This is not the fanciest Mexican food place that I've been to, but I absolutely love it. The food is amazing, and everyone I've brought with me has loved it. The service is fast, the food is delicious, and the prices are very reasonable, plus, free chip and salsa, what more could you want?! It doesn't look like much from the outside, but I assure you, it's worth going to.

I have eaten at Rey Azteca at least 2 dozen times for a reason! Their food is fresh, fast and delicious. Beginning with the bottomless chips and salsa placed on every table (both are yummy) and with every entree I have tried, all is delish. I have eaten here with at least 6 different dining companions, most frequently in a party of 2, but also several times as a party of 4. Just as good each time on food and service for all of us. Prices are reasonable, and portions sizes are good to generous. This is a casual BYOB, and the staff is very welcoming and solicitous. Highly recommend it if you like well-priced, homemade Mexican food and fast service.

Authentic is not the word I would use to describe this restaurant. I mean, there is a bottle of ketchup on every table. You have to ask for hot sauce. The pork was ok, the service was good, the salsa was very mild, overall the food was bland and left my craving unsatisfied.

I've been going to Rey's for a long time. My parents love the fajitas my dad gets the shrimp and my mom gets the steak and chicken one. And I always get the Taco Salad with ground beef.. I always ask for extra ground beef bc it's just so good it comes in a tortilla crispy bowl it's awesome and I love it. The prices are reasonable and it's BYOB we brought tequila and sometimes wine. Everyone I bring here loves it. It's good food and when the chips come out they are warm and taste so good. Oh and you need to ask for the cheese for the chips you won't regret it :).. The last time I went it was a Friday night and it is busy but it's fun and the wait staff are very friendly. Come here and have a great time eating some good food :)

Just went in & asked what I could get (to go) without onions on it. The waitresses eyes got big and she said, "but EVERYTHING has onions on it." I was bummed (super craving mexican food) but she said wait, and tried to find me alternatives. She was SOOO helpful! In the end, I got three grilled chicken tacos supreme & their DELICIOUS fresh chips with salsa for $10. I got home, and my chicken was absolutely succulent, couldn't believe how quickly I got it. My one small gripe was that my flour tacos were unappetizingly soggy. This could have been because I waited 20 minutes to eat them, or they weren't cooked enough. Either way, the filling was soo good I just dumped it onto my nachos & am enjoying them now!

Rey Azteca feels and tastes like authentic Mexican food. It is one of the only Mexican restaurants that I've ever been to that has placed so much thought into the decor. You really feel like you've walked into a small town restaurant in the heart of Mexico. My date ordered the Fajitas Texano ($15) which came with tortillas and a salad. The food itself was cooked well and the meat had a lot of flavor. The only complaint was that it was a little dry and he had to order a hot sauce on the side. I ordered the Quesadilla Texano ($13) that had a fully stuffed quesadilla with a salad and rice. The rice was a little bland so I mixed up the salad with the guacamole and then it was great. The meal came with a complimentary bowl of nacho chips and salsa. Its great when you have to wait for the food to arrive. The restaurant has always been full when we went so don't expect the food to come out right away. This isn't going to be like Chipotle or Taco Bell so be prepared for ground beans and full pieces of meat. If you want real Mexican food then this is the place.

I eat here a bit ago and didn't care for it at all. Having traveled to Mexico and eating here at other places, I'd say this place isn't very authentic to me. The food seems mass produced and actually bland to me. To be honest I think it's a bit of a joke that they serve what they serve. I'd doubt anyone working here eats what they send out of the kitchen.

This is my favorite Mexican restaurant! The service is excellent and all the servers are very pleasant! Prices are very reasonable! If I had to say anything negative about the place, it would be that it can be a bit loud, so if you are looking for a romantic dinner or a place to have a serious conversation, this is not the place to go ! I usually order the Crab Chimichanga , but tonight I tried the Fajitas De La Costa (Shrimp) and Wow, the meal was excellent !! My husband's favorite is the Camarones A La Diabla (Hot)! For dessert, we had fried ice cream, and it was amazing! We have never been disappointed and will continue to come back when we are in the mood for Mexican food!!! Oh, I forgot to mention that it's a BYOB - so bring your favorite beverage!

Ray's is our go-to local Mexican spot. Reasonably priced, no frills place which happens to serve delicious Mexican food. I wish I could provide a more robust review but the first dish I ever ordered there (steak fajitas) was so delicious that even though their menu boasts a TON of temping options, I can't help but stay loyal to my old standby. My husband is the same, always ordering the California burrito. The food is always fresh, plentiful and extremely delicious. Again, it's no frills. If you're looking for haute cuisine Mexi-fusion, this isn't the place to go, but if you want authentic cuisine in a lively, family oriented environment, than this is the place. Final note: the servers are amazing and always super accommodating to us and our toddler. We love that it feels like family when you're inside. Keep it up, Ray Azteca!

