Yes.. five stars again. If you ask for extra crispy french fries, by golly, you get 'em. best patty melt in town. best fast food, great prices, the employees are super stars. Everyone and everything about the Hermitage Cafe is above and beyond superior. I love these people. I love how they treat me. I love how they prepare my food for my fussy ways.. I love the location, the hours, the staff, the food, the griddle, the coffee pots, photos on the wall, is there something I'm missing? And you never know if you're going to happen on filming..... Anyone and everyone films there.... ********** 10 stars!

My favorite place in Nashville. They know me here. The new cook and server were rude, took over an hour to get my food, and when I got my food it was wrong. After a decade of patronage and good tips I expect better. So sad my favorite place could plummet so quickly.

Don't come here for the food, but for the atmosphere. This place is a full out dive, but a nice, friendly local one! There's the Dead and Janis playing, your coffee mug is chipped, and you have to love it. We had omelettes as a group, and our food was a bit cold. We even saw a regular just tell the waitress, "my food is too cold, microwave it" to give you a flavor! Still, I much prefer to go here and spend less than $10/brunch than to go to an overpriced hotel buffet around the corner. The Cafe is very small, so make sure to call before to reserve your place if you have more than 6 in your group.

The ambiance was a small hole in the wall breakfast place-don't expect fancy or modern. The price was a good deal. The service was slow so you want to make sure you don't need to get somewhere fast or that you're super hungry. The employees were pleasant and seemed to like their regulars. They were laid back and very casual; for example, at some point they and some of the patrons broke into song "It's hard out here for a pimp." The omelet was good, the fried potatoes were real-not frozen. I'd pass on the biscuits and gravy and the pancakes were just ok. It's cash only although they have an atm inside.

This has been my favorite place for breakfast since I can remember. For about 6 years I didn't have to order. Definition of a regular right there. The staff is great and the good is perfect for what it is.

Driving back from getting tags for my car, I spied the Hermitage Cafe out of my left eye. What better way to celebrate being an official Nashvillian than having breakfast at this local institution. I was happy to see it was not a tourist trap, but a solid breakfast joint with a seat at the counter waiting for me. I had the special, an omelette featuring Boars Head ham. Made me laugh to think of a Brooklyn, NYC brand next to a big fat plate of biscuits covered with Sausage Gravy, but this is Nashville, and it seems there's always a little new with the old. My omelette came out long, fat and piping hot. The coffee continued to flow until I begged them to stop. I couldn't have asked for better service. My only regret is that it wasn't 2am and I was coming from a great concert, but there is the upcoming Jack White concert to fix that. I believe in Nashville!

Don't bother wasting your time at this filthy restaurant. Just walking in our shoes stuck to the floor because it was greasy and sticky. The waitress was extremely rude, and clearly didn't want to be at work that day. We tried to get a table and she rolled her eyes and said they were too busy, and when we tried to order food to go, she said she was too busy to do that. I have never been treated so poorly.

My life can be defined by a quest to find the best breakfast diners in every town - the type of place you go and sit at the counter, you meet the locals, and NOTHING has "aioli" on it (screw that trend!). I think it an be officially declared: Hermitage Cafe is the best of such diners in Nashville. I come here once every week or two, and have consistently been served a quick, hot breakfast by some of the most down-to-earth people in town. The folks working here make every effort to make sure you leave satisfied. This is it, people! The dressed-down, classic American diner that might as well be in our Constitution! Nothing fancy - just the classics. Meats, eggs, french toast/pancakes, and some of the best dang biscuits n' gravy in town! I've settled on my "usual," the Denver omelette with cheese, a side of bacon (or sausage, if I'm feeling like breaking my routine... which is never, so disregard the sausage comment), rye toast, and potatoes. And hot dang, it ain't going to hurt your wallet! Everything's cheap. And awesome. I really have to stress the awesome factor. See you again soon, Hermitage Cafe.

This place is awesome. Great vibe. Got the western omelette with biscuits and gravy. Very good Coffee was traditional diner style and strong and amazing. Cash only!! Definitely make this a regular stop when come back.

I've been here a few times. The food is good, the people who work here are great to talk to. I like how they are real, you won't find people like them anywhere else. They fucked up my order though but were sincere and apologetic. Very good and attentive. The place has soul. Cash only. They have an ATM inside.

Not a fan. Ate with 5 family members and nobody said anything good about their breakfast and at least one was complaining. Place was not clean enough for me. Service was so-so. CASH ONLY...they do have an ATM inside.

A really good greasy spoon! The service was great and friendly. Not real busy at 1am. The coffee was delicious and my cup kept full. And the food comforting! I shall return!! And don't forget...cash only.

Greatly respect the unbelievable hustle of the staff at 4am when the restaurant was packed and everyone was drunk and rowdy. Food was pretty good. Biscuits were some of the better I've ever had. I'd come here again for the dirty Nashville diner dive experience.

No matter what/how they serve, they get 5 stars for opening all night. And its not that they serve bad good, its actually much better than I expected. I started my cafe journey with biscuits and gravy which was delectable, and then came the patty melt with 8 pounds of fries. The patty melt is served on grilled rye and was actually very good for diner food. I also ordered thier special "From Chicago" corned Beef Hash which was packed with flavor but slightly salty for MY tastebuds. And dessert was French toast. Standard frenchtoast with powdered brown sugar n bit of butter with syrup to pour all over it n get fat like I did tonight lol. What can u say about the crowd? This was my first trip here, and in the 50 minutes I stayed, I came across a drunk couple from Oklahoma, a VERY pretty prostitute and her "client", a gay couple who had thier tongues down each others throats for almost a half hour, and a hipster couple. And some construction workers were walking in as I was walking out. So very diverse, colorful and entertaining, to say the least. But I had a good meal and a great time. Another notch in my Nasty Food Belt!

