I've been eating here for years and now my kids love it too. Hot and sour soup like no other! The owner knows us by name every time we come in. If you can sit down make sure to grab carry out. Very generous portions. Make sure to come hungry

This place is a huge hit or miss. Sometimes the food is great, such as the sweet and sour chicken. Other times the food just doesn't taste fresh at all so beware!

The last time I had Chinese food, it was in NYC/Chinatown/Dim Sum authentic insanity. I'm a big time Chinese food snob and only go out of my way for the real stuff these days. My Memphis family chose Formosa as our gathering spot for an early dinner last night (since they all really like it). It's definitely an old-school Chinese "restaurant" with white linen tablecloths under glass; food served on large oval metal plates with metal covers..etc. The staff was super friendly and didn't mind that we sat around and took up space to catch up on family stuff (and go goo goo over the babies at our table)... waaaay after we finished eating. (When I said an "early dinner".... we beat the senior citizen crowd last night...which they seem to have a pretty solid contingency of on a Friday evening). I kept it simple since I've had some orthodontist work recently - I stuck with soft(er) foods: -Hot and Sour soup - very good as the other reviews say. Different from what I've had in the past as it's quite a bit sweeter than I'm used to - but definitely tasty. -Hot and Spicy Wontons - this is what I ordered for dinner (it's an appetizer but it's a very generous portion) - I think there were 6 wontons (I shared so that I wouldn't eat them all!) served in a bowl of a spicy soy-based sauce. Yum - had a very good kick. -Steamed dumplings - they only had pork dumplings (was hoping for veggie) - these were shared with the table and they were great. Side sauce was nice - super salty/tangy/onion-y (the way it's supposed to be). There are 10 per order (again - big portion!) -Fried Rice - ordered 2 of these for the table (there were 5 adults and 2 little ones - there was a ton left over...). Really good flavor - not too greasy - incredibly generous portions. The other entrees ordered (that I didn't try but got rave reviews) were: -Shrimp and Lobster sauce -Shrimp and Vegetables -Spicy Chicken Formosa was a nice surprise; I would go back there again if I had a hankering for Chinese in Memphis.

Definitely a new favorite Chinese lunch spot. Formosa has a plentiful selection of dishes at a very reasonable lunch price $6.75. I tried the spicy shrimp with vegetables which came with fried rice a homemade egg roll a spicy chicken wing a bowl of hot and sour soup and a Chinese donut. It was so much food and all delicious! The soup was very hot with the perfect touch of vinegar. It was so soothing on a chilly fall day. The servers were friendly and got us in and out very quickly since we were on a right schedule. I will definitely return to try the steamed dumplings and the other dishes.

We have been eating here for over 20 years. It is a traditional Chinese American restaurant, family run with three generations mostly women. Everyone is friendly, seated promptly this evening. Sever immediately brought wate, took our order. The food was fresh and well prepared. The flavor and spice were right., the portions are very large, the food is fresh. The price makes this small neighborhood restaurant a Jewell. We are sorry to be moving out of the area in a few weeks and it will make to go no longer possible but maybe we can still make the ride for dine in.

This has developed into my favorite Memphis Chinese food spot. They score perfect in every aspect of what they offer. They have a great menu and the lunch menu is ridiculously good and insanely cheap. Therefore, as for getting your moneys worth, well this place surpasses that. It's a heck of a bargain for taste and food quality. All their meals they produce, they make them with excellent technique and they always throw in a little something unique. They continuously add something I have yet to come across from other Chinese restaurants not only in Memphis, but from anywhere I have indulged before. For example, lets take the steamed dumplings or pot stickers, whichever one you refer to them as, at this place they are amazing. They are so succulent and rich. They have become a delightful discovery. They are served atop of a bed of perfectly cooked vegetables served along with mild or hot dipping sauce with steamed white rice on the side. UNBELIEVABLE!!! So, for those that love steamed dumplings and not the "Northern" Chinese version, or "puffy" dumpling. These have the thin texture in which I am more partial to, so there's your disclaimer. They have some of the best spring rolls I have ever eaten. Crunchy, with a great mix of vegetables and meat. The fried shrimp is perfect, not greasy, instead crunchy and shrimp meaty and cooked perfectly. I love their house fried rice, it us always full of meat and such. So, if you're in the area try them out, especially for lunch since its such a bargain.

Formosa is fantastic. This is as far from your run of the mill corn starch laden chicken dishes as it gets. The entrees are perfectly balanced, and the egg drop soup is out of this world! Absolutely everything I've had here has been the best of the best. Take advantage of the lunch special; it's a heck of a deal.

Best Chinese in Memphis! Kung Pao Beef not on menu but they will make it for you and it rocks! Our fav Chinese for 20 years. Mr. Eddie trained the team well and they continue to put out superb food. The Man-Tao's are delicious with their home-made Duck sauce.

By far the best Hot and Sour Soup I have ever had. The food is always great here. It is an upscale chinese restaraunt with affordable prices. Business has dropped over the years and Im guessing its because the neighborhood is not as disirable as it once was because the food and service is excellent. The portion sizes are huge and you can easily order one dish for 2 people at dinner. The lunch specials are very good because you get soup, a chicken wing, an eggroll, and an entree cheap. It is well worth the drive for the hot and sour soup alone.

