I was going here everyday for a while at the end of last summer. EVERY SINGLE DAY! The grilled cheese sandwiches are amazing. Fresh ingredients and balanced flavors. Yummy. These aren't your 3rd grade grilled cheese sandwiches! The staff is always super friendly too. They are calm and laid back. Pretty much exactly like you would expect a grilled cheese joint's staff to be. My faves are the Wicked, Tomato Basil, and The Veggie. The soup is more like a thick sauce but its tasty. Just have to thin it out a bit or just scoop it up with your sandwich. The giant chocolate chip cookies are yummy too. They sit and the counter and taunt you. Don't look if you have a weak will. Good food. Good Service. Good place

UMelt it is YUM! I've seen so many places try to make it in this space and I'm definitely crossing my fingers for UMelt. First and foremost, the service is great. The people working behind the counter are knowledgeable, passionate and wicked helpful when it comes to the menu. Here's what Ryan D. and I decided to order: BBQ and Pulled Pork and Veggie One of the biggest surprises about this place is that the ingredients are fresh and super local. (Yay locals!) While it's obvious that the pulled pork will be delicious, the veggie was a big surprise. Our cashier recommended adding their house-pickled jalapenos and it made a world of a difference. The veggie had a lot of flavor thanks to the Havarti and hummus! Only think I will say is that the price point is a little steep for college kids (especially when the place next door does 2 for 1 burritos). For two drinks, two sammiches and salads, we came to about $20+. Definitely worth a try if you're looking for adventurous grilled cheese.

I found this place on a whim while I was craving a grilled cheese. The menu looked pretty neat and thankfully the sandwich was incredible. The establishment is quaint, but isn't lacking in character. I got my tomato basil sandwich to go, but I definitely want to go back again to dine in. They serve wine and beer, as well as salads and a great selection of melts. I'm always a sucker for packaging, and the grilled cheeses come in boxes that resemble mini pizza boxes. Thumbs up in my book. I'll definitely be back, I've got my eye on "the chipster."

Great concept & menu. The service was eh. Not impressed with my sandwich though. My daughter got veggie I got the one with tomato. Maybe it was my bread to cheese ratio or the lack of crisp you expect from a grilled cheese (mine looked nothing like some of these pics) What ever it was I remember I was disappointed. I must say though, my sister got one with meat and she enjoyed hers. Even though we all placed our orders back to back. They forgot to make her sandwich and we were almost done eating when she went up to ask what was taking so long. (I think she was just starving, we'd been out shopping all day) LBVS

First time here. I got the Triple Cheese, which I thought was very good. Cheese was perfectly melted and the good-quality bread perfectly toasted. Prices were more than fair. However...it really took much too long: 21 minutes to get my sandwich, starting at 12:15pm on a weekday. They only appear to have 4 sandwich presses, and it's just not enough capacity.

Cheese and wine. Wine and cheese. Any way you pair them, it's a match made in heaven. So my inner child jumped for joy after my inaugural lunch at UMelt this past weekend. I will be back to make my way through their menu of gourmet grilled cheeses, made even better when paired with the cutest single serving plastic cups of cabernet sauvignon or pinot grigio you've ever seen. Sitting at the counter overlooking the JWU quad on Weybosset Street actually manages to feel vaguely European, with a feast consisting of a sandwich called "The Wild" (Swiss cheese, caramelized onions and green apple on white bread) and a darling little cup of vino. Sandwich offerings (there are about ten different grilled cheese options) range from the traditional to the gut-busting (macaroni and cheese - squished up and served between bread slices!). Combination plates are available, should you be completely unlike me, and want to pair your sandwich with something other than wine (i.e., soda, a salad, a cookie - to which I say, more wine!). Everything is made fresh and sourced locally. Service is swift and really sweet; our server left her station at the counter to come over and chat with us about our meal, and talk a bit about the new location, the second UMelt in RI, which opened just a few months ago over the summer. Prices are standard (my sandwich was about $6, and my wine was $6). The place also looks clean and the setting is pleasant enough to eat in rather than getting a takeout meal. For a hangout that's located right next door to a university, these qualities are commendable and notable. If I worked in Downcity, this would be my preferred lunch spot. But this is also my kind of place to seek out after a night of cocktails and carousing, since, when feeling a bit tipsy, my particular proclivities tend toward cheese - and lots of it. I foresee many happy returns to UMelt in my future. Many thanks to the saleswoman at Luniac Glamour located one block away in the newly-reopened Arcade, who suggested UMelt to my friend and I--because shopping, and tending to a shop, can make you hungry, and UMelt is there to make everything better.

