My wife and I went to Narragansett to find someplace we had never been to eat. We were happy to find Maharaja. The service was great. Our waitress was very attentive and pleasant. The food was very good. And we took almost as much home with us as we ate. We had dinner for 2 with leftovers for $45 (with no alcoholic beverages). Plus a decent view of the water. Unfortunately the deck was closed because of the weather.

Maharaja moved into what used to be the breakfast place behind almalfi under new management. I was so excited to hear Indian was coming back to Narragansett. First of all, the food was TO DIE FOR. Amazing spices, and huge portions for lunch. If you enjoy indian food do not pass up this awesome restaurant. Exceeded my expectations, and i'm going to go out on a limb and say best indian in Rhode Island.

Good Indian food in Narragansett? Yes! Went for lunch and enjoyed the samosas, naan, tikka masala and lamb curry. Will definitely be going back.

Was very excited when I drove by Narragansett Pier and saw that Maharaja was returning! Good Indian food is very desperately needed in this area. The next best Indian restaurants are in Providence,RI Groton,CT and Mystic,CT respectively. Not even ONE Indian restaurant in between this large swath of area....UNTIL NOW! Went for lunch today and was highly impressed. Had the Chicken Tikka Masala,Vegetable Naan, with a Mango Lassi. The CTM had great depth of flavor and was delicious with garam masala and fenugreek shining through. It was like a Sunday dinner version of CTM. Careful attention was paid to it and it shows. Naan was nice and buttery with a good char to it. The Mango Lassi was very refreshing on this hot day and had either cinnamon or nutmeg in it which I had never experienced before in a Lassi and was awesome. The Chef Kumar definitely knows what he is doing. His food is legit and authentic. Dennis,my waiter was very welcoming and friendly. As the popularity of this place increases, I do think he will need more help with the room completely filled. *The only small point of contention I had was the AC was not working and the room was hot with no circulation. I was assured by Dennis that the AC would be fixed in the near future. Also,I ordered the CTM medium hot and it was a little hotter than I expected.Still amazing, but I would order it mild next time. Please,do yourself a flavor and support this excellent Indian restaurant that is SO needed in this area. I very much want it to succeed and become a staple in the South County dining scene!

Some of the best Indian food we have had since Mumbai. Highly favored but too hot. So subtly spiced, really delicious. Everything was outstanding and authentic from the raita to the fried paneer to the goat korma. Dennis the host/manager is a so pleasant and earnest and anxious to please. we had a great time. Karma the chef is so good with sauces - superb food.

Mr. Husband and I have been in a couple of times now, and tried a bunch of different things and really liked everything we've had. The place is small, and being tucked away in the same building as another restaurant and and inn, unless you know where it is, it might be a little hard to find. Both times our service was great (although the second time, there seemed to be only one server waiting on everyone. Our wait was a little longer at times, but given the situation he seemed to be in, we never felt neglected and he was definitely making an effort to make sure we had everything we needed. I've been to some restaurants that had plenty of staff that could clearly take some tips from him on service.) I digress though. The food...delicious. They give you complimentary papri chat and sauces to start, and have a modest drink and beer menu. Over several visits, Mr. Husband had the spinach paneer, chicken korma, and chicken vindaloo. All were generous and flavorful servings with plenty of paneer and chicken pieces. They also will vary the spice level for you, which is nice since we like it good and spicy. I also couldn't resist the paneer pakoras. I think the only two qualms I've had with the food was with the nan and the mixed Tandoori grill appetizer. For the price, I wish there had been a little more served, but given that the food was so good and the rest of their menu prices are reasonable, these are minor things. And the best part...they do takeout. Which we haven't tried yet, but I imagine we could quickly become a little too accustomed to getting!

We orders the veggie samosa as an appetizer and they were perfectly spiced and probably the best samosa I have ever eaten. For an entree I got the vegetable biryani and my wife ordered channa masala. So impressed. The biryani had lots of perfectly cooked cashews and the veggies were fresh and delicious. The chick peas in the channa masala had a great texture and were just right with the spices. I would absolutely come here again!

