Went with my husband on Friday evening. The beer was great. I had the maibock which was smooth and oh so flavorful. The calamari was just a touch overcooked. The quinoa wrap was delicious. My husband had the roast beef. Both came with huge portions of curly fries which were very good. Service was very attentive.

Great fish and chips and the beer sampler is great. There are few breweries where all their beer is great. Great place. Give them your money!

I had the traditional lobster roll and lobster bisque soup. Very good and great service. Lobster roll didn't have seasoning, but came with a side of coleslaw and once you add the coleslaw it was Great!

DARK! DISMAL! In 2010 best food I ate on the island. In 2014 so so good and dark atmosphere. 2015 blah food dark atmosphere and more staff than I knew what to do with. Not to mention tuna sandwich was dry and chicken was under cooked but could not tell our waitress bc she was worried about her party of 15 while the rest of the staff just watched. So in the end goodbye Coddington. Oh if you just want beer the blueberry beer is great. So good luck if you give it a try.

Coddington Brewery is a great place in Middletown/Newport to get good food & beer at a fair price. Not to mention its easy to get to, has plenty of parking, reliable service, and is great for all kinds of patrons including families/groups. Located nearby the Newport/Middletown town line, Coddington is a bit off the usual path for diners. So easy to navigate to, and there is plenty of free parking. The right side of the building houses a large bar along with a few high top tables and booths. There is also a pool table. The other side is dedicated to table service including several booths. There are plenty of TV's are around the restaurant, even on the table service side.. easy to catch a game. Coddington is a favorite for lunch with my coworkers, as they have something for everybody. Nothing particularly out of this world, but definitely consistently delicious above average pub food. Lots of appetizers, including Ultimate Nachos which are my favorite. The salads here are huge & very tasty. The menu continues on with plenty of choices: Burgers (the cheeseburger club is amazing!), sandwiches, pizza, seafood, and big plate entrees. There is always a "specials" menu as well. I happen to adore the Buffalo Chicken wrap which comes with shredded carrots and house made blue cheese dressing. I think the beer options here are better than Newport Storm. I wait all year for the Watermelon hefeweizen in the summer. I love the presentation of the fruit infused beers.. your blueberry blonde will have fresh blueberries floating in the glass, and you will get a fresh slice of watermelon on your hefeweizen. Tasty beers and cheap! They also have bottled beer and a full bar. You can get a growler of the brewery beers to go.. as well as full menu service to go! If you are a local, ask about their loyalty rewards card!

I wasn't a huge fan of the food, but the beer was pretty damn good. I'd go back for that anytime.

Good mozz sticks but that's the only food we tried. The beers were very good. The blueberry beer had real blueberries in it! I also really enjoyed both the stout and the porter. Honestly, this place is WAY better than The Storm! Go to both if you can, for the experience, but if you have to choose one, definitely go with Coddington! They have a larger selection, they serve food, and they offer better tasting beers.

Food is excellent. Fresh seafood. Tops are the chowder and calamari. Very good serving of fish and chips and not greasy. The beers are good but I find them a little flat at times. I'd keep coming back here.

Great beer, had Inviero and Doppel Bock, quite good. Food was poor however, out of the 4 meals we ordered 3 we sent back because they were cold. Salmon was overly tough and not re ordered. But the beer was good, sorry food didn't mirror.

This place is great. It's much more of a brew-pub since it has the full restaurant. The beer sampler is crazy! Seven samples that are each 7-oz each will sneak up on you, especially if you drink them within an hour (that's the equivalent of over 4 beers). I highly advise getting food along with the sampler. In addition to the sampler, we started with buffalo chicken dip. It was served hot with chips, carrots and celery. Nothing out of the ordinary about the dip but it was very tasty. I had the Ahi Tuna Steak while my husband had Tex Mex Burger. The tuna was perfectly seared and the wasabi mayo was delicious. The bite I got of the Tex Mex burger was very good, a great mix of flavors. Friendly staff and good service.

My husband and I went here for dinner on a Saturday night. We were seated right away and the service was amazing. It was very busy and the servers were on top of their game! We had the chips and cheese which was delicious but huge (couldn't finish between the 2 of us). I had the Pilgrim Wrap which was like Thanksgiving in a wrap. It came with seasoned curly fries. Both were delicious! I didn't have any beer, but my husband tried a few of their brews. He thought they were good, but nothing out of the ordinary. We'd definitely come back here though next time we are in Newport!

I have only one complaint about this place... Ok 2.... First, I was there the other night and I ordered the salmon with a side of veg and mashed potatoes. The complaint is about the potatoes. Everything else was good. The potatoes were gritty as if they had been cooked the day before and reheated and had no flavor. All they need to do is add more butter salt and cream. I wonder if the chef even tastes the mashed before it goes out. Apparently not. My second complaint is that they have a beautiful fireplace that would really compliment the place and bring in more business. But the stingy owner refuses to use it!!! Even during this brutal winter we've had he refuses to turn on the fireplace. I just don't get it... Cmon man!!!

  • Eric B.

Had the ahi tuna steak sandwich...it was pretty good. The beer sampler was pretty good too. I never thought I would say that watermelon beer would be good, bit I'm sold. I'd like to grab a growler of that and head to the beach. I'll be back!

  • Jerry K.

They have some good brews, that's for sure. Food was alright, but nothing exceptional. As for atmosphere, it's pretty standard for this kind of place. Perfectly fine, nothing wrong about it. It's a good enough place to go and has a decent location if you're just outside Newport and don't want to fight traffic and parking during the high part of tourist season. If you want safe, then this is a good bet. Overall a pretty solid three stars.

Prices were fair for the food although the canned lobster bisque and frozen Tyson chicken tenders were nothing to write home about. I was very happy with the service. The waitress we had was very kind and sincere and service was prompt. The beer, however, was garbage which brought Coddington's score from a 3 to a 1.5 ( rounded up). I've tasted better IPAs from first time homebrewers and the pumpkin ale was a complete joke. If this place had a solid beer offering to back up its mediocre (at best) food I think it would be pretty successful. However, $5 for a 12oz glass of that horrible beer was borderline highway robbery. If this place improved it's beer offering I would consider revisiting. I think this place would be a great candidate for Gordan Ramsey's "Kitchen Nightmares" or Robert Irvine's "Restaurant Impossible."

