Oh my goodness, what can I say about a place that donates all of its time (EVERYONE is a volunteer), and all of its earnings, (including tips which they will NOT accept-the jar money is also donated) to my most favorite charity in the entire UNIVERSE-ANIMALS, who desperately need our help to survive in this ALL-TOO-OFTEN-Cruel world? I APPLAUD YOU!!!! Nothing further need be said. However, there are quite a few things I WANT to say.... I had been meaning to make it over there ever since I had read about them in Main Line Today mag. I'd passed by several times before that & thought it looked like a cute little place, but the impact was really made when I read about them, Who They Are, and What They Do. So finally, the other day I was going there specifically to DONATE money and possibly have lunch, lunch was definitely not the priority. I walked in and found it to be a warm and inviting little spot, really adorable. They also have really cute gifts at incredibly reasonable prices, (MOST BOOKS ARE $1.00), and no tax is added to gift items or meals. I was seated at an adorable little table by the window in the side room. My waitress, Beth highly recommended the chicken salad, she told me it was her absolute favorite. So, considering that was just what I happened to be in the mood for, I went with the chicken salad on wheat. It was SOO YUMMY, light & healthy, not a lot of mayo, & a few cherries added a nice tart/sweet flavor. Hate to sound like a broken record, but it was, if not THE Best Chicken Salad I've ever had, then it came darn close to it. And believe me, i am picky, particularly with chicken, as any gristle or fat grosses me out. With meat it is almost expected, & easily seen, but chicken fat skeeves me & there wasn't a drop on this chicken. Delish. Baked Goods looked wonderful & the chocolate they're made with comes directly from Paris, as the lady that manages the cafe has an apartment there. (Also had some fabulous little eiffel tower keychains in all diff colors for only $2.00-from PARiS-so sorry I didn't get a coupla those). Soooo, I bet you're wondering how I made out. Well after a great lunch I purchased some really cute knick-knacks, (BTW, I got an encyclopedia sized book for $1.00- it was a STEAL!!!). Then I donated a nice chunk of change (& i don't mean the "chump" kind). Next time I will up the ante- I'm shootin' for $1,000, say next month. And I would encourage any & all of you who can spare the "change" to please donate to The Black Cat Cafe in Devon, or to Paws or Pals, PLEASE,OH,PLEASE, HELP to SAVE The Lives of these Animals who can't help themselves. Their lives depend on the compassion, generosity, & kindness of human beings. Please Donate & Save Lives Today.

Went here with my wife and two friends. They took our reservation on a Saturday, and we were seated as soon as we arrived. The environment is very cozy, with different tables and chairs within a "home" like setting. The servers were all very nice, and quick to refill drinks, or any request we had. The food was absolutely delicious. My wife had the praline French toast, while I had an omelette. One of our friends is vegan, so she really enjoyed the menu (especially the banana vegan French toast). You can't beat the prices, service, menu, and environment. Oh...and all their $$$ goes to saving animals. Even though we live an hour away, we'll be back!

The food was delicious, the cats outside made this place super worth the drive! Friendly staff, friendlier cats, good food, cozy atmosphere. Would recommend!

This is a pleasant place for lunch, having a good sandwich selection - including vegetarian and gluten-free offerings. The veggie chili is great. All profits go to their animal shelter.

Very good breakfast-brunch and great coffee. My only wish is that they would serve organic eggs, dairy, etc. I would gladly pay more not to have a bunch of hormones, antibiotics, pesticides, gmos and chemicals in my food when I eat out. The only options we have for clean food on the Main Line are Pain Quotidienne which is all organic, Jules Thin Crust and White Dog Cafe. Would be great to have more options...

