Very good latte. Will come back when I am in Milwaukee. OR. Nice cozy place to hang out on rainy days.

I have been here a few times when it is very busy and when it's just one or two other people. Each time I had good customer service. I have had their regular coffee and a few lattes. My favorite is the Latte Dulche. It is creamy and not too sweet. The atmosphere is very relaxing but won't put you to sleep. It's the kind of coffee shop you would see on tv in the 90s.

Exactly the kind of cool, funky coffee place this town needs. High quality coffee. Fast, friendly service. Relaxed atmosphere. Eclectic but tasteful decor. Highly recommended.

Ray is great! Coffee is always spot on the shop is clean and well taken care of. All the servers are always friendly and efficient. I can't recommend this coffee shop high enough. WONDERFUL!

I have been going to Ray's Wind Horse Coffee for 2 decades. Always good, always hospitable, and an asset to the community. He's the best in town - really.

I've only been here a couple times but the people working have been really nice. The coffee is good and the sandwiches are really good. It would be nice if they made more than two special sandwiches a day but the options are always good. The roast beef was great. It has a nice feel inside with good relaxing decor and book shelves. All in all it's a pretty nice little cafe :)

Really good lattes, I'm pretty much in love. And the atmosphere is so different from the usual coffee shop--it is so western and awesome cowboy/cowgirl displays.

I had a muffin here the other day thanks to their super tempting Facebook photos (pumpkin currant!!) and found the staff to be super friendly and expedient. I live in the neighborhood and would def come again. I ordered a cider that came from a jug (no idea where from) and the muffin came from somewhere else too (it was on the tag, I just forgot where) but the staff and the atmosphere here is really pleasant. So what they lack in made-from-scratch-currency they make up for with having a unique little spot. I stopped in on my commute and there is parking right outside. I've used their WiFi before too.

Absolutely lovely cafe. From the moment I walked in, the staff was warm and welcoming and so were the aromas. I only had time for a coffee, but the pastry section looked delightful. I was really pleased to not only hear some suggestions on my coffee from the barista, but when advised of dietary restrictions, she didn't miss a beat and it was amazing!! Definitely will be back.

Consistently good coffee. The staff is accommodating for requests, and despite not the best spot for kids they're very welcoming of my two year old.

Windhorse has the best atmosphere and best coffee; my favorite joint in the PDX area. I also LOVE the decor and music variety--it's one if those places where you ask what they're playing...but the answer is that they play a radio station like Pandora. :-) The service is great, even when it's busy, and sometimes you get latte art as a surprise, depending on who's working. My kids love the bagels, and I had the most delectable lemon muffin there the other day--awesome daily variety in baked goods. The only occasional drawback, which I certainly won't discount a star for, is that it's small (read: cozy!) and I like to have meetings over coffee. So if I need to meet with more than two other people, we very sadly find more open seats in a colder atmosphere and with weak coffee around the corner.

Love, love, love this place. First off, the coffee is superior, even the 'house' coffee on offer in urns. The baked goods, while limited, are different everyday, and I've yet to pick a loser. The service is great, the baristas are friendly. If you find yourself here more than a few times, its likely that the owner will begin greeting you by name and become familiar with your usual order, offering suggestions for adaptations. The atmosphere is lovely; not a sterile chain cafe, but a warm, cozy atmosphere with a western vibe and comfortable seating. Also, it is the only place in Milwaukie open at five am! You really can't go wrong here.

Butterscotch Latte every week from this great little place. Perfect place to read a book or work on your computer.

I go here EVERY day, love the coffee and the staff, and the food's pretty good too. We started going here when we first moved to Milwaukie in '06 and were getting to know the local businesses, and we've been hooked every since.