I ordered a Greek salad with shrimp. I thought the total price was $12. When the salad came it had 4 "overcooked" medium sized pieces of shrimp on it. I thought that was a scam until I received that bill. $21.99 for the shrimp greek salad!!! The $12 was in ADDITION to the 9.99 for the salad. Are you kidding me. $3 per shrimp!!!! I could have gone to O'Brien's in Newport - they only charge $12 for their shrimp greek salad. Long story short, I got my salad comp'd and gave the waitress a $20 tip. I'd rather give her the extra money than the owners of a lousy restaurant!! Good Grief!!!

Went here on a Friday night right before 9pm and was sat right away. Waitress, Kasie, was friendly and attentive. She answered all our questions and made recommendations. Knew the menu well which is always reassuring. Never was without a drink for long. Ordered clams casino-- different than I've had before, with more breading than usual, but still delicious. Baked stuffed scallops AMAZING, huge portion and the accompanying lobster sauce was to die for, even dipped my curly fries in it. Calamari Fra Diavlo - calamari was sautéed to perfection with just the right amount of heat. Overall great restaurant, foods top notch and servers know what they're doing. Will come here again soon to try the lengthy cocktail and dessert menus!

I went here about a year ago with some friends. It was OK, but nothing special. A few days ago my parents were in town and wanted to go here so I gave it another try. My mom and me both ordered medium well burgers. Mine was well, hers was rare. At the end she complained about it and the waitress said that she'll bring out another new burger that was medium well. She brought back the same half-eaten burger that was burnt to a crisp. My dad got an IPA with his meal, later he said that he wanted another one and ended up with a Golden Ale. The waitress argued with him that that was what he ordered to begin with (the Golden Ale's cost more). Pros - The curly fries are good. Cons - Everything else is bad. I do not plan on giving it a third try.

Coddington was a great find. Very good beer and very good food. Life doesn't get better then that. If you happen to drive past it stop and turn around. You won't be disappointed. Everyone I meet there was super friendly. Can't wait to go back.

Take your grandma here. No, really, take her here, she'll love it. With menu staples such as Chicken Pot Pie, Meatloaf and the Thanksgiving Platter, this is an elderly person's dream come true. It is not, however, my dream come true. I find it really depressing - the space is big and nicely decorated and you can view the beer cauldrons (what are those things really called, anyway?) but it's always so sleepy in there and the whole place has the vibe of a "has-been". Dishes are over priced and lack any real flavor. Since it's Granny's fave, I've tried everything from the calamari salad to the linguine alfredo and always leave feeling like I just wasted calories. Pre-plated "house salads" with dried out carrot slivers and mealy tomatoes are insulting and the barely-warmed-through pizza crust reminds of something I'd microwave for myself after school 15 years ago. They brew their own beer and you can try it for ishes and giggles but I've never tasted one that I'd write home about. One major plus is that I've never had to wait for a table on a Saturday afternoon...because it's always dead. D.E.A.D. and they have pool tables and TV's to catch "the game".

Good food. Had the Ocktoberfest specials.

This place is great. They brew the beer onsite and have a great selection to choose from. They also offer seasonal beers such as Watermelon beer in the summer and Pumpkin beer in the fall and winter. Delicious!! You can also take a "Growler" home with you if you love the beer that much! The food is delicious as well. My favorite is their Shepard's pie, but really it's one of those places where everything on the menu is delicious. They have tons of appetizers to choose from, delicious hearty sandwiches, and all of the lunch and dinner staples such as pasta dishes, seafood dishes, delicious steaks, chicken pot pie!, salads, pizza, -- pretty much covers all of the American Fare basics but at a whole 'nother level. Every single dish I've tried has been done to perfection. Another favorite of mine is their terryaki steak stips...perfection... Oh and their French Onion soup - AMAZING....I am going to bet that they seafood dishes are delicious too but I'm allergic so no feedback from me on those. Service is great as well....I've never had to wait long for my food or drinks even when they are booming busy.....The seating is comfortable and by no means "crowded" with the other guests......and if you're sitting at the bar they have snacks to, well, snack on while enjoying your delicious beer! They could improve their bathrooms though I'll say that! The bathroom situation would be more like 2 stars.

Best Chowwder in town! I have been to 3 other places in town. These guys have the most clam meat in their chowder out of all the places I have been here in Newport.

This place is really nice and offers a good selection of beers. I had the pumpkin ale and it's one of the better pumpkin ales I've had. I ordered the blue cheese burger but the waitress gave me the plain burger instead. When I noticed that there wasn't any blue cheese in the burger I had to wait 10mins as she was nowhere to be found. I finally saw her in the bar area and walked over to tell her it was the wrong burger, but if she gave me some blue cheese it'd be fine. I got a bunch of crumbles which was unsatisfying and she didn't seem to care much. Go for the beer and you'll have a great time. Maybe next time I'll have a better food and waitress experience as I would have rated this place 4 stars if it wasn't for the waitress who didn't give a hoot.

Coddington Brewery was established in 1995 and has been turning out handcrafted beer on the premises ever since. I have visited here on a handful of occasions and have been generally satisfied with each trip. Located on Coddington Highway, this restaurant/brewery is quick to find and easy to get to. Serving their own beers on tap, I opted for their Blueberry Blonde brew "a golden beer with a delicate blueberry flavor and aroma" mixed with some sort of hard cider. It was a surprising but refreshing concoction that I would certainly order again on my next visit. A friend ordered the Winter Warmer which had a "pronounced malty flavor" with a figgy ending. . . .Oh bring us a figgy pudding, oh bring us a figgy pudding. . . . If this were simply a review of their beer they'd be 5 stars hands own. Throw food into the mix and their rating decreases to simply average. We started off the meal with a Spinach Dip appetizer. They give you an enormous amount of dip compared to the number of chips. This ratio must be adjusted. The waitress was kind enough to bring more chips upon request. The dip itself was tasty! I then ordered a cheeseburger and fries that turned out to be nothing to write home about. I would have liked to order sirloin tips or a pasta dish but at $16+ for these simple dishes, I opted for the cheaper meal. Bring home a Growler full of your favorite beer or join the Mug Club for discounts and special offers. I'm not sure that I would return here for food, but a trip dedicated to the bar and some appetizers would make for a decent trip!