Okay, I can most definitely get behind a cafe with a cause, and The Black Cat Cafe is doing amazing things for our feline friends. BCC is owned by PALS, an organization dedicated to saving cats from homelessness and euthanasia. It's a nice idea to be able to dine out and do something good at the same time. I'd been wanting to try this place for awhile because I'd heard such great things. I stopped by on a Saturday morning for breakfast with my sister and we immediately commented on how sweet and inviting the cafe was. We liked how each table was different -- the atmosphere lends a sort of comfy vibe, as if you're in someone else's home. The breakfast menu was straightforward and simple, which was cool with us. We didn't want anything too heavy 'cause it was summer for real, so we both opted for multi-grain breakfast sandwiches with over easy eggs, meat (Canadian bacon for her, well done bacon for me), and cheese (provolone, cheddar). I also ordered coffee, which was delicious and all really I could hope for in my morning joe. The breakfast sandwiches "did the job" but could have used some serious pizzazz. The multi-grain toast was fabulous bread but it was very dry. The eggs lacked salt or pepper but were cooked as requested. Bacon was on point and cheddar added a bit of extra oomph. Some butter and seasoning both would have been bright ideas. So would avocado and maybe some hot sauce, but I should have asked. Breakfast sandwiches are mostly foolproof and these were fine for the most part, but... They took about a half hour to come out to us. And we were for the most part okay with that, because our waitress (who was completely sweet, friendly, and cool) was totally upfront from the get-go and mentioned that there was only one cook in the kitchen. I seriously hope that another cook was coming as we were going, because the cafe was starting to get crowded! Overall, not a bad experience, but not on par with the experiences fellow Yelpers have been having. I'll definitely give it another chance (and write an updated review), not just because cats, but because I have a feeling I could have picked a better menu item to wait thirty minutes for. And praline french toast?! Double yum!

First time here and very impressed. Quiet and friendly place with a great cause! The praline French toast was over the top sweet though. Will definitely be back! Any place donating proceeds to protect our furry friends is on my list of regulars! #pals #catlove #petadoption

The Black Cat Cafe is an awesome concept. Proceeds from the meal and tips go to a cat rescue, which is a cause near and dear to our hearts. The food is quite good and reasonably priced. I believe I just got some eggs, home fries, and toast. All were adequate, and I would go back and get the same thing. Unfortunately, the service was painfully slow, and our server got pretty much all of our orders mixed up. It was fine because it all got fixed rather quickly, but, at a regular restaurant, it would have been unacceptable. So, don't go here for speedy service, but do go here if you like good food, helping animals, and friendly employees.

Enjoy a tasty meal and help save animals? I'm all for that! This restaurant is owned and operated by PALS (Pennsylvania Adoption and Lifecare Society) a cat rescue out of delaware county. All of the proceeds from Black Cat Cafe go right back into the rescue. In addition to breakfast and lunch you can also buy treats, toys, and accessories for your frisky feline - win! My mom and I just enjoyed a quick lunch. The service was not stellar, just a young student who sorely lacked experience, but for a casual lunch I was not going to complain. The food, however was outstanding! I enjoyed a caprese grilled cheese which was loaded with melted mozzarella, tomatoes, and spinach on toasted Le Bus bread. Yum! My mom had a chicken salad sandwich and a cup of the mushroom soup and also raved about it! The table next to us was really talking up the three bean vegan chili which I plan to try next time! The chef came out to check on us at the end of our meal - which is always a nice personal touch! I love the idea of a non-profit restaurant and I certainly hope it lasts - that part of Devon definitely could use some curb appeal!

How can I not like this place that has everything this world needs for a change! A great cause that has me tugging at my heart strings. There are days when one just want to do something real and this tops it. Everything from the decor to the service is a touching experience bar none. Imagine having volunteers want to help at a restaurant so that all of the proceeds can go to the cause for animals. I loved everything about this and I hope more people do. The food was good. It could maybe be a bit better and I could go into all of that but I'm not complaining. The cause is so worth it.

I've only been there once - though I've tried to go a few times. The food was a excellent rendition of standard breakfast fare. Their hours seem to be very inconsistent though. Call before you go.

Well I've still yet to eat at the Black Cat Cafe, but I did hear from one of it's managers because of my review (and a couple of cranks who decided I deserved passive aggressive "compliments"). This manager thanked me for bringing the problem to their attention, and was angry that this had occurred. As it was pointed out to me, when the cafe closes early it means that this organization takes in less money to help stray cats and dogs. The notes I received from the manager of the Black Cat Cafe gave me every reason to try this little cafe again and support their cause. Hopefully after eating here, I'll be able to add a few stars.