This place is a cute family owned breakfast cafe. Fast and fresh cooked food on point. Our waitress was nice and friendly and kept the coffee coming! There's a juke box on the wall by the entrance!

Friendly, hometown dive...my kind of place! Old fashioned diner where the grill and cook are fast at work right behind the counter. Breakfast is served late (till 1:30 PM). Bring a bit appetite and cash (credit cards not accepted).

I can tolerate the funky feel of this place. I can tolerate no butter with toast. But no soap or paper towels in the bathroom. Nope

The breakfast is great. I had #1 special with fried bologna and got full fast enough. Fried bologna was delicious! Country cooking, southern hospitality. You better not come with an attitude...you will get one back. Oh, btw...don't even think about walking in with your pants saggin'...it isn't allowed.

Mannnnnn I really have found a deep place in my heart for hermitage cafe... The grilled cheese with egg and bacon and potatoes with gravy are my go to items... Even though I can make the sandwich at home it tastes 10 x's better when the man from hermitage cafe makes it.... I love him he knows just what I want.... And makes my visit more memorable each time....

Terrific old school diner. Sherry (waitress) made this Yankee outsider feel right at home. Satisfying basic eggs'n'bacon. Lots of coffee refills. My kind of place when I'm solo.

Stopped here when I arrived in Nashville way too early for a meeting and decided to have some breakfast. Oh lord it was amazing. As in, it might just be the best breakfast I've ever had. Now I'm definitely a fan of divey greasy-spoon diner joints, and I know that the true test of such a place is how delicious their food is when you're completely *sober*. Which I was, and it was still amazing. Greasy & filling is easy to find with diners like this. Greasy, filling, and legitimately delicious? Now that's a bit more rare. The omelet I had was incredible. The cheese was perfectly melty and gooey, the onions were nice and crispy. It was fantastic! I have no idea what sort of magic the cook worked to make it so delicious, but I've had plenty of omelets in my life and this is the first one I've ever taken the time to rave about. And the home fries.. were basically a religious experience. I thought I'd had home fries plenty of times in my life. Apparently I've been merely eating "fried potatoes" this entire time. You could tell me that this diner makes its home fries by using oil blessed by the pope and potatoes grown on top of Mt. Olympus, and I'd probably think that's a perfectly reasonable explanation given how delicious they are. The service was fast and friendly, and the staff was usually engaged in lively conversations with regulars. If I lived within walking distance to this place, I'd end up being 600lbs with arteries like crisco-stuffed twizzlers, and I'd still be happily riding my fat-people-scooter there daily. It's that good.

This spot is a Godsend. Anytime, day or night, if you get a hankering for breakfast or a killer burger the Hermitage Cafe is your spot. The food is top notch diner grub. It's all cooked in front of you by a guy who talks like he is from New Orleans. My bacon burger had 6, I repeat, 6 slices of bacon and was cooked to perfections. Suck it, Baconater. You can also tell that there are a steady stream of regulars in there. One guy rolled in with a slice of pizza and the waitress yelled at "Jimmy" for bringing it in but then served him his coffee just like he likes it. Great spot.

  • Matt N.

This place is absolutely disgusting. I don't know if they treated us so poorly because they knew we were out-of-towners or what, but I was shocked. At one point an owner told the chef--while I was in ear shot--that my sausage "was totally burnt but go ahead and serve it anyways." Unbelievable. If you're just passing through Nashville you may want to consider passing on this place.

New owners, super cute old time diner ambiance and great prices for great southern style breakfast. We were very happy to come upon this place.

Just your typical greasy spoon spot with mediocre service but GREAT food. The home fries were some of the best I've had. We waited about 30 minutes for our food (I'd recommend sitting at the bar if you want fast service) because there was only one waitress and it was busy, but in the end it was worth it and I will definitely return. Don't expect anything fancy or clean, just expect good food and great prices.

Went here because we were hungry and it was there...and I'm so grateful. This place is great, exactly what you want when you're hungry for a no frills breakfast, and no frills service. Not that the service was poor, it was perfect..speedy, to the point and no bothersome conversation. Best biscuit I've ever had, anywhere. And I've had biscuits before so I do have something to compare them too! I had one southern fried chicken biscuit, next time the corned beef hash. We went about 9 AM, sober...couldn't imagine how great this place would taste around 230 AM, not sober. Every city needs a perfect tiny divey place like this, the perfect greasy spoon. IMHO. Enjoy!

Should have believed the ratings that warned about dirty dining, uninterested service and bland food. Do not waste your time and money here. Floor, tables, chairs, etc were dilapidated, over medium eggs were crispy, home fries flavorless, toast cold, coffee mugs w multiple chips. I have never written a review on Yelp but felt the need to help someone avoid our mistake.

  • Julie S.

OK...totally one of my all-time favorite places in Nashville...you see the most eclectic people. It's so nostalgic, that I think it rivals The Palms for celebrity memorabilia...but in a totally retro diner sort of way. The food is to DIE FOR! Really yummy! Everything from the chili to the burgers to the fab cakes. And the people who work there are so sweet and helpful and wonderful! If I were a tourist, wanting a real sense of the Music City side of Nashville, this would be my #1 top choice of places to go. And they are open ridiculously late for those wanting to grab dinner after the bar scene downtown.

This place is great. The food is delicious and at a very reasonable price. The lady who owned it died and her daughter is taking over. They need all the support they can get so they don't have to shut down. Let's all help them out and support this amazing little cafe!

