I am not a food gourmet or snob. I like a variety of any food, as long as its "all you can eat", I'm easy. And i like Empire buffet. Most of the food is good! I love the wonton with cream cheese, the hot and sour soup, the spring rolls, the mushrooms, etc. Someone mentioned the "coconut" chicken: it is NOT coconut; it is indeed, awful awful mayonnaise. When i first tried it, i tried to tell the management that someone confused the white sauces, but no one spoke enough English to understand me...or they pretended not to. Why does it endure?? The service is usually poor, but overall, its fine for the price. I am looking forward to trying other buffets recommended here.

Not really very special, unless you're a Total Glutton. Easily 4 stars at their Tuesday lunch special price ($7?) Easily 2 stars at their regular price 15-25.

Go here when you have built up too much faith in humanity, guaranteed to bring you back down to reality. Disgusting food options that never change, barely worth the lunch price (much less the way-overpriced dinner, for which you can choose to try the crab legs). Gross atmosphere, dirty carpets. The french fries are ok, and they are close to campus... So there's that...

So, I took my 15 going on 16 year old grandson to Empire Buffet for lunch. It was his birthday. Their web site says your birthday meal is free. When it came time to pay the bill, they would NOT let him have the free meal. Their web site says, Bring ID.He had his student ID from a local high school, says he's a freshman, etc. However because there's no date on the ID his birthdate, they said no. Okay,so what kind of ID should a teenager take there to prove it's his birthday? Guess they thought we were lying. I don't know about anyone else but I do NOT carry a copy of my or his birth certificate around with me! Thanks for ruining his day!

This place is great on a slow weekday and has the usual greasy Chinese buffet fare: if you're looking for Americanized Chinese food that will feed a hungry crowd and maybe make you feel guilty for how much you ate afterward, this is a decent option. Located right near campus, the college crowd is probably their biggest financial supporter, so expect to see a lot of students on off hours.

No. The food is awful. I tried a wide variety of the offerings - and they do have a vast array of choices - when I went to lunch here and nothing was worth eating. The coconut chicken tasted like bad mayonnaise. The only thing that I found to me mildly edible was the mushrooms from the chicken with mushrooms. Everything else was really disgusting - loaded with goopy, flavorless sauce and piled with indiscriminate "meat". I'm trying to think of something nice to say about this restaurant. Maybe....the waitresses were friendly? Although by friendly I mean that the waitress took time out of her day to tell me how tall I am for a woman (I'm 5'8")...mmkay thanks.

I keep giving the Empire Buffet "another chance" but I think I'm finally done with that. There is a fairly good selection of dishes and in spite of others experience I think the food tastes okay. The sushi bar looked ok to me but I'm not a partaker so guess I can't really judge that one. The place could definitely use spiffing up - the carpet is coming apart and it's dark & dingy. But my biggest complaint - and always has been - most of the food is lukewarm at best, or cold. It is one of my pet peeves and it drives me crazy when a restaurant can't even get that right. This was my experience the first time I went there for lunch years ago and I'm just amazed (maybe appalled is a better word) that it hasn't improved at all. I'm done.

Came back today and the food was good but service was horrible. Our server never came back to our table he was to busy attending to the pretty girl a couple of tables away. My drink was empty long enough for all of the ice to melt. It was kind of ridiculous.

    (2)
  • Nick S.

It was horrible. I felt sick the rest of the day and most of the next day. The food didn't TASTE horrible, just kind of plain. Soft serve was gross somehow. Took forever to get refills.

Good food and great prices. All you can eat sushi, too. The employees refresh your drinks quickly and for a buffet... it's pretty clean.

You won't find a better buffet in the area. I've tried. The selection is better than most places you'll see, and most of the items are good. There are a few misses(the canned tuna sushi) but for the most part you won't be disappointed. Considering the price you can get a really great meal. Also worth noting is that the dessert section is so bad that it's almost endearing.

"Woohoo!" is right! When I bolted upright at 2 am, I knew that this place was special. Since I was a boy, I dreamed of one day becoming a human water rocket. Empire Buffet made this dream come true. Enough thrust was generated that my 250 lb body levitated 6-12 inches above the toilet seat for 6, 3 second bursts. Showing up 3 hours late for work was the "frosting on the cake". Empire Buffet was a true "white knuckle ride".

Each time I have eaten here the last four times, I (or my wife) have said, "This is it. No more". At least six years ago when China Sun on Gateway was taking a nose dive, we switched to Empire. But now it's taken a dive in quality. The food is -more often than not- cold. My wife was out of town so I let my kids talk me into taking them to Empire last night. Food wasn't AS cold as it has been, but the sushi was plain awful. The salmon was more brown than pink...the California rolls were too crunchy and didn't taste right. So bad that I gave all but the one I ate to my less picky son. Even my kids agreed this is probably the last time we eat here. Know of any other good Chinese buffets? Has China Sun picked their quality back up?

