Wow! Caffe Itri has one of the most defined decors among Italian restaurants I have been to! The neighborhood is surrounded by Italian restaurants competing among each other in terms of outdoor/indoor designs. I asked the manager who designed the restaurant (newly renovated) and he said that the owner is in construction business. No wonder it is outstanding! Design is fancy but not overly done unlike some restaurants. The outdoor seating is suitable for romantic dates, birthdays, and family gatherings. It is a combination of light mood, fresh air, nice umbrellas, music, and good food!! I ordered Penne pasta which I didn't finish because serving is huge. We started with Smelts fritti which is a fried fish dish. Not a big deal actually but service was professional and Anthony, our server, surely knows what he is serving. He offered to get me a complimentary drink which I refused because I am not much of a drinker but I was shocked when he didn't charge me with the desserts!! He basically complimented the desserts instead :) Next is the housemade roasted bell pepper which was cooked just right. I expected that it will be soggy but it turned out fine. My friend also ordered chicken sortellini which is topped with mozarella cheese with tomato sauce. Sauce was so tasty and obviously just did not come from canned tomato juice. This is a hidden gem in Cranston neighborhood. Will be back to try some more!

Great ambience, absolutely love the renovation. The bar is three-time bigger then before. Food is absolutely delicious, a true classic Italian kitchen. Everything is fresh and made to order. Fresh pasta, grill pizza, and made to order sauce truly makes this place a true Rhode Island hidden gem.

This is a quiet, good Italian food, great service restaurant. We sat behind the bar area in an outside but covered extension to the dinning area. Cute little twinkling lights are nicely placed throughout and soft music plays. Wearing jeans is fine for a relaxing evening, this is not a fancy establishment. We ordered a steak special. The steak was cooked perfectly. It was seasoned well and everyone loved it, much sharing was had! Our server was friendly and turned up the heat for us with no problems as we were one of the first for dinner.

Being in the restaurant business, it is often difficult to enjoy a dining experience. There are literally a handful of restaurants in the state we enjoy. Caffe Itri has quickly become a favorite. The owner, Greg, leads by example, and you can feel his attention to detail everywhere you turn. Celebrating their 25th year, they have accomplished so much while always staying true to their passion and vision. We just had a gathering with family and friends on his beautiful patio. Everything was delicious. The service was pure perfect. The atmosphere and music were just what the dr ordered. Cheers to Greg and his team for an amazing experience every time. We truly appreciate the effort, time, focus, dedication and attention it takes to create an experience your guests enjoy. Thank you!

We had an excellent dining experience tonight due to the best waiter ever, Jason . My wife has numerous dietary restrictions and he went above and beyond to ensure she had a wonderful meal within her limitations. Food at cafe itri is always fresh and made to order making it easy for people with restrictions to enjoy a delicious meal!

I've been going to Caffe Itri for over 20 years, but for some reason it'd fallen out of my wife and my rotation of restaurants. In all the time we've been coming, we've never been disappointed, and in fact, one of our favorite pizzas to make at home (pesto, prosciutto, fresh tomatoes, and fontina) is our attempt to replicate a grilled pizza we had here years ago. We visited again recently and are very pleased to say that Caffe Itri is as great as its always been. The genre here is authentic, moderately priced Italian, and Caffe Itri nails it. It's not fancy or tricked up, just fresh, genuine, perfectly prepared and executed Tuscan food. We started with the fried calamari and beet salad. The calamari was perfect, crispy on the outside and perfectly tender on the inside. The beet salad is a pretty simple one, but great ingredients and execution add up to a wonderful, delicious dish. The pesto grilled pizza was as terrific as we remembered. My kids love carbonara and Italian sausage, to they got these 2 dishes. My wife got the seafood risotto and I got the chicken piccata, both of which were perfect. All the seafood was tender and sweet, and my piccata was fork tender, with a spot on mix of zingy lemon and salty capers and olives. All our dishes had the perfect balance of richness but not heaviness. If I could give half stars, I think Caffe Itri would be four and half stars. Reasonably priced, Italian comfort food doesn't get better than this.

