This is our new favorite Mexican restaurant!!!! So authentic! The servers were the sweetest, friendliest girls! (Ask for Mary) Delicious complementary margaritas were a welcomed surprise! Excellent!!! Homemade guacamole with large chunks of avocado absolutely scrumptious! Sizzling chicken fajitas seasoned to perfection! The burrito was huge and stuffed with lots of rice beans and delicious homemade sauce!! Everything they serve here is fresh and delicious and made to order! I wish I could give this more than five stars! Can't wait for dessert!

La Morena has the best Mexican tacos in the area. Every time I go I order the pork roasted tacos and the steak tacos. The Mexican sandwich with pork was pretty bland, and the burrito was small for the price. The tacos are their main selling point because they are mostly just the meat with a bit of onions and lots of cilantro. Another small complaint I have is that when the servers ask if you want chips and salsa I thought it meant that they were complimentary but they weren't. Plain chips and a bit of salsa have always been a free side in any other authentic Mexican restaurant I've been to. The restaurant isn't much to look at from the outside but once you go in, you're engulfed by Mexican chachkis and whatever soccer game is playing at the moment. It has a really familiar feel and the decor is really fun to look at. The only problem is that in the summer months the small AC unit they have doesn't keep the place cool even in such a small area.

REAL tacos! Delicious, fresh, and authentic food! Decent selection of options, corn tortillas are best with everything! Wish they had more room inside, or could expand outside. Definitely want to order ahead of time and pick up, instead of waiting inside.

Really great authentic Mexican food-tortillas are AMAZING, everything is priced well and the margaritas are great! (And plentiful! You can get refills!) Chips are not complimentary, which is kind of annoying, and came automatically with beans and cheese, which my kids wouldn't eat. Kids meals and drinks are lacking. Overall awesome experience-will definitely be back!

I came here on a Sunday and ordered some tacos to go. The waitress handed me a menu and came back after a few minutes to take my order. She estimated the wait would be around ten minutes but my order came much faster than that (yay!). The restaurant is small, colorful, and had enough room for about ~10 tables. The only other customers inside was a group of 6-8 people and they occupied a corner of the place. Let's get to the point of my review, the tacos. I ordered two al pastor tacos, one chicken, and one fish taco. Let me preface this by saying that I am in love with AL PASTOR tacos and the ones here are decent. The chicken and fish were alright in flavor. The green(mild) and orange(hot) sauces are a good addition to ramp up flavors on the tacos. On another note, the tacos were really greasy and the limes that came with my tacos were dry and beginning to brown on the sides. Overall, the service was good and the food was okay.

Love this place. It's one of our go to spots for Mexican food! We've been to other places but it seems as though we always compare the food to this spot and so far no one compares to them! Food is delicious!

Not quite 4 stars, but hey hot salsa that's not caliente de gringo is worth most of a star bump after all the mild salsa that other places try to pass off as hot. After we were served several waitresses came by to ask how we liked the food. I said 'This is not American style, this is not Tex Mex, this is real". That says it all. Becca yelp.com/biz/la-morena-t… who sounds like she knows Mexican food much better then I wasn't impressed, however compared to Taco bell and their ilk, or some local places that I can't recall the names of La Morena is quite good. Quite frankly, the best Mexican food I have eaten is from La Peña Mexicana yelp.com/biz/la-peña-mex… , however La Morena is very good, and much closer then Kennett Square. I had Huevos con Jamon which had a nice portion of beans, and some rice, as well as 3 or 4 warm tortillas served in a small container to keep them warm and soft. I managed to figure out that ya put it all in the tortilla just like Moo Shu - kinda ironic that I've been eating Moo Shu since the 1970's and 2014 is the first time I've been to a restaurant from a country less then 2000 miles away and eaten in this common style. Well the world continues to shrink. The eggs were kinda dry, but this was my first try with Huevos con Jamon so that might be the way they should be... The fine actually spicy hot sauce was a welcome addition, and to continue the Chinese v Mexican comparison I think of a more complex and interesting character then, say, hot chili oil. My wife enjoyed a plate of nachos with chicken, however she found the style unusual and the taste was fine but not outstanding. We had a side of guacamole which was good with a nice lime counterpoint adding a nice sour acid component to the flavor profile (see, Becca, I learned a new expression from you!). We ordered a bowl of bean soup, but they ran out and brought us tortilla soup which was a very generous portion, however it was kinda greasy and we did not care for it. We sent it back and with no issues it was removed with no charge. They also ran out of flan, so we shared a generous slice of tres leches cake. It was fine, but nothing outstanding with factory canned whipped cream. I think La Morena Taqueria is quite good. It's a different style of Mexican food then, for example the fine Tex Mex at Rey Azteca yelp.com/biz/rey-azteca-… which is also good. They have real food they make themselves - we were there late on a Saturday and running out means that there isn't a package of 1 gross of enchiladas in the walk in. They care and they do a nice job. We will be back! Free margaritas, Mexican soccer on 2 big TV's, and BYOB!

This is a wonderful little place in Hatboro! The Carnitas tacos blew me away on my first visit. I've been here a few times for lunch. The food is fresh and authentic. It's a small charming atmosphere and the staff is super friendly. Very inexpensive and delish!

I've eaten Mexican food for my entire life and by far this is in the top 5% of authentic Mexican food. Everything is fresh and prepared to order. The service is great as is the location. You want real Mexican food this is your place!!!!

Such a cute, quaint, Mexican restaurant with amazing authentic food and a friendly staff! Loved the chips and salsa and pick de gallo. My dad and I ordered the chicken chimichanga and it was delicious. My husband ordered 4 tacos and they were not only outstanding but super fresh. They also came out and gave us free margaritas! We cannot wait to go back to this hidden gem.

Its a gem in Hatboro on a side street. Staff is very friendly, atmosphere is festive and food is awesome. A must visit if you love authentic Mexican food. Don't forget to order free Margaritas.