Great Food; great service; this is real Mexican food! If you are a alcohol drinker (IT is a BYOB) prices are reasonable

Friends turned us onto this place about a year ago. Always a delicious meal. Genuine family operation. Very cozy and family-friendly, colorful decor and warm, courteous, efficient service. Reasonably priced as well. We were sad when "Tortillas", a Mexican restaurant also on York Road, closed a few years ago. However, Rey Azteca fills the niche very nicely. Actually one of my favorites is the salsa served w/ complementary chips. It is incredible-more like gazpacho! Our teen-aged daughter is majorly wild for Mexican food and she loves this place--that is the official seal of approval!

My family came here after good reviews from several friends. Maybe it was a bad night, but the food was horrible. Taco bell would have been a better choice. Hardly any meat, and it was all ground up seasoned clump. My husband said it was just gross microwaved mexican food. Nothing fresh about this place. Also if you sit in a booth be prepaired for the black to move from the person sitting on the other side, my 10 year old actually sat forward from the constant bumping. Very loud and the cashier was not friendly like, actually kinda rude. We will not be returning.

This place is awesome bc of the following 1. free chips and salsa 2. BYOB-I always bring margaritas, beer, and wine 3. Cheap!!! Considering I feel like I have to drive to NYC for authentic Mexican, this place isn't too shabby-esp. For considering the perks!! :-)

My partner and I went to this location for lunch on a Saturday. I have seen it many times before and thought, why not try it. The decor has a kind of cheesy Mexican diner feel to it. With the painted walls to look like adobe, it did not look right. To the booths with seats that move whenever someone on the other side moves. The decor is just not why you will return. It appears to be a family owned business, I assume the two people serving were Father and Daughter. They were nice and attentive. The waitress catered to my wife's request to switch rice on her dish for beans. I had a pork quesadilla for my lunch. The pork serving was huge. It had sweet onions, and a little cheese. While the amount of pork was plenty, I wanted more cheese to it. The pork tasted like slow cooked beef to me. It had a decent flavor to it. The re-fried beans were nondescript. I received a lopsided plate for some reason, that is a first. The plate would rock back and forth. It was not the table, something about the plate was uneven. My wife had some kind of vegetarian dish and I did not taste it. She liked the guacamole. She found the meal a bit salty. Overall, it was an average meal. Nothing blew me away and nothing was awful. The price was cheap.

Good Mexican food at a great price. I had the #17 combo entree, which consisted of a chicken enchilada, a chicken burrito, and a side of rice and beans. Honestly, I'm not sure what the difference was between the enchilada and the burrito. They were both covered in enchilada sauce. Perhaps the burrito had something additional in it, but I didn't pay enough attention to notice what it was. My friend had the enchilada verde (not positive on the name). The chicken was good and flavorful. The beans and rice were also tasty. The chips delivered to the table prior to the meal (with salsa) were warm, perfectly salted (not too much). The meal wasn't anything spectacular, in my opinion, but it was good and the price of $20 for two entrees was reasonable. The server was friendly, the place was clean- all good to me!

Absolutely awesome Mexican food! I recommend the chimichangas, chicken and cheese flautas, chilaquiles mexicanos, and fajitas. The cheese sauce is an awesome appetizer and the flan dessert is the best I've ever had. Byob so you can enjoy any beverage of your choice. If you haven't tried Rey Azteca yet, do it! You will not be disappointed!

Rey Azteca's food is amazing by far! While I haven't tasted everything on their menu, what I have tasted has been fresh, juicy and flavorful each time I go. Everyone is so nice and understanding there and each time I go there I love the food even more! Keep doing whatever it is that you are doing Rey Azteca!!!

Very good food at very good prices. We have been going there for years and will continue to do so. We have tried many other Mexican restaurants in the area and none come close to matching it. Suggest you try it.

Went over the weekend when it was busy. Well worth the wait. Wait staff was very friendly and service was great. Food was delicious and the portions were large.

This is my new favorite Mexican joint. Burritos Texanos and Burrito Cancun are enormous and sooo great! They are as big as a fore arm and only priced around $12.99. Listen this place gets crowded during lunch, so I only ever get take out. Give it a go, you will be glad you did. and BTW someone posted on a online menu that they have soup... I asked and they never had or ever intend to carry soup.

  • Suni A.

This place is one step up from Taco Bell. And the reason for that is because they have waitstaff. The food is gross, most likely from a can. The rice was oily, they've ruined Spanish rice. How could you do that?! My BF ordered a enchilada, nowhere on the SIX-PAGE menu did it mention having chicken in it, yet it arrived with chicken! The salsa tasted just like it was from a can of Goya. None of the food had any Mexican spices. It's a good place to take your little kids who don't know real Mexican food from TB. One reviewer put it perfectly by saying this place is to Mexican food what Domino's is to Italian food.

Absolute favorite restaurant for Mexican food. Large portions for a small price and the food is authentic Mexican! I have taken many friends here and everyone is always pleasantly surprised!

I ate here a month or 2 ago and the foods was sub par. We dined in and none of what we ordered came out correct or very tasty. I'm confused by the many good reviews this place has.

This place is great with all dishes. The prices can't be beat and it's also BYOB. I would recommend this place to everyone.

  • Heather Jo M.

Best chips, salsa and guacamole in the area. Totally authentic. Great prices too!!! They have wifi which the kids love. The desserts aren't that great, but I haven't tried the flan. Meals are large and definitely too big to eat in one sitting.

