We placed a take out order because we have 2 small children. The locals provided friendly hospitality & awesome dinner suggestions. The homemade drop biscuits with the pineapple butter were a treat. This place was a wonderful dining experience! The lamb meatloaf, tuna tartar, calamari & apple salad were great.

Food = 4 (nice creative offering) Price = 4 Experience = 4 (well designed interior with a comfortable bar/casual dining area, the bartender was very helpful and attentive.) Pickled shrimp (very nice... I loved it) Carpaccio Tuna Tartar

Food was excellent but for the price it was definitely not worth it. Left hungry and had an appetizer and an entrée. Won't be returning

Very casual atmosphere, although white table cloths, with live music. The food, one entree of diver scallops with sweet corn risotto and haricot verts, and one of fried chicken breasts (2 boneless breasts) with buttermilk mashed potatoes and haricot verts, was excellent! Dessert of pecan tart with bourbon ice cream and caramel also delicious. Very nice wine list and fairly priced cocktails. Live music was excellent but a bit loud in the main dining room. I found it nice but see where others wanting a more intimate dining experience could be bothered. Overall a wonderful dining experience with excellent service provided by Diane. Definitely recommend Breakwater. Many options for tapas and entrees. Thank you!

My parents ate here the day before we got to Beaufort. We wanted to eat here also. Upon the restaurants recommendations to my parents we took our family, with children, on Friday, not Thursday due to large parties. We arrived shortly after they opened, also their recommendation. They offered us a high top table, which would not work due to we have a 6 month old, 4,and 7 year old boys. They took us to the table, then walked away. We stood around contemplating if the table would work. The mgr came out and could see that this was an issue, we also told her that the table would not work because of the kids. She said sorry, would not allow us another table, and watched us walk out the door. I believe there were 2 other seated tables at the time of our arrival. I would like to add, that we tried to use the link on their website to set a reservation, but said they were offline. I called 1-1.5 hrs before they opened 2 times, and just after they opened as well, trying to make a reservation, each time I went to voicemail, asking to leave info, and they will call back-not any way to make a reservation. Our children are very behaved, and have eaten at much nicer restaurants than this, such as Bones-in Atlanta, on a few occasions, and were actually complimented on their behavior.

Enjoyable. Very good food and a very polite staff. Parking was also convenient. A little loud but not enought to be a problem. I would certainly return the next time I am in town.

Food adequate in portion size. Some innovation. The pickled fried Brussel sprouts were fun. Blackened mahi mahi was bland. When the waitress asked for feedback an item by item assessment was given. No complaints just feedback. Then there was no response. I live here and will return when someone else is paying.

Meal was 4 stars, ambience was 2-3 stars (modern in a cold and non-cozy way). What I can recommend (which was everything we ordered): - stuffed mushrooms. I should have ordered 3 of these and made it my meal ;) - scallops...I went with the tapas size (2 large scallops). Entree size is 3-4 (by weight) - fried chicken. Though perhaps a little heavy on the breeding-to-chicken ratio, extremely delicious.

Breakwater is a more classic option for dining in Beaufort. This is a great spot for couples to be able to talk and enjoy the evening. Food is well prepared and there are specials nightly. My wife and I dined here on one evening while in Beaufort based on Yelp reviews. To start we ordered a salad and ribs that were super tender. Great asian flavor. My wife ordered the scallops for her entree which came out perfectly seared on top of a corn risotto with a hint of mint. Creative and very flavorful. I ordered a burger that was half kobe beef and half mushrooms. A "better" burger of sorts. The chef was experimenting with this combination. It was very good, surprisingly juicy. It needed salt however. The ambiance is contemporary and relaxing. Not much noise as the bar is separate from the dining room. Service was a little slow and not too attentive. I find this to be a problem in smaller towns. We had to ask for service a few times and they were not that busy. The quality of the food made up for the service issues. All in all I thought that Breakwater did a nice job, I would probably go for 3.5 stars but I am rounding up to 4 stars.

We ate here for the first time the week after Christmas. I give Breakwater 4 stars because I am definitely a fan and very much enjoyed my dinner, but I will say the service was not up to the par I expected. First things first, call for a reservation. We went on a Tuesday night and saw people turned away from the dining room because they were booked. There is a bar area where you can get full service. Also, a wine room that can be rented out for private parties. The dining room, bar, and wine room are not that large, but just enough to serve this bustling restaurant. Our dinner was great! Stuffed mushrooms and calamari as appetizers. The calamari was delicately fried and not too chewy, the mushrooms were overflowing with a delicious bacon-y stuffing. I would have like to seen more than three mushrooms on the plate though. Even one more would have made this app more shareable. The seasonal salad was delicious with a house made vinagrette and a goat cheese fritter. We had a variety of entrees over the table and each was to die for. The NY Strip with mushroom and baked tomatoes, veal meatloaf (OMG!!!), and the pasta special. I had the Blackened Mahi which was AH-mazing, but I did sub the cheesy grits instead of the mashed potatoes. Do the same! It's a much better pairing. Desserts: do it!! Chocolate molten cake, pecan tart, Salted Caramel Apple Bread Pudding. Whoa! The one place we felt our dinner lacked was the service. We didn't get a lot of attention from our server. She rarely came to our table and when she did she butted right into our conversations. My water was empty through most of the dinner. And she never came back to check on us after dropping food. Just not the type of service I would expect from one of the few fine dining restaurants in Beaufort. (Maybe I'm spoiled by the Charleston foodie scene.)