I stopped in for lunch since I was in the area. Its been a few years since I've eaten here since I havent been in the area. I was hoping that they were as good as I remembered and sure enough they were. I had the steak tacos and had flashbacks of the first time I tried them. They were excellent. The dining room was very small and intamate but full of wonderfull smells. Great authentic mexican restaurant!

This place is adorable on the inside with cute colorful patterned tables and colorful paper cutout hanging from the ceiling. The waitress was attentive, and polite. She had a little bit of a difficult time explaining the stuffed peppers to my mother. However, she did get her message across. The provide chips and salsa to begin with. I recommend if you don't like spicy don't touch the red one. It's wicked spicy. The chips were a little thicker than I am used to, but they had a perfect crunch. I was disappointed they didn't provide a refill. The vegetarian fajitas had a good selection of perfectly cooked vegetables and I polished off the whole plate! My mother enjoyed her stuffed pepper. The poblano pepper isn't too spicy for those concerned about it. Additionally, they will put a meat of your choice inside it and its good chunks of meat not unrecognizable shreds of meat. Decent price for a pretty good quality of fairly authentic Mexican food.

Still amazing. Almost a year after finding this place and it remains a favorite of mine and my boyfriend. We both love the chorizo chimichanga, and he is a big fan of the huevos rancheros, while I also like the tostadas. Even when it's packed the service is always really fast and the people who work here are super nice. I honestly can't figure out why anyone goes to big name chain Mexican restaurants and pays more for lower quality food, but if that means La Morena remains there for all of us in the know, I'm fine with that.

I would like to give this great restaurant a one start rating that way no one would want to come and this little treasure would not be discovered! But I won't do that! Fantastic! Taco chips and salsa are extra but worth it and very different then what you would usually get. I had the garlic shrimp and floured tortillas. Super meal! Highly recommended! My wife had the Shrimp Fajitas...amazing, very fresh! The Waitress was friendly, efficient, accommodating and very nice! Oh.... and free margaritas too!

Really shocked and unflattered at the service from this joint. Drive by here all the time and it always looked packed, so I made a mental note that the next time I wanted some Mex, we'd come here. It has to be good right? I mean they are always packed. Wrong. I'm 90 percent sure it looks this way is because there's only, maybe, four tables to actually sit. Top that with no air conditioning in early August. Complete misery. The food was edible but not memorable. The rice was soggy and flavorless, actually that kind of sums up all the food. Service took FOREVER. 90 minutes and $40 dollars later for two freaking chimichangas. Ain't nobody got time fo that?! I'm not sure where the miss is here. Lastly, it was legit dirty. I'm okay with musty little corner joints that have some character to them, but these greasy walls have never even seen a half-ass, damped cloth. Lesson learned.

i don't like the taco house. We were too uncomfortable, waitress never came back and when i order one dish she didn't give me a fork and knife. also, the food wasn't good. Terrible experience EVER!! we are NOT going back to there. you know what? we put only $1 for tip. it was my gift.

Wow! Adorable and authentic! Nothing fancy about the place but the food is out of this world. Hands down the best tortilla soup that I have ever had, and I've had a lot. Diamond in the rough! Did I mention free margaritas:-) Food was so fresh that the plates came out one by one!

Had dinner there last night with the family and... while the staff was attentive and the service quick, the food left a lot to be desited. The meats in the tacos, the fajitas and the nachos were overly salted, The eggs in the Huevos Mexicana were over cooked. All in all we've had better. The refried beans were OK, the salsa could have been a bit spicier (even a bit of lime would have helped) The food alone would be 1 star, the service and price upgrades the review to 2 stars. A lot of other people have given this place stellar reviews, which is why we tried it; so either we got there on a bad night or collectively the 6 of us have very different taste buds -- and we all have had and understand stellar authentic Mexican food.

Some of the most authentic Mexican food I've seen and it was delicious. You get chips and salsa Verde and FREE MARGARITAS while waiting for your food, I got the churisso tacos and the flavors were impressive, it was like wow, I can't wait to go back and try something new. Just watch out for the hot sauce because it is really hot but good.

Just had the BEST dinner experience at La Morena with my husband and 1-year-old. Not only was the food delicious (I got the pork gorditas) but the service was excellent - everyone was so sweet. All in all a 5-star experience and we're definitely going back!

This is the only Mexican restaurant in the suburbs that qualifies as authentic and consistently good. My family and I go here monthly. The service is friendly and attentive and food is very fast. My favorite part of the experience is always the free marguerites.

Great place for authentic Mexican food. Staff is nice, it's very small and quaint so get there early but the food is worth the wait. Oh and did I mention the margaritas are free!

For the price I absolutely love this place. I tend to get the chorizo sopes. So greasy and delicious. You can't go wrong with the chorizo really. The hostess/waitress (not sure, I always do take out) is very friendly. I've had the tres leches cake for dessert which was perfect (everywhere I go they're about the same) and from what I remember it was a pretty big chunk. I would split it with someone next time (especially bc of the price). I've never been to Mexico but I have had authentic Mexican food before and what I've gotten at La Morena seems pretty authentic and, more importantly, delicious.

Mexican food (especially "authentic Mexican food") is my favorite. I've been to Mexico a few times and I make my own Rick Bayless-style moles and entrees at home at least once a week for various Mexican meals for my family. I know the good stuff and I know the average stuff and I know the "meh" stuff when it comes to Mexican cuisine. We went here once to try this place out one day and we found it lacking in many areas: atmosphere, cleanliness, service, flavor, texture, flavor...flavor. My husband got the burrito (which I tried a bite of) and, honestly, I can't remember what I had because it was so underwhelming and forgettable. I think it was along the lines of a generic enchilada. There was nothing flavorful or special about the food or service. Most of the food looked as if it were, as Gordon Ramsay would say, "the contents of a diaper." The seasoning was generic Americanized flavoring...dull and out-of-a-can looking refried beans and guacamole. The sauce was dull and bland. The textures were, again, average and underwhelming. I prefer fresher ingredients and more of a flavor profile. I also like my food to look appealing and edible. I view Mexican food as a type of soul food, but this place ain't got no soul. So...we'll be skipping this place from now on in and not recommending it to anyone. Sorry, fans of La Morena.