Miserable experience. Waitress(laurie or laura)was rude. Brought us 2 teas and asked us to pay our tab from two weeks ago. We weren't even in TN two weeks ago and have never been to this place. She said she could prove it and we could not order until we paid. She said if we paid she would return my buddy's driver license. I told her impossible since she did not have it. She got mad at me for calling her out. She was adamant about proving us wrong. We offered to pay tab and even gave her $40 just to put this behind us. After a few minutes she came back to the table told us she could not find DL and to keep the $40 and that she was not serving us. I asked if we could tip her for the teas and with the worst attitude ever she said you tip me and pay for them. I gave her $20 and told her to keep the change. I hope that made her smile or brought some happiness to her night.

I LOVE this place. Have been many, many times and have never had a bad meal. If you're looking for a modern, upscale diner than this place isn't for you. It's a greasy spoon, it's not perfect, but it's delicious. And that's all that matters.

    (5)
  • Stephen M.

I need to start off by saying I'm a long time patron of this little gem. Pat and the staff are wonderful, and sometimes even friendly. You must understand when visiting the cafe, this is not health food, or gourmet. No one needs any snark about how greasy the food is, we get that (it's a greasy spoon). I have been to diners all over this fine country, and this one rivals the best when it comes to breakfast and atmosphere.

You'll love it or hate it - It all depends how fancy you are. I, for one, love this place. It's nasty, it's terrible for you, it's cheap, and it's delicious. I love a good greasy spoon, and this is about as good and greasy as they come. It's like Waffle House's cool old uncle who fought in the war and has a street named after him in his hometown. To clarify, when I say "nasty", I certainly don't mean there are rats running around and snot flying on the food. They currently have a 98 (!) on their health score! I just mean it is a tad more Brad Paisley than Brad Pitt. Catch my drift? You probably won't be disappointed. And if you are, well, too bad.

So country! In all aspects. I went here with a couple of new friends after a long night of drinking a couple weekends ago! And man, all i needed was grease and a nap. Mission accomplished. I got the western omelet and po' boy. (Don't judge) They don't serve egg whites (not that i asked) or anything healthy or fat free. But apparently all the big nashville stars come in here shit faced to get some late night eats. Everyone was really nice and chivalrous, which a girl needs every once in a while, and i will definitely be going there again. Good laughs, food and satisfaction! PS. If you're a lady not only do you get served first (water, food) but they pull your chair out!

Awful experience, restaurant was filthy. The only waitress working was yelling at her kids the whole time. Food took forever and was pretty bad. Staff was eating the whole time we were there. Avoid this restaurant!

Stopped by here last Saturday around 3am as it was the closest 24-restaurant Yelp found for me. It's an old school diner and the waitress was helpful and straight-shootin'. I ordered scrambled eggs, bacon, home fries, and OJ. It arrived fast, hot, and delicious. Hit the spot. If you're partying on Broadway Street after last call, make sure you hit this place up. It''ll do you right.

the patty melt and the french toast are both fantastic. Great late night, early am grub. I hear someone working here has been there for like 60 years. Dont know if much truth to that but awesome if so. Place seems kinda run down like 50's diner feel. bathroom is super small and had no soap, kinda makes you wonder. Overall a must stop in at for some post drinking or pre work grub. 4 Stars. Will be back.

Came here for breakfast after a night of drinking with my friends following a wedding. Walked in and it seemed everyone knew each other by first name. The customers and workers seemed to all be on a first name basis which was cool. It has that crappy diner feel which I love. If dirty spoons and plates gross you out, or you can't take rude service, just stop reading and go somewhere else. Seemed to be located on the verge of downtown Nashville and the ghetto. Everything is old and worn out and the service has a southern hospitality feel with a little attitude served on the side. Being inside this restaurant is entertaining. Mainly the locals that come here and how they interact with the workers. At one point I heard some yelling coming from behind the sink. One of the workers was washing the dishes and stopped ...looked up and yelled at a customer saying "What? Is me washing the dishes bothering you? Too loud? Well I'll tell you what...why don't you take those napkins on your table...ball em up..and stick em in your ears so you don't have to hear it, because I don't give a damn, I've got a job to do." The waitress also came by our table with more coffee, we all told her we didn't want anymore. She proceeded to fill up our cups anyway and said, "well I'm filling them up anyway because I'm not coming back with this coffee pot." The food itself was pretty good. I got the scrambled eggs, sausage, and biscuits and gravy. Holy shit there was so much gravy I couldn't see the biscuits underneath. My girlfriend who was with me is from California, not used to southern diners at all. When we got our food there was a big old hair on her plate in her eggs. She took one look at it.. went to the bathroom, threw up, and then came back and ate all her food. Haha so many good memories from just one visit to the place. I would def recommend going if you havn't been. You have been warned tho! And one last thing, they only take cash. They do have an ATM inside, but it charges $3.00 to use it so I recommend coming with cash. I would have given this place 5 stars if I didn't have to waste money pulling cash out of that ATM.

As being the person to tell our biggest fan she could not park in the lot on the 4th, we had reason. 1. She tried to park up at the door and the owner told her it was for her employees that had to work that night. She got angry and cAlled the elderly lady a b*tch. So she proceeded to the back of the lot and tore the rope down. My husbAnd and I were in a back of an pick up truck loaded with kids from 3-13. So she tore the rope down and waved the car in. That is when I told her that she couldn't park there. Not to mention that she was drunk, rude and disrespectful, it is private property! 2. If she was polite and asked we would have let her park there. But instead she used her husbands misfortune to try and score a parking spot. Threaten to plaster us on the internet as unsupportive to the vets. Which is very funny! If she opened her eyes and shut her mouth for 2 secs. She would have realized she was surrounded by veteran bikers. 3. Point blank, I do not want my kids and their friends near some strange drunk lady with a bad attitude. We had very young kids there. It is very sad that a business was blasted because of a parking spot. For 25 years the owner has closed the restaurant so the employees and the employees family could come and watch the fireworks from the diner. Too bad a drunk, rude and classless woman tried to put a damper on it. I suggest she grows up a bit and get a life!

