Very good little Japanese restaurant, great atmosphere, ton Katsu has always been our favorites the bento plates whether it be salmon or steak it was delish! The dynamite is always great you have scallops, and all kinds of other seafood too die for, sushi is always fresh! A pretty decent pricing on the entrees and sushi.

Candy roll is fantastic and service is second to none. I'm honestly disappointed in myself that I've spent money at any other sushi restaurant while this place was open!

Decor is cute. Service is good, but they forgot our order of edamame. Most of the sushi was enjoyable except for the tamago. I'm pretty sure it was rotten, it tasted and smelled like vinegar and the after taste was like I ate someone's rotten sock. I only took one bite and left the rest. Their spicy tuna however is really good and so is their udon. Agedashi Tofu was a 4/5, Gyoza was a 5/5. The restroom's toilet paper is SO SOFT. Like a cloud on your bottom.

HANDS DOWN best sushi restaurant in ALL of Utah!!! My boyfriend and I were regulars when we lived in Layton! One of the waitresses even remembered us! Everyone greets you, including the sushi chefs! Its a cute little place with a nice ambience! They have chinese lanterns hanging from the ceiling and cute asian decorations everywhere. During the holidays they even hang holiday appropriate decorations! The sushi at Osaka puts me on cloud 9 no matter what we ordered! Our regulars included: Hawaiian Pokey (BOMB!) Squid Salad (BF LOVES this one!) Heritage Roll (It's like an explosion in your mouth!) Rock and Roll (LOVE IT! No rice! :D) Probably one of the few things that kept me in Utah!

Hidden gem! I was reluctant to try a sushi joint in Layton Ut! I am glad I tried it. I live downtown SLC & go to numerous sushi joints in the city on a weekly basis and none are as good as Osaka. The avacado bomb is a must, it's my favorite appetizer hands down. Great sushi I drive up to Layton every-other week just to eat there.

OMG this place is gooooood! I normally judge a Japanese place by their miso soup and I was blown away. I had their Hawaiian pokey salad and I am hooked!! I couldn't stop thinking about it the whole time I was here in Layton. Love this place!

Quite good. White hamachi was excellent, and the unique rolls were very creative and appeal to a wide range of tastes!

  • Danyel S.

I love Osaka sushi!! They have original rolls and not just the same old stuff you can get anywhere. I absolutely love the Mexican Crunch! It is always fresh and portions are good. Some of the special rolls can be a bit pricey but worth it! If you find yourself in between SLC and Ogden and craving sushi, this is your spot!! Other reviewers are right about the service not being good, but get takeout. You won't be disappointed!

Almost a 5. Cleanest and most consistent sushi this side of Vegas. Service is almOst always top notch. Lots of special rolls and dishes with good flavor profiling and very fresh fish. Not cheap by any means, but if you've got an extra 100 laying around for the two of you and have a hankering for good sushi, here's your girl. Picoso, black tiger, Vegas and a red rock will take care of your less exposed sushi guests. Eat here.

The service was unbelievably quick, and the sushi was fantastic. The Candy Roll, New Vegas, and Airforce rolls were phenomenal.

We've been frequenting Osaka for many years because their sushi is excellent. Their staff is generally very good - mostly hits with few misses. Their sushi chefs are always very friendly and even willing to be creative and make something not on the menu if you ask. The Grand Canyon roll is amazing, my husband has always been pleased with their uni and for dessert we always finish with the "Screaming O". If you do not have the Screaming O while you're there you have missed out on their best menu item.

Osaka Sushi is the worst sushi place in Utah for me so far. It is a very hybrid Korean and Japanese sushi place so the flavor is very lacking. The fish here is not the best either. Decoration is decent and prices are about average. My wife and I ate here as a treat, but we left very disappointed. We started things off with calamari which was a big mistake as they serve just leg pieces that are not that great and few in number. The sauce they give you is like soy sauce with vinegar (horrible). My wife had tempura udong which ended up the Korean style and not the Japanese way. The tempura was average at best. I had the 7 piece Nigiri sushi with spicy tuna roll and we shared a Hot Summer roll. The spicy tuna roll was the worst I have ever eaten. Really bad flavor and tasted not like fish. The Nigiri was just thick slices of Hamachi, tuna, and salmon over rice. It was not made very well and the fish did not have the proper flavor or texture. Last the Hot Summer roll had cilantro, which I wish I noticed before I got it, which destroyed the flavor profile of the roll. Hot Summer roll also had too much planko crumbs and tasted almost like the spicy tuna roll with no similar ingredients. Overall very slow service with a decent interior and a not that great food. I would say stay in SLC and Park City for good sushi, but for great Japanese food go to Hanamaru in Ogden.

