It's been around as long as I've been alive. If you are from a central/southern Italian (and I mean grandmother/mother from Italy) family you've probably had sandwiches like they prepare here. The woman at the counter reminds me of my nonna, speaks Italian with you (if you speak it to her first, obv), hand cuts the tomatoes for sandwiches(!) to order, and is simply charming. Their cheesesteaks are decent, their Italian subs are delicious, and (when available) their meatballs are dead ringers for my nonna's. Cons: no lettuce, no credit cards, randomly closed for long periods.

I walk into Mike and Emma's with an open mind and empty stomach on a rainy afternoon a few days before Christmas hoping for some magic. I feel as though I am immediately transported to 1950s smallville. The decor is outdated but very clean. A nice gentleman takes my order. I'll have a cheesesteak and an Italian hoagie. I'm fat. The cheesesteak was decent, I'd say average and the hoagie totally brought me back to my grandmom's kitchen and reminded me of her homemade hoagie. I'd absolutely go back to M &E's but I wouldn't go out of my way for it.

Heard about this place word of mouth. Reminds me of places I grew up with in South Philly, family owned & quality ingredients. Great cheesesteak, on my "A" list. Next time I'll try the tuna. They use Cento brand. Its in olive oil and in my opinion the best tuna you can get in stores.

Got lucky and found this Place with the help of yelp. One of The best sandwiches I have ever had. The owners/staff and guest are as friendly as can be. The small hoagie is huge and the large is massive! I will be eating here tomorrow as well. Fresh cut meat good bread and excellent toppings. Love it!

This place is spectacular in its simplicity! What I love the most about their hoagies is they don't use an ass-ton of lettuce to add filler to low quality meat. Mike & Emma's uses quality cold cuts on their hoagies and they do them up with a nice subtle touch of oregano, salt, pepper, and olive oil.. and that's it. Their hot sandwiches and burgers fall right in line with their cold sandwich cousins, from cheesesteaks to hamburgers, they're done up with an excellent attention to detail. It just sucks that I'm writing this on a Sunday and i have to wait till Tuesday to get one.

This place makes a true Italian hoagie. A real Italian hoagie shop. Cheesesteaks are good too. Lots of other great sandwiches and hoagies. Makes a fantastic egg breakfast sandwich with peppers. Family run and friendly. Has a few small tables to eat in. Closed Sunday and Monday. Cash only.

It's a Delco classic. It's been around since I was a little boy. It was my step dads favorite hoagie place. All meats sliced to order. They have always used real prosciutto . Cheese steaks are top rate. Worth the drive. Very old school.

Heard the burgers were great. I was hungry. So to Mike and Emma's it was. The burger was paper thin patties stacked in a submarine roll. Since they don't have lettuce here, I had fried onions and ketchup on it. The cheese was American. There is no fryer so forget fries - grab a bag of chips. Had a decent selection of soda - I had a Virgil's cream. How someone could say this is a great burger is beyond me. So many better choices.

Tasty food, friendly family owned location. Driving through Philly stopped by to check out due to yelp rating. Cheesestake with American cheese was great.

The greater hoagies in the whole world. Everything is fresh, slice the meat right there when you order and cut the tomatoes or pickles right before they go on your sandwich. It is heaven. Love the people there too. Get the cheeseburger hoagie you won't regret it!

Wow, such a nice older couple run the place. had a great hoagie with long hots. I googled the store after I left and it said that they have been there for over 40 years! That is so great!

Probably the best hoagie shop in delco. Fresh is an overused adjective, but wholly applies to this cozy joint. Their Italian is a healthy dose of meats, sliced to order, as well as the onion and tomato, cut right onto your sandwich. HOT long hots, the way it should be. Real olive oil. When you order a whole, the first half will have you stuffed, but your taste buds while override your stomach and force you to finish this monster. Great steaks as well. Lettuce? Produce junction is up the road, chump. Mayo? You're not in Iowa, duder. This is where to go if you want the real deal hoagie. The interior is barebones, offering no distraction from the taste smack down about to unfold in your mouth. Do it.

A Delco staple. Family owned, old style steak and hoagie shop. My favorite cheesesteak spot on the Blvd. also a big fan of the cheeseburger hoagie. Not a huge fan of the hoagie because they don't cut the meat fresh. Go with a cheesesteak and you won't be disappointed.