Ate here for the second time I would think that a grilled cheese sandwich should be as hot as my soup. I had the Cubano which was okay however there seems to be heavy on the bread filling ratio. The best part of the Cubano would be the pickles which were not enough and quite thin. The soup was good the service was excellent but again I understand using local ingredients but in this case doesn't necessarily mean better or tastier. Umelt just doesn't do it for me .

Was told to get the White Trash and was not disappointed. Mac 'n Cheese, cheddar cheese and pulled pork = food coma. Very casual and packed with college kids. Perfect comfort food.

Want a GREAT sandwich made with fresh ingredients? GO HERE. They serve BEER now? "Woah!" (Joey style) Great price, friendly and quick service, and clean. This is gonna be a staple to downtown Providence. If you need a quick bite to eat and sick of crappy Subway, go here. You'll never go to Subway again!

I had heard about a new lunch spot downtown and I was excited to check it out. While there may seem to be quite a few options it is much of the same old, same old and it gets pretty boring. I have a salad most days but today I had a hankering for something more substantial so I thought it would be a perfect day to check out UMelt. It's a small shop but very clean and open. They had their menu on TV Screens, which was pretty cool and it included pictures of the items. LOVED this. I asked about soups and learned they have only Tomato Soup in the summer. Perfect! Honeslty, I love tomato soup and it's hard to find a good one. The person who waited on us was fantastic, and offered me a sample of the soup. It's not the best I've had but it was good and certainly something I would take a walk for when I'm in the mood for soup. There is a lack of good soup down town so please UMelt, keep the tomato soup year round. I know come fall/winter I will be trekking that way quite frequently just for the soup! In addition to my cup of soup I opted for the Vermonster - cheddar cheese, bacon,, and carmelized onion grilled on marble rye. It. Was. Awesome. Crisp bread, just the right amount of grease, and while I could have done with a little more cheese (I lean towards a gooey grilled cheese) I really think the amounts lended themselves to a perfect balancing of flavors. In each bite I tasted cheese, the salt of the bacon, and the sweet tanginess of the onions. It was a fantastic lunch. One of the things I noticed and commented on was the usage of local, fresh ingredients. I love this! They have many salads that look worth trying, and I look forward to testing them out. I also look forward to trying some of the other sandwich options which really do have something for every taste. Two big thumbs up from me. Definitely worth giving a shot.

Guys this is a great little place. I went the healthy option (I know, it is a grilled cheese place), I had the veggie and a side salad. My gf and I split our sandwiches, she got the BBQ Pork. Now I will come clean, I am a lover of beef, pork and all things meat, but my veggie sandwich was much more flavorful than the BBQ and the pork was pretty tasty too. They have a lot of interesting and local options and the owner/guy behind the counter is down to earth. Their success will obviously mount on JWU kids going there but trust me it is more than just a "college" place.

I ate at this truck tonight during a food truck event at the park. It was crazy busy and the line was moving slowly but that seemed to be the norm tonight so I waited patiently For my grilled cheese and Mac and cheese. The grilled cheese was fab. I had one with bacon two kinds of cheese and apple. It was quite good. The bacon was crisp. Sandwich was cheesy and bread buttery. My Only dislike was the Mac and cheese. It was kind of soggy and maybe needed some Panko or bread crumbs for flavor. The prices were reasonable and if I saw them parked somewhere I'll definetly stop and get a grilled cheese.

