Location - hard to find! look out for the small Wild Horse street sign Exterior - looks old and nondescript, a very good sign Interior - like the exterior, good cause the food should do the talking. Meat - while there was a nice crust, all the meat that we tried was bland, and a bit on the dry side. Beans - a bit too sweet... but otherwise tangy and like how good beans should be Bread - just a regular bun Prices - under $10 for two meats, two sides, and sweet tea Sauce - thankfully it was good, because it was really necessary Wild Horse Mountain BBQ was featured in the state's Discover Oklahoma Dining Guide so I had high expectations. I got to say that it just didn't do it for me. Maybe I ordered the wrong stuff, or maybe it's just not to my tastes... either way, this place is too hard to find and out of the way to deserve a second trip.

This is the real deal. I love it all. My wife took me here and remembers her grandfather bringing her here when it had dirt floors. Far out!

There's really not many choices in Sallisaw, OK for eating choices so I can see why the locals think this restaurant is good. Even if you're never eaten bbq before, you would expect people to know the difference between a dry piece of meat vs. a moist, tender piece of meat. I guess the people in Sallisaw don't know the difference because the pork rib is dry and almost tasteless. ANYONE who states this bbq is better than anything outside of Sallisaw is smoking meth.

Ahhhh, found it with a little help from the folks at KOA which IS across from the airport on 59 South of I-40 at Exit 308. From KOA go about 2 miles the road will divide and soon after the divide turn left, there's a sign "Wild Horse Mountain BBQ" after you make the turn. Go 1/4 mile and it's on your left BUT get there before 8 PM or the doors are locked. :-( We never did get a taste...arrived too late. Next time it's now correctly in my GPS.

Honestly, this place was horrible. I don't enjoy writing bad reviews but I wouldn't even call this BBQ. It didn't smell nor taste anything close to what one would call "finger lickin' good". Driving through on the way to California we decided the reviews were enough to try it. Unfortunately, growing up in the south, I found this place to be far less appealing than the locals. Long story short, I'd pass. We both decided we would have rather had McDonald's.

WHMB is a must-do destination whenever I'm in Oklahoma visiting the In-Laws. It's a bit out of the way, and like user Joe L., I warn against using yelp to navigate there as you'll end up miles off course. But if you can find it, you'll be rewarded with some of the tastiest, smokiest ribs in the Midwest! I always order the pork ribs, which have a crisp, flavorful crust over juicy, tender meat. I'm so obsessed with their pork ribs I haven't even tried the beef ribs. All the plates come with a helping of baked beans and a plain-jane hamburger bun. You get a little plastic spoon on your paper plate for the beans, but no fork or knife because you'll be eating with your hands. Casual! Unfortunately I can't give it five stars because the last time I was there, the meat was a little tough and dry, but still as delicious as ever. I hope they get that important detail worked out by the next time I come through!

Wild Horse BBQ is bit out of the way off of I-40 but it is completely worth it. I eat here every time I am in town. The food is amazing.

Without a doubt the best bbq I've ever had! I grew up close to here and everything's just got better and better the last 20 years. Seriously thee best bbq in the southern mid west. Be sure to get some sweet tea!

I wish Texas BBQ was this good. The best pork ribs and beans I've ever had. Hot sauce is a star too.

While visiting family in Sallisaw, we went here for lunch. I had the pork rib dinner and the pork was very tender and the beans were excellent. My wife had the BBQ sandwich and it was also excellent. This is easily the best place to eat in Sallisaw, and some of the best BBQ we have ever had. We highly recommend eating here.

  • Andy C.

Wow! Probably the best pork ribs I've ever had. Delicious. The beans were half of the meal and were cooked to perfection. Mild BBQ sauce was great, complete with shredded bits of chopped brisket and just the right amount of heat. The atmosphere is awesome, so 'Merica. I sat under a small print of Charlie Russell's famous painting "Camp Cook's Troubles" for some great reason it was hanging next to a photograph of an Apache helicopter. Haha The way they cut the ribs is so unique, the smoked country style ribs are Oklahoma's true BBQ identity. "NAMP #423 is a country style rib. According to the technical definition, these ribs are made from the rib end of the loin usually with 4 or 5 rib bones. The rib end is then cut exposing all the lean meat and cut into pieces between the bone. They are very meaty and an excellent value for the price..."

