I love their bread, but who the hell serves a ham and cheese croissant cold?! What bright person thought about that one? I felt like I was eating a cold hot pocket. As a matter of fact I didn't even eat 1/10 of it before I decided to bring it home and warm it up instead of waiting in that pretentious line of yours to get half ass service.

Note - this is a review for the lunch menu only, not the baked goods. Bakery = 5 stars for quality. I like hideaway bakery's lunchtime offerings. They have particularly good salads and their sandwiches and other entrees are solid. My bone to pick with them is their inconsistent quality. It's so bad! I sometimes hesitate to come because it's disappointing to get a poor quality version of something you enjoy, and pay full price for it. Every single time I've ordered a salad the prep and presentation has been different. Sometimes dressings are thick and creamy, sometimes they are super runny. Will the tempeh on my salad be steaks, or strips, or tiny chunks this time. Will the plate overflow with lettuce, or will it be a single handful. Will I need to throw a life preserver on the plate or ask for another side of dressing. What will the ratio of vegetables to lettuce be, and will each ingredient be in its own pile or pre-tossed, you can't know. Some variation between chefs is normal, and I think encouraged. But it also makes sense to have certain plating and food ratios set. Love you hideaway! I'll not stop eating lunch here and your staff are always wonderful.

This place is a must grub. Insanely good bakery. Very nice heated outdoor seating area. Their cream cheese Danish is thick and delicious and not like any others I have had. I can't wait to come back here again.

There are several clearly marked vegan options, all of which are rather tasty. The bagels are vegan and are my favorite. They have earth balance. It would be great if they would get a vegan cream cheese. The fireplace makes it a great work spot. The food counter where you order has to be one of the most ill-designed setups out there. Rather annoying.

It is a very charming shop and the review is only based on the chocokate croissant and potato donuts that I had. Seeing that wood stove, I wanted to give this place a 5 star already! But that pain au chocolat was just too doughy for me. It's not flaky enough. The chocolate was good. The potato donut was a bit too sweet. It is deep fried so it still picked up a lot of oil. I will still go back and try the bread and their pizza given the chance.

We ate lunch with a toddler midweek at this bakery. The sandbox was a pleasant diversion and she loved the chocolate macaron. It was tasty. The veggie burrito, sandwiches, and salads were very flavorful. Would eat here with or without a toddler in need of playtime at lunchtime.

This bakery seems to be tailored to eating in or taking bakery items out. Unfortunately I ordered a lunch to go and although I was happy with the food the service left a lot to be desired. Time from order to receipt was usual however I was not told when my drink was up as I was supposed to have been and I was handed the to go items without a bag, utensils or napkins. Nor was there any take out silverware to be seen anywhere!!! I was not about to go and ask at the window since when I had asked about the drink ordered I was curtly replied to. So perhaps to stay would be better service. As far as the chai drink it was ok a three star the sandwich five star and the salad a two. Two large chunks of cheese were thrown on top and since I had no utensils I had to use fingers to break it up as well as eat it. So customer service a two.

While Hideaway Bakery does produce some amazing parties and bread, going to the actual bakery for some coffee and a bite to eat is hit-and-miss to say the least. On one particular instance, on a Friday morning, my husband and I came in to order coffee and, my favorite, the samosas. Instead of checking with the kitchen, the cashier told us there were none, so we settled for the Cornish Pastie and asked for it to be heated up. When we turned around to find a seat we found that as we were ordering, a brand new batch of samosa had filled the pastry case. This frustrated us, but we decided to let it slide. Out on the patio we got our coffee, and started chatting. After a while, we decided to check and see if the Pastie was done. My husband went back up to the cashier to ask, turns out she had forgotten it in the oven and it was burned. She asked if he wanted her to fix a new one. He said yes, and she immediately tried to convince him that it was "only a little burnt." He still said respectfully no, we would like one that's not burned. She begrudgingly acquiesced, then immediately offered the burned Pastie to a friend who was hanging around, which, again, we found extremely rude to do right in front of us. My husband has to stand and wait for the new Pastie to be cooked so she didn't forget it again. I really wish I could give this bakery a good review, but the utter lack of customer service and basic respect for the clientele is reproachful. Pick up the bread at the nearby Market of Choice where the customer service is exceptional, and if you want to have coffee and fresh baked goods, it's better to go to Metropol, which is close by.

I was a huge coffee drinker for years but gave it up years ago for green tea. Every once in awhile I still love a good latte. It's a treat for me so I'm fairly picky. The barista- I believe her name was Julie, recommended the bourbon caramel latte. BLEW.MY.MIND. This was no joke- the BEST latte I have ever had in my life. A big kudos to her and to Hideaway Bakery for gaining a new customer!!

I really dig this place for a light lunch or pastry: fresh, tasty combinations for salads and sandwiches, and a nice outdoor eating area (as long as you don't mind kids). Especially around lunchtime the wait times on food are kind of absurd (~30m the last time), but if you time it right the turnaround isn't a problem. The baguette I got was good but not fantastic, and I'm looking forward to trying their pastas. Hint: try a mix of their ice teas; hibiscus+mint is super refreshing!