The BEST sushi in Utah... The service is fast and the staff is friendly. The Original Vegas roll is the BOMB!!!!! Try the Mexi-crunch, it's to die for.. We come here at least 2-3 times a month. They give you a 20% discount when you come back within 10 days. Well worth it.... We take our kids here and they love the teriaki chicken. 5 STARS all the way! Great job guys...

The sushi here was good, the service was really good. Tried this place because it was down the street from my hotel and was very happy when I left.

Best sushi ever! Fresh ingredients..yes it is in the higher price range but come on people you are paying for so much more than just the food. The service is great and the staff is very friendly.

I ordered the California and Philadelphia roll. The sushi was very good! The service was friendly and quick. They do have a $10 minimum on all orders, which was a bit inconvenient, but not too much of a problem.

I really love this restaurant, the food is excellent and tasty and the service is great. i would have never imagined that such a good japanese restaurant would be hidden near a neighborhood mall.

  • Jessica L.

Their food deserves 4-5 stars (Sushi anyway). It's their service that brings them down to 3 stars (and on some visits would be more like 1 or 2 stars). I really enjoyed their Miss Saigon roll on my last visit. The cold unfiltered diamond sake is a good choice. The prices are on the high side but may be worth the cost for take out on occasion.

After dining at this place a few times, I finally decided write a review for the place. This place offers half-decent Japanese food in the area, definitely not the best I ever had, but choices are limited in the area. The best thing about this place is the restaurant décor, they use a pretty modern design, everything feeling pretty comfortable when you first entered, and any table you sat down won't feel encapsulated or isolated. Next is the service, the waitress were always nice to us, although we had some billing issues a few time, they fixed it right away without questions. Sadly the most important part of a restaurant failed to amazes me, and that is food. The side dishes such as salad and miso soups were at the generic level, tasted about the same in other places. The cooked dishes such as Teriyaki Chicken and Katsudon were somewhere between disappointing to mediocre. The chickens were a little too dry and slightly overcooked. The pork loins were fried too long and I actually had a hard time chewing them. The sushi dishes are probably the only decent category. Any nigiri sushi can be made into a hand roll, so I had the hand rolls and some of the special rolls. I actually enjoyed the hand roll, since there were enough fish and not too much rice like the ones you would get in all-you-can-eat ones. The special rolls mostly mixed with enough favor from sauces with imitation crab in the center, but the raw fishes they served were definitely frozen and de-frosted. It's pretty common in Utah though, so I'm not surprised. Given the area and limited selections on Japanese food, this place is half-decent at best. I would still come back for the sushi dishes, since choices are limited and they offer a 20% discount if you come back within a week and 10% discount within 2 weeks. But I'm definitely not coming back for the cooked dishes.

My first but not my last visit. The service was good but the sushi was excellent . I started with twist the mussels absolutely melts in my mouth and the sauce was beyond divine. Then I moved on to the main rolls. My favorite was as follows: the roller coaster roll. When you take it into your mouth you start off with a hint of refreshing lemon followed my a a nice light fresh tuna finished off with a pop of spicy sauce and jalapeño that pulls it all together. Nothing like riding a roller coaster in your mouth.

I've been here a few times just because it's close. Overall this place is not bad. This is probably one of the better sushi restaurants in the area. That being said, a lot of their rolls aren't the best. They mix in too many sauces in my opinion. However, the nigiri and sashimi are decent and the amount of fish they give you is actually pretty good. If I wanted good sushi I would go down to Salt Lake, but location wise this is good for the area.

From out of town. Walked over to the Osaka because it had a good rating. The sushi was average and service below average. Food took 40 mins to get and I had to ask for chopsticks.