  • Ally M.

This is by far my favorite Mexican place in the area!!!!! The food is so delicious and reasonably priced. The staff is great, too! I always get served by a friendly face. I haven't had many dishes because I'm obsessed with the chicken and cheese flautas, but my boyfriend tries to get new things and he's never disappointed. Most people pass right bc it used to be a Pizza Hut & I'll admit, having gone there a ton as a kid, it still has the vibe!! But the food is so worth it.

Far and away the best Mexican food I have found in the area. I'm from California, so I'm used to having Cal-Mex, Tex-Mex, and authentican Mexican places everywhere. Around here, it seems to be almost impossible to find. Rey Azteca not only tastes great but has a nice atmosphere and the staff are all really friendly (even though they look tough). To top it all of, everything is priced great.

Seriously this is mediocre Tex mex at best. I am so surprised by all the glowing reviews. I certainly can't tell you what to like or not, however if you have ever had good mex or TeX mex. You will recognize this be to be lackluster at best.

Is a good restaurant to bring the family. We invited our friends with their kids and they loved the food. Prices are good. The menu is a permutation of several items.

  • Jake F.

Not too bad for a place several thousand miles from Mexico. The cooked food is very good. I had something like a sampler platter, and it was really good. My wife had something with chicken and cream ( Pollo con cremo? or something like that) and it was really good. I should have eaten hers. Free salsa and chips. Salsa is out of a bottle, but it still tastes pretty good. BYOB and get hammered, they don't care. I took a small cooler in there. Service is out of this world excellent. Will definitely return. Oh yeah, prices really reasonable, almost feel guilty about them. Pay no attention to the snooty "know it alls" who think they're so smart because they ate dinner in Mexico on vacation once. You know, the ones who tell you it's not authentic Mexican food? They can stuck a chimichanga up their ass, then go pound sand. It's good food and you will be pleased.

Yum. I have loved Rey Azteca from my days living in Johnstown, PA- which I think was the original location. The food is very well priced and the portions are extremely generous. The cheese quesadillas are my favorite, and the refried beans are amazing. The only thing I tend not to like is the chicken that comes in the burritos, and sometimes the beef, but that's probably just me. Definitely a fun place.

    (4)
  • Manuela M.

Food is delicious & portions are generous. 5 stars for the food & service! I love it here!

    (5)
  • Christine B.

I decided to try this place based on other reviews. I thought the food was okay. It's pretty basic tex-mex, but it seemed to be lacking some flavor. The guacamole was some kind of weird dip, I'm 99% sure it came out of a plastic container from the grocery store. The service was a little slow, and the comprehension of English was at a minimum. Not a problem for me, but if you have special dietary requirements, I think it would be pretty hard to explain unless you speak Spanish. The prices are dirt cheap, so I would go back if I was really craving cheap Mexican. It's BYO.

  • Sandy S.

Our favorite authentic Mexican restaurant! We have yet to find anywhere else around that beats their food.. hands down the best in the area. We drive past the Mexican restaurant that is right around the corner from our house to go eat at Rey Azteca an extra 15 minutes away.

    (5)
  • Jaclyn B.

Best Mexican food I've ever had. Pretty authentic. Their homemade tortilla chips with the cheese dip or just their own salsa are off the chain...dayumm. Cheap and delicious. I deduct one star for lack of plain ole black beans:(

    (4)
  • Tom C.

Really 4.5. Great meal at a reasonable price. We are stuffed and taking home a meal with the leftovers! I will recommend this restaurant to any of my friends. Its not the fanciest decor, but I will take these prices for great food any day of the week!! Staff was friendly but not the most attentive.

One of our favorite Mexican restaurants for a quick, no frills, inexpensive meal is Rey Azteca. We have always had hospitable, efficient and accurate service here and are sorry to read that others have been unsatisfied. On our various visits, we have generally ordered enchiladas and have found the chicken and beef fillings to be flavorful and succulent. While the beans were mild, they seemed lighter and not overwhelmed by unnecessary additional fat than typical offerings. An additional charm of Rey Azteca is that the portions are generous, so we regularly have leftovers to enjoy the next day. As others have noted weaknesses are the chips and unzippy salsa, which are perfectly edible but definitely not crave-worthy.

    (4)
  • Zanna H.

I gave this place a second chance. While it is still the basic Tex-Mex food found everywhere else the food was prepared a little better this time. Service is still lacking though.

    (3)
  • Teresa H.

This place has the worst mexican food I've ever eaten in my life. The salsa tastes like tomato sauce from a can. The service was awful. The enchiladas were awful. All the sauces awful. I have nothing nice to say about Rey Azteca. If your looking for cheap mexican food go to Salsas in Montgomryville or even taco bell is better than this.

    (1)
  • Christina W.

"One chicken burrito, pollo con crema with no beans and can we have some sour cream?" I order the same thing, every time. I love it. It's as close as I've ever come to the perfect meal. The waiters are always so nice and attentive. The food always comes out so quickly and it's always so delicious! This place is by far my absolutely favorite Mexican restaurant, ever.

  • Pat F.

