Best sushi place around! Friendly staff and always willing to serve us even when they're near closing time. Their traditional rolls are super pure My boyfriend and I come here like 5 times a week. We recommend the Bachelor roll and Yuzu Sunset, Spicy Albacore and their Mackerel Nigiri is off the chizain y'all Our server's name was Moon K (Judy)-- like really? Could this place get more awesome?? There's an awesome fire pit to lounge by outside after you feast too

Just had an awesome bento box lunch with my Dad. Hard to choose with so many options! Also love their small patio that I can have my little dog with me. Service was nice and attentive and food was perfect!

The sushi was tasty, seemed fresh, and filling. Also, the restaurant and bathrooms were clean and modern. The serves was less than enjoyable but the chefs were attentive (we sat at the bar).

The food here Was good and the price was also decent. I definitely enjoyed their rolls and it`s a lot better than the mio sushi at the old mill district. The service was slow but I would come back because it's the best sushi I can find so far. They had like 10 people working and half of the staff was just standing around. I could understand the service being slow if there was also 4 people working But that wasn't the case. There was 5 sushi chef! How do you have 5 and still be so slow? So I ended up getting the hawaiin roll which was really good and another one I can't remember. My friend got the tempura roll and a tuna one that I did enjoy. The sushi is great I just wish their services was just as good.

All time fave!!! Love the food and service is great! I always get the Avacado roll and jazz it up with yummy veggies. My hubby gets the Brother John. It's consistently good and priced well. Miso is fab too!

Went with my family on a trip to Sunriver, the food tasted great! Nothing wrong in that category. Went before when it was Mio Sushi, definitely a different look, but the menu was still the same. I have to dock a point for the amount of rice in the rolls, but the amount of sushi in it kept it, "acceptable". The cooks seemed very polite, and the service was great! The next time I'm in town, I'll definitely go back, the location is nice and I like that it's local. Makes me feel more appreciated for some reason. All in all, the food is great, it's cheap and the service is exceptional. I really hope they improve the rice problem, and if they do, I'd give it 5 stars, every time. Edit: Went again recently, the rice was better! Dunno if they've noticed what we've been writing here or not, but the rice wasn't as dry and it didn't overwhelm my mouth. 5 stars*****

We LOVE Shinsei Sushi! Since they transfered away from Mio Sushi, we've noticed the prices come down. The sushi is ALWAYS good, and always fresh and the servers are always on their A game.. I give Shinsei two thumbs up.... A must for Sushi in Bend!

I've finally realized I am not going to get sushi like I did in the OC. This place actually has decent sushi for Bend. They have all the rolls you could want and they don't skimp on the fish. The jalapeno poppers with real crab are delicious. I appreciate when sushi bars actually use real crab. The manager told us they ship in fresh fish every other day which was impressive considering we live in Central Oregon. I guess I assumed it was all previously frozen. I noticed they have great customer service. Everyone who helped us was very polite and ready to answer all our questions. Also, The owner also made it a point to ask if everything was okay during our meal and we sincerely appreciated how he cared about his customers experience. We will definitely be going back.

Great sushi for a great price!! Service was good and whole place is very friendly. Will definitely be back!

Service personnel need training. We asked to have an appetizer served first "so hat the little kid with us would have something to munch on". Here we sit 20 minutes later, and still no food...

Went in to get a quick snack. We started with the miso soup which was perfect for a rainy day. Then we decided to get a few different rolls and they were made to perfection. Waitress could have definitely been much more attentive but all in all excellent place. Before we were about to walk out all of the Chiefs said good bye and have a good day which was so nice of them. Definitely will be back for some more soup and sushi.