I know about the dairy free cheddar, I'm just not a fan. Nothing beats the real deal lol. I actually was chatting with the guy who was making the sandwich about lactose free cheeses. I told him that Cabot cheddar (as well as a lot of other brands) is lactose free, there are a lot of good lactose free cheddar and Swiss options available too. Recently I just had a cheddar with hot peppers that tasted exactly like pepper jack cheese, boats head lacy Swiss is lactose free as well. It would be amazing of you guys offered some selection like that. No matter, I'll still be back because my son loves it and my fiancé wants to try it now too!

I stayed the night in PVD and saw the good reviews of this place on YELP. Gave it a try and I was blown away! The food was AWESOME! I got the white trash sandwich, suggested by the cashier, and I'm glad he did. Great place to grab an out-of-this-world sandwich and get on your way. I will be back next time...

Went today with the boyfriend. Got two sandwiches to share, the white trash and the special of the day which had pepper jack cheese, avocado, and tomato jam. Boyfriend LOVED both. I thought they were pretty good, but the mac on the white trash wasn't cheesy at all. The bread was cooked perfectly. The guy who helped us was awesome and the cookie was pretty good too. If you enjoy grilled cheese and are nearby you should go give this place a try. also....the melty walls were kinda neat. :)

Went here last night with the man and the pups. Outdoor seating (a few tables and chairs) was helpful as we had our dogs with us. The guys behind the counter were super friendly. I got the federal hill without sausage (vegetarian) and my boyfriend got the white trash. Mine was AMAZING. He enjoyed his as well but we both agreed it needed maybe some pickles for acidity to cut down on the cheese and BBQ flavor. I can't fault Umelt for this but there was a deliriously intoxicated guy sitting outside yelling incoherently and making us (and everyone walking by) uncomfortable. I brought it to the attention of one of the workers and he said he must've come over from Aruba Steve's and he has asked him to leave before but today he was "behaving". Definitely made me wish we hadn't had the dogs and could've sat inside.

This place has a variety of grilled cheeses that are delicious! I tried the White Trash and the Wicked. Even though there are many items on these grilled cheeses they do not fall a part at all! They were both delicious, I probably like the White Trash more though because I love mac and cheese! The White Trash has mac and cheese, bbq pulled pork, cheddar cheese on sour dough. The Wicked has havarti cheese, turkey, apples, caramelized onions, wicked sauce on white. The customer service was great and the place is clean. We had the Wicked to go and it was easy to heat up. Also, the take out box was cute and had things like tic tac toe, mark the dots kinda thing! I'd definitely come back here and also to try some others!

Went to Providence for their WaterFire festival so we decided to eat here. This is a relatively small place with a few tables on the sides. The menu is pretty basic: craft grilled cheese sandwiches that are pretty affordable. I had the White Trash, which was BBQ pulled pork and mac-and-cheese in a grilled cheese. This sandwich was decadent and very delicious. The staff was very helpful and went through the menu with us. We were the only ones there, but I appreciated the friendliness they gave us. If you are looking for something quick and filling, this place is a delicious option.

There is something about grilled cheese that brings you back to your childhood, but this my friends is not your childhood grilled cheese. With so many flavor combinations, this stop is a cheese lovers dream. From the classic American cheese on white to a BBQ pulled pork perfection when I am craving a grilled cheese this is where my taste buds take me. The grilled cheese is a perfect size for lunch and the price point also hits the spot.

Indoor dining area and tables outside. Made fresh and quick. Lots of grilled cheese options and a few soups. The Cubano and The White Trash were both tasty, although meat in the Cubano was still cold after the sandwich was grilled.

Excellent Concept, what's better then cheese filled food?! You must try white trash. Pulled Pork, Mac & Cheese, & more cheese... What else do you need to hear? Also the honey roasted banana and Nutella is out of this world!