Hello once more yelp! community. Today for Mother's Day my family went to the Hermitage Café and though my old man had been before, it was a first time for me and mother. When we went inside it was sparsely decorated but had photos of famous country singers lining the walls and the café had a 60s feel to it though upon furthur research found the place to be about 30 years old. Now, I'm sure you want to learn about the food and not the interior design or history, eh? Well I ordered the french toast (my favourite breakfast) and it took about 10 - 15 mins for it to arrive so the service was speedy enough. And the food was hot, fresh, and pretty good. The drinks are cold, too. Now I always try to make a point of giving the employees a review as well. Our server was Sherry and though she seemed friendly enough I couldn't see a trace of a smile on her face and smiling employees are always a selling point with me. So there's the four star explanation. After everything is said and done I will most certainly go again if I find myself in the area and in need of cheap, fast, and delicious food. Maybe next time it'll be for lunch. As always, thanks for reading and happy yelp!ing. = )

This place was a perfect stop after a concert that let out about 12:30. It is definitely a dive, but the food was exactly what we were looking for. Vege Omelet, toast, hash browns, french toast, bacon, and coffee. All served quick and hot. The crowd at night is pretty good for people watching.

If you love packaged gravy mix and salmonella, Hermitage Cafe is for you.I wondered why their prices were so cheap, then I ate there and it made sense. My gf and I went into HC today. We had heard good things about this place and were ready for a typical southern diner. I ordered the gravy and biscuit special, she ordered the chicken biscuit. I ordered sweet tea thinking that it would be homemade as this is a diner in the South. Boy was I wrong. Nestea mix is not sweet tea. When our orders arrived, it was obvious that the gravy was from a package and had been sitting in a pot all day. When the chicken biscuit arrived, it was a chicken sandwich. Ok ok. Simple mistake. Asked for the biscuit, then watched as the manager picked up the chicken with his bare hand and put it on the biscuit from the bun. I let that slide. Took a bite out of the chicken biscuit after my gf did and noticed a weird texture. Then looked down and saw the chicken was raw. Not just undercooked, but RAW. Heard the cook making retching noises when the order was returned to the kitchen. Cook made another. At this point, I am fighting back vomit. We went to pay the bill and were surprised to see the chicken biscuit was still on the bill. Throughout the entirety of the meal, we could hear staff swearing loudly while cooking the food. Hermitage Cafe makes the Waffle House look like 5 star dining.

I've lived in Nashville my entire life and have never set foot in this place. I have always heard great things about it. I finally decided to go in and I'm glad I did. It was 11pm and it was raining. At first I opened the door and saw that it was cash only, but they had an ATM. I said well no thanks and I turned around and walked away. I stopped myself because I've still always wanted to try it. The place is pretty dirty looking, but that is ok. All of the chairs and tables look like they are about to fall apart, and that didn't bother me at all. I actually liked that about this place. I sat at the counter and was greeted promptly. I told the waitress that it was my first time and I wasn't sure what to get. I asked her what her favorite thing was and I ordered it. The cook sunny/sonny (however you spell it, sorry) cooked it to perfection. As he was cooking he was talking to me and joking around. I could have talked to him for hours. As he was plating the food he saw a little bit of gravy on the side of the plate and he took the time to actually clean it before serving it. As I was eating, not only did the server ask how my food was, but so did sunny/sonny. He genuinely cared about how much I was enjoying my food. Now let me tell you... that is the best biscuit and gravy i've ever had. The eggs were great, the bacon was EXACTLY how I love it. Then the owner, Sherry popped out and asked me how everything was. I let her know that I was loving it. Sherry filled my water and even let me have a small cup of their soup. The broccoli and cheddar soup (which was fantastic). As I was leaving they all thanked me and said they hoped they saw me soon. You know what... they will. I LOVE this place, and I will be back.

If I could give no stars I would since we never received service from anyone. So with that said don't go here if you are actually hungry and expect at least someone to ask you if you want coffee. When a server is playing with a baby for 20 minutes and never approaches you while you wait is unacceptable. Will never return.

The ultimate greasy spoon diner in Nashville. Open 24 hours, this is the perfect spot to sate your drunk munchies with some mega-bad-for-your breakfast foods and sandwiches. The food actually tastes awesome, and far surpasses similar places like Waffle House. I don't know if the food is as good when you're sober, but maybe one day I'll find out.

Visiting Nashville with some friends and we were hungry after a night of drinking. It seemed to be one of the only places still open around 3 AM to eat at. It took forever for us to just get waters. The food was alright and we're pretty easy to please, especially at that time of night, but the restaurant was pretty disgusting. The server gave us our silverware and was holding them at the wrong end (not the handles) - a big no no in the server world and gross! Had to use the restroom and there is only one bathroom for everyone. There was puke all over the toilet, no soap in the dispenser, and no paper towels, either. Made us wonder if there was a separate employee restroom.. I personally had to use the restroom several times the next morning after eating there. Just thinking about the dirtiness of the restaurant makes me cringe. Taco Bell would've been a better choice..

The Hermitage was recommended to us by super nice guys from Bobby's Idle Hour who drew us directions on a napkin. This is the perfect after hours, greasiness layer you need for your stomach after drinking. Not only is the food great but the waitress, cook and fellow customers were nice and welcoming.

