I have been coming to La Cocina since 2001, when Sal first opened and a student of KU. Being half Mexican, I am very picky about my Mexican food. This place is amazing!!! The prices are about the same as most Mexican restaurants but here, you get quality! I have since moved away from the area but when I come back, I always try to stop and eat here. Try it, You will not be disappointed!!

Good food and friendly staff. This is not your typical cookie cutter Mexican restaurant. La Cocina serves a menu full of made-from-scratch goodness. My recommendations are the tamales, mole poblano, or la compuesta.

Poblano Azteca is great but a little spicy FYI. Sometimes the staff can be slow for drink refills

This place is authentic and cheap. The lunch special is a dinner portion just cheaper. The waiter was very friendly and quick. I highly recommend.

Our favorite mexican restaurant to frequent when the urge for Mexican food hits. Great choices and excellent staff. Sal and the staff are friendly and quick. Favorite for me is the Dos Burritos Supremo with extra guacamole and sour cream. Choice between red sauce and green and good chips and salsa before the meal. Happy belly filler upper!! Dessert is always the Mexican fried ice cream. Having recently returned from Veracruz in October, this place really evokes memories of all the family run establishments we ate in while there. MAGNIFICO!!

Probably the best place to eat in Kutztown! If you like Mexican food... and I mean real authentic mexican food then La Cocina Mexicana is probably the closest thing you'll get too. The staff is VERY friendly and the decor and atmosphere of the restaurant is beautiful. Not only is the food amazing but you also cannot beat the price. If you like mexican food, then look no further, LA Cocina Mexicana is your place!

I eat here when I work in Kutztown. They have the most fabulous mexican food. Chips are warm and fresh. Guacamoli is the best I've eaten. I had the Combination #5 today. The chicken was moist, the enchalada, and taco were very good. After reading the one star reviews, I'm thinking, these folks are not very experienced with Mexican food. The service is friendly. The reason I did not give it 5 stars is the atmosphere. This place could use remodeling, but if you are here for the food, it really doesn't matter. Don't forget to try the fried ice cream. It's out of this world.

My favoritest Mexican restaurant. We live in Allentown and regularly drive out to Kutztown just to eat here. I concur that the owner Sal is very friendly and loves to talk. I'm vegetarian and he'll make a special veggie meal not on the menu if I ask. The chile rellenos are to die for. I'm a big fan of the sopes. YUM FYI - BYOB

Good, if you're craving a bit of Mexican or a Mexican (hot waiter). The chips and salsa are never good. Overall, as the only place in town, it has great atmosphere. I think they have gotten cheap on their ingredients (campbells tomato paste as "red sauce"). The best thing going for them is that president bushes daughter got her Mexican fix there a few years ago.

I had heard good things about this place, so my boss took me there on the way back from a client meeting. My boss raved, but I was not impressed. The food was only okay in my opinion. The only game in town though.

It was "ok". The guacomole was really good, but I wasn't too impressed with anything else and we had to track down a waitress to take our order. Better than a "taco bell" but not somewhere I'd go again (except for the guacomole maybe) =D

Every time I've gone here the service has been amazing, short wait times, food ALWAYS is prepared the way I order it. The chips & salsa the give you when you sit down is always perfect. The shredded chicken is a little bland but tastes delicious with red or green sauce on your item. The Carne asada is delicious as well as the enchiladas! Highly recommend this place for lunch or dinner!

Nice place with super friendly staff. The chorizo quesadillo could use a little more cheese but was very flavorful. The bistek mexicana is not quite enough for two to split, but was good too. The decor is a bit on the bizarre side, lots of skeletons and bizarre paintings. Worth a stop for that alone.

Love this little Mexican gem in Kutztown! The food is always delicious and the best I've found in the Lehigh Valley so far. I love the burritos and chimichangas. The Dos Enchiladas Suizas is yummy with a bit of heat. My lips were tingling after that one! Their salsa is very unique...it's a spicy green salsa (more of a sauce) served with a slaw-like dish and tortilla chips. The slaw helps cool the heat of the green salsa. Love that it's a BYOB. We always grab a chilled Riesling from Blue Mountain Vineyards in New Tripoli on our way to the restaurant. Service is great, too!

First off, I really like the atmosphere of this place. It really makes you feel like you are in Mexico. I love the fact the the salsa is made with cabbage, and the green sauce they give you has just the right amount of heat. The quacamole was the best that we have had in a long time. Really flavorful! We had beef chimichangas and they were excellent. Very authentic flavors! Come here often!

I think the food here is consistently pretty good. After eating here at least a dozen times I've never been severely disappointed. The service can be a little spotty sometimes, but it's a small place and they usually only have one waiter/waitress and if the place is really busy this can be a little bit of a problem. It should be mentioned that the Mexican food here is a little unique which I really like (but others may find it to adventurous). The salsa is made with cabbage instead of just tomatoes and the green sauce is spicy and the red sauce mild. The fajitas and enchiladas are very good. I think it's a great place to grab some very good Mexican food in Kutztown. Just don't be in a rush when you visit.

If I could give it LESS than one star I would. The people giving this place three, four, even five stars...have obviously never eaten very good food...ever. Sorry :( My roommate and I went here because we used to live very close to this place. The people there are nice enough, but not very attentive. The food is all bland! Seriously bland. What kind of Mexican restaurant food has no flavor? The guacamole had no taste. No spices or anything. And i know avocados don't have much flavor but I've had better dip from a packet. We both got the chicken fajitas...the chicken was bland, like they had boiled it, and that was it. there were almost no vegetables. It was soggy, and just...I cannot get over the fact there was NOTHING but boiled chicken with no taste! Like I was chewing...and I could tell there was texture of something, but no taste to it. Sorry to those who give this place high ratings. Maybe it was an off day for us? But i will never go back to find out. Absolutely terrible.

Authentic Mexican food in Kitztown.. Would be a five star if they served liquor..Imo Margaritas are a neccesity for great Mexican food. If the avocados are ripe, the guacamole can be awesome. The ambiance of the restaurant is adorned with hand carved and painted chairs as well as other Mexican decorations. The staff is always friendly, and was patient with me when I attempted to use my high school Spanish.

Gotta agree with Ashley and give it less than a 1 star....the food was terrible along with the service. The waitress never checked on how are food was....the quesadilla chicken tasted like teriyaki and the chicken in the chimichanga was dry and tasted almost like turkey. Worst Mexican experience ever!!!

La Cocina Mexicana is a solid place to grab a bite. We went here recently for lunch on a quiet Sunday afternoon and had no problems getting seated. It's actually more spacious inside than it looks from the outside. What's up with all the Frida Kahlo artwork? She's plastered all over this place. Nothing gets you in the Mexican mood more than having Frida's eyes watch over you as you eat. The food is standard Mexican fare. The nachos with beef were a rather small serving but very tasty. They won't please everyone as the nachos were almost soggy from all the toppings. Fortunately for me, I like them this way. My companion's beef tacos were all right but my burrito was surprisingly massive. The beef was delicious but the pork lacked a lot of flavor. Service is efficient and prices are fair. My only pet peeve is that they charge you for refills on fountain drinks. Boo.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