This place is always crowded so we gave it a shot. We were not wowed by anything, the food ok, nothing special, lots to choose from and the prices were very reasonable. BYOB= 1 star Food/selection/price= 1 star Converted pizza hut with the same red cups= 1 star Not rushing back any time soon.

  • Kristen C.

Went here for the first time yesterday, for lunch. Large portions, especially for the inexpensive prices ($6-$7 for lunch specials). I got the grilled shrimp with cheese - delish! The food was really good and I'll definitely be back.

  • Dan P.

Great service and food. We always have a nice time when we go here. I truly can't say a bad word about this place.

    (5)
  • Eric D.

Best mexican food around! When you try to find them look for a buiding that looks like Pizza Hut. They seat you and you are served some warm chips and salsa, a great start while you wait for the food. The wait after your order is not long and soon you are able to dive into Yum City. Food selection is big so it may take a few minutes to narrow it down. BYOB if you please, bring beer or wine. The cost of the meals are very resonable. Parking can get tight and expect a wait for a table during peak dining times.

    (5)
  • J F.

Decent little Mexican place, hokey and a bit dumpy like it should be, no pretense of fine dining here. We prefer Las Margaritas on Welsh Rd, but go here when we're not up for the drive. Had better, but I've also had much much worse. That gets you a 3 out of 5. The chips taste like bagged and you can get the same salsa from a jar of Herdez. It does get better tho. Their chile rellenos are solid while I try something different each time. Pollo Adobe is a good dish. Service is slow, but they're always freindly and polite. No liquor license, which helps get out there without denting the wallet too bad. If you're in the area and have a craving for Mexican give it shot and make your own call.

    (3)
  • Rafael G.

Rey Azteca serves up an old fashioned stereotype of Mexican food - think two big wet enchiladas on a platter with refried beans, rice and shredded lettuce. All this in an environment where the dry wall is painted tan, apparently to make it resemble adobe, with cheesy sombreros hanging all over the walls. If that is what you want, it is reasonably good and not too expensive; many of the items on their lunch menu are quite large for only $6-7. However, if you consider this the ultimate in Mexican food, I encourage you try other places whenever you find yourself in a city with a bigger Mexican population. In the local area, you might try Tamarindo's in Blue Bell. Really, Rey Azteca is to Mexican food what Pizza Hut is to Italian.

I guess I can understand all the Rey Azteca love on here considering this restaurant is located in PA, but relocate this restaurant to Southern California (where I'm from), Arizona, Texas...or basically any region with a demographic that understands what constitutes good Mexican food...and nobody would eat there. This is not good Mexican food, people. I'm not saying that it isn't good food; my chimichanga was good enough for me to enjoy eating it (and it wasn't really an authentic chimichanga...it was actually what would be called a taco in Mexico...the same thing Americans call taquitos), but I also enjoy eating Taco Bell every once in a while. That doesn't mean that I confuse it for good Mexican food. A previous reviewer said that Rey Azteca is to Mexican food what Pizza Hut is to Italian food...that's the perfect analogy for this place. It just feels like it's trying too hard to be an authentic Mexican eatery...from the bright orange paint to the sombreros hanging on the wall...but they don't even make their own chips and salsa!!! That's a must for any Mexican restaurant that is going to get a good rating anywhere except in PA. Warmed up chips out of a bag and flavorless tomato paste salsa...get out of here with that crap. I can go on and on about why this place doesn't deserve more than 2 stars, but I'll let you come to that realization for yourself. All you people who LOVE Rey Azteca...drive down York Rd. about a mile or two to downtown Hatboro and find this little tiny taco shop named La Morena. This is GREAT Mexican food, and would fit right in with the thousands of great taco shops in Southern California. Go get yourself a meal there...then go back to eat at Rey Azteca and tell me that you don't have a different opinion of how good or authentic Rey Azteca really is.

I have not been here forever (because I don't live in Philly any more), but I cannot say enough about this spot! Great place! Very authentic, sweet service, and great food!!!!! if you want to get some more advance plate, try to get the Mojarra Frita (basically fried fish). It comes with pico de gallo, lime, spanish rice and french fries! Little out of your ways from Philly but a great spot indeed!!!

  • Shawnne H.

Authentic it is not. Everything tastes canned/processed and nothing has texture - even the chips were stale. We tried it 3 times, hoping it was just a fluke since it got such great reviews but were not impressed. On the plus, service is quick and prices are cheap and the kids liked it (salty cheesy mushy what more could a 3 year old want?), but hubby and I prefer fresh ingredients and sauces. Oh, and the "special cheese sauce" everyone is raving about - I'm pretty sure it is melted american cheese with a dash of garlic salt and paprika in it - YUCK! La Morena down the road is 12000000 times better and fresher!

we ate: veggie fajita (small), crab n shrimp burrito(lots of shrimp and that saved the day), chips. salsa (weak) service was good this was the second time i was here. the first time was wayyyy better. kinda disappointed.

I don't know where to start.... the service is amazing, the food is delicious and priced right, and there are many options to choose from. I think you could classify this as a mexcian diner...they have a little bit of everything and the environment is nice and relaxed. I have recommended this place to many friends and family.