This place is super cute, for a great cause and a must stop! I made reservations for a Saturday morning as I was not sure how busy they get. There is not much parking and they kindly let me park in the driveway. When I arrived the server let me pick my seat as it was a holiday weekend and not too crowded. I believe the servers are volunteers as all the proceeds go to a local animal shelter. Our waitress was great and could not have been nicer. They have soups, salads, sandwiches, quiche and breakfast on the menu. I went with the lemon grass soup with peas and rice- very tasty and great flavors. The waitress was kind enough to let us try the soup before ordering. They change the soups daily and also had a tomato and veggie chili. My friend is a vegan and she had lots of options and went with the tofu scrambler with spinache. I got a bagel sandwich on an everything bagel with 2 fried eggs, choice of meat and cheese. I did not realize Canadian Bacon is ham and ordered that instead of bacon my fault but still very delicious. The prices are not bad and also a donation! After your meal you must stop in the gift shop to pick up some cat toys or dog treats!

What a weird place to eat. At first, it looks like a cute, upscale brunch place. But it turns out to be a charity thay benefits animals. The staff are all volunteers and obviously not fully into it as a job. There are only 10 tables, but you can count on a long wait for your food. The kitchen is tiny and it seems like the chef also runs the food out to the tables. The pricing is also odd, with small dishes like the breakfast sandwich ($6.50) being overpriced and the omlette ($8.50) underpriced. The place is clean and tastefully if sparsely furnished. The food itself is good but nothing to go out of your way for. The ingredients are fresh and tasty, especially the free range eggs. Coffee is first rate. The vegetarian bacon and sausage items are the same that you'd get at the grocery store. Bagels are small and bland. We've been here 3 times in 2 years and we only seem to come back when we forget what it was like the last time. I can't say there are any places in the area that are better, though. If you need someplace to eat then it won't be terrible here. Just moderate your expectations and don't come too hungry.

The people were so nice, the food was great, and the atmosphere was comfy. It had an afternoon tea kind of feel to the place. The rooms were well decorated and gave the place a very home like feel to it. It was a little pricey, but I also love that all proceeds go to their animal shelter! Then it feels good after the investment! I would recommend to anyone!

I wish I had known of the Black Cats Cafe history as a cat rescuer. My husband and I just stopped by the other day for a quick breakfast, Took awhile to get our menus and after ordering an egg sandwich with veggie sausage and an egg omelet which came in an half hour. I would never bother with the egg sandwich ,it was dry as a bone and the veggy sausage had absolutely no taste, even with the good deeds they do they need to perk up their offerings. I'll go back but next time try their French Toast which looked great and if that doesn't work they'll have to help the kitty's without my help. The place is pretty quirky though and very clean, the people are friendly and you are not rushed. Berkley Road is on a quiet road just down the street from the Marriott. Their coffee is terrific and the menu can be very eclectic. My suggestion would be for the volunteers to brush up on regular service and make this place a profitable one that will really do some good.for the cat rescue.

Our breakfast here was good, definitely better than average, but I'm giving 5 stars mainly because of the awesome fact that all proceeds go toward such a great cause. I applaud the owners for their generosity and I plan to stop in for a meal whenever I'm in the area to support their mission.

I went here for a quick breakfast with some relatives from out of town and it was great! I love that all of their profits go to animal rescue and the staff (who are all volunteers) were friendly and overall made it a great experience. We all enjoyed our food, my aunt said their coffee was great. I had the praline French toast which was unbelievably good. It was a big serving so the rest of my table helped me clean my plate. The only negative I found was that it took me living in Devon 6 months to try this place. I will definitely be back!

I orginally stopped in because I thought it was awesome that I could get lunch and have the proceeds go toward helping homeless animals. But the food has always been so good that now I have twice as much reason to keep going there. The brownies are insanely good... made with European dark chocolate, and served with homemade whipped cream. If you're in the mood for lunch, why not go somewhere that's local, really tasty, and helpful to animals?

