Downtown Media has a great scene for local restaurants with good food and Spasso is no exception. There's a good number of Italian options in the region, so to rate this as high as I did is pretty good. Authenticity and Quality help this standout amongst the other dining competitors in Media for a night out on the town. Atmosphere - Spasso has both indoor and outdoor dining for your party, but our group decided to go with a small table for four inside near some of the old windows looking out to the street from frosted glass windows. Tables were neatly set in a well lit dining area. Outside diners have the option of eating at the location right off of State Street, or in a private dining area outside on the terrace blocked off from the rest of State. This location for Spasso used to be the old downtown bank building in Media, and they've done a good job renovating. Waitstaff - Our waitress was really nice and recommended some high quality dishes. Each waitress is supported by a runner who brought bread, water, and assisted with bringing out entrees for our meal so that everything was done in an orderly fashion. She gave the impression of a family field, even recognizing us when we have never been there before? Just good to break the ice and enjoy some of the great food. Food - We started out with the appetizer for the grilled calamari. This is one of the best ways I've ever had calamari, as the smoky grill flavor with the lemon and light butter sauce was absolutely amazing. My compliments to the chef on a job well done. Other diners enjoyed a cup of white bean soup which came with their meals that they also said was very flavorful and hearty. Our entrees were also very good, as I went with a Chicken Fontadina, which had roasted red peppers, asparagus, tomato, and lightly breaded chicken in a sherry sauce. Overall it was very good for eating healthy, but I may try another option next time I go. One other diner went with a tomato and mozzerella salad which she said was a bit oily, but got a side of spinach risotto which she said is quite possibly the best she's had. This seems like it was kind of hit or miss on the entrees, so I would suggest staying with what you know you like on a first visit, then expand you palatte for future visits. Intangibles - Does not take reservations, so you can have a significant wait if you go to dine late or for a special offer. At 6:00pm on a Friday, we had no issue with getting there. Parking is at a premium so prepare to park, not sure about the meters for Fridays, but weekends should be free for those coming into town. There is a main location for Spasso in Philly, so if you've been to the one in the city, the menu is equally the same. Not a BYOB like many places in Media, they do offer wines by the bottle or glass if you'd like one with your meal. Overall - A solid choice for Italian cuisine in Media. Seems like if there's a bad restaurant in town, it doesn't last long with all of the local competition. Would be a great spot to dine at if you're considering taking in a show at the Media Theater for a night out. Spasso maintains a downtown feel in the suburbs, and the quality of the food their putting out should be a stop at least once during your travels in town.

Had a great launch there today! Friendly service, awesome food, and fair prices. I will definitely be going back!! I went back for dinner and enjoyed it as much as I did the first time. I wanted the risotto I saw on the lunch menu, but it was not on the dinner menu. I talked to the server, and he made it happen. I like the atmosphere too. Yes, it is kind of loud at dinner, but it just kind of fits the swag this place has. Hopefully,i will get back again soon.

First - very unprofessional service. The wait person rushed us from the first minutes we arrived. Toward the end of the meal, she actually pulled the half-finished dinner plate from another guest. She also cleared half of the table and left one diner eating alone. It was some of the least professional service I have ever observed. The food was fair at best. While edible, it was entirely uninspired and ordinary. We will not return. This place is not cheap. Considering everything it is very overpriced.

Very slow service. Noisy inside. Good food. Better places to dine in Media. Friday night around 8:00 PM we arrived. Since they don't take reservations, we needed to wait. No problem, it was a nice evening. We sat outside - nice view of street scene. We gave our appetizer and entree orders at the same time. I wouldn't say they were busy but It took over 30 minutes to get our appetizer. It wasn't a special order - just a large plate of mixed antipasti. We asked for a second basket of bread mentioning to the server we were anxiously awaiting our appetizer. They served bruschetta with the bread, BTW. My daughter finally found our waiter and complained. Another 10 minutes and it arrived. It was very good but 30 minutes for a cold platter? We went inside to have our entrees because it was getting chilly. Another 30 minute wait for our entrees. I don't know why but it was extremely noisy - very difficult to talk. By that time it was about 9:00 and about half full of diners. Usually a place with high ceilings doesn't have such a problem. The veal parmigiana was good as was the gnocchi gorgonzola. The veal porcini was good. The fish special was fresh and tasty. fish special Desert was OK at best. I have tasted better creme brulee - it was room temperature and did not taste like it was scratch made. The cannoli was nicely decorated and tasty. Overall, a so-so experience. The staff was either inexperienced or clueless as to our needs. Do not sit inside if you don't like noise.

Ended up here on a Friday just as a walk in. We were able to get seated immediately (which isn't easy for Media) but were brought into this tiny room in the basement with no windows and so full of tables they have to be breaking a fire code. The food was really good, but we couldn't really have a conversation because the sound from the 16 other people shoved into the 10 by 10 cement room was so loud. I'd definitely go back because all four of us had outstanding meals but insist on not sitting in that room of lost souls (or just people without reservations).

I went to this place with the wife we had the calamari appetizer, clams linguini, & crab and shrimp linguini. All of the food was very tasty. If I go back and the food is of the same quality my review goes from three to four stars.

With great anticipation, we went there for dinner Saturday night. They don't take reservations so we made sure to get there around 6:30, just as the early birds were leaving. Immediately seated at our cramped table, we waited about 10 minutes before our drink order was taken. Some 10 or so minutes later, we ordered dinner. I had high hopes for Spasso but they were quickly dashed when the appetizers arrived. Stuffed artichoke where they used the inedible outer leaves of the artichoke? Caesar salad with no anchovies? Not an auspicious beginning... Our main courses arrived. I got the veal parm. One piece was decent but the other piece was so thin it was way overcooked - looked and felt like cardboard. The accompanying pasta tasted old and was very undercooked. An Italian restaurant that cannot cook pasta properly?!?! Wow! Wine list is cheap and thin. No draft beers. My cosmo was quite good, though. All in all, a very meh meal. I expected more.

