Okay is been a while, but I'm now hooked. The staff here is great and knows who we are every time we come here. It's not always about the food, it's about a combination of both service and food. Great local Mexican joint.

The service is amazing at Ixtapa. All the staff is super friendly and the food comes out so quickly. The No-Name Burrito is the best.

Ordered two chicken tacos expecting it to be authentic instead we got hard shell. WHAT ARE THOOOOOOOOSE?!?!

Hate this place. The food is terrible. I haven't been in quite a number of years though, so maybe I'll go again & update this review to be more current.

Great food! Great service! I will be here A LOT!! This is easily some of the best Mexican food in Portland. The endless chips and Salsa are a plus as well.

Great friendly service and Yummy meals!! Easily affordable and the staff knows who we are and are fast, dependable and consistent! We love Ixtapa!!!!

The food tasted like it came right out of a can. The salsa was made with tomato sauce. My enchilada tasted like spaghettios. The shrimp tasted frozen and hard. I wish I could say the beans and rice were good but they weren't. I don't usually give bad reviews but I feel like you should be warned.

Hot chips, tasty salsa, great beer selection, wonderful staff, hot yummy food. I've never had anything but a great experience here. 5 stars all the way! Tonight I had the taco salad and it was wonderful! If you have not ate here please give it a try, you will be happy and full when you leave.

The food is good, as is the service. Portions are a good size for the price, and the chips and salsa keep coming!

Great Mexican food is VERY hard to find in Portland. Ixtapa is my benchmark as far as authenticity is concerned. I should know, I am a Mexican American who's played music in my share of GREAT Mexican restaraunt. The place is spotless well lit, and the decor simple yet typical. The staff is AMAZING at remembering names, faces, and favorite dishes. Now, we don't get to go as often as we'd like because it's a bit of a drive for us but when we crave GREAT Mexican food, we make the sacrifice. It's that good. I always get their steak and eggs or huevos rancheros with roasted jalapeños on the side and coffee. They ALWAYS remember that. And if you're feeling brave, order a mixed drink like my favorite the top shelf cadillac margarita. They will make sure you leave E-smiling! ¡Bravo paisanos, eso es todo!

Good food, good price, and good staff! Sometimes I just want a basic taco/enchilada/bean/rice combo plate with a margarita and Ixtapa has that and more! Loved the nachos, too!

Standard (American) Mexican restaurant. Huge portions, decent prices, friendly staff. We've never left unhappy (or hungry).

Absolutely love this place - great mexican food, excellent atmosphere and lovely wait staff.

The food is good. Not hands down amazing best ever good, but it is good. The reason this restaurant gets five stars is that they remember my family every time we come. The entire waitstaff knows my parents' order. We aren't here very often, because my parents live out of town (and so do I it's an hour drive for me), but Ixtapa is one stop they usually make when they are in town and I am happy to join them. I generally split something with someone because the portion size is huge. My kids can pretty much all split one dish... which makes dining out pretty affordable really! Anyways, the food is good, the customer service is great and the combination of those two things makes Ixtapa a regular stop for my family when we are all in the area.

  • Marna G.

Yum!!! This is one of our local staples, the wait staff is great, the food A-ok! We like going there before we walk over to the movies.

Great local restaurant! Serve is excellent. Food is constantly good. Mexican food, not unlike any other ethnic food, varies greatly, as does so called American food. Don't get me started on all the different Pad Thai I've tasted. This is good, always hot and tasty with excellent service, their success is well deserved.

It's not the best Mexican (or Americanized Mexican) I've had, but it's also not the worst. I know people that just love Ixtapa, but I don't agree. It's clean and the service is pretty decent. But after two visits, the food (for me) is not great. However, I am happy they have success in Scappoose and wish them all the best.

Great Mexican/American food! Restaurant is always clean, does not feel small town as sometimes the decor in small town restaurant can be 'worn in'. Big city in decor, service and food quality. Our service was over the top great, food came out in minutes and was piping hot and oh so tasty. You will not be disappointed! And you get so much for your money.

  • Becky L.

The staff is efficient and friendly and the food is great! I've enjoyed every dish I've tried. The fajitas are large enough so that there are always leftovers for lunch. Our favorite waiter is Guillermo, although everyone is awesome.

