Took three disappointments in a row but im updating my review. I ordered nime chow and got white iceberg lettuce and plain rice noodles inside. Omg. Any soup ordered will taste the same with canned veg. Any noodles ordered will taste the same with canned veg. Used to have fresh veg and delightful clean tasting complex sauces. All gone. They make a decent fried wonton. Decent pork spare ribs. Anything fried and meat based and you are prob ok.

Do yourself a favor and flip all the way to the back of the menu with the options only written in Chinese. The Crock Pot dishes are delicious yet simply prepared. The flounder crock pot with ginger and scallions was so good! I would have loved some snow peas thrown in there maybe though. Next time I'm getting the Tofu and Vegetables which sounded amazing. My husband really enjoyed the Lamb and Mushroom crock pot, too. Service is efficient and friendly and we had a lovely time discussing language translations between Chinese and English with our server.

After much trial and error with really bad Chinese food, I feel like I have come home to some of the best and most authentic presentations in this small state. I also learned that many restaurants are so afraid of customer backlash against there wonderful traditional options that the have secret menus for a select few. Red Ginger has such a menu, which they dub the "pink" menu. Using the app "beyond menu" I have successfully uncovered a surprising array of new options. This Cantonese restaurant delivers fresh and tasty meals which do not disappoint. If you eat in, there are coupons you can utilize. Highly recommend. My faves are salt and pepper calamari, ma po tofu, and yang chow fried rice (white vs. brown colored rice). Nice stop if in the area. The surrounding areas and building exterior look pretty slummy, but the interior is surprisingly nice. Stop in and look at both menus, if you dare!

The last two times I've gotten Red Ginger it has been great!!! Fast delivery, good lo mein, rangoons, egg rolls, everything. I need to try more diverse and interesting things on the menu, I always order the boring, fat American items.

Any place that puts emphasis on remembering my name when I come back is alright in my book. They have typical American Chinese food, however, the pink menu is very good with authentic Chinese cuisine. The owner is one of the nicest people I have ever met in a restaurant establishment. Food gets 4 stars and the customer service gets the extra star.

I order from here about once a month and only had one complaint. The delivery is very fast and the food arrives piping hot. I usually get general tso's chicken with lo mein and rice to split with a friend. It's more than enough food for one person, and I've always had left overs for days! I've only been inside the restaurant a couple times to pick up an order I called in. The dining area looks clean and tidy and the woman who helped us was very friendly!

I don't know what is up with this place lately. I used to eat here all the time and never had an issue, but my last few orders have been extremely disappointing. Tonight I wasn't feeling well so I ordered some hot & sour soup and general tso's chicken for takeout. I was hoping for some spicy dishes to clear out my sinuses.... neither was spicy at all like they have been in the past. The soup was just not good at all; not "hot," no flavor and no fresh ingredients whatsoever. The chicken was all globbed together with general tso's gunk to the point where I couldn't even pull the pieces apart. The broccoli that is came with was too tough to chew, and the rice was dry and molded to the container. This is the closest Chinese place to my house... but I'm definitely switching to someplace else as my default.

Small, unassuming little place on Killingly Street. Bigger on the inside than it looks. Super friendly owners and waitstaff. Face it Folks - even if Asian Cuisine is not your "go to" weekly, we all get that craving from time to time - because when it's done right - it's amazing! Red Ginger delivers. From their soups, apps (fried dumplings, crab rangoons) you die!! On to entrees. Lo Mein, General's, Chow Mein and galore! Everything is so fresh and tasty - not your run of the mill Asian cuisine. Check out the Pink Menu. If you don't know what I mean, then you better check it out! And they take reservations. Also, they send good coupons in the Val-Pak Coupon envelope that we get in the mail that we all throw away!!!!!!!

Easily the best Chinese food in the area. Large, expansive menu with great affordable prices. The food comes out quick and is always delicious. Nothing but great things to say about this place.

  • T K.

Bottom line: gotta love the dual menu - authentic Chinese and Chinese take-out food. Be brave. Go for the traditional food! Solid Chinese food for when I'm craving some home-style cooking! They have some classic dishes, like whole tilapia, ma pou tofu, baby bok choy, grilled eggplant, etc. A bit oily for my liking, but the flavor is pretty on-point. Great price point definitely ensures return trips.

Wow! I am so surprised by how good this place was. It looks sketchy on the outside, but don't let that stop you- the food is awesome. I recently ordered a plethora of yummies from here and was not disappointed. I strongly recommend the sweat and sour chicken- so good! Prices are reasonable and service is quick. Also they have a lunch buffet for $7.50.