Was not impressed with the beers or the wings. Can't speak for anything else. Two stars only because the service was decent.

I took some friends there to celebrate. There were 11 of us and when we arrived it was almost empty. The service was awful. The waitress seated us then forgot about. We waited an hour before bread and salads were brought out and this occurred after I asked to see the manager. Three dinners were sent back. Terrible food and worse service. Stay away!!!!

Help, I am not seeing the Coddington 'light' as other's have! Wait - maybe it's because I was just served runny chicken pasta, bagged salad and frozen pizza for the kiddo's! Heck, at least they admitted kids (and sat them a mere 10 feet from the bar too! I would have been kicked out of any California bar in that case! Seriously folks, this is a brewpub. Stick with the brew. The place is spacious and parking lot is big, but the only worthy action inside may be while having a pint. Don't get the munchies! Make this a first stop enroute to your downtown Newport pub crawl and get your eat on there.

Really enjoyed the lobster bisque and Reuben sandwich. My brother raves about the chili and liked the wood chuck amber cider.

I never think of this place because it's kind of off the beaten path, but we were in the mood for some pub food so we stopped in for lunch today. The decor was older looking and could have used some refreshing, but it was comfortable. We were greeted promptly by a pleasant young woman, seated in a cozy booth and our drink order was taken right away. We ordered the home-brewed root beer and it was fantastic, they also have root beer floats available! There was a full menu with a wide variety of choices and also a two-sided page of specials. My husband asked the waitress for a recommendation and she was very friendly and helpful as she explained her favorites. He finally picked the Tex-Mex burger, it was the perfect blend of toppings and done to perfection, he loved it. I ordered from the special's menu and went with a French Dip. The beef was tender, thinly sliced and delicious, it came piled high on a tasty torpedo roll ready for dipping in the au jus sauce. Both orders came with a pickle and a huge helping of golden curly fries, which were seasoned to perfection! The place was about three-quarters full when we came in so they were busy, but the food came out quickly and was nicely presented. My husband ordered a coffee at the end of the meal, it was freshly brewed and he said it was very good. We will definitely return soon to try some of their other offerings and sample some of their home-brewed beers.

What a great find! The place is cozy and dimly lit. It's a brewery, so you know there's great beer on the menu and for a reasonable price. The food is classic American fare with such staples as ribs, chicken and seafood. I had the stuffed shrimp, which were delicious. It came with curly fries, broccoli and a salad. Prices for the food are reasonable as well and the waitstaff were very friendly and efficient. Definitely worth a visit.

Lame. Particularly for a brewpub. First of all, the beers are uninteresting and uninspired. That's worrisome. Afterall, it's for good beer that one visits a brewpub. Even more worrisome is that they were offering a watermelon beer - really!! It's only downhill from there with the food. The medium rare tuna steak was well-done and bland. The fries too were bland. Skip it.

  • Andy C.

Maybe just bad luck but totally not worth the $32 w/ good tip for a single diner for a sandwich and one beer. Steer clear of the lobster roll with soggy fries. Beer was good but definitely paid for the privilege. I definitely should have read the other negative reviews. I agree that a better strategy is to eat downtown.

I stopped into the Coddington Brewery Monday night after a brutal 6 hour drive up to Newport. I wanted to grab a burger and beer before heading to the hotel and since it was on the way I figured I'd give it a try. I went in and grabbed a seat at the bar. Both bartenders were very friendly and talkative. In no time I had one of their Stout's in front of me and burger on the way. The stout was pretty good, very smooth, maybe a little too bitter, but that's splitting hairs. The burger was a decent size, well cooked and pretty flavorful. I'd definitely get it again without hesitation. All told, it was a good experience and I'll definitely be seen sitting at the bar there again in the future.

  • Jeremy B.

Stopped in after work for a few beers. Had their stout and oktoberfest. Both were very good and had nice flavor. I didn't have any food, so my rating is based solely on the beer. The bar area was really dark, but the employees were nice.

Coddington's is a brewpub made in the cookie cutter image of exactly what a traditional brewpub should be. Crisp and refreshing beer that is locally made, if not unique. Friendly wait staff that knows me ENTIRELY too well, at this point. (Seriously, unfair that there's a brewery immediately outside my place of work) Food that is very good for pub fare; fish and chips are as good as it gets, cajun steak sandwich and seasoned curly fries makes me happy on a cold winter day. Coddington's only loses a star for me due to pricing (the food isn't worth the rate they sell it at, and I believe it's menu pricing is driven by location) and the boring 99-esque environment. I prefer the dark, gloomy, fire lit taverny brewpubs.... although that may just be me. Beer selection (while very good) is limited to 6 beers, and seems to be short on supply of what I want. Overall, a great experience and consistently delicious food.

  • Chase O.

Good beers, not earth-shattering but interesting selection of nice beers from stouts, porters to IPA's etc. Atmo is nice and clean but a little dark, a little on the loud side but not a big deal. Food was good overall, apps were tasty and showed up in a timely manner same goes for the entrees, typical pub restaurant food done right, nothing special but no complaints at all. Servers were friendly and attentive. Great wings!

I went here for lunch and had a terrific lobster roll. The service was very good and I had a great lunch experience. It may be a different story at night, but for lunch, a good place to check out. Not as cheap as you might think.