This is our go-to spot when shopping at the Cascade Village Shopping Center. This is a great place to get sushi with the kids. Reasonable, good selection, timely and friendly service, never a wait. We always try something off the special board and have a couple of favorites on the menu including the calamari, spicy spider role and shrimp tempura roll. I also like the goma salad. They have all of the traditional favorites, California roll, Rainbow roll, etc. I have never had the sashimi here, always the nigiri. Bento box meals look popular, I see lots of people at neighboring tables having these. Kids are sold on the mango iced tea that comes with one free refill. Their only ongoing question is why do they use the skinny straws instead of fatter ones where you could actually get the mango pieces up through the straw. It's a logistic issue for them, certainly not the end of the world. If you want a fancy sushi dinner, this is not the place, try Five Fusion or Kanpai. But if you are in the hood and need lunch it's worth a try.

I have eaten at this place since it opened. It has changed names a few times since. The other day my wife and daughter stopped in for lunch. They brought me home a Spider Roll and Bend Roll. When I was eating it I bit into clear shards of glass. I spit them back into their plastic take out container. I immediately called the restaurant and spoke to the manager, thinking their are possibly other people eating glass. I told her I would bring the glass in and show them. She did mention reimbursing us, but when I returned and showed them the glass the chef who came out and was very defensive and down right rude. He never even made an attempt of resolving the issue in a professional manner what so ever, no mention of even a refund. All I have to say is that is the first time in my life that I have chewed on broken glass and this is one sushi establishment I will never return to. My advice is eat here at your own risk.

Went here for lunch and costumer service was amazing. However the food was not good. I got a spicy tuna roll and shrimp tempura roll, my usual order at any sushi place. The spicy tuna was mostly rice, with some tuna and a weird chili paste. I had to dissect a roll to even find where the 'spicy' came from. No flavor, not good. The shrimp tempura was even worse.... completely soggy. No crunch, just soggy fried tempura. So disappointed for the amount of money I paid.

I was very pleased with the quality of the rolls I had and with the service. It's conveniently located close to lots of stores and off the main highway. Will definitely revisit.

  • Mel B.

I didn't care for this place when it was Mio but it has gotten signifcantly better! The prices are still good and now so are the rolls. The Bend Roll is delicious. My biggest compliant is that they are closed in the middle of the afternoon. (But so it every other sushi restaurant in Bend.) If you check in on yelp you get a free CA Roll or order of Gyoza

  • G.L. T.

Went for lunch. The Yaki U-Don (mixed with vegetables) were slimy - the texture was just horrid. There were VERY few vegetables in the Yaki U-Don. Perhaps they forgot to mix them in? Roll Combo B: California roll, spicy tuna roll, shrimp tempura roll... it was all flavorless. We've had supermarket sushi with more flavor.

We had to wait 15 minutes to be seated, which wasn't terrible. The staff had okay customer service. It was right before they closed, so I understand after an 8 hour shift that they weren't on top of their game. However, I was impressed by a waitress who wasn't ours, who came over and said she would grab me another drink. Most waiters don't pay attention to tables besides their own. The food was great for the price. I was able to make a special order with ease. My wife and I will definitely be going back for sushi in the future.

Our Favorite Sushi in Bend. Always super high quality fresh fish. Affordable prices for such good ingredients. They drive it over from the Fish Markets in Portland every other day. Never had a bad meal at this restaurant. Family friendly and always good attitudes from the wait staff.

Great sushi!! However the service isn't great at all. Particularly from the two Asian servers. I come here a lot because the food is really good. I just wish the service was better.

So today, April 3rd @ 7:32 my mother, brother and I had came into Shinsei for dinner. As we approached we saw how busy it was. Decided it was worth the wait because of the great food! As we proceeded to come in, it was a little crowded. One of the associates working up front asked how many people we had. Then walked off. Without letting us know anything. We had no clue we were suppose to give a name to be seated. We waited 15 mins longer, while waiting more people began to come in... And some even were being seated before us. That's when my brother had went up to the counter, a younger blonde girl asked how many people and for his name. We were finally seated @ 8:03. I completely understand taking care of your customers and most importantly taking care of the customers who were there first. But to have that much MISCOMMUNICATION and that much DYSFUNCTION going on is never good for your consumers! Not only is it rude but your consumer's are left in the dust to figure it out on there own. Coming from someone who works in service, this would be bad customer service. And that's always distasteful. I would like to finish off with saying despite what happened tonight. The food was amazing thank you!!