A friend of mine ate here earlier this year and said it was amazing. I was home visiting family for Christmas and we all decided to try it. Umelt is across the street from the Johnson and Wales admissions office next to a Mexican place called Cilantro. It's not that big inside, with maybe a dozen tables. We went the day after Christmas and had the restaurant to ourselves. The staff was friendly and attentive. There is an overhead menu as you enter with a list of sandwiches, salads, and soups. The menu has a picture of each sandwich next to the description. We ordered a White Trash (pulled pork, Mac n cheese and cheddar), Federal Hill (sausage, fresh mozzarella, and roasted red peppers), and a Triple Cheese (Swiss, havarti, and honey goat cheese), and a salad and tomato bisque soup. Everything was excellent! Each sandwich was carefully prepared, perfectly grilled, and full of gooey, melted, cheesy, goodness. The white trash was a surprise. We were expecting a mess. Instead, the Mac n cheese stayed in the sandwich and the sauce from the pulled pork was tomatoey and combined with the mac n cheese to create a great flavor. It was probably the best of the three sandwiches we ordered. The other two sandwiches were also excellent. Bottom line is that Umelt makes terrific grilled cheese sandwiches. The soup and salad were very good, but the sandwiches are the stars. If you get a chance, try it yourself. You won't be disappointed.

First time here. Very affordable. Great music playing fast friendly workers. A grilled cheese lovers heaven! Cute little alcove of a place but not divey. I felt very welcome. I'm trying something new today. Honey Goat cheese and havarti cheese. Wish me luck! Regardless of the product, is one back for sheer reason of the are super cool!!

UMelt is top notch. My first experience at UMelt was disappointing. I had a white trash sandwich with cold macaroni. I'm pleased to update my review because my last experience at UMelt was great. This time I ordered the Chipster. it was crunchy, cheesy, and just a little salty. The staff was very friendly and made my second time at UMelt a much more enjoyable. I'm excited to try another interesting sandwich

I had the vegetarian option for my grilled cheese- I loved it- the vegetables were sautéed, it contained avocados which I lovee. The only disappointing thing which make this review a 3 star is that the bread is processed bread. It's not home-made nor fresh. I believe that in a great grilled cheese, bread is a key component and their choice of wonder bread that you can buy from a grocery store brings down the potential quality this store provides.

Walked into Umelt one day randomly. Cuz Who doesn't like a good ol' fashioned grilled cheese right? Well guess what? You don't know a god damn thing about grilled cheese. Not until after you've had Umelt that is. I was amazed at the selection! How do I choose just one I asked myself. Can I afford 3? Wait, you guys serve beer!?!? Nutella?!?!! So basically there's nothing to think about. If you like crazy tight combinations of bread, cheese, bacon and other dope stuff hit up UMelt, like now!

Let me start with full disclosure. The owner of this place is a good friend of mine. Umelt is a small business that emphasizes personal relationships and interaction with the local community. Jon works hard to innovate new ideas for the restaurant, expanding the menu, and innovating new selections that he believes will take Umelt to the next level. I came here for the first time on a Saturday night. I was excited to try Jon's new restaurant, and he took my gf and I here on our way home. We went crazy! I got the grand tour, behind the scenes, and a sampling of 6 different sandwiches. The Whitetrash (Umelts signature sandwich) was delicious as was anything with pulled pork or turkey on it. I know this place is a grilled cheese shop, but what they don't advertise enough, and what really comes through when you talk to Jon, is how they get their produce and meat. They try their best to make jelly's and meats in house, and source their ingredients from farmers. The pulled pork is cooked in the store, and the Turkey breast is cooked in an oven and sliced homemade. I also really enjoyed the basic Tomato Basil grilled cheese. The Turkey and Fig jelly was rather sweet. I prefer savory food, and the natural fig jelly is sweeter than I thought it would be. If you have had store bought fig jelly, this might be sweeter than you anticipate. The staff at Umelt is very professional. The menu has grilled cheese suggestions, but the sandwiches are customizable The staff will work with you to create the grilled cheese that you would like. We had tons of left overs. Some of my favorites I loaded into the car. My mom found the grilled cheeses in the fridge, and ate most of the left overs the next day. She loved them. I wish I could get more. I was sad, I barely had any for lunch. The takeout boxes the sandwiches come in are great. Once you see the packing, you will definitely want to try what is inside. When I got home I was excited to tell all my friends about Umelt, and what Jon is trying to do. My highlights were the Turkey breast and Pulled Pork that make in-house. The meats are homeade, thoughtfully procured, and rather tasty. Umelt has a strong desire to please their customers and to provide sandwiches that their patrons desire. I have been craving the pulled pork and cheese grilled cheese from Umelt. although, personally, I want a poutine one! Oh ya, the bacon was also awesome. Vermontster = thumbs up.

