Wow where do I start? I was introduced to this place through an Uzbek friend of mine years ago. Back then it was very exclusive with mostly Russian/Uzbek/Kazak people but has expanded and now has a nice American following. The atmosphere is beautifully done, I always dress to impress as most women wear dresses and men in slacks and a nice shirt. On the weekends they have live singers/ DJ's with a variety of music and truly makes for an unbelievable and lively atmosphere. They even have a belly dancer if you get there for dinner early enough, I believe she leaves around 8 or 9!! Just being in this setting is worth the drive from NJ. Now for the best part, the meal! Everything I have ever tasted here is delicious and everything is served family style except for the kebabs they are per order. Don't stick with the typical dishes you can order anywhere, go off the beaten path and I guarantee you will be happy!! Always start with the bread which is homemade, hot and crispy. Some things we ALWAYS get are 1st course-Samsa's (delicious sautéed meat and onions in a flaky crust with this sauce I put on everything I can). 2nd course- Achchik-Chuchuk salad, Nejnost salad or Crab salad. 3rd course- Laghman soup (great lamb and noodle soup). 4th course- Pilaf Samarakand (A MUST) and some kebabs, typically boneless lamb or salmon. If you have room, the bakhlava or napoleon cake slice. (big enough for 3). You can have a 5 course meal for two for around $50 and you will not be able to eat it all. I brought my parents here and we had about 7 courses for 4 people for about $110. This place is absolutely amazing, service is perfect, food phenominal and atmosphere unlike anything I have ever experienced. I will make the 45 min drive from NJ for years to come. OH its BYOB and these people drink a shot of vodka before and after each course! lol

Great energy. Great service. Amazing food. Best to go there first with a Russian friend who knows the food. But even if you stumble in unaided, as an American you'll be impressed that the waiters' English is more that competent to help you understand the menu. If you're an American going with a Russian friend, be sure s/he gets the Russian language menu. Weekend belly dancer is classy, talented, gorgeous and not trashy. Dance floor music pulsates with lots of big screen eye candy of non-USA music video clips. During the week, it's a quiet, intimate lunch spot. Amazing that it shares a parking lot with the Giant Grocery store and those clueless shoppers would rather go to the creepy burger place on the other side of the parking lot rather than walk over here to have a glorious new food adventure.

Most people prob don't think of Central Asia as a prime culinary region. Well think again if you're talking about the food from Uzbekistan. It is really good - at least it is as prepared at Samarkand Restaurant. Samarkand (named after the fabled Silk Road capital of Tamerlane's empire) is located in Feasterville across from the well-known Buck Hotel and only a few streets above the Philadelphia city limits. Inside it is a beautiful looking restaurant with lots of ceramics and art works from Uzbekistan. It's pretty large as on weekends they have music shows and dancing ala the other ex-Soviet restaurants in Northeast Philly. But lets get to the food. Laghman soup is a classic of Uzbek cooking and here the soup is splendidly rendered - full of taste in every spoonful. The Lepeshka bread from Samarkand is a perfect accompaniment to the soup. Follow that up with totally delicious Khonum which is a large dumpling filled with beef and onions and potatoes and then served sliced. For the main course I went for the national dish of Uzbekistan - Pilaf Samarkand. This rice dish with lamb, beef, and carrots is very filling especially when you combine it with an Achchik-Chuchuk salad (thinly sliced tomato and onion salad). Anyway this is quite a feast ... and it is all very nicely prepared and presented. The staff here is extremely friendly - throw away all your Soviet stereotypes of service. And if you are new to Uzbek food, they even have a small booklet in English with pictures that describe the highlights of Uzbek cuisine. The prices are def moderate and it's a BYOB restaurant so you can save money on wine which is always good for my budget. Samarkand is a destination restaurant. And once you try Uzbek food, if you are like most people you'll be going back a second time. Hey, tell the host that Jeff on Yelp recommended it to you and hopefully they'll be sure to spend even more time with you helping you select a dinner that will be sure to please!

