The Holy of Holies when it comes to meat, cheese and bread. I've been eating here since 1977, and I still make 3 hour detours on trips up the coast for a pizzasteak from V&S. With an extra classic to go - it's a little less messy for the car - I'm stoked for the rest of the trip.

Great salad and sandwiches! House salad dressing was delicious!

We love V&S, the subs are large and full of meat. The rolls are always fresh and tasty. The workers are so friendly and the service is great. The prices are very fair for the about of food you get. I usually get a turkey sub but the gizmo is also very good.

Food is decent but not great. I found that different locations are not consistent with their sandwiches. I can list a handful of sub shops id rather go to in Berks county.

Hubby said it, "The best Philly Cheese Steak I've ever had outside of Philly." And it is barely outside of Philly, but an oh so convenient 2-minute drive from his dad's place, so we always get a sammich from here every time we are in town. If you come here, it's just for the food, not to look around and sigh, "Ah....how beautiful," because you are pretty much smack dab in the middle of the ghetto. Everything about the decor here is completely wrong and nothing has been updated since 1973. We never feel like we're any danger or anything, but the refrigerator case full of 40's with names like, "Hurricane," scrawled on them, or the random guy talking to himself incoherently, or the Corona beads dangling from above the counter are all too blatant of reminders about the type of establishment this is. I enjoy watching the other customers as they roll in; some look like they just rolled out of bed, some wear scrubs spattered with paint, many are missing more than just teeth, and I especially love how color and pattern coordination seem irrefutably taboo here. You will never see anyone wear a trendy little number in this shop or someone that looks like they've showered recently. Even I don't dare to come in here dressed in more than my nondescript jeans with my Little Miss Trouble tee and some sneakers, but then again, I'm not like that. Don't get me wrong, they all seem like genuinely nice people, just genuinely nice people without mirrors or color-vision. While we sat eating our sandwiches, Richie started laughing because as a piece of steak fell out of his sandwich and hit the tray, the video game behind us in perfect timing, sounded with a shrill, "Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeew - pugh!!" (That was supposed to be a falling explosive.) Anyway...they also have a pin ball machine here (pinball rocks!) and out of nowhere, we hear, "Yo ho ho a pirate's life for me" sung in a eerie kid's voice. I was thinking "Wtf? That was creepy as all hell...", then we figured out it was the Pirates of the Caribbean pin ball machine. They could sure use some music in here.

Oh! I love this place. These are the tastes and smells that embody my childhood. A trip to V & S was always one of the best parts of visiting my mom's relatives in Reading as a kid... Was always our last stop before heading home. An authentic, hole-in-the-wall sub shop on the outskirts of town, V & S has a parking lot that looks sketchy as hell even in broad daylight. The inside isn't much better: expect buzzing machinery, cracked linoleum, and general disarray. But the food! For the immediate meal and car ride home to Maryland, my mom and I always went for the classic Italian drowning in olive oil, vinegar and herbs, while my Dad, siblings and cousins preferred cheesesteaks, plus fries and super doughy, greasy pizza all around. And it always felt so special to be able to request half of our sandwiches as "travelers" (meaning ready-to-make later on, with the cheesesteak meat and sauce in a separate container, or with waxy paper rolled between the bread and fillings of the Italian, to keep the roll from getting soggy). Mmm!!! Plus, they sell the best potato chips in the world, Good's, which I've only ever seen in PA. V & S in such a classic... We used to pick up like twenty pounds of extra crap there just before leaving town, and all of it food! And none of it good for us. And absolutely worth it...