GLUTEN FREE SANDWICH THAT DOESN'T MAKE YOU WANT TO CRY. I ate here 2 times. The first time I had a classic grilled chees and tomato. The second time I had the turkey/hot sauce one? Make sure you tell them that you are gluten free- they will wrap the sandwich in foil before they cook it. This still may not be good enough for you if your allergy is really severe so watch out. AWESOME GRILLED CHEESE. I wish UMELT was close to where I live in NJ. I would be there all the time. It was delicious.

The second times the charm. This time I ordered the Wicked, a turkey sandwich with apples, caramelized onions, and wicked sauce. A real great combo of sweet balanced by the salty cheese. The wicked sauce really makes the sandwich, it's a little spicy and helps keeps the sweetness down. The menu is clear and the staff are super friendly and happy to recommend something tasty. The to go boxes are like mini pizza boxes and keep your safe for any travel plans you may have. I'm looking forward to trying more Melts soon.

Not just for toddlers and dads who don't know how to cook. As an adult, every now and then you've got to splurge on those calories and just go with what's comfortable. Most sandwiches fit within the 5-6$ range, and salads (...smart move, Umelt) are under $8. Need more motivation to move your heiny? - Umelt partners with LOCAL farms for grains/greens/and cheeses. The menu is simple (a mere 15 options), but if can't decide on which 'wich to wedge into your mouth: do as the Deutsch do and go-German. My coworkers and I debated on our selections before we decided to order a few and split them between us (....the guys LOVED the "White Trash"). "The Chipster" : Cheddar Cheese, Bacon (*I substituted zucchini*), BBQ Cape Cod Potato Chips, on Sourdough. YUM! Great flavor, good cheese-to-bread ratio, and the chip added a nice texture. *Wich whine*: I prefer a saucy sammie, so I added ketchup prior to consumption - otherwise it was a little too dry for my taste. "The Dessert" : Nutella, Honey Roasted Banana, on Raisin Bread. Personally...I don't see anything wrong with having this as a "main", but it certainly was a sweet finish. In fact, I'm sure that I will be returning to stock up on this morsel prior to a Friday-night-out. YUM! A great idea and done so well! From the menu down to the very VIBE of this place (great tunes, great folks, and a downtown-graphic-contemporary atmosphere). Highly-recommended for lunching and pre-party (...and post-party) times.

I stopped in on my lunchbreak one day. As mentioned in previous reviews.. I rate grilled cheese's pretty harshly. They are a staple food item in my diet, and it's also pretty hard (yet many people still do) to mess it up. I researched the best Grilled Cheese places in providence, and decided UMelt was the place to go. Just browsing the website makes my eyes water and my mouth melt. It's only been in my dreams that these flavors, combinations, and possibilities existed.. as a grilled cheese. 10's of 10's of choices and combo deals... coming here is essential to having a good day, a full belly and a great lunch. I went with the original, on wheat bread with cheese. It was the perfect proportion of cheese to bread, the perfect amount melted, and not cooked too long or too short. I got a side of mac and cheese, which is almost better then my mom's (don't tell her) homemade recipe. Considering it was lunch, it was very crowded.. yet I didn't wait more than 5-7 minutes. The employees were super friendly, had a funny catch phrase, and all seemed to be best friends. It made it fun to people watch while I waited. Just writing this makes me want to experience this in my mouth right now. There are so many sandwiches that I need to go back in try. Make a good choice today, do a good deed to yourself. It will literally make you melt.

