We were staying at the Marriott a short block away and found this place close enough to walk. Love this place, short order paradise. This is probably the place where Paula Dean learned to cook. You will love this place or leave at the first sight of the grill. Open 24 7 this place piles it high and sells it cheap. Second visit we ordered the pecan pancakes and an omlet. Delicious. Comes with grits and toast or what ever you want. You can get a ribeye steak on the side for $5.50. Large menu with lots of choices all short orders. Highly recommended for just good eats.

Excellent place to go with friends after a late night out. You meet very "interesting" people there. Always get the trash can omelet which is delicious. Wouldn't go on a normal day though. Also they don't take credit cards, cash only!

Go for the show, not the food. This is where short order cooks & waitress go to die. Don't get me wrong. The food IS NOT BAD. BUT, it's not great either. It's just what you would expect from a greasy spoon that's open 24/7. Consistently average. Think Waffle House but WAY BETTET!! Our waitress was a total sweetheart. After today I am now fond of being called "honey". She was busting her ass & still checked on us whenever she passed by. Now we did sit @ the counter & that's where the action/ show is. It's like a well oiled machine cranking out average breaky food. Not for the squeamish. Yes it's loud, yes the waitstaff is in a hurry. But hell, when your cranking out this kinda volume you can't afford to lolly gag. Will I be back ? Only if the skillet is closed. & I want to watch the show.

This unassuming downtown restaurant has been a Spartanburg standard for many years. I'm amazed how few times I ate there when I lived in town but love my visits there now that I have moved away. They have the full menu of breakfast standards with some truly delicious omelets that can be made with anything and everything (Trashcan Omelet) you can imagine. Friendly staff serve generous portions hot and fast. The only part that could be improved upon is the coffee. There are too many specialty shops and high quality beans are out there to continue to serve bitter generic coffee. I'll be back having tea with my breakfast!

The food is always good but the wait time to eat is ridiculous. I have never had a pleasant waitress and been over 5 times.. They seem a bit rude and nobody acts like they don't enjoy or want to work and you are a burden for coming in. If the staff was better i would of given more stars..

Surprised by neg comments!! Stopped by on way to visit Wofford. All 4 of us had a great breakfast (great value for $)! Food and service were excellent...and the place was very clean (even the bathroom). Place very busy. Staff was very friendly. Only negative was thinking of tuition at Wofford. Definitely will return.

Good French toast and scrambled eggs. Tried liver for the first time here- personally not a fan, but I'm thinking that's more of the livers fault and not the restaurant. Staff was prompt and pleasant. Food reasonable priced for a 24hr diner - serves breakfast 24hrs too!!

I first started coming here years ago and it was pretty good for breakfast but over the past two years, it has become one of the last places that I would ever want to go to eat. Last year, I went with my mom to grab a quick breakfast and I ordered an omelet. It was completely raw in the center. When I said something, the cook tried to tell me that it was because of the cheese in the omelet. Ok...Whatever. When she gave it back to me, it still wasn't done. I told her to keep it that time and I just drank my watered down tea and we left shortly after that. The last time I went with my husband was the middle part of last year and the same cook was there and I ordered the same omelet to see what would happen and this time, when I cut into the omelet, there was a bread tie cooked into it! The waitress tried to get the cook to look at it and she wouldn't, she was too busy on the phone and when she finally did look at it, I know she asked that waitress at least five time what it was. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I started talking to my husband and heard the cook screaming, "Hey girl! Girl! Girl! Hey Girl!!" I knew she was trying to get my attention, but I ignored her. When I finally did turn around to answer her, she said, "Want some cake or something?" I said no and we left. I made sure to get a picture of the bread tie just in case. Haven't been back but I may think about it if they ever get different cook back there.

My husband and I were in Spartanburg for the day and happened upon Papa's. i had the "Trash Can" omellete, he had a waffle. Everything was delicious, the service was wonderful and the atmosphere was very old-school diner-like, which was fun. Will definitely return.

Many of the best places with the best foods are what Americans love to call "hole in the wall" diners. Sure you can got to a five star restaurant but those feel like eating in a chic flic or either a library. You ask me I look for that home feeling when I refuel and that is where this little "hole in the wall" comes in perfect. Back home locals are extremely friendly and makes all customers whether New comers or Regulars feel like a priority. Five stars just isn't enough but that's all I got.

This use to be an awesome place. Unfortunately all good things come to an end. The last couple times I went they have been way under staffed. Didn't have to wait for a seat, but always over a 20 minute plus wait on food and don't expect to get a drink refill in that time! Last visit was late May 29 around 11pm and we ended up leaving after 40 minutes and never receiving our orders. Our waitress was so rude. She only took half of our orders before rushing off and when we flagged her down to finish our order it clearly pissed her off. When we inquired about our food, after 30 minutes, she explained she didn't know BC it was only her second day. We couldn't get her to bring us refills, a high chair or a smile, but she did bring us a lot of attitude and loud hateful remarks. My friends at another table had no luck with their waitress either. Its sad that this is what this restaurant has become. It use to be so pleasant and the food was so good. The menu prices have increased while the service and quality has gone to hell. I have been going there for over half my life and its sad to see its decline. The last visit was probably just that for me.