I heart this place so much. When I walk in I feel like I've just been transported to New Mexico, another place I heart. Cool Cool Cool Place with great coffee drinks. I haven't tried their eats yet but I'm guessing I will like it. The world needs more coffee places like this. Enjoy

Best blueberry muffin I've ever had! Moist, lots of berries, and the muffin part has a nice almond-y flavor. Chai was okay, not bad but not memorable. My biggest peeve was their menu. It seemed very incomplete and jumbled, and I didn't see the sandwich menu that I'd heard about. I am very organized so this part didn't suit me. Overall, a nice stop in.

Friendly service and inviting, colorful and warm atmosphere! My husband and I shared a delicious pumpkin spice latte, ginger molasses cookie and a raspberry bar. All were very good!

One of my favorite coffee shops in town. I no longer live near Milwaukie, but I began coming in with my father before I could fully see over the countertop! The owner always greets me with a warm smile, and kind words. The coffee is wonderful, tea selection is superb, and the pastries are freshly baked and delightful.

This lovely coffee shop has become a part of my daily routine, like brushing my teeth and going to work. They make truly excellent espresso drinks, but my favorite is their iced coffee, cold-brewed, extra strong. It's a true neighborhood hangout, and any given morning, you'll see the owner chatting up the other business owners on the street, the tattooed Dark Horse dudes on their way to work, and the suits who work at one of the 13 banks that exist in a 5-block radius of downtown Milwaukie. In addition to rotating daily pastries and treats, they also offer special items like quiche once in a while - add them on Facebook to get updates and announcements. They are also a supporter of First Fridays Art Walk, which is slowly but surely becoming more established as the months roll on. Grab a coffee and a grilled bagel, take a seat, and admire the pony decor while listening to great tunes and watching the hustle and bustle of downtown Milwaukie pass you by. Great place, delicious product, good old neighborhood fun. Love!

Six of one and half a dozen of the other. I split my time pretty equally between the two coffeehouses in downtown Milwaukie, Wind Horse and Spring Creek. The reasons I visit here rather than walk to its competitor around the corner: 1) Slightly better location, just across the street from the Milwaukie Sunday Market. 2) Caffe Umbria beans. 3) My kids are slightly addicted to their fruit smoothies. 4) Decor is interesting (think upscale Southwest). You feel like you are in Arizona, not Oregon. The reasons I visit Spring Creek instead: 1) Prices. I always have mild sticker shock. This goes for the coffee and the fruit smoothies. 2) Atmosphere. If I'm going to hangout with my coffee, I prefer the environment here. 3) Staff. I've had hit or miss experiences during the past two years. They have periodic offers on Yelp (free pastry, free coffee), and chances are you will get a blank stare and feel like an idiot when showing the staff the offer on your phone. To be fair, they aren't the only business who haven't informed their staff. It just seems particularly awkward here. Completely unrelated to the coupons, I've just had better staff interactions at Spring Creek. Do I love the place? No Am I happy there are two good coffeehouses in Milwaukie? Yes Is competition a good thing? For the consumer, definitely yes.

I bought an 8 oz Mocha, and I went out empty handed. Two customer after got their coffee and never got mine. Customer service is terrible. I will NEVER buy coffee from this place ever.

I like coffee houses, the feeling of walking into a world that someone created in order for me to deliver caffeine to my system, through various good to great tasting methods. I love coffee houses in Portland, at least the ones with free wifi. Why? Because it gets me out of the house and into the world for a reasonable expense to enjoy my caffeine delivery. I find it terribly funny that I wake up, go about my day, and on most days, have an URGE to go to a particular coffee house. Today, it was Wind Horse in downtown Milwaukie. I have to say that they make one of THE BEST Mochas I've had the pleasure to enjoy. Now, it's not like the decadent dessert one I enjoyed at Legares, and it's definitely a bit on the sweet side, but not too sweet, it has some extra layer of flavor that a coffee, wine or perfume lover could better describe. I won't try, rather I'll just come back for another one. They also make great panini grilled sandwiches, and they do bagels on the panini press too. Yes, I'm sure the bagels are more fattening this way, but, OH, MY, G - A - W - D! They are worth the calories, warm, grilled and truly an indulgence. Fun SW decor, combined with various soothing tunes, and an exceptionally friendly staff, Wind Horse is one of my Portland Faves.

