We had the best Chinese Dinner here last night. I took my boyfriend for his birthday and we had a very nice time. The place is small, the ambiance is perfect (I love the fish tank dividing the restaurant.), and the service was top notch. We ordered from the specials list, and everything tasted great. Best Chinese food around! My boyfriend asked me where I found such a great chinese place! (Which means I got some points) We will definitely return again!

Oh Abacus...why do I eat your food, yet despise you so, so much? Abacus, a self-proclaimed "traditional style" Chinese restaurant located in the declining North Penn Shopping Center in Lansdale, apparently is not one to be trifled with. They tout the fact that their food is prepared the way it is "actually" prepared in China, and that there is no other ethnic Chinese restaurant in the area that can match their quality while making this same claim..................preposterous! Now, as you may have noticed, I am a Yelp regular at this location, simply because of where I work. There are not many choices as for lunch around here, unless you are a big fan of fast-food, which I attempt to avoid at all costs. This is the only Chinese restaurant a couple miles, so it seems that if I want something other than burgers or pizza, this is what I am relegated to. They do make a fantastic egg drop soup, and I make sure to get this whenever I order from there, as it is just so good. Most of the dishes you can order are extremely similar, consisting of the same vegetables in every single menu item. The food is also extremely bland. Now, I've had traditional Chinese food, and I can tell you that I never experienced anything being even near bland. For sauces that taste mostly like oil, with no distinct flavors, this place is also overpriced for lunch and dinnertime meals, despite their "authentic" claim. Many of their pre-made foods, such as eggrolls, often taste stale or freezer burnt. It blows my mind that this is a "Zagat rated" restaurant. Although, "rated" doesn't mean rated well. I'll have to actually look into their thoughts on this place. Another interesting note is the service. I have never sat down at a table here, but have picked up food on several occasions. Now I know people have their good days and their bad days, but when you're dealing with customers who are there to spend money at your establishment, you should at least be mood-consistent. Sometimes they are very nice, talkative, and smiling (probably on those rare good days), but the majority of the time they are not just quiet, expecting you to know what to do when you walk in, but extremely, extremely rude, both in person and on the phone. Bottom line is: Don't go here unless its absolutely necessary. I have really no other choices as I cannot leave during lunch to drive to get more desirable food, which is why 99% of the time I pack my own lunch. If you enjoy being treated like an animal, or the mud on someones shoe, while in the process of eating tasteless, overpriced "AMERICANIZED" Chinese food, then this is the Holy Grail of places for you! Oh and I say Americanized, because despite their claims, there is nothing authentic about this place. Do yourself a favor and stay away from this one. Zai jian!

I love this place! Tho it may be a little pricey, the food is super good and the atmosphere makes the experience even better. I have been going here ever since I was little, usually a birthday favorite. The people are very friendly and are always smiling! Its unfortunate the location is in the corner of a strip mall but the appearance from the outside underplays the atmosphere so please don't let this scare you off. I would have to say my favorite part is the homemade fortune cookies dipped in chocolate....mmm soo yummy! If you have the chance, go visit and enjoy!

Delicious Chinese food! Back to the original owner. Try the papaya shrimp, stone crab dumplings and steamed fresh fish! BYOB

Excellent Chinese food. Not your average and less expensive restaurant. Everything was fresh cooked to order. Even the fortune cookie was dipped in chocolate. The only thing better than the food was the wait staff. They have been in business for 31 years by doing all the right things.

The place is dated, but the food is great.

Decent take out chinese food. Exactly what you'd expect, but not terribly memorable. Very friendly and efficient with the order.

Great little place to get Chinese. I have been a regular here for 20+ years. It is one of my go to restaurants for great food and extremely consistent service. I have never had a bad meal, and Joe the owner makes the experience. Also, you need to do their Chinese New Year celebration, at least once if not every year, great price for what you get and they theme it to the year it is. I am never afraid to bring my friends here, and I always know what to expect.

Just got take-out from here and was quite pleased. Chicken with broccoli was fresh, tasty and not as oily as other Chinese places in the area. The egg roll was one of the best I have ever had. This is my new go to Chinese! Very happy with Abacus!

We came here expecting great food, but we were very disappointed. My dishes were barely warm and the chicken was undercooked. There is a male waiter, of asian descent, who is extremely rude. I'll grant that the place is relatively clean, which is why I gave 2 stars instead of 1. I think they stay in business because they're so close to the big Merck complex.

So delicious. So nice. Very accommodating. Funny host/owner. Will be back many more times. Give you tea & crispy noodles right as seated.