One of my favorite places in Media! They have great fried or even grilled calamari. Large portions and they don't over cook it. It's hard to find a place that does calamari well. We always enjoy our entrees here and had thought of this place as pricy for some reason but it really isn't. I think the building itself exudes a stateliness that feels expensive but have no fear. Spasso has better food quality than Iron Hill hands down!! Inside there is a beautiful ambience in the giant tall windows ornate woodwork of the past..,all updated. A wonderful addition to the media food scene. Dine in their courtyard and it feels as though you are far away in Italy. Love it here!!

I usually need to go to a particular restaurant 3 or 4 times to formulate an opinion. Each of our visits to Spasso in Media, Pa have been super. We usually go with 4 to 6 people, so we can get a pretty good overview on all aspects of the menu. The food, service, and the overall appearance of the restaurant are all excellent. The prices are moderate, and the servings are ample. You may especially want to consider a Weds night between May and Sept, for the Media Dining Under The Stars experience.

This place was outstanding. Service was spot on. Kid friendly. Excellent food. Veal and crab entree was awesome. Linguini Putanesca was off the chain. Loved the escarole and beans side dish. Atmosphere is perfect. Will be back next month.

Delicious pasta served in gourmet dishes. Service is warm and friendly. If you're looking for a unique Italian gourmet meal which is not the run of the meal spaghetti and meatballs-this is the place to go. Located in a restored Bank---quaint bar-nice outdoor dining on a side terrace.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED : Food was outstanding. Very good choice in terms of Italian restaurants! Gnocchi was awesome! Chicken Parmesan was GREAT! Everything perfectly seasoned, and done well! You may miss it if you're not looking for it! Inside is a great dark lit atmosphere! You won't be disappointed! 5STAR and worth every penny! Price is a little high but worth every cent!!

My husband and I dined at Spasso in Media last night. it was our anniversary dinner, and it was delicious. We had to wait about 25 minutes for our table, so we sat outside with our cocktails, and watched the throngs of people streaming in to the restaurant. The staff was busy, but efficient and friendly. we started with roasted peppers and arancini, which were delicious. For our entrees,I had the Chicken with a balsamic reduction and my hubby had the spinach ravioli. They were served piping hot and the grilled veggies on the side were done to perfection. Even with a slamming busy restaurant, our dinner was perfect. We finished with an eclair stuffed with vanilla gelato and tiramisu. we never get desert out. it was so good. Loved Spasso and we will be back!!

Went here for dinner last night for dining under the stars. We got there pretty early, around 5:45-6 and were seated right away. We ordered the bruschetta for an app, it was very good. I wish there had been more of it but at $6 I can't complain, I just love tomato and would have gladly eaten the whole plate by myself!....maybe next time. For our entrees I had the ravioli quarto formaggio and my fiancé had the fusilli lunghi. I LOVED my dinner, it comes in a delicious cream sauce. The portion was a nice size, I think it was 7 or 8 raviolis and I took 3 home, the sauce is very rich so its not something you would want to eat a huge portion of all at once. My fiancé said his meal was good too. Our waitress was very nice, a little slow, but that's to be expected on such a busy night. We also heard her pacify a rather drunk and obnoxious patron sitting near us in a very tactful way. My only complaint was that she said she had to take our app and entrée order all at once due to how busy they were. It would have been nice to have something on the table while we were picking our entrees since we were both very hungry, but she did space them out so at least everything didn't come all at once.

Best Italian food in Media. Fantastic from start to finish. Excellent service, lovely space. Try the grilled squid with lemon. Ask for the small version of the dessert sampler. Wednesdays any app, entree and dessert $35!

The service here was good. Its the food that will prevent me from returning. The veal parm was dried out and tasteless....come on, this is an Italian place, veal parm should be a go-to at any Italian place! I then noticed another Yelp reviewer had the same experience. They did take it off our bill and the managers were very happy we shared the feedback.

I haven't been to Spasso in a while because of traveling for work. We had dinner on Sunday the 23rd and just as before it was Amazing! My favorite bartender, Lena, is now a manager on Sundays and she was just as friendly and attentive as she is at the bar. It would be sad to lose her at the bar but she would make an excellent full time manager. She makes a great first impression upon your arrival (there is another woman who isn't as friendly and if you've never been there before kind of turns you off). We watched her take the time to greet everyone with a big smile and personally speak with each table regarding their food and service. She took the time to show us the table she had available and gave us the option that if we wanted to wait about 10 minutes she could give us a nice window table that was roomier. We thought that was definitely taking the extra step to make our visit more enjoyable. Our server was a brunette named Jill. She was very bubbly, nice, and made us feel at home. After telling us the specials she quickly served our cocktails and made us feel comfortable about taking our time to decide on dinner. Our meal was sooo yummy - order the special Seafood Strudel appetizer. Keep up the good work Spasso!

We dined there last week. It was busy but not a madhouse. We had drinks at the bar while we waited for a table. There were 3 bartenders behind a small-to-average sized bar. It still took 15 minutes to have our order taken and get a drink. Huh? The server was nice but inconsistent. The food was great, but I don't think I would go again. It didn't compare to the Spasso in Philly.

Although our server was attentive and the restaurant's ambiance is breathtaking, I really wish I had listened to the reviews of Spasso more and not eaten there....it wasn't worth my curiosity. Our reservation was made, and yet, we still waited an extremely long period of time to be seated (we even arrived almost 25 minutes early!). I completely understand being busy - but don't call it a "reservation" if you really mean "call ahead seating" The server was attentive and made sure we felt welcome, good job, Paul! The food was beyond "blah"...I shouldn't have paid so much for overcooked noodles...no lie, "overcooked" is an understatement! My boyfriend, who was the one who chose Spasso, ended up getting sick off of the food and "losing" his dinner before the night was through...he kept a smile on his face, but was definitely not feeling the dish. We had requested separate checks at the beginning of the meal and were told it wasn't possible, but that the staff would "assist in dividing up the check." That was fair enough....however, when the check arrived - it was dropped at the table and the server was gone! there was absolutely NO help whatsoever! I am torn between 2 and 3 stars....I liked the atmosphere, I liked the staff's attention, but the food was not worth the deduction in my wallet!