I love this place (partly because I love grilled cheese). I adore the fact that they use local, fresh ingredients in all of their sandwiches. My favorite are the White Trash, Triple Cheese and Chipster grilled cheese. It's definitely worth checking out if you enjoy grilled cheese. However, a big part of a great grilled cheese is the bread and I feel the bread is lacking here. There is no real flavor and it feels like it overpowers the entire sandwich. The filling to bread ratio is off in that respect. It also lacks that nostalgic buttery taste. In addition, it can be kind of expensive considering its grilled cheese. It's great for the college kids but unfortunately, it's not exactly budget friendly for them as well. It's a place I enjoy going to, nonetheless!

I was visiting Providence and stopped into UMelt for lunch. The concept of a grilled cheese store was brilliant. The food was even better. I got the White Trash on the recommendation of the clerk. Apparently it is the most ordered. It was brilliant. Macaroni on a grilled cheese with slightly sweet pulled pork is going into my home grilled cheese recipe rotation. Excellent place, great atmosphere, convenient location downtown. They even had beer and wine. Very nice.

I have heard great things about this place. I tried their Berry Salad with grilled chicken and it was very good. They locally source the vegetables and fruits for their salads and you can taste how fresh they are. Next time, I will tackle one of the gourmet Grilled cheese sandwiches... YUM !!

Would I sound cheesy if I said this place is the best thing since sliced bread? This middle-aged gal felt like a co-ed hipster during a recent lunch at this Down City college hot spot. Don't go for the ambience -- it's bare-bones cafe atmosphere. Rather, go for the "I can't believe they can make this many variations of grilled cheese" goodness. Service is extremely speedy and staff go out of their way to be friendly. My helpful server recommended The Wicked when I asked, and it did not disappoint. How can you go wrong with turkey, Havarti, apples and carmelized onions? Combo that with a silky, rich tomato bisque, and my tummy was very satisfied! Go ahead, indulge your inner child with a decadent grilled cheese -- you know you want to!

A local grilled cheese shop using local products? Sign me up. UMelt has opened its second location in Providence (after their success in Kingston) and it's delish! Using local ingredients, UMelt provides guests with a great sandwich at a nice price. All food is prepared fresh upon order. Options are plentiful. It's a busy place at lunch, so be prepared for a wait and some volume when it comes to noise level. They'll call your name when your sammich is ready. Loved, loved, loved my classic grilled cheese with bacon. Would love to see an option or two with the cheese (only american cheese was offered...would have loved it with cheddar). But they offer a few things to go into the sandwich such as avocado or bacon. Soups looked good, but I wasn't interested in the bisque (nothing against the restaurant, I'm just not a bisque guy). They're going to do just great here in The PVDâ„¢. It's a nice location with plenty of seating (I dined al fresco...a wonderful day for it). Free refills on sodas, too. The only thing I'd really take to task as a criticism...one unisex bathroom. When this joint gets busy, I'll bet one has to wait for the facilities. I'd prefer two bathrooms in an establishment of this size. I'm a fan...great little sandwich shop. Looking forward to my next trip!

I have been to UMelt several times, mostly because it is so close to JWU. The location is great; the food is even better. The only sandwich I have had so far is the White Trash, but it is so good that I just have to order that one every time! Pulled pork and macaroni and cheese....genius! The Tijuana salad is also amazing. You can get a side salad or soup with your sandwich as well, the perfect lunch as far as I am concerned. Would HIGHLY recommend! :)

My friend dragged me here so excited about the pulled pork grilled cheese! She loves it! I ordered the veggie grilled cheese and it was yummy tasty! I like the choices of bread and the creative ideas behind the sandwiches. The guys behind the counter were very friendly and accommodating. The wait was minimal. I can't wait to go back!

I am not sure how U-Melt has received such high reviews. On a whim, I ordered a grilled cheese sandwich during my lunch break, only to open my takeout box and find a totally charred, black sandwich. Perhaps, It was because the establishment had just opened, but not cool. I was very disappointed at my overpriced, nearly $7 pile of burned stuff, and into the trash it went. See my photo. Never again.