First off, do not advertise delivery if you will only deliver within a mile of your restaurant. The online order placement was convenient but when we tried to get it delivered we were denied. We only live 1.2 miles away, but when called the restaurant, we were denied the delivery. I've been here before about 2 years ago and will say the food was better. The portions are still large and you do get quite a bit for your money, but the quality definitely is subpar. Plov was decent, with nice seasoning. Potatoes with mushrooms, although not wild, as I expected were also good. Samsa was good and large. Cheburek's were awful! There was absolutely no meat in there. Completely empty and devoid of flavor. Greek saad is yummy as usual. Shashlik was a disappointment. The lamb shashlik was made up of very small and very thin pieces of very fatty lamb. It's hard to even explain, but they were not cubes but flat thin pieces. Chicken shish kabobs were ok and actually had decent smokey flavor. Lyulya kabobs which are made up of ground lamb were completely undercooked. Reheated next day were actually had good flavor. Wish the owners didn't try to save and put out great food like they used too.

Service was horrible. Dishes did not come out in a timely manner. Half my party were done eating and full before they brought out the other half of the party's dishes. Great birthday present for my mother. Also, the food was bland.

So I'll start by saying that I'm not really a fan of this type of food. I went there on a Saturday night with a small group (maybe 8 of us) around 9pm. Since this style of food isn't really my forte, I let others order for the whole table. They chose multiple different types of kabobs; lamb, beef, chicken. I don't recall all of the other foods we got, and it was quite a feast, but there was little that wasn't enjoyable. The atmosphere made this place a 4 star. When we were first seated, the ambience was really nice, and I thoroughly enjoyed the guitarist they had playing in the room. He was really talented and it was the perfect volume. At around 10 the fun really started. They had a couple really fun and energetic Russian singers, and a beautiful belly dancer! She was stunning! As the DD, I had nothing to drink, so alcohol did not sway my opinions in any way... But I can assure you, everyone who was drinking was having a blast as well. I wouldn't go there once a week because I prefer other cuisines, but it's certainly not a place I'd shy away from.

Have been here for a birthday party. I liked cabin where we were sitting. Excluded, music did not bother. From food I liked beef Shish kebab and Lula kebab. Nice meat choices. However salads are so so. Overall nice experience, but nothing special.

As a Russian child growing up in the Northeast, I have been to my fair share of Russian restaurants. I feel that none compare to this one. Samarkand is one of the newer Russian restaurants in the area where one can eat, dance, and have a banquet all night long. Although it is farther from the Northeast than its competitors, it is worth visiting because it is one of two Uzbek restaurants, and it is the only one that does Uzbek food justice. The workers here all speak Russian and English. They are very friendly and attentive. While I was eating the first course, the server managed to constantly change my plate without disturbing me. For who it may concern, it is BYOB and you are welcome to stay as long as you would like on the weekends to enjoy the live music, even if you are done eating. I have been here many times and I have gotten take out many times as well; however, they recently changed the interior, musicians, and some of the food, only making it BETTER! They play current top 40 hits in addition to Russian music. They have live music on Friday and Saturday nights and a very talented belly dancer! All at no extra cost! The food is reasonably priced and I must recommend: Lagman soup Manti Samsa Cheburek Liver Shish kebabs Seafood salad The plov/pilaf In addition, any other shish kebabs or salads will leave you satisfied! I highly recommend this restaurant whether you need a place to have a banquet, dinner, or take out. Don't be scared, they have a menu in Russian and English!

I don't even wanna give this place a star but I just ate there and let me say they act like there a 5 star restaurant or hotel the way they have their rules and their dress code! . On the outside it looks like a shack but beautiful inside. Food made me sick, salmon was disgusting and not cooked and everything else was bland and tasteless. You would think it would be better considering how they present themselves. Please get a new interior decorator and fix your place up, what is up with that fountain red water thing in front of the desk? Looks like blood..and I can't stand the cool walls they made , it would look better if somebody would paint it again . I seen a waitor seat a party and the guy went to sit and the booth made a noice and sounded like the seat was broken ...ummm yeah what in God's name. You add a tip to people's bills already that is ridiculous , sorry but who do you people think you are. .besides that Thank you for making me sick, you guys should be ashamed of your damn business. Instead of worrying about how people dress when they come in with that stupid sign worry about your FAKE MACHINE MADE dirty RUGS! AND anybody that thinks this place is good is obviously related to the people that work there or is LYING or never had REAL KEBAB AND MIDDLE EASTERN FOOD.