If you say 'Mexican Food' chances are I'll come running. If you say La Morena, it'll be double-time. Their Mexican food is the real deal. Fried pork skin in green sauce? Beef tongue tacos? All along side your other favorites like fajitas and burritos. We had the vegetarian nachos and a veggie burrito that were loaded with roasted veggies, beans, and rice. Also: FREE MARGARITAS. My only compliant is that they were severely understaffed. There was 1 waitress for 10 packed tables, 1 cook, and 1 person doing dishes and running the cash register. We weren't in a rush, so the semi-slow service wasn't an issue. It was nice to sit and enjoy our nachos before we even ordered our entrees. Oh, and did I mention FREE MARGARITAS?!?!

I've been eating at this Mexican restaurant for about 2 1/2 years now. From the beginning it's always been a little on the unkempt side, which I accepted. I have enjoyed many meals there but something is different now. The good margaritas and acceptable food at an acceptable price kept me coming back. Service was always slowwww but courteous. The place is extremely small which I don't mind. However during the hot summer months the air conditioner is not strong enough to cool the room and you wind up sweating. The floor was disgustingly dirty the other day when I went there with trash all over it and dirt caked into the floor. There was also a hose from the air conditioner running into a bucket that was right behind my chair. Margaritas were disgusting and completely watered down. Glasses were dirty too. I've gotten many many chimichangas from this place and they ruined it with so much sour cream that the chimichanga was no longer crunchy but soggy. This place needs a major overhaul. Looks like I'll be searching for a new Mexican restaurant to eat from.

Me and my husband went to eat dinner here because of all the good yelp reviews. The service was friendly and the free margaritas were delicious...but I don't understand all the hype about the food. I ordered fried chicken tacos and my husband ordered 5 different tacos---the meat was very dry (didn't taste fresh). this place is cute and seems authentic, but not very fresh in my opinion.

  • Maddie S.

Love this place. The waitress is always very friendly. The food is awesome and cheap. I especially recommend the Al Pastor tacos (pork with pineapple). Help yourself to drinks from the fridge. Very fast service unless the tiny dining room is packed, but still pretty quick. Place is a little divy and can be a little cramped, so don't bring your uptight friends.

Amazing, authentic Mexican food. This place is a little diamond in the rough on a corner street in the heart of Hatboro. Small and cozy. BYOB/Free margaritas. Fresh/warm chips with refried beans, guac and salsa. I highly recommend dining in for the full experience; take-out is still good but not the same. The fried banana dessert is heavenly. I get the chicken enchiladas every time. My boyfriend loves the shrimp fajitas. Very inexpensive as well! Waitstaff is super friendly and sweet.

The best authentic Mexican I've had in the Philadelphia area. The ingredients were fresh and portions were large. The first thing to arrive on the table were complimentary margaritas and fried chips topped off with refried beans. Ãœber tasty!!! I ordered enchiladas with the green sauce. Our table ordered fish tacos, beef chimichangas, lots of guacamole, and shrimp fajitas. Everyone was stuffed and so happy at the end of the meal. The service was excellent despite the language barrier. But hey! Whattya expect?! If you want authentic you gotta be more open minded. Duuuuh!! I live down in the city but I will definitely be back to this gem in hatboro. For sure!!!! Also, the guacamole was mixed with pico de gallo. I was a little confused when it came out because it didn't look like the standard guacamole I get elsewhere but delicious nonetheless. And seriously, free margaritas? How could this not be a five star?!?!

  • Jamison F.

Great lunch! Had the beef flank chimichanga and a beef tongue taco. Both were delicious. Hot sauce had great heat and the chips were very nice. I'll be back! Oh, and they take credit cards now. I saw several reviews that said cash only, so I tapped Mac before coming, but didn't need it.

Did I miss something? Sure, La Morena provides a 5-star experience relative to, say, nearby Rey Azteca. But judged against other authentic Mexican spots (as it should be) La Morena earns 3 stars. The highlight of the meal actually came with the chips and salsa. La Morena fries their tortillas thicker than most, adding a satisfying crunch to the chips' mouthfeel. Both verde and roja salsas are in good showing, the verde creamy and smooth with the roja bringing a tangy kick. Be warned, these aren't free. Servers don't actually tell you they charge for chips, which kind of sucks. Unlike the chips, margaritas are free at La Morena, though they aren't particularly good. In fact, I'd be a bit peeved if I paid for them, but free is free. My mole enchiladas disappointed, for the mole tasted more like chocolate syrup spiked with pepper than a nuanced chile sauce. The accompanying rice and beans brought some flavor to the dish, but not enough to warrant the $14 price tag. A suadero taco arrived single-wrapped and subsequently fell apart easily. The ample portion of brisket tasted fatty and oddly gamey for beef. Surprisingly, my companion's vegetarian burrito was the best entree with a soft tortilla, aggressively seasoned rice, and tender veggies. The place was surprisingly packed during our dinner, but I think that moreso had to do with people guzzling free margaritas than enjoying the food. Not a bad option if it's the closest authentic place to you, but there is better Mexican to be had in Bucks County.

About as traditional as it gets. Delicious tacos, Guac, that taste like they just came from Mexico. Also, the atmosphere is very traditional and pleasing, with Mexican music, banners etc. I will never have CHEAPotlé again

went for lunch. the waitress was breaking in a new server. they were both polite as can be. got homemade thick chips and two salsas. green is good. red is HOT. ate one fish taco (which they said was fried but was grilled - language barrier i believe). it was kind of bland. had a veggie burrito which was very good. packed with veggies and beans and cheese. they pushed the free margaritas. they are basically the super sweet store bought mix and maybe some tequila, but it was hard to tell. in any case, they were happy to bring more but i declined. i was a little bummed that they didnt have black beans. the decor was fun and they had little 'siesta salt and pepper shakers' that i liked. three stars is not shameful - but it wasn't more.