I really wanted to like Osaka Sushi since I love sushi and it's nearby but, the love never happened. I rarely give out one star to anything but in this case I might actually be performing a public health service by doing so. Let me explain... I wanted to take my wife out for a little comfort food. She is from Japan and occasionally craves dishes from her home country- who doesn't. We decided to give Osaka Sushi a try based off of the four star rating on Yelp and the fact that the restaurant received some hype on the local news. Both my wife and I have had sushi many times before, too many to attempt to count. First of all the waitresses and staff were friendly and attentive and the general atmosphere was that of your generic modern sushi /Japanese restaurant. We arrived about 10 minutes after opening on a Friday evening so it was not busy. We ordered edamame (soy beans) and deep fried tofu for a starter. The edamame was fresh and the fried tofu itself was good but, it was served with gyoza sauce instead of the usual ponzu sauce. The gyoza sauce stole the delicate flavor of the tofu souring the dish. It wasn't bad but I could have been great with the correct sauce. Next came our nigiri (traditional sushi, a slab of fish on top of rice) order- maguro (tuna) and ika (squid) nigiri. The maguro seemed fresh and tasted good but the ika was close to rancid. Both orders left a very fishy taste in my mouth that I have never experienced before with shushi, maguro or ika. The aftertaste would not wash out with beer or water. I even ate some raw ginger to try and cleanse my pallet but nothing worked. We quickly moved on to maki thinking it would be a little better. It was, but not by much. My wife ordered Ama-ebi which was also fishy, like shrimp that is left out too long or boiled then frozen then boiled again and then left out for several hours. The maguro maki (basic tuna wrapped in rice and seaweed) was bad. The rice was dry and chewy and the tuna was old once again. The only decent dishes we ate were the Nyn-maki and the Oyshi-maki. They were okay but we found the two to be just as good as the California style maki at Smith's or Target. After that we asked for our bill and left- with a very fishy taste on our mouths and a queasy feeling in our intestines (not to mention $116.00 lighter in the wallet!). Again, I really wanted to like Osaka Sushi- I simply can't. It was just bad. The fish was old and the dishes tasted like they were made yesterday and served today. The key to sushi is freshness and Osaka is missing it. Maybe it was just a bad night. Maybe it's extra hard to get fresh fish in Utah. Maybe the chefs are new or we simply picked the wrong things to order. I'll never know because I'm not going back to Osaka Sushi. Ever.

We keep trying to find a better place for Sushi in the area and keep coming back to Osaka. The location & atmosphere aren't the best, but the food is consistently fresh and delicious. The service has always been above average and the prices are fair. I'll keep trying other places because I don't like to keep going to the same place over and over but I have a feeling we'll keep coming back to Osaka.

We always have great service and Osaka has the best sushi around! My favorite Sushi Restaurant in Utah!

The sushi was very good, but I am taking away a star because the service was very slow and he prices and not that great. About $1-2 more expensive per roll than my usual place.

The food was very good, good first experience with sushi. The service was alright and it turned out to be a lot pricier than expected.

Best of all was the Avocado Bomb and the Ultra Tuna. Make sure to keep the regular menu as the rolls in there are less expensive and you would have missed the Ultra Tuna if you let the waitress take the menu. They must be trained to take the menu so you order the More pricey rolls on the specials insert . . . I had to keep getting up from my table to get the regular menu and the waitress would immediately take it again . . . frustrating!

I think 1.5 is more on the accurate side for my dinning experience. Three of us went there on a week night, there are not many people in the restaurant. probably 2 other tables. We all ordered the chicken bento box since we have checked out their sushi counter, the fish does not look fresh. when we first ordered, we asked if we can substitute the CA rolls with other stuff since one of us does not eat sushi, the waitress immediately said they will charge more (w/o asking us what we wanted it). when we got the food, it comes with 2 gyoza, half CA roll, meat of your choice (we got chicken), rice, tempura. The gyoza is the best. not the best I've had, but it was yummy. the CA roll is ok, does not seem like it is freshly made, but it tasted ok. the chicken is sliced white meat chicken topped with thick sweet sauce. The chicken itself does not have any flavor, the sauce is just a thick thick sugary sauce. non of us had more than one bite of the chicken, I tried to put hot sauce on it, still did not make it better. the tempura comes with 2 shrimp, 2 pieces of broccoli, 1 piece of bell pepper, 1 piece of sweet potato, and 1 piece of carrot. The shrimp is good. sweet potato and carrot are not bad either. The batter could have been mixed it better, it just seem sloppy since there is a big flour ball inside of my bell pepper, also the broccolis tasted like flour too. it was unpleasant in the mouth. Overall, I was not impressed. the bento box cost $15 each. maybe it is our entree choice. but the food quality is just not up to par. It could be better.

Sorry but I would not return. The service was super so that's the extra star...but I had a sushi roll which was tasty, except that the cut of the tuna was not a good one. The texture was horrible and made for a horrible roll. At first I thought it was stale seaweed, but realized it was the white tough part that is in the cheaper tuna cuts. I kept having to spit it out...not fun.

visiting for 10 days from Chicago where there quite a few good sushi places, i wanted to have some while in Layton. I liked it a lot. Most important - the food - was good, i'd go back anytime. Had the Alaskan Roll and the Ell roll (2 of my favs). Both were great. Place is decorated nicely with modern Asian (maybe Japanese) art/decor. Good service.