Food was amazing, service was great, highly recommend you have to come here if you're in area. Nicest staff, inexpensive and super knowledgable. Was with a variety of people who love Indian food and it was my first experience, they explained everything to me and everyone had a great experience.

Best food ever. Mango lassi is the best. Very sweet people. Also, lamb Briani was very delicious. Fish curry was very good. Highly recommended to anyone who would like to try authentic Indian cuisine.

I felt the need to update this review and change my rating to 5 stars since my original review was actually my first on yelp. I've been to Maharaja several times and never been disappointed. I usually order take out but have dined in on a few occasions as well. The service at the restaurant is very friendly and super helpful which makes me want to eat in more often. I've had countless items on the menu and all have been absolutely fantastic! My favorite is still the chicken tikka masala which I request spicy. They know how to spice up a dish at Maharaja and if you don't like spicy - order your meal mild. The medium spice is more than enough for most folks who like spicy - yet I still often order very spicy which is over the top spice outstanding. . I really wish I saw more of a crowd here as I fear the locals aren't giving them enough business to sustain. Many friends who I consider to be Indian food connoisseurs have claimed this is the best Indian food in the state, and I agree. If you want to try Indian cuisine or are already a fan - go to Maharaja, go often and enjoy!!

I live in Narragansett and I know the tourists all come for our seafood, but on the nights when they are seafooded out( because places are so full) , I would so suggest they try Indian food! The staff is awesome and will walk you through stuff you are not used to! But I will tell you, you will enjoy and be a fan of Indian cooking!

Visited for the second time this year because it was so good. Great location as it is right across the street from the beach-superior service and the food is incredibly fresh and seasoned exactly as you ask for. We both had lamb dishes and garlic naan. If you like Indian good/ this is probably the best choice you could make.

Wonderful! We waited too long to come here! This food was so flavorful and well presented. It was kept warm in wonderful bowls. And was shared perfectly with the family. The Taj beer was a perfect addition. We had the pakora appetizers and masala and saag shrimp and chicken. Living in Boston I have had good Indian cuisine but this was even better!

Visiting the area all the way from Florida and decided to stop in because we love Indian. The staff was very friendly and they have the best samosa I have ever had the pleasure of eating. The goat biryani is excellent as well. We will certainly return!

I love spending time in Narragansett. Its a great town, but the food, the goods are few and far between. This is especially true for the small little independents. Maharaja is making good on being the exception. About a year ago the small dining room at the front of the Village Inn became an Indian restaurant. The patio deck and inside bar are still part of "Oceanside", but the food I'm interested in is over here. Chef Puneet Kumar is cooking up some amazing Tandoori and north Indian classics, and bringing the heat! The night we visited, we had the dining room nearly to ourselves, with one other couple braving the cold rain on a weeknight. I imagine, that will change as their reputation grows, the food is good enough to carry a following. We started with the Vegetable Samosas. I had ordered a Lamb Keema Samosa, but it was not available. That may have been fortuitous, this vegan option was delicious. The deep fried pyramid, filled with potato and pea, coriander and garam masala, jumped out with deep, bold, and layered flavor. I had the Lamb Biryani, and this should start with a note. Our server asked for our preference for spiciness, on a scale from 1 to 10. I like very spicy food, quite a bit actually, and asked for a 7/10. What I got was was perfect for me, though I am certain that many people would not have enjoyed this meal. It was hot, quite, quite hot. That worked nicely in the Biryani, a dish with many bold and complex flavors, that were able to keep up with the chilis. And it was built on a base of Basmati rice, which moderated the heat quite nicely. My wife ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala, and a 4/10. Her dish was unworldly hot. The Tandoor roasted cubes of white meat chicken were cooked in a Crayola bright, red tomato and cream sauce. It was too much heat for her to enjoy. The waiter noticed right away, and bought out a milder version the chef prepared quickly. This batch was a softer, creamier color, the tone tomato soup and milk, and was delicious. We brought a bit of both preparations home, the portions are generous, and I too found the heat too much to take without mixing. Its entirely possible that the "heat index" for our orders got mixed up, mine with the 4 and the Tikka a 7. But, you should be careful when ordering here, they bring the heat, and its great.