We ordered Ramen and curry today. Curry is so so. Seriously to say it still has lots of space to improve. As to Ramen, we respond that the noodles taste like "instant noodles" actually it is really instant noodles. Although they didn't charge that Ramen finally, we cannot accept what reasons they explain. They told the Japanese Ramen noodles in the market tastes not good (so instant noodles will be better?). The worst is they mentioned there are some good dishes and not good dishes in each restaurant. They are good at Sushi. And we shall ask for their recommendation before ordering.

Sushi in bend is ridiculously expensive. I don't know why because I took a sushi class and the instructor said all the sushi restaurants in Bend get their fish from the same company from the coast so all the sushi places are selling the same fish. Shinsei is probably the most affordable sushi places in Bend. They also have a great happy hour and specials. The restaurant is nice and you can always get a table. Friendly and attentive staff.

Ive never had a bad meal here. I love the Bento box! I love the tea. My husband loves the sushi and my kids loved their kids bentos. .service seems good every time we come...sushi looks fresh and you are always greeted at the door! Good place!

This place is not easy to find if you are a "ferener", also known as a tourist or out-of-towner. Alas, tis what I am, and so I sometimes struggle to find places that the great Goddess of GPS - to whom I have contemplated sacrificing my children on occasion - assures me are RIGHT THERE. Uhhhhh .... no. To whit, this place is inside a rabbit warren shopping center called Cascade Village, which is off Rt 97 in north Bend, behind the JC Penny, across the street from Vision Works, and next to a frozen yogurt place called "Yo Wild". Yo. Once there, I found the food to be excellent. I had a couple of lunch special items ... poke salad and a mango roll. Both were really good, and very fresh. Highly recommended. Moderately expensive, so a good but not great value.

Shinsei Sushi is bar-none the best sushi in Bend. I've been to a lot of sushi places and this place is both extremely friendly and excellent food. The experience is authentic with great atmosphere. I've visited most of if not all of the sushi places in Bend and this one takes the cake. If you're visiting Bend or are just looking for a classy dining experience Shinsei can more than oblige.

    (5)
  • Sarah T.

I used to love this place, but the last few visits, service has been very slow, even in an obviously slow day. Sushi is still ok, but I'm going to go somewhere without such a wait.

  • Joshua W.

I went here for some lunch with the family. It was very clean with a nice decor. The bento boxes were pretty good, but some of the food was a little bland. I would eat here in a pinch if I was dying at that moment for sushi and was walking buy. Otherwise, I'd just pass and hit sushi downtown.

    (3)
  • Leah K.

If I could, I would eat sushi for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Shinsei has a casual, bright atmosphere and the service is incredible. The employees work hard and are very attentive to customers. The quality of the fish is fresh and the quantity is a good portion... not minuscule like some sushi places. We had the nigiri combo and the slices were cut thick and large! Udon is delicious and so were the rolls. Happy to be supporting an ex-franchise, now local and independent business! Definitely coming back to visit next time I'm in Bend.

Food very good. Waitress best I've had. She knew the menu in and out, and all preparations. 2nd time we've eaten here and had same waitress, very pleasant and willing to take care of any needs. No rush. Excellent Yakisoba and pot stickers too. highly recommened

This is our 'go to' in Bend. It's not fine dining sushi, but the rolls are really good, the price is fair and the staff is knowledgable and accommodating.

