Was it dinner? Or dessert? It's like dinner with a bonus - you can't beat that! I ordered the chicken and cheese sopapilla. Sopapilla is a fried pastry sweetened with honey. They fill it with about 10 different options and serve them in four different sizes - small, regular, large and extra large. I wolfed down the large and was almost unable to walk out of the place. It's probably a good thing that I don't live close by. The menu also includes tacos, burritos, nachos and taco salads. They seem to do a good business - there are only about 8 tables in the place but most patrons during my visit were getting takeout. No credit cards accepted - cash only.

I no longer live in Newark, but regularly dream about this place. The Buenas (the family that started the Sopapilla business in Mt. Vernon and extended to Newark) really brought something special to this area. Whenever I bring friends home to Newark, this (or another branch) is a must - it's so original and unique to Newark, and also a pretty amazing meal. I always order "extra salad" on top and highly recommend it. I'm jealous of all you Nerk-ians who get to eat this all you want! Send some to me in LA!

The food was outstanding! I had the chicken and cheese sopapilla (large size) and it was almost too big for me. The food was high quality from what I could tell, and the place was clean and friendly. Definitely somewhere I would come back to again.

This little spot is a piece of heaven. It's unassuming, cheap, and the food is AMAZING. Whenever I have a week off to visit my hometown, I stop here for lunch 4 out of 5 days; that isn't a hyperbole. Items you should try: start at the top of the menu and work your way down. Really though, try the chicken and cheese sopapilla, beef and cheese, bean, beef and cheese. Those are my top 3. Another thing of note is that they make their salsa in house and is well worth trying in gratuitous amounts. If you have any more capacity to consume more, order a desert sopapilla and savor the blissful decadence. Like I mentioned before, the building is unassuming, the decor is minimal, and the restrooms are clean. There is a drive-up window that you can pick-up your to-go orders or make new ones. If you want a to-go order, I recommend that you call ahead. Also, they're closed on Sunday's and Monday's. PS. If you can coerce the recipe for the sopapilla's from one of the staff members, I'll pay you handsomely. So far all my attempts have been denied.

I loved that we found this place! We're from San Francisco and never find 'good' quick dining anywhere in Ohio! This place was a blessing, good home-cooked Mexican style food, reminiscent of the taquerias that we have back in California. Simply the best money I spent on food in the Newark area, and it's cheap. Very fresh food, high quality food, better than anything you'll get at the chain restaurants in the area. I totally agree with what the other two reviewers said, so no need for me to repeat. I think their sister restaurant which has more dining seats is La Paloma or something like that.

A hometown favorite, I've been eating Sopapilla since I can remember. A pastry stuffed with beef and cheese, topped with lettuce and tomato and a side of a bottle of house made salsa. This is one of the best foods Newark has to offer. You can trade the beef for chicken or add bean to these delicious stuffed taco salad type foods. The service is quick and it's just a small mom and pop place, but you won't regret visiting.

I finally tried this place after living in the Newark area for 15 years. I now realize those 15 years were sadly wasted. I could have been eating the excellent, affordable food at Sopapilla Express all along.

I like to order carry out at least once every two weeks. The salsa is a great addition to the cheesy nachos or a Sopapilla! I usually order a small chicken, bean, & cheese Sopapilla. It's warm and fulfilling -- especially when you're not in the mood to cook!

The aroma upon entering this small location is like candy in my nostrils. The smell of the bread used to make the sopapilla is amazing. Reminds me of the wonder bread factory smell in columbus. This was my first time here and I had the chicken sopapilla. It is pretty large and could possibly make into two meals for a single person. I couldn't even finish mine! It comes with salsa and I asked for extra cheese. Slice through the middle.from one end to the other and add salsa and drizzle cheese all over. It was awesome. Really hit the spot. I heard the seafood sopapilla is good there as well! They also have dessert sopapillas as well. The location is clean and well kept. There are about 4 or 5 tables. Reminds me of a super micro taco bell. It's a pretty popular place as the phone continued to ring off the hook for a Monday night at 8pm. Dine in wait isn't long at all but we called ahead and dashed home to eat. Very filling and scrumptious. I definitely recommend if you are in the Newark area!

This place is a hidden gem in Ohio. Nowhere else in the world can you get this exact recipe. My son worked here for several years until he went away to college. The sopapillas are uniqe, fresh & taste so good you have to try it to believe it! The salsa is legendary. Have tried the tacos & desserts as well. This location offers the convenience of drive thru service unlike the others. Highly recommend, you cannot go wrong no matter what you order.

I absolutely love this place! It's been a landmark in Newark for years. If you're wanting a good, fried sopapilla, this is the place to get it. My suggestion: the large beef, bean, and cheese sopapilla with a side of sour cream! If you're SUPER hungry, you may want to try the XL size. The ambiance is casual and kind've divey. There are a few booths and about 4 or 5 tables...so it's pretty small. It's good to eat in or carry out. I generally come here every few weeks or so when I'm in town. Good place, great food!

last nights customer service and food was horrible. The food was greasy...got the order wrong and we got the appetizer midway through the meal ...no aplology. Employees in back were standing nd chatting while customers were waiting to order and waiting for their orders...saw one lady wait at least 25 minutes. Very poor service. We wont be back.

Meh. Food was just okay. I got a beef, bean and cheese, but Im sorry, melted Colby cheese just doesnt pair well with ground beef. And putting this goop inside a pastry? Please. It was almost like having a Colby beef stroganoff Hamburger Helper stuffed pastry. Not very appetizing, and very bland. And what restaurant doesnt take credit cards now a days?? Are you kidding me? Sorry, not a fan, and we wont be going back.

Based upon the many stellar reviews posted here on Yelp, we were excited to give Sopapilla Express a try. We were actually hoping Sopapilla Express would be that awesome ethnic hole-in-the-wall with exquisite food. Just having moved to Newark, we're on the hunt for good food. We were very disappointed. We ordered a small nachos, small chicken and cheese, and small beef and cheese. If you're plain hungry and looking for something other than the loaded potato bites on Arby's value meal, then maybe this'll hit the spot. The nachos were nothing more than corn tortilla chips, smothered in cheddar cheese, and showered with little bits of jalapeno. This is easily replicated at home and not at all special. The savory sopapillas are okay. The dough is crispy yet soft and flaky. The fillings are very under seasoned. We reached for the salsa to help give some heat, but the salsa tasted like watered down pace picante. The beef and cheese tastes a little like hamburger helper cheeseburger filling. By far, the best part of the meal was the sweet sopapillas. The apple filling was actually really nice. it had big chunks of apple, and the glaze was not cloyingly sweet. The ice cream was nice and dense. It pretty much resembles an apple dumpling but with a softer, less sweet, crust. The plain w/ honey was pretty good if you're looking for plain carbs. All in all, we won't return unless a craving for the apple sopapilla hits. The service is adequate and perfunctory.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
