A hole in the wall. I and my female friend love to explore new places like this one. Small, out of the way places like this are where you get to meet the people in the community. Places like this serve up food that Mexicans themselves will eat, not that garbage they sell to the white locals. Since the authentic taquerÃa we loved so much in Taylors closed, we have had to look for a new one. I figure if no one speaks English, then we're on the right track. Dos Portillos is a nice little mom & pop establishment that serves up authentic--as far as I can tell--Mexican cuisine. They have daily specials that are all of $6, and they have what always interests me the most--tacos al pastor and tacos de carne asada. The tacos are made from real corn (masa harina), not flour. Their version of pico de gallo is a litlte different, without cilantro, and their salsas to dip the corn chips in was pretty damn hot. My nose was running. You can get cactus (nopales) here, and they probably serve lengua and sesos here, too. Our waitress was a sweet young lady who did speak English after all, and she checked up on us several times. There was a TV going, but it wasn't blaring as they sometimes are in these places. It was quiet and nice. There was a cooler in the back that has Mexican drinks and I saw cokes, but I can't swear that they are the Mexican Cokes made only with sugar and not high fructose corn syrup--it DOES make a difference in taste. We ate 4 tacos, a burrito, a side of cilantro and pico de gallo for a little over $13.