Rating is only for the food, not the service. The food here was definitely worth the visit being from out of town. What was really disappointing was the service. We were seated pretty quickly and had drinks served initially. Then it all went down hill from there......no one returned to ask if we needed refills on drinks etc. We ordered 3 bowls of udon and 3 sushi rolls to start. It took over 45 minutes to get the food with multiple inquiries around what was happening. This was on a weekday eve at around 6pm and not overwhelming odds customer wise. They felt bad when the bill came and provided a 10% discount but I would rather have been charged an extra 10% and gotten better service. This would have been a 5 star rating had it not been for the service....terribly disappointing for a first visit.

I have given this restaurant about a dozen opportunities to give me something good to say about their food, but it just hasn't happened. The fish served here has to be the most un-flavorful sushi I have ever had and I have been enjoying sushi for 30 plus years. The wait staff is totally untrained on the menu and can't even tell you which rolls they are serving. The absolute worst part of all my experience here is when I ordered albacore sushi (at a premium price per piece) and was served regular ol tuna then told by the waitress "no no it's albacore". Albacore does not look or taste anything like that did, so please don't insult me by trying to convince me otherwise just so you can sell one fish in place of another. Wont be back.

We're from out of town and decided to try this place out since sushi is our favorite. It took us a while to decide what to get and the waitress was really patient (thus the 2 stars). We settled on a few basic rolls, sashimi, and a teriyaki plate. The food was disappointingly bland... definitely would not return.

Been to this place during the holiday break. Location is very convenient inside a shopping mall. But the place is much better than you would expect from shopping mall restaurant. Creative sushi menu, great service.

Shrugs. I enjoyed it and I'm feeling generous, so 3 stars. On a Sunday evening at 7, there were a few tables, service was friendly and attentive and the food didn't take too long to come out. BD ordered chicken yakitori which came with a salad with ginger dressing and miso soup. He also ordered a beef dish that came out on a sizzling plate, it came with rice and broccoli. He seemed to like everything, the rice bowl was a bit small though, he had to ask for extra. My sushi was nice. I had a baked crab and salmon one, a fried salmon, cream cheese and avocado one, and unagi hand rolls (eel, rice, avocado, lettuce). The portion was nice, the price wasn't too bad. However, I didn't have anything raw so I can't comment on the quality of the fish other than that when cooked, mine tasted pretty good. I didn't think my rice was old tasting or that there was too much of it in the rolls. If you check in, you get a free gyoza appetizer, nice touch! It's not the best sushi I've ever had but it definitely hit the spot. There are a couple of other places I want to check out first before I return to Shinsei.

    (3)
  • Alicia W.

My husband and I went here for lunch and sadly were disappointed. We ordered a tempura appetizer and 4 sushi rolls. The tempura wasn't fully cooked (pale and soggy). And none of the sushi rolls had flavor. Compared to our other sushi experiences in Bend, this has been our least favorite. Shinsei needs to step up their game.

This was our first visit to Shinsei. The quality and amount of food was very good and we plan on returning often to the restaurant. The decor is acceptable but a bit spartan, the service was good with a friendly waitress. Regards

Just ate at Shinsei. It was garbage. I have dined at this restaurant for at least four years. It was good when it used to be Mio; it changed a little over a year ago to shinsei and has gotten progressively worse since that time. I had stale fish, tough and stinky sea weed wraps and hard rice on every roll. I don't know why I finished the meal, I think I am starting to get a little sick to my stomach and actually put a piece of gum in my mouth right after leaving because my mouth tasted like rotten fish. I even told the waitress in a very kind way. She said she would tell the sushi chefs. She still charged me full price. The chefs looked grungy and disinterested in their work, not like the usual clean and happy sushi chefs found in good sushi restaurants.

    (1)
  • Melinda C.