A cursory glance at the other reviews for this place revealed half-hearted, tepid little endorsements like: "Probably the best restaurant in Scappoose." Wrong-o! This isn't even the best Mexi-joint in Scappoose---- that distinction clearly belongs to Burrito USA---formerly Super Burrito Express. USA's wares are consistently cheaper, bigger, and more quickly delivered. It's true, Ixtapa is far preferable for the dine -in experience; Burrito USA wasn't built with consideration for a cozy, leisurely, lasting dine-in experience. It's eat and run, or better yet, carry out ("para llevar") all the way. Ixtapa has a full-service bar, and so it becomes a little easier to understand why there may be a built in home-town bias for this place. What can I say? I like some Mexican beer (especially Dos XX amber), and I like various mixed drinks, but the super-big-gulp slurpee-fied version most middle Americans take for a margarita? I'll pass? My innards wither and die a little, whenever I think of all that unwarranted sweetness. El Yuck-o!

Best salsa I've had in Oregon - which, if you've lived in Austin, Texas, as I have, perhaps that's not saying a lot in the grand scope of all salsa - and best spinach enchiladas I've had *ever* - the green salsa on such was as good as anything I ever had in Austin, and that IS saying a lot. Oregon's Mexican food scene is sad, given the number of Mexicans here, but this is a very decent place. Also, they are SUPER friendly. Will definitely stop here again. Lunch specials last until 3 and were all under $8.

I ate dinner at "Ixtapa Mexican Restaurant" in Scappoose, OR on 8/16/2012. It was my first time there. My friend Russ (who lives in nearby Warren, OR) had the chile relleno (by itself) for $7.25 while I had the camarones a la diabla for $13.25. They were both very good. We also had good service. The inside of the restaurant (murals, etc.) actually did remind me of the real Ixtapa (where I had been in February this year).

I guess I would have given this restaurant a 2.5 if possible, but I'll give it a 3. I used to live in this area and of all the places to eat in the st helens/scappoose area (if you're too lazy to drive to portland...which I usually was) this place is better than most, BUT in the end it's just another high-end taco bell. It's not really mexican food, but hey, it tastes good and the people are friendly so I guess it all evens out.

One refill of each beverage = bad. Food = standard Mexican food, but slightly better. I've always enjoyed eating here since it opened, but this was the first time I experienced the one refill policy (either due to it being a new policy or not having asked for two refills before). Twenty years ago, this would have been just fine, but in the era of bring your extra stomach to hold all the pop we're willing to give you, it isn't. Sure, it will cost them another 3 cents to refill your drink (that's a wild guess - something I've always believed, but not based in any fact), but isn't it worth it to make your customers happy . . . wait, that's three cents? Oh, never mind. I totally understand. Honestly, I shouldn't care. Even with having to pay for my second refill, the bill is around 30% lower than it would be in Portland. It's the principle, I'm sure. Not to start a Pepsi vs. Coke war, but Rainier S., are you freaking kidding me? Yes, Mexican restaurants seem to serve Pepsi, but I'll take the better option (Coke) wherever I can get it. Honestly, as long as it isn't RC, I am perfectly happy. There is something magical about the cheese they use here and I've even asked the owner of an 8 mile away competitor if she had any idea why it was so magical. She said they had the same supplier and has no idea why it would taste different. I've searched high and low for years for an answer to what type of cheese they use that makes it so wonderful and have yet to find the answer. Hmmm . . . I've never tried actually asking someone that works there. That's so crazy, it just might work! The food averages out to just above average though, even with the magical cheese. It's hard to get to outstanding when I've yet to find a Mexican restaurant that doesn't seem like it was just thrown in a microwave. Oh, the service is pretty good here. Just in case you care. I'll be back. Not because it's wonderful, but because it's not too bad. And if you're in Scappoose, what more could you ask for?

Probably the best restaurant in Scappoose. Excellent Americanized Mexican food. Lunch specials less than $7 Clean. Bar looks welcoming.

We have never had a bad meal here. They are super fast too!

I have lived in the area for several years and this is the most consistent, clean, reasonable restaurant in the area. It is Americanized Mexican. The service is always pleasant and friendly. As soon as you are seated, you are greeted with chips, salsa (ok-I like mine spicier and chunky homemade) and water. I wish the refried beans looked more like refried beans instead of out of a can. My favorite has to be the Carne Asada. I wish they would give you a little more corn tortillas then 3. It usually takes me 5 to get through the meal but they charge you for anything more then 3. They consistently have specials, but I have yet try one. I will continue to frequent this establishment because I know what I am getting and they will be there tomorrow.