Horrible experience here. First off, they seated us in the basement. Second, there was a poor menu selection. We just got up and walked out. Waitress never came to our table. With all of the open tables upstairs they still chose to put us in the basement.

I really like this place and find the prices reasonable. It is also fairly easy to get seated and there is plenty of room to wait if need be. I've never dined a full meal here or sat in the main dining room but often go just for drinks and appetizers- my favorite is the grilled calamari. I like the outdoor seating which is elevated from the street, and the bar inside is spacious with a warm, rich interior. I'd like to see healthier, grilled, antipasto options on the menu and would then consider staying for dinner. Service is excellent and the waiter staff is very pleasant and accommodating.

enjoyed a terrific dinner "al fresco" last night for my birthday with the family. had a terrific evening and wonderful food. this is the 4th time my wife and i have been there and each time the food has been either very good or frankly great. had the Veal last night for the 1st time and it was tender and flavorful. the belvedere martini alongside it was even better. 2 issues to point out. lower the volume on the "sam and anna" show outside because it was annoying big time. secondly, either upgrade the mussels to the"prince edward" variety served at Ariana or drop them from the menu. that's it. what a great addition to the media dining scene

My wife was raving about their Caesar Salad, i tried i and it is good. My sister got their mussel and white wine sauce. It would've been great besides the fact that it was gritty. Every bite has a sand texture. We when during Dining Under the Stars so it was packed.

I don't know where these bad reviews are coming from. Took my Mom out for lunch. Service was amazing. The bread and pepper salad they serve you before your meal is fantastic, the bread tastes homemade. My Mom got the special, a seafood and pasta dish, with homemade long eggy noodles, it was fantastic. I ordered the chicken and artichokes in a blush sauce with penne. My pasta wasn't homemade, but it was very good and very filling for a lunch entree. At the end, we shared one of their amazing homemade desserts, a creme brulee cheesecake. It was absolutely perfect, one of the best desserts I've had in a long time. I can't wait to go back for dinner.

My first time experience: 6:30 PM dinner for my boyfriend's father's birthday. - We walk in to an empty restaurant, waitstaff, cooks, and hostess walk by us about 5 times, no "Hello we'll be right with you, etc." just a bunch of blank stares as they meandered into the dining room. Food: I had Gorgonzola Gnocchi, 7 out of 10. Pasta was good, cream sauce was very heavy. Not a big fan of their shrimp linguini, or their ragu. Tartufo dessert was ok, ice cream had a twinge of freezer burn taste to it. The rest of the desserts looked tasty. Service: Matt was a good server, but everyone else had these depressed looks on their faces. It just made for an unpleasant experience.

I'm a little surprised at some of the negative reviews because tonight was my 3rd time here and I've enjoyed it. I've had one Saturday night dinner, an early weekday dinner and then again tonight midweek for the $35 special of appetizer, entree and dessert. All visits have been splendid with really good service. My first visit was when they first opened, a few months later and then again tonight. The food has always been good and the portions are frankly, big. I must commend our waiter tonight , Connor. He effortlessly handled 13 people with speed, accuracy and finesse and he never appeared frazzled. Its rare too that a waiter know the menu to the degree he did; especially one this large. I was impressed and will be back.

Went in last night for Dining Under the Stars. My son and I did not have a reservation. We opted to sit at a high top in the bar area after learning from the hostess that they would be begin shutting down outside dining (I asked) in 20 minutes. We waited over 10 minutes for service and the person who took our drink order was not our waiter. During this time, I observed the hostess seating new guests outside, which annoyed me. I recognize that staff gets busy, but not paying attention to your section or saying a quick hello to a new table is a big no-no. I usually leave when this happens, but we were starving, so we stayed put. My wine seemed underpoured ( I'm a former bartender) our mussels red appetizer was poor in that they were dried out and small. Our dinners were ok. I will say, our server was very nice, I believe his name was Mike. Older gentleman, buzz cut and glasses- good menu knowledge- we had a few questions, engaging w my son, attentive once he began with us. I think if I went back, it would just be for cocktails. The bar atmosohere is warm and inviting and is very spacious.

Went for dinner last night (Saturday) and I ordered the shrimp fra diavolo. The shrimp was a bit off in flavor and was also tough to cut through. Not sure if it was cooked frozen or microwaved but it was very bad. Sadly the pasta and sauce wasn't much better. The service was very attentive to our needs though.

Would say 2.5 stars but had to curve up to 3. Bartender was alone and had to handle full bar at happy hour. Did ok to fair. Bread was fair. It's restaurant week so I got Caesar (HEAVY dressing -ok at best) , ziti in red sauce (ok - nothing special), and shrimp fra Diablo. The shrimp was cold, pasta over cooked. Choco mouse cake was tasty. All for 30 bucks. Decent price if food was up to usual standards.Red wine at happy hour was ok. This is the third straight time I've been disappointed here. Used to be the best Italian in the area. Not by a long shot today. Time to move on.

I was there 3/9/2013 with family and we all loved our meals. I got the Saturday night special which was a stuffed pork chop. My cousin got the puffed pastry appetizer for dinner which was more than enough to satisfy her. Daughter got the chicken parm and sister got the Veal Porcini. We sampled each other's dishes and agreed Spasso's is a place that exceeded our expectations.

