYOB FROM THE CONVENIENCE STORE NEXT DOOR.

I had Pollo de Rojo. It was a generous chicken breast in red sauce. The sauce was indeed very red, but it had no tang or zip to it. Neither did the salsa. In reading other reviews, I see there are various levels of spiciness to be had. I was not offered that option. If I had been, I would have gone for max spice. I like spiciness that drains my sinuses. I am from S. California, where I regularly eat real Mexican cuisine. Just because I look like a Gringa doesn't mean I eat like one. Okay, I went back for a second dinner. I asked for it to be spicy and was brought a side of 2 hot salsas. The place is redeemed and I raised my 3 stars to 4.

We stopped by after some high, hot and dry hiking in Capitol Reef national park. Suffering from visions of margaritas in salt rimmed glasses, imagine my surprise when I found they don't serve them here. Beer and taquitos then, and they were just fine. This is a funny little place because when we ordered our beer the waitress went to the attached convenience store and pulled them out of the cooler. I suppose that really is convenient, and we did get frosty glasses. Satisfactory stop.

Good mexican food, as good as you can find in torrey, utah. We got the shrimp fajitas and grilled chicken with guac. Both were very good. After a full day of hiking, we were happy to have found this little place.

Although the food was pretty good the service at La Cueva Restaurante Mexicano was REALLY bad and our waitress was really very strange. She refused to bring us any drinks or chips and salsa until our whole party arrived and she was constantly running around frantic as if the restaurant was really busy, although it was practically empty. We waited a LONG time for our drinks and chips and salsa and waited even longer for our food. It seemed like there was only two people working that night--our crazy waitress and the chef. Despite the delays the food was actually pretty good. I enjoyed the shredded beef enchiladas and the chips and salsa were also good. My companions also enjoyed their food but felt the same about the bad service. Strangely La Cueva Restaurante Mexicano doesn't have a liquor license so I couldn't enjoy a margarita with my meal. Our waitress claimed it would cost them $10,000/month for the insurance required for a liquor license which seemed totally implausible... But maybe she was right, I don't know... If the service had been better I'd be giving La Cueva Restaurante Mexicano at least four stars but I'm marking it down because of the bad service.

Oh my GOD!!! This Mexican food was amazing! I'm still craving it and I can't have it :(. Do yourself a favor and stop here to eat you will not be let down. Service was wonderful the food was perfect. Could not have asked for a better place to eat on my little motorcycle road trip. Seriously best Mexican food I've ever had!!!!

-Friendly server (wish I caught her name) and owner -As far as alcohol goes, you choose what you want from the convenience store next door and bring it to your table & it's added to your meal -Prompt and friendly service. I highly recommend the puerco en

I didn't expect much from this place going in. Given that the entire town had like 4 restaurants, I decided to give it a shot and was pleasantly surprised. I ordered one of their seafood platters and it was good and well portioned. The meal also came with homemade tortillas and chips and salsa. The owner of this place also owns the gas station/convenience store next door, so it was interesting to see him help me out at both places.

  • Nathan R.

I'm from California and so the flavor and style here was not good to me. The driest cheese enchilada i've ever seen. As a matter of fact everything was too dry. On the bright side, food was fresh and the Restaurant is beautiful.

    (2)
  • David B.

Good, but not great. Traditional Mexican food served in large portions at a price that that's sure to please! The flavors, esp. sauces, are not subtle. The freshly-made chips and salsa are good. The guacamole is very good. The rest is what you'd expect at a decent Mexican restaurant.

    (3)
  • K H.

The food here isn't bad, but it wasn't good either. It was very average. The refried beans were dried out and crusty, and the salsa was kind of blah. The service, however, was pretty terrible, and I'm not a picky person. When you're trying to make your destination in good time, you really don't want to wait 20 minutes for someone to bring you chips and take your order. There was one frazzled waitress waiting on the entire restaurant, and she couldn't give good service to everyone.

  • Alan R.