I used to go here when it was called "Papa Sam's." I like breakfast there the best obviously. I used to go there late at night, too, when I was a student at Wofford. Yum. (You need a t-shirt - they are cool.)

Took my mom here for a late lunch after a movie. She had the vegetable wrap, liked it OK but thought it would have been better grilled instead of just heated. I had the pecan pancakes which were 3 large pancaked will lots of pecans inside. Big enough to take half home to my beloved! Service was good and the hours are GREAT!

The best thing about Papa's is their hours. They are open 24 hours a day. The food is good, especially any of the breakfast selections and their famous 'Spartan Burger.' They have good sweet tea, and the coffee gets made several times a shift. The only negative thing I can say about them is sometimes you get the absolute worst service on the planet. I actually left a quarter one time for a gal that left our food sitting to get cold while she was exercising her jaw muscles. An inconvenient thing is they don't accept cards, but they do have an ATM inside. So best to have some cash in hand and be ready for a little bit of waiting. But it makes for a great place to sit, talk, and people watch, even in the small hours.

We both ordered Spartanburgers with home fries. The restaurant was somewhat busy, but not slammed. (no wait, about half of the seats empty) Our visit was not particularly pleasant. The good- Our waitress was friendly. The bad- Our table, the napkin dispenser, and the condiment containers were dirty. The restroom...sure wish I could unsmell it. The lady who took our payment at the counter did not look up, much less smile, and sounded as if our need to give her money was annoying. The home fries were quite greasy and the burgers had little flavor. Perhaps Papa's does breakfast well? If not, I really don't understand the positive reviews.

Locals love it, so we stopped in for breakfast. It was busy when we walked in and we asked for a booth. Instead of telling us to grab a seat, the older server behind the counter told us to read the sign. The sign informed us to find our own seat. Now telling a newcomer to sit wherever they like and grumpily telling a newcomer to read a sign can be done in the same amount of time and they make a big difference on a first impression. So we started on the wrong foot and stayed there for the remainder of our visit. The coffee was very good, I'll give them that. When we ordered, I got a stack (3) of buttermilk pancakes ($5) and Scott got a cheese omelete. I also ordered a side of sausage which amounted to two (2) links on a side plate. What the hell is that? Their portions are WAY off. The pancakes were passable and our bill somehow came to $20 even though each of our orders were around $5 each on the menu. Perhaps they don't offer free refills on their coffee, because otherwise we got robbed. This is the first time I've been to Spartanburg in 15 years. This is the last time I'll go to 'The Nook'. If you're an out of towner you should definitely stop in if you want to get robbed and treated like crap. Otherwise I would avoid them like the plague.

So we started on the wrong foot and stayed there for the remainder of our visit. The coffee was very good, I'll give them that. When we ordered, I got a stack (3) of buttermilk pancakes ($5) and Scott got a cheese omelete. I also ordered a side of sausage which amounted to two (2) links on a side plate. What the hell is that? Their portions are WAY off. The pancakes were passable and our bill somehow came to $20 even though each of our orders were around $5 each on the menu. Perhaps they don't offer free refills on their coffee, because otherwise we got robbed. This is the first time I've been to Spartanburg in 15 years. This is the last time I'll go to 'The Nook'. If you're an out of towner you should definitely stop in if you want to get robbed and treated like crap. Otherwise I would avoid them like the plague.

Go for the show, not the food. This is where short order cooks & waitress go to die. Don't get me wrong. The food IS NOT BAD. BUT, it's not great either. It's just what you would expect from a greasy spoon that's open 24/7. Consistently average. Think Waffle House but WAY BETTET!! Our waitress was a total sweetheart. After today I am now fond of being called "honey". She was busting her ass & still checked on us whenever she passed by. Now we did sit @ the counter & that's where the action/ show is. It's like a well oiled machine cranking out average breaky food. Not for the squeamish. Yes it's loud, yes the waitstaff is in a hurry. But hell, when your cranking out this kinda volume you can't afford to lolly gag. Will I be back ? Only if the skillet is closed. & I want to watch the show.

We were staying at the Marriott a short block away and found this place close enough to walk. Love this place, short order paradise. This is probably the place where Paula Dean learned to cook. You will love this place or leave at the first sight of the grill. Open 24 7 this place piles it high and sells it cheap. Second visit we ordered the pecan pancakes and an omlet. Delicious. Comes with grits and toast or what ever you want. You can get a ribeye steak on the side for $5.50. Large menu with lots of choices all short orders. Highly recommended for just good eats.

This unassuming downtown restaurant has been a Spartanburg standard for many years. I'm amazed how few times I ate there when I lived in town but love my visits there now that I have moved away. They have the full menu of breakfast standards with some truly delicious omelets that can be made with anything and everything (Trashcan Omelet) you can imagine. Friendly staff serve generous portions hot and fast. The only part that could be improved upon is the coffee. There are too many specialty shops and high quality beans are out there to continue to serve bitter generic coffee. I'll be back having tea with my breakfast!