Had a solid lunch experience. We were the only ones there, but food was better than expected. Bread service was lacking. Bread cold and caponata was under seasoned. Got a shrimp and white bean scampi type thing for an app that was pretty good. They sold it as rock shrimp (which they were not), but it was hot and flavorful. Got veal with porcini sauce as entree and it was good. They did indeed use dried porcini mushrooms. Nothing wrong with it. Wife got shrimp linguini with pesto cream sauce that she enjoyed a lot. Linguini was fresh pasta which was a nice surprise. Got a profiterole for dessert that was good as well. Chocolate sauce tasted homemade. Overall, good experience. I would return. Only knock is that I am pretty well versed in reading menus, and there was a lot of stuff on the menu that I had to Google or ask about. Difficult to read with little description.

Went to Spasso this past Wednesday night for dining under the stars. We ate inside since the weather was iffy. This is by far the LOUDEST restaurant I've ever been in. It was fairly packed but something about the design of this place just doesn't work. People were not talking loudly, but it sounded worse than an elementary school cafeteria. Upon arrival, we were greeted (and I use the term loosely), by a middle aged woman who mumbled something, grabbed a pair of menus and walked to a table as if we were supposed to know to follow her. Once seated our waitress came to the table in a reasonable amount of time to take drink orders. I have no issues with servers with thick accents, but her inability to speak clearly along with the background noise made it nearly impossible to communicate with her. She quickly brought us our $9 glasses (or should I say "shots") of house wine. She told us what the specials were. One of them was some sort of stuffed flank steak, which sounded good, so I ordered that. When I ordered she said "no, it's not flank steak, it's strip steak". My GF and I were both certain she originally said flank steak, but what the hell, I like strip steak too, so no big deal. When the food came, it was indeed flank steak. No doubt the meal was delicious, but man oh man, if you're going to correct yourself, be right when you make the correction. My GF ordered the crab ravioli. It was excellent. Any good Italian restaurant should have good bread. The only word that comes to mind here is "lame". Not horrible, but should be better. We did not get olive oil with the bread although we saw there was some on other tables. So we asked for some and the waitress literally turned around and took the oil from the people behind her and put it on our table. A WTF moment. Glad to have oil, felt sorry for the people at the other table. We ordered a second glass of wine. The waitress mumbled something and returned with two glasses of wine that were more sparse than the first two. At this point I felt compelled to say something. I asked if these were supposed to be full glasses of wine? She said NO, I had the bartender split it for you. Apparently she must have thought we got drunk on our first shot of wine and needed to regulate our drinking without telling us. Just to note. We are not big drinkers. Summary: with so many other good Italian options in the vicinity, I wouldn't ever go here again. Pros: delicious food Cons: loud dining room, poor and somewhat rude service, stingy drink portions for the price

My boyfriend and went here Friday for date night. The service was a little slow. We enjoyed the escargot appetizer and the tartufo for dessert.

We went tothe restaurant on a friday night. The place was empty. Three people in our party ordered the Friday special which was a Pasta and Scallop dish. It cost $29.95for this dish. One in the party had exactly 3 scallops in her dish and the other counter 4 in theirs. These were not the large sea scallops either, they were the tiny bay scallops. The other special with Basso Fish and pasta which had to be sent back because it was so salty it was inedible. What a disgrace! We should have stayed with the appetizers! We won't go back or recommend this place to anyone.

The wife and I were invited to a birthday dinner here a few days back during the " DUTS" (Dining under the stars) event which is held every wednesday during the summers. I never knew that this little piece of summer goodness existed and judging by the crowd, people love this place. The reason why I am giving it a 4/5 is because the ambience and atmosphere during the wednesday event was great, good food, good drinks and great outdoor seating. All the restaurants on the main street were sprawled out onto the street with little tables, live music and umbrellas. The food was good, I had the crab ravioli, very rich but delicious. Not the biggest drinks menu and prices vary from $15 to $25 per dish. I will be back this week and will try another place on this delicious strip!

My husband and I were so excited to finally get a night out without the kids. So on the Sunday of Labor Day weekend we decided to head to media for hopefully a nice dinner. We were extremely disappointed to see that most of the restaurants on state street were closed or closing early. After a few attempts at different restaurants we ended up at Spasso's. When we walked in we were greeted by a very nice girl who warned us that they are a little busier than normal and apologize for any wait we may have. We decided to sit in the bar area which was great. Nice atmosphere. Our waitress couldn't have been nicer. We didn't know how long we would be waiting for our food but we didn't care because we were enjoying a few drinks and liked not being rushed. To our surprise the food did not take long at all and it was all very good! We will definitely be going back!

We really like this restaurant, food close to our heritage, but this time we were extremely dissapointed with the service . We went today for a late lunch, around 2:30,was an empty place, maybe about five tables with customers. First, no hostess at the entrance, just a waitress passing by telling us that is going to take about 15 min.to be seated on an empty restaurant . Then she yelled at somebody to come at the entrance to deal with us. When that lady arrived she told us the same thing , to wait for 15 min.to be sated, while the restaurant and the terrace was absolutlley empty, no customers. Then I wasked if we can go outside have a table on the terrace, having a drink while waiting for service, but she said" no you can walk while waiting ". Really, like you have to prepare the drinks, we couldn't believe it! I have to say I used to recommend this restaurant to everybody at my work but not anymore! O

Nice atmosphere. Sat at the bar for apps and a glass of wine. We were greeted by a very friendly and helpful bartender, but soon after we were seated a young woman took over that seemed less than happy to help us. We ordered an antipasto platter, which was fine, nothing too exciting. I think "fine" sums it up.

I'm lowering my rating to 2 stars. In the past year, I've eaten here about 5 times because it's in my 'hood. But the pasta has been disappointing -- too al dente, sometimes over salted -- but salads are decent. The pepper thing is just blah. Service is always good, so it's a shame. Fellini is a better Media option for pasta, and Delco has other better Italian overall (Giampino's is good, Trattoria Giuseppe always consistently delicious despite the waits). It's a wonderful space, and I want to love it, so I hope the owners start reading reviews.

