On this trip from Ohio to South Carolina, I was hoping for an authentic barbecue experience. It doesn't get any more authentic (and delicious) than Pappy's. Pappy's is no frills. But that's just because they put most of their energy and attention into the food. And it shows. The pork and ribs were insanely good and didn't even need sauce. The hush puppies and fried okra were the best I've ever had. But we topped it all off with mama's peach cake, which I may have dreams about later. Seriously. It's that good. In addition to great food, pappy and his family are some of the kindest and most caring you're likely to meet. They're a family chasing their dreams and doing it together. Beautiful. (And did I mention delicious?)

Pappy's was an overall good experience for us. I won't say it's the best BBQ I've ever had but it surprised me. I loved the Mac and cheese and chicken breast. The ribs were decent. I wasn't a fan of the cole slaw but I usually like sweeter slaw. I also really enjoyed the variety of sauce options. We will be sure to stop here again if ever back in the area.

  • David B.

The barbecue was too dry I did not care for the barbecue sauce The fries were soggy The green beans were mushy Will not go there again

This place has great brisket and tasty BBQ sauce. I also enjoy the jalipeno hush puppies. It's a small joint with delicious food. They take cards, but being cash. Small businesses lose so much money with credit cards.

I loved it, I had the brisket and it was delicious, the guy was really cool and said I will be back and he's right I will be

Never knew this place was there, unassuming building in a out of the way location. Was skeptical upon walking in...No smoke or bbq smell at all, and a microwave on the counter (It wasn't used). Ordered the brisket plate w mac n cheese and collard greens. Brisket was tender but almost had no smoke flavor. Mac n cheese was decent. Greens were dry, but with a little added vinegar, were fine. Interior was clean and "homey". Owner was a nice guy that greets you with a "Hello neighbor". Overall, it wasn't the best...But def not the worst. I'd go back to give the rest of the menu a try...

  • Megan B.

Oh my God...is all I can say... So much better than Uncle Ray's. The macaroni and cheese was creamy and awesome and the okra was light and crispy. After having mouth surgery last week, this was the first time I have had real food. It was amazing. I got a brisket sandwich and it was moist and flavorful while my husband got a pulled pork sandwich and then went back to get a brisket sandwich! I think we all enjoyed ourselves and my daughter loves their baked beans. You can tell that they really care about the quality of their food. We will be back soon!

  • Todd S.

We got here a little before close on a Monday night. He was so welcoming and we had a great dinner. He recommended the brisket and it didn't disappoint. I chose the 3 cheese mac n cheese and some jalapeño hush puppies as sides: both great. His homemade sauces are really good too. Do yourself a favor and visit Pappy's. If he's not slammed ask him about he came to open up this BBQ joint...cool story. I'll be back next time I'm in town!

An extraordinary level of suck. Hands down the worst barbecue I've had in my entire life. Started lunch at Pappy's Barbecue, ended lunch at Jimmy John's. Ribs were deplorable and a sorry excuse for ribs at that. Disgusting rancid flavor, mushy meat, all combined with an astounding lack of technique. Leaving the silver skin on is just lazy--not that taking it off wouldn't have made the ribs any better. So bad I left an entire plate of ribs. Whoever owns this place has clearly given up and doesn't care. So long, and thanks for the junk barbecue.

This place is absolutely amazing. The owner is incredibly friendly and has a true passion for his craft. I'm not sure how many people consider BBQ a craft but that is the only way to describe the absolutely incredible food I got here. The brisket is to die for and the homemade sweet and hot sauces are the best BBQ sauce I've ever had. Jalapeño Hushpuppies have just the right amount of Jalapeño in them and are awesome too. More than anything, I can't express enough how great the customer service is here. A MUST-STOP joint if you're passing by!

  • T D.

Warm welcome that instantly soured when we asked for unsweet tea. It went something like this: "are ya'll from the north?" "No, originally from California." "Oh, well that's just as bad." Order the combo ribs and pulled pork. Wife had the brisket sandwich. Everything tasted like grease. No smoke ring, no smoke flavor, no returning for this couple.

  • Nate P.