Many of the best places with the best foods are what Americans love to call "hole in the wall" diners. Sure you can got to a five star restaurant but those feel like eating in a chic flic or either a library. You ask me I look for that home feeling when I refuel and that is where this little "hole in the wall" comes in perfect. Back home locals are extremely friendly and makes all customers whether New comers or Regulars feel like a priority. Five stars just isn't enough but that's all I got.

Well it's definitely an experience! Loud staff yelling at each other, scatterbrain waitress talking to herself a lot, below average food but gave two stars for a certain southern charm it still has amidst it all.

This use to be an awesome place. Unfortunately all good things come to an end. The last couple times I went they have been way under staffed. Didn't have to wait for a seat, but always over a 20 minute plus wait on food and don't expect to get a drink refill in that time! Last visit was late May 29 around 11pm and we ended up leaving after 40 minutes and never receiving our orders. Our waitress was so rude. She only took half of our orders before rushing off and when we flagged her down to finish our order it clearly pissed her off. When we inquired about our food, after 30 minutes, she explained she didn't know BC it was only her second day. We couldn't get her to bring us refills, a high chair or a smile, but she did bring us a lot of attitude and loud hateful remarks. My friends at another table had no luck with their waitress either. Its sad that this is what this restaurant has become. It use to be so pleasant and the food was so good. The menu prices have increased while the service and quality has gone to hell. I have been going there for over half my life and its sad to see its decline. The last visit was probably just that for me.

Allways come to papas been coming for years the food is consistantly good. waitresses are friendly food is allways hot. i usually come evenings or late nite. love the various choices of smuckers jam. tea is good sweet like i like it staff allways greet you upon entering will come back

Excellent place to go with friends after a late night out. You meet very "interesting" people there. Always get the trash can omelet which is delicious. Wouldn't go on a normal day though. Also they don't take credit cards, cash only!

The food is always good but the wait time to eat is ridiculous. I have never had a pleasant waitress and been over 5 times.. They seem a bit rude and nobody acts like they don't enjoy or want to work and you are a burden for coming in. If the staff was better i would of given more stars..

Surprised by neg comments!! Stopped by on way to visit Wofford. All 4 of us had a great breakfast (great value for $)! Food and service were excellent...and the place was very clean (even the bathroom). Place very busy. Staff was very friendly. Only negative was thinking of tuition at Wofford. Definitely will return.

Gotta get my Spartanburger fix! Yum, with home fries!!!! However, the cook was waaay slow, and I had to wait 25 min for my food. I've never had slow service, so I hope my next visit moves a little quicker.

Good French toast and scrambled eggs. Tried liver for the first time here- personally not a fan, but I'm thinking that's more of the livers fault and not the restaurant. Staff was prompt and pleasant. Food reasonable priced for a 24hr diner - serves breakfast 24hrs too!!

I first started coming here years ago and it was pretty good for breakfast but over the past two years, it has become one of the last places that I would ever want to go to eat. Last year, I went with my mom to grab a quick breakfast and I ordered an omelet. It was completely raw in the center. When I said something, the cook tried to tell me that it was because of the cheese in the omelet. Ok...Whatever. When she gave it back to me, it still wasn't done. I told her to keep it that time and I just drank my watered down tea and we left shortly after that. The last time I went with my husband was the middle part of last year and the same cook was there and I ordered the same omelet to see what would happen and this time, when I cut into the omelet, there was a bread tie cooked into it! The waitress tried to get the cook to look at it and she wouldn't, she was too busy on the phone and when she finally did look at it, I know she asked that waitress at least five time what it was. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I started talking to my husband and heard the cook screaming, "Hey girl! Girl! Girl! Hey Girl!!" I knew she was trying to get my attention, but I ignored her. When I finally did turn around to answer her, she said, "Want some cake or something?" I said no and we left. I made sure to get a picture of the bread tie just in case. Haven't been back but I may think about it if they ever get different cook back there.

My husband and I were in Spartanburg for the day and happened upon Papa's. i had the "Trash Can" omellete, he had a waffle. Everything was delicious, the service was wonderful and the atmosphere was very old-school diner-like, which was fun. Will definitely return.

I used to go here when it was called "Papa Sam's." I like breakfast there the best obviously. I used to go there late at night, too, when I was a student at Wofford. Yum. (You need a t-shirt - they are cool.)

Took my mom here for a late lunch after a movie. She had the vegetable wrap, liked it OK but thought it would have been better grilled instead of just heated. I had the pecan pancakes which were 3 large pancaked will lots of pecans inside. Big enough to take half home to my beloved! Service was good and the hours are GREAT!

The best thing about Papa's is their hours. They are open 24 hours a day. The food is good, especially any of the breakfast selections and their famous 'Spartan Burger.' They have good sweet tea, and the coffee gets made several times a shift. The only negative thing I can say about them is sometimes you get the absolute worst service on the planet. I actually left a quarter one time for a gal that left our food sitting to get cold while she was exercising her jaw muscles. An inconvenient thing is they don't accept cards, but they do have an ATM inside. So best to have some cash in hand and be ready for a little bit of waiting. But it makes for a great place to sit, talk, and people watch, even in the small hours.
