The meat and veggies are pretty good and the portions are sizable, although you pay for it. It was over $11 with tax for one meat, 2 veggies and a water. The turnip greens are fantastic as well as the mashed potatoes and gravy. The chicken and dumplins were sub-par and the cranberry sauce was right out of a can. The last few times I've been I've had very slow service and the same waitress who doesn't really seem to care. I won't be going back any time soon. If the service was good at all I would have provided a higher rating.

It was ok. Nothing I ate would send me running back for more. I kinda wanted to run away

Are you looking for some good home cooking, the kind your grandma made for Sunday Dinner? Do you like good, scratch-made dishes and good serving folk? Right in the heart of Germantown?? Well, you need to check out West St. Diner. My wife and I have eaten at West St. Diner for several years now and have always had great food. The head waitress has been serving her regulars and everyone else for 16 years because she loves her customers as much as she loves what she does. They've even had the same head chef for the 25 years the doors have been open. I've had many of the dishes, and can't pick a favorite - because they're all good. You need to get some good scratch-made food and decide for yourself which is your favorite.

I was really impressed with this place. I admit, I'm a huge fan of Perkins omelettes and it feels like nothing will ever be quite as good as theirs, but this was just as tasty for me. The first time I came I got the Western Omelette with hash browns and biscuits. It was flatter than I've had at other places, but no less tasty. The cheesegrits were ok for a few bites but I just wasn't fond of them. (I'd told them I'd never tried them and they kindly gave me a free sample). I'm not really that fond of cheese nor grits, so I wasn't surprised when I discovered the combination did not do it for me. I also tried their home-made sourdough biscuits and enjoyed what I did eat (I got full on the rest of it and didn't finish them). In general, the food tastes a little more "real" in that they didn't seem like they came from a factory and the ingredients were fresh, not bough pre-packaged from the store. I came back with some friends and was actually a little disappointed. I loved the omelette I got before but there isn't a lot of variety here, so there's not a lot of room to experiment. There are a few other options for omelettes but they're pretty plain. You can add what you want from a choice of ham, peppers, onions, cheese, and mushrooms. But adding all that I want basically turns it into a Western Omelette. I got the Reuben the second time and it was good but I think I'll stick with coming here when I'm craving omelettes. Liked: - Biscuits - Hash Browns - Reuben - Western Omelette Didn't like: - Cheese Grits

I have been here a few times and it is not a quality food place. The meat and 3 meals are all canned products and or frozen meat patties. Maybe the only thing that was cooked was the corn bread, but even that was not great. I would not waste money there anymore - too many better places to go to in the area.

Honestly not the greatest. Cute little place. Waitress too busy bustling around to give proper attention. Needed to ask for coffee refill - order was incorrect. Food was not the greatest. Could have made something at home much better. Sorry.

The food here is exceptionally disappointing. I had a BOGO coupon for this place and still felt ripped off. Portions were small, food was awful, ambiance was dirty and dated, and left me wishing I had gone to some fast food place and getting drive thru breakfast. The only redeeming factor here was that our server wasn't as terrible as the food. Memphis has far too many good places for one to waste their time, money, and appetite here.

The food here is mediocre. I've given it a few tries and have been disappointed each try. The staff is nice and friendly; however, the food falls short. The diner is charming and could be a hot spot if the food improved.

Lovely hidden treasure. . cozy lil spot that packs a big punch. The food is good and the staff very friendly. The prices are really reasonable too. Great alternative to the over priced, mundane chain restaurants. Check it out for yourself.. Would definitely be a regular spot.

I live near the diner so it is very convenient. Food is always good. Staff is very friendly. Sweet biscuits are outstanding. Nothing to write home about but once you have been you know what to expect. I always enjoy the customers that are there.

The atmosphere is pretty good for a mom & pop restaurant. The food however is something else. I ordered catfish with yams and green beans (served with biscuits and cornbread). The catfish was pretty good, however the yams and green beans were definitely canned and microwaved. The biscuits and cornbread were fresh, at some point - maybe that morning. They were old and microwaved by the time they got to our table. My uncle ordered the happy waitress. This is an open-faced grilled cheese with tomatoes and bacon. The cheese was just Kraft singles. We expected better. The server was nice, but we did have to ask for refills. Patrons should never have to ask for drink refills.