So the coffee was good, service was nice, and the coffee cake was good, but they do not have wifi. I went there to work, and I need wifi. I mean, I know, technology doesn't work sometimes, but I asked someone about it and she told me that it had been down for weeks but that they were trying to fix it. Weeks?

Delicious and gluten free items! The outside space is easy with small kids, which I appreciate.

I so want to love this neighborhood cafe, but after 5 visits I keep finding myself disappointed. The food here is amazing, but be aware this is SLOW food. If you've got an hour to kill, this is probably a great spot (it's a cool location), but if you're on the move or trying to get a quick lunch, this is not the place for you. Ordering a sandwich to go takes an astonishing 20 - 35 minutes. I expected faster service for a place where you order at a counter and pick up at a window outside. Details below. Trip #1 - breakfast. pastries and coffee. impressed with experience and food. Trip #2 - pastry stop on the way to work. 7 minute wait behind 1 customer, had to leave without even ordering. looks like I should have planned for 20 minutes. Trip #3 - stopped in for to-go sandwich & salad. 22 minute wait. got home and had the wrong salad. Trip #4 - tried to stop for lunch at 3:05. discovered they're open til 6, but stop serving lunch at 3. were turned away hungry. :( Trip #5 - called ahead to-go order. sandwich & salad. told "twenty minutes, to be safe". anticipating a wait, arrived at 0:22, paid. waited. at 0:27 waitress apologizes, out of chevre for chevre sandwich. 0:34 to-go order is finally ready.

Time to update my Hideaway review to reflect the fact that I'm not as huge a fan as I once was. Yes, I still think it's great having a barista within walking distance, but I frequently find myself choosing elsewhere for my caffeine needs lately simply because of little details that are slippin. For one, this place is now overrun with Southies. And that wouldn't be so bad except the space really can't support such a following. I am happy to bow out and let the Mazzis run a bang-up biz in favor of smaller, quieter places on my Saturday mornings. Also, I haven't enjoyed my pastries as much when I do brave a trip in on the weekdays. The last parma braid I had contained a minuscule piece of proscuitto, and not as much parm as I recall. The fig anise roll didn't have the same texture I was used to, and most recent time I indulged in a macaroon I was disappointed in how dry it was. Still, I have had some good times here, I love their woodfired pizza (though I don't brave the crowds anymore on Tuesdays either), and a latte here always cheers me up (even though the to-go lids are dusty). It's A-OK, but not the same to me.

I love this place its cute and cozy. Coffee and pastries are delicious. Any chance to come here I will. But this morning I had the worst service ever. I know that these things happen but those moments can make or break a business. I'll continue to come here just with higher expectations next time.

Great local place. The bread and pastries are very impressive and tasty. The only problem really is the service. Getting our coffee drinks took too long, and as I watched other customers, they felt the same as well. There is a service "window" outside where they yell out your coffee/drink order when it's ready, and it definitely just has an unfriendly, factory vibe to it which contradicts what they are really going for here. Service definitely needs to be a bit more friendly to customers. Food is good, just don't have high expectations for service.

Here's the thing about Hideaway-- it's the best there is within a mile or two radius and the ONLY place for coffee in South Eugene (south of 29th) , so I think folks are giving it lots of slack. I keep thinking that if anyone ever opened a different coffee shop in that part of town it could give this place an easy run for its money. The pastries here are just okay. I've been here many many times and never had what I would call great croissant, loaf, scone, or muffin. I've even had to return a few because they have been so unbelievably dry that I just couldn't stuff them in my mouth. This goes for both savory and sweet items -- be prepared to be underwhelmed by the sometimes overly greasy and usually dry baked goods. The coffee tastes really good. The service is for the most part okay, but again be prepared to be underwhelmed -- the counter service can be not so friendly at times, and usually pretty slow. The atmosphere is both horrible and wonderful at the same time. Horrible for the layout of entering and ordering in one big bakery tunnel, but wonderful for the outside patio, the indoor fireplace, and sandbox! Come for the Pizza Nights in the summer time. But don't everyone come, since I still want to get a table. Edit 7/14.... Dear hideaway bakery, You need to deep clean your entire facility. Or at least wipe it down periodically. Hideaway feels more and more like a health hazard each time I go in.

One of the best bakeries in Eugene. I've found very few in my travels that compare. They have amazing everything and you have to try their smoked salmon ravioli that is frozen for takehome. I cook mine with a tomato and coconut milk from a can along with spices and mushrooms. They also serve breakfast.

I love the Hideaway Bakery so much that I almost don't want to review it, for fear it will become even more popular than it already is. Great atmosphere: the outdoor patio perfect for warm, sunny days, and indoor seating with fireplace a cozy respite from cold, damp weather. The Parisian bfast sammie (egg & cheese on croissant, yowzas), tempeh reuben and vegetarian lasagna are all outstanding, but I doubt you can go wrong with anything on their menu. Their mochas are always spot-on, which I can't say of any other place in Eugene. I'm not even remotely gluten-free and yet find their gluten-free bread delicious. Summer pizza nights on the patio are fantastic, although the way-too-loud music makes conversation difficult. Sometimes the food takes a while, often folks stand too close in line, occasionally an order is forgotten, but none of this is enough to take away any stars. For cozy & delicious, the Hideaway has my vote!

