This review was from a while back in response to my first review. For some reason it didn't post correctly. Thank you Ron for taking note of my review and contacting me. My husband and I went back to your restaurant this past Saturday. We made a reservation for 6pm, but definitely wasn't needed as the place was empty. Looks like you guys start getting busy after 6:30pm. The salsa and guacamole were excellent. My husband ordered the seafood enchiladas and really enjoyed them. My potato and cheese enchiladas were good, I just didn't realize it was going to be all potato. We certainly plan to go again, so I am glad that Ron reached out. There isn't a lot of choose from in this area, so I'm glad we found a place we liked. Loved the guitar player.

Way overpriced, seafood enchiladas only had shrimp in them and they were supposed to have crab and scallops as well.Sat outside and it was a mistake.Loud, annoying people in the alley right behind where you sit. Honestly,Plaza Azteca in Wyomissing destroys this place in every way.

Came here for a Friday night date with my boyfriend. The place was empty! I'm not sure why other than location, or maybe because the holidays just ended. The inside of the restaurant was cute and had character. Our waitress was very attentive and friendly. The owner came out for a bit to chat and check in on our thoughts. He offered a bit of history on the building pre-restaurant. The food was great! I got the seafood enchiladas. Delicious! I just wanted them to be a little bigger...or maybe i just didn't want my meal to be over yet! I think next time I visit may ask if I could pay a bit more for a little extra crab meat. I even ordered dessert....and I never order dessert! I'd come back here again.

Came here a few years ago. We pop in once and awhile. Its always been excellant. I must say , i am sitting inside the restuarant as i write this. They took our order 3 times, somehow kept losing it. Also, pretty sure all the staff is new. Ingredients seem poor, not fresh. Something really bad has happened here no matter how pretty it looks. If you want good mexican on pottstown go to los Aztecus or find a taco bell. This place is really not impressive. If something doesnt change soon they may have to close. Also, what mexican restuarant serves pasta ? Good luck.

Really liked it here. We had the queso for the appetizer, and I had the pescado do dia, which was tilapia covered with crab meat. Very good. My fiancé had carne asada, a thin steak with mole, and cheese enchilada, with refried beans. This is easily one of the best restaurants in Pottstown, a place badly in need of a thriving food scene. It's good, check it out.

This place is BYOB. I'm not sure how that is possible as it was completely renovated so in essence, as it was new, I feel like you automatically make a provision for a liquor license. I could be wrong. But there is a reason there are only 2 tables seated on a Friday night guys. I'd like to come back because I think the ambiance is great as is the artwork. Hopefully they will fix that soon.

Dined 6/6/15. Place was very empty for a Sat night. Got guacamole and chips for app. They give just enough chips to eat all the guac if you put tons on each chip. More chips do cost more. It does say first basket is complimentary on menu. Flavor was okay. Nothing spectacular. Two entrees were seafood enchiladas and the carne asada. Didn't notice any seafood but shrimp in the enchiladas. Flavor was good tho. Not a very big portion. Didn't think carne asada would come out as the whole steak. I've only ever had it sliced into strips. A little fatty but decent flavor. Also came with 2 cheese enchiladas which I liked. Beans and rice could've been out of a can or bag. We took a bottle of wine which our waitress gladly opened for us and provided glasses for. 1 app and 2 entrees were $45.00. Way too much for only average tasting food. For that price I want it to be a memorable meal. We will not be back.