This place has good quality sushi at reasonable prices. The fish is always fresh and you get a good quantitiy of food. I typically get the Sunriver and Sunshine rolls (formerly Aloha and Sunset rolls) and my husband gets the sashimi combo. I usually order both rolls without the crab because I think they put too much mayo in the crab mixture. My only other complaint is that they put too much rice in the rolls, which makes it difficult to eat a piece in one bite. The sashimi combo is great because the quality of the fish is excellent and the pieces of fish are generously sized. This was formerly a Mio Sushi franchise. They've split with the franchise and it's the same owners and staff. All the names of their menu items have changed, so be sure to get a new takeout menu if that's the primary way you order. Also, it's definitely not fast food, so if you're short on time you may want save this place for another day.

I want to like this place as it's closer to home and reasonably priced... however it proves that great sushi can't be had at reasonable prices yet in bend. This is good sushi, fish is fresh and rolls are well prepared. This price point would get you mind blowing sushi in many other places. It is as good as you'll find here in bend without heading to 5 spice and doubling your bill (which is totally worth it btw). I'll probably be back, but I'll probably whine about it.

After camping for 7 days, we made it to our next stop, Oregon. Finally got a hotel room and the bf and I just craved for sushi. We found this sushi place on our way to a shop and checked yelp and only found 1 review. I saw that if you checked in, you get a free California roll, so decided to check it out. You ever get the feeling that if you are eating a specific cuisine, and it's not being served or made by the type of people, it loses some authenticity? Well, that's the case with Shinsei. Saw 3 sushi chefs and only 1 was Asian, it just felt a bit strange. Anyhoo, moving on, the decorations and the vibe of the restaurant feels nice. Saw the menu and had a variety of Japanese food. I ordered the combo 1, which came with 7 pieces of nigiri sushi and a choice in roll. I love their presentation! It came in a little boat! How cool is that?? We also ordered the Philly roll but I was a bit disappointed due to how little cream cheese they put in. The sushi taste fresh but expect lots of rice! I was super full after eating 4 pieces of sushi! I cut off half the amount of rice for the rest, that would be the perfect proportion. Moving on to their service, it's good! They don't bug the shit out of you but made sure your water is filled. After this long review, just to sum it up, took off 1 star for authenticity and 1 star for the massive amount of rice. Would I come back? I wouldn't mind.

We went here yesterday because we really needed some sushi. Our sushi was delicious. Really some of the best we've had in bend. But the water was terrible. I don't think they've ever cleaned their ice machine. And it grossed us out a bit. So we ordered some tea. The tea was also terrible. We were very happy with the sushi but not stoked overall.

    (3)
  • Obi W.

The sushi is as good as any in Bend but without being pretentious like many of its more expensive competitors. Service is always friendly but rarely fast. EDIT - service is now consistently friendly AND fast.

Their heater must be broken. Its about 55 degrees in here. Rice was not fresh on my roll. Come here if you're into thermogenesis.

  • Vincent F.

Very fresh sushi at a great value! It's hard for me to get past the sashimi combo and an order of uni. Sometimes I get to try what the wife orders. The happy hour looks like an awesome deal, but hitting the weekday window of 4-5 is pretty tough. Perhaps schedule a company meeting? Only downside is you smell like the deep fryer when you leave. The grease sticks to your clothes. Maybe consider upgrading the exhaust fans or add make up air in the dining area to help.

Shinsei Sushi has not disappointed me. Always seem to have fresh sashimi and their nigiri always has little rice and large fish!!! Make sure you check-in with Yelp to get a free appetizer :)

Great price with excellent food. Remember sushi is not fast food. Order some appetizers. The tempura and gyosa are great. Try the Korean raspberry wine Awesome. Remember that sushi is not fast food.

Being a Seattle guy i was absolutely Blown away by the quality and freshness of the sushi here. Ordered the salmon and tuna donburi and it was amazing. The fish was expertly sliced to a perfect thickness and flesh pattern. This will be a must go if I'm ever back in Bend.