The Hideaway Bakery is definitely a hideaway. It's the perfect place for a quiet, early morning cup of coffee. Inside by the hearth is a great place to ponder and relax, and later in the morning, the outside tables are a fun hub-bub of interesting and great people and fabulous, FABULOUS food and baked goods. The perfect little place!

Reuben sandwich was excellent. Kids had very gourmet grilled cheese. Tea and pastries are good. I can see why others have noted in other reviews why the service is slow. Took awhile to get our food.

Some of the most delicious pastries around. I've never been more angry with my dog then when he ate my almond bear claw today! Very comfortable feeling while here, everyone is in a good mood!

Best hidden bakery in Eugene! Everything that I have tried has been nothing short of heavenly! I like that you have the unique experience of enjoying a nice cup of coffee, under a heated roof while listening to the rain. Their bread is sensational and they have the best sourdough bread that I have ever eaten. Just make sure to get there before 3pm because that is when they stop serving their lunch!!!

  • Christopher B.

For what I get when I go here, which is a ham-and-cheese croissant, a cappuccino, and sometimes some bread for meals later in the day or week, this place can't be beat. I'd never consider getting bread or breakfast pastries from anywhere else in town. Not worth the inevitable disappointment. But on the rare occasions where I've gone in for lunch or a full made-to-order breakfast, it's been slow, crowded, and kinda pricey. Just stick to the breakfast bread products and coffee and you won't be disappointed. I prefer to eat outside on the (covered, space-heated, hanging-plant-festooned) patio rather than inside, because the nonverbal shrieks of the kids in the sandbox are more pleasant to listen to, more firmly rooted in reality, than some of the conversations you'll overhear from the adult South Eugenians sitting by the fire inside. But that's just a personal quibble.

A blissful day starts with a latte and chocolate croissant. Great indoor/outdoor seating. They lose a star and the ridiculously haughty, grumpy girls often working there and the delivery system that often means standing in the cold or rain for a while to make sure you know when your order is up. Go there when you have time to linger and on a cold day, aim for the indoor fireplace or outdoor heaters, it's quite lovely.

Wonderful flavors in the burrito. Fresh veggies and could easily be split between two people. The berry turnover was amazing, buttery flaky crust and tart berries! Yum!

This is my absolute favorite bakery in town. I use to go there solo and enjoy the calm sitting by the fireplace. Now, I go there with my daughter and friends to enjoy the sandbox, orange hazelnut pinwheels, and coffee.

I visited Hideaway with my boyfriend this morning and it was a really nice experience. Parking is sparse on the side closest to the bakery, but there is more on the other side of the building (closer to Mazzi's entrance). We initially walked into the indoor seating area instead of the cafe because the front entrance was poorly marked...oops! The woman to took our order was super friendly and, despite some of the negative reviews about service being slow, our service was really quick. We ordered a turkey and cheese croissant - my boyfriend admitted the croissant was the best part about it and he would just order a plain one next time - and two drinks. Everything was great. The food tasted wonderful and their bakery selection was fairly extensive. Next time I would get one of the blueberry cream vessels, it looked fantastic. We ate outside. It was quiet and really laid back. I will definitely come here again!

Hideaway Bakery does produce a good product, I will give them that. Here is the problem. If Hideaway is going to serve the public as a restaurant, they must incorporate some form of good customer service. Having read through previous reviews on this site, that seems to be the common theme. On my last visit, I had a 30 min lunch break so I ordered to go. I arrived at the pick up window and the lady told me I had to come inside and stand in the 10+ person deep line where people are placing their orders to pay. I think you guys are missing the idea of why people order to go in the first place....they do not have time to dine in your establishment and time is an issue. Now with my food getting cold in front of me, I was requested to pick it up and go stand in a 10-15 min line just to swipe my credit card. This is bad restaurant flow and bad for business. You would think that picking up "to go" at the "pick up" window would be the case, but not here. I told the lady I did not have the time to stand in the line to place orders, that is why I ordered to go, and she reluctantly took my car and swiped it. 10 seconds later, all was done. But her attitude is my lasting impression. She was acting like I was an inconvenience and was all rattled up and slamming things down. I have been in the restaurant business for over 25 years and this is what customers remember over your fabulous bread. If Hideaway is going to succeed as a restaurant, then the attitude of at least their front of the house employees needs to change. And management may want to set up a better way to handle their "to go" business, how about a second cashier for starters.