I have been to the location in Philly but this was my first visit here. The décor is modern and spacious, but lacks the old school feel of the original. Our waiter was very knowledgeable about the menu and attentive. The wine list is fare, but I would like to see a few more Italian wine offerings. We started with the fried calamari and it was by far the best in Media. Very fresh with a light breading, so you could actually taste the squid. The marinara sauce accompanying it was good as well. My wife choose the braciole, which is a special they have every Sunday. This was her first time having the dish, and it may be her last. The meat was a little tough, and the stuffing had a somewhat overpowering taste of spices, primarily rosemary, that threw the flavor off. I personally liked it, and ended up eating most of it as she ate my chicken parm. My dish was excellent. The chicken was tender and moist, with a very flavorful breading. I had a side of gnocchi with it and they were delicious. They were cooked just right, and were not too dense. All in all a great dining experience. It seems every time we go for Italian in Media we end up at Fellini's, but we will definitely be back to Spasso!

Standard food, poor service. I went with my family (5 top) and we were one of 3 tables there for dinner (it was Memorial Day). Our server was not only slow, but her was unfriendly. I've been a server so I understand a slow kitchen may not be a server's fault, but he was very rude. He would drop off a drink or bread and not say a word. Multiple times we tried to ask him for something but he ran away from our table so quickly that he didn't hear (or acknowledge) us. The food is good--nothing so good that I would say the wait and poor service were worth it. The waiter didn't even say goodby to us. A bit disappointed.

Finally went to Spasso after being told to by a friend repeatedly. Went there on a Wednesday night (Dining Under The Stars) in Media. Service was very fast and waiter was extremely knowledgeable, knew all the ins and outs of the specials, almost as if he cooked them. Food was delicious, fast and hot, and just the right amount. Slightly more expensive than your average Italian restaurant but it was worth it. Will only take reservations for parties of 8 or more.

Attending "Dining under the Stars" in Media this past Wednesday Night. What a great experience. The dining experience on the other hand, not so much. Our waiter was rude and pushy/rushy. I will give him the benefit of the doubt, although we had our reservations at 8:45 and looking around, it didn't seem to be that "busy". I ordered the gnoicchis with red meat sauce. SPECIFICALLY asking for them to be cooked firm. He assured us that is how they are made. Come to find out, They were not. In fact, they had a texture like mashed potatoes. Would not recommend.

Visited Spasso for an early (4 pm) dinner on a Sunday night. I haven't spent much time in Media but my initial reaction was that this restaurant is in a really cute area of town. If the weather had been a little better, I would have liked to take a walk around after dinner. One thing to note- parking is very limited in this area (we parked in a garage a few blocks away that was free on Sundays). Once arriving in the restaurant, I was impressed by how nice the space was-- it felt like an old mansion. This is also a great location for a group dinner. There were two parties of 10+ people in the room we were seated. Looking at the menu, there is a wide range of options- pastas, chicken, beef, seafood, as well as a number of vegetarian options. Again, another reason this would be a great place for a group. In addition, no entree was over $25 (cause you KNOW you have that guy in your family who orders the most expensive item when someone else is treating...) The meal started with some bread and this delicious mix of cold marinated vegetables (eggplant, squash, peppers). I could have eaten an entire plate of that! For my entree, I went with the crab ravioli in a cream pesto sauce and it was very very good. The stuffing in the ravioli was excellent and definitely was real crab (sometimes crab ravioli uses fake crab and it tastes nasty- not the case here). Overall, everyone at our table enjoyed their dishes, atmosphere was pleasant, and service was good: if I am looking for a place to get a meal in Media in the future, Spasso will definitely be on my mind!

Dined here twice recently. First time was a four star experience. Last time a two star experience. Pros: fresh pasta in appropriate portion sizes, willing to customize menu items, service is friendly and helpful. Creme brûlée was fab and I've heard the seafood is tasty. Cons: overpriced for the unsophisticated menu, cannot seem to handle a crowd, no reservations for small groups, one ladies' room for the whole place (they should make the two bathrooms unisex) Bottom line: a safe choice in Media, but it's easy to rack up a hefty bill for just an average meal.

Was planning on having dinner at Felinni's but there was an hour wait, so we opted to try Spasso's instead. Inside is very spacious, decor is warm, staff is welcoming and accommodating. Our server was very pleasant. Food was just OK though...nothing too special. I tried the Fettuccine & shrimp( which were pretty small). My daughter tried the crab ravioli w/ pesto sauce..and that was tasty. Bottom line...its a nice choice to grab Italian food in the area, but don't expect to be blown away.

Hands down best Italian restaurant I've ever been to. The service was incredible. Paul was our waiter and went above and beyond for our party of 13. They gave us a private room and it was exactly what we wanted! Every person in our party was overly pleased with their meals and we will be definitely going back soon!!!!

Even with the mixed reviews I had been wanting to try Spasso for over a year. Last night - a slow-as-heck Monday night was the night to do it. While this may be a truly 3 star place, I am giving them a 4 for the excellent service we got (along with $4 cape-codders) at the bar. The caprese salad was not the best - it was served with iceberg lettuce (who does that??) and was swimming in low-grade olive oil. For $5 on happy hour it was fine. Normally it's $8.50 and I would not order it again. (Which is a shame because I love a good caprese.) Bartender was cute and very personable also. Dinner was better - we were seated right away (dining room was only about 1/4 full) and our (young, pretty) server was perfectly fine. Food was actually great - veal with spinach and crab-meat served with al dente fettuccine. Large portion so I took 1/2 home. My friend had veal parm - which looked average. (Veal was deep fried underneath the sauce and cheese. Chocolate mousse cake was OK for dessert but the cappuccino was Excellent. I can certainly understand why some don't like it here as there are many unprofessional chinks in the Spasso armor. The dining room below the chair rail MUST be re-painted. It is a deep brown color and everywhere a chair has bumped there is a white chip out of the paint (looks bad). Also the female servers and hostesses tend to collect in a gaggle at the hostess stand or by the kitchen and chat (they were bored and it was slow ) - or out back for a smoke. Not truly a 4 star place - morel like 3, 3.5 but we had a great night and I am feeling generous. I'll be back for happy hour for sure.