Just ate here. Was once here at least 10 years ago and I remembered it being some of the best barbecue I had ever had. Unfortunately, it did not meet my expectations this time. The service was great but the bathroom was pretty dirty. I chose to eat the combo beef and pork rib dinner. The sliced beef was pretty good but the pork ribs were a little dryer than what I had hoped. The portion size was quite large though which was nice. Overall I know this place probably deserves more stars however they just failed to deliver the same exceptional barbecue that I knew them to have.

Great Barbque. Family tradition for over 40 years. Directions has it located north of Sallisaw, but that is incorrect. The resturant is located just off of 59 south of Sallisaw, on a side road to the east of 59.

The best BBQ around. Get the rib dinner if your really hungry. THe med bbq sandwhich is the bomb!

What can I say about this landmark restaurant. I have been coming here every summer since it opened in the 60s.. I knew I had come home when I saw the building and smelled the aroma of barbecue. You have to try everything from the well perfectly seasoned beef ( sliced , slab or ribs ). Cause it all is the bomb. Then you have to get the beans which are sweet with little flakes of beef. Then the pickles and peppers if you don't get these your forgetting a part of the meal and everyone will look at you funny. To accompany this great meal they have sweet tea. Which everyone knows is the nectar of the gods! God I wish I was home!!!

  • Sunny S.

Terrible. Cheap meat with cheap bun. Brisket was tasteless , dry masked with bad sauce. Sorry but even tennessee beef brisket was better. I thought being closer to Texas, the state famous for great brisket, this would be better but NOPE! No tasty crispy brisket edges. Just a tasteless meal that was expensive for the low quality food you get. I would go elsewhere. I dont care about ambience if the food suffers.

It's a 5. We stopped by this place based on positive reviews during a trip cross country. OK is famous for its BBQ and for good reason; this stuff was quite simply excellent. I had the ribs/sliced bbq combo. It only came with 1 rib. However, the rib had a tenderloin filet attached to it!! I have never had a rib like that, I am assuming they have them custom cut. Cooked perfectly and seasoned excellent. Served with a BBQ sauced that comes in mild-med-hot, that has something like chow-chow mixed in it, this was the BOMB! The sliced pork was incredible too, tender and lean, and amazing with the sauce. The best part of the entire meal, as many reviewers list, is the baked beans on the side. THE BEST BAKED BEANS I HAVE EVER HAD. You have to try these if you are anywhere near this place!

  • Glenn G.

Had my first meal there 6/4/10 after hearing about it for years. All the reviews were correct, the food here is great! I had the beef platter: chopped brisket with bun, beans, a portion of nicely spicy medium sauce, jalapeño and pickle spear, all for just $9. Excellent!

I've been coming here since I was a kid. Don't know if it is the same people, but I'm 53 yrs old now and still make it when I'm visiting Oklahoma. Love it. The bbq is great. Good value. Reasonably priced. I love it HOT. Great job guys and gals. Thank you.

I LOVE Wildhorse Mountain! The BBQ is awesome. This will always and forever be "Hubert's" and I HOPE will always remain under the ownership of this family, whose father opened up was just a dirty little shack with a smoker in the back.

Warning!!!!! Do not use yelp to navigate to this restaurant. It is nowhere near the destination marked on the map. Search for White Horse Estates in Sallisaw, OK. The estates are on the west side of hwy 59, and the restaurant is directly across hwy 59 on the east side (look for the white sign - look close, as it is not the easiest to see). OK....now that the directions are taken care of, time to get to the meat of the review (pun intended). Outside - rustic, good-sized restaurant sitting up on the side of a hill. Plenty of parking, and truck/trailer accessible. Inside - Very spacious and properly decorated restaurant with a main (coffee shop style) dining area. It, also, has 2 semi-private dining areas perfect for family style or small party dining (see pictures). Food - The modest menu is more than adequate. Consisting of pork ribs and beef slow smoked to perfection. The smoke ring and mahogany color is the first clue that you about to taste something amazing. The only reason I dropped a star, is that they use absolutely no seasoning at all. Trust me..... it only needs a little salt, and I know how to use a salt shaker. Any other seasonings would have detracted from the beautiful and clean smoke flavor. It is not only tasty, but tender and moist. The only other choice is if you want beans. Get them!!! They are fabulous. The perfect balance of sweet, savory, smoke, and heat. It is definitely worth making a trip here if you are anywhere in the Oklahoma/Arkansas area.