Hideaway is one of my favorite stops in Eugene. As the name implies, this community gem manages to be inconspicuously tucked away in a location that's simple enough to get to, if you know where you're going. I discovered Hideaway rather by accident one Summer evening during an outdoor pizza night. (Pizza Nights are a wonderful outdoor Summer event, but I'll save that topic for a separate review.) Hideaway bakery features wonderful hand crafted savory and sweet baked goods with the pleasant inclusion of gluten free options. The setting is pleasantly relaxed, with covered outdoor and indoor seating options. Cool and damp weather is tempered by radiant heaters in the outdoor seating area; but if that's too Spartan retreat indoors and grab a seat near the fireplace. It's a win-win scenario. The baked goods are among the best around, coffee's great, pleasant community feel, and the staff is casual yet attentive. There's plenty more to say about this delightful neighborhood bakery & coffee shop, all of it positive. Stop by and enjoy it yourself, just be sure to leave me a GF pastry.

This is still THE go-to spot for superb bakery items, be it fresh bread, ciabatta, or unique items (samosas, pasties, berry-cream filled "vessels," potato donuts, for example). The quality and freshness of sweet and savory bakery for takeout is well-worth the wait in the (usually) quite-long line. That said, service remains fairly marginal (hence the downgrade to three stars). While the staff are almost universally very friendly and try to be helpful, the chance of getting an order correct for dining on the patio is slim, and the wait for hot items from the kitchen is often 30-45 minutes. That wouldn't cut it at a typical breakfast joint, and certainly doesn't make sense for a croissant with scrambled eggs and ham. We stopped again today, and had several mistakes in our order. Simple things: incorrect sweetener in a coffee drink (asked for sugar-free), hot latte prepared when the order was for iced (quickly corrected), bakery item served cold when we were asked if we wanted it heated (of course we said yes), had to remind the cashier twice about our take-home frozen pasta (kept forgetting to get it). This was on a slow day, but we have also seen it during busy times. The bakery quality would easily make this a 4+ or 5 star stop for us were it not for a very slow kitchen and frequent mistakes by the cashier staff. We'll keep going back, and keep hoping for more space in the ordering area, as well as more attentive staff!

Gluten and I broke up. Though sometimes, we'll have an encounter to reminisce the good ol' days, with me feeling full and immediately satisfied. But then the high I would get from the rendezvous quickly dissipates, leaving me behind with disgust. Lethargic, remorseful and bloated, I would vow to stay away. But I'm too headstrong and too passionate (aka stubborn). How can something that feels so right be so wrong?! And through the years that we've been together, how can it come to an end?! Enter Hideaway Bakery. They have gluten-free bread. No, it's not the same. It'll never be the same. But there are sacrifices to made. I just know that I need to love and take care of myself first. Small, delectable sandwiches in gluten-free breads are available ( and I really liked the turkey and cheese, but surprised that it was so small and expensive for its size). In addition, they have a great selection of teas, make good coffee and a wonderful patio that has to absolutely be enjoyed on a sunny day.

Don't understand how people give the coffee good ratings. It's pretty mediocre really. They need to use better beans. It's the only thing I don't like here, we'll the coffee and the wait on weekends if I'm not there early. Love the pastries and bread. Usually go somewhere else for coffee though.

I don't venture to their actual store much, but at Saturday market's, I usually pick up a loaf of bread, and some of their pastries!

This is a really comfortable place. I love that you can choose to sit inside or outside. We went on a Saturday morning. The coffee is, hands down, the best. I ordered a sticky roll - it was huge - and tasty. The gf got the breakfast tacos (w/ seasoned tofu - so good it almost make me think I could do the vegetarian thing). Lots of families and couples. A great place to spend the morning.

As far as the quality of bread goes, Hideaway Bakery has, hands down, the best bread in the city. The ciabatta is truly divine: Light, airy, and such a chewy yet thin, crisp crust. If you like dense, rich, dark German breads, Hideaway has the closest to German bread I've seen in America, though I do find these breads a little too sour. Their trademark sweet pastry is a doughnut made out of potato bread dough. The flavor's not all that interesting to me, kind of a dark sugary flavor, quite dense, but then I'm not a huge cake-donut person anyway. They also have the best savory pastries I've eaten in my life: the parmesan prosciutto braids. They're salty, flaky, chewy, cheesy and hammy (okay I couldn't think of a better adjective for ham). I usually visit Hideaway while going to the market next to the bakery, on Saturdays in summer. We buy pork from a place called Biancalana there (local, healthy pork!). You can have breakfast or lunch at Hideaway too while you're there. The only thing I've ever had other than pastries, breads and coffee is the breakfast burrito with egg and vegetables. It was sooo much better than I expected, and I'm really not a breakfast burrito lover. They only have seating outside though, so this is really a summer option. My biggest gripe with Hideaway is the service. It's often bad. They'll forget about your food despite a reminder. If you don't have it within ten minutes, go back inside and demand that they go check in the kitchen while you wait, or they'll send you back out and do nothing. Service isn't terribly friendly most of the time either. They have the goods though, the bread is great, and ultimately that's what matters most to me.