Monday, April 30, 2012 - Noon - After nearly two years, council approved the sale of 1 W. State St by a 4-3 vote to restaurateur Claudio Sandolo. Sandolo also owns Spasso Italian Grill in Old City, Philadelphia. The building at State and Jackson streets previous tenant was Brodeur's Restaurant who vacated in Nov. 2009. Prior to that was The New Orleans Café. This building's history includes the post office through the 1960's and use as the borough hall into the 1990s. I previously dined here when Brodeur's occupied the space. I enjoyed the outdoor patio situated along the wall. The inside of Spasso is clean, bright, with brick-colored paint. I ate facing an opened semicircle doorway leading to additional dining space. I viewed two fans revolving from the ceiling where typically the iconic paddled ceiling fan would rest. I ordered the escarole soup and pork sandwich. While waiting, I was served delicious complimentary bread with a dish of roasted peppers (red and green), zucchini, artichokes, and onions. The escarole soup with over-sized meatballs was good. The pork sandwich had slivers of provolone - also good. Music gently filled the room from the 1960's. The music genres switched reciprocally from Italian to light jazz. An artist sampling include: Jerry Vale, Ray Charles, Bobby Darin, and Bobby Rydell. The service was quite good and accommodating. Spasso Italian Grill in Media opened about two weeks ago. I'm hoping they're here longer than the previous occupants.

It is a nice specious restaurant but to me to do good Italian u need to do something special may be because I am partially Italian. I like their grilled calamari and open kitchen set up.

Ok! Coming along. This visit upgrades Spasso to a place where you actually might try eating! Visited midweek with about 6 people this time, and, got the standard start: we wait five minutes in the foyer while staff mill about a not-close-to-full restaurant doing I don't know what. After being seated, though, everything went right. Our server, a lady with a European accent, was much more attentive and welcoming this time. That helps! She was nice enough to make a reasonable suggestion for someone who had a sense of what she wanted but didn't want to traverse the menu to find it. The waitress assured her they could make what she was describing. The wine list has enough selections that you should be able to find something you like. We got some bread, appetizers, drinks, etc. and were neither being hurried along nor ignored. Another positive, and 180 degrees from prior visits. I think it may be wise to order the specials, as they seem to put some attention and care into those. We all found the entrees to be flavorful and attractively presented. Another positive is we did not experience the "dumped from a jar" feel of some of the accouterments like the last couple of times. So I upgrade Spasso to "worth a try", but be ready for a hit or miss experience. So far, for what it's worth, Wednesday has proved to be our best night there. Sunday looks like a no-fly zone.

My friends and I decided to go to Spasso for the first time last night, during Dining Under the Stars. I called Tuesday to see if Spasso had anything available for our table of 8 around 7:00. The man who took my call pleasantly assured me they had tables available and advised me to make the reservation for 7:00. Although they get busy at that time, they had a couple of reservations at 6 and 6:30 and 7 was best. We got there around 6:50 and were given a pager and told it would be about 20-25 minutes. A half hour passes and I ask for an update on our table. I was told it wasn't going to be too much longer. We decide to grab a drink at the bar. By the time we get back out it's 7:50 (50 minutes past our reservation time). I update them saying we're down to 6 people because the wait was too long. Ten minutes later the hostess asks if our party is here. I assure her we were and have been waiting for an hour. We finally get seated at a table for 4 that now had 6 chairs and 6 menus. By 8:45 (45 minutes after we were seated) we still had no silverware or napkins. Our food didn't arrive until after 9. Our waitress was great, but other than that our service was horrible. The worst part was not once did we get an apology for their poor service until after we asked to speak to a manager when we got our bill. The manager gave a half ass apology claiming she didn't know they'd be busy even though the man who took my reservation told me it gets busy at that time. Reservations are pointless, might as well call it call ahead seating. Horrible experience. I gave two stars because the food was good. Maybe even good enough to justify the higher price, but definitely not worth the wait. I'd be willing to try the brunch but certainly never coming to dinner again.

We came here for lunch and ordered the antipasto plate to start. It was the usual meats, olives, cheeses, pickled veggies, etc. Good and hearty, passable. Since I had already had lunch earlier in the day, (yeah what can you do?) I ordered the lentil soup, which was very hearty, with a tomato based broth. Also good. My friend had a pasta dish with the obligatory parmesan cheese sprinkled on top. The service was very friendly and efficient. This is a nice place but not memorable.