The ambiance, food, and service is always top notch. Call for a reservation because this place can get busy! The bar area is awperate from the dining area, which is nice. The bar has a few tables and a really nice lounge area. The menu is great and has seasonal items as well. The pimento cheese and salads are amazing. The fresh catch and lamb meat loaf are sensational for dinner. Anything you get will be great. They also have an extensive wine list!

It was a pleasure to see such happy faces, attentive bar staff...however past that I can't say I would return except for a drink, and that may be a stretch. The food was sub par, there are...cooks-ish people, management cook-ish like people.... I never want to not like to give any neighbor a derogatory review . Hopefully this experience changes, another chance....

The staff was very friendly. I requested for vegetarian and they made delicious stuffed pepper. Their French fries are also very fresh and tasty. My husband has the Lamb Meatloaf and really enjoyed it . I would definitely recommend this place

We went here for dinner while vacationing in Beaufort. We sat at the bar and had a couple of drinks before our 8PM dinner reservation - reservations available on OpenTable. The place lost a star for 2 reasons: the first being the bartender did not have much knowledge on the beers or wine he was serving, the second being during dinner our waitress was MIA most of the meal. We had the hostess ask us if we were okay/fill up our water more than our actual waitress. If this place really wants to step it up, they need to hire more waitresses - could most likely get people in and out quicker as well and not have to turn people away. For our meal we had the southern sampler for app, pork chops and mahi mahi for entrees. Everything was amazing and brought out quickly. We would definitely come here again, but will be expecting the lengthy dining time.

Breakwater is located very conveniently to downtown Beaufort and is delightfully modern given the surroundings. The decor is really hip and the staff is a small group of polished professionals. Tapas selections are extensive and expertly prepared, we made an evening just out of these one time. The entrees are also great and made with top-notch ingredients. Wine selection is pretty extensive and everything is fairly priced for the level of quality you receive. You can hang out at the bar for happy hour with a couple friends or stay for a full dinner at any of the tables or even in the 'wine locker.' This is probably the best restaurant in Beaufort if you are looking for something modern and food-centric.

First, please allow me to explain the rating above is based on the food and/or food preparation. Service was outstanding by all we contacted. While visiting from California I was seeking out the best southern places to eat. After being told by several people this restaurant and Dockside were two must do's while in the area. Having eaten at Dockside a couple days earlier (had a great meal there); we decided to give Breakwater a try. Entered on a Tuesday evening about 6-7 PM, decided on a table in the bar area. The bartender was very attentive to our needs and taking out orders. We order a couple draft beers and they quickly arrived in a frosted chilled glasses, the beer was ice cold and good flavor. He proceeded to take our food orders, we both ordered the hamburgers and she order some shrimp. After he left, I added on some fried clams to my order. The shrimp arrived and were good. The clams arrived very shortly afterwards...a bit too soon to have the cook timing correct. I tried a couple of the clams and there were raw on the inside...about turned my stomach! My friend tried them and agreed...raw on the inside. Had to return them, he very politely took them back. We ordered a second beer while waiting for the burgers; it arrived quickly and just as cold and tasty. Our burgers arrived. The buns were way overdone...actually burnt and crunchy. My burger was pretty rare and hers was overcooked. Neither tasted right, had a funny taste to them, we just weren't pleased. We spoke to the bartender about our concerns, he happened to be the bar manager. He also went and got the restaurant manager to speak with us about it. They both agreed the burgers were not up to their standards, were very apologetic and offered to get us something else. We declined and finished our beer. I must say, they were outstanding on their service and willingness to please us. They picked up the entire check. We wanted to pay for the beers and shrimp...but they insisted it was their fault and wanted to make it right. They certainly achieved their goal...we were surprised by this and felt it was very kind of them. If I lived in the area, I would definitely give them another chance.