Another Japanese impersonated Restaurant owned by the Koreans. If the sushi chef is Asian, it does not mean they are Japanese, they are just decorations and are misleading customers to believe who they are not. Nate S is right that place was horrible. Tona, although not Japanese owned, the food was Japanese flavor. Osaka sushi is a style of sushi from Kansai region in Japan. Osaka sushi is formed by seasoning fish and pressed in square box. They are serving typical Americanized sushi and the rice sucked. The rice was either mixed too much or was cooked with too much water, and the seasoning was too sweet. The form of their Nigiri is not traditional and the cut of the fish sucked. They served bloodline on my tuna and tail part of yellowtail that had lots of "suji"(tendon). The fusion they claimed is "CONfusion" . Look at the menu and see how many "special sauce" in fact is just eel sauce, spicy mayo, sriracha, or combination of all. CONSUMERS BE AWARE OF THESE FAKE JAPANESE RESTAURANTS!!!!!

Excellent menu and "specialty rolls", every time I eat here it gets better! Very wide selection of sushi as well as other types of Japanese and Korean dishes. Very nice decor, and always crowded, but well worth the drive (just north of Layton Hills Mall) and worth the wait for a table. Wait staff is always excellent, and very helpful with suggestions from the menu. Highly recommended--I'll be going back!

I almost missed a review for these guys!!! Been going here with friends since it opened years ago. Everything is decent, but I am most enthralled with the following dishes: - Lrg Screaming Orgasm (not on menu)Sashimi with sauce. I would drink cups of the sauce - Grand Canyon - It has Sauteed Mushrooms... who does that? - Uni is usually solid here. - Bentos are good

Best Sushi around! I passed this place many times and finally stopped in to try it.....what a great choice. The Avocado bomb is just that, THE BOMB!!! I keep going back just for this but the sushi is amazing as well! A must for anyone who love sushi, you will not be disappointed!!

  • Nate S.

Very Mediocre. Past prime sushi in a strip mall setting. Blech. Do yourself a huge favor, keep driving to Tona on 25th street in Ogden. You might say it's the difference between Krab and Crab. And if you want genuinely great strip mall dining in Layton, go to Kim Long for pho and calamari. Best in Utah.

We frequent here every Tuesday for 1/2 off sushi! They have impeccable customer service! Taylor is the best. She is professional, funny, and sweet. We try a new roll every time and they keep us coming back! Even their water is delicious!

Whenever I'm in Layton on work travel, we eat at Osaka. Sushi is always fresh, flavorful, and presented well. We've tried several different rolls and have loved them all. The restaurant decor is very nice, service is awesome, and prices are about average. We lucked out this last trip and came in on a Tuesday -1/2 off sushi! I will definitely eat here again!

I just moved to San Diego from Washington state and am visiting my sister in Utah so I have to say that I'm kind of a snob when it comes to sushi and Asian food in general. The yakisoba here has some kind of worchestir sauce which takes over the whole dish and wasn't tasty at all. We had the salmon mango roll and another salmon crunch weren't bad but I've had better. When you see deep fried on the menu, you expect a noticeable coating of tempura ... That was not the case. If anything they sprinkled some tempura flakes on it which is not consistent with what I've had at other sushi places that offer deep fried rolls. We also ordered a chicken teriyaki and while the sauce was good, you could tell they cooked the chicken breast separately as it wasn't as flavorful and it was completely dry. My biggest pet peeve is overcooking meat that should be juicy! They really should either marinate this overnight or start using thigh meat rather than breast meat. Two good things to mention are that the girls greeting at the front were friendly and accommodating so really good customer service. We loved the avocado bomb appetizer which had a spicy salmon skin concoction inside which was a delightful surprise. I would go back to maybe just order appetizers but I would pass on the Japanese food offered.

  • Travis B.

I'll admit it, I don't remember everything we ate, but I remember liking all of it. The presentation was spot on, the fish fresh, and the prices good. Two memorable items were the avocado bomb, real crab covered in avocado, and the Spider Roll. We had some flavored saki that I enjoyed (my usual opinion of saki is that of flavored gym socks). Only downer is this is one of the places that offers half off or BOGO multiple times per week. I feel ripped off when I happen to go on an off night.

I don't know why we were in Layton. We went on a drive one Saturday and just ended up here. We wanted food. We love sushi. I Yelped it, and we ended up here. Honestly, this place is pretty freaking good. Their nigiri is awesome. I love their $2 and $3 dollar skewers. The tempura veggies were good. The rolls we tried were awesome. The inside is clean. The service was kind and attentive. The prices were pretty typical. I have no complaints at all. I don't know if I'll be back simply because I'm never in Layton, but if you're around, I definitely recommend this place. It's better than 75 percent of the places I go to in Salt Lake.

    (5)
  • Amy T.

The sushi here is good. It tastes fresh and it's well prepared, but it isn't the best I've ever had. What gives this place 5 stars is the service. Not sure why (maybe the sake before ordering), but I forgot my sesame allergy. Of course my California roll had sesame seeds on it when it arrived. Being polite, since it was my fault, I decided to just pick them off and not say anything. The sushi chef upon seeing me attempt to remove each seed, made me a new roll! And the replacement roll tasted even better than the first.