We stopped here for lunch after arriving in Capital Reef after a long drive from Bluff, UT. Fresh made chips and salsa that must have been home made were promptly served. Better Mexican food then I expected to find in Torrey. All fresh ingredients and large portions. Prices were fair, especially for the quality served. Very friendly waitress who brought us chilled beer mugs for the beers that I got from the attached convenience store.

We have been regulars at this place for the past three summers. The food is delicious and authentic, my favorite is the pork in chili verde sauce. They put such heart and soul into the preparation, and the service is just wonderful. It's hard to believe such a high quality restaurant can be found in such an isolated place.

Very good! We were hungry for Mexican food while on a trip through Utah. We stopped at La Cueva, and had a very delicious meal. Both salsas were fresh and with the right amount of heat. I had a chicken enchilada and pork taco, with black beans and rice. The beans and rice were nothing special, but the pork taco and enchilada were really good. The pork was especially flavorful. My husband had a pork taco and cheese enchilada. He enjoyed his meal as well. The service was good. We were seated quickly and had an enjoyable evening.

We arrived around 7:30 pm and were delighted to find a Mexican restaurant. The service was excellent and the food delicious. I had enchiladas with roja sauce....some of the best I have had anywhere. My husband had the masa gordita with shredded beef and he was very pleased. Authentic food, attention to details with our service. We recommend it and will return on our next trip to Canyonlands.

I stop by for vacation at this restaurant, the place was clean, friendly staff and great food. I had the enchiladas and the cheese was very tasty, I met the owner and I can tell he puts the best plate on your table. I strongly recommend this place. Everything was perfect.

Great relleno and mole. Fresh ingredients homemade sauce. Big plus, bring your own drink or beer. They will give you a glass of ice. Will go back if in the area.

One of the worst restaurants ever. It was a saturday evening and there was not a thing going well at this restaurant. There were 2-3 other families apart from us who were waiting to be seated and waiters didn't even care abt us. It took 15 minutes to get us seated and things inside were far from busy. The waitresses didn't care to offer water. We finally had to ask for it after 10 mins of waiting. Then it took another 10-15 mins to get the waitresses attention to bring us a menu. In the meantime, we were watching other frustrated families walking out of the restaurant. I would totally understand if the restaurant was busy. But it was not. Totally incapable waitresses. I would completely blame the management for this pathetic service. The food, when it finally arrived, after 45 mins, was better than I had expected. Refills didn't happen without repeated reminder. No apologies for delay either. Overall, shockingly horrible experience. I will never visit this place again.

Not very good chips taste like old grease, watery salsa, mole poblano was dry chicken breast with sauce, rice was greasy, black beans and corn tortillas were good. What you'd expect from a gas station restaurant

This restaurant seems to have moved nearby the Howard Johnson's Motel. We looked for it at the junction of US 12 as the Yelp map shows and it was not there. I give the restaurant a C+ grade. The food was pretty bland. I had to dump a ton of the chip salsa on my food to make it spicy enough. The refried beans were pretty tasteless. And, typically Mexican food is served HOT and both my husband and my plates were pretty tepid. With this said, we left full...and the prices didn't break the bank.

Stop in on the way to Escalante without knowing anything about the place. Food was very good, and overall much more than we expected in the middle of no where. The owner/manager/waiter.. runs the show as others have mentioned. Very friendly, while service was slow, he was as attentive as he could be, and you could tell he was busy. The food was very good, not the best Mexican I've ever had, but delicious and flavorful. Home made tortillas and salsa were a nice touch for the fajitas. Green chile pork was also very tasty. Well worth a stop in if you're passing through or staying in the area. Support the small business owner working his tail off.