After a long day of meetings, a coworker and I took the advice of some locals and took a seat at the bar here. We got there before the dinner crowd, so it was fairly quiet and the servers were very attentive. I was only going to get a beer, but I ended up also deciding on a caesar salad. Both were very good pub fare! The beer was one of their specials for the day and was raspberry-flavored (can't remember the exact name) and the caesar salad was huge, but delicious. My coworker got the beer sampler and we both enjoyed getting the descriptions of all the different flavors. Next time I'm in the area, I would definitely come back here to relax and watch some sports!

I've heard decent things about this place and as I've lived on the island my whole life I figured I should give it a shot. My two friends and I ate there last night and while it wasn't terrible, it wasn't remarkable either especially for what out bill came to. Our biggest issue was the fact that we spent $15 on drinks alone. No, not beer or any type of alcohol. We all had two sodas, and at $2.50 per soda that adds up pretty quick. We didn't know it wasn't free refills, just because they don't bring cans to the table, they bring a glass already filled. Regardless, the meal was good. We had the crab dip to start, which was served with carrot and celery sticks and chips that were thick enough to hold the dip which was nice. For entrees, my friend and I both got steak over Caesar which was good and my other friend got the fish and chips. Portions were a good size, fries were good and my friend said the fish was really good too. We finished the meal with the triple chocolate cake and the caramel apple granny, the caramel apple dish was delicious and was exactly what I wanted however the cake tasted like one of those frozen cakes but very stale. We figured the bill would be high but weren't expecting $85. The service was pretty quick for a Saturday night so we left 20%. We ended up leaving $102, which evens out to $34 a person for an alright meal with decent service. Would have been 4 stars if I felt like the amount I paid was worth it, don't think I'll ever go back.

The most common phrase you hear in a review for a brew pub is "great beer, average food". That certainly applies here, but that's not a problem for me. I love a good beer and we both really liked the ones we tried. I went with the hefeweizen and she went with the watermelon. The food wasn't anything spectacular, but the food at a typical brew pub (burgers, wings, nachos, etc.) is one of my favorite types of cuisines. A plate of average wings still beats out a plate of perfectly executed vegetables. The prices seemed to be a tick above average. $9 for buffalo wings, $8 for a salad, and $16 for chicken parmesan certainly isn't outrageous, but it is a dollar or two more than I'd want to pay at a pub. I suppose that can be attributed to being located so close to Newport. It's conveniently located not far from the highway and away from the beaches and tourists so it's not a bad place to go to start your day on the island if, like we did, you got a late start and don't arrive until lunch. I'll find my way back there at some point. At the very least I'd like to try a couple more of their beers.

Only the beer was impressive here. Sat at the bar for dinner. All three male bartenders clearly would've rather not been there, and it showed. Not very pleasant at all. Were quick to serve the beer, but hard to get attention for menus. Calamari was ok, much less in portion in comparison to when ordered here last summer. German sausage dinner - sausages cold, homemade baked beans good but cold, the very small portion of sauerkraut was tasty but would've been much better with SOME warmth to it. When my guest, an Army Colonel, asked if they give military discounts a simple no would've been fine. Instead, our Mr. no-personality server/bartender quipped with an attitude "If we did we'd be out of business, we are across from a military base!". Unimpressive food and customer service here.

There is nothing amazingly special about this place, but it does have a certain charm to it. All around the place are pictures of historic Newport and the old Navy yard. I love looking at those pictures because my husband is in the Navy and we are based in Newport right now, and I have always wondered why there are no ships. These pictures are great for reference on the history of NAVSTA Newport. The service was quick and friendly. They have an impressive selection of beers and mixed drinks! I ordered a watermelon lemonade and it was pretty good! I had two of them and I was feeling quite at ease by the end of lunch. I got the fried clams and I was surprised at the large portion. Most were whole bellies and that always rubs me the right way! Prices were decent and I will probably be back by the end of my stay in Newport.

This place is good not great. If you are going try and stick to beers and cocktails which are decently priced. The service is attentive but the food is nothing to write home about. Especially considering some of the great restaurants in the Newport area. Overall, good service, good bar scene, not so great food. Better appetizers at Chili's.

While in town for the Newport Folk Festival, we ate here twice. The first time we ate here because it was close to our hotel. The second time it was because it was one of the few places open later after the festival. I enjoyed the beers. My wife and I both ordered flights. I appreciate the progressive thinking by their offerings of Watermelon and Blueberry beers. I know these have been done before by other breweries but most locales don't have the stones to try something like this. The food is ok for me. I was a little disappointed in the lobster dishes. The lobster roll is ho-hum. The lobster mac n cheese is ho-hum. The Chorice pizza is excellent though. The Sausage and kraut platter is great too.

Not really impressed as a first timer. I expected more. I had: Irish Stout (5 stars): Dark and full bodied with a distinct coffee-like aroma. This Stout has a rich dark malt flavor with an acidic and dry-roasted bitterness in the finish. Deep ruby to black in color with a creamy head. Similar to a Guinness just lighter. Tex Mex Burger (1 star) : A Hereford burger topped with spicy chili, red onion, monterey jack and cheddar cheese. This burger is definitely spicy. I enjoyed the spiciness. Unfortunately the chili was real bland which offset the whole burger. The waitress acted like something had crawled up her ass and died. She didn't even crack a smile the whole time and seemed to hate her job. Overall I want to give them another chance. I rather go back and try their different beers. After all they are a brewing company. Maybe they should just stick to that.

The beer and root beer are good, that is where ends, do not order food, chicken parm, no, haddock, lame, ribs, unedible, pizza, rubbery, salad, funky smell. Sorry, really wanted to like it here but warning you not to bother - better off going to 99 rest. Nearby, too bad.