Southern Chinese food. Try chicken and duck, and fish.

  • Ray C.

Easily the most authentic Chinese place in the Providence area. Traditional cantonese cuisine with a bit of south eastern Chinese twist. The owner is always out talking with the customers and you feel very welcomed. And to the guy who wrote "very authentic except for the msg", that is an oxymoron in itself. Most Chinese food has plenty of msg, and it's been that way forever.

Despite other townies rave reviews of this place, I wasn't all that impressed. I didn't think the place was gross or sucked, but I've just experienced better before. The prices were a bit on the steep side, and the food was just OK. This place does get busy and parking can be an issue at times, as it is in a plaza. Staff was friendly and service was quick.

Recently came for some chinese fix. While I think this used to be the best in town, the quality has gone downhill a bit the past year. We ordered a bunch of veggie dishes off the chinese menu (peapod leaves, eggplant crockpot, HK veggies) and all came out quickly and were fairly tasty. They were a bit too greasy for my liking, but all in all it was a quality affordable meal.

Authentic Cantonese cuisine, arguably the best in RI and the most memorable and reasonably priced Cantonese dinner I've had on the east coast. We ordered the house special chicken, lamb stew clay pot, and a killer pork dish w/ taro. Everything was delicious and you won't be disappointed. Lastly, the service was great!

Been here a few times and got take out. On my recent trip I came with some co workers for lunch to see about getting a first hand experience on a Friday close to noon. The place looks very clean and organized. Definitely a step up from the typical chinese take out places. What attracted me to this place is the "authentic menu" written half in Chinese and English which offered Chow Fun and Jelly Fish and all sorts of not typical items associated with Chinese take out. Any who my favorite thing out of the whole place so far has been the West Lake Beef Soup. Very flavorful and filling and i probably could've just had that and been satisfied. I was a bit disappointed in the soup dumplings which had virtually no soup but at least the waitress admitted that it probably can't compare to the places in Chinatown NY. The scallion pancakes were more doughy then what I expected. They should have been more crispy and flatter but at least there was a decent amount for the price. My salted fish and chicken fried rice meal was quite good so it redeemed this otherwise lackluster meal. My co-workers lunch specials were the Sweet & Sour Chicken and my god these looked like oversized dough balls. Not your average lightly battered fried chicken. Our initial waiter seemed a bit new to the restaurant so he kindve got confused when I ordered off the other menu versus the regular one. Thankfully another waitress took over and she didn't have a problem correcting the order. Plus she spoke cantonese so that worked out well for me. For the price of the lunch specials they're pretty good and matches what you expect. I took the chance and went with the more expensive meal and got a so-so result. Still I would still come back to this place as they offered a $7.95 buffet which doesn't sound too bad. Plus West Lake Beef soup isn't offered everywhere.

Have not been here for quite a while. We had the lobster with ginger & scallion...delicious! As good as one could get in Chinatown NY or Boston. Fresh and meaty...they use a 2.5 lb lobster... Had the Chinese New Year special fried rice ...wow...tasty! We also tried their Lamb Stew in Clay Pot...again did not disappoint. This is as good as I had it in China...

  • John M.

Very clean tasting food. Try the peking duck, ginger scallion fried rice, tom yum and sweet and sour soups. General tsos chicken is light and flavorful with huge pieces of chicken. Exceptionally friendly and attentive staff. Great prices. Solid experience from start to finish!

RED GINGER of Atwood av Johnston was a long time favorites when it came to my choice for Chinese food. Sadly, something has gone wrong. After a second "take-out"since since March, I have to report this restaurant has gone down the drain. The food was bland mush. It was made worse by mixing up the order; causing Linda to drive back to Johnston for a "shit apology" ( life imitates Larry David) Linda then exchanged one order of mush for another order of mush.