My sister asked me to go to Black Cat Cafe this weekend. My family often went to tea at the tea room that occupied the building before Black Cat Cafe opened, so I was interested to see what replaced it. Black Cat Cafe is operated by a non-profit organization that supports pet rescue and is run by volunteers- and all meals are tax-free. We made reservations for 12:30 on a Saturday. During our meal, there were only about 4 tables occupied, and a few empty- it would be safe to stop in here on Saturdays without a reservation. The decor was cute and they had tons of pictures of cats and dogs around the cafe. We were seated right away, but weren't given menus and our table wasn't set. The couple next to us handed us their menus and said, "here- we don't need these anymore". (Their food came in the next 5-10 minutes, so I think the waitress forgot to pick the menus up from their table). The good surprise: they were serving breakfast, and they had some great vegetarian and vegan options as well. Eventually a waitress came by and asked us what drinks we wanted- we all ordered iced teas, which were really good. When she brought them a bit later, she forgot to give us straws or spoons- I had to ask. Eventually she took our food order. Then we waited. And waited. And waited. It took about an hour from the time we sat down until our food arrived. (Except for soup- one of the 3 of us ordered soup, and that came out about 20 minutes before the rest of our food). However, once the food came out, it was pretty tasty. We had to be somewhat aggressive to get things we needed- more iced tea, ketchup, etc. However, in the end, everything tasted good, and everything was quite cheap ($27 for 3 people). I'd come back again for the food, and if the service improved a bit, this would easily be a 5-star place. On the way out, we quickly browsed their shop area- they had some items you could buy to support the SPCA (t-shirts, mugs, keychains, etc.) and some yummy looking scones and brownies. Apparently when it is nicer out, they also have adoption days where they bring dogs and cats out to the site for you to spend time with before or after your meal (and consider adopting, of course!). Pros: supports a great non-profit, tax-free dining, cheap tasty food, cute cafe, not overly crowded, vegan/vegetarian options Cons: slow, spotty service

Where else can you get breakfast for $5 (2 eggs, toast, potatoes AND meat!!!) WOW And the atmosphere (english tea), decor, and servers/cooks are wonderful (volunteers - our server was a pharmacist for her day job!)... Food is great and can vary depending on the cook, as one time the potatoes had some amazing bits of roast peppers or sun dried tomatoes mixed in. But its always good and you can get gluten free and REAL maple syrup for the pancakes ! wow... very nice place, and its all for a good cause as well. as to the other reviewers calling it pricey, well, i dont know any place on the mainline cheaper, so id like to know what they are comparing it with. Only problem is that they are closed on mondays ! WONDERFUL place!!!

Looked for a brunch place near Wayne for 7 of us this sunday and didn't feel like waiting at Nudy's. Went to Yelp and saw the Black Cat Cafe and the reviews were so good, we gave it a try. We were really happy to find out that it was a non profit staffed by volunteers and donates all proceeds to a no-kill rescue center for cats. The interior is very tastefully decorated and the people were friendly. The food was delicious! My husband and I had the quiche with salad. My daughter and her friends had waffles and grilled caprese sandwich and eggs. Everyone shared the dessert which was probably the best - chocolate brownie with ice cream and chocolate sauce that the owner brought back from France. The brownies were made from chocolate that came from Germany. It was simply luscious. It was the obvious that a lot of TLC went into this place. The prices were also very reasonable. I would definitely go back!

All hail the Duchess of this place (me!) I love this quaint (feels like grandma's house in there) little cafe in the heart of Devon on the main line. I have been going here for the past year or so and I have been trying everything on the menu. This place automatically gets 5 stars for the cause it stands for, the sweet ladies who service you & the food that is actually quite good- for the cheap price that is hard to find on the main line. Yes: Breakfast. Omelettes are great. Soups- the veggie chili and deifnitely all of the salads except...... No: Caesar salad- quite possibly the worst thing on the menu. It was all white romaine & generic dressing with croutons. Boooooring (& gross.) Again, a STEAL for main line dining- eating to save the kitties. I will keep coming back here as long as they're in business!

Last Sunday, we had my mom's 90th birthday party at the Black Cat Cafe. It is such a unique place because it is run by all volunteers and the proceeds go to cat shelters. The luncheon was delicious and the ambiance was adorable. All our guest raved about the food, service and decor of the place. I want to thank Pat and the other volunteer staff for making this special occasion so memorable. Madeline Levy