El Paso to this place. How they say"fine Mexican cuisine" is beyond me. FIrst of all I'm spoiled because of all my trips to Santa Fe, but I like Mexican food and thought I'd give this place a try. Walked in on a Saturday night at 7:30 and no hostess at the front. After looking around a minute or more I asked a waitress if we could sit anywhere and she said no, she would get the hostess. The hostess never said sorry, good evening, how are you, nothing, just do you have a reservation. Gave her the name and she looked around the place as thought this was a maze to be solved. There were at least 6 tables open, which should have been a clue as to what was to come, and she finally seated us. Waitress came over gave us menus, told us they were out of 2 things on the menu, and what would you like to order. Never had a waitress ask for an order as soon as I sat down. After she opened the wine I asked if she would bring a wine chiller back and she said "yah", brb. When she came back to take our order there was no wine chiller so we gave her our order and I asked again. Again I got the same answer , but no chiller ever appeared. Ok, the food is so-so at best. The Cuban chicken was ok, but nothing like it's described and the "salad" that came with it was a joke. On a fried small tortilla was 5 cherry tomato's and 6-7 pieces of field greens. I will say the lime dressing was good. The "spicy" flounder was totally bland. The fish was perfectly white and fesh, but what happened to the spicy part??? The flounder came with a small cup of tortilla soup. The soup consisted of 1 small shred of chicken, a few kernels or corn and borth. Most tortilla soups come heavy on corn, chicken, some diced green peppers and the broth is a small part. The best part of the meal was the tequila lime shrimp. 12 small shrimp came in a platter swimming in a very good broth that was spicy, but no overlly so. That was by far the best thing we had. Between the disinterested wait staff, the lack of greeting at the door and the bland food I won't go back. I guess if you live in that area, want some Mexican food it beats Taco Bell. The price for dinner for 2 was only $57, so I guess it is worth that. We left around 9 and the place was almost empty. You can park on the street, they take Visa and MC and it is BYO. If you're going to Pottstown, go to Funky little Kitchen, better food, better service.

I've been here a few times and haven't had a bad meal yet. It's a little pricey considering alternatives in the area but the food is good enough to justify spending a little more.

The restaurant is nicely done inside, and I question the outside seating that's all concrete with not a lot of green in the middle of Pottstown. We were celebrating my birthday here. The company was wonderful as always; the food was just ok. There was no Brazilian fare, no feijoada...There was chimichurri but it seemed like upscale Mex, and not so special. We started with the guacamole, which was very different, almost "whipped" texture. It would have been a beautiful presentation in a rustic molcajete with chips. I had the chicken mole. The plate presentation was okay, the mole was tasty, and the side of the beans was so small, perhaps just a 1/4 cup if that. The steak fajitas were nothing special- and thought that chain Mex does a better job. The salad- awful, no beautiful mixed greens or accoutrement- a little garnish would have made a difference. The complimentary margaritas were "virgin", or so they tasted that way. Sincerely hope that this little place listens to its customers and gets over the initial opening lumps and bumps- it has the potential, it just needs to meet and exceed diners expectations!

the restaurant looks beautiful but without consistently great food it won't last in pottstown, especially at these prices. only one of the five entrees we ordered came with a salad. it wasn't even the most expensive of the dishes we ordered. i found that very strange. it was one of the sorriest salads i have ever had in a restaurant. there was no homemade mexican style dressing. what upscale mexican restaurant serves thousand island dressing? there was old looking lettuce, one tiny tomato, and a teaspoon of corn salsa on the salad plate. the mole sauce on the chicken mole needed salt. the chicken portion was very tiny ($18 entree). the meat portion with the fajitas was tiny. there was barely a teaspoonful of pico de gallo to accompany the fajitas. the guacamole appetizer was very good. the beans accompanying the meals were also very good. our server was also wonderful. they were sold out of flan for dessert so we left without and went out for ice cream instead. we felt that the quality of the food compared to chilis. these are not chilis prices, however. we will continue to go to los aztecas for mexican food. their food tastes better and is much less expensive.

