I have heard very good things about this establishment for years, so since my sister goes to Ursinus and specks is right around the corner from them we decided to go and try for ourselves. The chicken is broasted, which i hear is chicken fried under pressure. I thought the chicken pieces were a little small, but it was good none the less. The sides were pretty huge cole slaw and mashed potatoes. They were very filling, I have to say that it is nice to have a old school chicken joint like this but I did not really find anything really different from kfc or popeyes, its nice if you live around there but I wouldn't say drive up to collegeville just try it.

The "broasted" (i.e., fried under pressure) chicken is very good. The sides are good enough. And, the decor is classic. But, the place has a pungent odor. I think it's the oil... I don't know if it's a side effect of the "broasting" machine, or what (the chicken doesn't taste like it's been fried in old/bad oil), but it makes it kind of unpleasant to be in there. If you want to try it, I would plan on taking the food to go. Speck's people, if y'all could clean the place, invest in some air fresheners, or whatever it is that you need to do to keep that smell at bay, I can guarantee that you'd have more dine-in business.

I go here every other month while working in the area and they always do a great job preparing tasty food! I highly recommend their chicken!

I was embarrassed to park my car at Specks, so I parked next door at Adult World (Creepy Porn Store!) and walked over to Speckie's. Some negative reviews on Speck's mention the old school interior. I say neigh-neigh. Yeah Specks looks its from the 70's but its clean. There's a charm to Speck's, the seats and windows give a nice open feeling. I got the 4pc chicken and it was just right, not too greasy not too crispy. Speck's does more than chicken, as they have other items burgers, dogs, nuggets, etc. I just had the chicken, but maybe in the future I'll go down other roads. The price is fair, and you'll get your fill. Speck's been around forever, and even when China takes over this county I'm pretty sure Speck's will survive.

Speck's is what you expect from the outside. The decor is not anything fancy. But the chicken is amazing. I just visited last night for the first time after the urgings of several friends. The broasted chicken was juicy and tasty. Unhealthy but nothing wrong with a little indulgence. I was not impressed with the macaroni and cheese and will avoid on my next visit. I did give my thumbs up to the macaroni salad.

The chicken was great, and it's worth the trip for this alone. The onion rings were superb too. My mac n cheese however, was served almost cold. (I assume this is not the norm here and I attribute it to a bad day.) The french fries were rather limp and the cheese sauce was ok. Good cole slaw. What they could definitely improve upon is the crispness of the fries and checking that the hot sides are served hot. The workers all looked very young on this particular day, which was a Sunday.

The fried chicken is a guilty pleasure, and perfect for holidays and get togethers.

I have been going to speck's with my family since I was a little girl. I love how throughout the years its kept its retro style tables and counter, but don't let this old school style scare youa way because the chicken is out of this world. It is important to note that although it is called "Speck's DriveIn" the drive in part is no longer operating. So you have to actually enter the buliding. Speck's chicken is BROASTED which means it is the juiciest you can get. For those of you who don't know the difference between "fried chicken" and "broasted chicken" here it is: Broasted Chicken is made in a special machine that is a pressure cooker deep fryer - frying the food under great pressure. Regular fried chicken is either put in a wire basket and sunk into a vat of hot oil or put in a frying pan with a layer of oil in it It's cheap, never too crowded. You walk right in, place your order(they hand you a number ticket) and you sit down at either the tables or counter and wait for your number to be called. I personally love that they have red birch beer on tap and their milkshakes are really creamy. Aside from the chicken they have burgers that arent really anythign special, homemade soups, crinkle cut fries, mashed potatoes, and many other sides. My favorite of all the sides is the COLESLAW. Now i usually cringe at the thoguht of eating cole slaw but theirs is thee best. Its homemade! and its important to note its a sweeter slaw, so for those of you who aren't fans of a sweeter slaw you may want to pass