Christina W is my BFF (reviewed below and provided pictures) and we allllllways go to this place and leave stuffed, happy, and high on life. We usually leave here and have to go shopping afterwards to walk it off. Otherwise I might fall asleep while driving. I can not go to this place without ordering at least ONE chicken enchilada. I might get pollo con crema, or fajitas, or something else, but I always need a chicken enchilada too. Why? Because they are THE BEST chicken enchiladas I have ever had. I have been trying for 2 years now to make a sauce that duplicates Rey Azteca's. No luck, so they keep me coming back for more. The tacos are also a win. I get beef with crunchy shells, and slather them with sour cream and a little bit of salsa. DELICIOUS. Pollo con crema -- what can I say?? Look at the pictures. It's just amazing. Cut up the chicken then mix it all together with the rice. You have a plate full of saucy goodness. Then take a chip (you'll probably have to ask for a refill when your dinner comes), dip it in the sour cream, take a forkfull of saucy-chicken-rice goodness, plop it on the chip, and devour. Simply amazing. I can't say enough good things about this place. I've had a birthday celebration here every year since they opened and they are always accommodating to large parties. Actually, I take that back. My one and only complaint is that there isn't a changing table for babies in the women's room. I was here with my baby one night and she had an accident and I had to change her, and had no options. But, don't get me wrong. It's not like that keeps me out of this place.

Someone has a new favorite Mexican Restaurant, and that someone is me! Amazing, AMAZING flavor! The menu has a large selection of great authentic dishes. They remind me of my aunts cooking, completely authentic (did I just say that twice in two sentences, yup, i did. For emphasis and all). The servers here actually take pride in serving you delicious food and go out of their way to ensure that your meal is a great one. I don't really think I can say much more other than DELICIOUS! (and get the cheese sauce, the stuff that they pour on practically everything, it will clog your arteries and you will love it, promise)

Aaaaaaaaaaaand we've found a great Mexican place close by too! Really digging our new place! We tried Rey Azteca after searching for a cheap place close by to grab dinner. This place had great Yelp ratings so we gave it a whirl. So glad we did! We walked in and immediately felt cozy. It's painted orange and red with fun decor and music fitting the theme. We were served warm chips and salsa immediately. As we dove into the nachos (warm, fresh and yummy) we perused the extensive menu. There were so many dishes that sounded good. I ended up getting Burritos Mexicanas filled with shredded beef tips and topped with cheese sauce. They were SO good. The meat was fork tender and there was plenty of cheese. T got the Enchiladas which came with a beef, a chicken, a bean and a cheese enchilada. The sauce wasn't as wet as it usually is but I prefer that. I had a small bite and it was very flavorful. Our only complaint, and the only thing keeping this place from being five stars was the lack of spice. Nothing was spicy! The salsa, the beans, the burritos, nothing. And there wasn't any hot sauce or anything on the table either. I suppose we could have asked for it but I expect at least salsa to have SOMETHING tingly in it. But it was a small price to pay for delicious food. Next time we'll ask for the Tabasco.

This place is fantasic!! I went here for the first time two weeks ago on the recommendation of a co worker. Im so glad that i did. One word.. chimichanga.... ok lets make it two works chicken chimichanga! The prices are great, less than 8 bucks per dinner combination. The service is super fast and friendly. I loved the salsa here too. Im not a big fan of the refried beans but thats true of almost all mexican places i just dont like the texture of beans that are so mashed, its like a paste I had the beef taco combination platter and added a chimichanga on the side.. i went back a week later bringing more ppl out and had a round of chimichangas for all.... ps i like saying chimichanga : )

We really LOVE this place. The fajitas are great. The mole sauce is exceptional. Try the guacamole with the complimentary chips and salsa. The restaurant is not at all pretentious. It's just a great little Mexican place where the service is fast, the food is tasty and plentiful.

This place has decent tex-mex comfort food that's one or two notches in quality above fast food. The waitstaff was friendly and responsive. Our food was delivered quickly. There was plenty of room for our two year old sitting in a high chair and lots of other young children around. Even though there was a line well out the door on a Saturday at dinner, turnover was fast and we were seated within 15 minutes.

LOVE LOVE LOVE this place. Their food is amazing and dirt cheap. My husband and I love Las Margaritas for the drinks and Rey Azteca for the food. The menu is huge, but in a good way. Lots of options. The chips and salsa are delicous and I love that it's a byob! We were there around Christmas last year and stumbled on their complimentary margarita night. That was a nice little bonus. We always get great food and excellent service when we are there. We have recommended Rey Azteca to several friends and they all love it too.

My wife and I think that this is the best Mexican food in the area. The food is consistently great and you get huge portions for not very much money. Service is always fast although the waitstaff's English is far from perfect. It's also kid friendly. The combination platters are great too because you get a little bit of everything. The chips and salsa are complimentary as well.

The food tastes good, but its just bland. It is just I completely agree with Dave P. It is good food, don't get me wrong, but its not good mexican food.

My favorite Mexican place! Once ate there twice in one day. Lunch and dinner. Better food and cheaper prices than Las Margaritas.(BYOB) Super fast service, food comes out too hot to eat! Always seems to be same wait staff working which are very friendly and give great service.