Do not be discouraged by the outside appearance. This place is amazing. There BBQ sauces are delicious, I loved the "hot". Fried okra was awesome and so were the jalapeño hush puppies. My wife loves the tater salad and my kids love the mac and cheese.

  • Deva M.

Absolutely wonderful and delicious food. If you love BBQ this is a great place to go. I love the feel of the place.. The prices are really decent and they give you a decent size amount of food to eat. If you love good food this place is one to check out.. I have never been disappointed by them.

  • Bill B.

Get familiar with the menu before you order. I missed out on some unique sides like the jalapeno cheese grits, and the fresh cut french fries. Make sure you leave room for the made-from-scratch cakes.

  • john v.

You would be very wise to stop by here if you're driving through. We had absolutely amazing brisket, jalapeño hush puppies, and grits. Excellent!!

    (5)
  • Bodedo D.

The pork could've had a more smoky flavor without having to add the sauce other than that the sides were good the jalapeno hush puppies were very good the french fries are very good not the best barbecue ive had in South Carolina though it ranks up there. Glad they did not have any mustard sauce

    (4)
  • Leila V.

You may want to drive away when you see Pappy's. Resist the urge. Go in and order brisket, ribs or jalapeno hush puppies. It is amazing and cheap. You won't regret it.

    (5)
  • David S.

Very basic amenities - there's a roll of paper towels at each table - and really tremendous ribs. The original and vinegar sauces were especially good.

  • Yezid A.

Hands down the best BBQ I've had... Just make sure your really hungry because the portions are large and you definitely need to leave room for dessert

  • Zeke A.

We read other posts on Pappy's...we concur but the sides are generally satisfactory at best. The quality of the meat, as should be, is the selling point. We found both the pulled pork and ribs to be quite good but the brisket is the star. We are usually pork people reserving brisket for our trips to TX....try Pappy's!!!!!

This is one of those situations where Yelp so makes your day, if not your entire trip, that you have to yelp right out loud yourself (or pinch yourself). What made this daylong dalliance across backroads of northern South Carolina so complete, was to arrive here later in the afternoon. The place is spic and span. Everything is arranged nicely - - menus lined up on the counter, multiple sauces lined up on the counter (original, spicy, hot, vinegar, and then little bottles of traditional hot sauce and also one of pureed peppers - - super hot). But what shines is the dedication to great product - - to the art and enjoyment of bbq and all that accompanies it in the Carolinas. I got a mixed plate of chopped pork and brisket, with bbq slaw, and (fried) okra. The pork was distinctive and alluring - - a twinge of smoke, and a gameyness; the brisket was amazingly tender - - I am a fan of Texas bbq, and although this is not variegated in color like the marbled marvels such as at Smittys in Lockhart, the flavor, and the texture, were amazing. The bbq slaw was refreshing, and had unique character, and even the fried okra was great, though I slathered it in the pureed peppers. This place is Quality with a capital (bb) 'Q' - - just amazing- - and the people are genuine with a capital wow.

They have only been in business for 2 years but I predict they will be very successful. Family owned and truly down home cooking. The brisket was a tad bit dry but a customer sitting close by praised it to the high heavens for being moist. Things in life are often hit and miss. I must have missed on this occasion. The vegetables were awesome especially the green beans which are cooked all night in a crock pot. I will definitely return to this place when in the area.

a few weeks ago we were passing through spartanburg and wanted to stop for bbq. we googled nearby places and several restaurants came up. i chose pappy's old fashioned barbecue because i liked the name. an odd way to decide where to eat but it worked out in our favor. the food was awesome! my husband and i both ordered the chopped pork and brisket and we loved them--very moist and flavorful. i don't like to use the sauces because if it's good meat it doesn't need it. and it didn't need it. i did try the sauces though, i dip my hush puppies in them. both hush puppies and sauces were quite good. i got the fried okra and it might be the best i ever had. i tried my husband's coleslaw and i'm not really a coleslaw fan but i liked this slaw. everything was delicious and reasonably priced. also not too far off the freeway. if i find myself in spartanburg again i will be stopping for sure!