We found this place when we were in search of any place to stay. Not having made the best plans over memorial day weekend, we found ourselves driving for hours looking for just any room to spend the night and recharge! Hidden Falls Hotel was booked to capacity, but we met Aram, the owner of La Cueva. He helped us find a place nearby (which was a welcome relief after being turned away from 5-6 motels with no vacancy signs). The next day, we went to capitol reef for a few day hikes. Starved, a few hours later, we stopped by this gem of a place. La Cueva boasts the freshest food around Torrey. The tortillas are fresh, the salsas are hand-made (according to patrons' ability to handle different spice levels), and the entrees are simply fabulous. Aram kept coming back to ensure that our table never ran out of chips and salsa, and that there were enough tortillas to go around. The only comparison to this place is Red Iguana in Salt Lake City, but even that amazing restaurant might not be able to hold a candle to the service and quality of La Cueva's cuisine.

We had lunch there late on a weekday. There were few other customers. I got enchiladas. They were definitely not your typical Mexican restaurant (in the US, anyway) enchiladas! They were gaily decorated with shredded greens and white cheese. They were subtly but very well flavored. My wife got the chicken quesadilla and it was similarly decorated and similarly good. The room is attractively decorated, the waiter (owner?) was friendly. What's not to like?

I'll probably never be back in Torrey, Utah, again, which is a terrible shame, because I'd love to go back to this restaurant and pin 5 stars on them based on a second enthusiastic orgy of tamale gorging. The only place in Atlanta metro I've found with tamales this good is at Taqueria Los Hermanos. It's just that, in Atlanta, I can't walk outside in the evening and watch a glorious sunset over a magnificent Western skyline.

Overpriced and overrated. It's attached to a convenience store. The food is authentic, but comparable meals average $8.99 a plate, and these average $15. Save your money and go to Cafe Diablo!

WOW! Where do I begin? I arrived in Torrey in order to attend a business meeting with someone. Little did I know that I was going to stop by La Cueva for the first time too! When my meeting had finished, I told my friend that I was hungry so he recommended I try this place. When I got to the restaurant, there was plenty of parking which for me isn't easy to find since I'm from LA. Anyways, we parked and entered and I was in love with the place already! The Mexican decorations made the restaurant look nice and we automatically were seated by a nice woman. She brought us drinks (water) and asked if we were ready to order just like what any other restaurant waitress would do. After looking through the menu, I decided to give the burrito a try. Right after my first bite, I knew I was coming back!

After a day of hiking, la Cuerva really hit the spot. Chips and salsa (and some guacamole) were perfect. Burritos were tasty, albeit a bit salty, and portions were huge. Be sure to bring your own alcohol if you'd like to drink. There is a convenience store attached where you can choose from a limited selection of beers.

Food tastes great! We were starving after finishing our hike through Sulphur Creek and a hike back to our car... Great service even with one lady serving... They seemed to get packed out of nowhere. I had the chicken quesadilla, some guac which was tasty, and the tortilla soup which was more like a stew with clearish broth but we ate every bite. Not sure if it was because we were starving or if it was actually a unique twist on common tortilla soup. I recommend it, there probably isn't anything much better for miles. :)

Only staying in this location for a couple more days but I will be having my daily dose of Mexican food from this place before we leave. Here's why! Food: This place has the top 5 best tasting chicken fajitas I've ever had. I could seriously move to teasdale from LA, just for this Mexican restaurant. I was really shocked that some small town out of nowhere had this good of Mexican food. I eat Mexican food at least 5 days a week from various places in the worst part of the hood in Long Beach, Santa Ana, LA. This place ranks right up there with the best of the best of LA. The re-fried beans were also very good. The standard salsa tasted fresh and the chips were perfect. We tried a green and the other was orange made with habaneros peppers, as a special request to the waitress for something a little more spicy. Quantity: They weren't cheap on the chicken. Some places give you 80/10 ratio in veggies/chicken. This place gives you tons of chicken. I estimate 50/50 in veggie portions vs chicken. They also give you the standard amount of re-fried beans and rice. Service: The service here was awesome! We came here around 5pm and there were 3 other families eating here. They sat us down immediately with menus and asked us for our drinks. The two waitresses (one was in training) were super nice and very attentive to our needs. They always had a smile and gave you that southern hospitality. They even brought out a sample of, what they described as, two other very hot sauces. They refilled out waters 3 times, and our diet cokes 3 times. Price: Cheap compared to all the other places in Teasdale! if you are going to try cafe diablo, good luck with that. The items on their menu averaged $39++. We walked out at the sticker shock. We also arrived later in the evening an only wanted us to sit outside. Had to fake intestinal flu to bail out of cafe diablo. The three of us eating at La Cueva cost us less than that without tip. Don't go to cafe diablo, unless you want to walk out paying $150+tip. BTW, For the person from Vermont...what do you know of good mexican food? You probably don't even know what a mexican looks like. LOL. For the person complaining about the price. I paid $14 for fajitas here. I pay $15 for Fajitas in LA.... Did you expect del taco prices....You are a moron. For the person from Lathrop, CA. I live in the highest concentration of mexican restaurants in the U.S. Where the fk is lathrop! You're an authority on Mexican food? Another moron. I've had bad mexican food in places like Belgium (In europe) and tons of places in Florida.

