Second time at Au Gratin Bistro. Service was much better than the first time. Food was very good both times. The first time I enjoyed the clam pizza. Today we had between us mushroom soup, onion soup (probably the best in town), the rib eye and the chicken francaise. The entrees didn't completely reflect the menu but the kitchen had already been cleaned up practically by the time we got there so I am not going to fault that. The rib eye was the stand out dish. Great deal, great flavor and cooked to order. The chicken was wonderful quality but I probably won't order it again. My husband thought the steak was one of the best dishes he had eaten out this month. We will definitely be back now that they have seemed to work out there service issues from the original opening. Prices were incredibly reasonable for what you were getting also.

We were in Carlisle for a car show and stopped downtown for dinner. Stumbled across this nice little Bistro as we were heading toward a nearby restaurant we had found on Yekp. We took s chance and I'm glad we did. The Angus Burgundy center cut steak was great. My son ate the Three Cheese Macoroni and loved it and my wife was happy with the Grilled Shrimp Salad.

We had a group dining together so we had a range of opinions. Most were in the "pretty good" range with only one "excellent". The highest rated were the salmon and the steak. The polenta and Brussel sprouts were quite good but the meat could have been better. A quirk we encountered was that every meal came with a choice of salad or vegetable du jour. Those who ordered a salad got it. But no one who ordered the vegetable du jour received it. Without that issue I could have given it four stars. The fact that it is BYOB does make the overall cost of the meal reasonable for those who like to have a glass or two with dinner as we do.

I gave it a second chance... Both times I went with a friend and both times our meal was totally messed up. The service was MUCH better the other day but the food quality was very lacking. I ordered a grilled chicken sandwich with eggplant, artichoke... the chicken was terrible. It was one those small frozen chicken breasts that must have been heated in a microwave - it did not taste very good and it was totally pale white in color : ( It was funny that the three tables around me were all people I know - not one of us loved our meal. Which is sad.

I decided to check in on Au Gratin to see if anything had changed with the service so I took a business colleague to lunch. I must say that the change in the front of the house was amazing!! The service was spot-on...attentive, polite, eager to please, learning my name (amazing for Carlisle) and responsive. Still a little slow in the kitchen, but the food was outstanding as usual. Lunch was so good that I brought my girlfriend for dinner later that evening. I found the front of the house had a completely different culture for dinner service. Not the same manager and wait staff...very disorganized (ran out of menus?) and several sodas had run out. The wait staff made us feel rushed with chaos. The food was AWESOME, but it took a LONG time to come out of the kitchen. I counted only 3 other tables occupied so I'm not sure what was taking so long. And what was the wait staff of 2 doing back there? I hardly saw them at all. Lunch was 5 stars, dinner was 3 stars (1 star if the food wasn't so darn good).

Arrived at 6:15 for quick dinner before 7:30 movie. Two other tables occupied. Waited a few minutes with no host in sight. Personable waiter seated us and gave us menus and water, did not ask us for beverage order (ever.) we ordered hummus plate, one French onion soup, and two salads. Fifteen minutes later, waiter told us they had no hummus, we could choose something else on the house. Ten minutes later he brought a cup of tepid onion soup. By 6:45, after the soup, our replacement appetizer (ham croquettes) arrived, which looked lovely, had a tangy sauce , but were primarily lumpy potatoes and no ham flavor at all. By 7, I asked another waiter whether our salads were on the way. Our waiter came over and explained that the kitchen had forgotten to turn on the grill for the shrimp (for the salad) hence the delay. Salads arrived, nice fresh greens but the dressing for the beet salad was overly sweet and viscous, hard to believe it was house made. Waiter gave us an additional %10 off the bill but we would have preferred better food and service.

I went back for lunch and was sorely disappointed. The onion soup was very salty as well as the sandwich. I tried my friends clam pizza and it was good, actually. The broth of the mussels was very salty. I suspect the kitchen has a problem with salt. The water which came out had a very odd taste even with the lemon. To be fair they did give all of us free drinks. All in all it was not a pleasant experience for the price of a $9+ lunch.