Did I expect too much from here ? It was great deal they have half-off deal on Tuesday.( though the appetizers we tried were not) First, the appetizers were pretty good. Hamachi Kama(yellow tail collar) and Avocado bomb. I wish if they showed ingredients and how it's made for some appetizers on the menu like for the avocado bomb because we had to keep calling the server to know about ingredients and what its like. For the sushi and rolls, we ordered silver lake, the roll named by five digits of numbers and salmon ikura albacore and yellow tail sushi. Fish quality was so disappointing. The fish for the sushi was so thin and it was not fresh. And I didn't like sushi rice too. The rice tasted like it was not cooked for sushi rice( its hard to explain about the rice but it was overcooked for sushi rice and I didnt like the seasoning too.) The funny thing is we had 2 rolls and 12 pieces of sushi but there was super tiny amount of Wasabi. like one kidney-bean size for that amount of orders. We asked for extra wasabi. She mentioned about they charge for extra wasabi after she put it on the table. I think it was suppose to be informed before she bring it..and I'm sure though if I had one order of sushi, they would give us the same amount of wasabi that we got with the bunch of sushi and roll orders. This is third sushi restaurant I have tried in Utah.. but I would say Osaka is by far the best compared to the other two places that I had pretty bad experiences aha..the atmosphere and servers were nice in Osaka. Sorry, if I'm spoiled sushi lover from California. ( I have tried some sushi in Japan too though this review is not based on Japan's sushi quality at all haha) But to be honest, it was less than average 'fast' food sushi quality in CA. My journey for hunting good sushi restaurant in Utah is still going on!! And I wish if there were, so people here could have better sushi!!!

Outstanding meal!!! All the rolls were perfect. The Hawaiian Poke was very flavorful. The service was great and our waitress was very attentive. The place has been expanded since our last trip here, very nice atmosphere. We didn't have to wait long for our meal and there were a lot of people in here.

I have to admit everytime I go to visit out Salt Lake City factory I visit Osaka Sushi and Lien the server is the best. I'm not sure where any other Sushi restaurants are. She says back again from California. I usually get the rolls...rainbow, spicy crab, spicy tuna... all very flavorful. The roll with jalapeno will knock your socks off. A big Sapporo will take care of that. I was surprise how fresh the fish was, they are landlocked surrounded by Idaho, Nevada and Colorado. The sushi chefs are not really fast but they do prepare some really good rolls. The last time I was there 2 co--workers and me finished off nine rolls plus edamame, Sapporos and the un-filtered sake. All that hard-work can lead a man to some serious Sushi eating.

Three stars at best. Not bad but for the money doesn't hold a candle to a little place just north of here on 25th street in Ogden! Just sayin!

My favorite Sushi bar since I have been home from Japan. I love this place! We always go on our anniversary because this was our first unofficial date place. Tuesdays are packed because a lot of their menu is 2/2 price, but always good food.

In Utah, there are very few places that offer a good selection of true Japanese cuisine all in one restaurant. But I am really happy with Osaka Sushi because they had all our favorites!! Okonomiyaki, Ramen, Udon, Unagidon and a good selection of sushi. I just LOVE that they do the birthday promo for a free Entree or Sushi Roll off! The staff was very friendly and helpful when advising on the menu. The reason why they didn't get the 5 stars is because I always expect a soft boiled egg or nitamago and they didn't have it. Also the pork or tonkatsu was really dry and hard. But I still slurped up the whole bowl!! Overall, I am still really happy with this place and I loved sitting at the Tatami section! It just made our whole "Japanese" experience that much more authentic and fun!!! :)

I love the mexican crunch roll, cancun roll, and silverlake. I have had good service experiences and bad here but the food has always been pretty good. The place is clean though I have yet to use the restroom. Tuesday is half price day and it's always super crowded, but a good deal on sushi.

Service was great!!! I have read a lot of reviews about this place where service was not good, but my experience was fantastic. From arrival to departure it was about 35 minutes. Food was great as well. Started with the Avocado Bomb, which is crab, soft shell crab, and tuna wrapped in avocado. It is excellent. Also had the roller coaster roll and tornado. Both were delicious and I would highly recommend this place.

Wow. This place has expanded on the inside. I remember this place when it was half the size it is now. It is still a nice place with friendly people working there. Prices are still on the high side, but that is off set by the fact that the food is still excellent. The variety of sushi rolls have definitely increased. Don't have time or the stomach capacity to try them all, but the couple I did order were very good. I guess I need to make more of a point to return here more often to try the other rolls. Just wish the prices were a little more in line with some of the other sushi places in the area.