Recently moved to Warminster from Tucson, AZ. It tooks us a while to decide and try local Mexican food. We were SHOCKED at how good and authentic La Morena is for an east coast place. It can stand up to any authentic Mexican cuisine I had in my time in Tucson. The Gorditas are just fantastic!

First of all, I'm kicking myself. I'm not from Southern California, I suppose that doesn't make me a Mexican food snob. I'm from ... here? I guess I'm ok with east coast Mexican. We ordered a total of 10 tacos. We had the al pastor, carne asada, carnitas, and chorizo varieties. We ordered some chicken nachos. There were a lot of laughs coming from the kitchen. I'm glad the employees were having a good time. It actually made my meal even more enjoyable. I like to make friends. I chatted up the waitresses. They informed me they were having free beer and tequila shots, on Cinco de Mayo. I'll be here, at some point, on the 5th of May. One downside: The food is delicious when you eat it immediately. It loses a little something after sitting for about 10 minutes. Oh. I live less than 2 miles away. I'm kicking myself for not coming here sooner. P.S. I got a margarita, no problem. All I had to do was ask. I'm not a douchebag. I probably could've gotten a whole pitcher. P.P.S. I don't even like margaritas. I drank it all.

Delicious! Everything I've had here is good. Giant burritos, and free margaritas? I'm sold. Even the complimentary chips and salsa were delicious. Best authentic Mexican I've found in the burbs (outside of norristown). Definitely worth giving a shot.

True authentic cuisine. We have the best time here... the food was delicious, the complimentary margaritas were good, basic and straightforward, but hey they were free. We brought a bottle of espolon tequila with us to add a splash to them.. perfect. The staff was friendly, the space is pretty basic, really small, 6 or 7 tables, no frills but it all worked. The tacos were ridiculous..the lenqua (tongue), incredible, as were all the others. The tripe with salsa verde.. on point. Salsa were great, all in all, perfect night. Will definitely be back.

La Morena was good, not great. I left a bit disappointed. Decor/ambiance doesn't bother me.. yes it's crappy, and more often than not, the shack-looking mexican joints actually have the best and most authentic food. Holds semi-true here. I had the beef tongue, fish, and carnitas tacos. The tortillas were a little doughy for my taste and probably should have been hotter. My favorite was the beef tongue by far, which was tender, crispy, and very well seasoned. Carnitas were too dry and the fish one was just a bit of a mess. They also don't come with salsa/guac/etc., so order those on the side if you like a more complete taco. I did enjoy the complimentary chips with beans and cheese they bring to the table. As others have noted, the service is pretty slow (even when there's only two groups eating there...). Probably wouldn't go back.

Finally found an awesome taco shop on the East Coast. Food here is great, free margaritas (yes, free, I had to ask the cook if I read the menu correctly), and the atmosphere is perfect. Small little taco shop with soccer always on. My wife usually gets the taco salad and loves it, I just go with the tacos and they are great too. Been here multiple times already in just a few months.

Looking for good Mexican food in the suburbs ain't easy. Was pleasantly surprised to find this hole in the wall and found it to be reminiscent of some amazing Mexican places I've been to in the Los Angeles area. Small enough to keep it fresh and not so big that they can't handle a packed house. Ordered guacamole (excellent, but maybe too much pico and could've used a little more avocado) and tacos. Carnitas was tasty but a little dry, steak was great, and the al pastor and fish were awesome. Definitely coming back to try more off the menu.

I've been here a few times so it's time for an honest review. This place, from my experience doesn't deserve a 4.5 star rating. La Morena has very good authentic food. That is what they have going for them. They advertise free margaritas. Every time I've been here I've had to ask for margaritas to get them. This might seem expected, but nearly anyone who comes here is going to get a margarita. Beyond that, getting your second margarita is even more difficult. For me, it took getting the waitresses attention again. Upon asking for a third margarita, I get a very reluctant "okay". These margaritas were also not the least bit strong. Here's the thing, if they had great food, I'd be ecstatic. If they advertised one free margarita, then I could understand that. But I came to this place because reviews said that it was great food with free margaritas. I don't want to go to a restaurant and feel bad for asking for an advertised promotion. One last thing, my wife and I went on a Friday night during dinner rush time, there was one waitress who absolutely could not keep up. This is just no way to keep customers happy. If you want a truly unlimited free margarita experience that is a bit more of a fine experience, I suggest Tamarindos in Ambler. I couldn't get halfway through my margarita before the glass was refilled, and we had a group of about 8.

Summary: It is an almost entirely authentic Mexican restaurant with a good atmosphere at a mid-range price. Tips: know you are being charged for the chips; when deciding on food forgo the sides and appetizers for the actual entrees as those are what's good. Details: We went to La Morena Taqueria for the first time and were impressed by the authentic food and atmosphere. We were greeted by an enthusiastic staff who throughout our dining experience was very attentive. The tables had typical Mexican tablecloths and the place was decorated in a very homey and welcoming laid-back feel. We ordered Pico de Gallo, guacamole, a chimichanga, a fish taco, a chicken taco, and a pork with pineapple and onion taco. We were offered chips and salsa in the beginning and accepted which were authentic homemade chips with a bean sauce/ refried beans and a sprinkle of cheese over it. The Pico de Gallo and guacamole were one of the only things we did not like - both serving sizes were very small and the guacamole was basically just ¼- 1/2 of an avocado mixed with Pico de Gallo - we like guacamole with the main ingredient being avocados. We were offered more chips with the guacamole and Pico de Gallo and accepted again. The entrees: the chimichanga was good and a nice size; the tacos were all good, maybe a bit small, but not too noticeably, my favorite was the pork with pineapple and onion. The seasoning for it all in whole was good, nothing notable. We ended up ordering a tres leches cake for dessert and it was a disappointment. The cake part was sub-par at best with an icing on it that tasted like it was from a pre-fab sheet cake from a grocery store along with whipped cream that was definitely from a can. It surprised both of us due to the authentic food we had had so far. When we got the bill we saw that we were charged for the chips, which was annoying because nobody told us we would be especially after accepting a second bowl, it is one thing to get a free first bowl and then offered a second at a charge, but offering a first and then a second and not mentioning that both cost us was annoying.