We had such a nice experience here! The room is very unassuming when you walk in so I didn't know what to expect. But we were immediately welcomed and felt like family. The men that worked there were so sweet to my baby girl (8 months) and bent over backwards to make us feel comfortable; we were nervous she would make a scene. And the best part was that the food was exceptional. A lot of places say they make authentic, spicy Indian food, but this has been the best I have ever had, which was so unexpected in the midst of a town that seems to only sell fried seafood. A true hidden gem:)

Visited Maharaja's with a few friends and had a good time. The staff was very helpful at providing recommendations and warnings on the spicier dishes. The Tandoori Assorted Platter is a good appetizer to share with 2-3 people. The Lamb Korma (lamb cooked with cashew nuts) was very delicious. The restaurant's interior could use some improving as it's not the most flattering.

This is my third review for this place. Every time I go back, I honestly feel like I have died and gone to heaven. If possible, I'm gonna ask the chef to cater my wedding. It. Is. So. Good. The #46 is a dish that I dream of ... Peppers and onions with chicken tikka in a creamy spicy gravy... With the garlic naan all crispy and buttery with garlic pieces on the outside. I can't say enough about this place!

Minus for a small location considering the title Maharaja. Roti and Naan were typical and spices tingle your senses. Info : mention if you need spiciness in your dish so that it can suit your taste. Good service. Above average fare in this location.

Best Indian food in Rhode Island in my opinion. It's still a hidden jewel so it's never packed and you get your food fast. It's small and quaint. We always get the lamb appetizers with the dipping sauce. Today we opted for the honey ginger naan, ridiculously awesome. Chicken vimdaloo is always a go to. Always comforting food that's hits the spot. Owners are super nice and professional. Clean place, wish I lived closer to get take out.

We love Indian food and eat it often and anywhere we can find it. This restaurant is excellent on all accounts: service, atmosphere and THE FOOD! If you don't like spicy, don't eat Indian, but this is spicy and delicious. It's ranks among the best we've had! We started with vegetable samosas and two enormous mounds were served to us followed by a sizzling platter of tandoori with a sauce that I would have liked to bath in! For our entree we had the chicken tikka masala and dal makhni. The jasmine rice was long grained and perfectly steamed. Our garlic naan was so light and garlicky. Everything was tasty and our bill was 'easy to digest' too! We ended up taking most of our entrees home since this was way too much food for us! If you appreciate the rich, aromatic flavors of the Indian peninsula, you'll love The Marharaja!!

5 stars for a restaurant worth returning to as many times as I do. Consistently excellent food if a little on the spicy side. Even 'mild' makes my ankles sweat but add a little raita and presto, perfect.

This is the best Indian food you will ever have, hands down, in Rhode Island. I can't say that this is the best restaurant as the wait staff aren't too knowledgable about the food and they aren't overly attentive. Not to mention the restaurant is also attached to a hotel which those visitors walk through to get out of the building (regardless if they should or not). But the food is by far the most authentic I have ever had. The bread basket filled with scrumptious naan is by far out of this world and their masala, korma, and appetizers are to die for. This is by far my favorite Indian place to go to.