It's not always sunny in Samarkand, but it's damn sure alright. We arrived and were seated within several minutes, and got water right away. Our waitress was relatively attentive but disappeared for several points during the night when we couldn't find her. The mood was set by the low lighting and loud music, and we quite enjoyed the vibe from the place, but we could have gotten some more attentive service. My boyfriend and dad ordered the beef stroganof, which came on french fries, and they I think I enjoyed it as much as they did, you'll see why in a minute... My mom ordered the chicken kiev, which was good, garlicky, and I had a bit of while I was waiting for my meal. I ordered the half chicken, which took quite a while to prepare, but when it finally came out, it was decent. The problem was, the dishes came out so sporadically (the stroganof first, chicken kiev 10 minutes later, and the half chicken 15 minutes after that) that we weren't really able to eat together. I think the waitress said something to us about the chicken taking 25 minutes at the beginning of the meal, but it wasn't enough notice to let us know that we should have placed out orders separately. Really, we should have just told them we wanted the orders all together, but we didn't think that far ahead, so we all ended up eating dinner at different times and it was a bit awkward. The dinners were tasty, and the entertainment was great, but we might not be back again considering the wait we had to endure for the chicken. As far as the entertainment went, I liked the belly dancer a lot. She was a lot of fun, and we enjoyed watching her perform. Verdict: go for a relaxed night out, and specify you want ALL MEALS BROUGHT TOGETHER :) Enjoy the belly dancing. And revel in the garlicky goodness.

Wow this place is amazing! For me outside you would not know what you are walking into the moment I walked inside the restaurant there was an immediate feeling of warmth and comfort but there was so much for my eyes to feast on absolute 5 stars on the ambiance of Samarkand, and 5 stars for the service and attentive staff, recommend trying their delicious food fantabulous!!

Samarkand was very accomodating for our large group, and the price was definitely right. Everyone had a large amount of food that night, and we all took home plenty of leftovers afterwards. Even so, we had to leave some food on the table, it was just too much! So when it comes to value, there are no complaints. However, the food is really just average, especially in comparison to Uzbekistan down the street. I thought the kebabs were very tough, and I had pieces of cartilage and fat in my manti. Overall, quality of the food wasn't impressive, and the flavor was also lacking. The dancefloor is very small, so it's good for an intimate group of people, not going all out until the wee hours of the morning. For such a small restaurant, I thought the music was way too loud - they really need to decide whether they are a russian party place, or a small family restaurant.

up to FIVE stars, as this restaurant never fails to deliver: whether we're here with the Russians, with the Americans, or even for the sports team family reunion -- we never leave disappointed. The food is always fresh, delicious, made to your needs and preferences; if you are in the mood for entertainment {belly dancing and/or live music} you'll find it here; BYOB is always great to ensure you have just the right libation: so your intimate dinner, friends' gathering, birthday or any party is guaranteed to be fun and enjoyable. Many a night, we do a take out -- and the food quality is to the same standards as served in-house. P.S. the running kids are still there -- but, as Russians, we have a thick skin, and ignore them: wish their parents didn't.

Along with Bukhara,Samarkand is one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world, prospering from its location on the trade route between China and the Mediterranean countries- (Silk Road). At times Samarkand has been one of the greatest cities of Central Asia.

I came to the restaurant with a group of Russian and non-Russian guests. We were all extremely pleased with the food, the atmosphere, the service, the belly dancer and the singing/dancing. Except for our party, it seemed that everyone else there was from former USSR. I guess you can trust the native locals to know where to go. Everything we ordered (and shared family style) was amazingly well prepared. One of our friends was a well-traveled food connoisseur and he was impressed. The price was very reasonable considering the amount of food and the entertainment. Plus it's a BYOB. It was kinda loud but we sat far from the stage and were able to have a conversation. I would definitely come back here for a celebration or just for a getaway with a cultural experience and dancing.