Ever since starting school here in Eugene I have been on the hunt to find the hidden gems of the city. One day casually strolling around amazon park I notice the small sign under Mazzi's restaurant informing me of a saturday market from 9-2pm behind the restaurant and then right below that is the sign for the hideaway bakery. Shocked that I have never noticed this sign before I decided that it would be my next destination for my weekend treat. I am so glad I noticed it because it sure it a hidden gem, and hidden. The food selection isn't large but fresh, many vegan options, healthy and delightfully tasteful. I ordered the wrap-less burrito for my breakfast with a small coffee and a potato doughnut hole. I must say everything was great! The doughnut hole was consumed within seconds, which too my surprise was not dense but light and perfectly sweetened to accompany my coffee. My wrap-less burrito was everything I could hope for in a breakfast. Full of flavor and wasn't too big where I had to unbutton my pants afterward. My friend got a breakfast sandwich on artisan bread... my mouth is watering thinking of it.. it was that good. I will be back!

I come here at gaze at navels, marvel at the crafts and admire the Subaru's! The croissants are pretty nice, and so are any of the coffee choices. I can grab a tasty breakfast, sit in front of the fire and work. You can't really beat that in the winter. In the summer they have dinner sometimes, and pizza. The outdoor patio is a great place to chill. The only complaint is that the inside area is very small, but you usually don't wait for long in there. The market on Saturday is small, and uncrowded. They also support CSA! Coffee, local foods, CSAs, a little off the beaten path and of course the above mentioned Subarus... this is every Oregonians dream spot.

The coffee was delicious. Smooth and tasty. And they even have a little sandbox in the corner so mommy playdates seem convenient. The bagels? BLECH. Stick with the scones and others such stuff. And please, Hideaway, please do not label those round toasts with circles in the middle a "bagel."

Many reviews are claiming that this place is over priced. I suppose I've never thought of that, but do not disagree. I think that you are paying for not only the delicious food (because it IS delicious) but also for the general atmosphere and ambiance. My boyfriend and I were there yesterday, and we were commenting on how we've never been disappointed at how Hideaway gently nurtures our Saturday late-morning hang over. Healthy choices, yet the comforting "I'm so full I'm about to burst" that you'd expect from your greasier or cheaper spots. And any reviewer who says the staff is mediocre- I'd have to disagree. Our register gal yesterday was a bit slow, but we went at a busy time and we think she was maybe new (we're regulars, and had never seen her before.) But with that said, the staff has always been very friendly, warm and wonderful. We once waited quite a while for our order, and the waitress brought us our money back when she brought us our food. All in all, you can't beat Hideaway Bakery on a warm, Saturday morning. You just can't.

That was a wonderful surprise. We've never had any luck with food or coffee when stopping through Eugene. This time we were given a little heads up from the charming folks at Nobel Coffee in Ashland about this lovely little gem. I thank my lucky stars I can now continue my coffee snobbery one more leg of the occasional drive south. The pastries were delicious and the coffee (Nobel) was superb. There was even a cool little sandbox on their patio so the kiddos could enjoy the stop as well! I hear their pizza is also amazing.

What a funky old spot. Definitely would give 4.5 for the bread, which is what this spot should be all about. Good selection of various breads, pastries and salty treats! But moving on to the cafe - the food (sandwiches and salads) are OK, definitely the accompanying breads are great, but not worth the expensive prices coupled with the small portions. The crowd is also quite peculiar: money people who like to look at each other. Felt almost like L.A., except there were only white people here.

I love Hideaway. The coffee is consistently good and their delicious baked creations are as good as it gets. I also love that you can sit outdoors pretty much year round thanks to their awesome patio with heaters. Sandbox for the kids and the there is always a nice crowd here. Try the vegan chocolate chip cookie. I am not even vegan and I would totally arm wrestle your mom to have one. Also, if you are making yourself a delicious dinner that calls for some amazing bread, do yourself a favor and skip the grocery store and stop at Hideaway. You will not be sorry.

I feel like I must be entering a black hole and experiencing a different bakery than the other reviewers, but I just can't get into Hideaway. I have been truly let down by every baked good I have tried there. The last two times I've gone I've literally thrown them away. That's saying something, because I have a serious sweet tooth and will eat a Hostess if it's left in front of me. I've had their giant macaroon, which was a giant meringue puck that practically broke off my tooth. It makes me wonder if they have every actually eaten a macaroon before, because the texture and filling couldn't be more wrong. I've had pasty, under-baked carrot cake with decent icing, at least. I've tried a gluten free cupcake which was like a dried out cornmeal biscuit with 3 day old icing to saw through on top. I'm just not impressed. The manner in which you have to force yourself down a hallway to order from staff who are too good to help you doesn't enhance the experience. They get two stars for using organic ingredients and for having decent artisan bread.

What a great place to go with your sandbox loving toddler, even on a rainy day. The coffee is tasty (big cups available - hooray) and the pastries are sinfully delicious. Parents Note: Your kid wants to go in the sandbox. And eat an enormous potato donut.

I tend to stick to downtown, as there is plenty of coffee closer to me, which is the only reason I have avoided Hideaway for so long. Let me tell you, that was a mistake: everything I have had there has been awesome. My mom, who is a huge coffee snob, fell in love with their coffee while visiting over the holidays, and while I am much less adept at coffee snobbery, even I can tell they make damn good coffee. In terms of food, the loaf of bread I got was great, the bagels were chewy and good, and their ravioli was fantastic. We got the Sundried Tomato Chevre and the Spinach Cheese for our Christmas dinner, and they did not disappoint. I will definitely be going back for both their coffee and their array of other goodies.

