Looks are deceiving! Almost didn't stop because the outside was worn down. I'm glad we did. Wife said her well done Filet mignon was the best she ever had and my Ny stripe was pretty good as well. Will stop again should we be passing through again.

We went here for our 45 th Anniversary. Wanted to go somewhere intimate and local. What a wonderful choice, everyone was very friendly and the Ribeyes we had were wonderful. It was great that the owner/chef came out to talk to us and the waitress took our picture for us and they gave us a complimentary dessert with a candle to make a wish for the future. Had a great dinner just what we wanted.

Four of us stopped by tonight after spending the afternoon at cedar point to head home to Connecticut and we were extremely surprised with the resturant. The chef came out to talk to us as we entered and recommended dishes for us. The beer and wine list were both extensive with great selections. The service was great and the food was phenomenal. We had steak, pork chop and ribs and shared between us and all of them were second to none. The chef then came out to talk to us when our meal was complete to ensure our meal was enjoyable. The only thing I wish is that we lived closer so we could visit again.

This place was awesome! Had the steak and it was to die for, also the spinach artichoke dip was the best I've ever had. Defiantly recommend this place.

My mom and I stopped there on out way back from Cedar Point on a recommendation. The menu on the internet looked pretty decent and I wanted a nice meal for my birthday. Note that I normally write very positive reviews about experiences. This was one of the worst! Ambiance- both the exterior and interior were dated. We drove up and were taken aback...it looks like a total dive from outside!! Inside was a bit better- it was clean but dark and not really decorated. Not to mention the music kept skipping. Service- the waitress was very nice. That's about all I can say. She was the only one working and there was only one other table through half of the meal. I saw a party of three come in, wait 10 min for her to reappear, then walk out. She took FAR too long for service and was regularly absent. We arrived at 5:30 and didn't leave until after 7:30. The food took FOREVER to come out despite being one of two tables in the restaurant. Food- pedestrian. The salads were boring and tasted bagged. The waitress bled on my plate and didn't realize it until I pointed it out. I get that it happens but I was very grossed out. My crab legs...oh where to start...they were overpriced for only getting three legs first of all. They were SO SALTY!! I could barely eat them without drinking water. The squash and zucchini were cut in random thickness so some were al dente and others were mushy. The rice was so bland and tasteless I didn't even eat it. It was absolutely unseasoned. AND it took the waitress 15 minutes just to box it all up! At that point there were three tables, including us. Moral of the story is DON'T GO THERE! I don't know how they even survive...the place is so overpriced for the food and service we were given. EDIT: I ate the leftovers the next day for lunch and ended up very very very sick...On my birthday...ya, definitely don't get the crab here...

This is by far the best restaurant in Sandusky. The food is excellent, not just for Sandusky, but for any major city. Just a hop over from Cedar Point; this would be a good stop for anyone that's looking for fresh, healthy options and an incredible selection of steak and seafood. Their Filet Mignon is the best I've ever had. I'm in town once or twice a year and always make a point to stop in. Jamie, the owner, is setting the bar for Sandusky fine dining.

Okay, so we were the ONLY people in the restaurant that night which is a little unsettling. Then there was an odd surprised look from the server when we walked in the door - as if 'what on earth are you doing here?'. That being said the food was very good. Did not disappoint. Very heavy on the meat side. Not sure what makes it a Mesquite grill. Anybody else care to guess. Felt like the dining room was caught somewhere in mid eighties. Ceiling fans everywhere and somewhat dated decor. But I'm sure if more people were there it would have felt more homey. Was not a bad choice for dinner.

My wife and I recently visited the kalahari resort for a conference and we ate dinner here after reading the reviews. Very quiet restaraunt, the food was fantastic, may be the best steak we have ever eaten.... Everything was excellent but it's not cheap so bring your visa :)

Hands down, the best steak I ever had in my life! My husband & I eat here a few times a year for special occasions and it has been nothing short of excellent, every single time. As a local, I feel very lucky to have such an amazing restaurant at my finger tips.

This is a high end restaurant with some expensive dishes but the food is worth the price and the quiet atmosphere is refreshing

Fantastic atmosphere, simple and soothing. The steaks are always tender and cooked to perfection. Seasoned wonderfully. Also love the shrimp scampi appetizer. Also heard crab cakes were delicious. Service is stellar, especially for Sandusky (usually poor service around here) Jamie the owner always comes out to check on you and ensure your dinner was good. Cool autograph from Dan Akroyd on the wall.

This was our second and last trip to the Red Gable. A very cute little place but if they are going to charge almost $30.00 for a strip steak especially in Sandusky it should be perfect. The steak was mostly fat and when Jamie, the owner, inquired about our meals we complained about the quality. He explained that ribeye steak is usually fatty and he doesn't trim it because some customers like to eat the fat. We pointed out that we had ordered a strip steak and he said next time just to tell the waitress that we want it trimmed. He made no effort to compensate us. The other meals at our table were the crab cakes, shrimp stuffed with crab, and pasta with shrimp. All were acceptable, salads were fresh and the bread is good. Unfortunately, for us though, the bad steak will keep us from returning.