Wow! The queso, salsa, quac, spicy salsa and warm chips are a fantastic way to begin. The burrito came with a cheese sauce which was surprisingly good but different. Try it with the spicy salsa. The carnitas were a little over done but the steak and chicken were perfectly cooked. This is a very modest prices mexican restaurant that is family friendly with good service and good food fast. The lunch entrees are well portioned and the dinner entrees are deliciously large in size but friendly on the wallet. If you lost a bet and are buying for your friends pick this place and you'll pay $10-$15 per person. Remember to bring your own booze. Don't fill up on chips like me... but you'll be happy regardless of what you do as long as you go to this place and don't have to wait in line. This place does move quickly. Go now and you won't be disappointed. So much good mexican and such little time.

Clean, fast, yummy. Only place in the area to have cheese dip. Pollo adobe was amazing. Great enchiladas. Fajitas sizzling at nearby tables smelled great. Will definitely go back. Great prices. Highly recommend.

I used to love this place. But somewhere along the way I realized their salsa tastes like watery ketchup. And while the prices are going up the quality of the ingredients is going down. The chips are not as good as they used to be and rice is now both brittle and greasy and the cheese they use to top the dishes has changed and now is very greasy. The last straw for us was when they switched from Pepsi to Coke products. I don't know, but it's just not cutting it for me anymore. There are still a few things I'll get if I'm going with a group and everyone is gung-ho to go there. The lunch Mexican burrito is still decent and their enchiladas are not bad. I just do not enjoy the rice at all anymore and I don't touch the chips & salsa. Having said all that, the service is good, and if you are just introducing someone to Mexican this might be a good place to start. It's not at all spicy (another complaint of mine) so picky eaters or those afraid to try Mexican might be happy here.

Great local mexican place! I've gotten something different just about every time I've gone for either dinner or lunch and every time I enjoy it. The taco salad bowl is particularly good, and I love their refried beans which are served with a good majority of the lunch dishes. The warm chips they serve before the meal along with the salsa are also great appetizers. Very inexpensive and fast service, though my only complaint is it can be a little loud inside at times. The music they're playing could also turn a few people off though we kind of find it charming. The inside as others have mentioned is an old pizza hut so it's nothing fancy, but it's nothing bad.

Awesome! Awesome! Awesome! This place gets 3 awesomes... Real authentic. I would go back just for the guacamole! I had some "mexican sandwich" thing that had a mexican name... I forget what it is. But it was GOOD. The tortilla chips were still warm when they came to the table. Great service, food rocks. I can't wait to go back to Rey Azteca!! I didn't have dessert but next time I definitely will. They had a yummie dessert menu.

I went there for take out lunch the other day. Not bad I would say for someone trying out "authentic" Mexican food. Not the best I've had but not the worst. The take out portion wasn't what I expected.. on the side of less than more. If I was starving i would have been disappointed by the portion. Pork burrito, taco, chicken burrito was what I ordered. Some came with rice and refried beans. Nothing that blew me away... just okay I guess. I think they're BYOB. I'd like to try more so the place left me more curious than anything. I hope dinner is better and I'd like to eat there instead of take out one day.

This is far and away the worst Mexican food I've ever had, let alone in this area. I cannot understand what planet the rest of these yelpers are from. Your raving reviews make me embarrassed to be from Montgomery County. First off, this place is great Mexican food as much as Old Country Buffet is from the old country. I would even recommend Taco Bell above this place. The atmosphere still feels like a pizza hut, the servers are slow and inattentive, the food is bland and tastes like it comes from a giant paint-gallon-size can, and when there are so many other great Mexican restaurants around I am shocked this place is 1) still open and 2) getting good reviews on yelp. If you are obese, wear crocs, have really annoying kids, love to eat food that tastes like a microwave dinner or like it came from a can, or if you have lost the ability to taste anything, by all means this is your place. I am telling all NORMAL potential customers - DO NOT GO HERE. If you are looking for casual Mexican fare, LOOK ELSEWHERE!!! You are guaranteed to be disappointed at Rey Azteca.

  • Scott S.

I judge mexican restaurants by the freshness of their chips, and the quality of the guac. Rey Azteca lives up to my standards - excellent on both counts. Was so good that I ate there for the first time on a Friday and went back on Sunday. The jalapeño cheese sauce they smother most dishes with is amazing. Highly recommend the quesadilla platter - 1 chicken, 1 beef, with extra cheese sauce! BYOB (yay!) - service is good and friendly, but probably better if you speak spanish (as half the people eating there did... which tells you something about authenticity... this isn't taco bell).

This is a great little mexican joint! Have only ever ordered the pork carnitas or the fajitas. Both are outstanding and very reasonably priced. I am always tempted to try something else but can never pull myself away from the standard stuff I always get!