Love that Pappy's BBQ. I would recommend the chopped pork, hush puppies, jalepino grits, Mac & Cheese, and Fried Okra. They make everything from scratch, so you know it's good.

  • Brian R.

The brisket and baked beans are well worth the trip in itself and the jalapeño hush puppies were perfect. Definitely will make the stop again if in the Spartanburg area.

This is easily one of the best barbeque places I've eaten at. Good beef brisket is hard to find, but they seem to have a handle on it. The meat is tender and juicy, and the crusting on the outside is perfectly smoked. Their sauces are amazing and there is a different flavor to suit every taste. I've never had anything bad here, it's all good. You owe it to yourself to make sure you don't miss out on this place.

  • Mikko L.

Stopped in here during a road trip looking for some regional barbeque. Real down to earth and friendly with big servings of comfort food. Also has $5 plates for budget conscious folks. Brisket, mac and cheese, hush puppies, and fried okra are all outstanding. Girlfriend would have liked a little chunkier chop and more burnt pieces on the pork, and less mayo on the potato salad. Good rub on the ribs, also good. Sauces were flavorful, but had more sugar and less heat than what we're used to. Overall, definitely worth checking out if you can handle a mighty meal.

We are not from the area so I looked up on YELP for BBQ food. This seemed to have good reviews so we tried it. The place was horrible. Took a very long time for the food to come out and when it did everything was cold. My co-worker ribs were ice cold. My other co-worker fries were ice cold. Nothing tasted good. Still looking for a good BBQ place in Spartanburg.

  • Sarah G.

Excellent!!! Spartanburg has the best BBQ in the world and this place is a must-try. I had the pork plate with fries and okra. BEST FRIED OKRA I've ever tasted. Pork was great, tried it with the "hot" and "vin" sauces. Fantastic!!! The fries were surprisingly good as well. Can't say enough. :)

Great tender brisket, ribs and homemade pork rinds. This place is worth finding and very reasonable. Will be back

Pappy's was recommended by the front desk clerk at our hotel. It was a great local bbq joint. We enjoyed the ribs, chopped pork and pulled chicken. The selection of sauces is perfect to suit anyone's taste. The sides were amazing - jalapeno hushpuppies, fried okra, and potato salad. Just wish I had room left to try the banana pudding!

  • Kyle H.

It is great when the guy behind the counter is 100% honest with you. When I asked him what was especially good because I had never been there before he told me the brisket wasn't at its peak of freshness and it would be in about an hour when a new one came off the smoker. I ordered a rack of ribs with baked beans and Mac and Cheese. The ribs were very good and came right off the bone with a nice flavor. The Mac and Cheese was nothing special average at best in my opinion and the baked beans were good but nothing too special. The honesty is great and to me means they are looking out for their customers so I would recommend them for that and their ribs. The sides not so much.

Another little BBQ joint; not much to look at from the outside, but when you step out of your car, you can smell the smoke! Ordered pulled pork sandwich which came with a choice of one side. Bun was fresh; meat was tasty & tender and a choice of three or four sauces. One of us chose the fried okra, which was really tasty and the other chose the fries. The fries were homemade and had the potential to be wonderful - but they were terribly undercooked! Now, I don't mind my fries being a bit on the "light" side, but these were even too raw for my taste. We were in a hurry or we would have taken them back. The sweet tea was kind of disappointing too; tasted like it had been sitting for awhile and since this was mid afternoon on a Saturday, maybe it had been. But still the sandwich & the okra were good enough to give them another try.

  • Derek N.

Definitely a good little BBQ joint. I ordered the Brisket and two sides. I originally wanted Tater salad but sadly they were out.... I got mac n cheese and fries. The fries were ok, definitely could used to blanched before fully cooking. Not my favorite style of fries. The mac n cheese was good and wished I ordered two sides of this. For the price of the meal the portion was right but if the price was more the portion of brisket would have been to small. The sauces here are probably the best I have had in the area so far. Not to over the top vinegar but well balanced. The service was quick and the food came out hot.

The ribs. Perfectly smoked and juicy. The fried okra was also great. The pork and brisket were decent; good but not on the same level as the ribs.