This place has been around so long, but I never bothered to come here until now. This is how I see it in Delco. If you have your favorite pizza or sandwich places, they're often in the same town as you, and you don't venture out past them. Because there are so many pizza and sandwich shops in our area, we usually don't have to go farther than a mile to get our fix. This place is out of that mile or two range for me. It's not far away by any means, but it's a few miles away, and when you pass 4 or 5 sandwich shops on the way, you tend to stop at one of those first. Basically, if I'm driving down to this part of Mac Dade Blvd, it isn't to get a cheesesteak. But several friends have talked this place up to me. So, in order to be the proper Mac Dade Blvd Eating Guru, I gave them a shot this week. I'll say right off the bat that I wish they had more choices. You see, they had a chicken cheesesteak which I was in the mood for, but I really wanted a buffalo chicken cheesesteak. Heck, I would have settled for some hot sauce for the sandwich. I was informed they don't make them, nor do they carry hot sauce. I thought everyone carried hot sauce nowadays. I won't hold it against them though. Just know that their menu is limited. But, I will give it up to them. The chicken cheesesteak was well made, on a fresh roll, and very tasty. I can tell they take some pride in what they do make. And that's worth something. I may not drive down here often for a cheesesteak. But I'll give them my props. They are a worthy sandwich for the suburbs.

So my needs for a great cheesesteak goes like this: - Meat texture (chopped) - Meat amount (overflow of roll) - Roll quality (crispy outside, so soft inside) - Cheese amount (at least 5 slices) - Cheese placement (mixed in, not on the top/not on the bottom) - Onion texture (lightly sautéed) - Onion amount (throughout, not overflow) Yes, you read that correct, maybe I am a little crazy. Tasty! This is my mom's new favorite stop for cheesesteaks and I had the pleasure of tasting them yesterday and YUM! They went against my first rule - HOWEVER - it was delicious! The meat was not as minced as I prefer but the texture was amazing, literally melted in my mouth. It was so tender. The roll was perfect, crispy and so soft inside. The cheese amount could have been a little more, however, now I know to order extra cheese. The onions were great too. Yum, now I want another. My mom says it's a small mom and pop shop that has been around forever, we had our steaks to go so next time I will have to go in and say hi. We also tasted the hoagie, it was a bit different, the tomatoes were chopped and added to the roll with the onions and there was no lettuce. However, the cold cuts were great and the roll was delicious, so I loved it.

Ok. I get it. And am completely a fan of small, local, mom and pop joints (esp ones ran by lil old Italian grandmoms where you can see their ironing board in the back room, still steaming from the early morning "housecoat" ironing). The vibe and authentic, no nonsense "we don't do lettuce" approach is at least 2 stars. The soft, just chewy enough, perfectly textured roll is a half star. The sliced-in-front-of-you cheeses are a half star. So for location, charm, and service Mike and Emma's is a win. Price? 9.00 for a hoagie comprised of only tomatoes and cheese and good bread? Not so much. Granted, I'm a vegetarian, so really Mike and Emma only had 3 ingredients with which to "wow", but sadly, the only thing that "wowed" me was the price for those three so-so ingredients. Ps: I was looking forward even to hand-sliced tomatoes, as other reviews suggested (it's that old-school service and quality thing that gets me:)...but on my visit, I was given what equated to tomato "salad" on my hoagie...rough chopped tomatoes and salt/pepper/oregano in olive oil. A little diced onion thrown in, as well. Not bad, but definitely not good either-or what I was expecting.

Why is it that this small little shop that doesn't even accept credit cards can make a better cheesesteak than the shop near my neighborhood dedicated to cheesesteaks? Seriously, I'm shocked. There's a place near my home that is strictly about cheesesteaks and they're terrible. But if I go for a 3 minute drive down, I find this little gem and treated to a fantastic steak. This place is quaint but the quality of the food is amazing. I loved my steak. Perfectly seasoned, great bread, and the price was awesome. Sadly, they don't deliver, so it means I always have to take a drive over... but it's worth it.

This place is wonderful in a lot of ways and definitely deserves the outstanding reviews. It's super old school in all the best ways. You definitely feel like you've gone back in time when you walk in. Super delicious cheesesteaks. Their Italian hoagies are some of the best I've ever had. They slice all their meats to order, they even cut the tomatoes right onto the roll. It's the kind of place your dad used to go to, and you should go to, and your kids will go to because it's just good old fashioned tasty ass hoagies. As an aside, I would skip the tuna hoagie. I've only had it once but they barely put any tuna on it so it ended up being mostly roll. Pretty disappointing considering the caliber of their other offerings.