Went here on a saturday night stocked with homemade margaritas and Dos Equis after reading some reviews on yelp. This place was definitely a pizza hut before Rey Azteca took over, but we thought that made it even more was comical and awesome If you are looking for a fancy Mexican place, this is not for you. If you are looking for a cheap BYOB that piles your plate with food for about $10/person, then you've found your place Service was decent. The only hiccup we ran into was one of my friends ordered beef tacos with a side of refried beans. Our waiter was perplexed by this request and we all were confused because it seemed like a pretty standard order. When his tacos arrived, they were tacos filled with refried beans along with a side of refried beans. We told him of the mistake and he immediately brought out what my friend originally wanted (beef tacos, not bean) with a side of beans along with a complementary dish of bean tacos. I ordered the beef fajitas for two to split with my sister and It was a heaping pile of meat that I had for leftovers two more meals afterwards. Good Cheap mexican. Give it a shot if you're in the neighborhood.

I like this place a lot! I am a frequent customer! The food is delicious, fresh, and comes out very quickly. For the most part service has always been great. Twice it was a little iffy but both times I had the same server... so, I'm assuming it's just her. The decor is a little cheesy, but that's not my main concern. It's also a BYOB which is awesome! Enjoy :)

im not a food expert or a mexican food expert at that! I love Taco Bell for mexican. but what I can tell you is food here is good, cheap, fast and you get alot. I always ordered Flautas, beans, rice with an extra side of sour cream. YUM

I was really excited to try this place since there are so many positive reviews. It was pretty eh. We stared with guacamole. When it arrived at our table, my husband said "I wonder how long ago that was made." Our entrees, which included a pretty decent variety of items, were greasy, overly cheesy, and gloppy. The ground meat was terribly salty. And the restuarant was a little hot and steamy. I think Plaza Azteca in Plymouth Meeting is a step above.

The best place to eat Mexican in the area. It features a festive atmosphere; friendly, speedy service; and authentic Mexican cuisine. For lunch, the prices are unbeatable. A combination lunch meal ranges $5 - $8 and is very filling. Homemade salsa and chips are included, for free, for lunch and dinner. For dinner, the prices are slightly higher but still under $15 a plate but this is offset by the increased portion sizes. If you're looking for a recommendation on meals, I love the enchiladas but have also had a good experience with tamales and burritos.

Excellent, excellent, excellent. Need I say more? Whether you are taking another person out for lunch or a whole group of people, this place is very accomodating. The wait staff is always very friendly and responsive. The complimentary chips and salsa (warm and fresh tasting) are the best around. The prices are very affordable. If you want to look generous, take your friends here for lunch! You'll be a hero and not have to spend much money. I usually order the chicken chimichanga lunch special. I'm a sucker for deep fried foods so that's two stars. The cheese sauce they pour on top and the extras that come with the meal are worth 2 stars. The fifth star is for the quality of service and speed of the chefs in the kitchen. This is truly a rare combination in today's eating out experience.

For this particular type of mexican, this place came up lame in my opinion. I definitley expected better. I ordered 2 chicken quesadillas. Weak. Chicken Cheese and Tortilla=Crap. I could've ordered something that terrible at Friendly's. Not even a smidgen comparable to Las Margaritas in N.E., Phila. Not even close. What a weak place. Extremely forgettable. Good service/salsa

If I could rate Rey Azteca more than 5 stars, I would. I've been going there with my father almost every week for over a year, and the food is consistently good every single time. It fluctuates between great to really great maybe. They have tons of dishes and combinations so anyone can find something, and everything is good. I hate ground beef tacos but I love them at Rey Azteca. Every table gets free tortilla chips, which are amazing, and salsa, which must be homemade or something and is incredible. Service is very simple and polite, and food always comes out fast even when the restaurant is busy. Rey Azteca is a model to what a good restaurant should be like. Try the Burrito Supreme or the Fajitas if you don't feel like being risky...but the Pollo Adobe and combination dinners are worth a try too.

This place is top notch!! Ive been about 10 times and each has been great. The food is great but I have to say the service is above and beyond. Ive never waited more than ten minutes for my food and my glass is always full. The chips and salsa are great but a little tip- ask for the spicy salsa!! They charge $1.50 extra but if you like a good authentic hot salsa you will not be disappointted!!

Rey Azteca feels really really authentic. Don't let the old Pizza Hut outside fool you. If you want tasty food with huge portions for under $10, then this is your place. I know it's my new place for Mexican.

  • M. C.

I am still a fan, but the food quality is a little lower and less flavorful than some other area Mexican restaurants. The dillema is the food is still good and soooo cheap relative to the portion sizes that it is hard to complain. This is not true authentic Mexican food but rather Americanized. I still say its good and filling but not great.

    (3)
  • Sarah K.

Rey Azteca is the best and cheapest mexican food in this area. The mexican restaurants in the area tend to be overpriced, but at Rey Azteca, you get amazing food for amazing prices. It's byob, so if you bring wine and order the sangria soda, it's an automatic sangria! I love everything I've gotten here, but my favorite dish is chicken, smothered with cheese and comes with tortillas to wrap it in. My family is also a fan of the green enchiladas and chicken con crema. Anything you get will be good, trust me! And it's only a 5 minute drive from the Regal Warrington cinemas, so make it a whole night out! We do that a lot.