This is my first review of a store that is dedicated to what makes America special, the grilled cheese. I have known about the existence of UMelt in Kingston and have never gone that far due to the fact that I am a true Rhode Islander. I instead waited patiently for UMelt to come to me, and it did right along Weybosset Street, where there is plenty of parking. I arrived at UMelt knowing full well what the menu consisted of, grilled cheese. When faced with a decision as to which one to select I was overwhelmed by the choices and relied on Jessica (one of the owners) for help. She recommended the Vermonster for me and for my co-worker in tow who had already Facebooked the shop the White Trash. Of course we did tradesies mid-lunch so I could speak to both. So here goes; The Vermonster: the full flavor of true butter was apparent, no lard, no junk. The bread was crisp on the outside and gooey on the inside, no bending. Inside the sandwich, the bacon was super-crisp with no signs of microwaving or steam-bath drowning. The cheese was super-sharp and high quality cheddar with just enough but not where it was super messy. What I thought made this sandwich super-special however was the fact that it was on rye. The rye was really shocking to the taste buds in an impressive way. I would neve think to combine those flavors together but now that I've tried it I'm a bit disappointed at myself for not thinking about it first. Delish! White Trash: what can't you say about a grilled cheese filled with mac n' cheese and pulled pork. Probably really bad for you but when you bite into it you want to grab a cozy blankey and sweats and not give a damn about how many calories are in it. Nonetheless I would say this was probably the better of the two. Its like eating all of your favorite foods together. A party in your mouth or a cure to a bad day? You decide. Overall, this place deserves 6 stars. 1 for the genius of actually coming up with the idea to create a shop strictly focused on grilled cheese and 5 for the fact that this place nailed it. I can't ever imagine taking my frying pan out and trying to compete with them ever. Nope, my money is on this one. Now go get your butt down there and see what I mean!

What a great place for a big kid like me. I've already eaten here a dozen times and every time it was great. What's better than grilled cheese and tomato soup now that winter is coming.

These sandwiches are soooooo good! I had a BBQ grilled cheese, and after eating one, I decided I needed another for the road. Great price (then again it's only a sandwich). Just wish it was closer to Brown.

after a long day of classes and time in the library Umelt was just the place i needed for a pick me up. Umelt is one of my favorite fast food places to go in almost all of providence. i first discovered Umelt back in the fall and its been a bit of time since i last was there so i decided to go back and i was starving so it was close and a great price for an amazing tasting grilled cheese sandwich. if you are a fan of grilled cheese sandwiches then you need to go here. take your moms famous homemade grilled cheese and add crazy toppings to it and some loving and some food magic and you have yourself a delicious Umelt grilled cheese. when i went today i saw The White Trash sandwich and i just had to try it again. it is just filled with all the yummy goodness a grilled cheese loving sandwich eater like me wants. its got tasty mac and cheese. BBQ pulled pork on this super tasty sourdough bread. it is only my thine time here but it is just always a positive fun experience every time i go. the employees are always smiling happy to see you and just know how to make the perfect grilled cheese sandwich for a hungry college student. it is located in the perfect spot right across the street from Johnson & Wales university. great spot for college students who are looking for a tasty grilled cheese and some mc and cheese. they even have salads. it doesn't get much better than that. a amazingly yummy grilled cheese sandwich a hearty side of heavenly mac and cheese and a leafy green goodness salad to go with it and complete the perfect meal. i highly recommend this place 1000 times over and continue to make amazing grilled cheese sandwiches Umelt you rock.

Well, we were really hungry when we stopped in here. 4 grilled cheese sandwiches later, this is what I have to say: You can make a better one at home. The cheeses are so bland and mild, I couldn't tell them apart. Go home where there is a cheese waiting that you know you like, and then you won't be disappointed like we were today :/ Sorry Umelt, really wanted to love you; the concept is gastronomically perfect, but fail on delivery. Two stars because it wasn't unpalatable (nicely grilled), just not enjoyable.

Awesome concept for a restaurant. This place is great. When my friends and I walked in, we were immediately greeted by an extremely friendly host behind the counter, who was more than happy to make recommendations and most importantly, make us feel welcome. Even though it's a fast food place, they brought the food out to us and checked up on how things were. That's an especially nice touch in a place like this. The food was also excellent, I will definitely be back to try more!