We tried Spasso for the first time a couple weeks ago. This location in Media used to be one of our favorite restaurants many years ago (New Orleans Cafe). It then turned into Brodeurs, which looked awful, and then Spasso. We kind of instantly wanted to hate anyone who moved in after the end of our cajun delight, but reviews finally led us to try Spasso. Life is hectic right now so takeout is our preference these days. Spasso will accommodate takeout, but it's really meant for finer dining, which means takeout prices will not (and do not) apply. Around $30 got us an antipasto dish and ravioli quatro formaggio (photos provided). My husband and I split the two and were satisfied, but could have eaten more. The food was excellent. I could not decide which was more wonderful, the ravioli or its sauce; absolutely some of the best Italian food I have had in a long time! The antipasto too was great. Everything was fresh, high quality, and was definitely a grade above most Delco Italian restaurants (including Trattoria Giuseppe). The ravioli dish included 6 raviolis, about 2" wide, plus bread. While the food was a slice of heaven, I do have to say portions were not very large, and a number of other restaurants in Media, as well as most Italian restaurants in Delco, provide a house salad with an entree in addition to the bread. No free salads at Spasso. (They offered to add lettuce to my antipasto to bulk it up but they were going to charge me $4 for it!!! --- I can get 4 HEADS of iceberg at the grocery store for that! We declined... it would have made a much nicer impression on first-time customers if they had added a handful of iceberg--which would cost them $0.05 at most--to the platter. They knew we were first-time customers too because I explained it when I asked if they did takeout.) The food was so excellent that we actually went back the very next night for takeout dinner again! This time we each got our own entree (I repeated the ravioli quatro formaggio, and my husband got linguini with marinara and meatballs). Here is where I had to take a star off of their rating. There was no dish with meatballs in it except a special from the night before. They weren't offering that dish outside of its special night, but they were willing to add meatballs to a pasta dish at $2 per meatball. He added 3 meatballs which was $6 on top of the already-healthy entree price. It was just a bit steep for meatballs in an Italian restaurant, where they are normally offered with the pasta. (I guess we just shouldn't go there for meatballs.) After all that, my husband wasn't impressed with the dish and wished he'd gotten what I had. So it seems like the dishes can be hit or miss. Luckily we found two good ones and we will return for those. If we have money to gamble, and want to gamble our appetite too, we will try other dishes. But for the good dishes, it is a sure bet, and huge payoff to your tastebuds!

I went here on a date with my girl friend and we decided to eat outside. It was beautiful but cold so I wish they had put the heaters on. Other than that it was very good. My salad was perfect and I would definitely get the chicken parmigiana again. My girlfriend had some sort of seafood medley pasta on special which was excellent. I forget what the dessert was called but it was like a creme puff filled with vanilla ice cream and covered with cocolate. I would reccomend that. I will go back.

I'd like to preface this review by saying that of all the reviews I've given on Yelp, this is my first 1 star review. I am a pretty laid-back reviewer who does not fret about small details. The bad service and bad food my family had here, however, warrants this low rating. Honestly, Bertucci's or Olive Garden offer better Italian food than Spasso, and with better service. I've also heard great things about Trattoria Giuseppe on W Chester Pike. My family made a 5pm reservation for Christmas Eve to eat at Spasso for the first time. When we arrived, they sat us in a nice table in a large room to the side of the entrance. They then came over after a few minutes and told us they put us in the wrong place. Accidents happen, so that was fine. Our new table, however, was in the noisy foyer next to the entrance and the kitchen. It felt like we were sitting in a hallway. We saw many better tables open and were left to wonder why on Earth would they put us at what appeared to be the worst table in the restaurant. The manager then came over to us and began to interrogate us as if we never even had a reservation to begin with. She then emphasized in a condescending manner that the other table was not for us; it was for her friend. She eventually found our reservation on the sheet, but only after insulting us and making us feel unwelcome. Next the waitress came over to tell us about a special appetizer sampler with fried and grilled calamari, prosciutto, caprese, etc. We were a party of six, but we told her we only wanted the sampler for two. She seemed hesitant to do that, so my mom explained that, as 80% of the platter was seafood and meat, most of the group wouldn't be able to eat it, as two were vegetarians and two didn't eat seafood. She then had the nerve to say "Well, you're a party of six, so let's make it for 4?" Rude and inexcusable. What happened next solidified for us that the we would never come back to Spasso. One person ordered chicken parmesan while another ordered veal parmesan. When they brought out our food, we double-checked with the waitress to ensure that each person got the right one, as the person who ordered chicken parmesan does not eat veal and is disgusted by it. Unfortunately, even after we asked, the waitress mixed up the dishes, causing our one party member to feel sick after accidentally eating veal. When we told the waitress about her mix-up, all she said was "Oh, okay. Sorry about that. Does anyone want dessert?" in a completely apathetic tone. Terrible, terrible service. Now, to review the food. The veal parmesan, as other reviewers have said, is dry and flavorless. The chicken parmesan was also average at best, certainly not better than something you could get at Olive Garden for less money. I had the fettuccine pomodoro which was pretty good and only $13, perhaps the only item on the menu we ordered whose price matched its quality. The gnocchi gorgonzola tasted like candy, and not in a good way. The person who ordered it could not eat more than a few bites. My dad had the zuppa di pesce, which he said tasted like they just used a can of tomato paste to make the sauce. The plate cost $24, so there is really no excuse for the sauce to taste that bad. It would've tasted better if they had walked down to Trader Joe's and bought one of the jars of sauce they sell. Very disappointing to say the least. Media has tons of affordable, classy restaurants with great food. Spasso simply isn't worth a visit. The overpriced bad food, combined with the terrible, condescending service we received from the manager and the waitress, is going to keep any of us from ever eating at Spasso again.

Been here a couple times since they opened. The food is always good - no one has ever complained about an entree or appetizer and we've tried everything from the pasta to the veal ravioli special (so good!) to the seafood. The staff is always pleasant and helpful. Our waitress made recommendations that turned out to be great choices! I was a little disappointed that my creme brulee didnt have a crispy sugar layer - it was still a little gummy and didn't have that definitive "crack" that a creme brulee should have. But that was our only "complaint" about the food. And the prices are pretty decent. My rating comes from one thing - the atmosphere and building. The first time we were there, we had a party of six and sat upstairs. It was so loud that I could only hear the person sitting to either side of me. Everything echos in the large dining rooms and makes it hard to hold a conversation. It is so loud. The second time we were there we got seated in the basement - in a room that looks like it used to be a walk-in freezer or storage room and was converted to a dining area. There was a table of 8 on one side of our little room (as well as another table of two) who clearly thought they were the only ones in the restaurant and talking and laughing at the top of their lungs. It was very hard to hold any type of conversation. And there was a constant banging noise (which, from my restaurant waitstaff experience, was the slamming of a walk-in box) coming from the wall to our right which was very distracting. Would go back for the food - but probably would not linger for the atmosphere.