First time in Formosa. I scanned through their menu trying to identify the most authentic Chinese dishes in it and quickly decided on the Formosa Duck. Sorry we don't have it because our oven is broken, I was told. So I settled for Ma Po Tofu and steamed dumplings, saving the twice-cooked pork for next time. The verdict: they were far from authentic, but still good. To replace the ground meat in Ma Po Tofu with diced Char Sui ( Chinese BBQ pork) was rather unorthodox but we enjoyed being able to pick up the diced meat with chopsticks and the meat was pretty tasty, though one could also argue that it only remotely resembled Char Sui. I also give them credits for using the right kind of tofu: the soft silky kind not medium or firm, which resulted in a delightful mess that went well with white rice. This is a dish for true tofu lovers. Their dumplings were more like Sui Mai in shapes and skins but the meatiness would satisfy the carnivore in us. I was surprised to find Formosa to be a rather nice sit-down restaurant with white linen tablecloths, and a boss who has a great sense of humor. It's worth coming back. Please fix the oven.

To say that this place is nothing special would be high praise. Even the most mediocre Chinese restaurants where I lived previously were better than Formosa. I ordered the Family Dinner for 4, and the dishes were all either too greasy or totally bland. Not a good experience at all. By the way, I found out that I have a sensitivity to MSG after eating here. I actually developed VERTIGO a few hours after I finished the meal, and apparently that is one of the potential complications of MSG "poisoning". Also - sorry - severe diarrhea. If you like being dizzy on the toilet for 8-12 hours, eat at this restaurant...

I have been eating here for years and am always pleased with the food. The service is always attentive. The vegetable soup is a perfect start to a meal. For the entree we ordered the sesame chicken and loved the light crispy crust. The bonus was having enough for lunch the next day.

Chinese food is my favorite cuisine, and Formosa has the best Chinese lunch in Memphis. I have not gotten take out or even had dinner - due to the location (I live fairly far away), I have only had lunch. I've had a few different items, but the Ta-Chin Chicken is superb (think General's chicken, with more vegetables and a richer sauce). The lunch comes with choice of soup (their hot and sour is very, very good - especially on a cold day), a fried chicken wing (not a customary item for a Chinese lunch, but very good!), an egg roll, and fried rice (some of the best plain fried rice you'll ever have). They even give you a Chinese donut as part of the meal. All this for around $6! I'd probably pay $10 for this kind of quality! If you love a good Chinese lunch special, you're missing out if you don't try Formosa.

Ahhh Formosa. How have I missed giving them a review yet? Well, after eating there for lunch last week, I figured it was time. I love the food at Formosa, and I really love Formosa's lunch specials. Formosa has a wonderful selection of Asian food, and in my opinion, it's one of the best Chinese restaurants in Memphis. I have enjoyed nearly every dish I have had there. I'm a huge fan of their Kung Pao chicken, Formosa fried rice and egg drop soup. They have some amazing dishes, and they pile your plates with food. While I love going to Formosa for dinner, eating there for lunch blows my mind. You pick out a dish (i.e. Kung Pao chicken) and with it comes a spring roll, a type of chicken wing (random, but good), your choice of egg drop or hot and sour soup (both delicious), fried rice and something that resembles a giant sugar-coated donut hole. Is your mind blown yet? If not, here's the kicker: All of this delicious food is under $10. In fact, my meal today came to a whopping $6.29. You will leave happy and full AND you will have a few extra dollars to spare. You are welcome.

Okay, admittedly I thought that this would strictly be an restaurant based on the name. It's Chinese, and its interior boasts nice decor -- and I really enjoyed my hot and sour soup. I made a special request -- and I wasn't given the side-eye. Bonus.

If you live in Memphis you probably know about Formosa. If not then GO EAT HERE! Best hot and sour soup in the city. Good service for a quick lunch. Really can't go wrong with anything on the menu. Closed on Mondays. U2 has been known to eat here when in town.

Nice place for Chinese food that doesn't involve a buffet line. DO NOT pass up on the hot and sour soup, it was the best I've ever had. For less than $10 you get enough food for dinner and leftover lunch for the next day.

OK, I gave it 3 stars, but if I could it would be 2 1/2 stars. Food is OK, nothing spectacular. We like the Hot and Sour Won Ton appetizer, but tonight it was not very hot and not very spicy. We kept it simple, Kung Pao Chicken and Mixed Vegetables. Both seemed to be in almost the same kind of sauce, like a generic grayish sauce. The mixed veggies were OK, not very exciting. The Kung Pao was not very spicy at all (we did ask for it 'medium"), not as good as North China Inn on Knight-Arnold that closed. It comes with rice, again another serving of blandness. The soya sauce at the table seems watered down. When you pour it on the rice, it looks watery. Service is quick and seems a bit hurried. The fortune cookie and the orange slices were good! Total cost including 2 iced teas was $24.

My family's favorite Chinese (Taiwanese?) food restaurant. Formosa offers fantastic lunchtime meal deals (~$5-6/person at 11-2?). The portions are fantastically sized and will leave you full and satisfied (possibly with left-overs). Each lunch is served with a spring roll and fried chicken, a soup, a side of rice or fried-rice, donut, and entree. They offer many dishes that range from the familiar (such as breaded chicken dishes) to the more exotic. The presentation is always fantastic, and their restaurant interior is very appealing. Their service is spotless and never fails to please. They are prompt with the arrival of food and always time the arrival of the next course at just the right time. The dishes that I would recommend are the Dah Chine Chicken, the Hot and Sour soup, and the Kung Pao Chicken. There is absolutely no reason to skip this restaurant for lunch. Try it yourself and see if you can find a better deal.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