Nestled in a group of homes off rt. 30 is this colorful, welcoming storefront that is the Black Cat Café, which opened early 2011. If you go on a Saturday, you might get lucky enough to meet a friendly, featured stray waiting to greet you with a wagging tail! After petting our new friend, we went into the café and were welcomed with a wonderful little store selling all sorts of pet-oriented items that opened up into two large eating areas. There's a little computer in the corner where you can search for a pet or fill out an application. The staff are some of the nicest I've met exploring the mainline town nestled off rt. 30. Don't waste your time going to retail chains when you can support your local merchants that are doing good for our homeless pet population. All proceeds in the café and store benefit local animal charities. Every room is decorated as if it were a welcoming B&B. tables are adorned with a frame of a homeless cat you can adopt. As far as food, the waitress told us that we can make anything to order besides what's on the menu. The menu (about two to three pages) has the standard lunch items you would find at any café and a menu of specialty sandwiches and dishes. The meals are diner prices in my opinion and not expensive. I had a wonderful mushroom soup, and my salad was falling off its plate delicious. My husband had a croissant turkey sandwich that was delicious as well. The details that stood out were how the waitress took care to make sure our order was straight. She also went to get length to take care of a couple with a child making a special order dessert of ice cream and fruit. You'll feel welcome and at home here. This quiet café is wonderful! Don't miss an opportunity to take your friends, family and colleagues to this special place that takes care to find homes for sickly and stray animals with its proceeds. They all seem to be volunteers who donate their time and efforts to run the café and find animals a good home. I will be back - best of luck to your business!

Was really disappointed during my last visit here. My main gripe is with the service. I understand that these folks are donating their time, but the last time I was there the service was awful! The food took a really long time, and when it did arrive, they forgot my companion's toast (he likes to make a sandwich out of his omelette). So we asked her for the toast, sadly, we had to ask several times because she kept forgetting us. Meanwhile our food was getting cold. I could hear other people complaining in the next room about how their orders are incomplete. I felt bad for the girl, she was really doing a lot of work and was having trouble juggling all the tables AND preparing bills AND working the register too. What made me kind of angry was that I could see a teenage boy just hanging around in the kitchen just standing there doing nothing the entire time we were there! He could have easily stepped in and assisted the girl! Not sure why he didn't. My companion has no desire to return to this place now, but I think its for a good cause and will try to convince him otherwise. On a positive note, my food was delicious.

Eating for a Cause It's pretty well established that I love to eat. I am also passionate about animal rescue. When I discovered a place that allows me to combine my love of food with a cause I support, you know I'm all in. I visited the Black Cat Café in Devon, PA last week. It's an easy to miss place located just off the Lincoln highway, but right near the Whole Foods, just in case you need a landmark. I felt like I was walking into a friend's quaintly decorated kitchen. The space is very bright and open, every table had a table cloth, there was art hanging on the walls. It is a very warm and welcoming space. I ordered the smoked turkey with Irish cheddar panini. The turkey was off the bone, the herbs in the herb mayonnaise were picked and chopped right after I ordered and the cheese was melted to perfection, I hardly missed the caramelized onions, which the server let me know they were out of when I ordered. The portion was generous, and included a lovely side of grapes and vegetable crispy fries, which were a lovely alternative to potato chips. I also ordered sweet green tea, which may or may not have been home made, but it was a perfect accompaniment to my meal. The café serves salads and tea sandwiches as well and I think they are reasonably priced considering the full portions and quality ingredients. My whole lunch came to less than $10, which is a steal compared to what I can spend on the hot bar across the street. The other, most important reason for giving the Black Cat Café a try is that all proceeds go to PALS animal rescue ( palspets.org ). And since I am a die hard animal rescue supporter, I think it's worth supporting this restaurant - the fact that the food is good is a plus in my book. Unlike my usual lunch forays, I did not try any deserts as I had to get back to the office. I don't have call to be in Devon on weekends, so I have not tried their weekend offerings, but if you're looking for brunch and perhaps to adopt a pet, you might try stopping by on Saturday when they offer adoption clinics. The Black Cat Café is perfect for a girl's day out lunch or if there is a new animal-loving sweetie in your life, what better way to say "I care"? The Black Cat Café is open Tuesday through Saturday from 8:00 to 3:00. They accept credit cards and they are always looking for volunteers. Because your lunch will be such a deal, consider picking up a t-shirt too. This will become one of my regular lunch haunts.

Ate brunch here today and it was delicious! If you are a vegan or veggie head there are some good selections - like Vegan French Toast. Prices are great - 5 of us ate for under $50. Please keep in mind this is volunteer staffed and run and all proceeds go to support the PALS cat rescue. Had a great time with friends - had good food - and supported a good cause. Highly recommend!

Any place that donates their profits to animals is awesome in my book. The fact that they have awesome food is a great plus :) Everyone who mentioned that it is a small place that feels like you're eating in someone's kitchen is correct - it's cute though! I highly recommend the grilled cheeses and the tropical iced tea. I definitely plan on going back (and recommending them to all my animal-loving friends and family!).