WORST experience I have ever had at a restaurant: We had made reservations for 7 last Sat night, and they seated us on time. That was the best part of the night. If I didn't know better, I would have thought it was their first night being open. We waited 30 minutes literally for water. We kept asking our waitress for water, chips & salsa every time she walked by us, and she kept saying it's coming. Side note - There were only 2 waitresses working and the place was full. If mgt is reading this, you NEED a bus boy/girl. That would have helped the 2 overwhelmed waitresses out tremendously.... Anyway, when the water finally came about 40 minutes later we figured we better get our order in. So we waited another 30 for our aps. Wedge salad, and Guacamole. The wedge came out with like a tablespoon of dressing, and the guac came with like 10 chips. Soooo, I asked who I assumed was the manager for more chips and blue cheese dressing & water ( he looked like he didn't know how to handle anything ) Looked scared to death... About 15 minutes later he brings us water, and says the rest is coming ( I guess it was beneath him to walk in the kitchen and grab chips & blue cheese. By the time it arrived we were all pretty pissed, and just wanted to get our entrees and leave. Entrees came, and only thing wrong was my wife ordered their SIGNATURE Anniversary Filet ( which is on the home page of their website ). So it comes out with NO goat cheese, and my wife asks why and she says " oh, we are out of it " Hello, maybe it would have been a good idea to tell her that when she ordered, that is her fav part of the dish??? No chips & salsa ever came even though we asked 5 times. When we were getting ready to leave they were giving them out to everyone who was being seated at the time. Food was ok, nothing special to me. After 2 hours the nightmare was over, and we were all happy to get out of there. With all of that being said, the worst part for me was watching the manager not helping the girls out at all - They were obviously overwhelmed, and he didn't care. We made eye contact multiple times, and he knew things weren't going well, he didn't care at all. In a place like that the mgr should be walking around asking how everything is, nope not him. If I owned the place I would fire him ASAP. My wife told us about other negative reviews about how horrible the service was, and I said well you can never believe everything you read on the internet. They could be written by local competitors, well they are not. They are all TRUE.

Wonderful dinner!! We have been to Juan Carlos in the past but not since their menu was redone in the summer. Being a vegetarian I was happy to see a vegetarian section on the menu. Who would have thought of falafel in Mexican food but the falafel enchiladas were incredible! Very filling so I will be enjoying leftovers tomorrow. We brought our own tequila and really enjoyed a pitcher of margaritas with dinner. We will definitely be coming back again soon!

Very nice decor. I was less impressed with the food. Maybe I was expecting more fine dining when what came out was more takeout style Mexican. The chicken was moist though! pottstownprovisions.com/…

They charge $5 for chips refills. The food is mediocre with a nice atmosphere. Seems they spent more of the budget on the decor then on the food and customer service. Will not be back.

Food is great, ambiance is great, love this place. We're local and come here semi-frequently. 4 instead of 5 stars because I really want to see them add a new dish or two to the menu. Keep up the good work - you're an asset to the downtown area.

Hands down the best restaurant in Pottstown. The menu is small but each dish is always made to order and comes out perfectly and don't forget the mojotios and margaritas! Staff is always always friendly and attentive.

Walked in and it looked like a typical Mexican restaurant but the newbie wasn't that great and way to pricey.... The waiter took so long to come to the table... So we walked out..

We tried Juan Carlos last night for the first time. I've lived in Mexico and Mexican cuisine is my favorite, so I wasn't sure what to expect after checking out the reviews on here. They all seem to be old, so maybe things have changed? First, the restaurant is NOT cash only as several of the "tips" say. Second, we had great service and the decor and atmosphere was really nice. It was a Thursday and not all that busy, but the chef came out to check on us as well. We ordered the queso appetizer, which came with homemade tortillas. That was delicious. The one note I would give the restaurant was that the chips and salsa weren't amazing, so I'm glad we got the queso. My husband ordered the enchiladas de marisco (seafood) and I got the East LA Taquitos de puerca. My husband makes seafood enchiladas at home and is a pretty discerning critic but he loved them and my tacos were so good. The pork was killer. They really didn't need so much rice and beans on the side because we were both full from our main dishes but I know people like that stuff so I wouldn't fault them for it. We will definitely be going back and trying some different things off the menu. Hopefully you'll give them a chance!

I absolutely LOVE Juan Carlos! I currently live in Chicago and come to Pottstown to visit family, and every time I do I make sure to come here. While there is always a bit of a wait for food (that's what happens when everything is homemade), it's always worth the wait. The margaritas are top-notch (it is BYOB- so take note) and everything is good from the appetizers to the main meal. I always get the chili relleno - fried, spicy, filled with cheese, and with an amazing sauce - it's my favorite thing on the menu! I always have some the second day because I can't stop eating the delicious chips and guacamole. I highly recommend for a relaxing night out, where you can spend some time drinking and eating. It's fun to go in a group and try each other's meals as well so you don't miss anything! The desserts are amazing as well (best tres leches cake I have ever had) and worth taking home for later if you can! Very personal service, everything is fresh - it could not be better!

