Just about every visit I make to Hohenwald results in a visit to the River Rat. They are great if you are just stopping in for a beer, or plan to sit down and have dinner. They are one of the few places in town that serve beer with dinner, and in my opinion, the best place. And the only spot in town with Yuengling on tap! The appetizers are all great, but I gotta go with the fried green beans or cheddar peppers. The wings are fantastic, and I always get an order when I stop by. The main entrees are also pretty tasty. My favorites are the baked cod and the ribs, but I hear they've got a good burger as well. However, the sides are certainly lacking inspiration. The vegetables are bland and mushy. I'm not sure they even add the basics such as salt and pepper. The mashed potatoes are also bland, but at least they are real potatoes. Don't get the white beans - no bueno. There are plenty of big TVs to watch the big game. They've also got pool tables, and often have live bands playing. Don't be off-put by the store front or interior atmosphere. It looks a little dive-y, but the place is on the level. It's even family friendly before 9 (when they start busting out the loud music). And what review about the River Rat would be complete without mention of their rockin' staff? This place has the best and most friendly servers in town. They always make my visit. The owners are both great, and chances are you'll meet them. Steve always makes his rounds to visit with his guests. If you're passing through Hohenwald, don't miss the River Rat!

Stuffed jalepenos were great. My wifes reuben was delicious as was my hamburger. The onion rings and fries were typical. The waitress was super!! The only draw back was that the smallest hamburger is a 1/2 pounder. Way too big for me.

In town for the Fourth week camping and wow what a steak! The two places here in town were closed but today, Sunday the River Rat was open. I like a steak to taste well like steak if ya all know whatI mean and this place hit a home run. Inexpensive and came with a free really good cheese cake. My friend had the ribs, tender and Tennessee style, also perfect. The bartender Debbie and I think owner Barbra were excellent servers. Will be eating here more this week and hope to get pics next time. Great stop not far too from the Trace!

We came to Hohenwald, Tn to volunteer at the Elephant Sanctuary and found the River Rat Grill. We are glad we did! We were so hungry after working hard all day and were ready for a big meal. We started with an appetizer trio of Cheese sticks, onion rings, and mushrooms. Everything was perfectly prepared and delicious. My husband ordered the BBQ ribs and said they were very good. I ordered the Allyoucaneat Catfish and it was Excellent!!! Even the tartar and coleslaw were perfect.. Service was great...owner even came by to check on us. If we weren't 5 hours away we would come here all the time. Worth every penny!

Great fried mushrooms! We stopped in for lunch on day that wasn't particularly sunny and the lighting was pretty dim so it definitely wasn't a festive feel. It was a bar after all so maybe that was the ambiance they wanted. The service was slow so I wouldn't recommend stopping here for lunch if you only have an hour unless you are eating off the buffet. We started with an appetizer platter that was pick 3 and chose the fried mushrooms, potato skins, and mozzarella sticks. The potato skins and cheese sticks were good but the mushrooms were fantastic. The Turkey Club sandwich came out with the appetizers but I didn't mind. The sandwich was good. I will be back for more fried mushrooms and to try other entrees.

The food was very good but the service was SLOW. It took 30 minutes for 4 sandwiches and a plate of ribs. They claim that it takes a minimum of 20 minutes for the ribs but I have never waited that long for ribs before. We also ordered the Chicken Parmesan sandwich special but got full blown Chicken Parmesan. Once the food arrived, it was very good. Management seemed unconcerned about our wait and blamed the waitress for not telling us how long it would take. My advice, if you are in a hurry, stay away from the ribs.

If you are looking for a place to have a beer with dinner, this is the place in town. If you want a live band in a smoke-free place, go here. But if you are looking for good food, go across the street to Junkyard Dog or Rio Colorado. The menu is similar to JYD, but everything is about a buck more and the quality is lower. Once I was served fried catfish that were pretty much inedible mush -- frozen and thawed too many times. Drive east to Fall Hollow Village at the Trace if you want good catfish. Most of the time the food is serviceable, but not great and certainly not the best in town on its own merits. River Rat is only on our list of restaurants when we have guests who insist on a beer, or when everyone else is closed.

Great food at a great price. One of the best values I've seen at a restaurant in quite awhile. The atmosphere is certainly not pretentious. This is definitely a casual small town diner. But the food is surprisingly good. This is the kind of community gathering place and eatery that people hope to find in a small southern town. I highly recommend it. Between them and the Junkyard Dog, you have the bases covered in this off the beaten path town. But the prices here definitely beat the Junkyard Dog! Order the Beef Kabobs. Awesome!