The food and the service in this place make think that the restaurant is a front for a less than legal business. There's no way possible that these people are serious about this place. All the food is cold, first of all. And most of it looks sad, anyway. The vegetable fried rice tasted like grease. Literally. After the first forkful slid down my throat, I realized that I had made a mistake. This food is less than mediocre. And yet, to call it horrible is to give it more credit than it deserves. The owners are definitely cashing in on American gluttony. Throw large quantities of disgusting food on display for consumption, rake in the cash. That place was packed. But I definitely will NOT be going back.

When is the last time you went to a Chinese buffet and it looked like a posh Las Vegas 5 star restaurant? Never! And this is no exception. There is a bunch of tasteless decorations, holes in the chairs, and the chef eating in the corner. But why do we go to Chinese buffets? To eat till we drop, not the service or ambiance. There is a great sushi selection and unlimited snow crab legs. These two items make up for the $11.99 price tag instantly. They of course have a lot of the normal Chinese and American fare. The only reason I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars is because the crab-rangoons were overly salty. Those should always be a perfect staple.

I tried a little bit of almost everything, and everything on my plate was disgusting - I didn't eat it! In order to leave not hungry, I ate some pudding & jello, the only food that didn't taste horrible!! The service was good, but that's not going to bring me back. This is a big NO!! YUCK

  • Rebecca F.

My favorite dish here was their Dr.Pepper. It's not terrible, but it's not great either. It was a little awkward when several items at the buffet were labelled incorrectly. The "chicken tenders" were actually popcorn shrimp, and the "garlic bread" was fried eggplants. I didn't even eat the one plate I made for myself. I doubt I'd ever come back here again. Not to mention the fact that I felt sick for about an hour or two afterwards. My best advice, spend less and go to Panda Express.

I used to hate this place because I just wanted sushi and as another reviewer put it, "you'd get the stink eye" from the staff for taking more than one piece. That was so true! They also used to just have one pair of tongs and watch each piece you took. But then one day I heard a teaching on a Sunday morning about "changing the atmosphere" when you go somewhere and this totally changed how I saw this and any other place I go. So instead of waiting for the stink eye and feeling guilty about eating their sushi we would verbalize our gratitude for the food, the sushi, the wait staff, etc. and we also got into a habit of tipping the sushi chef and tipping the wait staff more than usual. I don't know if it was the words of affirmation and/or the tips but the atmosphere changed. They started to know us and they treated us with kindness. The peanut chicken here is amazing! The Chinese food is Americanized, of course, and average. Lots of MSG there, which wasn't my favorite. I really just went there for the sushi and it was better at dinner than lunch. And after all the times we went there the sushi chefs got to know us and remember what we liked. That's some great service!

Typical Americanized Chinese buffet... I would go back. good service. $12 is kind of on the upper end, that is why I gave it a 3.

  • Roman S.

this is in my mind a typical chinese buffet.. lots of options (some variety so not exactly the same every night..) occasionally they have frog.. tastes like chicken not sure how "chinese" these dishes are but i like the peanut chicken a lot. it's about average in every way you can think a generic chinese buffet can be

  • Candra C.

Smelled good from the outside but the food is questionable. Gross pretty much sums it up. I had an upset stomach for 2 days after eating here. Be warned!

  • Andre P.

Not bad. About your standard Chinese buffet. Got there right when they opened so everything was fresh. Have lots of stuff if you have a kid who doesn't like a lot of Chinese food

  • Rat B.

I really like this buffet. I particularly recommend the hibachi chicken

It's hard to rate a chinese buffet because of a few different factors: Day that you go, time of day that you go, what they decide to put out. The food was decent, but no where near the best I've had. I actually was going to give this place 2 stars, but then I thought about the Chicken in Peanut sauce that I had which I really enjoyed quite a bit. The place seems clean, the service staff seemed polite. But the food was just so so.

Though it's not my favorite buffet that I've been to, it has it's bright spots. They have many of my favorite appetizers and entrees, made well enough. Service is generally pretty good. I would recommend going during lunch time (even though there is a pretty solid rush) to ensure all the food (most importantly the sushi) is fresh. Which brings me to the less desirable aspects. The vast majority of their sushi is California Roll inspired, meaning it contains avocado, which I am allergic to; leaving me very few options. Total let down, as a sushi lover. Also, if you're going to save room for dessert, many items are worth eating, but don't expect a nice cone on your way out, as they have recently down-graded their cones to thimble size. I'd say, if you're in the neighborhood, it's a worthwhile place to try at least once to see if you'd like it yourself. If you're picky about your buffet there are better places to go in the Eugene-Springfield area.

The Empire I think is instantly well liked if you've had legit Chinese food before, in all its greasy and deep-fried goodness hahaha. They have a nice seafood collection of shellfish, some deep fried in batter, others baked, or sauteed in sauces. The dessert counter tends to be ignored with reason, it doesn't look too appetizing. Not that it looks gross, it just looks boring and bland (sans the frosty machine) Although the sugared donuts in the regular counter area are pretty damn tasty! Sushi isn't the best, I don't recommend it. But the other entree options, soups, seafood, poultry, and stir fry are good. The service is very limited, usually only a waiter or two at attention. But I suppose since it's a buffet one should be able to handle their meal on their own. Yet when you want a drink at the bar or some non-alcoholic beverage, it's faster if you just get up and grab a waiter yourself than wait. The atmosphere is very busy and happy with families enjoying a good meal together, which makes your dining experience all the better. Overall, if you were looking for a good Chinese restaurant in eugene, I'd definitely have this on the list.