These seem like nice folks, but they have really dumbed down the idea of Mexican food -- apparently to suit local tastes. Ixtapa wasn't expensive, and we didn't get sick afterward. But the worst Roberto's Taco Shop knock-off in San Diego, is better than the best Mexican food in Scappoose. Sorry. Wish I could say better.

I'm grading on a heavy curve here because it is Scappoose, after all, and I'm not sure how "authentic" other folks expect the place to be. For what it is - that is, an Americanized Mexican restaurant in a small town - it's pretty damned great. Service is fast and friendly, chips & salsa are tasty enough, and the lounge has enough seating to accommodate large groups. The food is the standard fare you'd find in any establishment of its kind across middle America; basically, comfort food with Mexican flair. I tend toward the same dish, the Grande Enchilada, and it comes stuffed with meat, smothered in cheese, and piled high with lettuce, tomato, sour cream & guacamole. What more could you ask for? Sheesh, what more do you expect?

One of the best if not THE best restaurant in Scappoose. Chips & salsa are always great, and they offer a toned-down salsa for those who don't like the spice. I highly recommend any shrimp dish, especially the Camarones a la diabla.

This review isn't for the food as much as for the staff. Our family (14 of us) was headed through town on a Sunday night and stopped in, not knowing at the time that they were almost ready to close. The employees treated us so well that we didn't realize until we left that they should have been closed for almost an hour! The food was great too, so we'd definitely eat here again.

There are five basic rules all Mexican restaurants should live by: 1) Always serve Pepsi products, not Coke. 2) Sodas come with unlimited free refills to cool down those overheated taste buds 3) Excellent chips and salsa. 4) Fajitas should be served on a piping hot skillet, preferably so hot they come with a warning. 5) A friendly staff that makes you feel like you're part of the family. Ixtapa gets two stars because they only manage to meet two of those criteria. They serve Pepsi products (but you only get one refill.) And they do have good chips, although I found the salsa somewhat lacking. I'll give them some slack because I'm pretty picky about my salsa. I'm sure others like it just fine. Failing to meet the criteria for free refills, delicious fajitas, and a friendly staff is simply unacceptable though. Pros: Serves Pepsi. Chips aren't bad. You aren't going to find anything better in Scappoose for Mexican food. Cons: I'd rather eat at Taco Bell.

Good food and good service. I've eaten here many times and enjoyed it. The chimichangas, ixtapa burrito and fajitas are all very good and they have a lot of tables so there is never a wait.

This is our favorite Mexican restaurant! We've never had a bad meal here. Their nachos are excellent...we love their food period! Great service, too!

This place has been consistent in its food quality and service. I also rate cleanliness as average. The greeting staff always making you feel welcome and the server staff range from cheery to polite. Their prices are appropriate for the restaurant. We have sampled other similar Mexican restaurants in Beaverton / Hillsboro area and none have been as good as Ixtapa. We'll return again.

I'd give this place 3.75 stars-the first place I'd ever gone to in the bustling town center of rural scappoose. I didn't expect much, and I got more than I expected. The house special appetizer, sort of a crispy burrito sliced up into finger food was pretty delectable although probably not meant for 2 people. Having not worked out to a heavy extent that day, my appetite was lacking its usual gargantuan vigour. That being said, I also had an entree after that-a chile relleno and a mexican steak. The steak could have been bigger, although it was well-prepared. Atmosphere was nice and bright for an early supper, though it's a shame we weren't there for a live music evening. Those who'd think that scappoose is just full of a bunch of hicks would be pleasantly proven wrong by the quality of food here. At the very least, Ixtapa is a better place to be than La Carreta, the den of bloat where mountains of low-quality cheese top lower quality food. The rice and beans were nice as well and they do have a way with their drinks-having the option of drinking out of a bowl is pretty nice on the days when I'm feeling particularly porcine. Having sworn off cocktails, I was delighted that I could sate myself with a bit of Sauza Commerativo. I didn't have a chance to peruse their bar, but if they had that, it couldn't have been too shabby. These fellas could have done a lot worse, but I'm glad they chose not to.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