Delicioso! Authentic Mexican food in a nice atmosphere - buy your beer at the convenience store next door, friendly staff and owner, great salsa, fajitas were excellent and combo #6 (chile relleno and taco) great too, kids were happy too

We arrived on a Saturday in early September, family of three. The first clue that this was going to be a good experience was the warm bowl of fresh chips and homemade salsa. Our friendly waitress also brought some spicy salsa verde and salsa habanero to try, which was much appreciated. The Puerco en Salsa Verde was the best I've ever had. The meat itself was so tasty and soft and it shredded appropriately with a gentle application of the fork. I stuffed it in a homemade tortilla and swooned. I'm sure the beans and rice were great-- sorry, I'm still in awe of that puerco! Finished it today for lunch and can't wait to go back for more. Beer & Wine -- walk right thru side door into food mart. Buy it there and give to your server in restaurant. This is Utah!

Seriously... Food this good in a roadside restaurant in Utah? Try it, you'll be amazed. The mole.... Service is Okay - not bad, but if they can get it up to the level of the food, wow!

My family and I gave this authentic Mexican restaurant a try while making a visit to the Capitol Reef National Park area of Utah. Nevermind the fact that the manager appears to have his hands way too full and looks like he's running around like a chicken with his head cut off because he definitely has things covered. The manager is the owner and he is also the manager/owner of the nextdoor Howard Johnsons and the convenience store (attached to the restaurant). We definitely got the impression he was trying to save a few bucks by handing out one napkin per person and employing as few people as possible and doing all the work himself, but somehow he managed to pull it all off with a big smile on his face the entire time. He was very pleasant while waiting on all of the tables in the restaurant (and timely). We ordered a chicken taco, chicken enchiladas, tortilla soup, and two cheese quesadillas. All of it was really, really delicious and worthy of a return visit. It seemed a little pricey at first but then we decided it was one of the better-priced local restaurants after visiting some of the other eateries in the surrounding area. So, definitely give this baby a try! Kids will go crazy over the quesadillas.

Who knew? Excellent Mexican food in Utah. And in a rather small town no less. I ordered the Bisteck a la Mexicana (to go) and was rather surprised at how good it was. Not the absolute best version I have ever had, but surprisingly good. A solid 4 stars right there. What bumped it up to 5 stars: - Solid Mexican food in a place as remote as Torrey. - Excellent homemade tortilla chips. - Excellent homemade salsas. - And, excellent service. Anyway, if you are coming from somewhere like LA where you can already get amazing Mexican food...you'll probably still enjoy this place. If you are coming from somewhere else...you are unlikely to find Mexican food this good in, basically, the rest of Utah.

I brought 2 dozen people to the restaurant in late June 2012. Service was exceptional. Servings were large and delicious - huge pieces of chicken, beef and pork in yummy sauces. Special dietary needs were accomodated. Most of us took dessert home and ate it as breakfast the next morning! I would definitely recommend this restaurant for hearty mexican fare!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