The beef teriyaki was so tender and the rice was just right. The sushi the wife says was great, she had 4 different rolls and each was fresh! Our waitress was fast to take our order but after that she was scarce and far and few, had to ask another waitresses for everything else! Had to edit this the next day because the wife got so sick and it was coming from both ends!

I've driven past this restaurant for years and finally dropped in for dinner. Wow! What have I been missing? I've only had a few items from their menu but it has all been delicious an outstanding. I need to make up for lost time.

I love going to this restaurant. We've been so many times a few of the staff actually recognize us. The staff is always very friendly and keeps a good eye on you. Most servers are very knowledgable with the sake, there was a new person who didn't know everything but, she was still very helpful. I definitely recommend the Ebi mayo as an appetizer, so good. I also enjoyed the snow and silver lake rolls, I've tried so many but, those are some of my favorites. They also have a rice less roll that is absolutely amazing, I would highly recommend this place to anyone.

Wish more places were that friendly and had such a great food. From the moment I stepped in, I was greeted for all employees/chefs with a warm smile. N the food was really really great. Wish I was from here, so I would definitely become a regular.

Came to Osaka on a Thursday night to celebrate my birthday. Been here before but the remodel def steps up the atmosphere!! Ordered mainly off the happy hour menu (5-6) and some entrees. Food was great and tasted fresh! I love that the edamame is served hot. Sushi was really good. Our waitress was friendly. Food came out quick and I couldn't be happier the food and service. Thanks!

Love the sushi here! A+ service! Clean and nice atmosphere! New to the area and already been here twice and always satisfied.

As a number of others have noted (and lamented), there is a dearth of not only sushi restaurants, but good restaurants in general, in this area. Leave the safe confines of Salt Lake City, going either north or south and you begin immediately to travel on perilous and dangerous ground. However, there are some glittering shiny moments beyond those hallowed city borders and this is one of them. I'll be frank with you and tell you that this would be a lower rung player in Salt Lake and it certainly will give Tona no shakes or qualms, but they do a very solid job of execution. I'll come back to this in a minute, but their technique was very solid. Green tea was also excellent and I truly enjoyed all of the many overt and subtle Japanese references. Even though they buried me by the utensil station, I didn't mind especially, as I could survey the entire restaurant from that vantage point and this was a very comfortable place to spend time. Serving staff was also very nice. Where this place stumbles is in taste. There are two half-off sushi places just up the road from them and while Osaka is better, it's not way, way better. They are way, way more expensive, however. Regular readers will know that I may observe it, but tend to care little about expense as long as quality is there. It wasn't on the Picoso or on the Rainbow Roll, which featured an unlisted, very unpleasant and wholly unwanted surprise. This visit, I chose mostly specialty rolls that featured tons of stuff at once, but on the NNY and the TNT, both paid off well. Not great. No place serving cat food spicy tuna is ever going to be great. Taste was ok when it appeared in the rolls, but consistency...blech. I did find the myriad of flavors to blend and mesh nicely both in the TNT and the NNY. The other two items I chose I would not order again. The ginger they gave me was the pink stuff and was very...odd. The menu made a great point of listing real crab in various rolls. I found this to be debatable and in at least one of the rolls, highly dubious. Nothing tasted bad or anything like that and the presentation was immaculate. I will give them that and obviously, overall, I liked the place, but value to dollar was a bit lacking. Perhaps if I choose just the regular rolls if there is a next time, it will come out better. I did want to try their Nigiri, but was a bit too full (and running short of time) by that point. Realistically, this is a 3 for food and with the intangibles, décor, etc., more like a 3.5. Friendly service again saves the day and gives them the kick to 4.

If there every was a sleeper of a sushi joint, this would be it. It's a best kept secret for sushi lovers in Davis county. I currently live in Slc downtown and I still come up here regularly. Tuesday is usually my day of choice. Half off all day and not a bit of quality is sacrificed. Creative rolls, good staff who put you first, quality ingredients, all make for one of my favorite hidden spots.

I've been looking for a good sushi place in Salt Lake City and have been unable to find one. My hubby and I had an errand to run in Woodcross so on the way back we decided to try this place. When we walked in, we asked to be seated at the bar. Great service and we got our money's worth. Food was fresh and tasty and we were full. I will definitely revisit again.

It's pretty good sushi. I personally think the prices are a bit high for the size.... However they tasted wonderful. Minus 2 stars for the amount and the price of food, and for the kinda stinky, dank, dark interior of the restaurant.

I ordered Tuna and Hamachi sashimi on a Tuesday at the sushi bar. My order took 40 minutes to come out... I didn't even order a roll. Just sliced fish.. The Tuna's center was still frozen and the Hamachi stank like week old garbage. I know it's Utah, but damn.... have some pride in your food. Sushi is only as good as the fish, and Osaka's fish is turrible. Some of these reviews are ridiculous... who the hell judges a sushi restaurant based on their Miso soup? Unless you're ordering deep fried rolls smothered in spicy mayo to hide their rotten fish, I'd recommend you pass. If you want quality sushi, pay the extra money and go to Tona in Ogden or drive down to Salt Lake City.