I Love beer my wife not so much, so being the trooper she is, we always search out the local brew pub wherever we are. We ate lunch at the bar like we usually do and were very pleased with Coddington's. I had the beer sampler not exceptional but very good, IPA being the best and blueberry blonde being my least favorite(tasted like the golden ale with some blueberries thrown in). service was excellent bar was clean with dark wood and the staff was very friendly. My wife had sangria which she said was good (maybe a little to much fruit juice) but good. Food was good also I had the but not exceptional(keep in mind this is a brewpub but if you know pub food this is good pub food). I had the Caesar chicken wrap and she had a bowl of lobster bisque. We would definitely recommend this place to anyone who is in town and looking for a brew pub.

They had me at the blue cheese stuffed burger.... AMAZING! Buffalo wings are the best around. And don't get me started on the watermelon Snake Bite! (Our clean and crisp Golden with a very subtle hint of watermelon. Garnished with a wedge of fresh watermelon it makes for a very refreshing summer beer. It's also great mixed with the Wood Chuck Cider, ask for a watermelon Snake Bite ( coddbrew.com/on_tap.html ) THE PERFECT PLACE FOR WINGS, BURGERS and BEER! I can hardly wait to see what they have in store for the fall ales. This place is a MUST!

Great selection of in-house brews, and good beer overall. I particularly liked the Golden Ale. We had pizza and fish and chips. Both satisfactory, and the service was attentive; in fact our table was pretty constantly checked for empties, etc, and we weren't bothered. Service was quiet and efficient, the best kind. One quibble is that we sat in the bar, which to us means 'no children', but apparently some adults find it appropriate to bring kids there and let them wander around. I think this is a state liquor control issue rather than a restaurant issue, but it should be said that the bar allows children, which is a negative in my view.

Surprisingly the beer was a bit meh for a brewery. The "brewery" section is just some new equipment behind glass. Food was alright. Best news is the place is quite kid friendly. The service was good and fast. Blueberry beer was disappointing compared to Newport Storm...this one was a lager with blueberries dumped in.

their brews exceeded my expectations...........I was expecting this place to be similar to BJ's with "just ok" beers and greasy food... the beers get 4 stars, (5 for their seasonal Bluberry brew) and the food gets 3. my hubby and I had Teriyaki steak tips and fish n chips; both were good, not great. I think next time I will stick to a burger and fries and focus on the beer. the sample tray is a MUST. I really would recommend just going for that.....

Coddington has a dark quintessential woody pub appeal. We randomly found this place while driving back from Newport. The building, has a real historic feel. Beer selection was decent, food was good but a bit more expensive then typical pub fare. I like bars that are busy but not overwhelming. I got the feeling it was a popular locals spot and I can see why. You can go there, have a good time with a group and still hear yourself talk. I'd gladly go back.

Stopped in here after the Newport Storm tour & it totally hit the spot. While there were quite a few people there, there were open seats at the bar. We ordered the sampler of beers, which is a good deal at 7 beers at 7oz for $12.75. They place each of the beers on their special placemat, which is helpful to identify which beer is which. I'd have to say that I really enjoyed 4 out of the 7, but a couple of them just didn't suit me. The food was pretty good, too. Hubby had the tex-mex burger, friend had the brewer's blue burger & I got the roast beast with a super delicious horseradish sauce. All of our sandwiches came with curly fries, which did not disappoint. We were all sufficiently full of good beer & good food when we left.

This is one of our favorite places to go and have a beer. There are very few places around Newport/Middletown that brew their own beer and serve great food. Coddingtons has excellent beer - their IPA is one of the best in the area and they also have a great Irish Stout and Irish Red. The service is great in the bar area and we really enjoy spending time there. Food is also great - appetizers are a great addition when watching a game or hanging out with friends. They have an excellent crab dip and great calamari.

Came here one night and I have to say that even though I'm not a beer drinker, I did enjoy the Watermelon Ale. :)

One of my husband's clients recommended this restaurant while we were staying in Newport, RI for our vacation. It should only take approximately 10 minutes travel time from downtown Newport, but we had gotten quite lost before we arrived and I have to admit, once we found it I wasn't impressed. The neighborhood seems industrious and the restaurant looks like a Bennigan's with a different color theme. We arrived early for dinner on a weekday, so it wasn't busy. Our family was seated at a table in the bar area (found that a little strange since we had our 4 year old son with us) and we had a very attentive & friendly waitress. My husband ordered the Whole Wheat Penne Pomodoro (sea scallops & plum tomatoes) and I had the baked scallops served with mashed potatoes and zucchini...OMG, soooo good! The potatoes were mashed with the skins left on and the veggies were fresh and tasty. The whole wheat pasta was cooked just right (tends to be al dente in most restaurants). Our son ordered pizza from the "half-pint" menu. Overall, they have great food, the prices are very reasonable, the atmosphere is fun & quirky...we would definitely recommend to others, especially families!

If you are staying in Newport and need to escape the crowds and padding to most menu pricing, come to this place. A spoiled NY foodie, I actually was completely surprised with how good it was. For summertime the Watermelon Ale is a winner, and I actually went for the blend with Woodchuck cider for an even more refreshing drink. My boyfriend got a stuffed lobster that was extremely tasty and very reasonably priced. I had the lobster roll which was DELICIOUS - and I am very picky about these! I frequent the North Fork of LI where these are extremely yummy! The service was great, and the quality and portion size of the food was very desirable. My cousin and his wife were with us and for an app we shared the hot crab dip which was delicious and great for sharing. Dessert was a hit as well - can't go wrong with the key lime pie or the Apple caramel concoction we had!

Service was good, beer was great (hefeweisen), food was about average for a decent brew pub; it was tasty. Wings were great though no varying level of spiciness was offered & were more mild than I prefer since I like em on the hot side. Was initially disappointed with the lack of bleu cheese on the blue burger until the waitress informed me its a stuffed bleu patty, a nice touch! Over all I'd recommend it

Really nice bar to hang out and play some pool while tasting microbrews. We each got the sampler, which was more than generous (our designated driver had to hold off about 3/4 of the way through). My favorite was the hefeweizen, but the ale was also good. The space is well laid out and nicely decorated - I enjoyed checking out the historical pictures of the island. Look forward to coming back for the food.