I love Mexican food. LOVE IT. When I post on Facebook, "having tacos" or something similar, people regularly say, "No duh, surprise." I buy tortillas in bulk from the Mexican wholesaler, make my own chips and taco shells, I have my own salsa garden, etc. On top of that, being from Southern California, and having run across the border over a dozen times, I have a love for a flavor of Mexican food that has been hard to match in Hawaii, Tennessee, and Pennsylvania (places I have lived). Naturally, I was stoked when I found La Morena. Amazing chips, authentic salsa, and a fantastic selection of offerings. Add to that, the times I've come here, the wait staff have been super nice and pretty cool and attentive. Here's the problem: Don't EVER come in before your friends and place an order for margaritas without ordering food. They have been instructed to discreetly NOT bring out margaritas until you order food. But even this is tricky. I ordered chips and salsa (which cost extra), guacamole, and even offered to order their $2.75 taco. The waiter conceded, the waitress wanted to concede, and the manager said no. You can't pay for the margaritas (they don't have a liquor license), and they say they are free. According to the manager, here is the reality: You may have no more than 3 margaritas, and your first one may not come until you order a significant amount of food. Here's the thing: For a Mexican dive, $15 Fajitas, $2 chips and salsa, and $2.75 street tacos are way too much. Now, with free (watered-down) margaritas, well that's just fun. So why not? But with secret rules? No thanks. Frankly, you'd be better off finding a good Mexican restaurant with happy hour, or just bring your own margaritas. I'd easily throw down $30 or 40 at a joint where I could get a decent margarita. But to throw down $20 at a dive that you have to beg for their margaritas, and then you basically just get ice and margarita mix with a dash of tequila? One qualifier: I'm sure there are people who have abused the margarita policy in the past, so I can understand the rules. But I'm a repeat customer, tip generously, and am often floated an extra free beer at establishments I frequent. In other words: it would be nice to not feel like I have to barter for a margarita. Well, that's why I give it 2 stars. Relax the policy Ms. Manager.

After eating here numerous times, I think I have realized that this is my favorite Mexican restaurant in the entire Philly metro area. This is a hole-in-the-wall with authentic Mexican food. It's quite different in style from a lot of other restaurants. The two salsas are quite unique, especially the red one. It has a bitter, aged/fermented/dried pepper taste and is wickedly hot. I love it! The chips come out drizzled in refried beans and grated cheese, an interesting twist. I especially like (and recommend) the fish tacos, although I've had good luck with everything I've eaten here. I usually get tacos as they're a great deal for your money, but this place also serves more involved entrees too. The two downsides: service is slow, and parking is a little tricky. This place is sparsely staffed, and if the tables fill up, they can be slow at preparing food as well as less-than-fully attentive. But when the place is mostly empty, I find service is pretty good. This doesn't take away from the five stars--the staff here is very friendly and respectful, even when they are overwhelmed and understaffed. For parking, you can try to find (metered) street parking, or you can illegally park in one of the lots of the larger businesses behind the main street in downtown Hatboro and then walk over here. It's BYOB too.

Great service and the food is good. I especially like the spicy sauce you get with the chips & salsa.

Excellent and authentic - but all cash. Which is cool, just not terribly convenient. Top notch food though.

Love this little place. Don't be fooled by it's tiny space, lots of the best food comes from those places. Our first time there, the staff was genuinely happy to see us as soon as we walked in, and carried that through the whole time. There were about 4 staff members in the whole place, cooking, taking orders, answering the phone, ringing people out, the works. Busting their butts! Never once did they seem stressed, agitated, or less than happy. I loved that. The food was delicious, we ordered a few different plates and shared. So yummy. Definitely check this cozy little place out. Can't wait to return!

I can't say enough about the food here. A small dining area, it's almost just a glorified take out place. Beyond that it is the most authentic Mexican experience I've had on the east coast. It reminds me of the diners I would get with friends on vacation in the San Diego area. It might not having the dining capacity of Rey Azteca but, that is certainly its only short coming in comparison. Huge portions, delicious salsas and guac, huge menu with friendly knowledgeable service at hand! BYOB! The gorditas are probably my favorite with a side of there ridiculous chicken or beef nachos... don't forget the extra guac on the side!!

  • Mark G.

Great atmosphere. Everyone is very friendly and the food is the best Mexican I've ever had. The chimichangas are a must. I don't like margaritas, but they have free ones and I'm told they're excellent. The only downsides are the small size of the place and the cash only policy. So being cash!

We went here on a whim, looking at nearby options on Yelp. When we got there, there is NOWHERE to park. Enough room for two cars on the side of the building and then you are parking in the street. The service was just eh. It was one younger girl who was pleasant, probably just not properly trained. The chips with refried beans on top were pretty good, but we had to ask for them as well as some type of water that they wouldn't charge $2 a piece for! We ordered tacos, a chicken burrito and tortilla soup. The tacos and burrito were pretty good, but the soup was very salty. Overall pleased, just would try something different next time.

YUMMM!!!! Best, freshest guacamole ever, everything we have tried there is fresh and delicious. So what if the margaritas are small and watered down - they are free!!! This place is tiny, and it gets REALLY hot in the summer, but we don't care. Such amazing food and really easy on your wallet.