I went online to look at Maharaja's menu just to see what they served. Much to my surprise they have Bhel Puri! This is a street snack that I've come to love for it's sweet and sour taste and it's crispy saucy texture. I haven't seen it served in Rhode Island since the 90s. My son and I came and sat down in an empty restaurant. No one but take outs came in the whole time. It was a Tuesday so maybe it's just not that busy on the weekdays. I'm not really surprised, this is a seasonal town. The tables are nicely made up with fabric napkins but there are also paper ones under the silverware. That's helpful as if you eat traditionally you may need the paper to clean your hands. We ordered the Vegetable Samosa which have the potato and pea mix, the Behl Puri which doesn't have the potatoes I'm accustom to but is of a good size ball of crispies and sauce and cilantro and tomatoes and a mango lassi. The mango lassi isn't over sugared which is very nice, it preserves the taste of the yogurt. It took my son a while to figure out what he wanted to eat. As he decided we agreed upon an aloo paranta and a chapatti. The buttery parantha was stuffed with potatoes and peas and each side was distinctive from the other making it easier to use it to pick up food. The drier chapati was also made so that it could be easily used to pick up food. I decided to order the Lamb Korma but in case they didn't have any would have gotten chicken. I'd read here that someone had come and they were out of lamb. Not tonight! The lamb swam in the silky rich orangish sauce and was delicious. My son ordered Alu Palak which is a "simple" dish of potatoes and spinach. Typically I'm not a big spinach fan when eating out. I've had too many canned tinny spinach dishes for my taste. Tonight though this dish was hearty, not metallic tasting with just enough salt to flavor and not overwhelm. My only complaints are that the tamarind chutney tasted waxy and the mint chutney was way too watery. I would have also liked a bigger samosa but their taste was so homey and delicious that I gobbled mine up. I really hope this place stays here in Narragansett. South County needs an Indian restaurant.

Ambiance isn't anytjing special, but the food was really good. Service was mixed. Very nice, but needs some training and tidying up. It's hidden in the Village Inn so you have to know its there. Next time the wait at Crazy Burger it too long, check it out. Wish it was still BYOB.

Outstanding! Hands down the best Indian food in Rhode Island. Chicken saag, samosa, naan, chicken vindaloo --- best ever. Order it hot! Comes out amazingly spicy. I can't get enough of their food. I could eat it every day. Large menu with so many choices. You will love it!

My husband and I really like this restaurant. I will agree with some other writers that the ambience could be improved, but the food is excellent and the service wonderful. The menu is large with many options. The samosas are delicious and the korma has just the right amount of spice. The biryani dishes are also great. There is always plenty left over to take home! So I give it a 4/5 (with some decor and maintenance work it could become a 5/5).

We had dinner there recently on a Saturday evening. The atmosphere is plain and uninteresting but the restaurant is very clean and bright. The food was yummy- I had lamb saag- my husband the mixed appetizer which had so many different items that he only finished it at home after 2 evenings. The bread was stuffed with vegetables and was outstanding. Alas the service was quite poor- it almost seemed that each of the 3 wait people were totally inexperienced, albeit well intentioned.

We have now eaten here many times and feel it is one of the best Indian Restaurants we have ever eaten in, rivaling our favorite, which is in Bermuda. Really complex flavors, especially in the Korma, Bhel Puri and Mughlai Biryani (who'd have thought a biryani could even be interesting?). The menu is standard Indian, not creative, but the execution is fantastic. Poori is available but not on the menu. Except for the Bhel Puri, we're not crazy about the appetizers. Very hard to find, but worth it. Tucked in a corner of the Village Inn Hotel, across from the theater. It's worth finding, for the food. No atmosphere. They share a liquor service with the restaurant next door, so there is usually a nice selection of micro-brews. If you love Indian food and don't require elaborate ambience, this is well worth going a little out of your way to try.

What a find! As a lover of Indian food, it's always been so frustrating that there is no Indian food in Newport. At last we've found a place closer than Providence, and with GREAT food! It's a simple little place, with a good menu - all the usual staples, plus some you don't see everywhere, like papri chat and Goan vegetable curry. Service is friendly and knowledgeable - thanks, Sajan!

Indian food, by the ocean, on a deck .. can't really beat that overall scenario. The food was pretty good (2 starrish) , the view was great, right above the beach (add a star for that) .. i don't think there are too many other restaurants/bars with views this nice around here. Service was pretty good for the off-hour we were there. We did overhear one waitress sitting at the bar say that she thought an indian restaurant at the beach was stupid and it should just be a burger place. Parking lot was kinda junk and people around here just dont know how to properly drive.