Went here with a large party for Dinner Food was really good, Fresh, Authentic Italian Food and the staff was very goof and seemed to really care about our service. The freshly made pasta 2as outstsnding and the chicken parm which i gadge most Italian resturants on was very good. Only gave it 4 stars due to only being able to have the Home made pasta if you got a full order not just as the pasta with your meal. It was a bit pricey but you get what u pay for.... i will go back

Caffe Itri is located in what's known as the Knightsville section of Cranston. This is an area where at the turn of the last century many Italian immigrants started to arrive from the small village of Itri (south of Rome in the Lazio region) and made it a second home. My maternal grandparents ended up coming here as very young adults, They met each other in Knightsville, married and then farmed while raising a large family. There are countless other stories just like this to be found here. The area has changed dramatically over the years from rural to Providence out-post but there are still many descendents living here with lots of pride about their history. As a result there are several very good Italian restaurants around. Caffe Itri has been a fixture for at least 20 years and while I don't eat here often, I always enjoy myself when I do. I look forward to visits. I was here a few days ago with a dear aunt and uncle and two cousins. While there's now a lovely outdoor patio where I look forward to dining another time, we opted to sit inside to enjoy the A.C. because it was a very steamy night. We started with one of the grilled pizzas as an appetizer. The pizzas here are made as I prefer them which is with a very thin crust and grilled not baked until the bottom is crisp and the tomato sauce bubbles. Do order one while here. In fact, you really could make a meal out of a couple of these pizzas and a pitcher of the delicious red sangria. For my main, I got a penne dish with eggplant. It was smoky and delicious but perhaps a bit heavy for such a hot summer night. That didn't stop me from digging in although I did have plenty of leftovers. The portions here tend to be hefty. My cousins both got one of the evening specials which was a tilapia dish which they enjoyed. My aunt got a salad and clam zuppa which was so soupy and delicious it required a bib. My uncle got an argula salad and a pasta dish. I know a big part of my enjoyment that night came from being with my family with whom I always have such a great time no matter what we're doing. Lots of laughs with good company will elevate any experience. But Caffe Itri on its own merit is well worth a visit if you're in the area. Mangia!!

Awful. The dish was too spicy to eat. When we brought it to the managers attention, her comment...yes, some of the cooks make that way to spicy. Next time tell them not to!!!

It really pains me to write this, as my family has been going here for years and we have never had an issue with the service. I don't know if it is due to the expansion that they had to hire additional wait staff or what, but went last Sat nite for dinner and the service was absolutely horrible- screwed up orders; tried to clear dishes while we were still eating; had to ask for additional bread and water refills more then twice before they came. Hope this is just growing pains. Thankfully the food is still top notch

We had wine, appetizers and shared a dish there tonight. Everything was superb, from the service to the food to the wine to the atmosphere. Anyone who gives this place a bad review is obviously another close-by restaurant owner who wants their business or a tasteless jerk who doesn't understand good food. My wife and I loved it. The calamari was excellent. We shared a vegetable and shrimp dish that I considered one of the best I've had. I recommend Cafe Itri to everyone. You'll love the place.

Ambience is great for a romantic date. Calamari was excellent but overall the food was just average (based on the veal parm and the pasta dish with added grilled chicken). Service was very slow and when my pasta dish didn't come with the chicken I had asked for the waitress said they had paged her and she would be back with it. Basically it was a piece of unsliced chicken on a plate so it wasn't prepared with the dish and tasted bland.

I don't understand the bad reviews. The food we just ate was exquisite. We agreed it was the best calamari ever. Also had A grilled vegetable dish with Grilled shrimp. It was the best I've ever had. I can't tell you how many times if get something grilled and it tastes like funk. Obviously they clean their grilles properly. Also, since the last time we have been it has been renovated. A new bar which we ate at. Just beautiful. Of course the snow is deep but the outdoor patio is definitely something we'll check out once the snow is gone.all I can think is owners from the nearby restaurants are writing bad reviews.

Love this place!! Saw the new renovations tonight for the first time and the place looked gorgeous. High ceilings, full bar with a couple of tv sets. Food was excellent! Had several of the appetizers, but my favorite was the eggplant dish. For my meal I had the veal with lemon & capers, which was delicious! Can't wait for the summer when the new patio opens.