¡Este es un muy buen taqueria! This place totally turned me around on Mexican food. I thought I really didn't like it until I went to Mexico but when I returned I realized that it was the lack of good Mexican food that created my bias. Unfortunately, most of what passes as Mexican in the area is, in reality, watered down Tex-Mex or worse. First of all, La Morena is authentic. It looks and feels like a taqueria. If you conked me on the head and I woke up here, I'd pretty much think I was back in Playa Del Carmen, Tacos are the specialty here and the Lengua Tacos speak for themselves! Secondly, the waitresses are very attentive (they even tolerate my questionable Spanish speaking skills) and they provide free margaritas throughout the meal (which oddly, greatly improves my Spanish!). Thirdly, the place is so inexpensive, it borders on cheap and best of all, I don't have to drive to South Philly when I get a craving for real Mexican food. The obligatory chips and salsas are great starters, especially the red salsa (muy caliente'). Don't forget the guacamole or the pico de gallo to complement your choice of tacos or to enjoy with the chips. They serve all manners of fajitas y burritos as well and since when I've been there, most of the customers are Mexican, I've got to think they know a thing or two about Mexican food. ¡Vámos alli ahora!

While this is the best Mexican option in the area, which is not saying much, I was unimpressed. It was like poorly home cooked food...you'd be better off with goya.

I was a little worried when they offered us free margaritas, but the food was fantastic, the service was awesome, and the prices were unbelievable. And the portion sizes were huge! I will definitely go here again.

We go to this place all the time. It's hard to go anywhere else for Mexican food. I feel like its comfort Mexican food. It's so affordable and simple but wholesome. The portions are right and you are never left hungry but always left wanting more. The free margaritas and byob is a plus but not the highlight. We have gone here for years and the staff and kitchen are never difficult. They even allow us to order surprise meals (we tell them, make whatever you want for us and it is usually something so good and not on the menu). We have taken so many friends here, it is always a hit with group dinners. Thanks La Morena for being rad.

Friendly staff, adequate (free) margaritas, but really poor carne assada burrito, and similarly poor entre. Maybe an off night, but fairly disappointing.

Went here one night for dinner with the bf and was happily surprised. This place is BYOB and the give you FREE margaritas. Yes, that's right. FREE. It's a small place that looks like a pizza takeout store, but they have tables and a waiter to serve you. The food was pretty good. I got the steak fajitas. Yum! You can't beat fajitas and and free drinks. I will definitely come back.

This is kind of a 2 part review. I would give their veggie burrito & their chips & salsa 5 stars & their meat tacos 4 stars. My husband had al pastor & carne asada tacos. He was going to get the barbacoa (lamb at this restaurant, but goat at other places), but they were out of barbacoa. He said their tacos were good but he's had better (specifically Los Compadres in Winchester, Virginia). We paid to get the salsa & chips, which were very good. They drizzle their homemade chips with refried beans & they give you 2 types of salsa, a spicy red kind & a mild green kind. My husband really liked the green salsa, he asked for more to put on his tacos. The veggie burrito exceeded all expectations. It was loaded with refried beans, rice, red bell pepper, onions, & broccoli. Yes, broccoli, & it was awesome :)

Ever since I moved to PA several months ago from the West, I've been searching for my favorite type of food, Mexican, so I've been finding mexican places with the best reviews and trying them out. This was one of them. The food is not bad, but because of the high reviews, I had high hopes for some delicious Mexican food here similar to the ones I've had in Mexico, Southern California, Texas, and Oregon. I'm not sure why, but the East and Midwest can't produce good mexican food. They all taste similar. Maybe it's a regional thing, but nothing I've had was above average. Here the service is nice and all, but the food was alright. I got a carne asada burrito with guacamole on the side. The guacamole was too watery with barely any avocados and just huge chunks of tomatoes. It was a waste of 2.75 for me. The burrito had beans, rice, pico de gallo, carne asada, and sour cream. I thought the beans tasted like reheated canned beans or something. The carne asada was sorta dry and just didn't taste right. The total was like 10.80. In my opinion that's sort of steep for "authentic" mexican food. If it was delicious I wouldn't mind paying. Some of the best Mexican food is probably 5 or 6 dollars packed with much more in Socal. It's all my opinion because people here seem to love it, but if you've grown up used to Mexican food in the West coast and Mexico, then probably most or all of the Mexican food in the East won't satisfy you.

  • Tracy L.

If I lived on the west coast, I would probably rate this place less, but its the best Mexican you will get around the Philly suburbs! Best bet are the tacos - especially chorizo, the steak, and the pork & pineapple. And the only place around you can get a tongue taco. Some of the other more authentic dishes are better choices than enchiladas, burritos and the like. Friendly staff doesn't hurt. Best for takeout as it is tiny and can get rather warm in the summer.

The only problem with La Morena is that it is 5 hours from my home, and we only get to eat here when passing through Pennsylvania. On the other hand, it is well worth the detour! Here are the highlights: authentic Mexican food, not mexamerican chain food covered with cheese, very tasty homemade chips and salsa (the chips have a drizzle if refritos and just a sprinkle of queso), ask for a Margarita (not on the menu, but free, and made with fresh juice not that horrid mix), pork roasted with pineapple and onion soft corn tacos, enchiladas mole poblano, excellent rice and beans, and more! This is a little storefront. Not much seating, limited on-street parking, and simple, polite service. Don't come here for the ambiance. Don't even come here for the Margarita. Come for the delicious food.