This was my second visit. We went for an early dinner. The food is amazing!! Taste authentic. The service was very catering to our needs as my wife ordered the spicy curry and the waiter quickly came to her rescue with ingredients to make the food milder. The prices are very reasonable when I consider my leftovers were a complete meal the next day and taste just as good as when we were served.

So so disappointed. Since moving to Newport last year my husband and I have been craving Indian food so we were thrilled to see a highly rated Indian place pop up in Narragansett. We ordered the pakoras, which were decent but not great, the tandoori chicken and the lamb korma. Tandoori was just OK, nothing special, but the korma was so incredibly rich and had so much butter in it that we both felt like our arteries were clogging to a standstill during the carried home. A little indulgent is okay but this was one of those times when you can't get the coating off of the roof of your mouth, even hours later. Just way way way too much of a good thing. I will say that the waitress was very nice and attentive and they give you this cracker thing while you wait. Also, it did seem odd that their was no music or anything for background noise but that wasn't a big deal.

Went there for lunch, and we were the only people there on a rainy Saturday. The paneer pakoras were nicely done and set the expectations for the main course. Ordered Baingan Bhartha (mashed eggplant with tomato, onions and spices) and dal makhni. Now, being an Indian, I have very low expectations of Indian restaurants in the US, as even the so called best ones, are below par, when compared to even the most average Indian restaurants in India. But, I fail to understand how one can screw up some of the most basic dishes like Baingan Bhartha and Dal Makhni. The former looked more like a mashed tomato dish than a mashed eggplant one. Hell I couldn't even taste the eggplant. As for dal, it had so much turmeric that it was blunting out the flavor. For hours afterwards, I had bad burps and food coma, with the latter the possible result of baking soda most Indian restaurants put in their bread. Not recommended. Not one bit.

We went for lunch during restaurant week. It was a great deal! $10.00 for a 4-course meal, so we were able to sample several foods. We had the coconut soup and garden salad for apps, the chana marsala and paneer masala for entrees, garlic & cilantro naan bread, and the gulab juman for dessert. Everything was delicious! Rahill (our waiter) was super friendly and helpful. Their regular prices are very reasonable and they have an extensive menu. Ambience is lacking, which is the only reason I gave this 4 out of 5 stars. Definitely going back and looking forward to it!

now i've only been once and i will be giving them a second chance but this was my experience. first the drinks, i ordered a "dark and stormy" which is supposed to be ginger beer and dark rum. what i got was ginger ale, lite beer, and dark rum in a plastic cup with no ice. very gross. next my appetizer was ice cold. the service was slow and inexperienced and very very young. my entree was great, the proportions are pretty small. although i wanted my entree inhumanly spicy, they asked me to rate how spicy on a scale of 1-10, i said 10. and meant it!! what i got was maybe a 6. perhaps they were thinking something like "crazy white lady can't handle real spicy indian food"

Went there last night. Very nice setting; outdoor patio overlooking water.Incidentally, there was an outdoor concert nearby, so music was nice. All food was delicious. The problem was the service. Long delay before drinks were served (beer got warn while waiting at the bar). Apps served O.K. Entrees were "staggered"; served one after another w/ several minutes delay between 3 and 4th one was "forgotten" and came out after everyone else was almost done. The waitstaff were very friendly though. With a service tune-up, this place could be excellent. It's hard enough to find good Indian food in this area.

We stumbled into Maharaja on a whim, wondering when it had turned from Italian to Indian. Apparently, the restaurant had opened only 9 days earlier! Despite the fact that the place was brand-spanking new, our dining experience was seamless. The food came out quickly, it was delicious, and our server, Stephanie, was attentive and friendly. The chef was willing to accommodate dietary requests. Prices are average for higher-end local Indian dining. I hope this place catches on for summertime because I would be sad if it didn't last! Finally, fantastic Indian cuisine in South County!