My wife and I eat here frequently and have always had the best luck. It is our favorite place in central Oregon to go out by far! The staff is amazing and the head chef always remembers us. Our favorite rolls are the Pine Martin, volcano, rainbow! The nigiri is awesome and a very good sized portion. Probably the most amazing thing you will try though is the goma salad with crab (add whatever fish you want) It is very affordable top grade sushi that will not disappoint!

When we were camping at Wikiup I was craving sushi...tough to get while around a campfire. On our way back we called one other sushi place and couldn't get through except to their dial up internet? So we were driving around looking for fast food when we went through cascade village and saw Shinsei Sushi. We parked and brought the puppy to the outdoor tables. Since I am a picky pseudo sushi eater, and my boyfriend will eat any sushi we saw the Boat combo B, california rolls and tempura rolls for me and spicy tuna for him. For $13. We did the math and for the same amount of sushi from our favorite sushi place in Tigard,we would have spent more! This wasn't the most amazing tasting sushi, but it hit the spot and now am going to stop there every time we just HAVE to go through Bend. =)

I've got a group of girlfriends who share my love of sushi and we love to get together to eat often. Shinsei is a place with great food that doesn't break the bank, so this is our sushi restaurant of choice in Bend, Oregon. We do visit other sushi spots now and then, but Shinsei has the largest rolls out of all of them. It's great to pick up a roll and not have it fall apart because it was cut too small. Thanks Shinsei for filling us up for a price that we can afford to fill up more often. Check the sushi combos in the back of the menu...two or three roll combinations that comes with miso soup. For a great deal and a little bit of everything, try a bento combination. Last thing to note, we are always greeted quickly even during the few times we have to wait to be seated, have great service from the staff who always says yes to special orders, and the whole sushi prep line says thanks and goodbye to us when we head out. Huge thumbs up in my book!

Good stop for travelers, easy to find on hwy 97. Sushi good, generous with rice but you provide the wasabi. Better than just avg.! Very family-friendly, can get a little noisy. Staff good, and friendly. Whenever we drive thru Bend, we stop here.

Ambience decent, took a long time for the food to arrive with only three or four customers there. Waitress was polite, food C+. Too much rice in the rolls. I wouldn't count them out, worth one more try.

My favorite sushi restaurant in Bend. Sushi is tasty and well priced. I highly recommend the Salmon Pizza - it is amazing! Great atmosphere, friendly service, kid friendly (I always see a lot of young families here). Check in with yelp and you get either a free gyoza appetizer or CA roll.

Good stop for travelers, easy to find on hwy 97. Sushi good, generous with rice but you provide the wasabi. Better than just avg.! Very family-friendly, can get a little noisy. Staff good, and friendly. Whenever we drive thru Bend, we stop here.

Go there. I'm Herron business. Second week in a row. Fresh sushi. Very good. The bento selections are great for those that don't want fish, like yakisoba beef or chicken, etc.. You'll be happy here.

Shinsei Sushi has not disappointed me. Always seem to have fresh sashimi and their nigiri always has little rice and large fish!!! Make sure you check-in with Yelp to get a free appetizer :)

I went here for some lunch with the family. It was very clean with a nice decor. The bento boxes were pretty good, but some of the food was a little bland. I would eat here in a pinch if I was dying at that moment for sushi and was walking buy. Otherwise, I'd just pass and hit sushi downtown.

We LOVE Shinsei Sushi! Since they transfered away from Mio Sushi, we've noticed the prices come down. The sushi is ALWAYS good, and always fresh and the servers are always on their A game.. I give Shinsei two thumbs up.... A must for Sushi in Bend!

Good place!

We're from out of town and decided to try this place out since sushi is our favorite. It took us a while to decide what to get and the waitress was really patient (thus the 2 stars). We settled on a few basic rolls, sashimi, and a teriyaki plate. The food was disappointingly bland... definitely would not return.

The sushi is as good as any in Bend but without being pretentious like many of its more expensive competitors. Service is always friendly but rarely fast. EDIT - service is now consistently friendly AND fast.