Awful food ... zERO seasoning used (pasta was also overlooked and under salted..) I had the carbonara and they couldn't even be bothered to cook the pancetta that was in it - gross! My boyfriend had the veal scaloppine, and it was limp and lifeless. Also, since when do cannellini beans and veal go together? Cheap cheap cheap! And to make matters so much worse, we waited over an hour to get our food. It took them half an hour to seat us. Complete waste of a night. Totally disappointed and will not be going back.

Heard that this was really phenom. fresh, and homemade style Italian. Last night was my first visit there. Within a stone's throw from Marchetti's, in the Little Italy section of Knightsville. Parking was good, the restaurant is on the smaller side, with so so decor, and uncomfortable chairs. The menu was extensive, with prices on the higher side. I missed it, but apparently there is a blurb on the menu about the food taking longer due to the fresh preparation that goes into each dish. I believe this to be true. Tried the Caprese salad, it was served with gritty pesto-wash your basil! The bread basket and olive oil were standard. I got a baked penne w/Bolognese sauce that was on special, it was great, but there was too much food. It was the size of a casserole I'd make at home. The pasta tasted like homemade to me. Only real downside is that we were overcharged by about $4. I politely asked the server about it, and it was fixed in a jiffy. I'll go back someday for bar and pizza only. Oh, and the service was extermely good.

I live right down the street to I have really gotten a chance to try everything. I just received notice in the mail that they will be doing an expansion - hope it looks good because they haven't fixed thier sign that fell during the storm. Anyway the pizza is good if you just get chicken, roasted red peppers and fresh mozzarella with a balsamic glaze with no red sauce. The sangria is very good but very expensive. The seafood risotto is also very good. Thats about it. The interior looks like garbage and so does the website. Overall if it were cheaper I would go much more often but for the money its just not that good.

I brought my family, with two young children, for dinner in January 2010. We all agreed that our meals were fantastic. Great appetizers, and wonderful homemade, fresh pasta dishes. My wife is a vegetarian, and there were plenty of great choices for her as well. In fact, we were impressed by the range of delicious options on the menus and daily specials. The ambience is very nice inside, it is a family-run and very friendly business, and the service was EXCELLENT. Very attentive wait staff who seemed to really care that we had a nice evening. We eat Italian food quite often, and this restaurant is now up pretty high in our rankings. We plan to return regularly.

Tried Caffe Itri for the first time Saturday and we won't be back. It isn't the food, since that was good (especially considering that the prices are low compared to other area restaurants). No, the reason I won't go anymore is the service. For starters, after being seated at the outside patio, the waitress comes to the table and says, "Do you want something to drink?" No greeting, nothing. When we tell her that we'll need a second to look at the drink menu and wine list she says... nothing. She just walks away. When she comes back she asks, "Ready?". We give our drink order and she just stands there looking at us. After realizing that she's waiting for us to give our dinner order I tell her that we're going to need some time to think about what we want and ask if there are any specials. Her answer? A single, "No". And again, she departs without another word. The rest of the evening was much of the same. Non-attentive service with a pouty expression and a piss-poor attitude. If I leave a restaurant with the distinct feeling that I have somehow inconvenienced the server (my dinner date felt the same way), then something is clearly wrong. Judging by the amount of empty tables on a Saturday night I'd say that I'm not the only person to notice.

I have been eating at this restaurant for almost ten years and it has always been good. They offer the Italian classics and there own Italian dishes. They have large lunch and dinner menus and prices are what you would expect of the area (very fair). My mother and I always split the warmed beat salad that comes with baked beats, goat cheese, and candied walnuts. For an entree I usually get the rigatoni chicken. I have never had dessert here.

Love the house roasted peppers. Large, well-priced wine list. The gorgonzola sauce will clog your arteries but it's so good you won't care. "Meh" ambiance.

Caffe Itri came highly recommended from a friend of my wife. And it was as good as we were told. The location, decor and ambiance was very nice. The food was excellent. We both got the Pappardelle Carbonara and it was AMAZING. We ended the meal by sharing the Creme Brulee and had some Cappuccino's. We will be returning to Caffe Itri.