Coming from California I tend to be a harsh judge on what constitutes a good Mexican place. Even before eating I have several rules that must be met for me to consider it in the upper echelon. 1) Chips and salsa on the table as you sit down. 2) Decorations that are kitschy fun and silly. 3) An occasional tuba laden song sifting through the place. Happily, Rey Azteca situated in an a hollowed out Pizza Hut started off wonderfully living up to all of these expectations. Honestly, they did a good job of redecorating, if I hadn't seen the hard to miss Pizza Hut top on the outside I would have never known of it's former use. The decorations are fun, little bits of mexico and artificially aged paint jobs. The seating is very comfortable. There are tables in the middle for big groups and plenty of booths on the side for the smaller groups. The wait staff was fast and very friendly and happy to answer any questions. We ordered our food, and even with a packed house got it in a reasonable amount of time. I ordered the texanas fajitas. Which is steak, chicken and shrimp mixed with some green bell peppers and onions. It is served smoking hot with a few tortillas and a side of guacamole, sour cream, and refried beans. This all combined into a fantastic meal. The fajitas were delicious. But, next time I will go to the spicier side of things and try out a taco or two. The food was delicious. And, there was an enormous amount of it. Some people claim I am a light eater, (My waist line sure doesn't agree!) but, even with that I barely made a dent into all of the scrumptious food I had in front of me. I look forward to tomorrow's lunch! This place is a bit out of the way up in Warminster, but in spite of that I cannot recommend it highly enough. Great food, great service, fun ambiance. I went for dinner and the prices were reasonable. The lunch time prices look even better.

Don't let the fact that its an old Pizza Hut fool you. Reys is an amazing Mexican BYOB. I'd been looking for a new Mexican place since Chi Chis closed and finally found this a few years ago. Amazing homemade chips and salsa. Good guac. Great queso dip. I always end up ordering the same thing, beef chimichanga. Someday I will branch out and try other things. Been there with many different people and they've all loved it.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS PLACE! I'm a huge fan of Mexican food, spending years stationed in both San Antonio, TX and San Diego, CA and border crossing from time to time, this place is about as good as it gets in the NE! I've been going here for nearly 3 years now as it's close to work and we always have lunch meetings there. For the first year or so, I went with the Carne Asada Tacos, then I tried the El Ranchero platter, platter, not the lunch..there is a huge difference. This is shredded chicken and chorizo cooked in a creamy cheese sauce. It looks like a hot mess, but tastes DELICIOUS! Then, one day about a year ago I decided to try the Burritos Fajitas Hidalgo and I haven't got anything else since. It's perfectly sized burritos (2) One chicken, One beef with onions and peppers (hence the fajita part) it's drizzled in the same creamy cheese sauce with fresh pico on top and it's so fresh and delish! This place is awesome and I love that we go there at least 3 or 4 times a month!

  • Mike K.

Really good food. Salsa is top notch and they give you a little carafe of it so you usualy don't have to worry about running out and having to ask for more. My personal favorite is the burritos fajita hidalgo. I get it almost every time and it's awesome. Would give this place five stars but the service can be spotty. The food always comes out fast but sometimes it can be hard to flag down your waiter or get a check. All around though the service is friendly and they have the best mexican in the area.

  • Steve D.

Great food. Great prices. Quick in and out meal. Staff doesn't all speak English well but it's doable!!

  • Rebecca H.

  • Tom C.

Went here for the first time yesterday, for lunch. Large portions, especially for the inexpensive prices ($6-$7 for lunch specials). I got the grilled shrimp with cheese - delish! The food was really good and I'll definitely be back.

Great service and food. We always have a nice time when we go here. I truly can't say a bad word about this place.

We frequent this place often, and for good reason. Outstanding food. Inexpensive. Great staff and quick service. Lucky to have this little Mexican gem we can walk to.

  • Denise J.

We really LOVE this place. The fajitas are great. The mole sauce is exceptional. Try the guacamole with the complimentary chips and salsa. The restaurant is not at all pretentious. It's just a great little Mexican place where the service is fast, the food is tasty and plentiful.

  • Dave K.

  • Jessica P.

    (5)
  • Jason B.

  • Mike C.

My favorite Mexican place! Once ate there twice in one day. Lunch and dinner. Better food and cheaper prices than Las Margaritas.(BYOB) Super fast service, food comes out too hot to eat! Always seems to be same wait staff working which are very friendly and give great service.

    (5)
  • Mo P.

  • Josh P.

Clean, fast, yummy. Only place in the area to have cheese dip. Pollo adobe was amazing. Great enchiladas. Fajitas sizzling at nearby tables smelled great. Will definitely go back. Great prices. Highly recommend.

  • M. C.

    (2)
  • Adam K.

  • Amanda D.

Awesome! Awesome!

    (5)
  • Damian O.

  • Rachel E.

    (1)

  • Josh V.

Enjoy :)

Good, inexpensive Mexican food is hard to find in Philly. I've had tacos, enchiladas, burritos and flautas here and they've all been good.

It was a simple solid Mexican meal. Good pricing and good service. I enjoyed the music as well! Get the sopapillas for dessert.

Very fast & courteous service and food was pretty darn authentic! Have been here several times, trying a different dish every time, and have yet to be disappointed.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