I went last weekend and ordered meals for me and two others. I wanted to sample most items to gauge what tasted best so here's what we got: ribs (delicious and flavorful), brisket (tough and dry), pulled pork (dry but flavorful), jalapeño hush puppies (pretty darn good), BBQ Cole slaw (crunchy and a little too tangy), green beans (weren't from a can and tasted good), jalapeño cheese grits & fried okra (awesome), potato salad (good) and the Mac n cheese (ok). There were a lot of items that really made this place memorable so I'll go back whenever in the area to try more.

A no nonsense bbq joint that serves up good food. I was here last year while visiting but don't recall it being this good. Pork and brisket are super tender, fresh fried hush puppies and good sauces make it worth 5 stars. I'll over look the decor! Lol

All these BBQ places around the upstate are pretty much the same. This is not a bad thing. If anything this area does well it's BBQ. You can't go wrong with any of these restaurants. You really have to go out of your way to find a bad one. I've noticed that the employees and owners of these places have an attitude of "Try this, I know you'll be impressed." Usually I am. There is a sense of pride with these BBQ restaurants that you don't get with any other locally owned restaurant and I can respect that.

We were traveling thru the area and went to Pappy's for dinner. Won't do that again. There was no one else in the place at about 6:00 p.m. - should be indication. I had the brisket sandwich and had to send it back since the brisket had been sliced with the grain and it was impossible to chew. However, instead of bringing me a new sandwich the gentleman brought me some properly sliced meat on a plate - make my own sandwich? My husband had the sausage and you could not convince us it was not Hillshire Farms. The hush puppies were not bad but were obviously pre-made food service hush puppies. Husband said the mac and cheese was pretty good.

Traveling through the area and found this place by searching for BBQ with good reviews. It lives up to the good reviews! Very fast and friendly service, pulled pork sandwiches were great. A la carte menu was great too, Jalapeño hush puppies and Mac n cheese were an unexpected plus!

Fantastic Everything. Make sure you get the peppermints from the wooden box! It's life changing.

Good meal enjoyed on a beautiful day on picknic tables outside at sunset. Pappy's was out of the brisket which was a bummer, and the chicken I replaced in my combo plate was unimpressive. Ribs and fried okra were good, hot sauce and jalapeño hush puppies were fantastic.

You may want to drive away when you see Pappy's. Resist the urge. Go in and order brisket, ribs or jalapeno hush puppies. It is amazing and cheap. You won't regret it.

Very basic amenities - there's a roll of paper towels at each table - and really tremendous ribs. The original and vinegar sauces were especially good.

a few weeks ago we were passing through spartanburg and wanted to stop for bbq. we googled nearby places and several restaurants came up. i chose pappy's old fashioned barbecue because i liked the name. an odd way to decide where to eat but it worked out in our favor. the food was awesome! my husband and i both ordered the chopped pork and brisket and we loved them--very moist and flavorful. i don't like to use the sauces because if it's good meat it doesn't need it. and it didn't need it. i did try the sauces though, i dip my hush puppies in them. both hush puppies and sauces were quite good. i got the fried okra and it might be the best i ever had. i tried my husband's coleslaw and i'm not really a coleslaw fan but i liked this slaw. everything was delicious and reasonably priced. also not too far off the freeway. if i find myself in spartanburg again i will be stopping for sure!

Love that Pappy's BBQ. I would recommend the chopped pork, hush puppies, jalepino grits, Mac & Cheese, and Fried Okra. They make everything from scratch, so you know it's good.

Absolutely wonderful and delicious food. If you love BBQ this is a great place to go. I love the feel of the place.. The prices are really decent and they give you a decent size amount of food to eat. If you love good food this place is one to check out.. I have never been disappointed by them.

Get familiar with the menu before you order. I missed out on some unique sides like the jalapeno cheese grits, and the fresh cut french fries. Make sure you leave room for the made-from-scratch cakes.

The pork could've had a more smoky flavor without having to add the sauce other than that the sides were good the jalapeno hush puppies were very good the french fries are very good not the best barbecue ive had in South Carolina though it ranks up there. Glad they did not have any mustard sauce