Visited Nashville in April 2014 and was shocked that the taxi driver could only name two late-night cafes. Was told that this cafe was the better of the two. Service was okay, about what you'd expect from a diner. However, the food was horribly overcooked. My hash browns and sausage were burnt crisp and were almost inedible.

My boyfriend says it's like a Waffle House. Cheap, greasy and late night food. I'm not a biscuit and gravy kind of girl but it was actually really good. The orange juice - I could do with out. It tasted like Tampico - you know the water from concentrate juice. I would definitely come back just for the biscuit and gravy.

I love the idea of what a diner was to be in it's earlier creation!!! This diner is just that. The food was great. The service was wonderful and the history of the diner is great also. For two meals, samples, and drinks I paid less than 15 without the TIP!!!! We left full and couldnt wait to get back. This is my new favorite dive! The hours are awesome 10PM- 1:30 PM which provides for those late night early cravings!!

Are you F'in kidding me?! Landmark of an institution or greasy goodness! How can you go wrong after honky tonkin all night on lower Broad.? I've done my share of playing many a show down there and THIS is where everyone ends up and for good reason. They are on it! Well for what your taste buds are screaming for at 3am. There's a satisfaction and guilt that co-exists when dining here. Sure, you know about all the things that are bad for you,but dammit,it just tastes so f'in good! And really, that's all that matters. Breakfast served up in such a way that the bathrooms behind the grills don't even matter. If they do? Well, you're in the wrong place.

The Hermitage Cafe is the perfect late night breakfast spot. They have all of the delicious artery clogging food you expect at a southern diner. I usually stick with breakfast food, but they have sandwiches and burgers as well. On my last trip I got the biscuits and gravy, eggs, home fries and coffee. The biscuits and gravy were delicious and sinful the eggs were cooked perfectly as were the home fries and the coffee was strong. Its cheap delicious food served by the sweetest waitresses in the world.

You know what you're getting when you go there. The Hermitage doesn't pretend to be anything at all...it is what it is. A Late Eats Greasy Spoon, heavy on the grease. The fried potatoes are so good...nice and crispy...yum! Good breakfast, colorful clientele and pretty darn good for people watching.

I love greasey spoon diners! The Hemitage Cafe was everything I was hoping for. We were greeted cheerfully as soon as we stepped in the door. Our waitress was UH-mazingly polite, friendly and efficient. With 80% of the seats filled, she still filled our drinks several times and took time to make chit chat with us. I could over hear her talking to other patrons ,whom I assumed were regulars because she knew their orders without them speaking. My son has severe Autism, so he can get a little fidgety. He spent the time before the food arrived messing around with the candy machine. None of the patrons seemed to notice or care. But our waitress brought over some toys she had stashed for her own son, and offered to let him play with them while we were there! Soooo nice of her!!! The food was excellent country cookin'. I had the special: 2 eggs,2 sausage patties, home fries, and biscuits with gravy for $5.75. She brought the bicuits and gravy out before the actual meal...appetizer style. Those biscuits are a great flakey/soft texture and they were SMOTHERED in country gravy. The gravy was tasty, but I would have preferred more sausagey chunks in there. But, then again, I'm kinda obsessed with gravy..... We WILL be going back soon. If I end up living in Nashville longer than the projected year, I will haunt this place until I'm a dried-up blue-haired ol' bitty. Regarding parking: Make sure you park in the side or front lot. We tried parking behind, and a bunch of yokels started hollerin' at us to move on account that area (which isn't marked with a sign) was only for the nearby bar. That's not the fault of the Hermitage, so that didn't effect my rating.

So.. this place has strange hours. 10PM - 1:30PM. Welcome to the Twilight Zone. Aside from the food being pretty cheap, our group witnessed some of the most disgusting food preparation techniques we'd ever come across. The short order cook was literally buttering bread with his hands (like... fingerprints in the butter), sometimes immediately after handling raw meat. More often than not he was using his hands to manage the stuff cooking on the grill. It was gross to the max. Don't think I'll be back here anytime soon.

Great to add to that "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives" List! Now this was the cure for the bushwacker drinks we had the night before at Brewhouse. I got the breakfast special that was eggs, biscuits and gravy, bacon, and country potatoes. Now this was what the doctor ordered! Perfect combination of grease, love, and coffee! the patrons were what you would expect out of any movie depicting Nashville on a Sunday Morning. One of the best stops on our tour of frozen Nashville. We left here to go out to Lynchburg and check out Jack Daniels but, the nice cook said hey! "Y'all should ditch that and head to the Bourbon Trail instead, it has Jim Bean, Maker's Mark, and a few other distilleries." Well enough said....Bourbon Trail it is! Please continue to the Maker' Mark Review to see the results of this!

We came right off the interstate and I located this gem with my iPhone Yelp app on our way back from Bonnaroo. Classic diner. Cash only, really casual atmosphere with friendly staff and greasy diner food. Mmm-mmm. The special was biscuits and gravy, home fries, two eggs and sausage for about $5. You can't beat (or finish all of) that!

Greasy Goodness. The food and atmosphere at the Hermitage Cafe are best described by those two words. Greasy like the food and people. Goodness like.. duh.. because it is delicious. Favorite thing to order: "The Melt" with french fries

Took a road trip from MD to Nashville and this was our first stop on early morning arrival. Best entertainment just watching and talking to the locals and the staff- super nice and hilarious. Got great recommendations of other places to eat in the area.