The food is good, like their burrito breads and scones, but their service is slooooow.

I've been to Hideaway Bakery a number of times. The baked goods are pretty good - not superb, but solid. In fairness I have not tried the breads themselves and these are what other reviewers rave about. I have had things like muffins and specialty breads (like banana bread) and they were pretty good. The Pastie was quite tasty, but seemed to take FOREVER to get to me. And herein lies the issue. The factor that I consider when I go to Hideway is the time it takes to get served. The service is not very efficient and they serve one...person....at.....a.....time..... Maybe this is attributable to the no-microwave-style culture, or maybe they have lots of time on their hands. But for me, a busy parent, I don't always have 15-20 minutes to wait for something to knosh on. So when time is an issue I head to somewhere like market of choice. Even considering parking and their lines, it can be faster and the quality is about the same. The outdoor terrace is nice, though. If you have some time, and a little tyke to play in the sand, it is a very pleasant place to sit.

Did I go to the wrong Hideaway? I heard and read such great things. Not sure what to say. The service was okay. We were told that our mochas were "on the shelf" and we could go and get them. Which was weird considering she walked all the way over to us to say it. Maybe they were confused about what a mocha is? It really just tasted like half regular coffee and half steamed milk. (I am generally easy going with mochas) We also ordered a tempeh sandwich and a veggie burrito. The veggie burrito: I guess the only thing missing from the burrito was flavor. For how it looked, packed full of fresh ingredients, it was pretty bland. And the salsa was insulting- a small dish of tomato puree with a dash of tobasco. I could have drank it straight, and I typically struggle with medium salsa. The Tempeh sandwich: The tempeh was not marinated, seasoned, dusted, sprinkled or allowed to touch anything that resembled flavor or moisture. it was dry and tasteless. There was some slaw in the sandwich that was decent. It came with a side of undressed field greens. Althought I have to say it came on some really good bread. We did have a cookie that was good. Peanut butter chunk. The atmosphere was okay. We started out indoors, but I felt like I was in a study hall. It was totally silent. I place no blame on the establishment for this. I didn't want to bother anybody, so we went out side which was much better. There were overhead radiant heaters that felt pretty good on a 50 degree day. But there was sand all over the table from the kids sand pit play area. I think they are great for using organic ingredients and being green, but overall, I have a real hard time giving this place a good review. For the price and atmosphere, it was just not that enjoyable. Sad, I really wanted to like it. Maybe one day I will try it again to see if it was just a bad day.

I am a fan, mostly of their location, the espresso, the local-ness, the organic-ness and the atmosphere. I don't mind crowded places so if you do don't go on a Saturday morning. I don't mind walking down a hallway to give my order. I have never had bad service or found the employees to be snooty. Quite the opposite really. Maybe people who complain about that should consider smiling and asking how their day is going! I dont love their croissants, a lil too bready for my liking and not flaky enough. xoxo

The people working there are awesome and the bread is always a hit. The potato doughnuts on the weekend are my personal fave. Cramped area where you order and pay is uncomfortable but in the summer the outdoor seating is really nice. They have a play area for kids which I think is a nice idea. Has a nice neighborhood-bakery feel.

Went here on a whim to see if I could get some of "those rolls" (you know, the ones they serve in Mazzi's). "They just got out of the oven" Yeah! They are fantastic! Got them home and we had some with a little butter. Also, I thought I would try some of their banana bread and while it was good, it seemed like it lacked bananas. The people behind the counter were very friendly and helpful and appeared as though they liked doing what they were doing. Lots of people coming in and out buying stuff and people eating outside under the covered dining area. A little cramped at the display/cash register area but do-able. Will be back for sure!

The Hideaway Bakery is a great little neighborhood bakery and coffee shop. There's a nice outdoor covered patio area with maybe a dozen tables as well as a separate indoor "fireside room" with 8 tables. Free WiFi is available and it's a great place to get a little work done on quiet days. On other days, the small inside room with no music is filled with people talking and noisy kids so it's kind of hit or miss. The bakery features a large wood-fired oven and they make some excellent breads, muffins, scones, coffee cakes, etc. The vegan options aren't bad with a vegan cranberry scone being the best offering IMO. There's vegan banana bread, bran muffin and cupcake. Of course many of the breads are also vegan and they make a grilled tempeh sandwich that's vegan. Their espresso is fairly good but not the best and it can vary a good bit depending on the barista. Still, because of the friendly and pleasant atmosphere it's one of my favorite coffee shops in town to meet a friend to talk for an hour or catch up on work with my laptop. I'd love to see the Hideaway Bakery expand their vegan baked good options or at least rotate different things on different days. Every time I see the sticky bun or berry coffee cake I wish they made a vegan version. It's not hard to do and nobody would miss the milk and eggs. I also wish they would play music in the fireside room. Some mellow jazz would fit the fireside atmosphere and provide a bit of an audio buffer.