I took my girlfriend to Mike & Emma's Sandwich Shop on a whim just because I'd heard so many good things about the place. Upon entering the store, I was immediately intrigued. It really was like taking a step into another era! We were a little confused by the menu, but the precious little woman behind the counter was very quick to comfort us with her Italian charm. We shared a few laughs with her as we placed our order: a cheesesteak for me and a cheeseburger for the girl. We were informed that only cash was an acceptable form of payment, so it was off to Wawa while our order was prepared. Upon returning, we found our hosts patiently waiting to dress our sandwiches with our favorite toppings. Just salt and pepper for me -- "No problem" --. For the burger, my girl likes lettuce, toma -- "We don't do lettuce." -- OK...tomato, onion, ketchup. Another awkward moment. As we walk away from the counter, I feel bad for my girlfriend because she was just served this weird burger - a hoagie roll containing about 7 small patties topped with tomato, onion, and ketchup - not an ordinary order for her, but oh, well...we're open-minded. The sandwiches were good. I have had better cheesesteaks, and I have had worse. My girlfriend said the burger was pretty good. She liked the fresh cut - not sliced - tomato. All in all, a decent place that might get better with some getting used to. The atmosphere of Mike & Emma's is such a familial one that it is hard to not want to give it a second visit.

Listen, these are the best Italian hoagies you will ever have the privilege of trying! All the elements are in place: - Good bread. - Quality meats, fresh-cut to order for each sandwich. - Fresh vegetables that taste like vegetables. - Good olive oil. - Hot peppers, if ordered, are in the bottom of the sandwich. Clutch! - Retro cash register. - Little old Italian people that fondly remind me of my grandparents. If more people in the area knew the brilliance of Mike & Emmas, no-one would ever order a hoagie at Wawa again.

Best cheesesteak in Delco (and possibly on the planet. Second only MAYBE to John's Roast Pork). This shit is life changing.

I have a confession to make. I have weighed in on all the cheesesteak debates, have joined the mob mentality of denouncing Pats and Genos, have debated the pros and cons of wiz wit, yet Ive only really had one Cheesesteak in philly (Tony Lukes) and that was recently. Yes folks, as my Alaskan Fuble friends were trying their first true Philly cheesesteak, I was too. There, I said it! This is not to say, Im not a cheesesteak afficianado. Ive been eating cheesesteaks for years, albeit suburb cheesesteaks. Growing up, we spoiled ourselves at Mama's in Bala Cynwood. In my first home away from home, it was Thunderbird, in Broomall. We moved to Newtown Square and discovered La Forno (actually in Media.). Im not sure if theres a big difference between the suburb steak and the city steak. Based on limited experience, it seems that the suburb steaks are more chopped up as opposed to the ones in the city using the long slabs. I also never saw wiz as an option too regularly. Im accustomed to american. Despite the bad press, im curious to just break down and try the wares at Pats and Genos, if for nothing else than to be able to chime in on the scorn, without feeling guily and being a fraud. If only I wasnt so pleased with my suburban steak havens, that I often stumble across. This brings me to Mike and Emmas, in Folsom. I had heard some buzz about this place, soon after I moved in just a few blocks away from it. Walking distance: Helping Guilty Junk Eaters Rationalize Eating A Forearm Sized Sandwich Since The Dawn Of Man. I made my way here, one recent winter afternoon, to see if it lived up to the hype. I was greeted warmly, by who I can only imagine to be Mike and Emma themselves. I ordered my cheesesteak and Emma got to work on it immediately, with the grim efficiency of a master short order cook. The whole process took about 5 minutes, the sandwich cost about $7 and I was on my way. They have seating there, but I needed the brisk walk home, to be able to enjoy my cheesesteak, guilt-free. My only complaint about the place, was that they didnt seem to carry my favorite soda, Dr Pepper. Maybe they were just out. I hope so, because I feel that Dr Pepper enhances all sandwiches (Mr Pibb is decent too, but lets face it, he should have stayed and got his degree). But I digress, the soda is a minor complaint, especially when the sandwich rocks. Yes, dear readers, it was a good cheesesteak. The bread was perfect. The meat was a little different than Id come to expect in the burbs, not slabs but less chopped than usual, very similar looking to roast beef. Maybe emma just cant chop it up , like the usual muscle heads making steaks can, maybe she doesnt want to. Either way, it worked for me. The meat was seasoned well ( sometimes they dont salt and pepper the meat while it cooks, and it makes for bland meat) and the onions were done to perfection. Im guessing it was american cheese, based on the consistency. Sometimes, places will use provolone or mozzerella, and for me, the chewiness of those cheeses dont work in a cheesesteak. I prefer how American melts and tastes with the chopped meat, and at Mike and Emmas, it was a tasty cheese. This was the first big meal ive eaten, since my hospital stay, and I couldnt have asked for a better "Welcome Back to Gluttony" than the cheesesteak at Mike and Emmas. I hear they do burgers and hoagies well too, so this place is definitely a keeper. Knowing there are such good steak shops, out here in the burbs, make me les inclined to see what the fuss is on Passyunk. And if you think this will keep me from joining the fray, in any Cheesesteak debate then you dont know me very well. I like everything on the boards to stink of my opinion.