I've been here several times over and always have a good experience. The specialty rolls are delicious and service is prompt.

Osaka offers 50% sushi on Tuesdays which is what reeled me in the other day, haha. The half off menu is limited to only certain items and it's kind of hard to find the description of the rolls that are offered, but that's my only complaint. Each roll I had was beautifully rolled and presented on a large platter - perfect for Snapchat and Instagram pictures! Everything was also really flavorful. My favorite roll was probably the Spanish. If you're ever in the area, go to Osaka to satisfy your sushi needs!

Im really leaving a 3.5. But I figured I would round up becuz sushi was amazing. Im a sushi professional. It was top notch. Superb service Platter item was crap. I ordered a chicken platter. It was 30% chicken, and the remaining was onions and veggies. And was dark meat as well. More fatty meat. You cant go wrong with the sushi. I hope they start giving large protein choices for the plates.

Great sushi variety at an affordable price. We tried 8 different rolls and enjoyed every one of them. Seating is somewhat limited and they didn't take reservations on a Friday night, but the food was very good and I would highly recommend it.

Heard good things about Osaka, reasonable prices, pretty good quality sushi, was excited to try it. Unfortunately the one time I did go there, the service killed the whole experience. Granted, it was busy and we waited for 15 minutes for a table, which is understandable, but once our order was taken, our server was nowhere to be found. Our order - one rainbow roll and one eel roll, hardly anything overly complicated, never came, as we watched patrons who arrived later than we did receive far larger and more complicated orders before ours. When the server finally came around, after nearly an hour, she told us they were working on them now. We asked what the problem was, saying we weren't pleased with our experience thus far, to which she responded, "if you feel the need to leave, then go ahead and leave." That was it. We would have stayed and eaten our meal, but with that comment - no thank you. It's a shame, seems like a good place and I was looking forward to it, but I will not be going back.

As always, when I'm on a business trip I look for a good sushi place. Again, as with LA, I luck out...fabulous place within walking distance of the Holiday Inn Express. I also lucked out into the last 15 minutes of happy hour! I got a killer sashima assortment of around $13. I had a LOT of sushi. The total bill with two LARGE sake's came to $60. Not bad, considering all I got. The fish portions were more than generous. The rolls were just the right mix of rice and "stuff". Ikura was fresh and spot-on. When you think about "sushi in Utah", don't laugh. Ten years ago it would have been a joke. Now? It's great. Oh... and the staff were really wonderful. What's not to like?

Tuesday night - half-price sushi! The place was packed, staffed by at least 15 people, and very busy. I've gone to this place many times in the past, and really love their food. When I get sushi I like to order what I want, and if I'm still hungry I place a second order. I was told that because they were so busy, a second order may take longer than usual, and I was okay with that. Unfortunately, after finishing my first order and letting my server know I wanted more, she brought a menu and I never saw her again. After waiting politely for 20 minutes, another server snatched the menu without asking if I needed to order. Another 20 minutes goes by, and my original waitress comes over with my check. I was shocked that I had to wait so long, only to have it suggested that my meal was over. I told her I wanted to order more food, to which she obliged and quickly remembered that I had asked her about it 40 minutes earlier. And to make up for that wait, what do I get? A bowl of miso soup, and the server telling me if I had flagged her down my order would have been taken faster! For such terrible service I would have expected a discount on my meal, or something more than a bowl of soup that cost them PENNIES to make. I gave them three stars because the food was fabulous and prompt (once ordered), and I would have given them four if the service hadn't been so terrible.

Living in Southern California I have access to some of the freshest seafood in the world and with probably the highest concentration of Sushi restaurants in the country I can honestly say that Osaka is right on par with some of the best. Other yelpers say it's the best in Utah and I think that's very possible. The décor, service and ambiance is a step or two behind where I think they could be. It doesn't add to the experience, but doesn't deter. I happen to have gotten good service. They have quite a few tempura rolls/deep fried roll options, pretty good menu selection if your coming for rolls, I like a combination of nigiri, rolls, poke salad. Poke salad is a bit more Hawaiian than Japanese, but they did it right, maybe a little more sesame oil and I prefer blue fin to ahi. Rock and Roll is good, no rice so you get more of a true taste, squid salad was ok. Salmon was good, nothing special. I like places that play with more than just rolls, anyone can do rolls. It's what's not on the menu, the sashimi, salad, appetizer's that involve fresh fish that really make you stand out. I doubt I'll ever be back in Layton, but if I was I'm coming back here and Crown Burger.