A friend recommended I go to this place since I was in Mass and not far. I had the blueberry and watermelon ales and they were both so good! I had one of the scallop dishes for dinner and it was good too. I wish I could say I would be back, but I don't know when I will be back in RI!

Coddington is good for get-togethers once in a while. I usually go here for lunches and work-related functions. The beers offered are a standard brewpub selection (golden ales, IPAs, stouts, reds, etc.) My favorite dish is the William Coddington Turkey Platter, a cafeteria-like plate of turkey, gravy, cranberry sauce, and mashed potatoes. I don't know why I like this plate so much, but I order it every time I eat here. The rest of the food is typical brewpub offerings (sandwiches, hamburgers, etc.)

  • Courtney M.

We came here primarily for the beer, but were blown away by how good the food was. We started off with clams casino that were perfect. We each had simple fare, I had a honey mustard chicken sandwich and my wife had a cheeseburger club (that was actually cooked correctly!!!) but it was simple fare done right, which a lot of places cant do. The beer was also very good, the best ones being the IPA, oatmeal stout, and blueberry. I didn't care for the watermelon or the blonde ale. This isn't fine dining by any means, its a brewery with brew pub food, but its good food and it won't break the bank.

Our b&b recommended this place and we figured we'd try it out rather than eat yet another meal on the main touristy strip in Newport. My bf got the sampler and got 7 beers for $14 and each was a decent size. I liked the blueberry and got a glass of that. I ordered the burger which was very good and my bf got the cajun steak sandwich. He thought it was very good and the sauce served with it was very good but could have used different bread to be able to eat it as a sandwich easier (its served open faced and he was able to make a sandwich out of most of it). We both liked the huge portion of curly fries. The service was just ok - the waitress wasn't around a lot but was friendly. Prices were average for a brewery - $8 or $9 for our sandwiches.

Brews were the draw...calamari over pasta was great. Go with the spicy sausage for a little pick me up!

This is where the Newport/Aquidneck Island locals go to eat for really good, casual, affordable food...Not to mention great beers brewed on the premises. Go for the beer sampler if ya can't decide...You'll get a 7oz. sample of each of the six beers currently on tap. If you're around in the Fall, get the Pumkin Ale....There is no better. You can take home 64oz Growlers of any of their flavors on tap as well. Join their 'Mug Club' if you'll be around for a while...Lots of perks including your own numbered mug held at the bar, discounts, and a free lunch on your birthday. The house Chili is wicked good, guy. The boneless Buffalo fingers are made with fresh chicken tenderloins and you can definitely taste the difference. The Potato Skins sampler is a favorite as well. The Nachos are great and a plentiful portion. The Calamari is always cooked well, tossed with Banana Pepper rings and served with Marinara or Hot Cherry Pepper relish (I always asked for both which they don't charge extra for). The sandwiches are all great and served with really tasty curly fries. The entrees are served with a dinner salad (the honey mustard dressing is awesome [Spicy]) and dinner rolls (A rarity these days to be included anymore). I often go with the baked stuffed Shrimp or Sole which is generously filled with traditional NE seafood cracker stuffing. Go for the Whiskey Steak if you're feeling Beefy. There's a bit of a comfort food section of the menu that includes a Turkey dinner (Awesome) with all the fixings and Shepards Pie (Huge portion for the price). The only part of their cuisine that I believe is lacking a little are their pasta dishes. They could be a litter richer, like maybe finishing them with a little butter. I do often get the blackened-Chicken Alfredo and just add some extra parm cheese. The specials are always great and usually match the season; They do an appropriate menu for Octoberfest for example. I often eat at a high-top in the bar, but will revert to the dining room when wanting something more intimate. They are able to seat a couple large tables in the bar. The ambiance is pleasant wherever you choose. The servers are always on point and attentive. All around, a fantastic restaurant and will give it 5 stars if they tweak the pasta dishes. Definitely worth the value in comparison to other restaurants on the island. For tourists, this is the best place to eat semi-close to downtown Newport where you won't have to worry about parking...It's free and they have plenty of it (Go towards the back if the front lot is full).

  • Travis D.

Wow, what a disappointment. I know servers can have bad days, but I think Raeleen just needs to find another line of work. She was grouchy, slow, and forgetful. She didn't want to be there, which made us not want to be there. That atmosphere in this place is like being at Denny's. Except Coddington Brewing had Cher music playing... so point goes to Denny's. The food did nothing to redeem the place. I'm pretty sure it is a menu defined by what Sysco has to offer. The only reason for second star is that some of the beer was pretty good, particularly the oatmeal stoudt; but even the beer pales in comparison to Coastal Extreme brewing down the street.

Over priced, rude and tasteless. sums it up well. The beer is good though nothing special, I have had bottled beer with more flavor. I ordered a blueberry beer, it was their golden beer with a few blueberries thrown in. The calamari appetizer appears to be frozen, soft, chewy, mushy and tasteless. I was about half way into the appetizer and the salad showed up. It was a full plate of chopped lettuce, nothing special, I didn't really get to enjoy it as my dinner showed up less than 2 minutes later. I ordered the swordfish special, it was supposed to be fresh George's Bank swordfish, maybe, but it was a very small piece of fish drowned in garlic and butter, so much so that the entire plate was floating in butter, the baked potato was old, probably been around since the previous day and the half cob of corn was also frozen, soft, soggy and tasteless. Over all value was very poor for what was delivered to the table. The service was OK, I had gone to the restroom before sitting down, when I arrived at the table everyone had given a drink order, the waitress was very put out because I wanted to read the beer menu before ordering, she could have come back, but instead stood by the table trying to rush my choice and making me feel very uncomfortable in the process, her body language said it all. The entire experience was rush, rush, rush. I won't be going back there at all.