Okay...so... I went here once and I have been meaning to go back ever since! I have a weakness for greasy spoon breakfast diners. I may also LOVE the movie The Spitfire Grill (and have dreamed of owning something similar). There is something so nostalgic and romantic about these places. I would not call the Hermitage Cafe "romantic", but it was an awesome experience nonetheless! Seeing as this is one of the only places in Nashville like this, I am working with what I have. I took a friend with me to experience this place with me for my first time. I was not drunk (I feel like I have to state that given other reviews) and we went at a relatively normal breakfast time of about 9:30am on a Saturday. We sat at the bar and we received great (albeit frank, honest and no-nonsense) service. The food was good (I mean, it's grease disguised as eggs, biscuits, gravy and pancakes, right) and the ambiance was perfect. Loud, slightly off-color and just what I was hoping to get! After all of that we went next door to Crema for a great cup of soy chai. All in all a wonderful experience which I hope to recreate again very soon.

I suppose if you live in Nashville and you attend bars, you should experience the Hermtiage Cafe. One of Nashville's only 24 hr anythings, the Hermitage serves up greasy spoon diner stuff all day and all night long. Burgers, chicken fried whatever, eggs, biscuits and gravy. Heavy, and as stated by all other reviews - best when you've had a ton to drink. Just a word to the wise: be careful here. It in fact is right off of Broadway, where all the honky tonks are, so at 3 in the morning there could be some substance infused craziness in here. Drink, and eat, responsibly.

  • H. W.

This is my version of Nashville. The waitresses are outgoing, brash, and charming. The food is greasy, unsophisticated, and delicious. The diners are endlessly entertaining. The health department rating is questionable. And the biscuits and gravy will make your heart happy. There's really no other way to describe it. You must try this place.

    (5)
  • Adam C.

Hard to explain, picture waffle house meets denny's. The main thing they have going for them is not much else is open after the bars close. You can get a decent burger, omelet, bacon....etc but don't expect much. Staff was friendly which is a plus but I would imagine a college town could have a better 24 hour place to eat. Oh and don't try to walk from the bars unless you know where you are going, we got lost, turned around, then lost, then almost gave up until we found a cab to help us out. A place to get a hot meal at any hour, but if you had other options you would probably try them

Great little greasy spoon! Breakfast was fantastic. Don't dare go if you want egg whites and turkey bacon. This place is far from that! Thankfully! Service was outstanding. We thoroughly enjoyed the food and the people!

I went there stone sober. I remembered it late one night and decided to go. This was a neat place, the kind of place you'd take your grandson just to share the moment. The kind of place you stop by after your wife gave birth to your first child. The kind of place you run to when your Dad dies and you need those hours to yourself. Let me say this, also: best home fries ever! I inhaled everything, partly because I was hungry, and partly because everything made by people who care about how they make it. The argument can be made that how can you mess up eggs, biscuits, chicken-fried steak, and potatoes, but restaurants do just that every day. Waitress Laura made me feel right at home, chatted with me, and made the meals of everyone who worked there just a little bit better. My iced tea did not stay empty long (which is more than I can say for a lot of places), and service was prompt. That being said, this is still a greasy spoon. Selection is what you'd expect it to be, and nothing healthy has ever found it's way in the place. The odd hours (not 24hrs) make it tough to catch if you're not a morning or late-night person, and the cash-only system is always awkward. Still, for what it does, it's a good place to get full (again, not always an easy thing to find) for very little dime.

  • Greg S.

Allright I'm gonna get straight to the point on this place. "It's a I'm drunk and hungry spot" While waiting on my food my friend said "it feels like we were in that movie "Natural Born Killers" . I looked around and realized it did even though i could see the batman building from my seat. I see an older man come in with a cowboy hat and a shirt that reads "It's my birthday bitch!" . All I hear is "Damnet Boooooy!" "Theres old Chucky" "Chucky Cheese how ya been?" It was very entertaining all of the intoxication around. As any waffle house, huddle house, steak and shake, is in the late night. Onto the my rating , well lit. Menu is above the grill. I got the Southern country fried chicken sandwich with mayo/pickles $4.00 and some hashbrowns. options for sides fries hashbrowns, cole slaw. They have a decent selection of food. Service was great. Their shirts were cool they said "The Hermitage Cafe" "We have the best hash in town". I'm not gonna say its the best food ever. It's a place to go when you don't want to eat at waffle house. But its the same thing. haha

Good food, Good price, great when you're drunk and it's amazing.Doesn't accept credit cards, but there's an ATM in there. Better than waffle house, give it a go!

it is with compromised sobriety, greasy fingers and a satiated gut that i muse on the hermitage cafe. i'll be honest with you, i've gone here WAY more times than i want to disclose over the past month, as i now live shamefully close to pat's hermitage cafe. i've gotten food here drunk and sober, and i stick with ol' trusty: a cheeseburger with fries (per my admission in my review of burger up) the first time i came here i was sober and figured i wouldn't be impressed. i mean... come the fuck on... sure it's pretty much across the street from the newest residential project in my fair city (rolling hill mill). sure, you could say it's in sobro. but in all actuality, one could leave the hermitage cafe and be at the projects on murfreesboro road right where it turns into lafayette in a matter of ten minutes or so. the mix of people will never be boring. every time i've gone there's been a police officer and some punk rock kids. i've seen tourists, people in construction gear, people in construction gear, people in so condition to be seen in public and people visibly uncomfortable to be amongst people that aren't like them. when i got my first burger, i looked at it and didn't think it was anything special. the patties looked like any patty you could get in the grocery store, perfectly flat, perfectly round, and perfectly formed; it immediately made me think "sysco". thankfully i was very, very wrong. i can't quite place my finger on why i liked that burger so much, but it's been consistently goooood every time i've gone and under varying circumstances. also, the amount of fries i've gotten has never been consistent, lol. sometimes i can't finish them, and sometimes i'm tempted to call them back and ask "what the fuck is going on here???", but it's ok. somehow, it kind of adds to the experience. aside from the inverted hours (10pm to 1.30pm, yes... pm to pm. what type of shit is that??), there is nothing that really... stands out about this place, though that sounds MUCH harsher than it really is. you do get the impression, however, that the hermitage cafe seems to be one of those places where you can just feel the ghosts of business and record deals agreed to on a handshake and basket of fries. the consistent deliciousness, inconsistent portioning, genuine service, and weirdo crowd make this place very charming to me and earns each of this quintet of stars. eric b

Wonderful, nice staff. Great (diner) breakfast, and very inexpensive. Cool location over-looking the nice Nashville skyline. We had fun talking to the locals. The joints just a cool, quaint little spot. Stopped in on our way to Memphis, and now we'll be stopping back in on our way back to Baltimore.