I'm in here constantly picking up bread and other stuff. You really can't beat the bread here since it's made fresh without being sweetened like other places. Only occasional do I get a coffee or a sandwich. The staff is always helpful and quick. The owner always says hi. This place evolves over time. It was great when they put in the outdoor seating and then added a market on Saturday. This is really something I miss when I'm not in town.

Love the summer wood fired pizza, outdoor dining and the fact you can get some pretty good deals. I just avoid it when it's a busy weekend morning and too crowded and slow.

Delicious on a massive scale. I would volunteer here for a week just to eat everything on the menu. The samosa with potato lentils was epic, turkey provolone croissant, pesto mozzarella tomato grilled sandwich, good organic teas. The sweets look epic.

Mazzi's Pizza is as good at it gets. Period. I reserve this rating for fare that is exceptional. There are a few gems in Eugene. (Toshi's Ramen is among them, especially when Toshi's working the kitchen.) But Mazzi has something special here. The ingredients are local and prepared to perfection. We had sausage and roasted carrot pizza last night. I'll admit I wasn't thrilled that my wife had ordered pizza with carrots. But it was exquisite. The carrots were the best part, roasted, and anointed with just the right amount of what I think was chili oil. Portland's food scene overshadows Eugene, as it should. But Mazzi's Tuesday night pizza scene is a highlight. (One suggestion: Add Oakshire brews to the beverage options.)

All of the breads here are great! The coffee is a winner as well but the pastries are VERY BAD. The bread is a 5 star but I would skip all of the other baked goods. Pizza night is a winner too.

Hideaway Bakery's bread is as good as it gets in Eugene, and the people who sell their products at Saturday Market are nice, friendly, and generous. Food doesn't get much better than a freshly-baked pesto loaf on a sunny day...add some cheese and fruit and you have a great, simple meal, the ultimate portable feast. Alas, visiting Hideaway Bakery itself can be a disappointment. They tend to sell out of a lot of stuff, and I've found the counter help routinely indifferent and unhelpful, either unwilling or unable to answer any questions about the products. The worst thing is that place is full of flies when it's hot out, and they just leave the bread out and let the flies land on it, over and over again...this is the bread you get to select from. I remarked on this and the woman at the counter was like, oh yeah, flies, as if she had washed down a handful of Prozac with a couple of beers while smoking a joint. What the fuck?!? Plus, if you think I'm paying $6.50 for a loaf of bread that was covered in flies moments earlier handed to me by some spaced-out chick who is vigorously scratching her head, you really ARE high. Especially when your bakery is attached to Mazzi's, which is run by a very nice guy but leaves a lot to be desired from a culinary perspective. Nothing sucks the credibility out of a food purveyor like being stapled to one of the worst restaurants in Eugene. Hideaway needs to stick to the basics; when they step outside their core competency (bread), results vary widely. The muffins were good, the samosa-like thing was definitely not. Hideaway's magnificent hulking wood-fired oven is a wondrous thing, and sent visions of baked goods past, present, and future dancing through my head; it saddened me that the people working there did not share my enthusiasm, answer my questions, nor even acknowledge them with anything other than a laconic "yeah." I understand that the novelty must wear off if one is tasked with tending said oven all day, but still, I found their lack of faith disturbing. I guess if I were an uber-cool hipster I wouldn't get excited about an oven, not even a superlative one. Silly me. Still, the bread is really, really good - there's no getting around that. Buy it from the nice friendly people at Saturday Market and steer clear of the flies and the zombies at the bakery on East Amazon.

This place makes me want to have a kid to bring to the sandbox, while I had an excuse to sit and drink coffee with my delicious bread. Then the kid would make friends, and I could sit there for hours as they play. As it is, I do make plenty of time for Hideaway. I'm particularly found of their green olive levain loaf, and their food ethics. The woodburning oven using left over wood from local mills, and the veggies and fruit are grown at their farm just over the hill. I love that they host a farmer's market on Saturday, and I'm excited to try their Tuesday night pizza. Hideway contributes to the small bit of community we can feel in the spread out, not so walkable South Hills. Addendum: Oh my gosh - the pizza is amazing!!! The roasted veggie pizza we had was just about the best thing ever.

Wildly popular place to hang, whether inside or out. Very good pastries, bread, desserts. Coffee? Not usually very hot--- a cardinal sin. And the espresso drinks take too long--- no dedicated baristas.

Didn't try the scones but did have the "Hideaway Breakfast Sandwich." Scrambled eggs with leafy veggies and sauteed bell peppers and onions on a crusted seedy bagel with cream cheese sure does wonders with waking you up in the morning! There was a quaint farmers market outside as well with local organic produce and fruit roll-ups on sale. I did have to wait about 10 minutes for my b-fast sandwich to come out but didn't care so much.

Its more like 3.5 stars but I am rounding up here. We stopped by for some coffee as we were in the area. Tried a few of their pastries and although they were very good, it was the same crust on all of them - croissant like. I also had the veggie breakfast tacos. Very good but no cheese? Come on folks! Coffee was very good but ordering system is VERY funky and you feel like you are sitting in a parking lot with the cars being so near.