My favorite Germantown, TN greasy spoon. This restaurant is a diner ...nothing more and nothing less. Good plate lunches everyday and the menu varies Monday- Friday for plate lunches. They also serve breakfast all day for you bacon lovers. I really enjoy the chopped sirloin steak with grilled onions, italian spinach, and any of their veggies. The breakfast options are awesome and the blueberry pancakes rock! Also any of their homemade pies and banana pudding....yum!!! The staff and cooks are all very friendly and the prices are reasonable. I have been here many times and will go back. Give it a try! Oh yeah...try the CHEESEBURGER, it may be one of the best in the city!

This is a local hole-in-the-wall type diner. The food is only okay. I had the Reuben last night, which was decent, but the french fries were sopping with grease. They server was very kind and attentive. I really think this place would benefit from a face lift. It is located right in the middle of a great Germantown shopping district, so the location is very convenient. There are not many other restaurant options in the area, but I probably will not go back to this place.

I love the old Mom & Pop diners like this one. Not many of them left in Memphis. It always smells like my grandmother's kitchen when I walk in the door. The breakfast here is just great. Had lunch the other day and the country fried steak with gravy was very good. Good vegetables and salad. The corn bread and sweet bread are excellent. Desserts are all home-made. It is crowded on the weekend and seating is limited.

Food is not very good. I ordered the French toast, and it was so bad I could not finish it. How can you mess up French toast? Way over priced too. What a shame because Germantown needs a good diner.

I had breakfast there this morning, after meaning to do so for the last 12 years. I had my standard test breakfast of biscuits, gravy, and over-easy eggs. The eggs were cooked and seasoned perfectly. The biscuits were pretty good, but had a texture that reminded me of a buiscuit roll - not flaky and not much buttery taste - they are not as good as Bryant's. The sausage gravy was good - better than Bryant's or Blue Plate. It was fairly light, and I would have preferred the rouix to have been browned more. Also, I would have liked (and would pay up for) some crumbles of sausage in the gravy. The coffee was not very good - but sweetner and cream in a packet made it drinkable. It was a good value for the money, and the service was quick and good. I'll go back.

Thoroughly impressed with this hole-in-the-wall diner! I was visiting from out of town and looking for a place to eat breakfast one day, when I saw a Groupon ( groupon.com/r/uu159756 ) for this place! The ambiance was very "mom's kitchen table" to me. The tables had vinyl tablecloths of an orangy color and the booth seats were made of leather complete with the comforting tears and holes that lets you know many have come before you to eat the deliciousness of West Street Diner. They even have a booth area up front with a true 50s feel: leather covered swivel stools, black and white checkered tile, and a full-on view of the sweaty kitchen workers greasing up the griddle for your eggs. I ordered the blueberry pancakes, sausage, and grits. I was expecting blueberries inside of my pancakes, but got 3 humongous plain pancakes covered with the biggest mound of blueberries I have ever seen (see picture)!! I think my eyes nearly shot out of my head when I saw the dish placed in front of me. The grits never came which I was later told by staff it was a "tragedy"- but to me I was very lucky I didn't have any more food to eat! All the food was average, or possibly better than average. It's a diner- I don't think the food is supposed to be gourmet! All items were very reasonably priced, and the staff feels like family. All the customers that came in seemed like regulars, as the staff greeted them by name and would spend time chit-chatting with them. Whether you are feeling eggs sunny side up or are just trying to cure a hangover, I would definitely recommend West Street Diner over any Denny's or other chain breakfast joint. Keep your local businesses... in business! This one's worth a try!

This place is so gross!! We went there on New Years Day. It was freezing outside. If I didn't have an infant and two-year old I would have left. But it is such a hassle to get back in the car and find something else that is open on that day. We are new to the area so we gave it a shot. Just sitting there- dirty menus (cleaned never?) dirty plastic table cloths that are stapled on (replaced never?), floors, covered in grime. Chairs unwiped. So nasty. I only ate half my food. We sat by a cracked window with tape over it. After seeing the inside I started wondering what the kitchen looked like. I live down the street but wouldn't go back if you paid me.

We leave tried to get in this place for awhile but it's always so crowded because it has limited seating. Go early if you don't want to wait. My friends had the roast turkey plate and there was plenty of food. I had the patty melt (a diner standard) but was not impressed. Burger was overlooked and the rye bread seemed a little stale and was greasy. Service was good. I guess I expected too much.

