Excellent German Food. I visit the Newportville about five or six times a year. The complimentary pretzels and mustard are fantastic. I always grab a jar to go as well. You can't go wrong with the smoked pork chops or any schnitzel dish they serve. Everything is expertly cooked by their German chef. It's not too difficult to get a table even on a typical weekend. Sometimes they may have a 30-40 minute wait on a fall weekend evening. The beer selection is decent. I enjoy strong craft beers and they usually offer a few but most of the beers they offer are of the German ale variety. Quaint, colonial atmosphere. Friendly staff. I highly recommend it. Closed Mondays.

Newportville Inn , place is great . An awesome beer garden and old building from 1700's. Nice building like your in Germany Bar. When weather nice you can sit outside with Neshaminy Creek right next to it. It has about 20 Beers on tap and always different beers on tap. Nice place to take your friends , girlfriend or wife. And food is good too.

Great service at the bar. Great food and beer. The pork chop on the farmers feast was absolutely delicious, as was the pierogie special with pears and walnuts...sublime! Going back soon for more Oktoberfest goodies!

Decided to take mom to dinner at the last minute, they did their best to seat us as close to our requested 7:30 Friday night time. After a short wait we were seated and our server Eileen was very good, she kept our courses moving in a timely pace without feeling rushed . Food was very good with ample flavor & portions. Only negative was the parking. Did I mention it was the middle of Oktoberfest ? The guesthouse atmosphere reminded me of my years in Germany

I can't say that I know many places to get German food around here... but even if I did I'm confident Newportville would still rank high on my list. You've gotta be in the right mood for it, just like with any place, but if you're looking for some of the best wursts of assorted types, pork chops, schnitzel, potato pancakes, and pretty much anything else you associate with German heritage than this is the place to check out. Parking can be a bit difficult, but from what I've seen you can just park up top at the beer store. The food varies from pretty good, to good, to great. I can't say that I've ever had anything I didn't like there and the portion sizes will definitely satisfy even the biggest eaters. Though I don't really drink beer I've gone with people who do and they've been impressed by several of the offerings. These are some pretty picky folks too, so that's a good sign. Plus they had a cider on tap which is always a plus for me, but I didn't even need it because their Strawberry Lemonade Cocktail was fantastic. My sister is convinced it can be too loud. I honestly don't really remember that being a problem and if it is I'm sure it's only at prime time when anywhere you go is sure to be a bit louder.

Can't say I was a big German food fan prior to coming here, or even that I had much familiarity with it. But this place is quickly turning me into a convert. The setting is fantastic, right on the Neshaminy Creek with some nice outdoor seating. They have a number of tasty schnitzels and compared to the spaetzle I have had at other places, theirs is certainly a notch above. They also have an impressive selection of beers. Highly recommend if you are looking for German in the area.

Wonderful atmosphere, brings you back to the old world and staff is friendly and fast and treat their customers as friends....food is delicious, drinks are great and all in all a good time and a wonderful experience. They let you enjoy your meal without rushing you and the portions are big and the snapper soup is the best around.

Great experience here. It's dark and relaxed on the inside, which I don't mind. There is also an option for outdoor seating. I don't drink anymore, but noticed they had a very lengthy beer selection. I ordered the sauerkraut bites as an appetizer, which were fantastic and cheap! I've never had anything like them, so I was pleased. I also enjoyed the pretzels and house mustard. I kept it simple and ordered the wurst sampler, which was perfect. Most people would probably share it as an appetizer, but it worked for me as my main dish. It was all great! Service on point. I'd come back eventually. I'm a food explorer, so it may be awhile. ;)

My mom and I have long been on a quest to find German food as authentic to what she experienced living in Mainz. Newportville delivers on many counts! Pretzels and spicy mustard await on the table to preface the dining experience. While the sauerbraten wasn't our favorite the wurst platter and warm potato salad exceeded our expectations. The stand out sausage of the trio platter had the brightness of fresh lemon zest. The marinated bone in chops w sauerkraut are also a flavorful win. The pierogies would make my Bopcha proud. Newportville has a lock on libations from a great beer selection to the addition of crafty cocktails for the girly girl. My personal favorite was the smooth Philadelphian w Gin and elderflower. Lastly the history of the building is something to marvel at, having been there since the 1700s. A bit out of the way but definitely worth the trip!