Wow, what a find! This place gave Tortillas, our favorite 'burbs Mexican joint a run for its money. T had the Fried Pork Gorditas. They were two little sandwiches with thick corn tortillas instead of bread. I don't even like pork but it was REALLY good. Tender and flavorful. I don't usually like pork because it's bland but this could change my mind. He loved them. I had the Tampiquena. Two thin slices of steak that was served with two cheese enchiladas along with rice, refried beans and pico de gallo. And this wasn't your normal pico. It had huge chunks of fresh avocado as well. The steak was really tasty and well seasoned. The enchiladas were cheesy and covered in green sauce. Which was sooooooooo good. The rice was tasty and not mushy and the beans, which were probably made the traditional way with lard were creamy and savory. An insane amount of food for very little. I'm sure we'll be back to try other selections. It took us a good 10 minutes to narrow down the options so clearly, there is much that must be tried.

La Morena is my favorite mexican place EVER! Everything on the menu is delicious and worth trying. The produce they use is super fresh, which makes for very yummy dishes. & everyone that works there is friendly! I can't say it enough..La Morena is authentic, tasty & cheaply priced!

If you like authentic mexican food, this is the place to go! My wife and I are from the west and we moved to Philadelphia a few months ago and have been looking for a good Mexican restaurant. We have gone to so many restaurants looking for real Mexican food but could never find it, but this is it. If you love good Mexican this is te place!

La Morena has the best Mexican food around! The service is great and prices are awesome. I couldn't recommend this place enough. Just make sure to avoid peak dinner hours on Fridays and Saturdays. The restaurant is really small and waiting for a table will likely mean having to stand around outside.

  • Amanda N.

After moving to Horsham, and reading reviews online - I had to try La Morena! A whole in the wall mexican joint with authentic flavors? Sign. Me. Up. Do not waste your time. From the moment my friend noticed the cook microwaving everyone's food - we knew we should have turned around and left. You are cooking for a handful of people on a Monday for lunch....there should be no microwave required, La Morena. The food was not authentic. It had no taste!! The fact that I paid $14 for a vegetarian plate that probably cost 50 cents to make is outrageous and to be honest, you would probably enjoy a meal from Taco Bell more.

Awesome! The owners changed a couple years ago and the food has gotten much better. Great food, great prices, and the staff/owners are so friendly. This place has the most authentic Mexican food I've ever had. They have really great al pastor and fish tacos and roast pork burritos. They even have beef tongue, which I highly recommend. They have complimentary margaritas almost everyday, which I also recommend. The only down side is the restaurant is kind of small, so if you have a group of over 6, it can get tricky.

Stopped in here because I was across the street at Impact Thrift Store, which has ridiculous prices....but I will save that for another review. This is a small place, but very quaint. They actually put effort into the decor, which is more than I can say for a lot of places! The waitress was friendly, took our order quickly. I had a chicken buritto, and my husband had the carne asada. He said he would not get the carne asada again because the steak was very chewy, but what do u expect for $7.50? My burrito was delicous, inside and out! The homemade chips were delicious as well, they serve them with this awesome salsa verde sauce. And the kicker is- they serve FREE margaritas! They are free b/c they dont have a liquor license, but thats what makes this place AWESOME in my book. We will definitely be back! Bring cash, because they dont accept credit cards.

My husband and I love this place, we've been going since it first opened. It's our go-to taco joint, for sure. The chorizo and fish tacos are amazing. The menu has had some overhauls and the prices have jumped up a bit but I still think it's completely reasonable. You can't really compare the tacos to food truck taco prices, this is an establishment with employees and overhead costs. The staff is friendly and you can tell they care a lot about the quality of the food being served. Don't know what the deal is with the "free margaritas" because we go there to -eat- and not whine about free booze rules. Lol

We love La Morena! The food is always amazing. The sopes con chorizo is my absolute favorite. Service can be a little slow and it's a small place, so it can be packed on a Friday or Saturday night, but it's always worth the wait!

Best authentic Mexican food around! its insanely small but what it lacks in size it makes up for in flavor! Everyone is very friendly and there are free margaritas! Green Enchiladas turn frowns upside down. Everytime i go here its like CHEERS except i dont know anyones name and everyone knows Fraiser sux, oh yeh and YUMZ tacos.

I'm not often in Hatboro, but when I am I make a point to eat here. The food is amazing and the service is outstanding! I know Mexican food and this is some of the best, real Mexican I've ever had. Some of the best salsa I've ever had, the fried banana is heaven, free margaritas, and a vegetarian menu? Can't ask for more!

Worst service ever....waited forever brought one platter at a time. Guacamole with NO chips. One person waits on the entire place, buses and works cashier...never again..not even for the pretty good food. So frustrating

  • Michael B.

La Morena is a nice, no-frills taqueria. Delicious huevos rancheros with runny yolk eggs, guac, beans, and freshly shredded cheese (maybe cotija?) over two delicious tortillas. A standard selection of good tacos that are SUPER filled: carnitas (when are they NOT good?,) cueritos (so tender, so fatty, so rich,) carne asada, lengua, al pastor (HEAVEN,) etc. They also apparently sell barbocoa, though they've not had it when I've tried to order it. Really good, fresh tortilla chips served with dollops of refried beans. BYO, with free margarita mix. You'll need a cool drink, too, because I don't think they have air conditioning.

I love this place! My fiancé and I discovered this place while walking through Hatboro 2 years ago and have been regular visitors ever since. The food is delicious and they accommodate my pickiness. The owners are super nice and very friendly. The throw a kick-ass Cinco de Mayo party and have always been willing to accommodate my friends and I. I would eat here everynight if possible!

Fantastico. My absolutely favorite taqueria. Whether you are new to Mexican food or just want to find out - this is THE PLACE. The sweetest wait staff. Once, I asked if they would make a tray of FLAN for me to take to a party. Of course, they accomodated. Everything - seriously EVERYthing on the menu - is DELICIOUS.

This place is an authentic taqueria with good food. I have been eating here with my family about 1x per week for the last year. First, they finally installed air conditioning and that is a huge plus. The tortilla chips with refried beans and verde sauce are too good. We also love the burritos, tacos (chicken or carne asada), nachos, enchiladas and chicken flautas. We have gotten to know Benny the chef/owner and he is very personable and will accommodate your requests. They also serve complimentary margaritas on certain days. We usually stick to the same dishes, so we can't give too many details on the rest of the menu. Give this place a try, only about 8-10 tables, prices are very reasonable and food is great. Cash only and BYOB.