Wow. This might be the most disappointing restaurant I've ever been in. I've driven past this spot numerous time, and I always wanted to try it. Unfortunately, Groupon made that a reality. This dingy, decrepit, disgusting restaurant is located on West St (obviously) as you make you way towards Sam's Club. For those of you not familiar with the area, they have been doing construction on this road for at least 9 months (the entire time I've lived in Memphis), and they have yet to make an iota of progress. Because of the traffic congestion caused by the the construction, getting into the restaurant is a pain. When we parked, I thought the restaurant looked nice. It has a pretty brick facade, a cute little sign, and tinted windows. When we entered however, it was an entirely different experience. The place is FILTHY. I'm not talking about Qwick Check its-old-but-charming. I'm talking about Contagion-level filth. I am not a germaphobe. I can not think of one instance in the past when I voluntarily used hand sanitizer. I did today. Thrice. And I'm the same guy who believes in the five second rule, and once ate a cheeseburger I found in my car when I hadn't been to the drive thru in about a month. But this place is otherworldly filthy. The tint on the windows is actually years of accumulated build-up of grease, funk, and sweat. The table is covered in a table cloth that I guarantee has never been removed, and has so many unknown substances on it that a Forensic Pathologist would be hard pressed to identify them all. There is a blanket of dust on top of the fan that slowly sprinkles down onto your food like extra seasoning as the fan rotates. The floor is covered in a film of slime so thick it actually muffles your footsteps. Don't even get me started on the condiments that adorned the table that were still covered in whatever the last customer had on their hands when they touched them. And those are the best parts. The "food" at this location is laughable. I literally thought my plate was doing stand-up. I ordered a Western omelet and the apple pancakes. The Western omelet was about the size of a dollar bill and as flat as one, too. It was supposed to be filled with onions, green peppers, ham, and cheese. It failed to live up to even those mediocre expectations. In fact, the pancake was actually thicker than the omelet. The pancake itself was the sole redeeming characteristic of the restaurant. It was big and fluffy, and almost edible. Then I tried some of the apple topping. I have no idea how this spot is open. I hope somebody with OCD and a pallet had the balls to come in and buy and attempt to resurrect it. Maybe, if we're lucky Chef Gordon Ramsey will read this review and schedule this "restaurant" on the new season of Kitchen Nightmares.

Food was okay, but not great. Service was disappointing. We had to ask for the same thing multiple times - even had to ask for syrup, with a table full of pancakes! Utensils were dirty, and the bathroom was nastier than some truckstops...

Coffee: West St. Diner's coffee was utilitarian, but better than average. It wasn't oily or too strong. Biscuit: The biscuits were about an inch and a half thick and so doughy that I felt like I may never be able to chew them up enough to actually swallow. They tasted alright, but be sure you've got something to wash them down with. Bacon: West St. has by far the biggest slices of bacon I've seen from any of the places on the bracket. They were decently crispy, but a little heavy on the grease. Scrambled Eggs: The scrambled eggs were pretty tasty. The ratio of fluffiness to runniness was dead on, and they had good, eggy flavor. Pancake: This pancake was so good, I can't repeat what I wrote about it in my notes. It was huge and fluffy and a little sweet without the addition of syrup. Watch your back, Brother Juniper. Grits: West St.'s grits came with cheese already mixed into them. They were more sticky than watery, though. Service: The service at West St. Diner was friendly and efficient, but nothing remarkable. Atmosphere: West St. Diner's seating area feels very bright and homey. However, there seemed to be some lights out over the counter where you pay, which made things a little drab. The mid-morning crowd was mostly groups of older people taking their time over coffee and biscuits. Price: The price seemed a bit high, even though the portions are large. The total was about $14 for the meal and drinks.

This is small little diner that has decent breakfast and southern food. Not too many choices and the food comes quick.

It's a *Diner* and a decent one at that. Family operated, pleasant staff, good, efficient friendly service, and very good straight forward country-style cooking. We've eating there periodically for years and plan to keep it up. A few extra beans in the coffee would be nice, though.

Great hole in the wall diner for those who don't mind a simple laid back atmosphere with good food, fast friendly service, and good prices. You see the regular old timers hanging out having their usual. Roll out of bed and come as you are. Casual atmosphere and good food.

I eat here about twice a month. This is a true diner. Please go in with those expectations and you won't be disappointed. I enjoy their grits and bacon. If ordered scrabbled, the eggs tend to be overcooked...but I know and expect it It's a little bit of nostalgia and reminds me of Mel's Diner (eek...showing me age)
