A few weeks ago, I happened to be in the Athens area and was directed to the Mad Hatter's by another nice local natural foods market called Earth 911. When we walked in we were greeted warmly by the owners. I love to support small local businesses so it was a treat to be served by Terry who is very friendly. We were pleasantly surprised to learn that she had vegetarian options as well as gluten free options. I ordered the "grown up grilled cheese" , and my dining partner ordered the avocado, lettuce, and tomato. The sandwiches were tasty and were cooked panini style ala a foreman grill. Though the sandwiches were simple in concept, you could tell that the ingredients were fresh and of excellent quality. The owner strives to support other local businesses by sourcing as local and organic as much as possible which I really respect. She offered us a free sample of her gluten free brownies which were totally yummy and moist. The jasmine iced tea was so good I asked where I could buy it. Unfortunately they don't sell it there yet but would have bought some if they did. Flash forward to today, we stopped in for dessert. Terry told us that she has found an extremely talented 17 year old gluten free baker to fill her goody case. With so many delicious options I had a hard time deciding. I settled on the eclair which was gluten free, soy free, dairy free, and delicious! I ordered a chai latte which complemented my dessert well. I would sum up my experience with the words: down to earth, homey, healthy, fresh, high quality, tasty, warm, good vibes, awesome food, and great people. It's a small place with a lot of heart and soul! We will be back whenever we are in town!

I just stopped in for coffee, so I can't vouch for the food, but it is a sweet place that fills an important niche in the community. Very friendly.

Friendly, tasty. It is next to the Citizen's Bank on Main Street, not where the GPS says it is. She steeped the tea, made all the food from scratch. Special orders is what she is used to. And a gluten free backrest case from a local baker.

I came to the Mad Hatter today with my husband for lunch, we walked in and were greeted warmly by the owner and the other girl at the counter. Their menu was written on the chalkboard behind the counter, there were a few parts of it that were difficult to read but it had all the info there, hubby got a BLT on sour dough and I got the grown up grilled cheese on 5 grain bread, yum-o! 3 types of cheese and super delicious. The cool part was you got apple slices and carrots with your sandwich, however had we known that beforehand I wouldn't have gotten carrots but hubby and I traded so it worked out. While we waited about 10 minutes for our food I browsed the co-op area were there was a selection of local artisans wares for sale. Very neat! Such things as homemade soaps, local honey, scarves and music and lots more. Terry, the owner, was very proud of her restaurant, she was very excited to show us her gluten free bakery items made by a local, licensed 17 year old baker, she let us know the gluten free breads are made fresh and she has a new freezer coming to accomodate more stuff. Nothing is processed and you can see there is a lot of love put into the cafe. We will be returning!