I've been coming to Speck's since I was a kid. Not much has changed in the way of the decor or the cuisine. This place serves the best chicken in the world, hands down. It's "broasted", which I assume is a cross between broiled and roasted. However it's made, it's amazing. Juicy, but never greasy. Speck's also is home to my favorite coleslaw. I don't know if it's made in-house or they buy it from a vendor, but the slaw is the perfect side for the chicken; cool and creamy, with a hint of pepper. Like french fries? The ones at Speck's are crinkle cut and fried to perfection. Get a meal, and you'll get a little dinner roll, with a pat of butter, and a wet-nap. Oh, and for the ultimate experience, be sure to get a packet of honey and drizzle the honey on your chicken. SO GOOD! I think Speck's has burgers, and other items, but even though I've been eating here for decades, I always get the chicken. You should too.

I went with no prior knowledge nor expectations. I left confused. What the heck? Small, greasy chicken pieces with unfriendly counter service. Nice. I gave it a second try a couple weeks later. Again I got abrupt service while giving my order...so sorry that I had a question (eyes rolling and a sigh). I ordered a 2 piece meal with mashers on the side. I knew I was in trouble when I saw a woman carrying a huge bag of white matter over to the counter and asked how much water to add for the mashed potatoes. Please spare me. I realize that most joints serve instant...but I don't want to see and hear the ugly details! I also got mac'n cheese. Who knew it was really mac'n cheese SOUP! Very bland and runny. Just because a place has been around for a long time doesn't guarantee quality.

Food is pretty good and price is pretty average. The chicken they offer puts any of the big chain chicken places to shame. When dining-in I was kind of scared. I understand the interior is supposed to be retro, but it comes off as being dirty and crusty. If you can get over the appearance this place is fine place to visit. They have a large menu and offer lots of different options other than their signature broasted chicken.

  • Bill R.

Still looks like the 70's in Specks. The food is well priced. Great fried chicken. Small shrimp in the dinner but you get a dozen. Real onion rings. Mac and cheese is not homemade.

  • Mary A.

We stopped there one day and hub ordered a chicken meal complete with mashed potatoes and gravy. He has been back there since and loves it, me, well, I would rather make my own chicken and mashed potatoes with gravy.

Health warning... fried food is bad for you. On a rare occasion, I step outside the box and have some fried chicken from Speck's. It is by far the best fried chicken I have ever had. This place is ten finger licking great food.

    (3.5) ~ Good overall food & service OUR MENU: * 8-Piece Chicken Dinner = (3.5) good * Potato Salad = (3.5) good * Bread Rolls = (3.5) good

  • Gone B.

Best fried chicken in the area! Much better than KFC but If you come between 2-4 the chicken doesn't taste as great so 4 stars.

    (4)
  • Banananna C.

The chicken is delicious! The sides are sub-par. Macaroni and cheese tastes like the canned chef boyrdee (spelling?), mashed potatoes and gravy are instant, and fries are boring with nothing special about them. Corn nuggets were pretty good..although an interesting concept - think fried creamed corn. Employees are nice and helpful with recommendations and indecisive people like myself. It's quick and easy and good for the money.

Great if you have a bunch of people to feed or just need a quick dinner option. Chicken is great. Sides are OK otherwise it would get a higher overall rating.

I wish I could give a 3 and a half. Amazing service, underrated burgers, overrated fried chicken. Very comfortable, old time diner feeling and atmosphere. Nothing complicated or over the top, just good food and loyal customers.

  • Ginny P.

I have never had anything but great food and service here, and I have been coming here for a looooong time. I suggest ordering a hot dog with mustard and onions. Hot dogs come on a great rectangular roll, hot dog cut longways, and sizzled on the grill. I order my fries well done so they are dark and crispy. Order a small hoagie, and it is awesome on a round roll, just enough to fill you up. I love the chicken...and I don't know anyone who doesn't. Cole slaw available by the quart. I pick it up before I head to a picnic. Everyone raves about it. And the staff is awesome.

    (5)
  • Brittany T.

Food is good the main reason for only giving two stars though is because of their sanitary practices. I watched the gentlemen pick the fries up with his bare hands and put them on the tray, and well as putting the cheese on the cheesesteaks with no gloves.