Boo! Food is more what is considered "Russian" in the far northeast rather than authentic Uzbeki. They have thrown every cliche of what is perceived as typical items for the area - domed buildings, camels, seating with no chairs but pillows. It is all a guise. This place resembles Golden Gates or one of the other countless "Russian Restaurants" in the area more than anything else. It is all novelty and no substance. What I mean by this is there is the "live" singer (read: guy with a laptop looping beats and singing all the typical Russian/Ukrainian songs). This is cranked up above the tv so the noise level is deafening at best. The food is just ok, so that is were we begin with just ok. Very little of it is authentic. When you have things like onion blossoms on the menu you can't claim to be authentic anymore. Some of the food was good but most of it was over salted - I mean gerbil salt lick - over salted. I think I got my sodium intake for the month tonight. The bread is terrible. The meat is ok, but once again don't plan to get anything other than well done. The nail in the coffin is the service. We are party of 3. We were led between tables, one of which the other servers were trying to reset and were not smart enough to stop for 2 seconds and let us through. So we bring wine because it is a BYO. We were not asked if we wanted it opened until after we ordered food. No no, it is just decorative. The service was half assed all night, and here is why. They added 15% tip automatically to the bill. We had 3 people. Count them 1-2-3. No where on the menu is this stated at they add in the tip. So as a server why they hell would you bother to do a good job if you know you are getting 15% either way?!?! That is what you have here. No effort because there is no need to do so. I will not be back here. Instead I will continue to go to Shish Kabob Palace which serves authentic food, has better service, for better prices!

We went here for dinner on 12/21 to celebrate my older brother's birthday. First, it should be noted that under previous ownership, this site used to house a Russian mini-market AND its adjacent Russian restaurant. Upon entering the premises, it is quite clear that the present owner(s) spent a lot of money on renovations. The main dining room is nicely decorated and quite expansive - almost deceivingly so. Now, onto the menu and food. If you are not able to read Russian, you are out of luck as that is the only language their menu is printed in. However, their take-out menu is printed in English only. In terms of food, we ordered the Lagman soup, bread, various salads, plov, and shiskabobs, and potatoes; it was all brought out in fast-fashion and everyone said they enjoyed their meal. Regrettably, we arrived (and left) shortly before the belly dancing started. Overall, we had a pleasant dining experience and judging from previous reviews, this is a common theme. It is particularly interesting to note this in light of the numerous Russian-oriented dining options available along Bustleton Avenue. Basically, this is a war of attrition.

To compare the Uzbek, Russian and Turkish restaurants in the Northeast, Philadelphia area is unfair as each has its individual flavors and specialties. Samarkand food offers a nice blend and combination of its Uzbek: Persian; Russian Turkish history. . The meaning of Samarkand is : "Stone Fort" or "Rock Town") and it is the second largest city in Uzbekistan and the capital of Samarqand Province. The city is most noted for its central position on the Silk Road between China and the west. The decor reflects a combination of Uzbek, Turkish and Mongol history. We have dined there 4 times in the past 6 months and the food has been consistently good. We found no 'gristle' in our meat, as stated by another reviewer and the kabobs were flavorful and tender . The lamb chops were grilled to perfection and although a bit pricey, were delicious. . The salads crisp, the fish fresh all served with nice presentation. The wait staff is very helpful and accommodating, explaining the different dishes and helping with translation. We have dined extensively throughout the Middle East and are delighted to have the selection of Russian, Uzbek and Turkish restaurants to chose from in Philadelphia , Bucks County and New Jersey. Samarkand has been consistently good and an enjoyable dining experience and we will certainly go back again.