Solid, no frills, Chinese lunch spot in the Lansdale area. Nothing over the top about this place but you walk out feeling full for about $10. Most of the entrees come with wonton soup which is excellent and the fried wontons on the table are like crack. I've tried most of the entrees and nothing has blown me away, although I've been enjoying the Singapore noodles recently. Service is excellent (you'll never have an empty water glass) and the food arrives fairly quickly. A-ok in my book.

Went there for lunch - And my review is in reflection to the price they charge (area average) : Pros - Decor, Presentation. (As per area average). Tea Cons - (Where do I start) The chips/sauce served when I was seated - they were obviously over cooked/burnt - not extra crispy - burnt. my server was either distracted or we had communication problems that couldn't be solved by me pointing at the menu (I want this one, the way it is.) Further unnecessary clarifications were needed. (and Keeps going downhill from there) My original Order was The abacus chicken, with the Hot and sour soup. with the vegetable spring roll ( Just veggies and no meat was stressed). - after some clarifications as requested by the server - I requested him to repeat my order. Everything was A-OK What was served - first the wonton Soup - horrible - Salted/oiled Chicken broth water with a tiny bit of meat in a massive wrap (x2). With 3-4 thin strips or still cooking pork at the bottom. Next came in the really tiny -3 bite- $1.5 ?Shrimp Roll? .. why? do they consider shrimp vegetarian? or did my server forget to mention that. regardless - pathetically done. Lastly, the Abacus Chicken, - I usually assume if it's a special, it's got to be a crowd favorite, or at least good. This however was not. Are you shitting me, this was a sodium overdose! I was literally cleaning all the pieces of chicken/veggies of before consuming them. and it was still SALTY! the burnt chips at this point were a god-send! - also the tiny bowl of rice (please, that cup was a size too big for the 5 spoons of rice!) The entree even if you look past the saltiness - was just black bean sauce. And they have that on their menu as well! (repeat item.. really?) Seriously, "authentic" chinese food? ...

took two trips just to be fair and equitable. Both times I thought the food was horribly over-soy sauced. There was no flavor left in the food. One guest in my party last evening had house fried noodles. The pork slices actually tasted like the refrigerator they were hard and dried out. We also ordered the pupu platter and what came out was not what was described although my guests did like the beef on a stick; the pork ribs were dry and tasteless, not eaten, I liked the variety of shrimp items on the platter but I'm the only one to eat shrimp. I ordered ginger beef, there was no flavor or ginger in the beef but there were three huge slices of ginger on the other side of the plate. Again too much soy. First time I was there it was for takeout the fried dumplings were standard no complaint; the cashew chicken over soy'ed; the lomein over soy'ed. Eventually someone in the house at it for late night snacking didn't ask who. Now for goodness: awesome people; awesome staff; awesome service; nice atmosphere; beautiful stunning pieces in the decor. Hopefully they go back to the way they used to do things because everyone always said it was awesome food and I cannot picture Zagat raving about this.

I know some people who swear by this place.... I, on the otherhand, am just ok with it. For what you get, I think the price is kind of expensive. The food is a bit on the salty side. The location is in a strip mall. I think you may like this depending on whether or not you have a palate that leans towards the salty or sweet side. Myself--- I like sweet.

I've ordered and gone in and eaten here in multiple occasions when visiting and have never really been disappointed. There is little to no competition in the area so I can see why its always busy. Having said all this the food is just average. I've had a little of everything and nothing stands out so I can't give you a particular dish that I think you should order.

Andrew Zimmern's always says on Bizarre Foods, "If it looks good...eat it!" We followed this motto at Abacus and were fairly disappointed. We were told by a recommendation "Abacus serve as authentic Chinese food". This person has spent time in China, so I still believe he knew what he was talking about. Guess I'll just stick to the more Americanized Chinese food we all are familiar with. Being overpriced did not help the cause.

We really enjoyed the food but it was on the expensive side for what we got. Service was ok, but a little slow. Overall, it was OK.

The family seems so nice and service here is great but the food has gone from bad to worse. In the past I would have said that it was typical Americanize Chinese food with some lousy dishes but some tasty ones too. However it has gotten progressively worse over our past few visits and most recently they sold me fish (take out) that had gone bad. I will not return.

Good chinese food that is a bit overpriced. There is usually a long wait at lunch time. Service is excellent though.

Upscale Chinese food that looks better than it tastes. Its amazing shrimp isn't that amazing nor is its cashew chicken. However, it's a popular place for those who prefer Americanized Chinese food.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