  • Gail N.

I give specks 5 stars! Fresh crisp crunchy hot reasonable 8 piece dinner or you can just order pieces of chicken. Fast service friendly people you gotta try it and when you do you will keep coming back

  • Dori H.

Listen, this is going to be short. You're going to Speck's for one reason and one reason only: CHICKEN. No, their sides aren't great. Yes, the building is a little old. But C'MON Y'ALL. You're here for chicken (and maybe Adult World after). And their chicken is REALLY REALLY FREAKING GOOD.

    (5)
  • Jenn Q.

Everything is delicious. Reasonably priced and very fresh chicken. Cole slaw and French fries are excellent.

  • Rob T.

Waaaaaaaay over rated. The mac and cheese was watery tasteless!! The chicken was dry and they didnt have any biscuits. The only cool thing about this spot is the look of the outside. It looks like a hotspot. But it seems like it was only good for the ppl who leave the porn shop with an appetite.

    (1)
  • Terry W.

Great local place that has the feel of times past. The sides can't be beat but if you want authentic fried chicken this is the place!

    (4)
  • Luke S.

When we lived twenty minutes away my family still drove to Speck's. 20 years later I am lucky enough to live in town and enjoy Speck's often as I can overlook the horrendous effect on my health. The sides are stellar! Mac and cheese, mashed potatoes, coleslaw, and their bread is a throwback white (remember white bread?) Bonus points for the funky 70s decor and nearby porn.

    (4)
  • Katherine J.

This place has great, moist "boasted" (lightly fried) chicken and sides (try the mac and cheese) but the prices are really high. It's kind of cool that they've kept it the way it was decorated in the 50's.

    (3)
  • Jeff T.

I've been going to Speck's for 40 years. I can honestly say that it hasn't changed much, both with the food and the décor. This place opened in the early 50's and hasn't changed. That's one of the neat things about this place. It's not a place that is made to look retro - it IS retro. This also means that the seats, counters, stools, and menu are also from a simpler time. So don't expect big padded benches. Formica was the thing then and is at Speck's. Yes they have sandwiches, hamburgers and hot dogs but this is a fried chicken place or should I say Broasted Chicken. So I suggest you stick with the Chicken. You might be wondering what is Broasted Chicken? I would describe it as a lightly coated chicken that is cooked in a pressure cooker. It has crispy skin without the grease of the fried chicken. The chicken is cooked in batches and then put in a tray under heat light - but don't worry it doesn't stay there very long. If you're eating in you'll most likely want to try the dinner. Pick the piece or pieces of chicken that you want, the side (Get the coleslaw it's great, sweat) and it comes with a roll. It also use to come with honey to put on your roll but I think they ended that. That's a shame I really liked that. For the most part I just get a box of chicken and bring it home for the family. My suggestion, get more than you think you will need. It's ok if you don't eat it all, just put it in the frig and have it the next day. It keeps real good. Let's be honest, this place is a precursor to the mega fast food giants that begun in the 50's so don't expect high end service. You're going to walk up to the cash register, tell the person what you want, pay for it, take the number they give you, and wait for your number to be called. It only takes a minute or two. But this is also the kind of place that you go to for your first job in life. I think you get the idea. But that's ok, it's part of the experience. So take a reality break, chill out, have a simple chicken dinner and roll the hands of time back.

  • Marc S.

Chicken sandwich was terrible. Mac & cheese wasn't great. Cole slaw was ok. Chicken nuggets taste like prefab nuggets. I assume we just got the wrong stuff. Maybe we'll just get a bucket next time.

  • Mike L.

Yes, it's run-down looking and located next to an "adult" store, but plain and simple this place is the best. I always go with a simple broasted chicken and fries meal. This place is a real throwback to no frills dining. You can rest assured that you're not paying for any extra perks here....just a trip to flavor country. Long live Speck's! The lot can be accessed from either Ridge Pike or Germantown Pike, as the location is essentially right where the two roads meet

really good chicken, burger, and fries. Im in love with specks lol. and afforable price. nobody can beat their food for this price. TRY!!!