I loved this place and was sad that there weren't more people. I had the chicken chimichanga, and it was awesome! I could tell the chef takes pride in his food, as the chicken was organic and tasted super moist and fresh. The black beans were also very tasty. And the chips and salsa were awesome. I will definitely return again!

Nice place with good food. Friendly atmosphere and BYOB. Willing to modify dishes to accommodate your individual taste......just ask. Homemade food made to order, not processed like chain restaurants. Only drawback is cash only.

Nice, well-priced BYOB with an interesting "upscale" Mexican menu. They always have good vegetarian options. Try the garlic shrimp - it's always great with fluffy crispy bread to sop up all the excellent sauce. Mexican egg rolls are also excellent. They have a nice patio outside for nicer weather. We hope to see Juan Carlos stay in downtown Pottstown for a long time!

My wife would not stop talking abou this place. Unusually nice place for this area. BYOB. Staff is incredibly nice. The food is very good quality. "Fine Mexican Cuisine" is very accurate. Not your typical Mexican restaurant.

This past weekend my wife and I ate here with our neighbors. First off I want to say that the decor in the place is really great. The light fixtures are nice and the downlighting around the walls gives a gentle feel. While we were there they had a person playing acoustic guitar. It was fantastic in that we didn't notice for about 30 minutes that it was live music...but we had been commenting on how nice the music selection was. Really, it was just the right balance of entertainment and ambiance. Our server seemed a little light on experience, but was certainly enthusiastic about the menu and seemed to know it fairly well. We were brought chips and salsa. The salsa was tasty though the chips seemed to be perhaps a day old. (As a side note, lately it seems to be a recurring issue lately at places I've been...or do I just have a wrong expectation for fresh tortilla chips?) We had brought with us a bottle of wine and a bottle of tequila. Having called ahead we confirmed that this was a BYO and they offered that if we brought tequila they would make margaritas for us (more on this later). They opened the wine for us but never brought or offered an ice bucket (it was a white). We shared two appetizers, guacamole and empanadas. I only had a small bit of the guacamole but it was quite good and our neighbor who is a big guac fan was raving about it...even continuing to eat it after entrees were done. The empanadas were very nice and seemed freshly prepared. The beef in them was well seasoned and had olives in them as well. The texture of the pastry was just right and the avocado cream had excellent tang to it. For entrees I had the chile relleno and my wife had pork enchiladas. The relleno was a generous portion stuffed with cheese and seasoned beef (similar to that in the empanada). The tomato sauce with it was a great complement. If I'm being nit-picky there could have been a touch less cheese melted on the whole outside of the chile, but I'm not one to ever say there is too much cheese...so I won't. The black beans served with it were cooked to a nice texture with a bit of tooth still to them and a great flavor of smoky bacon infused in the sauce. Also well executed was the rice with it...great levels of seasoning and moisture. My wife rather enjoyed her enchiladas as well and our friends cleaned their plates of their entrees too (one had the pork tacos and I can't remember the other). Mid-way through the entrees the server noticed our pitcher of margaritas was about done and asked us if we wanted more. Since they were so tasty (with really no hint of that fake tang that often accompanies pre-made mixes) we agreed to another. For dessert we chose the flan. We were told that one of the owner makes it fresh daily. It simply was one of the best flans I've tasted. The caramel sauce accompanying it was perfect in sweetness, flavor, and consistency. The portion was a hearty size as well, certainly enough for two to share. The only real disappointment came with the bill. The food was all appropriately priced. We often enjoy Los Aztecas and while this was more pricey, it certainly earned the extra cost. However, we were a bit surprised to see a charge for the margaritas on the bill of $14.....per pitcher. There were two main reasons we were surprised. First, the fact that we are charged that much per pitcher just seems a good bit high to us. I checked with a friend who said she had recently done the same thing in a Philly restaurant and was only charged $6 per pitcher. Second, we were surprised that such a substantial charge was levied and we had never been told there would be any charge at all for the margaritas. In retrospect I suppose I shouldn't have assumed it would be gratis, but not once was it even hinted there was a charge. Had they told us up front we still would have ordered at least the first pitcher and possibly the second, but it is nice (and appropriate, I think) to give your patrons this information. It was unfortunate that we had to end what was a great meal otherwise on a somewhat sour note due to this. I would certainly return to the restaurant again, I just will limit my beverages to the wine I bring, or consider a single margarita (once I ask what the charge is by the glass, that is).