This review is a bit past date- when we went to the Newportville, it was still warm enough to sit outside! A bit confused with the host staff when we approached, since they were not dressed any different than an ordinary guest. We kind of stood around, I whispered to my date "Do we seat ourselves?" and the host turned around and said "Oh, I'll seat you." So that was a bit odd. It was a beautiful day, so maybe they were just day dreaming! Our waiter was friendly, but felt either forced or new. Doesn't matter, he still did a great job and kept attentive. Great beer selection, and our food was awesome. Headed there again this weekend, plan to do an updated review!

Best German meatballs in the world I mean really worth trying. Clean comfortable restaurant with friendly staff and so many imported beers on tap then you can possibly imagine. I will definitely return and I will bring my friends . Who would have ever thought that this quiet little place served such exceptional food. Wow.. Hats off to the folks at the Newportville Inn. Can't wait to have another great Authentic German dinner at bucks county's best kept secret.

4 stars for a first time here. Great relaxing outdoor Terrance seating. The snapper soup is the best in area. A variety of desserts, although not all are made on premises. Even the coffee was appealing.

Absolutely fantastic german food! The staff is very friendly and beer knowledgeable! They always have new specials and everything is always fresh. We have never left disappointed. If you go on a warm day they have outdoor seating.

Hands down a must go for German food lovers! The sourbraten and pork chop dinners are among our favorites, always get extra red cabbage, that stuff is delicious! The beer menu always exceeds expectations, and we love the beer garden in the spring and the take out bottle shop on the premises.

Chelsea, outer waitress was attentive and had a great attitude. The food was only second to service. We had the Germans combo. Be prepared to slip into a meat coma. Amazing food melt in your mouth tenderness. I wish i lived closer. You would be amiss if you didn't at least try this place once!

This place has the best schnitzel and sauerbraten I've ever had at a restaurant. Though good German food is not often found in the area, I love going here and getting their delicious dishes. Entrees are a bit pricey, they give you a ton of food, and almost all of it is good. (The only bad thing I've had here was a lackluster, dry pork chop). Their spatzle is awesome and traditionally made. They used to have a chicken spatzle soup that was possible the best item they serve, and I wish it was a permanent thing rather than a soup du jour. Not to mention their signature super spicy mustard and pretzels, which are placed on every table, that are so delicious I fill up with them quickly. It's not without flaws though. The building is old and cramped, and needs a renovation because it's so poorly designed. There aren't many seats either, so if you go on a Saturday be prepared to wait a long time. However, I can live with those problems as long as they keep serving superb food.

  • Matt S.

The food here is great. They have pretzels and house mustard (which is awesome) waiting on the table. The only negative I have is that the house salad is weak. Iceberg lettuce, a couple cherry tomatoes, and some shredded carrot. No biggie though. The schnitzel, in every form I've tried, is awesome. You can't go wrong with the wurst sampler, and the German meatballs are great too. I didn't see it on the menu tonight, but a couple years ago they had a beer cheese soup that I could have drank by the pint until I was sick. I love the outdoor area when the weather is nice. The service is always pleasant. The food is heavy so be prepared to walk away full.

Service was great. Very tentative to our needs and kept a constant eye on the table. Had soup and appetizer and both very good. Two of us had culture food and was ok. Our special guest had the salmon special and it was horrible. Sauce actually tasted burnt. Not impressed when the special was so bad

The food was amazing, great beer selection. There was a lot of seating options. Bar, several dining rooms, outside porch and garden. The food took along time and I had I to ask the waitress to go ahead and put our entrees in because we would have been there for hours if she waited till our apps came out. It was all delicious.

Solid food, well made and fit within the German cuisine. In an area with more than their fair share of German establishments, this is one place I would return to again!

The perogies are awesome, so are the german meatballs. They always have a nice selection of german beers on draft. There is a patio so on a cool day its nice to sit outside. They have a very unique growler they sell, everywhere I bring it people complement me on it. This place is a hidden treasure of bucks county.

Im a frequent visitor here and I can say that I always get exceptional service. The beers on tap are great, especially if you like craft beers, and the food is outstanding (my favorites are the pierogies and german meatballs)! The outside seating is great, especially during the summer.