I stopped in for dinner and sat at the bar since it was just me. The first bar tender gave me a menu and walked away while I looked things over. A second bartender came by a few minutes later, walked past without looking to see that I was ready to order and went about reading the paper with his back to me. When he was done with the paper about 5 minutes later he walked off. I flagged down the first bartender the next time I saw ANYONE behind the bar, which was about 5-10 minutes later. I was a little ticked about the poor service by this point. I ordered a lobster roll which came out promptly. The roll was dwarfed by the massive pile of french fries on the plate and a pickle that was laying on the lobster meat. By the way, pickle is not a flavor that I want mingling with my lobster. The lobster meat had a heavy flavor of lemon juice which totally overpowered the lobster. This is bad, and I worried that so much lemon was used because the lobster was getting old. I quickly finished because the roll was skimpy, paid, and left, not to ever return.

Decent beer, decent food and proportions. Good service as well. I like how they also have growlers. I like their Beer much better than Newport Storm and for a brewpub this place makes the cut. Food is pretty much standard american but is good and not overpriced. This place is worth a stop in Middletown

We found this place a few years ago while on vacation in Newport. Whenever we come back for a visit we make sure that Coddington is on the list, in fact this last trip we visited twice! You have to try their "blueberry" beer, it has real blueberries in it. The food is great and VERY good service. We will be back again!

Everything about this place is good: The food, the menu, the selection of fresh brewed beers. Before we moved away from Newport, my wife and I used to eat here every Friday night. Just a great all around place and I highly recommend you pop into this cozy, warm, local hang out! Staff is friendly and the beers are top notch. See for yourself!

Coddington has pretty good beers. Their IPA is nice as well as their watermelon lager, which is an interesting choice! We've had some appetizers, nothing special but decent. Service is fine. It is almost a chain-like atmosphere which I find odd, however I feel as though the interior will feel quite warm in the winter months! Overall a good place for beers and an okay destination for food!

This is one seriously good restaurant located in one of the area's best microbrewery. Entered range in the $12-15 range with a top end of $21. Burgers are excellent as is the Shepard's Pie, Calamari, and baby back ribs... Highly recommended for a nice, casual evening of great food and beer.

Came with my brother and nephew. They were vacationing from North Carolina. I've been here before several times and have always, unfortunately, had server issues. The beers? Great. The food? Just Okay, better if your just getting apps and watching the game. The service? sub par. Server said she'd give us a minute, she gave us TEN minutes (an eternity when your hungry), all while SITTING down in a corner booth talking/laughing with a customer?/boss? who was reading the paper...never even turning around to see our menus were closed and we were more then ready. No check in after she dropped the food off, of which we all wanted another round (which would have up'ped the check and her tip), she came back when all our beers were empty, asking "can I take these plates for you?" Not asking as she's clearing: can I get you all another round? And she goes and sits back down with whoever it was in the corner booth! Here we have a table of empty beer glasses & she's sitting down across the dining room. I actually got up, walked over and asked her for our check. She delivers it to the table, and goes, again, to sit back down. I had to get up & bring the check over to her with the credit card in it to run. Now if it was busy, I understand. However, looks awfully unprofessional how unobservant she was. I won't give her name, I think thats lousy, but coming from a former restaurant worker as a youth, & who tips 20-30%, I was unimpressed.

Found this one rainy night when all the other touristy places in town were a 1 hour wait. We were seated immediately and were pleasantly surprised at the quality of the food. I had the baked stuffed sole, he had a blacked chicken pasta alfredo. Everything from the salad and rolls to the woodchuck cider exceeded our expectations. The atmosphere wasn't great, and the fireplace wasn't lit, but the food made up for it. We will go back on another trip.

Okay, I am a beer snob. There, I've said it. I lived in Belgium the past year and I have been brewing it since 1991. The beer was 5 out of 10. Bland, but not offensive. Tasted better, had worse. They had their house ale, blueberry ale, watermelon ale, IPA, stout and 2 others. All of their beers were below 5% so that makes me think they have their budget well thought out and try to go low on their malt usage. The best brew was the IPA, but I like hops and it is not for everyone. I also give a nod to the blueberry beer. Now on to food. I got the Ahi Tuna sandwich and is was very, very fishy tasting. I could smell the fish when I took the bun cover off to put on my toppings. I couldn't finish it and that is unusual for me. This tells me it was not fresh. My wife tasted it and suggested I not finish it. My wife got the Reuben sandwich, which she needed to request more dressing because it was very dry and didn't have much kraut on it. Overall, she said the taste was good. Just needed more kraut and dressing, which she got. My daughter enjoyed the fish & chips. The fries were curly fries and were mediocre. We told the wait staff of the short comings, but received no feedback. Overall, the wait staff did fine. We live here and I won't go back.

The flight of beers was a generous pour so either plan to hang a while or possibly share if you have to drive. The husband and I both really likes some of their beers, especially the blueberry and the watermelon. The flight is really the best way to try out a brewery's selection. One of the best waitresses we've had on our trip so far, very friendly and attentive. She even suggested that we visit the winery down the way which was an epic suggestion! (Newport winery) Besides the flight of beers we had the lobster bisque and it was surprisingly very good! The rest of the menu was a mush-mosh of bar food (wings, burgers) a spattering of seafood items (raw clams, quinoa and shrimp, clam chowder) and interesting/odd offerings (turkey platter with all the standard thanksgiving offerings). It seems that they are maybe trying to be current with the menu since the decor of the restaurant is very 1995 - hunter green and maroon colors with brass accents. I know it is not easy but I think they could really get a good bang for their buck if they did a decor and menu overhaul. The location is not in the downtown Newport shopping area but with the Newport Storm, Tew distillery and the Newport winery all in the same general area I think Coddingtons would have the most to gain from an overhaul as they are the only ones with a full restaurant. Would definitely go back.

I wish the service would have been better! Ordered a beer lady didn't bring it until I reminded her as I got my meal. My co worker got his salad first, I had to wait for mine as it arrived with my meal even though i asked her if I could have first. The lobster roll sand which was good as well as the salad. But the service was absolutely horrible! We were there on a Monday around 2 pm with only 3 other tables, so no excuse.