I love Indian food and wanted this place to be great .....It is very bright, poorly decorated, cheap drop ceiling, weird pop music blaring...not a good atmosphere at all. There were only 2 people working there (plus the cook) but I wasn't too alarmed (yet) because we were the only ones there when we arrived. One waitress (the one with tattoos) seemed to be training the other girl (the one who was just sitting on a high stool staring at us most of the night). When I would 'look her off' me she would glance away and stare blankly out the window - I am pretty sure this was her first time in a restaurant. The tattoo waitress (nothing against tattoos but odd that not one Indian person at Indian restaurant) warned us that, while you can adjust the spiciness of any dish, the "medium is very hot". So we get this appetizer - I forget what it was called- just a mix of some dried out weird looking chicken, undercooked shrimp and some strange veggies floating at bottom of plate (this was a dish tat's recommended). I had the lamb curry, which was in fact spicy, but it had no complexity of flavor and what is with yellowish rice at an Indian restaurant, not white??. Just some brown gravy with curry powder and some heat to cover the lack of authenticity over the not tender pieces of lamb. The garlic naan was a bit bland but okay I guess. My wife said her dish "was better than it looked". It did not look good and it made her nose bleed (I guess it was spicy) The waitress-in-training did leave her perch, finally, to deliver 2 glasses of wine to some newly arrived patrons. She made it about 5 steps before her platter began to wobble and the 2 glasses fell into her chest and then crashed to the floor. Just the clumsiest move I have ever seen - from what I saw she had a 0% chance of making it all the way to the table she was attempting to reach. Then the half hearted effort to clean up the broken glass was amazing to witness. Just left half the broken glass and wine on the floor until I told the "real" waitress who promised to pick it up. great. The place was visibly dirty as well...honestly I could go on but .... The place is far-away the worst restaurant I, and my wife agreed, have ever been to. Alarmingly bad. Hopelessly bad.

I had the vegetable curry with a medium spicy level. It was delicious, brought me right back to India. Definitely worth trying

In the building that used to house Amalfi. For only being open a week, they did a spectacular job. The service was friendly, the dishes were delicious, the setting was nice. Looking forward for warmer weather and spending some time on the deck with a great view of the beach. There were a few things listed on the menu that they are not offering yet, but a great selection and i am looking forward to going back and getting the gulab jamun and navratan korma. Get in there and try it before the tourists descend!

Not as pictured. Ambience: 1) Photos here do not represent actual restaurant - this DOES NOT have a waterview, it is in the back of the hotel 2) ON VALENTINE'S DAY, blue painter's tape covered the walls - come on, take it off for a special day 3) ZERO ambience - smelled of PineSol and no music whatsover Food: 1) Overcooked, chewy tandoori 2) Negligible meat in the curry 3) Felt much heavier than we are used to Service: Awkward. Sufficient, but awkward. For example, never came back and took away our menus. We had to ask for a drink menu. I felt like we were interrupting something else more important (no one else really in the restaurant, so I am not sure what that was). The whole experience was a big bummer because we just moved here and love Indian. The great reviews led us to choose this for Valentine's Day. I see as I read through more reviews that perhaps the place has moved since it's original location in the front of the hotel and maybe the food has declined as well. I am not sure I would not return, on any day. Maybe, we really love Indian food. Maybe we will give it a second chance.

This is the second time this restaurant has tried to present Indian food. The first time the place was awful, service, food and the bar. it closed ! Now they reopened in tiny area of the building, the new chef creates great Indian food . They get their drinks and bar from the Oceanside Restaurant next door, (attached). The service is typically young non Indian staff who really don't know the food. I have been there many times, there is never more than one or two tables with people. The food is great but the atmosphere is non existent . One or two tacky Indian pieces of art, tables that look like a diner, and a view of the driveway. No Indian music, no atmosphere! But if you can do without the sizzle , the food is worth going for, plus it's the only Indian restaurant in south county. It's more like a Indian diner.Prices are reasonable.