Stayed at the Hilton Garden inn next door. Found osaka on yelp. Based on the good reviews I tried it out. Great sushi options, good selection of creative spicy rolls. I ended up eating here two night in a row to try out all things I missed the first night. They are open till 10 during the week which is later that half of the restaurants in that business park. Good food great service 5 stars

I went to this restaurant several years ago, and was disappointed. The decor was filthy, stained by food, and in poor condition. The sushi was ok then, but not spectacular. That was then. Things have changed. The decor appears to have been revamped, cleaned, and repaired. The quality of the sushi is better, but still not quite on par with my favorite sushi restaurant, but still better than most. I'm always a fan of small businesses that try to improve and change for the better. It's definitely worth the price.

I visit this place every time I travel to Utah...... I love the tornado roll. The owner's are very friendly and the service is great. This is one of the few sushi' places I know of that has a seasonal menu. If you don't like fish, they have the Starburst roll that has peach, mango, strawberry, cucumber, & cream cheese. Yummy

I've been frequenting Osaka for several years now, and each and every time has been a fantastic dinning experience. The fish is always fresh and well prepared. The beer is always cold and top notch. Beware, getting in the door on a Friday or Saturday night can be an ordeal...that's why I usually try to go during the mid-week. AND all this summer is 50% off sushi on Tuesday Nights! You can't go wrong with Osaka. The best sushi in Layton.

Average Sushi. Thick rolls with a lot of rice. Pro: Great flavors and selection. Con: The waitress was talking really loud about her personal life to another waiter and it was a bit unprofessional, and we waited forever for two rolls. We weren't really impressed so we probably wont go back unless its a happy hour deal.

Ordered the eel roll as an app and the spicy ramen. The eel roll was flavorful and well priced, and the ramen was just spicy and smokey enough without being overpowering. Service was very good as well!

This is the second time I've eaten here. Their sushi is very good. My husband is a very picky eater and he really enjoyed their Sunny roll. I've also had the Philadelphia roll here and would recommend it. Our waitress both times was very nice and very helpful in aiding us with choosing which sushi we would like. The environment is very laid back and not at all intimidating. If you're not sure about what sushi you like or are not familiar with sushi this is a great place to come. We had no problems with asking questions and getting recommendations.

Osaka is my favorite sushi place in the area, hands down. The fish always tastes fresh and light. This is a good place to bring the family, with plenty of mild rolls and family-sized dining options. It also caters to other crowds at the same time with pretty good nigiri and a few different sake options. The ambiance is great, with more lanterns than you can imagine. The only drag is the TV, which can be loud and doesn't really match the style. This place can get busy, and there is somewhat limited seating. Especially for Tuesday's half off specials. People didn't used to know about that, but now they definitely do. Be sure to come at least 30 minutes early and expect some sitting during peak hours. The wait is worth it though--I've always been impressed with Osaka.

It took me some time to warm up to Osaka. The first couple times I ate here I wasn't impressed. My wife however really likes this place (and it is much closer to our house than Windy's) so we continued to come infrequently. I've since gotten to really like the place. I think that I'd now rate this place above Midori but definitiely below Windy's. Where Windy's has some really creative flavors Osaka is more straightforward and traditional but the sushi is good. Every Tuesday they do a half price menu that has a lot of great food on it. It's a nice interior though really loud at times, not especially fast (especially on Tuesdays) but good food. Happy to order here regularly.

Sushi was ok. The price was really high for a small 4 piece roll. Also, never go on a Saturday around 4pm. The restaurant was full and they only had two servers working. We waited over 5min to be greeted at our table, and over 20 min for our food. Not impressed. Probably won't be returning based on the price alone.

I love their bento box. It's only 12.95! I usually get the salmon teriyaki and sashimi. Their sashimi size is huge compared to other places. If you go on Tuesdays their sushi is half off. I like the dragon roll. It has a huge piece of eel on it.

This was my first time coming here, and I loved it. We went on a Tuesday night for my fiancé's birthday to take advantage of their 50% off sushi night. We got the spicy tuna roll, yellowtail roll, candy roll and the tempura shrimp roll. They were all good, but I especially loved the candy roll. I have a hard time with fish, but I tried the spicy tuna roll and it was really good, not fishy at all. The food was fresh, and flavorful, and I for sure what to go back soon.

Very fresh sushi, super friendly staff, some small unique tweaks to regular sushi. I"m from SF area, and this sushi is just as fresh, and possibly tastes better, than most of the sushi restaurants around me. I really enjoyed their nigiri sake. Fresh fish, nice portion, and they added small slice of lemon underheath, which gave it a super fresh taste. I'll definitely come back when I'm in town.