Since my post 6 months ago, I have noticed a bit of a change at Wind Horse. They now get my bagel just how I like it, and have stopped charging for whip cream and things that would be included at other coffee shops. The owner wants to keep the shop pretty basic so he has decided for now not to carry any blended drinks, which is a little disappointing but I also don't discount his personal vision for the shop. He started carrying a new brand of smoothies that are not "ultrapasturized" like the Odwallas they carried before and the owner seems to want to cater to more health-conscious clientele. Keep up the good improvements!

This place kicks MAJOR bootie. The Barista is a great guy and knows his stuff. They have DELICIOUS sandwiches and homemade soup !! The wireless takes a few minutes to work but that is really not something to take down a star for. It's also decorated beautifully and has comfy chairs. As for the drinks. Well its fairly priced and tastes amazing. I had the Honey Almond Latte which had a great nutty flavor but they have a great assortment of loose teas and cold drinks available.

I leave Portland to go to Wind Horse. It wins best coffeeshop for atmosphere and kindness. I have had only wonderful experiences there, from days spent next to the window writing a novel, to dropping by on a hot day by bike to get a delicious rooibos iced tea. The delectable food - on par with any coffee/lunch spot in PDX - and warm, desert-esque decor offers positive a positive association to the mediocre downtown of Milwaukie. I love this place, and will go back again and again for the owner's friendliness and great food and coffee.

Don't know about the coffee but the grilled panini sandwiches and baked goods are off the chain.

Had I been asked to write a review about Wind Horse even a year ago, I'd have passed; had I been forced with a gun to my head, I'd have given it a one-star rating: I was on around a four-year boycott of the place. In the past (and as some others have mentioned), tipping is a big deal (sometimes, I will just get coffee and all it requires is being handed a cup), so I am not sure if that warrants a tip. In the past, however, I remember being a quarter short for my purchase that day and told, "Guess you're out of luck..." despite having been in there every day for a couple years (What --are you telling Norm to get out of CHEERS now?) and the very odd "toasting fee," for breakfast sandwiches and bagels (I swear to god I am not making this up; whilst I don't get food here anymore, there used to be a surcharge for toasting). Additionally, attitude must have been included with that surcharge, because often times I left feeling toasted, even though my bagel was ice-cold. Then along came Spring Creek. The coffee vicegrip on Milwaukie, Oregon, had been lifted, and the proprietor knew he needed to change things or he'd lose business -- and lose business he did, as I began to frequent Spring Creek more and more, as did a lot of other folks. For example, the Fancy Ladies Guild, who, if you know Milwaukie, know as a group of middle-to-older women that walk in the morning and have coffee together --I think they left Wind Horse because they were told they were "Being too loud." What owner does that? It's guaranteed business EVERY DAY. So, at the urging of a colleague to give this place another chance, I started going back there from about a year ago. I have to say, it might have been the realization that there is no longer any coffee monopoly on Milwaukie, or maybe the owner had some realizations, but this place has really improved. A lot. Like, impressively. The attitude of the employees is great, the service is friendly, and even when it's packed with people and the lines get long, they still get things done efficiently -- it's usually pretty packed -- the place is that good. Irrelevant note: The two girls that work there (at the time of this writing) are knockouts. Wow. The coffee here is superior to anything in the Milwaukie Area for sure, and most certainly better than Starbucks. Also, Dutch Brothers doesn't have anything on Wind Horse. So, if you're up for plain coffee and/or coffee products (Mochas, Lattes, etc.), you simply cannot go wrong with Wind Horse. The only drawback would be that they (very justifiably, in a business sense) charge for refills (whereas Spring Creek does not), but really, since the coffee is that much better, it's not surprising. As I mentioned above, I rarely get bagels or food, but when I have, they're superb. They do it just right and don't skimp on portions of meat, cheese or cream cheese. Sometimes, I will get pastries -- all of which have been outstanding thus far -- and the "day old bake," is really one of the better deals in Milwaukie. Their grilled sandwiches are also superb. A few times, Craven Raven bakery has been there, too, with samples of delicious baked goods; Ray (the owner) does a good job with sourcing and is very good at picking up varied selections from different bakeries, etc., whereas I believe Spring Creek gets all their baked goods from one source. I don't often drink tea, but in the very few occasions I have purchased tea at Wind Horse, it has been great. In terms of price, it is (as other reviewers have mentioned), on the pricier side. But it's wholly worth every penny. If I am going to pay for coffee, it had better be good, and Wind Horse delivers on this. So much, in fact, that I'd rather pay for refills (on the days that I get straight coffee). In short, Wind Horse has withstood the test of time in the ever-changing Milwaukie landscape because the owner is good at adapting his business to the needs presented by his customers. Additionally, the decor is very specific: It has a theme that lives up to its name, without being too silly or overdone, and everything is tastefully picked out and presented. It doesn't feel cluttered, or "force themed," but everything fits in there organically. I had to bring up Spring Creek, because the two places are basically next door, and it's the most honest comparison. I reviewed Spring Creek, as well, and gave them a good review (they're a good business, and deserve it), but when it comes to the two things I look for most in a coffee shop/restaurant: 1. Am I treated well? 2. Is the product good? Wind Horse really delivers. 1 doesn't change at either shop, and 2 is where Wind Horse excels. The coffee is fantastic, and ultimately, that's why I am going there in the first place. If you're in Milwaukie, please check this place out. It's superb!