  • Amanda H.

Delicious. The mac n cheese is so creamy and the chicken is moist and flavorful, much much much better then KFC. The staff was very nice when I went in, and I got take out, but I can't wait to eat here, I love the old 60's feel to the place. The location is not the best, but since its been there so long, I'm sure it was different when they first started.

Good broasted chicken. Mac & cheese was not that great but pretty good.

    (3)
  • Danan R.

Amazing broasted chicken. It is well-seasoned and perfectly juicy. KFC and Popeyes, eat your hearts out. Get a breast meal with fries and coleslaw or mac and cheese. It is delicious and satisfying, I promise. Plus, it is pretty inexpensive.

  • Percy N.

A throw-back to the old days drive-in type food (but without the drive in). They specialize in "broasted" (fried under pressure) chicken but have hamburgers, hot dogs, cheesesteaks, etc. Hits the spot when you want some greasy food.

    (4)
  • Andrea m g.

We drove past this slightly shady looking joint several times before deciding to find out what broasted chicken is .Be forwarned there is a porn shop caddy corner to this rather dismal looking building. Decor is early 1970's but seemed clean? What Specks has going for it is awesome, fried chicken, the method of cooking it is the same as KFC,pressure cooker fried. We had massive sides of super creamy, macaroni and cheese. The chicken was moist, seasoned well and really reasonably priced. It is somewhere to try, but I wouldn't feel comfortable going in there by myself considering the surrounding area. So the break down, fried chicken and sides would have been a 4 Location, lighting, decor, variety would be a 2. So because of the above I give Specks a solid 3 star rating

    (3)
  • John B.

Quality. Chicken excellent, sides and kids meals not so much. They make the best cheesesteaks in town.

Finally got a chance to try Speck's Drive In! I was very pleased! The chicken was tender and juicy. It might have been a bit small...I've seen bigger breasts in my time, but it was quite tasty and came with fries, a roll, and a side for under 7 bucks...I got the mac and cheese on the side which was creamy and delicious... The food was served almost immediately, meaning it was sitting under a hot light somewhere...but it was still warm and juicy when I got back to the office 10 minutes later...the fries were pretty good too, crinkle fries as others have noted. They include a little baggie with a fork, wet nap, salt, and ketchup with your order...I always appreciate a wet nap after a meal! I like the decour...it seems almost stuck in time...it did NOT seem dirty to me as others have mentioned...could probably use a little makeover, but i wasn't worried about the cleanliness. They do have shakes, but they aren't what I'd call milkshakes...it certainly won't bring the boys to the yard....milkshakes are hand dipped iced cream and milk...Speck's has a shake machine that seems to have vanilla soft serve and the ability to add 11 flavors to it...I got the chocolate, and it was passable, but not what i drool over when I think Milkshake...and nothing I'd miss when I go back... Overall a very tasty lunch...I'll have more chicken and skip the shake next time!

I have eaten here my whole life, but the last couple of months, this place has gone down hill. Chicken is over cooked and not flavorful. Mashed potatoes are def instant, like paste. Beans are from a can. Every time they forget to put something in the bag for us, like a side or honey for the rolls. They don't even put napkins in the to-go bags anymore. I keep wanting to give this place a second chance , but I am let down every time. We will not be going back anytime soon. Such a shame!

  • David R.

It's a rip off two people 20.00 for littles pcs of chicken with hardly no meat , mac cheese was bad , was still hungry after that mess!!

  • Androcles R.

Classic. Driven by here since I was a kid. Finally went in. Chicken was juicy and crispy. Delicious. It's a dirty place, but kind of a cool step back in time. I'll go back when I'm craving fried chicken. I know I know it's not fried! Whatever.

    (3)
  • Leslie K.

First visit to Specks, it was good and fast. The staff was mostly pleasant but seemed to be a bit of bickering happening between some of them. I was happy to try it out but can't say we'll be back anytime soon (because it's fried food and we try not to do too much eating out). :)

  • Marlene W.