My partner and I were out of towners for a wedding, which took place at Spasso's. It was such a good spot for a wedding dinner. The space was open, staff accommodating to our needs, we enjoyed the food and our glasses never ran empty. You could've rolled us out of there after our 5-course meal!

Food in the restaurant is good, however don't plan a big party there because they give you leftover cheap disgusting food with inadequate staff too boot. The price was way too expensive for the 4 course dinner that was inadequate to eat. I was extremely disappointed and will never go back

First time and was very impressed! - Staff was excellent as was our waiter - Food was great ... key highlights: - Antapasto plate for a group (we had 6) which included calamari, etc was the best I ever had. The meats and cheeses were really tasty, but it was the seafood that put it over the top - Everyone loved their entree's, whether they were pasta, fish (my buddy had salmon)or veal. - For the meal that we had it was a bargin (about $110 couple with drinks/wine)

Terrible, terrible, terrible!!! Last night, a friend and I went to Spasso for dinner because normally we really enjoy it. The service is usually okay and the food is usually pretty good (never exceptional). Last night, however, was a disaster. We each ordered a glass of wine, fine. We ordered the arancini, which where okay, but how do you really mess up fried rice balls? We both ordered the special for the evening, which was a stuffed pork tenderloin wrapped in prosciutto. It was served with a greasy, overcooked wedge of potato cake, and some overcooked, under-seasoned grilled vegetables. The problem was that my friend's portion was served with a long black hair. I'll repeat, my friends entree came from the kitchen with a long black hair in it. DISGUSTING. When we told the server, he looked like he might cry. He meekly apologized and left with the inedible plate of food. Later, about 10 minutes (I guess she was too busy), the manager came over and apologized about the disgusting food that had been served to us. She made several excuses for the mess up by saying that the kitchen staff are all men with short hair. I asked her if that was supposed to make it better?--that the hair came from someone that didn't work in the kitchen? She wanted to offer him a new entree, but naturally after finding a hair on the entree he ordered, his appetite was gone. She mentioned that she would take the entree off the bill. Oh, good, you'll take off something that was served with hair in it that I couldn't have possibly eaten any way. I hardly see this as reconciling the issue. She should have offered to comp the meal, or at the very least offered something for free. Taking something off that was inedible was literally doing nothing. I ate some of my plate, but because I was the only one eating, I also got no enjoyment from being at Spasso. The pork was good, but wrapping it in prosciutto that was cut too think and then stuffing it with cheese was just like eating salt on salt on salt. The potato cake was burnt on the bottom and the vegetables were overcooked and under-seasoned and they had too much of smoke flavor. There was no acid or brightness in the dish to help balance the fat and salt. I'm sorry to say that although we used to like Spasso, we won't be returning. After serving hair in your food and not offering to fully reconcile the issue, you don't get a second chance. There are plenty of other places in Media to eat that aren't as over priced and go out of their way to provide great service.

I've been here several times and it's always been fantastic. Last time we went, I was so excited. Maybe the normal chef was on vacation, but the food was just okay this time. I ordered the same things I usually do, but the portion sizes were smaller, and they didn't taste nearly as good. My companion didn't really like anything he got. I never caught our waitress' name, as she didn't introduce herself, but she seemed pretty inattentive. She came back ten minutes after serving our food to check on us. When we said it was "okay" instead of "great" or even "good", she walked away. Also, we were seated basically on top of another table when the dining room was empty. We left feeling very disappointed.

This was my first time at Spasso and wow - I'm impressed. We sat in the bar because the main dining room was extremely cold... yes it was hot out and therefore the AC was cranked, but it was too cold to have been able to enjoy the meal. The bar was a bit better in terms of temperature. However all locations - inside and out - were loud. It would be hard to have a very intimate dinner here... and this was on a Wednesday evening. We initially ordered a couple glasses of wine which were both chilled nicely and very lovely. While waiting for our meals a nice eggplant tapenade was served along with bread - complimentary. Quite good. I went out on a limb and ordered the gnocchi in gorgonzola cream sauce. Coming from an Italian family and having homemade gnocchi - I often don't order out as I'm most often disappointed. However, when I was told by the server that all pastas are made in house I thought I'd give it a try (they do have whole wheat pasta as well but that is not made in house). It was a good decision - the gnocchi melted in my mouth, literally. So light and fluffy - exactly as it should be. The cream sauce was incredibly rich and flavorfull. My friend ordered the mushroom filled ravioli and they were excellent as well. We actually split our dishes and shared! For vegetarians, both these dishes are idea. There aren't many other true vegetarian options on the menu, but our server did indicate that they could make nearly any of the pasta dishes as vegetarian. Overall this was a great find and I'll definitely be back!

With all of the open tables upstairs they still chose to put us in the basement.

enjoyed a terrific dinner "al fresco" last night for my birthday with the family. had a terrific evening and wonderful food. this is the 4th time my wife and i have been there and each time the food has been either very good or frankly great. had the Veal last night for the 1st time and it was tender and flavorful. the belvedere martini alongside it was even better. 2 issues to point out. lower the volume on the "sam and anna" show outside because it was annoying big time. secondly, either upgrade the mussels to the"prince edward" variety served at Ariana or drop them from the menu. that's it. what a great addition to the media dining scene

Hands down best Italian restaurant I've ever been to. The service was incredible. Paul was our waiter and went above and beyond for our party of 13.

My wife was raving about their Caesar Salad, i tried i and it is good. My sister got their mussel and white wine sauce. It would've been great besides the fact that it was gritty. Every bite has a sand texture. We when during Dining Under the Stars so it was packed.

This is a great place for drinks and an appetizer. The antipasto is always a hit with our groups. The menu options are less than exciting but the food is good.

This place was outstanding. Service was spot on. Kid friendly. Excellent food. Veal and crab entree was awesome. Linguini Putanesca was off the chain. Loved the escarole and beans side dish. Atmosphere is perfect. Will be back next month.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