A very pleasant meal. The somewhat hidden dining room would be good for venue for a function. Helpful and pleasant Natasha assisted with the menu. Plov was good, as was the ground lamb shish. Bread was piping hot and excellent. Baklava and tea were solid. That said, Of the "big three" Uzbek restos in this hood (Samarkand, Uzbekistan, and Shish Kebob Palace), Samarkand runs third. A good showing, but the food and the atmosphere at the other two is a hair better.

What a fun place to go for weekend dinner. Good food, live Russian music and belly dancing! The food is very good and very authentic. Highly recommend the kabobs. The best is the lamb ribs kabob. Bing a bottle of vodka to this BYOB and join in the fun with other fellow diners (mostly Russians).

I really wasn't crazy about this place. I seriously expected so much more. My brother, mother and I went there to eat an early dinner and wasn't impressed at all. We ordered the lagman soup, 3 appetizers, shawarma, rice, and beef kebab. The legman soup and kebab were good, where as the appetizers, rice and shawarma were horrible. The appetizers say (2 pcs) so we ordered 3 appetizers thinking it'll be 6 pcs and got only 3, we asked where the rest of it was, the waiter said the minimum amount to order was 2 appetizers not 2 pcs each order. Which made no damn sense to me. Then we got our lamb shawarma and it was just horrible. They had a store bough gyro bread on the plate with ketchup, mayo and fatty lamb on top. Disgusting!!! Who puts mayo and ketchup on a shawirma platter? On top of that I couldn't even eat the lamb because every bit had a piece of fat on it, they did not trim it one bit. So basically I paid for store bought bread and fat. Finally, the rice.... Idk who puts gravy on rice, but I'm glad we got a small plate of that. Tasteless rice with brown gravy on top, that tastes like it came out of a can. Which it didn't even say it'll have gravy on top!!! I will never come back to this place, even if you paid me. Such a waste of money. If you do decide to go, order anything but the damn shawarma and rice.

We came on Thursday night with our good friends from DC. They stay in King of Prussia area, but called us and asked if they can come to our area just because they want to come back to Samarkand again. They were there last year and could not forget. We enjoyed last night. Food as always was outstanding, fresh made salads, garlicky potatoes, shash kebabs, their special bread. For desert we had delicious Napoleon and baklava with a green tea. We were very pleased with service. Our waiter Ravshan from Tashkent was very nice, prompt and helpful. Our friends from DC are very sorry that they don't have place like this in their area. They. Look forward to come back soon and visit this place again We have so many good places in Bucks county, but I would recommend this place to anyone at least for one time experience . You would never be sorry and BYOB and enjoy. Thank you Samarkand for making the Bucks county area even better

The food was not impressive. The sea bass was inconsistent, some bites were dry and chewy, other bites were tasty; the sauce left something to be desired. The kebabs were good, but we all agreed Absolute is better.

One star down... Cartilages in the dolmas again - and even larger pieces I couldn't chew.... Ewww! I asked the waitress to change the dish - she went in the back and came out saying she tried but she couldn't. Needless to say - I was charged for a dish I took one bite from! I am never ordering dolmas again. In fact I am considering not going back. I gave it too many tries. The only good thing here is entertainment (which can get very loud at times). So, if you want to spend your money on a more quality dinner - try some place else!

A very different experience! My DH and I went there on a Saturday night and it was like walking into a club. The music was very loud, the lights were very dim and there were laser light shows on all the walls. There was a belly dancer dancing around the tables for tips. We just kinda sat back and soaked it all in. The place was packed. There were families, ladies out on a girls night and quite a few tables that were dressed up as if they were going to the club. This is a place where customers spend the whole night. My DH and i were seated at one of the last tables available and we were the first to leave 1 1/2 hours later. We saw ppl order a little food, go have a smoke break, come back for a little more, go dance on the dance floor. This is not something i've ever seen before but hey "when in Rome" - right? The food was just OK. We compared it to Uzbekistan and Kebob Palace and it ranked last. We ordered 5 kebobs and sides. The meat were poor quality and a lot of fat. They tasted ok but very fatty and grisly. I assume because everyone stays for hours is the reason we couldn't our waitress for about 30 mins. I don't think we will be back but I am glad I went. It was very cool to experience another culture so close to home!