Haaaa, my first job as a teenager was at Speck's. I lasted three months and couldn't eat chicken for about three years after working there. Don't get me wrong the food is really tasty. I just got tired of eating it, looking at it, smelling it, touching it, etc... Speck's is well known for their broasted chicken. I always get a breast dinner with fries, coleslaw and a roll. Then I wash it down with a "Black and White" shake because they don't have a lot of desserts to choose from. This place is a no-frills fast food joint. The atmosphere is down right depressing, but you will leave with a smile on your greasy face. PS I think they still do breakfast?

    (4)
  • Lindsey G.

My husband and I have lived in the area for about 3 years and I drive by Speck's twice a day but for some reason we never tried it until now. The chicken was moist, the potato salad was the closest I've had to my Nana's ever, and the fries are delish (plus they have black and white milkshakes which we haven't tried yet but just knowing that they have them is awesome). Everyone behind the counter is very friendly and even though the decor is a little older (I think it adds to the charm of the place) everything is kept very clean.

    (5)
  • SH H.

Went there again on a pure takeout basis. Twelve pieces plus a large side of mac n cheese = $25. I think maybe they are using cornish game hens instead of chicken, because these are some of the smallest damn chicken pieces I've ever seen. It just might be worth the trip down to Norristown to the establishments down there.

Can't say enough about great this place is! The chicken is so great, it makes places like KFC pale in comparison. A cool retro feel takes you back in time. The only other place I have had Broasted chicken this good was Plain And Fancy Restaurant in Lancaster County. You can't miss and won't be disappoint here!

    (5)
  • S T.

Moist, crispy, flavorful chicken. We did not get any sides based on others' reviews. Place was clean but definately retro. Wait was long. Seem to be in need of a manager to direct staff and improve efficiency.

  • Carolyn A.

Specks is the best example I know of good home town food that is a few steps above fast food, but still tasty, convenient, and reasonably priced. Their broasted chicken has spoiled me; this is the standard I set for fried chicken, and few come close. Their hamburgers taste the way they did over thirty years ago; good!. I remember this when it was the Big Pixie, a car hop place, over 40 years ago. When Specks bought it, they improved it. This was Specks second place; the main one was in Limerick. That one has been sold, but fortunately this one is still here and still cranking out good American food. When I was a kid, my parents didn't think McDonalds was good for us, but they brought us here often. I have smart parents.

I'm so glad that I found reviews here for Specks! I have driven past it many times, but had no idea what to expect. It's a very cute old fashioned place with great chicken. I'm so excited to have found a great place close by, and look forward to many more visits! YUM.

I've been reading about this place for awhile. Speck's hasnt got a review for 2 years so it's due... Really nice even though the location sucks! right next to an adult video store. I had a cheeseburger,(i dont know if i will ever get used to a burger without all the fixins), my wife, the fried chicken breast dinner with potato salad and fries, and my girls got the nuggets with macncheese. Top it off with a good ol bw shake. Great little taste of heaven after a day at the Y pool. If you are up this way stop in and get some yummy fried goodness. It was all delicious even if it wasnt as fast as the shirt says....

In Collegeville, where restaurants go to die, Speck's has been around for almost 30 years. Just go there and you'll be happy!

  • Dave H.

Well, well well....where should I start. I grew up eating Speck's chicken. Speck's Chicken is one of the reason I weigh over 300lbs. This chicken puts, KFC, Roy Rogers to shame. It's crispy tasty skin, the moist meat, normally i get the fries with it and cole slaw. I'm not a cole slaw fan but my grandmom loves it. The burgers are incredible too, they come on little dinner rolls, god they are soooo good. I'm salivated just thinking about them. I never had anything else, I mean what else is there other then burgers and chicken. The atmosphere has been the same since I was little....wait...since i was younger, i don't think I've ever been little. Even driving by the place is torture. This place is definately one of the good old places!!