Hmm. Well, no hash browns, just home fries. I didn't see biscuits and gravy offered on the menu, so went with the western omelet. It was good: the onions were cooked to sweet caramelization, and the cheese was perfectly melted. So the food is solid, but not really memorable. And zero comfort in ambiance. Interesting times being open for business - that's the best part.

Hermitage Cafe is crazy real. I love this place. Anytime I am in Nashvegas I must stop by for the legendary biscuits and gravy which are out of this world. The vibe is seriously cool and the service is great as well. My favorite part about Hermitage Cafe is that they are open into all hours of the night. This is a great place to go after a late night of partying downtown. And an even better hang over cure early on a Sunday morning. This place is out of control! FYI, don't forget to try the patty melt.

Wow. You know it's been a good night of revelry if you land here before you head home to sleep it off. The Hermitage cafe is a diner complete with jukebox, excellently greasy and reasonably priced food (breakfast items, burgers, grilled cheese), and a waitress who goes by 'mama' who will always make sure your coffee is full. Their fries are delicious, as are the biscuits and white gravy. Yum. There are no individual menus, just photos and lists of the offerings posted behind the bar. Also a great spot for people watching...there's really no telling who's going to pop in. The only way this place could be better is if If only they served milkshakes.

  • Erin D.

I'll be honest, my review may be a tad skewed, seeing as I've only ever been here drunk and somewhere around 4 in the morning. It's the absolute perfect last stop at the end of a night in Lower Broadway or anywhere else downtown. Yes, it's run down and the food probably isn't the highest quality but you don't care. The staff and crowd don't care that you're giggling obnoxiously, can't sit in your chair or have fallen asleep on the table. The cheeseburgers are very cheap and very yummy (again, at least when your drunk). Parking is kinda crazy but somehow my DD always figure something out. I can't remember if they only take cash or if I just always pay cash here, but it wouldn't hurt to have some on ya just in case.

I suspect this is what Waffle House would be like if it weren't a chain. It's open 24 hours, it's a great place to go and eat what Taco Bell calls the fourth meal, and it's cheap and full of crazy drunk people and waitresses with saucy attitudes (in a good way). I don't know how long it's been there, but long enough to have yellowing pictures and large sinking in grease stains on the wall. Don't go here looking for anything posh. It's down home late night stomach lining cooking at its best.

  • Russ G.

Went here after a night of drinking as my friend local to the city said it was a must do. Cool. I don't remember a whole lot about the place, but the highlights were interesting, for example there is no menu. None. There's a big board on the wall with the majority of their offerings, then smaller ones with specials, plates, etc., so you have to be sober enough to read at a distance if you plan to eat. That was hard. Next up, the bathroom. Good Lord this was a catastrophe. It's behind the counter, past the kitchen, in a room, and off into another small room, and I recall it being just large enough to stand in without any room to move your arms. It's the employee's bathroom too, so it's well used. Ack. But the allure of this place is to roll through late night when you're done drinking and need a grease fix to begin soaking up the booze, and it does it very well. I had a burger and fries and devoured them within seconds, settling my stomach and curing my hunger for something other than a beer. For that, it's just right.

Ha, this place is awesome. Went here twice (late-night) while in Nashville with my buddies. Let's be honest, the food's not going to blow you away. But, if you're here, odds are you're hammered and you could care less. It's close to downtown and not much else is open once the bars close. Order the hot dog. It's interesting. I'll never forget this place.

The Hermitage Cafe is a dirty and greasy spoon diner! Based on all of the reviews, I was expecting much better. The potatoes were cajun style (e.g., black). Eggs and bacon were nothing special. The bathrooms are located behind the kitchen. Overall, just a very dirty restaurant with so-so food.

  • Justin L.

This place felt very rustic and like its been there a long time, which I like for a diner. The woman who took our order, went behind the counter and cooked our food as well, which I don't see too often - felt like we were eating in her home. For someone from the northeast, this was a fun taste of divey southern dining. I had the biscuits and sausage gravy and it was delicious. I would say if you're an out-of-towner, this place delivers on both environment and food.

so i went to nashville for 4 days...ha...i wind up at hermitage cafe and my buddy winds up here twice..not much open after the bars close on broadway...the food is good..not great..but there are no menus..its all over the walls...i had the eggs with ham..but the real item you need to get is the hot dog...hahaha its comes butterflied on a hamburger bun..it made my experience that nite perfect. hit this place up and holler at my boy worthington washington..im sure he never leaves

Hermitage Cafe is definitely more about the experience and the super late night convenience than about the quality of the food. The food is your standard cheap breakfast/lunch fare, but the prices reflect that. I've never been before 3 in the morning, so I don't know what the day crowd is like (or why they are there when there are actual options) but the late crowd is always colorful. Unsurprisingly, there's a lot of drunk kids hanging out, but it makes for a social experience. It's the informed drunks after all because they knew there was a cooler option than WaHo. I stepped outside for a smoke break at just the right moment because a couple of the waitresses were outside smoking as well. They have got a wealth of great stories about the Hermitage Cafe. Get them talking if you get the chance.