Pros: This is a cute coffee shop with a variety of tables, chairs, and comfy furniture to lounge on. They have a good selection of coffees and teas, breakfast pastries, and even a few sandwiches (they call them "toasties"). Cons: This place has fallen into the unfortunate trap of all coffee shops: playing music in the background. Unfortunately, they have chosen to play soft rock (think K103) and it's enough to make you rush through your breakfast and rush the heck out of there. Also, staff seemed unable to handle the morning rush. They initially gave us the wrong change and then it took quite awhile (and a reminder or two) to get our croissant and bagel. After waiting for 15 minutes we asked for our bagel again and discovered that one of the staff had delivered it to an empty table at the other end of the store, despite having talked to us at our table ten minutes earlier.

I have had coffee around the country and there is great coffee and great shops. This place has both- a true gathering place- a community - a lot of regulars-but frabkly the coffee is very very good. Of course hard core StarB's will never venture but if you are up for a treat go for it. Pastry's made locally by a very good small batch bakery- and without any hesitation I swear I never had a better slice of cherry pie- amazing off the charts- and Ray - owner - told me he had pulled it out of the freezer as day old went over time-he had put it back and warped me by giving it to me. I am from Iowa- and the Dutch bakery's in Pella is my gold standard for bakery's- this makes it! Great coffee - espresso is very good- thus the regulars. Consistently good - when not in area - always use Windhorse as benchmark for comparison. I won't say he is best- don't think a person can-but he is as good as and much better than most- well worth checking out. Sunday's market is a great time to check it out.

Can't help comparing this experience with my wonderful lunch at nearby Spring Creek Coffee. First, very limited lunch choices: ham panini or cheesesteak sandwich. I had the ham, and it was decent enough, if a little small and uninteresting. I appreciated that it came with a side of sweet red grapes. Nice seating inside and out, but I opted for outside because of the raucous children indoors. Service was definitely not as friendly as at Spring Creek.