All The Saxon Ladies (all the Saxon ladies): A Review Alack! How cam'st I to have neglected to praise my favorite German restaurant? Well, my friends, it's time to set things right. Please join me in a close reading of why Newportville is the best: The food is bountiful and delicious. I can't recommend the "Farmer's Feast" enough. It has a smattering of several wursts, sides (like red cabbage and potato pancakes!) and other carnivorous delights. The only thing better than the Farmer's Feast is if you come during Oktoberfest and order the Oktoberfest special. It's includes all of the same gluttonous ecstasy as the Feast, except with extra stuff. I have deducted a star from their rating for the most trivial of reasons--but it's important to me. They used to give you, with your salad, what I termed the Tri-Dressing Container (slightly evocative of the Tri-Wizard Tournament). Liberating you from having to make a high-stakes decision, that of which dressing to choose for your salad, without due consideration, the Tri-Dressing Container gave everyone at the able all 3 dressings--Italian, Lemon Poppy, and Something Else. You could defer your decision or mix and match. They, within the last couple of years, have retired this genius construct and now force you to make a decision in advance. The reasoning: h1n1 concerns. I don't even know what that means. I have mad mixed results in begging or flattering my way into them bringing out the container, which still lives in their kitchen. In short: bring back the Tri-Dressing Container and I shall restore your star! Oh yeah: service is good, beer is good, ambiance is nice, yada yada. Bring back the container! Highly recommend.

Not a bad place to end a bachelor party weekend! We showed up as soon as the restaurant opened and proceeded to order from the mighty selection of brews. The food was really good. I believe the table favorite was the Best of the Wurst. Lots of sausage was consumed. Lots of it. I highly recommend buying their custom mustard!

FANTASTIC! Great food and drink. Polite attentive service and treasonable prices. I can't believe it took us years to find out about it. Just WONDERFUL. We will become regulars!!!!!

Good prices and portions and really good German dishes. Now I am not German so I can't speak to the authenticity but my goulash was flavorful with tender cuts of beef and buttery egg noodles and my liverwurst pate was savory and creamy. Service was very friendly and they have a wide selection of Oktoberfest drafts on tap. If you're really thirsty, get a growler for $12. I was happy with my hofbrau but some days you just need a little extra...

Me and my German roots LOVE this place. Cozy, good service, and great German fare. The bar area is always jumping, the dining room is always full and the new outdoor patio looks like a fabulous place to sit and drink the afternoon away. Growing up with grandmother who only cooked German dishes has made me very aware of what is genuine and what is not. While the German dishes can't compare to my g-mom's home cooking it definitely is authentic and tasty. I have never ever had anything off of the menu that I felt was sub par. Rouladen, Goulash, and different Deutsche wursts are just a few of the dishes that make up the menu. Don't fret.... they also have an great selection of non-German dishes including fish, chicken, and an assortment of hamburgers. Everything is always brought out fresh, hot, and perfectly seasoned. Don't forget to nosh on Oompa's Homemade Mustard, it is wunderbar! Of course, it being a German restaurant they have a myriad of beers from the great country that gave us Octoberfest. So macht schnell and get yourself over to the Newportville Inn....Ja wohl!

I always thought Newportville Inn was just a bar, but it's not. They also have really good German food. Who knew. The German appetizer sample with bratwurst, onion and apples is awesome. The steaks and crab cakes are excellent too. Prices aren't too bad... $18 for filet mignon AND a crab cake is reasonable to me.

  • Renee M.

Farmers Feast (smoked porks chops, braised red cabbage, etc) is out of this world! Very large portion reasonably priced. Everyone knows this place for its crab cakes but there is so much more. Years ago I first tried gator bites here and they were killer. Shrimp remoulade are delicious. They used to have Jack Daniels steaks, not sure about that now. Happy hour is laid back and you can actually carry on a conversation! Interesting drink specials.

Didn't have any expectations because we have never been there before. Didn't even realize they served German food. But was very pleasantly surprised! Our waiter was very friendly outside area was very nice to enjoy our delicious food. Potatoe pancakes were delicious and beer selection was awesome! Was impressed they even let us go inside to finish our beers and brought us our check inside when we started getting annoyed by bugs . Would definitely go back!