Location: weird, poorly marked, located next to a deli/market that I'm fairly certain shares a kitchen with this restaurant. Service: upon walking into the place it was empty and no one was inside to seat us. I seriously thought we weren't supposed to be there or it was a closed off section. Maybe we went in the wrong door? Refer to my first item regarding the location. Service was sllllooooowwwww. Seriously, if you have plans to do anything later, clear your schedule because it'll take that long. We were there for over 2 hours. The waitress was inefficient, although nice, and couldn't handle the few tables that ended up with people who showed up for dinner. Food: overrated and pricey for what it is. I ordered a shrimp fettuccine and it was beyond buttery and greasy. I could see the pools of oil along the edge of the noodles. I felt ill from how heavy and greasy that plate was. Friends ordered steaks and some duck wings. I'm fairly certain the wings were chicken and it was dried and tough. The cook/chef apparently brought out the food and he was wearing a stained up shirt and weirdo moon-boots. I get you wear cozy clothes while working in a kitchen, but then don't be serving guests. It was weird and uncomfortable. Ambiance: old fashioned and cramped. I wasn't a fan. Overall, yes it's a unique location that isn't a chain, and I really wanted to like the place, but the service and food really wasn't quality. I wouldn't recommend.

John T I travel as a part of my job, I am always looking for special places to eat. It does not have to be fancy but has to have the promise a good food! The Red Gables Mesquite Grill is one of those places. It has the best Shrimp cocktail that I have ever had even better than the Gulf Coast. The steak was great, I cannot wait until I try the rack of lamb! In fact, I will try it tonight, since this will be the second time I am dinning here in a week

Once a year we meet with friends in Sandusky - about half way between our two homes - and are always looking for nice restaurants. This is a lovely little restaurant with wonderfully attentive wait staff and the chef/owner came around twice to our table to make sure that everything was OK. That said, the food was good but not great. I had a buffalo strip steak that was cooked very well but was full of gristle. Others at the table had better luck with their dinners. The menu is interesting but very over priced. We had a great time but I'm not sure we'll be back. I bet we can get meals just as good at a lower price.

My fiance and I went here for our first time for Valentine's day. Our waitress was Laura she made us feel like we were part of the family, my glass was never empty and on such a busy night she was not making us feel rushed or forgotten. We enjoyed the juiciest steaks that I have ever had. The food was excellent and I look forward to going back again soon.

After reading mixed reviews on several sites I wasn't sure what to expect, but the Groupon made it a good risk to take and I'm glad I did. If you're part of the Applebee's crowd and expect fast pace and a "hip" atmosphere, this isn't the place for you. It's laid back, relaxed, and intimate. The dining room isn't very big and can get busy at times but the staff is very friendly and as attentive as they can be when the place is packed. I loved that the chef/owner comes out to talk to the guests and see how everything is going for you. It did get a little loud as the dining room filled up but I expect that would vary with the particular crowd. I started off with a crab cake for an appetizer and it was fantastic. It had a little trouble holding it's shape because it was loaded with nice chunks of crab meat instead of being mostly filler. I don't like intense "fishy" flavor and this had none of that. Definitely high quality. I had heard this place has great filet mignon, and I considered it, but NY Strip Steak is my favorite so I went with that. Hard to find room for improvement! Seasoned well with a wonderful flavor and cooked exactly as I like it. My baked potato with butter and sour cream was very good though as a personal preference I would have liked shredded cheese and chives added on it as well. Dinner was finished off with a chunk of chocolate cake that nearly killed us! Very rich with a killer fudge frosting. All in all one of the best meals I've had in a while and we're definitely going back.

I come here every year for Christmas Eve dinner with my family. The food is good, the service is great, and the atmosphere is very cozy. Note: you do not need to dress up for this place--it's not a fancy fine dining place. The atmosphere is intimate, for sure, but it doesn't require a suit and a date. I usually go for a steak, but sometimes Jamie (chef/owner) cooks up something a little non-standard for the Sandusky area that I'll happily order. Jamie is always on the floor making sure everyone is happy, which is a plus. It's always been my experience that if something isn't right, then he makes it right.

Overpriced, campy decor and mediocre cuts of meat. I threw half of my steak out, much to the chagrin of the "chef" who dressed as if he fell out the window of a halfway house. The bread was great! The staff was attractive (minus aforementioned cook). My guest said it was quaint and oddly charming, but I felt like somebody put wood paneling accents in a well worn Winnebago. As I said, the cuts of meat were Kroger clearance, but it was actually cooked reasonably well.
