Iama Critic Rating - Gus Streetside Cafe - 4 Stars 2703 Anderson Rd, Greenville, SC Overall: Gus's has two things going for it. There is always an open seat and their prices are very respectable, which is why some of their 3 star dishes earned 4 stars, because of exceptional value! But if you are looking for flavorful spicy dishes, you really better plan on bringing in some of your own spices. It doesn't take long before you realize that Gus's average clientele is rather "aged", and as such Gus's food seems to follow the "no spices please" call of its patrons. So I really can't fault Gus's for cooking for its audience. Gus's also has some very good home made desert, which unfortunately, I and most of my critic friends can't eat! Side Salad - 3 Stars I received three of these side salad with my three entrees. The salads were rather small and ordinary, although you do get crackers and decent dressing. But please Gus, get rid of the awful pepper dust and buy some real course ground pepper! $7.99 Broiled Tilapia - 3 Stars Which I ordered with hush puppies and broccoli. My picture for this entree was rather poor and from a prior visit, but it is rather appropriate as the entree was rather washed out and flavorless despite all the pepper on the fish. Also this is a rather poor presentation of broken fish pieces, not whole fillets. The broccoli and crunchy bread were perfectly cooked but again, no spices at all. Which is great if you are 80 and order everything plain, but I actually like spices. $5.85 Grilled Reuben - 4 Stars Now I do not particularly like corn beef or sauerkraut, so I often order a Reuben. Which I realize doesn't make much sense. But I figure if a restaurant can make something I don't like, tastes good, then they have really accomplished something. And this perfectly cooked sandwich, with the accompanying vegetable soup, does just that at a decent price. $6.99 Lasagna - 4 Stars This lasagna came with a side salad, and was very good, better than most, but what makes this lasagna stand apart is the value! $6.99 for this level of flavorful lasagna is simply outstanding. $8.99 Fried Flounder - 4 Stars Which I ordered with hush puppies, a lump of dressing with brown gravy and a very nice baked potato. Again Gus doesn't offer much frills or very many spices but this flounder was fabulous. We also found the dressing to be moist and yummy, but the gravy was canned or powdered. The potato was frill-less with only sour cream and butter, and Gus's table pepper is horrid, what we call pepper dust. But the potato was still light and soft. But again this entree gains a star for being a great value as you get a side salad with this entree.