Caffe Itri is the one place I CRAVE when I'm away from home. The food is just that awesome- consistently good, authentic dishes on par with what would be served in the real Itri. Aside from Al Forno, Caffé Itri is the one place in the state that I can go to again and again and find little to nothing wrong with any part of the experience...and it's cheap! The service is always friendly, attentive, and lets you enjoy your food in peace. On an aside, the restaurant itself is always clean and well maintained, and from my glares into the kitchen, that seems to be spotless as well. The food- Always amazing! The pastas, especially the gnocchi with gorgonzola (the white sauce not the one with gorg&red) or fusilli chicken asparagus, are fresh, cooked to perfection, and delicious. And how could I forget about the pink vodka sauce! I have searched far and wide for the BEST pink vodka dish, and Caffe Itri remains at the top. Every time I order, I ask for extra sauce (seriously, you could drink this stuff it's so good). Pizzas are flavorful, perfectly crunchy on the bottom, and not too thick. The marsala, piccata and saltimbocca chicken or veal dishes are also excellent and accompanied by delicious mashed potatoes and fresh grilled vegetables. Value- The lunch menu is dirt cheap, and dinner is also cheap considering the larger portions. For example, with the chicken piccatta you will get two cutlets, a heaping piled of mashed, and several huge pieces of grilled vegetables (onions, peppers, carrots, zucchini). That said, quality is not sacrificed for quantity - you get a high amount of both! Please, do yourself a favor and check this place out!!!

Caffe Itri is well liked in the local community, we thought we would give it a shot and overall we were disappointed. The service has been great the few times we have gone there. Our meals on the other hand were average. We enjoyed the mussel and pizza appetizer but our main pasta dishes were disappointing. RI has so many great italian restaurants that this is one we will skip going forward.

I came here on a Friday night with my mom. The restaurant was busy but we were the second party in line. My mom is 82 years old. We stood for more than 10 minutes watching the person who we were told by the other patrons in line was the hostess pour drinks and talk to people working at the bar. Not once did she come over to ask us or anyone else how many we were or to let us know how long a wait we would have. Being that we were 15 feet from the bar it was not like no one knew we were there. Finally we walked out and went to Antonio's up the street where we were promptly greeted and had a very good meal. I guess I can scratch Caffe Itri from my to try list! My mother went back with some friends a year and a half later and had a great experience, so I am giving the place the benefit of the doubt that they cleaned up their act!

Don't listen to these people that gave less than 4 stars. This is a classic Italian restaurant in the heart of a classic Italian neighborhood. Great wine list, recognized by Wine Spectator, and traditional Italian servers. You can tell it is family owned. Props on the vacuum wine system so no wine by the glass bottle goes to waste! Get anything with Gorgonzola on it. The gnocchi also stands out. Say "Grazie, Ciao" and shake their hands. Prego! I'd give this one five stars if the gals answering the phone were a little less curt, maybe that's the Minnesota Nice talking.

I live in Manhattan and let me tell you - you can't find quality, affordable Italian food there like you can find in RI. So every time I come home to visit mom and dad I need to stop in and get some! Cafe itri is one of my favorites. They have a wide variety of dishes and I have never been disappointed in any of them. Tonight I went with a group of people and ordered a bunch of different dishes to share. The lobster ravioli was my favorite but I also loved penne itri and veal piccata. Honestly, you really can't go wrong with anything here. Great restaurant and affordable (why do they have $$$?).

Took my son for his sixteenth...the waiter was superb..detected that I like to explore wines and made suggestions and gave me some tastings...built a great rapport with us...food is delicious and authentic to the region

We were quite unimpressed with the dinner we recently ordered to go. They should be embarrassed to serve a dinner portion of their eggplant parm like the one we received. It was two paper thin slices of eggplant for $15 on penne, really no eggplant! We will not order again and eat at this restaurant if that is what they think of their customers hard earned money. Many great restaurants are happy to serve more generous portions at a reasonable price but not Cafe Itri, take your money and business elsewhere.

Haven't been here in years so I decided to give it a try. Now I know why it isn't a place that i ever think about going to. Nothing about the meal was memorable! The waitstaff was great but the food was just bland! Not impressed and not planning on going back anytime soon!

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