Southern, classic diner, all American food is what comes to mind when eating at the Hermitage Cafe. This place gets a bad rap because the floors are filthy (they are) and the ceiling leaks water on your head ( it does) and the place reeks of old grease and hasn't seen a cleaning since the day it opened (all probably true) but that's not unusual for diners as its all about the food anyway. While waiting for our food we were entertained with the blues and the cook singing right along, the lovely woman bringing us silverware asking how "my baby" is doing today a most endearing term used by my dear departed southern grandma. It's defiantly a diner in the truest sense of the word where the servers are concerned state your order don't make a fuss and don't expect it to come to your table as you ordered it but if you follow the diner etiquette it will be amazing! The omelette I ordered was made to order and hot with my chili cheese fries on the side just as I expect from a diner in other words heaven on a greasy plate. The food here is so delicious the charm of a classic diner is so prevalent you seem to forget it's not the cleanest place on earth. Give it a try you won't be sorry

There is a new reigning champ of the most terrifying bathroom experience in my (almost) 28 years. This is where you go far after the bewitching hour. There is table service, no menus. Bottled water only, which might be for the best. Several minutes after ordering a super buttery grilled cheese and tomato was delivered on a little plastic plate that reminds me of the hospital. Don't use the bathroom. Apparently they try to only let female patrons use it, but it doesn't help with the fact it's super gross and you feel like you are getting led to a backroom to get murdered in when brought there. Seems that scary bathrooms are a hallmark of late night haunts (see Charlie's kitchen in Boston for another example). Remember to have cash (no, not Johnny)

A good American diner. On a road trip through America ticking off a traditional American diner was on the menu. Good southern style food and a good array of staff and customers with the banter to match. I felt that they were playing up to their image a little but not so much as to take away from the fun of it. The carpet hadn't been changed in decades and it felt very lived in. I would have given more stars but I think I made the wrong food choice. I had the steak breakfast which while passable wasn't as appetising as all my friends choices. It was an OK meal hence a-ok. The other food looked better. I would probably give four stars.

OK. The Hermitage Cafe is where you need to "end" up after a night on Broadway. Period. After two consecutive weekends singing karaoke and having a fun night on the town, I found myself coming back on two very similar evenings. Roll in late at night and order the biscuits and gravy. JUST DO IT. They come smothered in a delicious white gravy with lots of black pepper. YES. I also tried the grilled cheese and grilled chicken sandwich, and both were fantastic. Prices are very cheap ($4.00 for a sandwich and potatoes) and the place is just an experience overall. Check it out for some awesome drunk food. The only annoyance is that they are cash only!

These guys and girl are pros, stopped in today and ordered two cheese burgers and fries. The guy on this small flat top had steak, eggs, burgers, potatoes, bacon, and bread for sandwiches, All at different stages on the grill cooking each to order. The lady who took our orders, and brought the food had every table plus counter under control. Can't say enough, I love their attitudes and interaction with each other and the customers. Going to add this to our every other weekend lunch stop.

This place was really cool. Its like a real dinner. The conversation and banter among employees and customers is awesome. I like to people watch / easdrop when I eat lol. The food was greasy and great ! Perfect portion. And the cook came over multiple times to make sure we felt at home. Her name was "MAMA TT " and she was awesome !!! If she opened her own diner I def eat there. Go check her out she is awesome. And the food is really cheap for Nashville's overpriced ass.

Amazing food and open super late! It's a bit of a walk from the Broadway strip but the staff is very friendly and welcoming. The food didn't take long at all and it was great!! I know I will be eating here at least one more time before leaving music city!

YIKES. I saw the great reviews and walked in on Sunday morning with my husband. Floors: Stained and COVERED IN FOOD. Air: Full of flies and it smelled awful. I mean. awful. It was so unappetizing that I couldn't sit down. This is all I can offer for a review, because clearly we did not eat that after "enjoying" all the above for the 60 seconds we were in the building. I'll pass.

The ambience here is definitely greasy spoon. Which is okay when you're looking for a well-crafted fast meal at a low price but this establishment provided only the greasy aspect of the meal. Sanitation here appears only as an afterthought. I had an omelette with bacon and cheese and breakfast potatoes extra crispy. The omelette was a substandard three egg basic with only two slices of bacon one slice of processed cheese. The breakfast potatoes were prepared only slightly crispy which was a disappointment as I had asked for well done. As mentioned in other reviews, the coffee kept flowing and Kim the waitress was very pleasant. Only stop here if you are in need of a greasy breakfast experience and have cash only.

no frills, not for posers. this is a modest eatery. i went in for breakfast to go. they were super busy but i still managed to get my order in less than 10 minutes. very affordable. unfortunately i havent tried much of their menu, just my breakfast sandwich but their biscuits and gravy looks and smells delicious. i can see how some people wouldnt like this place cause they dont have truffle fries here. what the fuck is truffle anyways? youre such a truffle! truffle boy, go truff yourself.

Unless you have a love for the nostalgia of the South, don't go to the Hermitage cafe. Don't expect your typical hipster Nashville restaurant. This place is a perfect example of a southern greasy spoon and we wouldn't have it any other way. Wear your trucker hat, play some tom petty on their Juke Box , order some chicken fried steak and enjoy. Long live Hermitage Cafe

If Waffle House was local to Nashville, but a hell of a lot better, it would be called Hermitage Cafe. Dive diner for the better, easily located downtown with ample parking. Good for groups, but I go alone, and enjoy it as well! Best patty melt I have ever had. The service is great too. I always sit at the bar.