Very fine steak burritos. I really don't like burritos that much, but the steak they use here was of very good quality and it was quite tender. The cheese enchiladas were quite good so were the fish dishes I had. What I didn't like were semi-stale chips and bland salsa. (They will "kick it up a notch" if you ask.) Also, some of the food was not warm enough. They seem open to suggestions, so that is good. If you have a problem, I would let them know about it.

So . . . we have a FAVORITE Mexican restaurant in Pottstown that we totally adore - Los Aztecas. We saw that Juan Carlos had opened and it said "Fine Mexican Cuisine". Ok - we decided to see what they offered. Called today around 3:30 to see if they were open for dinner. I was told that YES they are open. We hopped in the car with a bottle of wine and were there by 4:00 pm. They were closed - door was locked. The sign on the door said lunch until 2pm and dinner starting at 5pm. Hmmm, that is why I called to check . . . ok, miscommunication. We went back at 4:45 and the door was open. The outside is still a bit under construction - however once you get inside it is lovely. We were impressed with the ambiance - the light fixtures were great, the colors were understated, the background music was appropriate. Not quite impressed that the disposable paper napkins were placed under the knife and spoon on the right. Should be on the left but perhaps in Mexico that is how it is done - not sure. Our server was very friendly and we liked her. Time to order - Ordered the suggested appetizer Beef Empanadas $12. First of all if you have a NUT allergy forget it. They don't tell you on the menu they have nuts in them so be careful. Frankly we liked the empanadas. They were really good with a bit of garlic, onion and cinnamon flavor - they were suppose to be served with Avocado Cream - instead we received mayonnaise with about an 8th of a teaspoon of avocado mixed in - I'm being kind. The tortillas they bring to the table are store bought purple and red chips with mediocre salsa - for some reason they added a ton of black pepper to the salsa today - not sure if that is standard but it was noticeable. Choice of soup or salad. Hubby had the salad - they had NO house dressing today - nothing like avocado vinaigrette or anything remotely Mexican - they had instead French, Ranch, Creamy Italian or Russian. Hmmm . . . odd for a fine Mexican restaurant but ok. Hubs had the Russian - salad was about a 2.5 out of 5 - the croutons were extremely stale. I had the Chicken and Rice soup - I had to add salt but it was good once I did. Entrees - Hubby had the Tacquito Puerco with a Tequila Cream Sauce. I ordered the Cuban Chicken - which I was told they did not have tonight so. . . . I ordered the Tilapia. On the menu it says the tilapia is lightly fried to a golden brown. Our server told us they were doing it a different way with poblano peppers. I thought I'd try it. Each entree was served with rice and black beans - also the choice of soup or salad. My tilapia was $18. It came out on a hot plate a tiny piece of tilapia apparently steamed - still in tinfoil wrapping with maybe 6 tiny julienne strips of peppers and a slice of tomato. It looked pretty bad. First bite it was bland. Extremely bland. Hubby's food was a bit better but the tortilla shells were not crispy and there was barely any cilantro. The tequila cream sauce was very spicy and somehow missing the cream. I will say they server asked how things were. Because she asked I told her the truth. The fish was bland. Someone who appeared to be an owner or a manager came by and asked how things were. I told her the truth also. The fish just did not look appetizing - it was a tiny little limp piece of fish with grey streaks throughout it in a tinfoil wrap -took bites but it had no flavor at all. In their defense they did ask what they could do to help - I suggested we add some fresh lime to the fish which they brought us. They also offered to comp us one dessert but neither of us wanted dessert. So . . . $54 later we left. I hope they get their act together and live up to their name of Fine Mexican Cuisine soon. Otherwise they will have a very lovely restaurant with not so good food and people will not go back. Has to be hard to get it together I'm sure and I hope they do. As for us, we will continue to support Los Aztecas which has NEVER let us down. Their drunken tilapia fish is the best I have ever had. And they make their own salsa and fresh chips, not to mention an avocado dressing for salads - included with the entrees - all of this for much less than half the price of "fine" dining. Good luck Juan Carlos. I do wish you well.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