I was introduced to Red Ginger in my college days (circa 2003ish) by my Asian friends, who swore this was the best and most authentic Chinese around. They were right... then. I have gone back and introduced many to this Killingly Street treasure in the years since. In the last 5 or so years, I definitely noticed a slight decrease in quality; it just seemed more shortcuts were being taken. However, it was still good, and definitely one of the best I could find, so I continued to go there and recommend it. I went back last night for the first time in about a year (to introduce someone new), and was extremely disappointed. Not that the food was bad... it was edible and OK... but that was about it. Nothing made this stand out. My boyfriend and I wanted spicy so I ordered the General Tso's (used to be the best around) and he ordered a steak dish with a "Spicy Honey Sauce." Neither had a BIT of spicy, and both were supposed to be. The chicken from the GT's, although cooked to the proper temp, almost seemed to taste like it came out of a box. I thought it used to be served with whole Thai Chilies (which would have definitely been spicy), and they were nowhere to be seen. The spicy honey was too sweet and not spicy at all. The beef had an odd texture. The egg drop soup tasted heavily of MSG. After being an advocate for Red Ginger for about 10 years, I think this was my final straw. It has now joined the ranks of any "OK" Chinese restaurant around. Hopefully someone can come around to knock my socks off in the Chinese food arena again soon.

Awesome Chinese restaurant with great service and very reasonably priced. We come here every time we are back in ri visiting my family and we are never disappointed. All of their eggplant dishes are great as is their chow mein. Although I've never tried it they have a drink called the Mongolian mind blower which has 10 different liquors.

If you don't have time to drive to Chinatown in Boston, this place is as good as it gets in southern New England. I've been going there for years now, and the food has never failed to impress me. They used to have two separate menus: one with authentic Chinese cuisine and a second with Americanized fried junk that the rubes think is Chinese. I've always ordered from the first, and my Asian friends heartily recommend it as well. Recently, they've expanded to a second unit in their plaza, taking over a former karate dojo, and they combined their food offerings to a single menu. The bonafide Chinese menu items still stand out, and the staff is very helpful if you want to try something healthy and new.

This place used to be fairly authentic (except for MSG in most of their dishes) and very exceptional in both the friendliness of the wait staff, and when placing orders. Unfortunately since about late 2007 they got a new cook, or changed suppliers, something that tampers with the food quality. Now it is absolutely unbearable and I do not recommend anyone go there any longer, a sad development for a formerly good restaurant

I love Red Ginger! It is the best! It is a great spot for super delicious Chinese food!!! If you want authentic Chinese this is your place ! But also - the "Chinese takeout" food is so delicious too. It has a really cute and cozy atmosphere and the service is so fantastic. Everyone is so friendly and nice. I love the Chow mien- it's a delicious dish !! Get it! I love the crunchy noodles. RG is the best!! If you are nearby - be sure to try it!

  • Jon A.

Good restaurant overall, but where it really shines is their "Pink Menu" of real Chinese food, not the Americanized version. Anything I've had off of it has been absolutely delicious. One tip is that ordering off the "Pink" menu over the phone can be difficult because the names in the computer are different than the menu, but it is worth the difficulty or extra time ordering when you get there.

  • Rob K.

As good as you are going to get in RI for authentic Chinese. They have two menus; the one most people get when they go into a Chinese restaurant and the one they give the Chinese when they go into a Chinese restaurant, aka the 'Pink Menu'. We're talking garlic seasoned eggplant and pork in a ceramic crock with white rice, Ma Po Tofu, satay beef chow fun...all off the Pink Menu. The egg rolls are crispy fried to order, steamed dumplings are flavorful and handmade, wanton soup is filled with lots of stock, wontons, sliced pork, cabbage and bok choy. the hot and sour soup is one of my favorite on either coast Perfect place for the purist and the old standby dishes everyone knows about. Looks are deceiving as it is in a plaza on Killingly St but when you walk in the place, it is a world apart from the noise and traffic just outdoors. 5 stars!

This place has got the best lunch time special around. For $6.50 you get a main item, plus a choice of either plain or fried rice, choice of Egg Roll or Crab Rangoon, choice of Egg Drop or Hot and Sour Soup. And when you get the plate it's loaded with food. I had the Orange Flavored Chicken the other day, and unlike most Cantonese restaurants which use frozen pre-coated pieces of chicken, you could tell these were made fresh to order. With the results being a crispy coating that was tossed adequately with the spicy orange sauce and not a hint of mushiness.

Can't complain - food is always good. Came for lunch early Saturday with my sister. The only problem is it's located in a small strip on a busy street with other store fronts with limited parking so parking can be a hassle. We ordered the chicken corn soup, not too many places make this so we always get it when we come. Nice velvety texture full of corn and chicken bits..yum. For entrees, we had the Red Ginger Special Chow Mein and the Salty Squid/Shrimp combo. The Chow Mein is our usual here - done just right, crunchy veggies, nice combo of meats poured over a bed of crispy noodles that soften over time. The salty squid/shrimp wasn't what we were expecting, thought it was going to be a lighter not so floury batter but still tasty enough with a little kick. We were the only ones in there and my 2 yr old nephew was a bit angsty but they were very accommodating - service was great! Nothing calms down a 2 yr old like a free fortune cookie, lol.