Went during oktoberfest and may i say kinda gross. For a place that is supposed to be considered german based they may wanna hire a new chef. The wurst plate was the least to say mediocre..(to the chef: make your own sausage not buy shitty stuff from whatever purveyor you order from. ) I made a 45 min trek to this place and def not worth it. Average food at best. a littel hard to see from the road...you can see the building but a sign was non existent at night time.

First time that I have tried them and I will definitely go back. We were a party of three and we were all impressed. The food and wine selections are really good. The large bar offers many varieties of beer and worth checking out. They feature both American tavern food and traditional German fare. They bring sourdough pretzel nuggets to dip into their famous homemade mustard and is it addictive! ( cleans out those sinuses too! ). I had the crab stuffed mushroom caps, which were to die for and they are very different. They have a little mustard, are sweeter and the stuffing is not full of bread crumbs, but crab meat. I then had the filet and crab cake with bearnaise sauce, baked potato and mixed fresh veggies, all so very good. The bearnaise was not the best I have had, it was thin and no tarragon taste, but it was okay. The steak was cooked perfectly and it was tender, juicy and delicious! My friend had the potato pancake appetizer which was prepared and served like potato skins. Thank heavens she shared! They were hot potato pancakes, fried golden brown, stuffed with sour cream and then topped with cheddar cheese and bacon! Yum and another reason I will return! She then had the filet and plain potato pancakes, wow, you can never have too many potato pancakes, especially when in a German restaurant! My husband had the smoked pork chops, which he raved about along with the potato pancakes and cooked sweet & sour red cabbage. He just kept muttering, we're coming back here. I am anxious to go back and try the same things and more! The building is old and the setting of the restaurant is German. The windows have flower boxes on them and shutters to make you feel like you are dining in Germany. Service was very attentive. In the same parking lot they feature a specialty beer take out store. Inside at the cozy bar you can also watch your favorite sports on the screens.

Have been here twice and both visits were enjoyable. Great beer selection and now that the weather permits, sitting outside is enjoyable. We usually go with friends of ours so we try to order different things and share. Loaded Potato Pancakes, Fried tomatoes, and their crab dip are so delicious! Tried a bistro burger recently which was a short rib/ground mix, very tasty with a nice cold beer! And their German specialties are also very good. Moderately priced, nice feel to the place, great service.

Tonight the the office staff and Dr. met here for some drinks and food. I suggested we go here since-) years back I had enjoyed the food and atmosphere here. We were especially interested in going (instead of the closer bar/restaurants) since it is nonsmoking. We just had the appetizers along with our drink but everything we ordered was phenomenal! The building itself has so much personality! It is a quaint little place to go on an evening out. It just may have been because we kept the waiter hopping but I did feel service could have been a little bit better.

I recently went here for a birthday dinner. I wanted german. My parents obliged and I had heard good things so reservations were made as it was a saturday night we were off. I came to find out later that my mother had called ahead and had a cake readied for the occassion. Upon arrival were were led through a few rooms to one right near the kitchen...not exactly my idea of a great table but hey I was with my family. So our waitress came and went with a demeanor of an angry water gnat she was gruff and unfriendly and honestly looked bored and pissed off. If you needed a question ask quick for she would be gone in a light run from the table. So skipping her we focused on the menu the 5 of us all ordered different thins and 2 shared apps. the apps were ok but lacking in some of the featured ingredients such as the corned beef in sauerkraut bites, but came out promptly followed by our soups and salads. The bread had seen better days and had apparently met up with an angry supermarket bagger to be cut as it was well manhandled, squished and balled into the wooden salad bowls from the 70's. So onto our main course.......................I wish I could put a period for every minute we waited for our dinners to arrive but then we would be here for awhile something close to and hour and 20 minutes between salad and main course and then it only came after we asked (to be fair the waitress had come by at the 1 hour mark to say our meals would be up in a minute, wish she had defined her definition of a minute) so out come the entrees and she no longer knows who ordered what and we had waited so long neither did we. Plates arrive and we see a ton of sauerkraut and no other sides as was promised by our menu. When asked we were told oh we ran out....hmmm if we had been served our meals in proper time would we have had those sides??? Upon going to get one of our party from outside since it was so warm they were lightheaded I went to round a corner from our table to sliding across the floor and nearly landing tail over tea kettle and would have had a buss boy not grabbed my arm helping to keep me upright. Now I have assorted hardware in my legs so any fall near or not is potentially hospital laden. When I raised my voice the staff tried to hush me by literally saying hush up and making hand signals....My father declared we were when none was offered a sub for the missing accompaniments until called on the carpet for it and then do you really want cole slaw with your schnitzle? Not me! So he asks for the check and yet another kitchen staffer comes by and says its taken care of. My father insists on paying. Tells us to gather our things and go. Upon starting to do so the staff points out that the door to our left is a direct path to the front door (remember back they led us through the other rooms to get us here...why???) so we were off thank god! Others that were waiting I felt bad for, do I or don't I warn them of the hellish experience they were about enter? I still need to wrestle with that question for future experiences. and I guess an apology is in order for not warning them to run fast, run far and that a meal from a drive thru would have been a better experience. Next time I want German I will NEVER visit the Newportville Inn and caution anyone else of going there as well!