I've been here several times in the last few years while visiting Newport, and I've been impressed each time. First, the food. Lots of options here: burgers, sandwiches, seafood, steaks, pizza, salads. They've got something for everyone. And something for every mood. Everything my wife and I have ever had has been good. And as a bonus, as the name suggests, it's a brewery. They make several beers. While they're not the greatest of brews (if you have a fine taste of beers), they're still pretty good. The average beer drinker will find them plenty acceptable. And for the elite beer tasters - hey, it's impressive just to get something different and better than Bud Light and Corona. I have much respect for anyone who can brew decent beer. It's a difficult craft. I'm also impressed with the overall experience. Very clean place. Good dining room. Good bar area. Good staff. Prices are reasonable. And one of my favorite things: the wait times are some of the easiest in the area. Go anywhere in downtown Newport, and a wait time of 2 hours or more is almost standard during peak dinner hours (if you can get in at all). At Coddington, I've gotten seated right away or have had short waits. It's not because it's bad food. It's because it's a few miles away from the busy part of town. You'll definitely need to drive there. It's the only place in its little neighborhood. This is a good thing - because it's kind of like a hidden gem!

First time coming here after driving by a few times. I started with cheese and bacon potato skins as an appetizer. Not really any flavor and the skins weren't really meaty. My main meal was the BBQ combo, which came with a salad, baked beans, mashed potatoes, chicken breast and 1/2 rack of pork ribs. The salad was a house salad and good. The baked beans didn't really do it. It really looked and tasted like a can of pork & beans. The mashed potatoes was okay. The chicken breast was very small and hidden under my ribs. The BBQ sauce was tasty. All in all, it was decent. Not over the top to bring me back. I'll give it a second chance, but not in a hurry to do so.

Amazing pulled pork sandwich! Even the bun is so delicious you could eat it by itself! Got it quick too! I went here for lunch and it wasn't too busy. Perfect for someone like me. Short drive from Newport. Got clams casino and calamari For apps and they were delicious. Fish and chips, baked scallops, Ahi tuna were the meals. All reasonably priced but the scallops weren't great. Everything else was good. Server was attentive and the place was nice and clean. I would say overall the prices were very low for the area. And obviously it's a brewery so lots of beer to choose from.

This place was fairly quiet for lunch time on a Saturday. The hostess was sporting a bit of an attitude also. Not a good way to start our visit. Our server did arrive promptly, with a smile. We placed our drink orders, Malbec for me and one of their brews for my husband. Our waitress was back quickly with a glass of water for just me. (????). Odd. We ordered the buffalo chicken tenders. They were a good size and tasty. The blue cheese dressing was very good. We don't normally finish the dressing when we get chicken tenders, but there wasn't a drop left this time. Our meals came with a salad and they salad was OK. I ordered the Portuguese Scallops. They were a bit weird. It was your basic baked scallops with a lemon-wine broth and bread crumbs that they then added chourico to. The lemon was overpowering and didn't mesh well with the chourico. It was an odd combination. I definitely wouldn't order this again. I had broccoli and fries on the side and both were lukewarm. My husband had the tuna, which he thought was OK, but his sides were also lukewarm. It was over $90 before tip and this meal wasn't worth that. I won't be rushing back.

After a many year lapse in visiting Coddington, the bartender remembered us. The beer was as good as I remembered. I got the sampler which consisted of generous portions of all 7 of their beers. We has many food options for trying to avoid meat. We got the bean burger and the quinoa wrap; we were very impressed with both.

It was OK, we stopped around lunch one day and I think we were only the 4th people there. It was nice that the beer was local and fresh, we sat at the bar and had some lunch which was OK but nothing special, maybe the night/evening meals were different. It was nice to take a break and get a local brew, good to go back for beer but maybe try the pulled pork someone else mentioned next time.

Decent food (the lobster roll and clam chowder were rock-solid), though more expensive than I'd have expected. The ambiance is not what I expected, either--it's a slick-looking pub microbreweries in the middle of a highway in Middletown. I was looking for a more rugged brewery experience. But they have sports and on and nice booths. The service was fine, if not particularly engaging. Also, we both got carded, which forced the SO to traipse back to our car in the parking lot (we are both well past carding age). That kinda killed momentum. The beers were only OK. Not a particularly inspiring experience, despite nothing really going wrong.

Good service can't make up for over priced pub food and below average beer. I had a flight ( taster plate )and the fish and chips. There was a lot of fish and plenty of fries, but the quality of either wasn't remarkable and certainly didn't match what I expected for the $13 price tag. The beer was equally mundane, simply missing the depth and complexity characteristic of high quality micro brews these days. While most brewery's charge significantly less for a flight to encourage customers to sample and take something home, Coddington charges $17 (essentially the same price as 3 pints) for their sample tray of beers that might as well be your college buddies home brew. I will say that the service was great, everyone we interacted with was happy and helpful, but the price was just not worth the experience in the end.

Coddington Brewery probably would be a lot more enticing if they were in a different location...so it isn't necessarily the first place you think of going. It has a casual atmosphere, like many other typical breweries. It is cozy and comfortable. The food is subpar, with basic bar food, and nothing really standing out on the menu. Every time I have gone, I have "settled" for chicken fingers, as nothing else is really appealing on the menu. To be honest, the Chicken FIngers are not that great. 3 stars- 1 for convenience, 1 for good service, and 1 for atmosphere.... lacking on the wow factor, and the food.

Overpriced food.. Just ok.. $60 is too much for lunch IMO! Probably won't be back nor recommend to friends, which is sad because we are stationed here until 2018. Really could use a facelift in service and pricing to stay competitive. Although I'm assuming most customers come for the brews and not so much the menu.

It's a great place to meet friends and family ! You can enjoy watching the game at the bar on play a little pool. Known for there wings and buffalo chicken. The waitstaff are very attentive. My favorite is the Caesar calamari salad. Never a wait. plenty of parking.

As stated that wings and blue cheese are best in town. The beer is cold and tasty. The place is a great place to escape the crazy downtown .