  • Bradley L.

In my opinion its just a run of the mill Chinese food source. The food is tolerable but uniqueness is not what they are striving for. They have sushi, salad, dessert bar. Not impressive however. On a good note, drink refills came quickly, and service was good.

  • Figaro A.

really good food and selections... has all your favorite chinese items that you'll find at a big-city chinese buffet for a small-town price. after the oregon bach festival, this is probably my favorite place in eugene to unwind & refuel :) it is adjacent to walking trails by the river, so you can stuff yourselves with chinese food and take a relaxing stroll in the woods afterwards.

I like Empire. They have many, many options to choose from including seafood, salad bar, and a small dessert bar. I recommend going when it is busier, as you will know the food is fresher. I particularly like the potstickers, the peanut chicken, the garlic shrimp, the egg rolls, the chicken skewers, and the sushi. Just like all buffet restaurants, they have some items that should be left off the buffet line such as the fries and garlic bread, sitting under a heat lamp does not help them one bit. Tuesday's lunch is $1 or so off the normal price, and boy does it get packed! Go on your birthday with a friend, and order 2 beverages, and your meal is free (bring id). They offer a stamp card for earning another meal if you are a frequent diner. Not fancy, just tasty, and the waitresses are always friendly, and unless the place is crowded, they remove dirty dishes fairly frequently and you can get refills on your soda.

  • Lori K.

Well, I'd hoped for much better quality. The variety is pretty good (especially if you like chicken), but the food was mediocre at best. Any time Sunday is the full dinner cost, and although $12 or so isn't going to break the bank, it was a lot of money for "just OK" food. I can see why the college crowd likes it. Most college kids had their plates heaped with crab legs and fried shrimp, so they probably made it worth it in volume. If you want good Chinese, skip this buffet.

  • Laurie P.

The service was not very good and the tables were greasy. It looked like they had a good selection of food, but when I started to eat I found that it didn't really matter much. I tried almost everything they had and it was almost all horrible. The only edible things I found were the spring rolls, egg flower soup, and sweet and sour chicken. The beef with broccoli wasn't bad. The beef was no good, but the broccoli and sauce tasted good. In the end I got sick and my stomach felt like it was going to explode. Not worth it at all. Bad food, costs too much, and you might get food poisoning. :(

Nothing at this place tastes quite right to me. The inside of this place and it's patrons all scream leper colony. Very inexpensive yes, but you do get what you pay for. Whoever tagged this place as a seafood restaurant should be ashamed!

  • Bradley E.

Really enjoyed the fresh sushi made right there in the front. The sushi was fresh and tasty - better than most buffets I have been to. Good selections of Americanized Asian food. Lunch was $7.99 and a great price for the selections offered. I especially enjoyed the Coconut Chicken. I would go back again if I was in town.

  • Jay T.

Standard chinese buffet. The sushi was just ok. All of it was really just ok. The price was average at $8.00 for lunch. The only reason I would go back is that there just doesn't seem to be anything better in Eugene in regards to Chinese food.

    (3)
  • Jenn C.

Good selection of decent food-although nothing special. The sushi is limited and if you take more than a piece or two you'll get stink eye from the employees. Dessert is lacking to say the least, but all in all its a cheap way to get a belly full ok food.

I moved from southern Spain to Eugene at the end of 2006, and my rediscovery of chinese buffet restaurants was like a sunray in the NW gray skies!! I'd never seen a chinese buffet before and never knew they existed but of course, I was out of the country for many decades! Since moving to Eugene I tried quite a few of the chinese restaurants - heck, you can't go wrong with chinese food: tasty, healthy, cooked just for you, and cheap!!! I found Empire quite by accident and soon after, it became a regular meeting & eating place for me and friends. During the day they have a bit of everything to suit everyone's taste, and being in Eugene, appealing also to vegans and vegetarians alike! Come evening, the great menu includes the welcome addition of salmon, king crab legs and clams/mussels!! I fell in love with this place!! There's a great selection of all types of dishes: seafood, meats (chicken, beef), veggies, and I cannot forget my favorite item there: their string beans... Upon entering, you're taken to a table and your drinks are requested (not included in the meal price), then go to the buffet area to pick up a dish and get your food from the ample selection... I would also eat a few of the finger-food while gathering up my food. There's even a good selection of desserts!! If you go there, the small pictures of the interior were taken and given to them by yours truly!!! On your birthday, your meal is free (ID-proof required); how cool is that? I've seen everyone from students to whole families of all colors and sizes eat here... Since moving from Eugene, I' ve been back twice on my short trips. Wish there were such a place in SF!!! Oh, the soups are HOT (very) and tasty!!

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