This is a four star restaurant for almost every reason. I would have liked to have given it a five, but in every category it missed by a tiny amount. Service. The server was very good. I had ordered flowers in advance, and when we arrived the table was beautifully set up with the flowers. The server was attentive, kind, mostly unobtrusive and almost everything, but . . . . (If you are under 65 you will not understand this.) My wife and I were there to celebrate her 70 something birthday. We are not young, but neither are we mentally infirm, and some well meaning people talk to the elderly in a cloying saccharine voice usually reserved for babies in diapers. Our server used that voice with us all evening. She sounded like people who gush when they see a picture of a newborn. Listen for the "Aaahh." The voice cost a star. But she was a good server. Her tip didn't suffer. The meal. The food was over the top great. My not drooling not senile wife was thrilled with the lamb chops. The complementary goat cheese fritter was incredible. The meat for my filet was as good as I have had in many years and it was cooked perfectly. But here is the rub. I believe that sauces and glazes, and the like, should complement and enhance the flavor of the meat and not mask or cover it up. The Gorgonzola was a wonderful topping, but the caramelized onions were too strong and suffocated that poor piece of meat. When I scraped off the onions, it was wonderful. The desserts were excellent. When they brought my wife's creme brulee, it had a candle marking her birthday. It was a great dining experience, but not five star. Price. I have a problem here. I have tried to figure out what the $$ signs on Yelp represent and can't find the key. Breakwater is listed as a $$ restaurant. For our meal, the price, without tip was $94. I thought it a very reasonable price for a glass of Macallan, a complementary glass of champagne, wonderfully prepared food consisting of the aforementioned fritters, rack of lamb, filet and two desserts. But when the price approaches $100 without a bottle of wine, I don't consider it $$. Breakwater is a wonderful restaurant, but $$ it ain't. I will recommend Breakwater to all my friends; it is nice to be babied.

Despite not being able to get a reservation till 8:30, I still really wanted to try Breakwater. The great reviews and buzz (and hell, anything new to Beaufort is a good thing) plus the delicious-looking menu made me think I was in for a treat. We were seated promptly at our reservation time and despite the very small restaurant not being especially full, service was slow, slow, slow. It took forever for us to get our wine choices and we only heard about the Catch of the Day after asking if there were any specials. We weren't told anything about the seasonal salad selection until we actually ordered and were informed they were out of it. I was a little disappointed by the lack of seafood on the menu. I know a lot of other spots in town cover that market, but still, this is a coastal town and it really is what's best. I settled for a smorgasbord: apple and warm brie, the trio of grits, and beef carpaccio. If I had to sum it all up: good, but nothing special... certainly not craveworthy. I was especially saddened by the grits. I LOOOOVE grits and I figured with three different flavors I would really love at least one. Sadly, not the case: they were all pretty bland. My family all seemed quite pleased with their entrees so maybe I ordered wrong... but given that tapas were half the menu I feel like they should do them well. For dessert I got a molten chocolate cake (they were out of the pecan tarte I had first ordered.. and this was on recommendation of the server) and while you can't really screw up a chocolate cake with ice cream, this reminded me of those really cheap (and kinda gross) add water and microwave Betty Crocker deals. Sad. We loved the tabby tile floors and the decor was nice, except I'll admit that the atmosphere was a bit odd given the static-y Pearl Jam I heard playing from the kitchen. Our server was kind of gruff and at one point forgot about a beer I had ordered. She poured wine before it had been tasted and just overall didn't have the finesse you'd expect at a place like this. All in all, Breakwater is solid but I wouldn't be rushing here any time soon. The bar area looked great and I have a feeling that's how I will be checking it out in the future.

Breakwater's success seems to be making them careless. A visit last weekend brought us a pleasant but ill trained server who could not get the orders right. Mistake after mistake. Kitchen was slow. Nearly a half hour for a few simple tapas style dishes, which were ok but not outstanding. My Americano cocktail was so poorly made (watery, flat) that I returned it. After more than 10 minutes the replacement was no better. No one greeted us on arrival or (except for the nice but overmatched waitress) thanked us as we departed. Downgraded to two stars.

This is a favorite place to stop and have dinner when I'm in town. I love the scallop and risotto dish. My mother wants to come on out of town trips just because she loves this restaurant so much!! Consistent with great, friendly service, and nice modern ambiance.

Very modern atmosphere with a terrific wine list. I was very excited about dinner here ,but unfortunately, the meal was spotty--the salad was good (although the beets seemed like they could be from a can), the scallops were amazing (order them!), but the mussels were...well...terrible. They had a weird texture and the broth was far too salty. I love mussels, but these were just awful.

Best food I have ever eaten in Beaufort! My wife and I at here for our fifth anniversary/ pre-Valentine's day dinner. We shared the Lowcountry Chowder which was wonderful with just a hint of similarity to the local favorite, Frogmore Stew. She had the Drunken Duck cooked medium rare. I had the Blackened Mahi, served over buttermilk mashed potatoes and spinach. The fresh Carolinian Mahi was right on par with that of other favorite local restaurants. The mashed potatoes are some of the best that I have ever eaten, creamy and buttery with just enough lumps to let you know that they are made from scratch. The wine selection is most impressive, especially for such a small South Carolinian town, rivaling most of the Charleston restaurants we've frequented. The desserts are worth the wait, as well. The pecan pie was once again one of the finest I have ever tasted.

Seated promptly at 8:00 per our reservation and enjoyed a frosty beverage while taking in the "hip decor" and surveying the many choices on their menu. Went with the low country rice & shellfish entree which turned out to be very good. Shared bites with my better half. As soon as the first fork of swordfish "fresh catch of the day" hit my mouth, I knew there would be a 5th star for Breakwater. The fish was grilled to perfection and had a marvelous flavor. It exceeded our expectations for sure. Beet salad was excellent and a side of wilted spinach was spot on. Juliet, our server was timely, efficient and pleasant. Nice treat to find such a great place to eat in Beaufort, SC.