The quality of their coffee, baked goods, and bread is wowzas, and their breakfast menu selection and prices make this place a habit for me and many cool locals--especially parents of 1-5 year olds thankful for the sandbox.

Wonderful place to go get a loaf of organic, homemade bread or pastries. I came here with my slow food group once to bake bread. Fun experience! They have an oven that is toasty to warm up near in the colder months. In the warmer months, you can sit outside to enjoy a cup of chai, tea or coffee as the kids run around and play in the sand. Located in the back of Mazzi's, they also provide the bread for the restaraunt as well as Ambrosia.

Not so hideaway anymore. I discovered Hideaway last summer, it quickly became my sister, & my favorite place to spend a sunny Saturday morning. Our children would play in the sandbox while we slipped coffee and shared delectable pastries. I love the blueberry vessels, carrot agave muffins, the hazelnut pinwheels, I could go on. Everything I've eaten has been delicious. I have a had a disappointing sand-which or two though just because they don't put in enough ingredients to make them filling. Over the weekend I stopped by my favorite little spot, to find they had added a whole breakfast menu. I got a breakfast burrito, my friend got the potato & egg plate. Both dishes were really good. I also ordered a sticky bun, it was hard & dry I brought it back in the kitchen and they very sweetly replaced it with a much fresher tasting bun. I was really disappointed how busy they were. It is no longer my quite little spot. Which is good for them, but I think they need to make some adjustments. I could overhear several other tables complaining about how long the service was taking. The staff seemed to stay pretty friendly in spite of all the complaining. I do have to agree with some of the other reviewers about the "window service", they are often cold, and seem really bother if you ask them for anything.

This is one of my favorite places in Eugene. Great place for breakfast/brunch. I highly recommend the breakfast burrito (I get it with tofu). Their pastries are great and they have lots of interesting things to choose from. They also have excellent coffee. Prices are very reasonable too.

I love this place. The sandbox, cinnamon pastry rolls, scones, potato doughnuts, great mochas, all in a lovely outdoor/indoor setting. My kids adore the sandbox and sitting by the indoor fireplace on a cold day. This is a fantastic place to enjoy pastries and catch up with people you run into. I always have great conversations with people I know and people I've just met. Hideaway feels like a real neighborhood place with terrific local & organic food made by people who care. I often park my car here, run the Rexius path and reward myself with a treat! Bliss!

So I tried it again - last time I had mentioned the jostling and crowding, and was told that I should try again and maybe I'd be jostled by someone nice. This time I never made it in the door - the jostling in the parking lot was beyond manageable. It seems they've decided to take a third of their limited parking and turn it into an outdoor market. Since I couldn't back out due to the cars lined up behind me, I had to plead to try and weave my way through the stalls. Thank god they took pity on me. I'll skip that particular headache from now on.

Awesome everything. This place makes you understand why people eat scones. Here, done to perfection. My favorite is getting something still warm from the oven. If you get there too late for that, try the Farm berry turnovers with fruit from the owner's farm. The unassuming pain au raisin (bread with raisins) are stellar. The spelt loaf is so good, even my picky eater likes it. Started going to pizza nights, held from 5-7 on Tuesdays, weather permitting recently. Amazing personal size pizzas from the wood oven, just like they should be. I do fine with my no cow's milk variations, vegetarians and my kids all love it. Kid friendly and convivial.

A happy, kid friendly bakery with adult food - gorgeous breads and pastries, Tumi teas and espresso drinks served in those great big cups. At 9:30 on a Saturday morning we found seating for 6 inside, greeted several friends and found treats to share. (note - the line at the cash register is crowded. Move on outside to the pass through window after you make your order.) There were four or five farmer's market booths outside the bakery with the best of summer berries, tomatoes, fresh eggs, honey, lavender--enough to take home for a weekend feast.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.

Pizza

Pizza is a famous Italian dish savored around the world. The entire credit for the popularity of Pizza in the United States goes to the chain of pizzerias all over the country. While the base and the texture of Pizza remains same across the globe, it's the toppings that differs from country to country. In the United States, you will find the top pizzerias serving pizzas with the toppings of mainly beef, bacon, chicken, ham, and sausage for the non-vegetarians. Other than these famous meat options, Pizzas with veg toppings such as mushrooms, pepperonis, garlic, tomatoes, spinach, etc. are also famous in most restaurants in the United States.

Irrespective of your locality, you will find a variety of different restaurants in your cities offering pizzas of all different types. Pizza is hot favorite among people of all ages in the United States. A large size pizza is enough to feed a family of 3 or 4 at large. Pizza is also the most preferred food whenever a group of friends is hanging out together. Pizza gained popularity in the United States after the American soldiers stationed in Italy returned from World War II.

Over the years, different pizzerias in the United States have developed their own respective regional variations. Pizza gained popularity as the iconic dish in the United States in the second half of the 20th century. Whether you prefer thin or thick crust pizza, you can find a pizza of your preference at the best pizza restaurants in your city.