The Newportville Inn is great! Great Food, great beer selection, great service, great mustard (which you can buy to take home with you), and No Smoking! All in all, this is a great place to go for either a few drinks, or as much as a nice, semi-formal dinner. Great menu

I have had many meals at the Newportville Inn, and they have always been delicious. It is a great place for a few beers or a casual night out. However, I was compelled to right this review in the hopes that management will see it and hopefully make some changes in the kitchen. I was at Newportville last night with my family, and I pulled a hair of my plate of filet mignon. I really don't like to make a scene in a restaurant, so I gave them the benefit of the doubt and thought maybe it was my own hair. The rest of the meal was just as good as it always is there. My sister ordered the Weiner Schnitzel, and she brought home leftovers. I just heated it up to eat for lunch, and I found not one, not two, but three hairs! Now I am certain they came from the kitchen. This is incredibly gross, and I am horrified to think what my family and I digested last night. I honestly really enjoy coming to the Newportville Inn, but I am definitely wary to order food from there again.

I went to the Newportville Inn last night for my sisters rehearsal dinner. I have been here plenty of times before as well. The food is always good and they definitely have some specialty German beers that you won't find in many other places. Generous portions, great service, and reasonable prices. They just put a beer garden in at the restaurant too. EP Henry block with a fountain in the middle of it. The menu referred to Sundays in the beer garden for homemade Sangria and Grilled Kabobs. I'll have to check it out on a Sunday some time in the near future when the weather is behaving.

The Newportville Inn is a wonderful dining experience for families, friends, and anyone looking for a dining experience that is just a little out of the ordinary. At first glance, the prices of the Newportville Inn might scare away some diners who are nervous about shelling out at least twenty dollars a person for a new dining experience, but the amount of food that you'll be getting (and will reheat nicely at home) makes the price seem downright reasonable. When you arrive at your table, you'll find a large glass filled with pretzels, accompanied by a spicy mustard. Both of which taste great, but as I was glancing around the restaurant, I did notice that these are all preset in the table, which at least allowed the thought to enter my mind that they may not always put fresh mustard on the table between parties. This created a double dipping nightmare in my mind, and did a number on my desire to eat the pretzels. The menu itself is slightly difficult to get through, however, near the back a glossary of German culinary terms is available to help guide you. I greatly enjoyed my Gypsy Schnitzel, and everyone in my party was equally satisfied with their meals. Before your entree and salads arrive, you'll also be given a plate of bread, ensuring that just as if you were enjoying a meal at someone's home in Germany, you aren't going home hungry from the Newportville Inn.

Have eaten there many times and have always enjoyed it. We have a tradition to go during the Oktoberfest. Really enjoy the German entrees and snapper soup. Also the German beers on tap. Great little place. Can't wait to go back.

I'm not much for German food, but my family has taken me here numerous times and I have no complaints. The old building and interior gives it a lot of character which is fantastic especially if you are used to the over done decor of TGIFridays. The food is unique and flavorful, and coming here is always a pleasure.

TOO HOT to enjoy anything...service ok but needs to be way better...I just realized they never brought out the bread w/our entrees...other waitress forgot about the table near us and they only had burgers, and she was seen coughing into her hand several times..food `ok`. Got an attempt at but not what I asked for for a simple menu alteration...I will NOT be going back anytime soon there are too many other places to go...nice beer selection on tap, martinis small & kiddie glass sized..