Similar review I gave to the Mexican restaurant Rey Azteca down the road. If you want huge portions, authentic Mexican food for almost mere pesos, then this is your place. This place is a hidden gem and reminds me of being in Mexico...and that is a good thing.

Taqueria la Morena is hands down the best and most authentic Mexican restaurant in the whole Philly area. My husband and I have been going here regularly for about 4 years, through both ownerships. I am originally from southern California, so I grew up eating Mexican food the way most people here eat hoagies. La Morena is as authentic as any place I have ever eaten. To the reviewers complaining about the lack of diet soda, and the spiciness of the hot sauce, go to On the Border or any one of the many Americanized Tex Mex places. So now onto the food. While everything I have tried has been of excellent quality, I have my favorite dishes. The chips with beans and salsa are defiantly the perfect starter. By far my favorite meal is the chiquiles with carne asada. Its grilled flank steak accompanied by their homemade tortilla chips smothered in salsa verde and cheese. Their gorditas, cemitas, tacos, and burritos are all simple and highlight the pure flavors of the ingredients. If you are new to Mexican cuisine and want something that feels familiar, try a torta. Its a typical Mexican sandwich on a soft brioche like roll. The combo of the well seasoned carne asada or carnitas and avocado, on that soft buttery bun is unlike any other sandwich you have ever had. This small family restaurant is a true gem. The owners are friendly and will make you feel right at home. If you truly enjoy experiencing other cultures or just like good food, you will not be disappointed with La Morena.

I can't believe I haven't reviewed this place yet. This place is as good as it gets for Mexican food in PA...it's GREAT. I was pissed about the lack of good Mexican food when I moved here from Southern California until I found La Morena. This place would fit right in back home. Don't take my word for it...go try this place. Everything is awesome from their homemade chips and salsa to their chimichangas, tacos, and burritos. Everything is really good.

We stopped in here the other day after dropping off some items at Impact. It was a hot Saturday and the first thing I noticed was how warm it was in there. I'm not sure if they don't have A/C or if is just wasn't working. It was decorated nice though - very festive. it is very small. I believe there were fewer than 10 tables and only about 2 people working. I'm not sure if this is a con or not but I guess it was for us a little bit. They did not have ANY diet soda. In fact they only have bottled soda in glass bottles. They were mostly Mexican sodas but they also had a few canned American varieties and bottled water. We decided to splurge and get the "sugar" sodas. they were a treat and were so good. We both ordered chimichangas. I had the chicken and I think my husband had the carnitas (pork). We both enjoyed them although I don't know if I loved it and if we go back I'll probably try something else. The chimichangas were on the mild side but they brought some hot salsa to the table which was very hot in my opinion. If you like your food hot you can just drizzle some of this on there. My favorite was the chips and salsa brought out before the meal (which is not free - just so you know - I think it was $2). The salsa was green and had a nice light taste. I could taste cucumber in it. It was good. And the chips had some refried beans drizzled on top. Very yummy! It definitely seemed more authentic than several other places in the area.

We've done both take-out and dine-in here. I loved my chicken burrito. My boyfriend had an entree, and both of our meals were a perfect size. The prices are really good! We think that it might actually be a Venezuelan owner, but it's good Mexican food for a great price! Our waiter was very nice. I'm pretty sure he was also the cook (the place is not big at all).

As good as it gets for Mexican food in the suburbs. I have eaten at many a Mexican place down the city, and this is comparable if not better. Their tortas are great, and in the realm of the taco I would recommend the al pastor (pineapple and pork). They also have a great selection of Mexican drinks, the guava jarritos being my favorite, and if you eat in there you get free margaritas. The price is good, the food is great, the staff is very friendly, what more could you ask for? Cash only, BYOB.

Great Meal. Authentic food. I had a Chimichanga, what I consider a pretty basic meal. It was prepared well and was quite filling. Hard to pass up the "free" Margaritas. Well, we all know there is no such thing "free", my wife's burrito was almost $9.00 so you know we paid for the Cuervo Gold anyway, right? I will return. Service excellent. So if you go, drink the booze to get your money's worth.

By far the best mexican place in this area!!! the nachos la morena are our favorites, and 2-3 people can easily share this dish. Our other fave is the quesadillas with the corn tortillas. We usually order the chicken in both of these. It's byob, so to the guy with th margarita issues...byo!!. Everything is always fresh and th service is great. We are always greeted with a genuine smile from everyone, and owner always seems to acknowledge our repeat visits. Even when I ask my 2 yr old what he wants to eat his first choice is always la morena...

Went in on a Saturday at around 8 PM - There are literally about 8-10 tables in there - walking in may seem a little intimidating for someone who has never been there, you walk into the middle of a dining room, there is no counter to order at and you are kind of just standing there, like um, can I get food? Luckily, someone came out pretty quickly and told us to sit anywhere - Do not let this discourage you from coming - menu is pretty simple, 10 kinds of entree / sandwiches, 5 kinds of meat - let me start by saying I am a super picky eater, no vegetables, limited meats, limited sauces, limited dairy - I was a little annoyed when I ordered chips and salsa and they came out with refried beans and some sort of crumbly cheese (maybe a cotija or an Oaxaca ) on top - but I ate around them and they were delicious- my husband got the nachos, which came out stacked high with it seemed like every ingredient they had in the kitchen and two tacos which were good quality steak and on corn torillas -Also delicious - I got the chicken quesadilla which i ordered without everything that was listed on the menu, but they still came out stuffed with lettuce and that weird cheese again, oh well, again my bad - I will know for next time, and there will be a next time, hopefully very soon.

It's cheap, it's OK food, it's fast. I just like supporting a local business.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