Not sure why this place has such a great average review. We picked up an order of the Sweet & Sour chicken, General Sao chicken, Vegetable LoMein, and Hot/spicy chicken wings. The chicken used in the Sweet & Sour was very stringy. The General Sao was made with dark meat, not white, and was also fatty. Vegetable LoMein was just "OK". And the spicy chicken wings were also just "OK". We actually threw out all the leftovers and didn't even bother keeping them because we knew we would not eat any of it. We will never order from there again, it was a waste of money.

Excellent authentic Chinese food. The menu is just like any other Chinese restaurant, it has all the basics chow mein, general tsaos chicken, egg rolls, combo plates etc... But there is also an authentic Chinese menu! This is usually where I order my food. I order anything from fish to stir fried beef and mix chinese vegs (I love Chinese broccoli). The restaurant inside is very cozy and cute, very clean and the staff is always very friendly. Sometimes there is a little bit of a language barrier, and it can be hard to understand certain servers, but there is always someone else around to help. My husband has a severe legume allergy. So he can't have string beans, pea pods, nuts, tofu etc.. And we have never had a problem. Their take out comes out in a timely fashion and they also deliver. Although I've never had food delivered because we are about 3 mins away. I have seen take out food come out of the kitchen though and usually deliveries are put in a portable hot bag so I am sure the food stays as hot as possible.

Went back this week with some friends and had a good meal. The restaurant was pretty busy for Friday night but the service was decent. Here's some feedback on our food.. Chicken Corn Soup (8/10) nicely done, thick, chunky and seasoned well. The menu item for 2 can feed 2-4 depending on how many bowls you want to have. Crispy Chicken Wings (8/10) they were very crispy and hot. We asked for hot mustard and duck sauce and made a nice paste to dip them in. Scallion Pancakes (2/10) Not good. Small order, doughy on the inside, almost undercooked. The edges were not crispy and not flavorful. The worst thing I have gotten at this place. Not to be ordered again. Jumbo Shrimp with Peapods (7/10) The flavors were great, but the complain was that there were only a few shrimp in the whole dish.....95% peapods...5% shrimp. Sesame Chicken (8/10) Many crispy chunks of white meat chicken. Not too much batter, lots of sesame seeds sprinkled on top. Sauce was a bit too sweet for me, but very good. Pork Chop with Black pepper sauce (9/10). Boneless pieces of pork chop, well marinated with a spicy pepper sauce, stir fried with onions and peppers. Delish ! Overall a solid option not too far from Providence.

I'm always on the look out for some authentic Cantonese Chinese food in the area. I have been making my way up to Boston for the most part until some of my friends suggested that I try out "Red Ginger." Yes, they have 2 menus. One with the moogoo gai pan and the other with the west lake beef soup! Red Ginger is tucked away in Johnston which is really only about 10 minutes outside of Providence (most of you travel at least 10 min to get to another place within Providence!). Situated in a strip mall of sorts, you can easily miss it as you come off the freeway. When you walk inside, you'll see that there is plenty of places to sit and can hold large parties of people. Both menus are actually located in one booklet so flip to the back if you want the authentic stuff. Many people go here for their lunch. It's $7 if you can find something you like! Otherwise, you can order from the back menu at any time of the day. That have great cha siu, roast duck and west lake beef soup. Their salt and pepper pork is not the best but it isn't that bad either. They have an array of other foods that I wanted to try but between two people, I couldn't justify eating $60 worth of foods! They take credit cards but not american express. They also speak both Mandarin and Cantonese and can deliver within a mile of their restaurant. Come by and try! I'll have to go back and branch out and give the other items a taste ;)

Quick delivery. Good tasting Chinese food. Scallion pancake a little too doughy, but still tasty.

Easily the best Chinese food in the area. Large, expansive menu with great affordable prices. The food comes out quick and is always delicious. Nothing but great things to say about this place.

5 stars!

The food here is always fresh and tasty. The staff is always great. Now that they have added a lunch buffet everyday for only $7.50 it is hard to beat.

Food quality has been better the last few orders. Just be careful what you order, I'll ask for the same dish 3 times and receive something different every time!

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