To be honest this place is really good. If you're thinking should i? Lemme just sum it up for you really quick... YOU SHOULD! Everyone's friendly, fast service even when theres 50 people jammed in the store, and it is ALWAYS delicious! Would recommend for anyone!

My husband and I went to UMelt for lunch a couple of weeks ago and were immediately taken by the fun vibe of the restaurant. Great decor, fab colors, and we love that the produce and cheeses are local. In fact, there is a blackboard that states where "today's" items are sourced. Farm to table makes for a more local and neighborhood feel. Staff is friendly and pleasant. My husband had the Tomato basil. He loved the pesto and said that the balsamic glaze really made the sandwich. I had the sweet berry salad and loved it. Just the right amount of goat cheese and the dressing was yummy. I later found out that the dressings are made in house. Prices are reasonable, too. This restaurant is so much nicer than the run of the mill chains around the area, Definitely recommend!

This place rocks. The staff is kind, the food is local and wholesome and the prices are great. No complaints. You're truly missing some great grilled cheese if you don't make it here.

Awesome little place...had the Vermuenster (sp) ugh so good. Can't wait to go back and try some more of their cheesy melty specialties. The tomato basil is totally next my list...kinda reminds me of grilled cheese meets a caprese salad. Just wish they were open late night bc this would be the perfect spot to cap off the night after a few brews. Also the staff are quick and very friendly.

Nutella dessert sandwiches, grilled cheese with BBQ pulled pork, mac n' cheese, and chips...how does it get better? With $3 Gansetts! Try it out, lots of combinations that seem crazy but taste amazing.

It was just OK! I had the Vermonter with cheddar cheese, bacon and grilled onions on rye. It was nice. But for $5.45? I asked if the price included chips? No! Pickle? No! And this was one of the least expensive options. Most of the others were $6.95. I can make an equally good grilled cheese at home for far less. I LOVE the concept of this place - and the variety - but the sandwich was pretty basic, just not out of the ball park. So, for value alone, I just can't give it above 3-stars. Throw in some affordable extras - like chips or a pickle - and I'm on board. I do plan to go back, and try a different sandwich, so maybe my rating will jump up!

Went to Umelt for the first time the other day on my lunch break. Everything was absolutely amazing. I was greeted immediately when I came in by a friendly employee at the register. I got the BBQ pulled pork, and was able to customize it a little to my liking. The pork was amazing, and I was told they roast their own for six hours a day and even make their own rub and BBQ sauce. The sandwich was amazing and I am looking forward to trying the others. The place is very hip with bright colors, a fun atmosphere, and very helpful employees. One of my favorite things is the board that says where all the local produce and other things come from. They make pretty much everything in house too. If you haven't tried Umelt yet I would definitely recommend stopping in next time your down city Providence, I'll definitely be going back, it may even be my new favorite place.

Oh how I wanted to love you, but alas it was not meant to be. I was very excited to try UMelt, the grilled cheese sandwiches all sounded awesome. I went for The White Trash and was looking forward to the flavor explosion coming my way but was completely underwhelmed when I took my first bite. The sandwich was bland . . . how could that be??? It had mac & cheese, cheddar, and pulled pork on it which on their own are all awesome so when put together should have been super duper awesome, right? It was not and it was such a let down. The husband's Vermonster was just okay as well. Wish we had liked it better.

Good food, but way overpriced. Much of the stuff down city is jacked up although, so I don't blame them.

UMelt is so good, but so rich. I have tried the Vermonster (on sourdough), the Turkey Brie (on sourdough) and the Triple Cheese (with avocado). I have also had a bite (or three) of hubby's White Trash and Dessert (Nutella and honey roasted banana on raisin bread - um, YES, PLEASE!). I really enjoy their sandwiches, but I have to be in a heavy lunch kind of mood to go there! Like either no work to do in the afternoon or not at work at all. The sandwiches take a little while to make since they are made to order, but it is well worth the wait. UMelt is definitely worth checking out. You will not find a better grilled cheese in Providence.

Very nice.