Great coffee, the atmosphere is warm and lacking the commercial sterility that plagues us today. Super friendly staff and a mean chicken chipolte sandwich

I like this place. I like that they are one of the few coffee joints in downtown Milwaukie. I like that they're locally owned. I like the bagels and panini they sell. There are just some things that seem a little...off. I ordered a tea to stay and expected to get either a) a teapot with a strainer in it and an empty ceramic cup, or b) a large ceramic cup with the teabag in it. Instead I got a biggish ceramic cup with the tea in it (already brewed), no tea bag, and a lot of room at the top. Firstly, I think I should get to decide how strong I'd like my tea. Secondly, I think the understanding is that if you by tea to stay, you sort of expect that you'll get a tea bag and you'll be able to refill your cup if you'd like. Yes? The other thing I got was a bagel with cream cheese, and again, the cream cheese was already on the bagel whereas I'd like to have it on the side so I can decide how much to put on. I guess I know what to specifically ask for next time? Also, I think they should theme the music they play with the decor. They've gone to all the trouble of decorating so specifically, why not tie it all together with western-themed music? There's a lot of variety in how you could approach it - vintage country, contemporary western (like local Spaghetti Western band Federale).

The Monin brand syrups was the first indication that I'd stumbled upon a good choice for coffee. The fact that they have a lavender flavoured drink right on the menu was the second. Cowboy decor, good music and -seriously- one of the best cups of coffee I've ever had sealed the deal. Fantastic!

Wow, where the hell am I? Is this 'downtown Milwaukie'? Interesting. Now, how'd I get here? Oh, yeah...just kept driving southbound on 17th and somehow ended up here. What's cool about this place is the oddly calming orange colors. It was like Sedona, AZ, walked in, looked around the place, and said, "Hmm, I think I'll leave my mark here," and then suddenly exploded so that its colors landed on every surface, in every nook and cranny. A huge portrait of horses in motion along the main wall was so hypnotic, I must've stared at it for a full five minutes before being able to look away. Thankfully, the constant twang of country music broke my trance quickly enough to don some headphones. Thank you, Pandora. The 'Shanti' tea I'm drinking is very delicious, although I'm certain any one of the other dozen or so loose leaf teas they have available would've been just as flavorful. They serve Caffe Umbria here, which is generally good coffee, so if I happen upon this place again in the future, and felt like going by way of the darker liquid, at least I'll know it's the equally tasty kind. And, thankfully, there's nothing about Wind Horse Coffee that's caustic enough to make me not want to stop by the next time.

I like this shop just fine. Their coffee is better than Starbucks, and the location is ideal for access from work... I guess I've just had some negative experiences there.. We go there regularly for large orders from my work, and it seems the biggest interaction with them is in regards to the tip. I have gone in numerous times, and get little interaction with the employees. For some reason, the focus seems to be on the tipping, and the drinks are already more expensive than Dutch Bros (Where I usually go).. They even have a sign regarding one of the local "discount off" specials to make sure customers know that the TIP is additional. So, the coffee shop itself has a very comfortable feel to it, and I like that. They have SF white chocolate (which isn't always an option at most places) and the coffee itself is good. But I would say, be prepared to tip. Some of the girls at the office say it used to be friendlier in there, but has seemed a bit more "down" lately.. Who knows?! Maybe it will pick back up.. In the meantime, I'm sure we will continue to get our coffees there:)

I've investigated coffee in Milwaukie and I think WIndhorse pulls the best latte. They use Umbria beans. The place has a lot of character, the owner and baristas are very nice and the clientel has always been friendly too!

I'm from San Diego, visiting family in Milwaukie. This place has great coffee drinks, faboo sandwiches, and a nice atmosphere to enjoy both. I wish my San Diego neighborhood had something this good!

Great place to go for coffee in downtown Milwaukie, close to the Farmer's Market held on Sundays. The staff is happy to chat about your likes and dislikes and make suggestions; the person we spoke to said they originally didn't want to put up a menu to make the process more interactive. The decor is attractive and there is both regular seating and sofa/armchairs. There's also art for sale on the walls.
